You do have to sign up and then you’ll be  directed to the main page  where you can choose videos or movies to watch. There is some overlap in shows available on Popcornflix, but this is much less of a niche channel than Popcornflix. 

Kanopy is a free streaming option that is only available for people with public library cards, which are also usually free and an amazing amenity for the local community. You’ll be impressed with the movies on here, as it includes some recognizable classics and cinema from all over the world.

Find out if your library is a part of the Kanopy program by doing quick search  to find out. The service was created to be an extension of a library card, only instead of checking out books, you’re checking out movies or documentaries. 

9. Viki 

Viki calls itself the “ Heart of Asian Entertainment ” and is the best source for Korean dramas (with still some notable selections from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan). You’ll find endless classics you can binge back-to-back and even dramas that are still airing in Asia. Trust us, there is no shortage of available content to keep you entertained.

Freevee is available  through the app stores , but you’ll need an Amazon login to get in. If you have Fire TV, you already have free access to this channel. These free movie and TV streaming services are particularly great for watching classic, indie or older movies and TV shows that aren't on the big streaming services, and also new indie films that may not even release in theaters. In other words, they're great for people who don't want to stick to the modern release schedule.

Prime Video's free sibling is Freevee , formerly IMDb TV, is the best free streaming service right now — its library is so large that you'd be forgiven for thinking that it's not actually free! Here at What to Watch we love the platform for its movies since there are barely any ads interrupting the story (compared to some rivals).

Freevee has loads of movies, including older classics, modern dramas and loads of gory horror and sci-fi. It's also great for factual entertainment and documentaries.

However, Freevee's strongest suit is in its TV, as it's chock-full of box sets for some of the biggest and most beloved TV shows of all time. The exact library depends on your region but expect binge-worthy comedies, nail-biting dramas and plenty of reality TV.

If movies are your thing, Plex is a fantastic streamer to check out — as long as you make sure to familiarize yourself with how it works.

You see, Plex is both a library and a directory. If you search for a movie in its library, you'll be able to find it, and if it's not on Plex, the service will let you know how you can watch it. This is useful, but it's easy to mistakenly think something's on Plex when it isn't.

One you've found your way to the free movies & TV part of the website, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised by the number of videos on the site, particularly movies. The Roku Channel is a bit different from the other free streaming services on this list, in a way that might call the 'free' part into question a little bit.

That's the fact that you need to own a Roku-enabled streaming device or TV in order to watch The Roku Channel, and not every TV will work with it (in the UK, Sky Q and Now TV also offer it). But if you do have access to TRC, it's one of the best free streaming services out there.

The Roku Channel has a big list of movies, TV shows and documentaries, including older ones and more modern additions. But the real draw is the Roku Originals, which include musical biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story , Die Hart 2 and Toast of Tinseltown . Roku is quickly gaining a name for itself with its originals, that can only be watched on The Roku Channel.

Classix does what it says on the tin: it's for classics.

In the Classix library you'll find plenty of classic movies, and we're talking about 'classics' from yesteryear, so expect plenty of black-and-white and much older pictures. It's great for people looking to catch up on their movie history.

There are a few stipulations though. Firstly, Classix isn't available on most devices, as it's only on Apple TV, iPhones or iPads, severely reducing the number of people who can access it.

Secondly, while Classix is completely free, there is a paid tier. This costs $7.99 or equivalent, and it's a one-off payment instead of a subscription. After this you get access to a much wider library of movies, and also some TV shows and live TV channels. Plus, you have to pay if you want to download to watch on the go.

So Classix isn't for everyone, hence its placement this low on our list, but if you tick all the boxes then Classix could be great.

7. Rakuten TV

Rakuten TV is one of the various entertainment offerings from Japanese tech giant Rakuten, and it's a decent alternative to Tubi in the UK.

The streaming service has plenty of movies, with lots of period, war and action films that you can watch for free, including a surprising number of Sly Stallone ones. It also offers select TV box sets, with a good few reality ones in particular.

There are a few live TV channels on Rakuten, mainly themed ones like 'Movies', 'Mystery TV' or 'Tennis Channel'. That's not as many as some of the rival services, but nothing to turn your nose up at.

You can actually use Rakuten TV to rent or buy movies as well, including ones straight out of the cinema, but if you make sure to find the 'Free' category you'll find a huge number of blockbuster movies that don't cost anything.

Where to Watch Free Movies Online: 12 Best Places

Whether you enjoy comedies, mysteries, documentaries or something else entirely, you can find a great selection of movies you can stream online for free. 

In this article, I’ll take a look at 12 of the best movie websites and resources for watching free movies online. I’ve visited each of the websites listed below, and I’ve tested a few videos from each to ensure quality, check for ads and see what’s available at no charge.

This article was updated in January 2024 and I review it every three months. Detailed notes on all updates can be found here .

Where To Watch Free Movies Online

When you start looking for free movies online, it won’t be long before you start coming across less-than-reputable websites. Some may require paid memberships or subscriptions while others provide access to pirated content. But there are several websites, apps and streaming services that you can use to watch movies and TV shows legally and completely free . Among them are Crackle, The Roku Channel, Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV), Tub i and Vudu.

If you’re looking for a full list of free ways to watch movies that you’d normall y have to pay for, you probably won’t find it on this list. Instead, I’ve compiled 12 completely legal ways to watch free movies online, most of which are ad-supported. Note that “Ad Pain” is rated from low to high based on the length and frequency of advertisements.

If you’re looking for an entirely ad-free experience, be sure to check out Kanopy or Hoopla , which are powered by educational institutions.

