If my birthday falls on a school day, I wear special clothes to school for the day because we are allowed to skip our uniform that day. I carry two bags of chocolates to share with all my classmates. Birthdays are always fun because the teachers and classmates treat me extra special. I like distributing chocolates to everyone in my class, and always give one extra to all my friends.

At home, we have the party planned out for the evening. By the time I return from school, my mother decorates the house and has the place all set for the party. All my friends arrive in the evening, and we cut the cake soon after. My mother makes delicious snacks for all of us, which we lap up happily. We also play many games and have the most fun time. In the end, it is time to open the presents. I start unwrapping all my gifts as soon as everyone leaves. This is my favourite part of the entire day, as I always have to wait to see what I might receive in every new box!

A Happy Birthday Party Makes Happy Kids-Writing Personal Narratives

For this birthday party personal narrative prompt, children have to write about an unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment at a birthday party.

To get a full understanding on how I conduct each writing lesson you may want to read the Writing Prompts Introduction post.  The birthday part personal narrative lesson outlined below (and all other prompts posted) will make more sense and be easier to follow and use.  Here’s the lined paper I use for Grades K-2  and  Grades 2-7

(The samples I give in the lesson outline below come from sample #2 above (when the dog stepped on a new toy.)

Tell the Story Line

Tell the storyline: “You’re at a birthday party doing something.  All of a sudden, an unusual, surprising, fun or funny thing happens.”

While kids LOVE to talk about birthday parties, I’ve noticed that it takes them some time to really think of a “moment” to write about.  After telling the story line, give your students plenty of time to think through their past and decide on a special birthday party moment to use in their writing.

Give them some examples to help them think as well.

I taught this lesson not too long ago to a small group of 5 students, ages 6-9.  Some of their surprise moments were:

• At a gym party, one girl fell off the parallel bars.
• At a friend’s party, the dog stepped on a new toy the boy had just received and broke it.
• An example I gave was when the folding table collapsed while I was cutting my father’s birthday cake!

Show the 5 Sections

• Introduction  (Time, Place, People)
• Before the moment
• Reaction/Action
• Conclusion (Thoughts for the future)

Remember:  K-1 st Graders are encouraged to write 1 sentence for each section, 2 nd Graders 2 sentences, 3 rd Graders 3 sentences and so on.

NOW TO WRITE!

Guide the students through the following steps so that their birthday party personal narrative is organized and complete.

• To begin writing, the students hook their reader by writing sounds that are heard at the party.

Crack! Pop!, Hee-Haw!, “Happy Birthday Jackson!”, Aggh!, etc.

• Write when, whose party, where and who was there.  Older students can elaborate and include the weather, time of day, month, season etc.

It was summer time.  It was my friend, Jackson’s birthday.  We were at his house.  There were 7 friends there.

• Describe what everyone was doing BEFORE the unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment.

Jackson had opened all of his presents before I got there.  When I got there, I was watching Jackson and his friend battling with tiny robots.  He had gotten the robots for his birthday. 

• Next, describe the unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment.

All of a sudden, Jackson’s dog came inside and stepped on one of the robots.  The robot BROKE!  It was brand new!

• Write what everyone did after the unusual, surprising, fun or funny moment.

We all grabbed a nerf gun and started shooting at the dog.  He started running away.  Jackson was mad.  I was mad too.

• Lastly, write any lessons that were learned or thoughts for the future.

If I ever have a dog at a party I’ll make sure he’s outside or tied up away from my new presents!

GAMES TO PLAY!

Memory match-sentences.

This sentence game was created to practice spelling words that are particularly hard for students such as friend, every, very, to name a few.

Use more difficult words for older students.

This writing activity can address the following Common Core State Standards:  CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.F, L.K.2, L.K.2.A, L.K.2.B, L.1.2, L.1.2.B, L.1.2.D, L.2.2, L.3.2, L.3.2.E, L.4.1.G, L.4.2, L.4.2.A, L.5.2, L.5.2.E, RF.K.3.C, RF.1.3.G, RF.2.3.F and RF.3.3.D.  It covers a lot!

Pairs of Memory Cards

You’ll first need cards from a standard  memory games .  I’ve picked up a couple games at garages sales and thrift stores for no more than a dollar.

Students like this game because it gets them moving around the room.

Here’s how to play!

• First, tell the student which focus word they’re going to use (i.e. VERY).
• Second, choose pairs of matching cards so that you have enough cards for each student.  Give each student one card.
• Third, tell the students that they can’t show anyone their card or tell what their card is.

4.  Fourth, students have to mill around the room using body language to describe their card.  They try to find the other student with the match to their card.

5.  Once the students have found their match, they sit down next to each other.

6.  After all pairs of students are seated, choose one pair to go to the whiteboard to write a sentence using the word on their card AND a specific word that you have chosen for them to work on (i.e. friend ).

Because of the time that it takes to mill around the room and match the cards, we usually only play 2-3 rounds of this game.

Each student in each pair writes a sentence to complete one round.  You can use the same focus word or a different word for the rounds 2 and 3.

The thought of being a year older is always surreal and exciting. I don’t normally like to have birthday parties, but my small surprise birthday party last year was unique and very special.

