The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) is an important exam for Malaysian pre-university students who aspire to pursue higher education or secure better job opportunities. 

Administered by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) since 2001, this English examination is required for public university admission. 

By conducting the examination, institutions can gauge the readiness of Malaysian university students, particularly, for academic coursework. 

It also serves as a standard benchmark for assessing their English comprehension in different tertiary education contexts. 

As such, Malaysian pre-university students who plan to sit for the MUET are advised to prepare thoroughly, as it is notably more challenging than Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). 

What Is MUET?

As mentioned earlier, MUET is a prerequisite for admission to public universities, so you must understand the examination structure before registering for it. 

It comprises four English assessments which are Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening. 

To provide an overview of the MUET exam structure, here is a breakdown: 

1. Speaking

The speaking test is split into two parts which are individual and group interaction, and last 30 minutes. 

For Task 1, you will have to give a presentation on a particular topic, with 2 minutes of preparation followed by 2 minutes of speaking. 

Moving on to Task 2, you will be grouped with three other candidates and given 3 minutes to prepare. 

The group will then have between 8 and 12 minutes to discuss a question provided by the examiner. 

2. Listening 

The listening test lasts for 50 minutes and comprises 30 questions. 

The questions may be in the form of information transfer, short-answer, or multiple-choice questions (MCQs). 

The candidates will hear each recorded dialogue twice, so paying close attention to the details is crucial.

3. Reading 

The reading test is 75 minutes long and consists of 40 multiple-choice and matching questions.

The writing test is 75 minutes long and comprises two tasks. 

The first task is guided writing, and the MUET candidates must write at least 100 words. 

The second task involves extended writing on a given topic and the minimum word count is 250.  

Usually, these assessments are conducted on different days. For instance, the speaking test differs from the Reading, Writing, and Listening tests.

Therefore, as a Malaysian pre-university student, you need to keep track of the examination date and month as it is based on the registration session. 

However, if you are unable to make it for any of the dates, you may opt for MUET on Demand (MoD). 

In addition, MUET may not affect grades in pre-university programs. 

However, it is an essential examination for students who wish to pursue higher education in public universities.

Pre-university students in Malaysia can register for their MUET examination through an institution or Malaysian Examination Council portal website . 

They must fill in their details accurately and pay the required fee; RM100. 

This fee can be paid through online banking, buying a MEC PIN at the nearest Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) branch counter, or using a credit card. 

If a student wishes to take the exam on a different date than the scheduled one (MoD), they can register online through the same web portal. 

However, the MoD’s fee is RM250.

MUET Band Score

The MUET band score is categorized into five levels which are A2, B1, B2, C1, and C1+.

They can obtain the results from their institution or MEC (if they are private candidates) or check their results via the MEC portal or SMS service.

Argumentative essay structure for muet.

In an argumentative essay as the word suggests, you will have to present arguments for why you agree or disagree to the topic . This is the type of essay that will ask you to take a clear stand on the topic being discussed.

You will then need to explain your position on the topic by presenting a systematic reasoning regarding the subject matter. This should be done in such a way that it is going to make it easier for the reader to understand your way of thinking.

In this blog I’m going to take you step by step on how to write an argumentative essay. You will understand the structure of an argumentative essay and how to explain yourself in the different paragraphs.

Types of essay in MUET task 2

The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) writing task 2 will consist of only one essay question. They are going to be one of these three types of essays :

• A discursive essay
• An argumentative essay
• A problem-solution essay

The argumentative essay is one type of essay that you may get in the MUET writing task 2. You are going to have to take a stand and to write your arguments out clearly based on the statement given.

In making your stand you are going to choose whether you agree, disagree or partially agree to the subject matter.

From my experience as a teacher, I could see that in a well written argumentative essay, the student is able to engage the reader well.

This student is able to explain the issue being discussed by presenting arguments agreeing or disagreeing to the topic and considering it from different perspectives. This could also involve presenting the counter arguments for the topic. When you present a counter argument, you are giving the opposing view of what you have said before.

Let’s now look at a sample question for an argumentative essay that you may get for MUET writing task 2.

This is a sample of an argumentative essay question that you can get in MUET writing task 2.

Before going any further I would like to highlight the task that you will need to fulfil. Here in the red box is your task. It is asking you of how far you agree to this statement. Here it is clear to see that this is going to be written as an argumentative essay.