When you visit one of these websites or download the apps, you may have to create a free account to continue. But y ou shouldn’t have to download anything or enter any payment information to gain access to the free conten t . At most, you might have to disable your ad blocker if you’re watching online. 

Below, you’ll find detailed information on 12 different places where you can legally stream free movies and TV shows.

Kanopy partners with thousands of public libraries and universities to provide ad-free shows and movies. You can use your library card or school email address to access content on your TV, mobile phone, tablet or online. I entered my library card number and then used my name and email address to create a Kanopy account. 

Once you’re signed in, you can watch a certain number of videos per month . The number of available videos per month varies by library. In the top-right corner of the screen, you’ll see a number indicating how many “ tickets ” you have remaining for the month or how many programs you can watch. You can enjoy unlimited plays in the Kanopy Kids section.

In addition to free movies, Kanopy also provides access to free documentaries on culture, the arts, business, education, global studies, health and more. As I scrolled through the selection, I didn’t see many titles I recognized. Still, the vast selection of indie movies, documentaries and world cinema titles was enough to keep me browsing through several pages. 

Once you’ve found a film you’d like to watch, you can click on the title for additional information, related titles and comments (which can often include helpful recommendations). Most videos also include ratings, subtitles and transcripts.

Kanopy is available as a   mobile app on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire devices. You can also access the TV app via Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Samsung Smart TV, Roku, Telstra TV or Chromecast. If you don’t have access to any of these devices, you can also connect your computer to your television using an HDMI cable to watch Kanopy on your TV.

• There are no advertisements.
• You’ll find a wide variety of topics especially if you’re looking for documentaries or educational films.
• You are limited to watching a certain number of videos per month, which varies by library.
• Content is not downloadable.
• You’ll have to log in or create an account to stream.

Hoopla is the digital service of Midwest Tape , which is a leading provider of entertainment and media to public libraries across North America. You’ll find digital videos (movies and TV shows) as well as music, audiobooks, e-books and more from more than 8,500 libraries.

Hoopla works just like a public library, which means you can instantly borrow digital movies at any time using your library card. If you don’t already have an account, you can sign up for free online. You will need to log in to be able to “borrow” anything.

Once you’re logged in, you can see featured titles, anything you have currently borrowed, recommendations based on what you’ve previously borrowed, what’s popular and anything you’ve added to your favorites. You can also browse at the top of the screen or search for titles using the search bar. 

After you find a title you’re interested in, you can see the movie details and description as well as ratings from other Hoopla users. When you’re ready to check something out, just click “Borrow.” You’ll see a message letting you know how long you’ll have access to the title (typically 2-3 days) and whether it’s available for streaming, downloading or both. The title will be automatically “returned” when it’s due back.

Once you’ve borrowed a movie or show, you can watch it at any time without advertisements. Subtitles are also typically available. In addition to free movies and TV shows, Hoopla also provides access to free audiobooks, e-books, music and more . 

You can access Hoopla on any web browser or Apple/Android devices. You can also stream content via your Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast or Roku device.

• There are no ads during TV shows and movies.
• Some content is downloadable once checked out.
• You’ll find a wide variety of content on different media.
• You have to log in using your library card or create a free account to check out films.
• Short time limit on borrowing each title.

Owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Crackle is a streaming service that features original content as well free movies and TV shows acquired from other companies. 

You’ll find both old and new shows/movies in a wide variety of genres that feature hidden talent as well as famous names. As I scrolled through the featured categories, I recognized The Rock, John Travolta, Ashton Kutcher, Lou Diamond Phillips, Gene Wilder, Chevy Chase and more. There’s something for everyone at Crackle with plenty of featured categories including “Broken Vows,” “Deadtime,” “ Careless, ” “Hats Off to Christmas!” and “My Own Love Song.”

This free-to-use entertainment network is available on many popular platforms including web browsers, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, Roku, Android and Apple devices. For a full list of supported devices, visit the website . 

With Crackle, you don’t have to create an account to start streaming . But if you want to save any films to watch later, you will have to log in. Creating an account is easy and free; simply click “sign in” on the homepage to get started.

Whether you create a free account or start watching right away, you’ll still have to sit through a few advertisements. That means you will have to disable any ad blockers before streaming online . According to the website , running commercials with available programming allows Crackle to ensure that the service remains free.

Before a movie begins, you’ll see a couple of ads. After it starts, you’ll have periodic commercial breaks throughout the film. The video in the screenshot above is one hour and 40 minutes long, and you can see that there are eight advertisement breaks after it begins. During the ad breaks, I had the option to choose whether I wanted to interact with an ad for 30 seconds or watch regular ads for a normal break (around 2.5 minutes). 

On your screen below the film, you’ll see options to add it to a watch later list (if you’re logged in to a free account), share it on social media, see details about the film and check out similar recommended films. In addition to the details and description, you’ll also see “Why it Crackles,” which is a short blurb about what Crackle thinks makes the film great. 

• The site provides excellent variety and streaming quality.
• You can choose how long the ads are.
• You don’t have to create an account to stream.
• Some movies and shows are available for only a limited time due to agreements with programming providers.
• Content can’t be viewed offline.

Amazon Freevee (Formerly IMDb TV )

You’ll have to log in to access free Amazon Freevee content, but you can create an account for free. Alternatively, you can log in using your Amazon, Facebook, Google or Apple account to access the content. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to stream available movies and shows , add videos to a watchlist and save your place if you need to pause the video and resume watching at a different time or on a different device.

