When was the last time you created or updated your resume using Microsoft Word ? If it's been a while, then you might be missing out on a helpful feature to improve your resume.

The LinkedIn Resume Assistant is a handy tool that assists you with that all-important, job-catching document.

What Is the LinkedIn Resume Assistant?

The LinkedIn Resume Assistant provides you with example resume snippets from other people in your field. This lets you see how they describe and explain their work experience and job skills.

If you struggle with the correct resume wording or how to best highlight your skills , it can be useful to see how other professionals do it. As LinkedIn explains :

"Resume Assistant in Microsoft Word helps get your creative juices flowing by showing personalized insights from LinkedIn, based on the desired role you're interested in."

In addition to seeing experience and skill samples, you can check out helpful articles, tops skills for your position, and suggested jobs in your area.

Resume Assistant Availability

It's important to note that Resume Assistant is only available in Word 2016 for Windows. And it will roll out slowly over time with Office Insider participants first and Office 365 subscribers next. If you believe that you should have it by now and do not, check to be sure you have the latest version of Word .

The Resume Assistant button should appear on your ribbon in the Review tab.

If you do see the button, but it's dimmed and cannot be clicked, make sure to enable your LinkedIn integration. Click File > Options and the General tab. Under LinkedIn Features , select the check box for Show LinkedIn features in my Office applications and click OK .

Getting Started With the Resume Assistant

There are two ways to begin using the Resume Assistant. The first is obviously to click the button in your ribbon. The second is to open a current resume or resume template from within Word. The tool will automatically detect that you have opened a resume. Then, a sidebar for the tool will open for you to get started.

You can then click the Learn more link at the bottom which will take you to Microsoft Office support site. There, you can check out a brief video of the Resume Assistant. Or you can just click the Get started button in the sidebar to begin.

Get started with the LinkedIn Resume Assistant

Next, you just enter a role (job title) and optionally an industry to view the examples. As you begin to type a role or industry, you will see suggestions pop up for you to pick from. After you make your selections, click See examples .

Viewing Your Resume Assistant Results

Now that you see your list of samples, you have a few options. If you did not include an industry initially, you can still enter one at the top of the results screen. By including a field such as healthcare, information technology , or automotive, you can view examples more closely related to your particular role.

You can also filter the results by top skills. For instance, if you enter "writer" as the role, you can filter by copyrighting, blogging, or editing. Or if you enter "restaurant manager," you can filter by assistant, general, or bar manager.

Some filters offer subcategories to narrow your results even further. For example, if you enter "programmer" for the role, you can filter by software, system, or web programmer. Then, if you pick one of those options, such as web programming, you can filter further with choices like PHP, HTML, or JavaScript.

Use filters in the LinkedIn Resume Assistant

When looking through the examples you receive, whether you narrow your results or not, you can see the job title and years in the position. Just select one to see the description in full using the Read more link which simply expands the section.

You cannot copy-and-paste or insert text from the samples. So, do not misunderstand this tool as a quick way to use another person's resume pieces to create your own.

The intent of the LinkedIn Resume Assistant is to help you be more creative and succinct with your wording as well as know the skills you should highlight on your own resume .

Additional LinkedIn Resources

In the sidebar, below your resume example results, you will notice a few additional helpful items. First, you can review the top skills for the role you enter. These are suggested skills that you should include on your resume if applicable.

Next, you can read LinkedIn articles related to resume writing . So, if you would like some extra tips on perfecting your resume, you might want to check these out. Clicking on one of the articles will take you directly to it on the LinkedIn website.

After that, you can view suggested jobs based on your role, industry, and location. You will see a snapshot with the position, company, location, and a brief job description. Just like the articles, selecting one of these positions will take you right to it on the LinkedIn site.

LinkedIn Resume Assistant Examples

The examples that you see with the Resume Assistant come from LinkedIn profiles that are public . You will not see any names or personally identifiable details. Plus, you will only see the description sections and no other information or areas from the person's profile.

It's important to note that if you have a public profile on LinkedIn, your skill descriptions may also be used by the Resume Assistant. If you would like to disable this option head to the LinkedIn website and log in.

Click Me > Settings & Privacy > Privacy . Scroll down to the Security section and under Microsoft Word , move the slider from Yes to No . Your change will be saved automatically.

Nearly 70 percent of people say they have difficulty portraying their work experience effectively, and 50 percent struggle to tailor their resume to a specific job opportunity. Furthermore, job applications on LinkedIn have increased 40 percent year-over-year, signaling increased competition for jobs.