Some people wouldn’t really define it as a party, because I didn’t have lots of guests and I didn’t play party games. It was my first week at university, and to celebrate my birthday, my friends wished me at 12 AM and gave me plenty of hugs. We decided to watch a movie of my choice, so I chose a horror movie. We ate lots of food, chatted and listened to music, which made for a nice, small party.

Later in the day, I went to see my family, who surprised me with the prettiest birthday cake I’d ever seen. The edge of the cake was completely made of Kit Kat’s, and the top was sprinkled with M&Ms. I blew the candles, cut the cake and cheered as I opened birthday presents. I played around with my younger siblings and watched a movie with them.

I think the reason this birthday party of sorts is memorable for me is because it was my first week in a new place. I was very frightened and nervous, but spending time with friends and family because of my birthday helped me feel more comfortable.

A couple of weeks ago, I turned 27 years old. It was a nice birthday and we had a little party later in the week with some horror movies and light imbibing :). Whenever a birthday comes along it's easy to start comparing them to all of your previous birthdays. Which was the best, which was the worst, which was the craziest, that sort of thing. These free  creative writing prompts  about birthdays will help you to extract some of that information out of your brain. Who knows, this may cause you to have the start of a novel or screenplay that you can then finish by the time your next birthday rolls around :).  Free Creative Writing Prompts: Birthdays

1. What was your favorite birthday and why? Who was there? Did you have a party? What presents did you get? Be very specific about what made it so special.

2. What was your worst birthday and why? Be extremely detailed about what made it such an awful memory. As always, you can make it into a character's story and exaggerate all the details to an extreme degree.

3. Have you ever been to a birthday party that was so extravagant it actually made you somewhat jealous? If not, create a story in which a character goes to a birthday party that is completely out of his league. This especially includes the present that you got this person. Totally inadequate :).

4. How do you feel as though you will change with your upcoming birthday? Will your responsibilities change? Will your clock start ticking a little faster to do something that you've been meaning to do? Be specific and detailed.

5. Create your ideal birthday story for any age that you wish. You can re-make a birthday party or get together you've already had or plan out a new amazing celebration for the future. The important thing is to make it absolutely perfect in every possible way.

6. In a bit of magic, you get to relive each of your birthdays from the age of one all the way to now. How does it feel to be back in that high chair? What about playing party games a little bit down the road? Sitting with that middle school sweetheart you had at the time? What would you do differently and what would you make sure stayed the same?

7. Create a story in which the main character hates birthdays, and tries extremely hard to avoid telling people that today is his special day. And it happens to be the best day of his life. Elaborate to the extreme.

8. Talk about your best birthday cake experience, yours or someone elses. Did you put your face in one? Did you eat five to ten pieces of one? Have fun with this one and really flesh everything out. Mmm, frosting.

9. Write a story about throwing a birthday party for someone. Whether it be for a family member or a significant other. How did it go? Did the person enjoy him or herself?

10. What is the best present that you've ever gotten for your birthday? Not necessarily the most expensive, but the one that was the most important to you. Sight Balloons, streamers, party hats, confetti, brightly-wrapped presents, envelopes, gift bags, theme-based paper products and table cloths, banners, birthday cake, cookies and brownies, a bounce house, water/sprinkler toys (for an outdoor party), party games…

Sounds Doorbell ringing, kids laughing/yelling, parents talking, doors slamming, pounding feet, shrill noisemakers and whistles, blaring music, TV noise, shrieks from outside, kids arguing over toys/games, voices singing Happy Birthday To You, candles being blown out…

Smells Cake and cookies baking, just-cleaned floors, scented candles or air freshener, other specific house smells (cigarette smoke, dog or cat, potpourri, etc.)…

Tastes Sweet icing, moist or dry birthday cake, other desserts, salty chips, candy from gift bags, ice cream, waxy drink cups, juice, water, soda…

Touch Breeze from open door and windows, cold blast of the a/c or heat from heater, hard plastic dishware, a cake server sinking into an untouched cake, sticky icing, cool drinks, cake crumbs, soft melting ice cream, rubbery balloons, scattered paper feel of confetti, the too-tight elastic party hat band…

Helpful hints:

–The words you choose can convey atmosphere and mood.

Example 1: Lightning forked the sky, sending wet kids scrambling out of the pool and into the house. Thunder boomed and the girls screamed, throwing water every which way. The streamers sagged. Crumpled tissue paper turned to a sodden, toilet-papery mess. Water pooled in half-a-dozen places on my hard-wood floor. I racked my brain for a way to salvage Annie’s party while she stared into the lowering sky, her palms pressed to the window. A single drop of water trickled from each hand and ran down the glass like tears…

–Similes and metaphors create strong imagery when used sparingly.

Example 1: (Simile) The party had been perfect, like something from the Hallmark Channel…

Love this… Not technically a place in your usual sense but if you ever run out of places (yeah right!) I’m hoping you’ll consider something along the lines of transportation… inside a car etc. Something I’ve always had trouble with… only so many things can go whizzing by before you admit you need help =)

My daughter is having her birthday party tomorrow. One thing I’ve noticed is there’s a competition as to who can have their party at the coolest location, with the coolest activity. I don’t think it is consciously planned by the kids. Probably a parent thing.

We have pets from the local petstore visiting us. Some parties have been held are art studios. Others at centers with organizated sports and physical activities. So even these things can add different dynamics to the story and take it out of the ordinary birthday party setting.
