Step 1: Decide on the optimal resume format .

Resumes and CVs come in different shapes:

–  The chronological resume format – the classy one. Lay out all your information in reverse chronological order. Best suited for anyone with a coherent, long-ish career history.

– The functional resume format – drop the timeline and place your skills and experience in the limelight. Best suited for recent graduates , students, interns and anyone changing fields or having employment gaps .

– The combination resume format is a mix of the previous two. It lays out the skills themes, complemented by career/education information. Best suited for startup job applicants, and experienced professionals with transferable skills who want to change industries.

The majority of resume samples we provide use chronological resume format as it’s always a “safe” choice.

Step 2: Get Your Contact Info Sorted Out.

Here are a few tips to nail your contact information on a resume.

– List your first, then the last name. You can drop the middle name if you want to.

– Get a professional email and list it.

– Add a personal or business cell phone number.  

– Add a link to your LinkedIn profile, but only if it’s glossed up and up-to-date.

The don’ts:

– Drop the mailing address. It’s necessary in today’s connected world.

– Don’t add a home landline number.

– Unless you are applying to a job in another state/country, don’t include your personal address.

– Add a title –  if you are applying to a more hip company, add a brief title or personal branding statement next to your name. Example: Joanna Eliason – Social Media Manager; Columnist at Forbes, INC and HBR.

– Add social media links – Twitter is fine if you are active there, as well as account links to niche professional communities such as GitHub (for software developers) or Dribble (for designers).

– Link to your website, blog or portfolio. Only makes sense if you are writing professionally and/or have some work to showcase there. If you run a hobbyist blog, about gardening and applying for a managerial position, your employer doesn’t need to know this.

Step 3: Craft a resume objective or professional summary.

On top of your resume, include a quick paragraph explaining who you are and what you can offer to the organization. Writing resume objectives and summaries are a bit of an art, so check our more detailed guide on this.

Step 4: Jot down your work experience section.

This will be the “meat” of your resume. Make sure that you spend enough time laying out the best bits here. Here are the essential resume writing tips for the work experience section:

– List achievements, instead of duties and responsibilities for each position.

– Add some bragging rights and accomplishments (backed with numbers when possible)

– Tailor your resume to every job posting and add relevant resume keywords taken from job descriptions.

– Spice it up with some resume power words .

When writing a resume, utilize metrics and supporting data whenever possible to show hiring managers not simply WHAT you have done but instead HOW WELL you have done it. Providing high-impact context to experience conveys immediate value to the employer.

Step 5: Showcase your educational background.

Present what you have learned at school, what degrees, certifications and coursework you have completed and how all of this makes you a better candidate than others!

Step 6: Sprinkle the skills.

Again, refer to the job posting to make a list of desirable skills . Next, add those strategically in your resume and highlight the most important ones in a separate section. Be sure to curate both soft and hard skills .

And you are almost done! If you have some space left, you can also include an extra section on your resume that will mention your hobbies, volunteer work , industry awards and accolades.  

Common Mistakes To Avoid When Writing a Resume (and Using Resume Samples)

Resume samples are a great way to get some direction for your job application. But, by no means, you should blindly copy-and-paste an example without giving it many thoughts.

Do “copy” the overall resume format and style, and feel free to pick out some phrases you like. But don’t submit a recycled resume to every job application in your industry.

The biggest resume mistake job seekers make is forgetting to customize.

And to make your resume bullet-proof here’s an additional checklist highlighting the most common resume writing mistakes:

1. Typos and grammatical errors . No one likes sloppiness. Always double proofread your resume.  

2. Getting too lengthy. Try to keep your resume to one page. Two pages are fine for experienced pros going after exec positions. Do not include outdated information from ages ago.

3. Going superfluous. Don’t make claims you cannot bake with data/examples. Also, don’t inflate your title to appear “more important” or “experienced”.

4. A poor resume summary can kill your application immediately . Writing a resume objective which doesn’t match the job or a career summary that doesn’t match the job requirements are major blunders.

5. No action verbs . Be bold and decisive! Use power words, action verbs and active voice.

6. Visually busy resumes will not get read . Get a professional resume template that is easy-to-read and skim.

7. Incorrect contact information. Re-check your phone number and email!

8. Listing irrelevant, generalistic duties. You must show your accomplishment, and key skills that are related to the job, not some general filler statement that no one will read into.