No matter how you choose to log in or which device you use, know that videos on Amazon Freevee can’t be purchased or downloaded to be watched offline. That means you will have to watch a few advertisements. In the video pictured below, you can see that there are six ads in this 90-minute movie. 

As you’re watching a show or movie, you have the option to enable the “X-Ray” feature. This shows small pop-ups in the corner of the screen with interesting facts relevant to the scene you’re watching. On the other side of the screen, you can choose to adjust closed captions, video quality, audio and screen size.

When I visited Amazon Freevee, I found several popular titles in the “Recently Added” section including “A Dog’s Purpose,” “Facing The Giants,” “Legacy Peak” and “The Nanny Diaries .” In addition to hit TV shows and top Hollywood releases, you’ll also find Freevee originals and a whole section of “Hidden Gems.” 

• You’ll find both popular titles and hidden gems.
• You can adjust the video quality (up to HD).
• You can see interesting facts throughout films with the “X-Ray” feature.
• The selection is limited.

On Pluto TV, you’ll find hundreds of free TV channels and thousands of free movies online. The internet television service offers free, ad-supported content that includes both live TV and on-demand titles .

You can access Pluto TV online using your computer, iOS or Android device. You can also stream Pluto TV on Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, PlayStation, Roku, Samsung and Vizio devices. I used my computer to visit the website online. 

When I first got to the website, I clicked “Watch Free Now” to get started. From there, I was able to choose from “Live TV” or “On Demand” at the top of the screen. “On Demand” features several categories including the genres listed above in addition to popular movies, top TV series, new movies and more. If you’re looking for live TV, you’ll find a huge selection of free channels.

You can browse live channels by category including featured, movies, news, reality, comedy, classic, sports, kids and more. You’ll see hundreds of popular television networks including TV Land, MTV, CSI and Comedy Central. 

With both the live channels and on-demand titles, you’ll see periodic advertisements in the same way that you would with traditional TV . In my experience, ads tended to pop up around every eight minutes. 

You won’t need to create an account to begin streaming content , but it’s free to sign up for one if you want. An account allows you to keep track of your favorite movies and channels as well as receive updates on new content. 

• You’ll find a wide variety of on-demand titles as well as live TV channels.
• You don’t need an account to stream.
• The ads are frequent.

The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel is another free ad-supported resource that provides access to streamable content including live TV and on-demand titles. 

You don’t have to have a Roku device to access The Roku Channel. It’s also available on a web browser as well as iOS, Android and Amazon Fire TV devices among others. 

I used the computer to access The Roku Channel’s website and watch free movies online. I was immediately prompted to sign in or create an account to access premium subscriptions, continue watching movies where I left off, and get personalized recommendations. Still, an account isn’t required to stream content . I did have to disable my ad blocker before watching anything though. 

In the movie above, you can see that there are six advertisement breaks throughout the film (1 hour, 37 minutes), which means you can expect an ad about every 16 minutes. For most movies, closed captions are also available. 

When I checked out The Roku Channel, I saw several popular on-demand titles including “Chad,” “The Great American Baking Show,” “Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story” and “Honest Renovations.” Live TV channels included NBC News Now, ion, Game Show Central, Crime 360 and Grit among others. 

• You don’t have to create an account to stream content.
• On-demand titles and live TV are available.
• There are relatively few ads compared to other free movie sites.
• Premium subscriptions require paid memberships.

Tubi is an ad-supported streaming service that’s owned by Fox Corporation . You’ll find thousands of movies and TV shows that you can stream legally and free via Tubi. 

To get started, visit the website online or download the app using one of the following types of devices: Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xfinity X1, Xbox, Samsung Smart TV, Sony Smart TV or PlayStation. For a full list of supported devices and how to stream Tubi, visit the website . 

In addition to on-demand movies, Tubi offers on-demand shows from TV channels including A&E, Fox, Lifetime and more. I found several popular reality shows including “The Bachelor” and “Dance Moms” as well as quite a few older films including “Ernest Goes to School,” “The Temptations” and more. 

When I checked out Tubi, I visited the website online. I didn’t have to create an account to begin streaming. Instead, I was able to choose a show and begin watching right away.

When you find a movie or show you’d like to watch, you can click play to immediately begin streaming. I didn’t run into any ads on the videos I watched, but you can expect them to pop up a few times throughout the movie or show. You will have to disable your ad blocker to begin streaming. 

Beneath the film you’re watching, you’ll see a short description, production details and suggestions for titles you may also like. 

• You don’t need an account to stream content.
• You’ll find ads only infrequently.

If you can access YouTube, you can access free videos. In addition to original content uploaded directly by users, you can also check out a wide variety of free movies available on YouTube. While YouTube TV requires a subscription, there are select titles that you can watch for free.  

To see the current selection of movies that are free to watch, visit this YouTube page . You’ll find several popular kids’ titles, documentaries and classic favorites. While you won’t have to create an account in order to browse or watch select free movies , you may have to sign in to verify your age if the title is rated R. 

Once you’ve chosen a movie to watch, simply click on it to begin streaming. The ads work just like they would on any other YouTube video, and the media player should also look pretty familiar. 

You can adjust the closed captioning, video quality and screen mode if you’re watching online. Below the movie, you’ll see a brief description including the production details and user comments. 

• Ads are short and infrequent.
• You’ll find a good selection of kid- and family-friendly movies.
• Not all movies are free to watch, even with ads.
• The free movie selection is somewhat limited.

Popcornflix

Popcornflix is a free ad-supported streaming service owned by Screen Media Ventures, which was bought by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment in 2017. You’ll find free movies, TV shows, web series and viral videos on Popcornflix.