You will need to remember the main objective of writing an argumentative essay. It is for you to persuade the reader to understand the points that you are making and to agree with your views. You are writing to influence the reader to think your way.

The topic of discussion for this essay is the statement given by the guest speaker. And the statement given was that ‘Money is the key to happiness’.

On the day of the MUET writing paper, the first thing that you need to do will be to read the question carefully and to make sense of the question.

Let’s find out more about the topic and the task here in this question.

This topic suggests that money is the determining factor to achieve happiness in one’s life. Without money then, the person will not achieve happiness. The person will not be happy.

After understanding the question the next thing you need to do is to take a stand. Decide on whether you agree, disagree or partially agree to this statement.

How do you decide on your stand? Well, you will choose the stand where you have a lot to write about. Choose your side where you have more content points to write about and where you could easily explain you ideas.

In order to decide your stand you are going to brainstorm on the content points first. 

These are the content points that you can have for your essay.

• Able to buy things and new experiences
• Brighter future
• Meaningful relationships are key

Based on the content points that you have come up with you can now make your stand. You then decide to take the middle ground and say that you partially agree to the topic. 

You will then choose two points to agree and another one point to disagree.

The argumentative essay that you will be writing will be made up of 5 paragraphs. The five paragraphs are as such:

• Paragraph 1

Introduction

• Paragraph 2
• Reason to agree in topic sentence 1 [TS1]
• Paragraph 3
• Reason to agree in topic sentence 2 [TS2]
• Paragraph 4
• Reason to disagree in topic sentence 3 [TS3]
• Paragraph 5

So, the structure given here is for the essay where you are going to partially agree.

The three content points would be made up of two content points to show that you agree and the third content point would be one to show that you disagree to the statement.

I normally advise my students to choose the middle ground when writing an argumentative essay. So basically, I encourage my students to take the stand of partially agreeing when writing an argumentative essay.

I encourage them to do this because I believe that writing an argumentative essay where you partially agree shows that you are quite knowledgeable in the topic. Here the students will have to provide both sides of the arguments for and against the topic being discussed.

This certainly shows critical thinking on the student’s part.

However, it is equally fine if a student decides to choose to take a stand to totally agree or to totally disagree on the topic.

Start your essay with an introduction. The stand that you are making in the introduction is that you are partially agreeing to the topic.

• INTRODUCTION
• Background information related to the topic
• Thesis statement
• Make your stand

Start your introduction with a hook. A hook is something interesting or clever that you say in the start of your essay to attract the reader to read on. Relate this hook to the topic of money being the key to happiness.

Next provide some background information on the topic being discussed. Add in observations that you made regarding money and how it affects people’s lives.

After this you will need to write your thesis statement. A thesis statement summarises your content points to support your argument for why you have chosen to partially agree to the topic. 

The last sentence in your introduction will be you making your stand. 

The body paragraphs contain ideas for or against the topic. This is where you are going to influence the reader to see your point of view from the content points that you present.

Because this essay is going to take the middle stand where you are going to partially agree, the paragraphs are going to be arranged as such.

Content 1 and 2 support the topic

This is how the paragraphs for the content points are going to be written. Content 1 and 2 will be you presenting your arguments on why you agree that money could be the key source of happiness.

This would be how you will write these paragraphs.

• Use a sequence connector like 'firstly, first and foremost' etc.
• Justify the reason to agree
• Provide evidence with an example
• Close paragraph

Start your first content point with a sequence connector. These are such as ‘First and foremost’ etc. I always tell my students to always have sequence connectors as it will provide your essay with more structure.

After the sequence connector is your topic sentence 1. TS1 is where you will provide your first reason for why you agree that money is key to a person’s happiness.

After stating the reason you will of course need to justify why you said that. Also provide an example for your reason. You will need to tie up your example with the TS1 to ensure that what you have said is relevant to the point you are making.

The last sentence will be the closinig of the paragraph. You can reinstate TS1 here by rephrasing the sentence. Make this sentence sound like it is the closing of the paragraph.

Move on to the second content point after this.

• Use a sequence connector example like moreover, next, in addition etc.

Start the second content point with a sequence connector. Use a sequence connector that signals the continuation of your points. You can use sequence connectors such as ‘Moreover.., In addition..’ etc.

Using this will tell the reader that the paragraph you are writing is a continuation from the paragraph before and that you are still agreeing to the topic.