How to improve your resume with Microsoft Word’s Resume Assistant

You’re trying to fine-tune your resume, and you want help. Using LinkedIn and Microsoft Word via Office 365, you can tap into an option called Resume Assistant. With Word’s Resume Assistant feature, you enter a keyword or term to describe your occupation and see sample resumes. You can also view the top skills for your profession, access LinkedIn articles with resume tips, and see a list of job openings to find out what employers are seeking from people in your occupation.

Microsoft started rolling out the LinkedIn-driven Resume Assistant in early 2018, following its acquisition of the professional networking site in 2016. To access the assistant, you’ll need a LinkedIn account and an Office 365 subscription.

Launch Microsoft Word on your computer, and open your resume. Click the Review tab, and then click the icon for Resume Assistant. The Resume Assistant opens in the right pane. In the field for Role, type your occupation, and select the matching term from LinkedIn’s list ( Figure A ). If you wish, you can add the name of an industry in the Industry field.

In response, the Resume Assistant displays snippets of LinkedIn profiles that match up with your role and industry. Review the different profiles; to see more of a specific profile, click the Read more link. To find more profiles, scroll down, and click the link to See More Examples. The goal is to see how other people in your profession are describing their skills and accomplishments so you can better describe your own ( Figure B ).

The next section on the Resume Assistant screen displays the top skills for your occupation. See which ones you possess, and determine if you want to include those in your resume. The Resume Assistant offers links to articles designed to help you write your resume. To read an article, click its link ( Figure C ).

The next section reads Additional Language Refinements For Resumes, To Make Your Writing More Precise And Professional. If you turn on the switch for this option and click the icon for Check Document on the Review Ribbon, Word will check your resume for clarity, conciseness, vocabulary, and other attributes ( Figure D ).

The Assistant serves up different job opportunities that match your profession. You can view the job postings if you’re looking for work. If not, you should still read the postings to discover what skills, background, and experience employers are seeking for someone in your occupation. Click the link to View Job On LinkedIn to see the full posting ( Figure E ). To see other jobs, click the link to See More Jobs On LinkedIn.

If you are actively looking for a job or work opportunity, click the link at the bottom to Get Started On LinkedIn. This takes you to a LinkedIn page where you can modify your profile to tell recruiters that you’re open to opportunities ( Figure F ).

How to use Microsoft Word’s Resume Assistant to look for a new job… on LinkedIn

While polishing your resume is still as much about relevant experience and skills as ever, finding a job now involves targeting the right keywords and SEO, too. That’s how Microsoft Word’s Resume Assistant can help: tapping LinkedIn to assist your work experience.

Resume Assistant is now part of Microsoft Word, assuming you have an Office 365 subscription and subscribe to LinkedIn. It’s part of Microsoft’s combination of apps and services, and a key part of justifying Microsoft’s $26 billion purchase of the business networking service.

It’s important to note that Resume Assistant doesn’t actually alter or correct your resume; it merely suggests ways to improve it. Resume Assistant can tap into other LinkedIn profiles and mine them for what made them successful.

Be aware that there’s far more assistance further down the Resume Assistant column. Scroll down to see suggested skills, helpful articles to assist your resume writing, and a list of open jobs near you in that specific field. Finally, there’s a link to LinkedIn to submit your resume, and let the world know that you’re looking for a job.

If that seems like a lot of LinkedIn references to a feature within Word—well, you’re right. It’s probably fair to say that Word’s Resume Assistant (“powered by LinkedIn”) is geared more toward uploading your profile to LinkedIn than to helping you ship your resume around the web…and away from Microsoft’s services.

How to get started with Resume Assistant

Though you can manually turn on Resume Assistant within Word, the easiest way is to launch Word, then select an existing resume template. Resume Assistant should launch in a sidebar to the right. If you have an existing resume, you can also open it within Word. If Resume Assistant doesn’t open automatically, you may launch it manually via the Tell me what you want to do search box, where you can type in Resume Assistant . Also, make sure you’ve enabled LinkedIn integration via  File > Options > General > Show LinkedIn features in my Office applications ).

Resume Assistant is the big, blue sidebar—you can’t miss it.

When you’re ready to move on, click the Get Started  button in the blue Resume Assistant pane to the right. It’s here that LinkedIn will begin suggesting ways to frame your work experience.

LinkedIn will autofill your most recent position as a way to start hunting down relevant information, but you can select whatever title and industry you’d like. (If you  don’t identify one on the list, though, LinkedIn won’t be able to suggest any examples.) Click the Read More link for the full listing.