The site mostly features independent films , which makes it a great place to look for hidden gems. Once you decide on a movie or show, you can begin streaming instantly after one or two previews. 

You won’t be required to create an account in order to stream media on Popcornflix , but you will have to pause or disable any ad blockers. The advertisements work more like an ad you would see while playing a game online, and you have the option to skip some ads after a brief preview. 

You can access Popcornflix using a web browser on your computer or with an Apple TV, iOS device, Android device, Roku device, Amazon device or Xbox.

• You can start streaming instantly with no account required.
• You can read other users’ comments about the movies.
• You won’t find many well-known titles.

Formerly owned by Walmart, Vudu is now a digital video store and streaming service owned by Fandango Media . You can rent and buy films from Vudu, but you’ll also find a selection of free movies and TV shows that you can stream with ads. 

There are 19 categories to choose from that feature free movies and shows including the genres listed above. You’ll also find categories such as star-studded favorites, most-watched movies and hidden gems.

To begin watching videos on Vudu, you’ll need to create a free account using your name and email address. Once you’re logged in, you can instantly stream any title labeled “free with ads.” 

When you select a movie or show you’re interested in, you’ll generally have to watch 2-3 advertisements before getting started. After that, you can expect advertisements to pop up periodically throughout the video . You can choose between SD and HDX video qualities, and most titles come with optional closed captions. 

Vudu is available on Roku, Android, Apple, PlayStation and Xbox devices as well as online via any web browser. 

• You’ll find a wide variety of free movies and TV shows.
• “My Vudu” tab lets you keep track of what you’ve watched/want to watch.
• You’ll need an account to begin streaming.
• Content is not downloadable
• Not all movies and TV shows are free.

Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll is a Funimation company that streams anime in more than 200 countries and territories. If you’re a fan of anime, this is the free streaming resource for you. You’ll find both popular titles and Crunchyroll originals available for free.

Scrolling through popular anime shows, I saw more than 1,300 episodes of “One Piece,” more than 170 episodes of “Black Clover” and more than 140 episodes of “My Hero Academia” when I checked out Crunchyroll. Other popular titles include “Attack on Titan,” “Naruto” and hundreds more . The majority of the content has Japanese voice acting with English subtitles, but there are a few shows that are dubbed in English .

While you don’t need to create an account in order to stream content via Crunchyroll, you will see advertisements prompting you to pay for a   premium membership . The membership lets you watch unlimited ad-free shows, get access to new episodes an hour after they premiere and download shows for offline viewing. Still, you can stream online for free (with ads). Just note that the newest episodes may not be available immediately.

When you choose a video, you’ll be able to start streaming it online instantly without having to log in. If you want to add the video to a queue to watch later, you’ll need to create a free account. I didn’t have to disable my ad blocker to begin streaming, and ads appeared only a couple of times in a 23-minute episode.

But it appears to be totally free through Amazon Freevee. Once I clicked the play symbol next to it, I was redirected to Amazon Freevee’s website to watch the movie for free. 

If you have a specific movie in mind, Yidio is a great resource to check and see if it’s available for free online.

There are a ton of streaming services to choose from nowadays. There’s arguably never been a better time to watch a good movie from the comfort of your home, with platforms like Netflix , Hulu , Max , Criterion Channel, and more offering a cornucopia of new releases and classic titles every month.

YouTube happens to be one of these. Despite not getting nearly the same amount of attention as those aforementioned services when it comes to movie libraries, YouTube actually has wealth of great movies that are available to (legally) stream for free.

We’ve combed through the platform’s library of available titles to bring you the very best free movies on YouTube. Let’s dive in and see what they have to offer!

The Dark Crystal

Directors: Jim Henson, Frank Oz Cast: Stephen Garlick, Lisa Maxwell, Billie Whitelaw

Jim Henson is known for puppeteering, but to be into film puppeteering at all, you’ve got to be pretty open to out-there filmmaking. It doesn’t get more “out there” than leaping from puppet-driven musical comedies to an original fantasy film where half the cast speaks a constructed language and there are no human characters at all. Yeah, the Skeksis language played so poorly in test screenings that the lines were redubbed in English, but you get the point.

The story of Jen the Gelfling’s quest to heal the Dark Crystal and prevent the cruel Skeksis from ruling the world forever was a product of Henson’s post-Muppet ambitions of proving that film puppetry could be a true medium, not merely a novelty. Is The Dark Crystal good? That’s a complicated answer. Is it the product of an incredibly skilled production, led by a once-in-a-generation creative talent, that could not be made today ? That’s certain. —SP

Director: Ridley Scott Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright

Alien ’s greatness probably doesn’t need to be restated. But even if you know how good it is, or think you’ve seen it plenty of times, you probably owe this Ridley Scott masterpiece a rewatch. It’s the kind of movie that miraculously builds on its own legacy with each subsequent viewing, and only grows in impressiveness with each passing year.

So rewatch Alien again. Compare every element of the movie against something sci-fi films (or any genre, for that matter) have done since, and marvel at how far ahead Alien comes out. In the nearly 45 years since that movie was released, no film has come close to matching how well it communicated the idea of being trapped in space with something more horrible than you knew could exist. No cast has ever had such perfect grizzled-trucker energy or crackly faces. It’s easy to look at movies from the 1970s and say they don’t make ’em today like they used to, and it’s true. But it’s also true that no one before or since has ever made ’em like Alien , and we should all probably appreciate that a little more often than we do. —Austen Goslin

Director: Ron Howard Cast: Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Warwick Davis

It may seem impossible now, but there was a time when Star Wars was new, and Hollywood was dying to do more stuff like it. Enter George Lucas and his buddy Ron Howard, who said: Let’s do Star Wars for medieval fantasy.