Do you need to write a letter to apply for a job? Most of the time, the answer is yes. Even when employers don’t require a job application letter , writing one will help you highlight your skills and achievements and get the hiring manager’s attention. The only time not to send one is when the job listing says not to do so. It can help, and it definitely won't hurt to include an application letter with your resume.

A job application letter, also known as a cover letter , should be sent or uploaded with your resume when applying for jobs. While your resume offers a history of your work experience and an outline of your skills and accomplishments, the job application letter you send to an employer explains why you are qualified for the position and should be selected for an interview.

Writing this letter can seem like a challenging task. However, if you take it one step at a time, you'll soon be an expert at writing application letters to send with your resume.

Before you begin writing your job application letter, do some groundwork. Consider what information you want to include, and keep in mind that space is limited.

Remember, this letter is making a case for your candidacy for the position. But you should do more than just regurgitate your resume. Instead, highlight your most relevant skills, experiences, and abilities.

Analyze the Job Posting

To include the most convincing, relevant details in your letter, you'll need to know what the employer wants.

The biggest clues are within the job advertisement, so spend some time decoding the job listing . Next, match your qualifications with the employer's wants and needs.

Include Your Most Relevant Qualifications

Make a list of your relevant experience and skills. For instance, if the job ad calls for a strong leader, think of examples of when you've successfully led a team. Once you've jotted down some notes and have a sense of what you want to highlight in your letter, you're ready to start writing.

Writing Guidelines for Job Application Letters

Writing a job application letter is very different from a quick email to a friend or a thank-you note to a relative. Hiring managers and potential interviewers have certain expectations when it comes to the letter's presentation and appearance, from length (no more than a page) and font size to style and letter spacing . Keep these general guidelines in mind, but always stick to any explicit instructions in the job listing or application portal.

Length: A letter of application should be no more than one page long. Three to four paragraphs are typical.

Format and Page Margins: A letter of application should be single-spaced with a space between each paragraph. Use 1-inch margins and align your text to the left, which is the standard alignment for most documents.

Font: Use a traditional font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri. The font size should be between 10 and 12 points.

What to Include in Each Section of the Letter

There are also set rules for the sections included in the letter, from salutation to sign-off, and how the letter is organized. Here's a quick overview of the main sections included in a job application letter:

Heading: A job application letter should begin with both your and the employer's contact information (name, address, phone number, email), followed by the date. If this is an email rather than an actual letter, include your contact information at the end of the letter, after your signature.

  •   Header Examples

Salutation: This is your polite greeting. The most common salutation is "Dear Mr./Ms." followed by the person's last name. Find out more about appropriate cover letter salutations , including what to do if you don't know the person's name or are unsure of a contact's gender.

Body of the letter: Think of this section as having three distinct parts.

In the first paragraph , you'll want to mention the job you are applying for and where you saw the job listing.

The next paragraph(s) are the most important part of your letter. Remember how you gathered information about what the employer was seeking, and how you could meet their needs? This is where you'll share those relevant details on your experience and accomplishments.

The third and last part of the body of the letter will be your thank you to the employer; you can also offer follow-up information.

Complimentary Close: Sign off your email or letter with a polite close, such as "Best," or "Sincerely," followed by your name.

  • Closing Examples

Signature: When you're sending or uploading a printed letter, end with your handwritten signature, followed by your typed name. If this is an email, simply include your typed name, followed by your contact information.

Overwhelmed by all these formatting and organization requirements? One way to make the process of writing a job application easier is to use a template to create your own personalized letters. Having a template can help save you time if you are sending a lot of application letters.

Be sure that each letter you send is personalized to the company and position; do not send the same letter to different companies.

  • Always write one. Unless a job posting explicitly says not to send a letter of application or cover letter, you should always send one. Even if the company does not request a letter of application, it never hurts to include one. If they do ask you to send a letter, make sure to follow the directions exactly (for example, they might ask you to send the letter as an email attachment or type it directly into their online application system).
  • Use business letter format. Use a formal business letter format when writing your letter. Include your contact information at the top, the date, and the employer’s contact information. Be sure to provide a salutation at the beginning and your signature at the end.
  • Sell yourself. Throughout the letter, focus on how you would benefit the company. Provide specific examples of times when you demonstrated skills or abilities that would be useful for the job, especially those listed in the job posting or description. If possible, include examples of times when you added value to a company.