Resume Assistant provides real-world job experience descriptions from people with similar positions, as a guide to assist you with your own language.

What Resume Assistant first does for you is anonymously suggest language to help you write your own resume, specifically work experience. For example, in this snippet, the employee responsible for leading the ThinkPad X-series delivery team lists their accomplishments. The idea isn’t for you to copy them, but to think about using similar language in describing your own skills.

Directly below the work experience examples are a suggested list of relevant skills. This is all about SEO: Not only are you telling a prospective employer that you can perform as expected, but these are also the search terms that prospective employers may be using. From there, Resume Assistant and LinkedIn jump into the good stuff: available jobs, and how to apply for them.

Resume Assistant will tap LinkedIn for a list of jobs close by.

Based on your stated position and location, Resume Assistant will tap LinkedIn to suggest nearby jobs that may be a good fit. You can then click on the job position to open a LinkedIn page, where you can do everything that LinkedIn allows you to do: read more information about the position, and even apply—where you’ll share your information that you’ve already stored within LinkedIn.

Finally, at the very bottom of the Resume Assistant column, you can also click into LinkedIn, to a separate page that signals your interest to allow recruiters to contact you.

…where you can apply and share your “profile”—which is essentially your resume.

At this point, you may wonder: What good is my resume, exactly? You know, the whole reason I began the process? That’s an excellent question. In fact, Resume Assistant doesn’t really facilitate the formatting or uploading of a resume anywhere in the process that I could see.

Instead, you’re tacitly encouraged to take your newfound knowledge and apply it to your LinkedIn profile—what you might call a traditional resume in LinkedIn’s lingo. “Applying” for a position within LinkedIn simply signals the prospective employer that you’d like to be considered as a candidate, and makes your profile available to the recruiter. 

Sure, you may submit a resume at some point in the process, and perhaps to an employer who doesn’t use LinkedIn’s network. But the implicit suggestion is: Why would you want to work  there ?

It's common knowledge that LinkedIn is the top professional social media site used. Unlike other older social media sites that have declined in popularity over the years, LinkedIn has maintained its popularity and has been actively used since its launch in 2003. With more than 1 billion users worldwide and 67 million companies on the site, it's a go-to resource to network, recruit, find and apply for jobs, promote your expertise, and more. 

So, if you're not on LinkedIn, create an account as soon as possible. For those of you who are on LinkedIn, you might be wondering if you should include LinkedIn on your resume. Great question!

Should you put LinkedIn on a resume? 

It's true that your resume is the first impression employers have of you when you apply for a job. With that said, count on LinkedIn being impression number two, given that more than 78% of recruiters use LinkedIn to find and research candidates. Some research even indicates 40% of employers won't consider you if you don't have a LinkedIn profile. In other words, as soon as your resume grabs the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager, it's likely that they're going to quickly do an online search to learn more about you, starting with LinkedIn. 

So, if you've been wondering if recruiters and hiring managers really do check LinkedIn, now you know that they do. As a result, you should definitely include your LinkedIn URL on your resume. But, before you take that step, you must ensure that your profile is current and professional. 

How to update your LinkedIn profile before sharing your URL

Even if you choose not to include your LinkedIn URL on your resume, based on the stats above, it's still probable that hiring teams will look for it anyway. So, first things first, you need to ensure your LinkedIn profile has all the necessary elements and is professionally written. The last thing you want is for a hiring manager to find your profile halfway complete - that scenario is likely to put your resume in the thanks-but-no-thanks pile. 

While it's true that your LinkedIn profile and resume need to align with each other, the great thing about your LinkedIn profile is that it gives you the chance to share more about yourself than your resume can highlight - another reason to be sure to include LinkedIn on your resume. Your LinkedIn profile provides you with a unique opportunity to showcase your personality and all of your professional history - it's a way to highlight your personal and professional brand. 

To ensure your profile is up to par and does what it's meant to do (land an interview and help you to get hired), you want to customize it as follows:

Include a professional photo and cover image

Craft a catchy headline

Add a standout summary in the “About” section

Add your work history in detail

Include all of your skills

Seek endorsements

Include your education , training, licenses, and certifications

Request recommendations

Add work samples, if possible

Complete all relevant sections

If you don't currently have a LinkedIn profile, use caution when rushing to create one. Yes, you want to have a profile up and running as soon as possible - especially if you're in the market for a new job - but don't create it in haste. Instead, when you're ready, give it some thoughtful consideration and take the time required to ensure it's a profile you're proud to share with employers. 

Another essential step to take before adding your LinkedIn URL to your resume is personalizing it. Yes, you could use the LinkedIn-generated URL that includes your full name followed by a string of seemingly random numbers and text at the end, but doing so looks unprofessional. In the examples below, if you compare how a LinkedIn-generated URL looks with how a customized URL looks, which is better?

Not only does the customized URL look more professional, it's also easier to recall. Plus, not customizing your URL can make you come across as being lazy or not caring enough about your job application.

Now that you're clear it's essential to customize your LinkedIn URL, here are the steps to do so:

Log into your LinkedIn profile

On the upper middle to right side of the LinkedIn navigation, click on the “Me” icon

From the menu that appears, click on “View Profile”

Select “Edit public profile & URL” from the top right corner, which will take you to your public profile settings

Click on the pencil icon below and to the right of “Edit your custom URL”

Customize the last part of the URL where you can enter information and click “Save”

Ways to customize and personalize your LinkedIn URL

LinkedIn allows you to customize your URL with 3 to 100 numbers or letters. When choosing what to use for the customized aspect, first remove any random string of text or numbers following your name. If your name alone isn't available, the next best option is to use a variation of your name that is still recognizable and professional. You can also include your job title or profession for URL customization.

Here are some examples of how to personalize your URL:

Add an available and easy to remember number at the end: linkedin.com/in/jamesjones25

Use your title or area of expertise: linkedin.com/in/jamesjoneshrgeneralist

Include your credentials: linkedin.com/in/jamesjonesCPA  

Add a phrase that relates to your personal brand: linkedin.com/in/jamesjonesmortgageloanexpert

Add your middle initial: linkedin.com/in/jameszjones

Where to include a LinkedIn URL on your resume

You're likely not surprised to learn that your LinkedIn URL should go at the top of your resume with your contact information . It's typically the last piece of contact information you'll include, following your phone number and email address.

When sending your resume by email, it's also wise to include your hyperlinked LinkedIn URL in your email signature. This offers easy access to your LinkedIn profile before the recruiter or hiring manager even looks at your resume. It's a good idea to include your LinkedIn URL in the contact information section of your cover letter , too.

How to put your LinkedIn URL on your resume

When listing your LinkedIn URL:

You don't need to include the "https://www." at the beginning. Only listing the rest of the URL is sufficient - for example, linkedin.com/in/karenjohnson22

You don't need to include a LinkedIn label for the URL - the employer will know what the URL is referencing since all LinkedIn URLs begin with "linkedin.com/in/" 

Hyperlink the URL in electronic versions of your resume

On the rare occasion that you might mail a hard copy of your resume, be sure the URL is easily legible and remove the hyperlink

How to put LinkedIn on a resume: example

When you've added your LinkedIn URL to your resume, it could look like this:

When not to include a LinkedIn URL on your resume

It's clear that putting LinkedIn on your resume adds value in most instances. However, there are a few scenarios where you shouldn't include LinkedIn on your resume. 

Don't include your LinkedIn URL if:

You haven't customized your LinkedIn URL. As mentioned earlier, not customizing your URL might make you appear lazy to recruiters and hiring managers. Since the LinkedIn-generated URL also tends to be long and odd-looking, it could be distracting to human readers vs. adding value the way you want it to.

Your profile is out-of-date and incomplete. Again, it's imperative that your LinkedIn profile is current and complete if you're in the job market and share your URL on your resume.

You don't feel good about your profile. Even if your LinkedIn profile is current, if you don't feel good about it or don't feel it represents you in the best light possible, don't include the URL on your resume. Instead, wait until you've made the updates and changes that make you want to share it. With that said, since employers tend to look you up even if you don't include your URL, try to make those changes with thoughtful consideration sooner rather than later - especially if you're currently applying for jobs. You also have the option of switching your profile to private until you're ready to make it public.  You can always seek professional support to help you update your profile if you're struggling to do so yourself. 

Your LinkedIn profile merely mirrors your resume. A benefit of including your LinkedIn URL on your resume is that it gives hiring teams insight into additional skills and experiences you have, as well as who you are as a person. If your LinkedIn profile and resume are virtually the same, then hiring teams might wonder why you included the URL at all. 

How to add LinkedIn Learning to your resume

If you have a LinkedIn learning certificate, it can be a valuable addition to enhance your job marketing materials. Here are some ways to include LinkedIn Learning on your resume:

Include it in your Certifications section. The most obvious place to include a LinkedIn Learning certificate is in your list of certifications, if you include such a section on your resume. 

Share it in your Education section . Suppose LinkedIn Learning is your only certification or additional training beyond your education. In that case, you can choose to list it with your education. For this scenario, some good naming conventions for the section are “Education & Certifications” or “Education & Credentials.”   

Reference it in your resume summary. You might mention your LinkedIn Learning certificate in your resume summary , if it helps to fill in any skills gaps you have or if you lack relevant work experience for the position.

Add it to your skills or competencies list. If you don't need to emphasize your LinkedIn Learning training in your summary, or are forgoing a Certifications section on your resume, then you can opt to list it in your skills or competencies list.

There’s never a bad time to apply for a new job, but updating your resume can begin to feel like a big task (especially if you’re already overworked). If you’ve got a LinkedIn profile though, you can use what you’ve already written to build and customize a strategic resume, as well as speed up your application processes.

LinkedIn has a built-in resume builder that uses the data on your profile to generate the ideal CV. The feature even suggests keywords to include based on the job you’re applying for. We’re going to tell you when you should and shouldn’t use LinkedIn’s resume builder, and how to make the most of it.

When you should use LinkedIn resume builder

If you already have a LinkedIn profile, a couple of quick updates are probably good enough to bring it up to date. You can add your current job position, responsibilities, and achievements to the profile, and then you’re ready to use the resume builder.

If you feel you haven’t had the time to make a great resume, then you can use the information you already have on LinkedIn to generate one automatically. From that point, you only need to shorten it to fit it on one or two pages, and make sure that you’re using all the relevant keywords for the position you want.

(Adding keywords is important because many firms use automated resume scanning software that outright rejects applications if it doesn’t detect certain words. LinkedIn’s resume builder saves you the hassle of finding these keywords as well.)

The best thing is that you can build your resume without affecting anything mentioned in your LinkedIn profile. All the changes you make will be restricted to your new resume.

How to use LinkedIn’s resume builder

To build your resume on LinkedIn, go to your profile by clicking the Me button in the top bar next to your Notifications, and hitting View Profile .

Once your profile is open, click  More below your name, description, and location. This will open a drop-down menu where you can select Build a resume .

LinkedIn will allow you to either upload a resume you’ve already created or build one from your profile. Click Create from profile to start generating your resume. This is when LinkedIn asks for the title of the job that you’re applying for, so that it can suggest relevant keywords. Type the job title and click Apply .

You’ll now see a preview of your LinkedIn-generated resume. The right pane will show information on matching keywords found in your profile and suggested keywords that you could consider including. In the left pane, you’ll see a pencil icon next to each section in your resume. Just click the pencil to start editing. Most people would be looking for some brevity to make the resume fit on one page, which is fairly easy.

To check if your resume fits on a single page, click the Preview button on top for a good idea of how your resume looks. Feel free to keep tweaking it until you’re satisfied, and then click  More and select Download as PDF to save your resume to your computer.

When you should avoid LinkedIn’s resume builder

LinkedIn’s resume builder isn’t perfect—it has a few shortcomings that make it unsuitable for some, especially consider that it generates a plain-looking resume that might not exactly stand out. If you’re applying in a creative field like being a designer, you might want to consider looking for a more attractive resume template on Google Docs or Microsoft Word, or designing one from scratch to show off your skills.

And, if you don’t have a LinkedIn profile yet, it’s not worth building one just to generate resumes. If you already have your work experience listed on your LinkedIn profile, it's easy to get the site to automatically generate a resume for you. Here's how to do it.

All LinkedIn profiles include a button to download the profile as a PDF . This PDF is basically your resume, containing all the experiences you've listed on LinkedIn. This includes your academics, work experiences, and everything else that you have on your profile.

To download this quick resume, first, open LinkedIn in a web browser on your computer. When LinkedIn opens, click your profile icon at the top of the site and select "View Profile."

On the profile page, right beneath your profile picture, click the "More" option, and select "Save to PDF."

In a few moments, your browser will start downloading your resume PDF from LinkedIn.

That's all there is to generating a quick automatic resume from LinkedIn, but you might not want to send it exactly as it is to potential employers. In that case, check out the section below.

The resume that you downloaded above includes all the information that you have on your LinkedIn profile. If you want to add, edit, or delete certain sections of the resume, use LinkedIn's resume creation tool. It lets you choose what sections you want to include in or exclude from your resume. When you're happy with the result, you can download it as a PDF to your computer.

To start building your custom resume, open LinkedIn in your web browser. On LinkedIn, click your profile icon at the top-right corner and select "View Profile."

On the profile page, in the section at the top, select "More," and then click "Build a resume." This launches LinkedIn's resume creation tool in your browser.

In the "Select a Resume" pop-up that appears, click the "Create From Profile" button at the bottom.

In the following box that says "Choose your desired job title," click the "Job Title" box, and then enter your current job title. Then, select a title from the suggested options and click "Apply" at the bottom.

You're now on LinkedIn's resume creation tool screen. Here, you can add and exclude whatever information you want in your resume. To add or remove a section in your resume, click the pencil icon next to a section on the page.

The site will open a box with your selected section in it. Here, you can modify the contents of your section and click "Save" at the bottom of the box to save your changes. Or, you can click "Delete" to remove this section from your resume altogether.

When you've finished editing your resume, click "Preview" at the top of the LinkedIn site to preview your resume.

If you're happy with the result, click "More" at the top of the LinkedIn site, and then select "Download as PDF." This will download your resume as a PDF to your computer.

In addition to the ability to download your own resume, you can also download other LinkedIn members' resumes. You don't need to be connected with a member to be able to download their resume, but there's a limit of 200 downloads for others' resumes. (You can download your own resume an unlimited number of times, though.)

To download someone's profile, first, open their profile on LinkedIn . On the profile page, right beneath the cover image (the large image at the top of the page), click the "More" option, and then select "Save to PDF."

Hey Job Seekers—You Know How to Use LinkedIn Resumes and LinkedIn Premium, Right?

Once considered an online resume in and of itself, your LinkedIn profile was designed to provide a comprehensive look at your work history, skill set, education, and even a dash of your personal brand. Now, however, with various advancements to the site, there’s even more you can do to get noticed by recruiters and boost your job seeking possibilities.

Take the LinkedIn resume feature as an example. While it’s no replacement for the standard, tailored resume you send out to employers, it’s a surprisingly valuable way to learn more about your own skills and expertise . Which, if you’re stuck in a rut or not sure where to start, can be incredibly helpful. As Muse writer Rich Moy says, he learned his journey from recruiter to full-time writer wasn't quite as haphazard as it felt. That knowledge made it easier for him to sell his story to hiring managers.

Another overlooked feature? LinkedIn Premium.

Of course, before we go any further and you consider spending any money, you’ll want to make sure that you have a basic understanding of how to use LinkedIn . I know, I know, you already think you do. But because the site can be so powerful, it’s worth running through the basics before we get anymore advanced. For example, do you have key words in your profile ? A clear photo ? A good headline ? Are you engaging with other users? I hope yes, yes, yes, and more yes.

Ok, now that we’ve run through that and you’ve made all the necessary changes (right?), back to the fun stuff!

What Is LinkedIn Premium, Exactly?

Good question! The premium membership goes beyond the basic free version; it’s called premium for a reason, after all. There are four levels of the service: There’s the base version called Job Seeker ($30/month); the Business Plan (~$48/month); Sales Navigator (~$65/month); and Recruiter Lite (~$100/month).

Unless you’re in an active recruiting role, you can probably ignore Recruiter Lite. Same goes for the Sales Navigator option. Since the Job Seeker option is the most relevant one to professionals seeking, well, jobs, it gets high marks from users who credit it with assisting them in landing interviews (and then, hopefully, offers). With this access, users get to send InMail messages to three people a month, regardless of whether or not they’re connected. You also get to see who’s viewed your profile and look at analytics on what other candidates they’re also viewing, intel that, if you’re trying to land a job in a competitive market, can be helpful to see.

Business Plus is a step up in what it offers and what it costs. Instead of three InMail messages, you can send up to 15, and you can also view the profiles of anyone as long as there’s a three-degree connection.

What Are Linkedin Premium Benefits?

Another solid question (that you should always ask before paying for anything). Job Seeker users I spoke with for this article had mostly glowing reviews: “I loved seeing when my application had been viewed by the employer, I enjoyed the stats, I felt like I got noticed quicker and definitely got more responses,” “You can also see who is viewing your profile and insights on jobs you apply to via LinkedIn such as how many applicants to that position and how you compare to those applicants,” “The added tools are helpful and the outward appearance of your account definitely are both a step up [from the free LinkedIn account],” “I really loved it as a job searcher—helped with networking and finding the right contacts at the companies I was interested in.”