The result, Willow , is a loosely structured fantasy adventure comedy with cutting-edge special effects that’s fun for the whole family (give or take a couple of black magic scenes that absolutely seared into the brains of young viewers). Star Wars ’ Warwick Davis plays the titular hero — a hapless but hopeful basically-a-Hobbit — on a quest to save a baby from an witch, with the help of himbo swordsman Madmartigan, in maybe Val Kilmer’s most delightful role.

Willow is, frankly, phenomenally silly, but also phenomenally fun. There’s a magic wand and a fairy queen and a sorceress who’s been turned into a kind of Australian possum. Give it a watch. —SP

Director: Martin Scorsese Cast: Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano

Of all Martin Scorsese’s many terrific films, it’s hard not to feel that his 2016 adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s novel Silence is one of his most personal and important. The film follows two Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), on a mission to find another priest who is said to have renounced his faith in 17th-century Japan. At the time, Christians in the country were largely forced into hiding at the risk of torture and death, making the priests’ journey particularly difficult.

While the movie serves as a fascinating look at this period in Japan, it’s even more affecting as a crisis-of-faith movie for Rodrigues. Garfield’s performance is absolutely haunting, as we see Rodrigues slowly lose not just his faith in God, but in everything he’s ever stood for or known himself to be. Garfield communicates all of this pain mostly without dialogue, with a constant war of expressions on his face and in his eyes between his faith and his despair. All of this makes Silence feel like Scorsese’s greatest statement on faith yet — particularly impressive when you consider that he made it in his sixth decade as a filmmaker. —AG

Director: Michael Lehmann Cast: Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty

Michael Lehmann’s classic 1989 dark comedy about solving toxic high school dynamics via murder looks even more arch, mannered, and over the top now than it did back in its day, but it’s still a ridiculously fun movie, full of memorable one-liners, cinematography that pops off the screen, and familiar faces in their very young days. Christian Slater’s career-long Jack Nicholson impression has never been more pronounced than it is here. And after so many years of Stranger Things , it’s fascinating to revisit Winona Ryder from the era where her signature move was blasé teen angst instead of agonized mom angst. The dialogue has aged a bit, but the central conceits — that high school kinda sucked for most of us, and that people tend to be huge hypocrites about how they remember the dead — still land solidly, and with a lot of laughs. — Tasha Robinson

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

Directors: Kelly Asbury, Lorna Cook Cast: Matt Damon, James Cromwell, Daniel Studi

If you don’t care about this movie, I don’t care about you. It might be a niche take, but I love an animal movie that doesn’t make the animals talk with weird humanoid lips. Spirit is the story of a wild horse who’s taken into captivity by American settlers in the pre-1900s western U.S., and it’s responsible for about one-third of my personality .

Voiced by Matt Damon, Spirit is endlessly compassionate and filled with spunk. His journey to try to escape captivity and return to his horse wife is fraught with physical abuse that mirrors the way the settlers abuse the land out west, but Spirit never loses his drive. The film paints the settlers as evil and oppressive, and represents the Lakota man who takes him in as safe and respectful of his wildness — aka, it’s accurate.

This movie came out when I was 7 years old, and I remember sitting in the theater, quietly weeping for perhaps the first time in my life. I wasn’t having a meltdown or a temper tantrum. I was going through the very real range of emotions the movie evokes — fear when Spirit gets caught for the first time, rage when he’s branded, excitement when he learns to love riding, deep joy when he’s reunited with his horse baby mama, some blend of grief and anger at the realization that this situation happened to a lot of real-life horses.

Watch it with your kids or watch it alone, and just don’t think too hard about how cringey the original Hans Zimmer songs are. —Zoë Hannah

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Director: Michael Bay Cast: John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, Max Martini

Michael Bay’s Benghazi movie never really got a fair shake. Around its release, Republican politicians were still using the 2012 Benghazi attacks as a weapon against presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time of the attacks. Because of that, the movie got written off by many due to claims that it was nothing more than Republican propaganda. However, nearly a decade removed from that context, it’s much easier to fit the excellent 13 Hours into the larger arc of themes Bay has spent his entire career chasing: Institutions of power care more about rules and norms than they do about human lives, and to save lives, it’s up to individuals to break those rules.

Beyond the morals of the movie, however, 13 Hours is just absolutely terrific, thrilling filmmaking. Bay basically turns the movie into his own personal version of the John Carpenter classic Assault on Precinct 13 . What that means in practice is that Bay gives us about 40 minutes of discussion about the politics of Benghazi, the questionable U.S. presence in Libya as a destabilizing force for its government, and the indefensibility of the U.S. bases there. The other 100-ish minutes of the movie’s run time are then dedicated to some of the most expertly filmed firefights ever put on film, where tension comes through in waves and characterization is built beautifully in the brief quiet moments between gunshots. —AG

Do the Right Thing

Director: Spike Lee Cast: Danny Aiello, Spike Lee, Giancarlo Esposito

If you’re American, this movie is required viewing. Do the Right Thing , a Spike Lee joint, makes you feel everything it replicates on screen — the heat collecting on the concrete of a Brooklyn street, the tension between a Black man and his neighborhood racists, the joy of a summer block party with excellent music, the perpetual grief of police violence against Black Americans.