Numerical values offer concrete evidence of your skills and accomplishments.

  • Use keywords. Reread the job listing, taking note of any keywords (such as skills or abilities that are emphasized in the listing). Try to include some of those words in your cover letter. This will help the employer see that you are a strong fit for the job.
  • Keep it brief. Keep your letter under a page long, with no more than about four paragraphs. An employer is more likely to read a concise letter.
  • Proofread and edit. Employers are likely to overlook an application with a lot of errors. Read through your cover letter, and if possible, ask a friend or career counselor to review the letter. Proofread for any grammar or spelling errors.

1. Make your resume summary shine 

First things first, you need to write your resume summary. This is a short blurb that sits directly below your header and tells the hiring manager what you bring to the table. If you want to write a winning summary, it should include the following elements:

Between three and five key skills that align with the role 

One measurable accomplishment from your experience

If you are limited on resume space, you can cut back your work experience section. You may do this by only including a handful of bullet points beneath each position. Consider what your most notable achievements are in each case and include solely those below each role.

What is a Job Application?

Employment application means the letter written for getting a job. It is the primary means of introducing the job seeker to the employer. Through the job application , job seeker offers his or her labour and service for a return. Therefore, the application for employment acts as a personal advertisement. Job application contains appeal for the job along with the job seeker’s personal data like name, address, qualification, and experience.

What do you mean by BioData? Bio data refers to a person’s life, experience and achievements. It should be representative of all your personal and professional details in a specified format. It is generally divided into four parts:

In the class 12 CBSE examination, choices will be given to attempt any one question out of the given two Long Answer Questions to be answered in 120-150 words. The questions will be based on Letter writing (Based on verbal / visual input). (6 Marks) Letter types include –

  • Business or official letters (for making enquiries, registering complaints, asking for and giving information, placing orders and sending replies)
  • Letters to the editor (giving suggestions or opinion on issues of public interest)
  • Application for a job

The breakup of 5 marks as per CBSE guidelines is as follows:-

Job application and Bio-data is crucial not only from the point of view of the examination but it is important in the long run also. While attempting the writing skills questions, it is pivotal that the student follows the correct format. And for that, we present before you the proper format to enable you to write the ideal job application letter along with the bio-data.

A job Application consists of two parts- the covering letter (appeal) and the bio-data/CV.

  • Cover letter

The format for the covering letter is similar to the format of a Formal letter. It goes on like-

SENDER’s ADDRESS – The sender’s address is usually put on the top left-hand corner.

DATE- The sender’s address is followed by the date just below it. This is the date on which the letter is being written. It is to be written in expanded form.

RECEIVER’s ADDRESS – Whether to write “To” above the address depends on the writer’s preference. Make sure you write the official title/name/position etc of the receiver, as the first line of the address.

SUBJECT- Then we sum up the purpose of writing the letter in one line. This helps the receiver focus on the subject of the letter in one glance. It is important to underline the subject.

SALUTATIONS- This is where you greet the person you are addressing the letter to. Bear in mind that it is a formal letter, so the greeting must be respectful and not too personal. The general greetings used in formal letters are “Sir” or “Madam”.

BODY – This is the main content of the letter. It is either divided into three paragraphs or two paragraphs if the letter is briefer. The tone of the content should be formal. Do not use any flowery language. Another point to keep in mind is that the letter should be concise and to the point. And always be respectful and considerate in your language.

  • PARAGRAPH 1 – Begin the body of the letter by mentioning the source (from where you got to know about the job) of information about the job (e.g., newspaper) along with the day, date and advertisement number. Also mention the post you wish to apply for.
  • PARAGRAPH 2- Here, you are supposed to offer your candidature by briefing about your qualifications, achievements, previous experiences and your strengths. In other words, this paragraph should be an answer to the question: ‘How are you the perfect candidate for the job?’.

Keep in mind that it should be to the point and clear. You should not sound boastful.