Provide your second reason for why your agree to the topic in topic sentence 2. Like the paragraph before provide a rationale for why you agree that money is the key to happiness. And after this add in evidence for why you feel that way.

Lastly have a closing for your paragraph by reinstating your TS2. Again this closing sentence would need to sound like you are ending the point that you are making. 

Content 3 contains the counterargument

The third content point contains the counterargument for the topic. When you provide a counterargument for a topic you are presenting a reason to oppose the idea.

• Use a sequence connector like 'Nevertheless., On the other hand.., However..' etc.
• Reason to agree in topic sentence 3 [TS3]

Again, start your paragraph with a sequence connector. Use a sequence connector that signals the contrast of an idea. It is important for you to use one here as you are informing the reader that you are presenting a counterargument of your ideas before.

Use ‘on the other hand or however, to do this. Then add in your reason for why you are disagreeing to the topic. Here you are now saying that you feel money is not the key to happiness and that you are giving another suggestion. 

Justify why you feel this way. Provide an example to make your point become clearer. You can mention perhaps about what you can read in the papers of examples of how unhappy the rich and famous could become. This is regardless the factof having so much money.

Finally provide a closing for this paragraph.

Lastly is the conclusion of your essay. This is where you summarize the points that you have given and reinstate your stand on the topic.

• Use a sequence connector like 'In conclusion.., To conclude..' etc.
• State the topic of discussion
• Summarize your content points
• Recap your opinion on the matter [balanced view]

Use  asequence connector like ‘finally or to conclude’ to signal that this is your concluding paragraph. Next add in the topic of discussion to remind the reader again of the topic.

Provide a summary of the three content points for your essay. It is important that you rephrase your points so that it does not sound like you are repeating yourself. 

Next recap your opinion regarding the topic. Present it in such a way that you agree to the topic but to a certain extent only as you also feel that you also disagree to it. Provide a balanced view here.

Lastly give your conclusion an ending.You can mention about a hope perhaps that our society could find that balance of having money and other improtant aspects of life.

Do you know what's one of the greatest nightmares one can have when they need to write well?

You probably have heard this term: writer's block .

It could be caused by various reasons, whether it's the "lack" of inspiration or understanding about the subject you need to write, the inability to articulate your ideas on paper, self-doubt about the direction of your writing and other distractions.

Just take a moment to imagine having writer's block when you are sitting for the writing component of your Malaysian University English Test. You might start breaking into cold sweat at the sheer thought of it.

Having said that, writing good essays within a given time frame is not an impossible feat when you have a clear strategy from the very beginning.

In this article, we will look at five important strategies to produce quality essays for the two sections of your MUET writing component.

Strategy 1: Read Extensively On Various Topics (Academic/Non-Academic)

Most of the time, students often find it hard to write about something they cannot relate to instead of a "difficult topic".

The main reason you cannot relate to the topic is simply because you are not familiar with it. To be familiar with a specific topic, you need to read extensively about it or do research about the subject.

For instance, in order to write a good essay on the topic of artificial intelligence, you need to have a broad understanding of the topic. There needs to be layers (depth and width) and connections of points when you write your essay.

A good essay is not made up by merely mentioning an example such as ChatGPT, but you also need to know the pros and cons of using artificial intelligence in our daily lives, and how it influences various industries such as the medical industry, higher education and so forth.

It's also important to note that the themes that are asked in this component usually revolve around what's happening around us such as the economy, education, social issues, technology, health and so on.

We strongly encourage you to read newspapers (physical or online) or sample essays from reference books to identify the necessary jargon, sentence structure and overall flow of ideas on a diverse range of topics.

Following the example of artificial intelligence earlier, you would come across words like machine learning, algorithms and ethics when you are reading a related article.  From there, you will know how to apply them correctly the next time you need to write an essay based on this topic.

If you are planning to sit for MUET in 2024, gain a c omprehensive understanding of what to expect for your MUET papers.

Strategy 2: Know The Different Formats & Tones For Different Writing Tasks

The MUET writing component consists of two tasks.

For Task 1 (guided writing), candidates are required to write a letter or an email of at least 100 words.

On the other hand, candidates are required to write an essay (argumentative, discursive or problem-solution) of at least 250 words for Task 2 (extended writing).

Task 1 is essentially guided by a specific format and tone.

Writing a letter or email requires you to begin with salutations and a proper transition to what you want to convert to the recipient of your letter or email. As mentioned earlier, it shouldn't be too long (please always follow the given word limit!) so it requires candidates to be precise and concise throughout their writing.

For Task 2, candidates need to plan their ideas ahead and present their essay in a clear order: introduction, body, and conclusion.

When it comes to argumentative essays, candidates will need to state their main argument from the start (pick a position) and come out with valid and strong proof to support their argument.

For instance, should tertiary education be free for all? If you choose to disagree with this statement, you need to come out with at least 3 points to support your argument in order to persuade the examiner.

When it comes to discursive essays, candidates can present a neutral stand on the given topic. This means you can agree and disagree and present the topic through both sides.

Taking the same topic on free tertiary education earlier, you can express why you agree and disagree with this statement. You do not need to have a strong stance on either of these positions.

When it comes to problem-solving essays, it is pretty straightforward. First, you need to identify the problem and then address the problem by giving relevant solutions.

For instance, the example given is, "How can we curb online bullying among the younger generation?"

The problem that candidates need to solve is online bullying. They need to highlight why is it a problem and how this problem can be solved through different angles.

Strategy 3: Understand What The Question Wants (Purpose)

After reviewing the format and tone of the writing tasks, let us now move to the next part.

You need to know what the question is asking for each task. For instance, when it comes to writing an email or letter in Task 1, candidates need to clearly recognise the following cues:

• Asked to describe experiences, feelings, events
• Accepting/rejecting an invitation 
• Expressing gratitude, apologies, preferences 
• Requesting something beforehand/on behalf of someone else
• Giving advice, opinions, and feedback on a particular event/experience 

When it comes to Task 2, candidates need to clearly differentiate the characteristics and differences of the three types of essays: argumentative, discursive and problem-solution. 

Many students are confused between argumentative and discursive essays because they both require candidates to indicate their stand.

One tip to remember them is to connect the word "argue" with argumentative (one side needs to win) and the word "discuss" with discursive (both sides can win). 

Ultimately, it's worth noting that the purpose of an argumentative essay is to PERSUADE, the purpose of a discursive essay is to INFORM and the purpose of a problem-solution essay is to ANALYZE.

Strategy 4: Present Your Thoughts Systematically — A Clear Structure

Once you have mastered the skill to review the format and question requirement, it's time to put what you have learnt into real action.

Your massive ideas and knowledge about the topic mean nothing if you are unable to write them in clarity and order.

We have mentioned earlier how to form the basic structure of your essay: Introduction, Body and Conclusion.

For Task 1, your introduction should consist of the basic salutations (Dear Peter/ Dear Jane, use the given name or specify the identity of the recipient). Next, the body should address the purpose of the writing followed by the conclusion, which is to wrap up what has been mentioned and bid your goodbyes (signing off).

Things are slightly more complex for Task 2. Depending on which essay you are assigned, you would need to address different things in the introduction.

An argumentative essay requires you to state a clear thesis statement from the beginning. Meaning to say, you need to indicate your stand (agree/disagree) as you begin.

For discursive essays, you need to mention the two stands of the given topic. Last but not least, for the introduction of problem-solving essays, you need to address the problem that you need to solve.

For the body of the essay structure, you should focus on giving 3 to 4 points. Argumentative essays require you to give at least 3 points on why you chose the particular stand.  Remember, the points given must be consistent and in alignment with your stand in the introduction.

For discursive essays, you can alternate between the two stands. And for problem solution essays, you stick to providing the solutions.

When it comes to writing the conclusion, you just need to refer to your stand in the introduction and do a concise summary of your points.

Strategy 5: Proofread Your Writing (Spelling, Grammar, Vocabulary)

With all the points and structure laid down, you are now facing your final hurdle! Your flair for the English language.

This is what sets you apart from other candidates. Examiners can tell at a glance whether you are an excellent candidate from your language skills. The most obvious one is the level of vocabulary you are using throughout your writing, which is followed by your grammar and spelling.

Apart from practising your essay writing skills, there are some tricks you can adopt to do well in this section. Here are some important MUET writing tips.

Getting familiarised

Make sure you know the structure of the paper like the back of your hand. Understand its basic structure first. Refer to MUET reference books to better understand the format.

Do task 2 first

Start doing task 2 first because it’s worth a lot of marks and it’s easier. Once you’ve completed this section, you’ll feel a lot more confident to tackle task 1. Also, writing your first essay is also more difficult as your train of thoughts have not been organised yet. Doing this will get you started on the right foot.

Don’t waste too much time on task 1

Remember – learning all specific writing structure for each type of task 1 and applying that structure will help you save so much more time. All you have to do is to apply new data and suitable verb tenses. To do well in this, read sample essays and take note of good essay structures.

Never leave out any tasks

No matter how difficult you find the test, never leave out any tasks. If you do, you’ll be penalized heavily.

Practise, practise, practise

Practise both tasks 1 and 2 within an hour. Writing those essays within the time limit at home will give you an idea of how much time you need to gather thoughts, to start writing and to check your final work.

Buy a good dictionary

To be able to write well, you need a wide vocabulary. Invest in a good dictionary or thesaurus. The Oxford and Miriam Webster dictionaries are some of the best ones out there.

Always include…

Each paragraph has to include a topic sentence, 2-3 supporting sentences and development sentences such as examples, experience and data. Although the topic sentence doesn’t always have to be at the beginning of the paragraph, students who are weak in writing are advised to stick to this structure. Don’t try to be overly creative as you might end up making silly mistakes.

CHICAGO — When she started writing her college essay, Hillary Amofa told the story she thought admissions offices wanted to hear. About being the daughter of immigrants from Ghana and growing up in a small apartment in Chicago. About hardship and struggle.

Then she deleted it all.

“I would just find myself kind of trauma-dumping,” said the 18-year-old senior at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago. “And I’m just like, this doesn’t really say anything about me as a person.”

When the Supreme Court ended affirmative action in higher education, it left the college essay as one of few places where race can play a role in admissions decisions. For many students of color, instantly more was riding on the already high-stakes writing assignment. Some say they felt pressure to exploit their hardships as they competed for a spot on campus.

Amofa was just starting to think about her essay when the court issued its decision, and it left her with a wave of questions. Could she still write about her race? Could she be penalized for it? She wanted to tell colleges about her heritage but she didn’t want to be defined by it.

In English class, Amofa and her classmates read sample essays that all seemed to focus on some trauma or hardship. It left her with the impression she had to write about her life’s hardest moments to show how far she’d come. But she and some of her classmates wondered if their lives had been hard enough to catch the attention of admissions offices.

“For a lot of students, there’s a feeling of, like, having to go through something so horrible to feel worthy of going to school, which is kind of sad,” said Amofa, the daughter of a hospital technician and an Uber driver.

This year’s senior class is the first in decades to navigate college admissions without affirmative action. The Supreme Court upheld the practice in decisions going back to the 1970s, but this court’s conservative supermajority found it is unconstitutional for colleges to give students extra weight because of their race alone.

Still, the decision left room for race to play an indirect role: Chief Justice John Roberts wrote universities can still consider how an applicant’s life was shaped by their race, “so long as that discussion is concretely tied to a quality of character or unique ability.”

“A benefit to a student who overcame racial discrimination, for example, must be tied to that student’s courage and determination,” he wrote.

Scores of colleges responded with new essay prompts asking about students’ backgrounds. Brown University asked applicants how “an aspect of your growing up has inspired or challenged you.” Rice University asked students how their perspectives were shaped by their “background, experiences, upbringing, and/or racial identity.”

Do schools ‘expect a sob story’?

When Darrian Merritt started writing his essay, he knew the stakes were higher than ever because of the court’s decision. His first instinct was to write about events that led to him going to live with his grandmother as a child.

Those were painful memories, but he thought they might play well at schools like Yale, Stanford and Vanderbilt.

“I feel like the admissions committee might expect a sob story or a tragic story,” said Merritt, a senior in Cleveland. “And if you don’t provide that, then maybe they’re not going to feel like you went through enough to deserve having a spot at the university. I wrestled with that a lot.”

He wrote drafts focusing on his childhood, but it never amounted to more than a collection of memories. Eventually he abandoned the idea and aimed for an essay that would stand out for its positivity.

Merritt wrote about a summer camp where he started to feel more comfortable in his own skin. He described embracing his personality and defying his tendency to please others. The essay had humor — it centered on a water gun fight where he had victory in sight but, in a comedic twist, slipped and fell. But the essay also reflects on his feelings of not being “Black enough” and getting made fun of for listening to “white people music.”

“I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to write this for me, and we’re just going to see how it goes,’” he said. “It just felt real, and it felt like an honest story.”

The essay describes a breakthrough as he learned “to take ownership of myself and my future by sharing my true personality with the people I encounter. ... I realized that the first chapter of my own story had just been written.”

Ruling prompts pivots on essay topics

Like many students, Max Decker of Portland, Ore., had drafted a college essay on one topic, only to change direction after the Supreme Court ruling in June.

Decker initially wrote about his love for video games. In a childhood surrounded by constant change, navigating his parents’ divorce, the games he took from place to place on his Nintendo DS were a source of comfort.

But the essay he submitted to colleges focused on the community he found through Word is Bond, a leadership group for young Black men in Portland.

As the only biracial, Jewish kid with divorced parents in a predominantly white, Christian community, Decker wrote he constantly felt like the odd one out. On a trip with Word is Bond to Capitol Hill, he and friends who looked just like him shook hands with lawmakers. The experience, he wrote, changed how he saw himself.

“It’s because I’m different that I provide something precious to the world, not the other way around,” he wrote.

As a first-generation college student, Decker thought about the subtle ways his peers seemed to know more about navigating the admissions process. They made sure to get into advanced classes at the start of high school, and they knew how to secure glowing letters of recommendation.

If writing about race would give him a slight edge and show admissions officers a fuller picture of his achievements, he wanted to take that small advantage.

His first memory about race, Decker said, was when he went to get a haircut in elementary school and the barber made rude comments about his curly hair. Until recently, the insecurity that moment created led him to keep his hair buzzed short.

Through Word is Bond, Decker said he found a space to explore his identity as a Black man. It was one of the first times he was surrounded by Black peers and saw Black role models. It filled him with a sense of pride in his identity. No more buzzcut.

The pressure to write about race involved a tradeoff with other important things in his life, Decker said. That included his passion for journalism, like the piece he wrote on efforts to revive a once-thriving Black neighborhood in Portland. In the end, he squeezed in 100 characters about his journalism under the application’s activities section.

“My final essay, it felt true to myself. But the difference between that and my other essay was the fact that it wasn’t the truth that I necessarily wanted to share,” said Decker, whose top college choice is Tulane, in New Orleans, because of the region’s diversity. “It felt like I just had to limit the truth I was sharing to what I feel like the world is expecting of me.”

Spelling out the impact of race

Before the Supreme Court ruling, it seemed a given to Imani Laird that colleges would consider the ways that race had touched her life. But now, she felt like she had to spell it out.

As she started her essay, she reflected on how she had faced bias or felt overlooked as a Black student in predominantly white spaces.

There was the year in math class when the teacher kept calling her by the name of another Black student. There were the comments that she’d have an easier time getting into college because she was Black.

“I didn’t have it easier because of my race,” said Laird, a senior at Newton South High School in the Boston suburbs who was accepted at Wellesley and Howard University, and is waiting to hear from several Ivy League colleges. “I had stuff I had to overcome.”

In her final essays, she wrote about her grandfather, who served in the military but was denied access to GI Bill benefits because of his race.

She described how discrimination fueled her ambition to excel and pursue a career in public policy.

“So, I never settled for mediocrity,” she wrote. “Regardless of the subject, my goal in class was not just to participate but to excel. Beyond academics, I wanted to excel while remembering what started this motivation in the first place.”

Will schools lose racial diversity?

Amofa used to think affirmative action was only a factor at schools like Harvard and Yale. After the court’s ruling, she was surprised to find that race was taken into account even at some public universities she was applying to.

Now, without affirmative action, she wondered if mostly white schools will become even whiter.

It’s been on her mind as she chooses between Indiana University and the University of Dayton, both of which have relatively few Black students. When she was one of the only Black students in her grade school, she could fall back on her family and Ghanaian friends at church. At college, she worries about loneliness.

“That’s what I’m nervous about,” she said. “Going and just feeling so isolated, even though I’m constantly around people.”

The first drafts of her essay focused on growing up in a low-income family, sharing a bedroom with her brother and grandmother. But it didn’t tell colleges about who she is now, she said.

Her final essay tells how she came to embrace her natural hair. She wrote about going to a mostly white grade school where classmates made jokes about her afro. When her grandmother sent her back with braids or cornrows, they made fun of those too.

Over time, she ignored their insults and found beauty in the styles worn by women in her life. She now runs a business doing braids and other hairstyles in her neighborhood.

“I stopped seeing myself through the lens of the European traditional beauty standards and started seeing myself through the lens that I created,” Amofa wrote.

“Criticism will persist, but it loses its power when you know there’s a crown on your head!”