It’s no easy watch. The story centers on racial tensions between white police, Italian neighbors, and Black neighbors in 1980s Brooklyn, but the tone isn’t overly serious. Instead, Lee uses moments of humor and joy to underscore the multiple tragedies of the film, and the ending doesn’t tie things up nicely — in fact, it leaves you (or me, a white person) with a pit in your stomach that won’t go away until you start protesting in the streets. And that’s a good thing. After all, the film is (desperately, pleadingly) telling you to do the right thing.

But there’s a boatload of merit to this film as a film, in addition to its merit as a required text to understanding race relations in the U.S. Like every other Spike Lee movie, the cinematography is unmatched, with his signature high-contrast colors and wacky, wide-lens, canted-angle shots to really capture the vibe of the late ’80s. The acting from Lee himself, Giancarlo Esposito, and Rosie Perez stands out, and the music is legendary —particularly Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power,” which they wrote for the film. —ZH

Director: Ishirō Honda Cast: Akira Takarada, Momoko Kōchi, Akihiko Hirata

If you haven’t seen the original 1954 Godzilla , it can be a real surprise how philosophical and principled it is, and how little of it is devoted to a giant rubber-suit monster stomping on Tokyo. (Though there certainly is some of that!) Like so many franchise starters, the first Godzilla is much more complicated and nuanced than most of the followers that focused in on the kaiju fantasy action . It’s well worth watching Ishirō Honda’s classic about war, weapons, humanity, and the price of technological progress, just to see where this story started, realize how it’s mutated, and appreciate how different Japan’s version of Godzilla has always been from America’s version . — TR

Train to Busan

Director: Yeon Sang-ho Cast: Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok

Zombies. Trains. South Korean political commentary. What else do you need from a horror-action-thriller?

Unlike Snowpiercer , the other scary train movie out of South Korea, Train to Busan is a really fun watch. That isn’t to say it won’t hit you in the heart, though — the tale follows a frankly shitty father as he attempts to be less of a shitty father by bringing his daughter to see her mother in Busan on her birthday. Unfortunately for them both, a zombie attacks the train and thus begins a zombie apocalypse that plays out within the train cars.

It’s a master class in locked-room storytelling, with plenty of the funny and shocking elements that have become endemic to Korean film. Ultimately, you’ll watch the main character grow out of his tendency to disappoint his family. More importantly, you’ll watch him fight a bunch of well-CGI’d zombies. It’s a great first foray into Korean film if you’re new to it, and a classic deserving of endless rewatches if you’ve already seen it. —ZH

Director: Greta Gerwig Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts

In the wake of Greta Gerwig’s box-office buster Barbie , it’s an excellent time to revisit her earlier, more delicately planed, but just as emotionally engaged work — particularly Lady Bird , her coming-of-age movie starring Saoirse Ronan as a teenager trying to find her own identity amid her relationship with her mother. Reading a point-by-point plot summary makes Lady Bird sound mundane and scattershot, but the wistful, sometimes dryly hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking way Ronan plays the title character holds it all together. This one’s a slice of life that feels like real life — and like an arch, straight-faced comedy at the same time. — TR

Total Recall

Directors: Paul Verhoeven Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone

I will never forget the first time I watched Total Recall as a child. The sight of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s pained expression as he wrenched an oversized tracking device out of his nose canal fascinated me almost as much as the sight of his eyes popping out of his face on Mars haunted my sleepless childhood nights. Its macabre practical special effects aside, Total Recall remains an irrefutable banger of a sci-fi action flick that still holds up more than three decades since it was first released.

The reality-blurring romp about a salt-of-the-earth construction worker who may or may not be a Martian secret agent is packed to the brim with explosive action sequences, bizarre satirical world-building, and fantastic performances. If you haven’t seen Total Recall yet, don’t worry — you have. You just don’t remember it; you’re actually a Martian secret agent whose mind was erased because you got too close to the truth. This is all a simulation. I’m communicating to you from the real world. I’m just kidding... or am I? —Toussaint Egan

Directors: The Coen brothers Cast: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin

My father likes Westerns. A lot. To this day, I’ll often come down the stairs to find him watching some nondescript (to me), old-looking film with two dudes talking like they have something in their mouths and swinging pistols around their fingers. While he succeeded in getting me into horror before the age of 10, I can’t say the same for Westerns — until we found ourselves watching the original 1969 True Grit one evening.

The story stars a girl — something I’d never seen in any of the John Wayne movies my dad liked — and she was competent, brave, and on a mission to avenge her father’s death. What better movie to watch with your dad?

Well, the better movie to watch with my dad came out a few years later, when 2010’s True Grit was released. We watched it together as soon as we could, in theaters, and decided it deserved rave reviews. My opinion stands, having rewatched it several times over the last 15 years. The story is the same as the original, but this version has Jeff Bridges instead of John Wayne and a 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld instead of a 21-year-old Kim Darby. Between the more realistic age of the leading actor (the character of Mattie is 14) and the improved cinematography of the remake, the 2010 version of True Grit became one of my favorite movies, and a formative one at that. While the 1969 version is funnier and grittier, the drama of the newer remake is compelling and connected with me, a ’90s baby, in a way the 1969 version connected with my father, a ’60s baby. Both are well worth a watch, and both are free on YouTube. —ZH

With multiple schools going tuition free, there’s never been a better time to pursue a degree in the performing arts. Here are the top programs recommended by industry insiders and educators.

“Tuition-free” is becoming the new buzzword, as several of the world’s top drama schools plan to adopt that policy starting this fall, including the graduate programs at Juilliard and USC.

In addition to broadening access to more diverse candidates and wanting to stay competitive with recruitment, the push to go tuition-free at USC was spurred on by the writers and actors strikes. “Just knowing how volatile the industry is for these creatives, it’s extremely important that they not be saddled with tens of thousands of dollars of debt,” says Emily Roxworthy, dean of the USC School of Dramatic Arts.

THR consulted with members of the industry and educators to determine its ranking of the best schools for an acting degree, with factors including overall training, cost, alumni success and more. Tuition, when applicable, is listed on an annualized basis and does not include housing and other fees, unless otherwise indicated.

The David Geffen School of Drama, a top grad program, remains extremely popular among students since it went tuition-free in 2021, with many also receiving need-based living stipends of up to $20,000. With the increased influx of applications, and just 16 students accepted per year for the three-year program, the school became even more selective, says dean James Bundy. “There’s terrific talent coming into the pool,” he says. Ninety-three percent of students who are accepted enroll at the school, pointing to its demand, according to Bundy. Faculty include Ron Van Lieu — who got a shout-out from former student Da’Vine Joy Randolph when she accepted her Academy Award in March — and Christopher Bayes, a leader in clown work and commedia. In addition to training Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Brian Tyree Henry and more, the program was also home to Randolph’s Holdovers co-star Paul Giamatti, as well as Juliana Canfield and Tom Pecinka, both lauded this year for their roles in Stereophonic .

In the school’s strong undergraduate program, both acting and music theater students take the same core curriculum before moving into more specialized training, including classes on the business side of the profession, with the goal of preparing students for work in film, television, theater and more. Its illustrious alumni include Judith Light, Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer, and several who have seen success on Broadway in the past year, with acting Tony recognition for Leslie Odom Jr. ( Purlie Victorious ) and Sarah Pidgeon and Will Brill (both in Stereophonic ). Tuition for the undergraduate program is just under $65,000.

5. Royal Academy of Dramatic Art

While it’s the oldest drama school in the British Isles, founded in 1861, LAMDA has continued innovating. It hired Philippa Strandberg-Long, a leading teacher of the Meisner Technique, as its director of actor training and drama school, and is offering virtual production technology acting and technical training to students in new, fully equipped studios. On the school’s long list of storied alumni are Brian Cox, David Oyelowo and Benedict Cumberbatch, who leads the school’s board of trustees, with recent alum Amber Grappy, who graduated in 2022, appearing on the Netflix series One Day . Tuition for international students in the three-year undergraduate acting program is just under $30,000, with the cost of the two-year grad acting program close to $31,000.

Guildhall has educated actors including Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor, Michaela Coel and Lily James in its three-year undergraduate conservatory acting program, which accepts 28 students a year. The school places an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration with students in the music and production arts programs, with support to create their own performance projects, and will introduce a B.A. degree in performance design starting in September 2025. The school recently saw the departure of Patsy Rodenburg, a longtime faculty member specializing in text, poetry and voice, and its new hires include noted opera singer Sarah Tynan as head of vocal arts. Tuition for international students is about $31,000.

Led by actor, director and choreographer Jesse Perez, the two-year MFA program has a focus on Shakespeare and a partnership with the professional Old Globe Theatre. Seven students a year are accepted to the program, which is tuition-free and includes a monthly stipend. Perez continues to work to broaden the school’s traditional classical training with a focus on diversity and courses on Suzuki training, clowning, physical comedy and more. “It’s my sixth year as the director of the program, and I’m finally starting to see the changes stick,” Perez says. Nathan Crocker, who previously worked at Rutgers University and NYU, was recently hired as the new head of voice and speech and will start in fall 2024.

Los Angeles

New hires within UCLA’s Department of Theater include Michelle Liu Carriger as theater chair and Judith Moreland ( Bosch ) as head of acting. The school’s graduate acting program was on pause last year and will be paused for the upcoming academic year (though graduate directing, playwriting and design programs are ongoing), as faculty continues to review and update the curriculum. The BFA program remains in operation, with recent alumni including Fernando Carsa ( Acapulco ) and Ava Lalezarzadeh ( Before ). In-state costs, which include housing and food, are $42,127 for undergrads living on campus and a bit more than $76,000 for out-of-state residents.

12. University of Southern California

USC’s School of Dramatic Arts has a new home base, with the recently opened Dramatic Arts Building, and big news: Its MFA program will be tuition-free starting in the fall. The school, which also offers a BFA program, benefits from both proximity and a connection to Hollywood, with the majority of faculty continuing to work in the industry, including Alexandra Billings ( Transparent ), Bayo Akinfemi ( Bob Hearts Abishola ) and Finola Hughes ( Blossom ), and many celebrity guest speakers, with Broadway actor MaryAnn Hu newly hired as director of the school’s musical theater program. Tuition for the undergraduate program is $69,904.

13. National Institute of Dramatic Art

Kensington, Australia

The drama conservatory has produced such stellar alumni as Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann and Sarah Snook. The three-year undergraduate drama conservatory has been led by John Bashford, former associate principal at LAMDA, since 2016. The school recently hired alum Travis Cardona as head of First Nations (referring to Indigenous Australians), and has worked with him to implement First Nations story­telling and practices within the curriculum. The annual tuition for the BFA is about $23,000 for international students.

14. University of Michigan

Ann Arbor, Michigan

15. Brown/Trinity Rep

Providence, Rhode Island

Long seen by the industry as one of the premier drama schools, the Ivy League program typically accepts 12 students a year into its tuition-free drama grad program, which is affiliated with the professional Trinity Repertory Company theater. The program is now on pause, with neither the MFA acting nor the directing program accepting a 2024-25 class. (The program currently has second- and third-year classes.) Faculty are considering possibilities for the future, as well as pathways for revising the programs in “bold ways” that speak to the changing theater landscape and the arts infrastructure at Brown. “At this point, we are continuing to explore the possibilities for the future of the programs, and any decisions will come as the result of this robust, ongoing process,” says Curt Columbus, Brown/ Trinity Rep’s artistic director.

16. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The school, which also features an 11-acre backlot in Savannah, now offers a BFA degree in Atlanta, under the guidance of film and television veteran Craig Anton. Tuition for the upcoming academic year is $41,130.

The conservatory musical theater program, led by Victoria Bussert, has seen most of its graduating seniors across the past 10 years sign with top representation after participating in the school’s New York showcase. Alumni include Colton Ryan, who received a Tony nomination for leading New York, New York on Broadway last year, in addition to many others who are now on Broadway or on tour. Tuition is around $40,000.

With alumni including Kathryn Hahn, Greta Lee, Stephen Colbert, Broadway actor Brian d’Arcy James and director Michael Greif, the school offers a music theater certificate program, helmed by Broadway star KO, as well as a theater major. The two-year MFA program is housed mainly in a new theater space in nearby Chicago, which also welcomes visiting artists. Tuition for the upcoming academic year is $64,887.

The school counts Aaron Sorkin and Vanessa Williams among the alumni of its program, which offers conservatory-style training within a major university and a partnership with the regional theater Syracuse Stage. The program also offers further connections with the possibility of an immersive semester in New York City, and has been expanding its offerings in acting for the camera and new media. Tuition for the upcoming year is just over $61,000.

Stanley Tucci and Edie Falco graduated from this New York state school’s strong BFA program, which continues to train a number of successful graduates, including Abbott Elementary ‘s Chris Perfetti, The Summer I Turned Pretty ‘s Sean Kaufman and Succession ‘s Zoë Winters. Susan Shopmaker, a lecturer in acting and BAFTA award winner for casting The Holdovers , is one of the newer hires at the school, which offers conservatory-style training in close proximity to New York City. Tuition for out-of-state students last year was about $17,000, while in-state residents paid just above $7,000. (Those with family income under $125,000 can qualify for free tuition.)

‘Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1’ Review: The Beauty, and the Bloodshed

In the first of a projected four-film cycle, Kevin Costner revisits the western genre and U.S. history in a big, busy drama.

Midway through Kevin Costner’s big, busy, decentered western “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” the actor Danny Huston delivers a brief speech. The year is 1863 — two years into the Civil War — and his character, a colonel in charge of a military fort in the southwest, is discoursing on a nearby settlement called Horizon. Apaches have recently burned the hamlet to the ground, killing scores of settlers. You simply need look at the land, the colonel says, to see why the newcomers will keep coming.

“You may recall that’s what drove us across the ocean to this country in the first place.”

Huston, an imposing presence with a rich, sepulchral voice that can suggest depths, delivers this nod at Manifest Destiny with arid sobriety. His words certainly sound meaningful yet this reference to American expansionism just hangs in the air, untethered from history or ideology. Given this nod as well as the film’s large scale, crowded cast, multiple story lines and nearly three-hour run time, it’s reasonable to assume that Costner will add context, commentary or, really, anything . Yet all that’s clear from “Chapter 1,” the lead-in for his splashily publicized four-film cycle , is that the land was vast and beautiful, and everyone wanted a piece.

“Chapter 1” is the first movie that Costner has directed since his 2003 western “Open Range,” an earnest period drama about free-grazing cattlemen facing down a wealthy rancher. What’s striking about that film, beyond how Costner draws from so many different genre touchstones — John Ford, Clint Eastwood and Sam Peckinpah, among others — is how he tries to honor old-fashioned westerns that he so clearly loves while also complicating the myth of the American West through his character, a violence-haunted gunfighter.

A version of that same man — tough, terse, good with a gun, not bad with the little ladies and now named Hayes Ellison — rides into “Chapter 1” about an hour in, handsomely framed against a bright blue sky. What takes him so long? Given how the movie plays like an extended prologue, I suspect that Costner timed his entrance for a four-part project rather than for a stand-alone film. That makes it tough to get a handle on precisely what he’s up to here, other than gesturing at history, re-engaging with an archetypically American genre and readying the foundation for an epic that will continue when “Chapter 2” opens in August.

Written by Costner and Jon Baird, “Chapter 1” features uneven lines of action that jump across the map, from the southwest to the Territory of Wyoming. In one section, bad men with good cheekbones, their dusters trimmed with animals skins à la Gladiatorial Rome, chase after a righteously violent woman (Jena Malone in a lively, credible turn). In time, they end up in one of those frontier towns with muddy streets and desperate characters, a sinkhole where Hayes rides in with some gold and exits with Marigold (Abbey Lee), a lady of the evening (and afternoon). In another section, Luke Wilson leads a wagon train peopled with tough Americans, Laplander goons and two British twits itching for some punishment.

The story line that revs up the action centers on the settlement, a riverfront hamlet on a ribbon of green that winds through the desert and has attracted the attention of a tribe of White Mountain Apache led by Tuayeseh (Gregory Cruz). Soon after the movie opens, the settlers are swinging their partners to fiddles like good John Ford folk; not long after, many are dead, cut down by Apaches. Among the survivors are the newly widowed, impeccably manicured Frances Kittredge (Sienna Miller) and her daughter, Elizabeth (Georgia MacPhail), who take refuge in the fort. There, they meet a first lieutenant, Trent Gephart (Sam Worthington), a thoughtful soul who refers to Native Americans as Indigenous.