  • PARAGRAPH 3- In this part of the body, you are supposed to make a reference to the photograph (passport-sized), Bio-data or curriculum vitae and other detailed documents that you have enclosed. You can also appeal for a one-on-one interview.

End the body on a promising note, e.g., Looking forward to your positive response.

COMPLIMENTARY CLOSE- At the end of your letter, we write a complimentary closing. The words “Yours Faithfully” or “Yours Sincerely” are used.

SIGNATURE – Here finally you sign your name. And then write your name in block letters beneath the signature. This is how the recipient will know who is sending the letter.

(NOTE- Mention the name given in the question paper. Do not mention your personal details.)

After signing, you are supposed to mention the heading “ENCLOSURES” which will include the name of the documents and testimonials attached along with the cover letter. They may include the following-

  • Photograph (Passport-sized)
  • Bio-data or CV
  • Copies of certificates

Tips to attempt a question on Job application and biodata

Here are a few valuable tips for you to attempt the class 12 English writing skills – job application and biodata question in a better way-

  • Make sure you double check for grammatical accuracy and spellings. They carry marks.
  • Leave adequate number of lines between paragraphs to make it look clean.
  • Underlining the main points is very important. But it is advised to do it after finishing your exam. Use a pencil and scale for underlining.
  • Presentation is very important.
  • Read a lot of letters to get an idea.
  • Never mention any of your personal details, i.e., name, school name or address.
  • Never write in one go. Make sure you follow the right format and make paragraphs.
  • Don’t use slangs or short forms.
  • Try not to exceed the prescribed word limit of 120-150 words.

Conciseness is where most résumés quickly fail. Recruiters typically spend 10 seconds or less glancing at each résumé. As a recruiter, I would send résumés over to senior recruiters or hiring managers and get a response back in just a few minutes. A one-page document forces you to focus on the most relevant and impactful information.

By eliminating unnecessary details, you highlight your core qualifications and achievements. This makes it easier for recruiters to quickly assess your fit for the role, and increase your chances of moving onto the next round.

2. Add Your LinkedIn Profile At The Top

Include a link to your LinkedIn profile at the top of your résumé to provide recruiters with a quick way to learn more about you. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, includes a professional headshot, and aligns with your resume. A strong LinkedIn presence serves as an extension of your résumé.

Job seekers with long career histories make the mistake of listing every job they’ve ever had. This approach will more likely harm than help your résumé’s appeal to the readers.

Recruiters are most interested in your recent work experience, typically the last 10 years. Highlighting your most recent and relevant roles helps keep your résumé focused and relevant. It also lessens the odds of you getting discriminated against for your age. There’s no job description that will ask for 20 years of experience, and it’s unlikely your experience more than 10 years ago will translate well because of how fast technology has moved since then.

It’s better to spend the bulk of your limited space to highlight your most recent experience. If you have significant achievements from earlier in your career, consider summarizing them in your LinkedIn instead, or shortening the descriptions of the jobs beyond the past 10 years into a short summary.

5. Quantify Your Achievements With Shorter Bullets

When describing your responsibilities and achievements, use bullet points to keep information digestible — not entire paragraphs that you might find in a legal document. It’s more critical now to quantify your achievements wherever possible, such as “Increased sales by 30%” or “Managed a team of 5.” This approach not only grabs attention but also provides concrete evidence of your impact and will distinguish you from other candidates. Keeping these bullet points to no more than two lines ensures clarity and readability.

6. Employ More Impactful Action Words

The words you choose can significantly affect how your résumé is perceived. Swap out common words like “use” for more impactful verbs such as “utilize,” “leverage,” “implement” or “deploy.” Instead of “make,” try words like “produce,” “generate” and “create.” Strong action verbs convey a sense of proactivity and effectiveness, making your accomplishments sound more dynamic and specific. They also reduce reader fatigue from seeing similar bullets from multiple résumés.

7. Have A Career Coach Or Recruiter Proofread Your Résumé

Lastly, have a career coach or recruiter review your résumé. They provide valuable, objective insights from an industry perspective, ensuring your résumé meets current standards, trends and expectations. They can also catch errors you might have missed, or offer suggestions on bullets that seem unclear or confusing to them.

A great way to test this is to ask them to read the résumé for a minute, and then take the résumé away from them and see what they remember from seeing it. Even better is to have a career coach or recruiter do a mock interview with you using the résumé to see where you might have gaps to fill.