Since it’s relatively inexpensive for what it promises, it’s not hard to see why some people choose to ditch the standard free account in favor of this version. For example, if you see that a hiring manager at a company you’re interested in looked at you, you can then reach out. While it definitely takes some courage on your part, sending an InMail message along the following lines really can’t hurt:

Hi [Name of Hiring Manager],

I was hoping to touch base with you about the [name of position]. After learning [recent news or fun fact about the company], I’m more excited than ever about the opportunity. I see that you’re overseeing the department, and if, in fact, you’re the person hiring for this role, I’d love to ask you a few questions about the position and see if it would be a good fit for my skill set. Please let me know if that would be possible or if there's someone else I might connect with regarding this position.

Thanks for your time.

Best, [Your Name]

Or, let’s say you actually already applied for a position within the organization; you can assume that the person received your materials and is now checking out your social media presence post-application to get a sense of who you are and what you’ve accomplished. While you can’t do much with that information, it is slightly reassuring to know that you’re moving along in the process.

Should I Get It?

Depends on what you’re looking for right now. If you’re actively searching for a new job, it’s not the worst idea. And, if you’re still more than a little unsure, know that the site does offer a free monthly trial. If you decide that the benefits are worth it, you can keep the Premium level—at least until you land your next gig. Just a word of warning: It doesn’t remind you when your month is up, so if you want to avoid that charge, make sure to make a cancellation note on your calendar. Pastor killed in house fire after running back inside to save his grandchildren, family friend says

MADISON, Wis. ( WMTV /Gray News) - A pastor who was killed in a house fire ran back inside to save his grandchildren, a family friend said.

Steve Witte and five family members were killed in the house fire early Sunday morning.

“It was such a tremendous loss, that many deaths within the same family,” Pastor Larry Schlomer said.

Schlomer was heading home from a trip when he got a text about Witte’s death and the fire.

“It was startling. We live our life being ready for that moment when we get to meet our Savior, but when it happens like this, it is a startling moment,” he said.

Schlomer said Witte was selfless until the very end.

“He actually made it out of the house and found out that two of his granddaughters were still inside,” Schlomer said. “He went back in seeing if he could save them and unfortunately did not make it.”

Witte had recently returned home after being in Thailand for months doing missionary work.

“His wife, Mary, his children, those were so important. That’s why they were gathered so they could enjoy some time while he was back from his mission field,” Schlomer said.

Although grief lingers, he will never forget how Pastor Witte loved others.

“His passion for the gospel, for the Good News about hope for eternity, is something that drove him to do everything that he did,” Schlomer said.

The church pastoral team is offering support to those who need it. It also created a fundraiser on GiveSendGo to support the family and is working to organize a meal train.

The sheriff’s office said the fire is believed to be accidental, and an investigation is ongoing.

Top players in Rays history? Yandy Diaz is joining the conversation

ST. PETERSBURG — Evan Longoria still is, and perhaps always will be, the best player in Rays franchise history. Carl Crawford is a strong No. 2.

Discussion over who would join them on a Rays Mount Rushmore includes Kevin Kiermaier, David Price, James Shields and Ben Zobrist, and it could be a somewhat lively debate.

But there’s a current player swinging his way into the conversation: Yandy Diaz.

On Friday, Diaz, 32, claimed a notable team record, extending his hitting streak to 20 games, surpassing the mark of 19 Jason Bartlett set in 2009 and held for 14 seasons. Diaz also extended his on-base streak to 29 games, ninth longest for a Ray, and sixth best in a single season.

And there’s plenty more on his hits list:

• Last season, Diaz became the first player in franchise history to win an American League batting title, with a team-record .330 average.

• He was sixth in the 2023 AL MVP voting (matching Longoria for the highest finish by a Ray), won team most valuable honors and was voted an All-Star starter.

• The Rays have been to the postseason in each of Diaz’s first five seasons, with him playing an increasingly key role. Only Kiermaier, by the technicality of his 2013 Game 163 callup, also was a part of five Tampa Bay postseason teams.

• Despite playing in only 602 Rays games (through Friday), Diaz ranks on the franchise top-10 lists for a number of counting stats: hits (639, seventh), RBIs (288, 10th), runs (328, eighth), singles (443, seventh), doubles (126, seventh), walks (297, sixth), total bases (972, ninth), times on base (957, eighth).

• His current .376 on-base percentage as a Ray ranks second to Fred McGriff’s .380 and his .816 OPS fifth, but Diaz’s OPS+ (adjusted for league and ballpark, with 100 the average) is a franchise-best 130.

By baseball-reference.com’s bWAR, the top players in Rays franchise history are Longoria (51.2), Crawford (35.6), Zobrist (35.3), Kiermaier (31.7), Price (21.2), Shields (20.0), Carlos Peña (18.1), Scott Kazmir (16.5), BJ Upton (15.6) and Brandon Lowe (14.4). Diaz, who gets knocked down for his defense, is next at 13.5.

Fangraphs.com, using a slightly different formula for fWAR, has Longoria (48.1), Crawford (36.9), Zobrist (33.1), Shields (24), Kiermaier (23.6), Upton (22.5), Price (21.9), Kazmir (15.8), Peña (14.1) and Lowe (13.6), with Diaz at 13.5.

Starter Aaron Civale called Diaz “a catalyst.” Manager Kevin Cash referenced his consistency and referred to him as an “on-base machine.” Outfielder Jose Siri pointed out “he’s a great hitter.” Starter Zach Eflin said he was “incredible” and noted “he means so much to this team.”

At the 2018 winter meetings when the Rays acquired Diaz from Cleveland, where he’d spent most of his time in the minors, neither side was exactly sure how it would work out.

The Rays obviously had high hopes, giving up one-time promising first baseman Jake Bauers and, for them, a hefty $5 million in a three-team trade that also included Seattle and getting reliever Cole Sulser.

Diaz, around dealing with injuries, got comfortable with the team and himself, emerging as a productive leadoff hitter with a consistent approach and an eye for getting on base. Last season he flexed his massive muscles and added the long-sought power component, hitting 22 homers while winning the batting crown. This year, he has battled back from a slow start (.211 with a .556 OPS through May 1, .243/.670 through June 1) to reach .274/.721 on Friday.

“I give credit to the team for giving me the opportunity,” Diaz said Friday night, via team interpreter Manny Navarro. “And Kevin Cash for giving me the confidence in being able to play every day. I thank God for that.”

Solondz jammed up

Radio broadcaster Neil Solondz found himself in quite a tight spot after Tuesday’s game.

Driving to his North Pinellas home with wife Sari, he dropped his phone under the car seat. Once in the driveway, Solondz reached far down between the seat and console for the phone, and his right wrist got stuck.

He had to call 911 to free him. Paramedics used inflated blood pressure cuffs to shift the seat cushion, then loosened the floor bolt to move the seat.

“Super embarrassing,” Solondz said Friday, his wrist still bruised. “More embarrassing than painful.”

Deadlines, deadlines

Dominican Republic prosecutors reportedly are facing a Friday deadline to present formal accusations against Wander Franco, stemming from his alleged relationship with a minor girl that has kept him away from the team since mid August. … After several delays, the St. Petersburg City Council vote on the new Rays stadium and Gas Plant District redevelopment plan is now officially scheduled for July 18 . That is the first of two steps for final approval, with the Pinellas County Commission vote expected sometime after.

After his record was broken Friday , Bartlett texted head home clubhouse/equipment manager Tyler Wall to pass on his congratulations to Diaz and the message: “Hope it lasts for a long time.” … A social media post last week claiming Franco, who is on administrative leave, was working out at a Rays facility was quickly dismissed as false. Dominican journalist Mike Rodriguez the next day posted video of Franco taking batting practice in his hometown of Bani. ... Sports Illustrated’s SI.com gave the City Connect uniforms some major love with a No. 1 ranking among the 28 participating teams: “There’s the Mona Lisa, the Sistine Chapel and the Tampa Bay Rays’ City Connect uniforms.” … Per early versions of the 2025 schedule circulating among teams and league officials, the Rays will open at home against Colorado and Pittsburgh and finish at Toronto. … The Rays’ All-Star(s) could be chosen in the vote by players for reserves and pitchers, or by MLB officials as they fill out the rosters and make sure all teams are represented. And to think, last year they had four All-Stars, with Randy Arozarena and Diaz starting. … Centerfielder Jose Siri spent Thursday’s off-day at Busch Gardens riding Gwazi and other roller coasters, saying “It’s good for your stress.” … The team on Wednesday staged its first Casino Night fundraiser since pre-COVID, with rave reviews and proceeds to the Rays Baseball Foundation. … ESPN SportsCenter’s hosts still find it funny to say the Rays play in Tampa, then later acknowledge it’s St. Petersburg.