By following these seven steps, you can uplevel your résumé so it not only stands out to recruiters but also effectively communicates your qualifications. Keeping an updated résumé helps shorten your job search time and reduces your risk of staying unemployed for longer than you can afford.

College application resumes are different from professional resumes. There’s a certain way your resume for college applications should be to ensure your profile stands out. In one page, your resume will need to cover your academics, background, extracurricular activities and achievements. So to be asked to complete a resume, on top of everything else that goes into the college application? We know, it sounds like a lot. If you’re not sure where to start, you’ve come to the right place. Down below, we’ll dive right into what a college resume is and how to write a college resume. You’ll even find three college application resume examples and a college application resume template to help you start your own.

Let’s have a look at how to begin your resume for your college applications.

What goes into a college application resume?

A resume for your college application, otherwise known as your high school resume, should be one page long. It’s a space for you to show colleges all of your most important activities and achievements that they wouldn’t necessarily know in other parts of your college application. The overall objective of the college application resume is to demonstrate the bigger picture of who you are. It’s essentially a summary of what you’ve done, assembled in a way that serves as a snapshot of your greatest achievements.

There are a few core sections that will go into your college application resume:

– Contact information: Your full name, home address, email and phone number should be at the very top of your college application resume. The header of your resume should have all of this information. This includes any LinkedIn page or personal website that showcases your achievements. – Educational details and academic accomplishments: The full name of your high school and the dates of when you attended should go here. This is where you’ll include your GPA, your AP or IB courses, your ACT or SAT scores and your class ranking, if it’s significant.

Extracurricular activities and work experience: Any special volunteering, internships, part-time jobs, or even had a unique experience studying or working abroad? You should mention those moments here. This section of the resume will amplify what kind of person you are in the community around you. To better understand you as an applicant, admissions officers want to know where you spend your time outside of school. Did you have any leadership positions? Was there a special job or position you had? – Awards and honors: If you have any accomplishments that you’re proud of, you should list them here. This is the part of the college application resume to list achievements like your first prize in a district-wide writing competition or your Most Valuable Player award in your tennis team. Remember, both academic awards and extracurricular awards can be mentioned, so be sure to include any relevant recognitions. – Special skills and interests: Let’s say you speak more than one language and you’re passionate about all things student leadership. Perhaps you know everything about computers. This part of the college application resume is where you should list those unique skills. Think of strong skills and interests you possess, while making sure they reflect your overall college application profile and ambitions. If you have any particular interests or even hobbies that can strengthen your application, then go for it.

Putting together the resume for your college applications can be a tedious process, so it’s best to pay careful attention to every line. You’ll want to focus on the format , style of language , brief but concise descriptions and crucial details .

College Application Resume Styles

By looking at the resumes for college applications above, you’ll see that the three are quite different from each other. The first was a very simple college application resume example, while the second was a bit more informative, though not entirely. The third college application resume example provided more background information and relevant details. However, it’s always important to keep in mind that you’ll want your college application resume to be around one page.

The top general tips for writing your resume for college applications are:

1) Write your contact information and professional email address. Make sure your email address is something that colleges won’t have to think twice about.

2) Begin with education . Colleges know that you won’t have a lot of work experience. They’re academic institutions, so first and foremost, they’re interested in your academic performance. Start your college application resume with your education.

3) Bulleted lists over paragraphs. Elaborate on your achievements and experiences with brief descriptions in bullet points, not in lengthy paragraphs . Admissions officers will want to read clear and concise descriptions that are straight to the point.

4) Use strong action verbs that empower you. If you led a group of children at camp or presented your research in front of a committee, use an action verb that encapsulates your responsibilities. This means that instead of writing “It involved leading groups of children…” try something like “Directed groups of children to…”

5) One page does the trick. It’s tempting to want to make your resume as long and informative as possible. But the moment that happens, the quicker the reader will lose interest. College admissions offices are looking through thousands of applications. Keeping your college application resume concise will only work in your favor. Doing so is also a great exercise for future job applications and helps you decide what you really want to focus on sharing.

As seen from the examples above, you can personalize the style of your college application resume. But a general college application resume template will look like the following:
