Custody starring Naga Chaitanya, is all set to arrive in theatres on 12th May. The film, directed by Venkat Prabhu, has Krithi Shetty as the female lead, while Maestro Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the tunes. Arvind Swami plays the baddie. Srinivasaa Chitturi produced the film, which also has Priyamani, Sarath Kumar, Sampath Raj, Premji, Vennela Kishore, and Premi Vishwanath in key roles. Ahead of the release, we had a brief interaction with the film’s producer, and here is the transcript.

As a producer, which aspect impressed you in Custody?

The story and screenplay of Custody impressed me a lot. The movie has the emotions and entertainment that will attract Telugu audiences. Though the plot will be serious, there will be sufficient quotient of entertainment. I liked the way the director mixed both these elements. Custody will give the feel of a Hollywood film loaded with Telugu emotions.

What made you not opt for PAN India release?

From the very beginning, we planned it as a bilingual film. Though it is bilingual, we took extreme care for the Telugu and Tamil versions. It was like making two films. There will be a Hindi release at a later date.

Will you produce films keeping in mind the heroes’ market? Or will you spend according to the story?

When I made U-Turn with Samantha, none knew what her market was. I did it as I liked the story. I spent as per the requirements of the story. Also, Seetimaarr and The Warriorr are the most expensive films in Gopichand and Ram Pothineni’s careers. The same is the case with Custody. I didn’t have any calculations and spent what was required for the story. I am happy with the content and the film’s business.

After watching the output, what’s your feeling about the film?

Custody will be the highest-grosser in Naga Chaitanya’s career. Custody will remain a special film for Chaitanya, just like Siva in Nagarjuna Garu’s career. Every character in the movie will be unique.

Could you brief us about Arvind Swamy, Sarath Kumar, and Priyamani’s characters?

After listening to the script, Arvind Swami Garu gave his nod without any second thought. His character will be both terrific and entertaining. Arvind Swami Garu is sure to amuse the audience. Sarath Kumar Garu’s character will also be very powerful. Naga Chaitanya has to take on these two giant forces. Priyamani will be seen as Chief Minister.

Will there be a comedy track in Custody?

There won’t be tracks as such. There won’t be characters that have no importance. Even the heroine is not meant just for songs. There will be an interlink between each scene. Every character will have its own importance.

Could you tell us about your future projects?

There will be a sequel to Custody. I am saying this as I believe in the film. Ram – Boyapati’s movie is in the production stage, and we will release a teaser on Ram’s birthday. The movie with Nagarjuna will have its shoot in June. We will let you know the details soon. I will produce another film with Naga Chaitanya.

శివ (నాగచైతన్య) అనే సిన్సియర్ కానిష్టేబుల్ కి, ఒక సీబీయై ఆఫీసర్ (సంపత్) కి, సీఎం అండతో బతికే ఒక రౌడీషీటర్ (అరవింద్ స్వామి) కి, ఒక రౌడీ పోలీసాఫీసర్ (శరత్ కుమార్) కి మధ్యన జరిగే కథ ఇది. శివకి ఒక లవర్ (కృతిశెట్టి). ఆమెకి మరొకడితో (వెన్నెల కిషోర్) తో నిశ్చితార్ధం అవుతుంది. మన హీరో ఆమెను ఎలా దక్కించుకుంటాడు? ఇదొక ట్రాక్.

ఈ సినిమాలో హుక్ పాయింట్ ఏంటంటే సీబీయై ఆఫీసర్ రౌడీ షీటర్ ని ఎందుకు తరుముతున్నాడు? సీఎం కి ఆ రౌడీషీటర్ ఎఫైర్ ఏమిటి? క్లైమాక్స్ లో వీటికి జవాబు దొరుకుతుంది. 

సాధారణంగా కాప్ స్టోరీస్ అంటే ఎస్సైయ్యో, కొత్తగా రిక్రూట్ అయిన ఐపీఎస్ ఆఫీసరో హీరోగా కనిపిస్తాడు. కానిస్టేబుల్ ప్రధానపాత్రలో కథలు చాలా అరుదు. ఈ మధ్యన కిరణ్ అబ్బవరం కానిస్టేబుల్ పాత్రలో ఒక సినిమాలో కనిపించినా పెద్దగా ఆడలేదు. నాగచైతన్య లాంటి నటుడు ఒక సీరియస్ కాప్ స్టోరీలో కానిస్టేబుల్ గా కనిపిస్తున్నప్పుడు అంత కన్విన్సింగ్ యాక్షన్ డ్రామా ఏముంటుందా అనిపిస్తుంది!

నిజజీవితంలో కానిస్టేబుల్ పవర్స్ ఎంతవరకు ఉంటాయో, ఎస్సైల నీడలో వాళ్లు వృత్తిని ఎలా నిర్వర్తిస్తూ ఉంటారో చూస్తుంటాం. మరి అంత ఛాలెంజింగ్ గా అనిపించే పాత్రతో కూడిన కథ కన్విన్సింగ్ గా ఉందా అంటే అస్సలు లేదని చెప్పాలి. చిన్న చిన్న పాత్రలకి కూడా పెద్ద పెద్ద నటుల్ని తీసుకుని అత్యంత పేలవంగా తీసిన సినిమా ఇది. క్రైం థ్రిల్లర్స్, యాక్షన్ డ్రామాలు జనం చాలానే చూస్తున్నారు. ఎంతో బలమైన స్క్రీన్ ప్లే తో, బరువైన కథతో, షాకింగ్ గా అనిపించే రివీలింగ్ పాయింట్స్ తో గొప్ప చిత్రాలొస్తున్నాయి. వాటి దరిదారుపుల్లోకి ఏమాత్రం రాకుండా ముప్పై ఏళ్ల క్రితం తీసినా కూడా ఔట్ డేటెడ్ అనిపించేలా ఎక్కడా ఆసక్తికరమైన పాయింట్ లేకుండా తీసిన సినిమా ఇది. 

ప్రధమార్ధం పాత్రల పరిచయాలతో కొనసాగి నసగుతూ, నీల్గుతూ ఉంటుంది. అరవింద్ స్వామి పాత్ర ఎంటరయ్యక ఏదో కథ మొదలయ్యిందన్న ఫీలింగొస్తుంది. కానీ మళ్లీ విసుగు కొనసాగి పేలవమైన ఇంటర్వల్ బ్యాంగ్ అవుతుంది. 

ద్వితీయార్ధంలో అధికభాగం యాక్షన్ సీన్లే. 

క్లైమాక్స్ చాలా ప్రెడిక్టిబుల్ గా ఉండడమే కాకుండా ఎమెచ్యురిష్ గా ముగిసింది. 

టెక్నికల్ గా యాక్షన్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ చిత్రీకరణ బాగుంది. సింగిల్ షాట్ ఫైట్ సీక్వెన్స్ ఇంకా బాగుంది. బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ కాస్త భిన్నంగా ఉండి అక్కడక్కడ ఓకే అనిపించినా ఎక్కువశాతం నీరసపరిచింది.

కెమెరా వర్క్ బాగున్నా ఎడిటింగ్ పదును లేకుండా ఉంది. మళ్లీ మళ్లీ ఒకే తరహా సీన్స్ రావడం రిపీటెడ్ అనిపించింది. 

పాటల్లోని సంగీత సాహిత్యాలు దారుణంగా ఉన్నాయి. యువన్ శంకర్, ఇళయరాజా- ఒకరు కాదు ఇద్దరు ఉద్దండ సంగీత దర్శకులు. కానీ ఔట్పుట్ దయనీయం. సాహిత్యం మరీ బి-గ్రేడ్ అరవ డబ్బింగు సినిమా పాటల్ని పోలి ఉన్నాయి. ఎవరు రాసారా అని చూస్తే రామజోగయ్య. ఈ లెక్కన ఈ సినిమాపట్ల అన్ని విభాగాల్లోనూ పేరున్న వాళ్లునా శ్రద్ధగా పని చేయలేదనో, దర్శకుడు చేయించుకోలేదనో అనిపిస్తుంది. 

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే నాగచైతన్య సీరియస్ క్యారెక్టరైజేషన్లో అక్కడక్కడ ఓకే అనిపించాడు. వీక్ రైటింగ్ వల్ల అతని హీరోయిజం పెద్దగా రిజిస్టర్ కాలేదు. 

కృతిశెట్టి పక్కింటమ్మాయి టైపులో సింపుల్ గా పాత్రకి తగ్గట్టుగా ఉంది. మరొక కథానాయిక ఆనంది ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్ లో అతిధి పాత్ర టైపులో కనిపిస్తుంది. 

అరవింద్ స్వామి కి బిల్డప్ బానే ఇచ్చారు కానీ దానికి తగిన క్యారెక్టర్ డెప్త్ లేదు. అయినప్పటికీ ఉన్నంతలో ఈ పాత్రే చివరిదాకా ఉండి క్లైమాక్స్ లో ట్విస్ట్ ఇస్తుంది. 

శరత్ కుమార్ విలనీ బానే ఉంది. ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా కనిపించిన ప్రియమణికి బిల్డప్ షాట్స్ ఫుల్, పవర్ఫుల్ డైలాగ్స్ నిల్ అన్నట్టుగా రాసుకున్నారు. 

రాంకీ, జయసుధ..ఇలా ప్రతి చిన్న సీన్లోనూ పెద్ద పెద్ద నటుల్ని, మాజీ హీరోలని, అలనాటి హీరోయిన్ ని వాడేయడం జరిగింది. 

అత్యంత బలహీనమైన రచనకి ఈ సినిమా ఒక ఉదాహరణ. కథ, కథనం, డైలాగ్ ఇలా ఏ విభాగంలోనూ కూడా బలం లేకుండా తీయడం ఈ చిత్ర దర్శకుడికే చెల్లింది. 

అయినా కృతిశెట్టి "కష్టడీ" సినిమాకి ప్రచారంచేస్తూ తాను నటించిన సినిమాల్లో తనని బాగా కదిలించిన సినిమాలు ఇప్పటి వరకు "బంగార్రాజు", "శ్యాం సింగరాయ" మాత్రమేనని చెప్పినప్పుడే అర్ధం చేసుకుని ఉండాల్సింది.

"నిజం గెలవడానికి లేట్ అవుతుంది కానీ కచ్చితంగా గెలుస్తుంది" అని ఇందులో ఒక డైలాగుంది. "నిజం గెలవడానికి" ప్లేసులో "హిట్టు కొట్టడానికి" అని పెట్టుకుని ఆ వాక్యాన్ని జపించుకుంటూ మరొక ప్రయత్నం చెయడమే నాగచైతన్య చేయగలిగేది. ఈ కష్టడి చూసినవాళ్లని బాగా కష్టపెట్టింది.

Custody review: A competent cop drama that keeps the viewers invested in spite of its shortcomings

Venkat Prabhu’s latest directorial takes time to find its feet but eventually gets better as the plot becomes thicker.

Cop dramas usually have a superhero cop who takes on an army of villains and vigilante justice is delivered.  Venkat Prabhu’s Custody belongs to a slightly different space.

Here, Naga Chaitanya’s Shiva has the duty of protecting a goonda (criminal) and making sure that he is produced before the court, without any harm.

Another factor that makes Custody different from other movies of the same genre is the fact that Shiva is a constable, not a higher official. There is an underdog quality about him that makes him endearing.

The movie is set in the 1990s. Its opening shot is a terrible incident where 40 people die in a small town due to a gas cylinder blast. After that, we cut to the constable Shiva.

Shiva is someone who believes that human life is more important than anything else. This is wonderfully established when he rushes to stop the convoy of the Chief Minister (Priya Mani) so that an ambulance can pass.

Revathi (Krithi Shetty) is Shiva’s love interest. They both have a steady relationship for a while but there are some serious obstacles from her parents’ side.

Things take a turn with a car accident when Shiva is on the way to her house to save her from a forced marriage.

After the accident, two men are seen fighting – one is Raju (Aravind Swami) and the other is a CBI official George (Sampath Raj). Shiva ends up arresting both.

On reaching the police station, Shiva learns the true identity of Raju, a well-connected goonda with political backing. He needs to be produced at the Bangalore court in the next 24 hours to testify against some influential people.

Meanwhile, there is an assassination attempt to kill Raju before he reaches court. Shiva makes sure that the assassination attempt is not successful.

He and George escape from the police station with Raju. But IG Natraj (Sarathkumar) is hell-bent on making sure that Raju doesn’t reach the Bangalore court.

Adding to the mayhem, Revathi escapes from her house by making her prospective groom (Vennela Kishore) a bakra .

The rest of the story deals with whether Shiva is successful or not in producing Raju before the court and what happens to him and Revathi later.

Shortcomings & best moments

Custody begins engagingly. As viewers, we instantly connect with Shiva’s honesty and want him to succeed in whatever he does.

But things go haywire with the addition of the love story and also an irritating comedy track featuring Vennala Kishore.

The songs also come as major speed breakers, which is surprising, given that it is the first time that the father-son duo of Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvun Shankar Raja have worked together.

It is a step down from Ilaiyaraaja after a soulful soundtrack in Krishna Vamsi’s Rangamarthanda (2023).

Nevertheless, the plot becomes more engaging with the entry of Aravind Swami. The action set piece in the police station is wonderfully staged. Here, it has to be mentioned that, the background score is much better than the songs.

The cat-and-mouse chase involving Natraj, Raju and Shiva gives the film some of its best moments.

Another action stretch that deserves a mention is the pre-interval block involving an underwater sequence.

We see an unlikely bond developing between Shiva and Raju through the journey. This has been well-etched by Venkat Prabhu.

Impressive show by actors

Aravind Swami does a wonderful job in making sure that Raju, despite being a goonda, comes across as endearing. He also brings in some dry humour that raises many chuckles.

Much like in Sekhar Kammula’s Love Story (2021), here too, Naga Chaitanya plays an underdog and delivers a wonderful performance.

He does justice to the arc of the character which goes from a happy-go-lucky guy in the flashback to a determined young man in the present.

Krithi Shetty alternates between a typically chirpy heroine and a serious woman. She does it quite well in spite of the romantic track coming across as a hurdle.

Sarathkumar as Natraj makes for a formidable opposition.

Custody (2023) Movie: What's Behind

Naga Chaitanya-Venkat Prabhu's Custody is capturing the attention of all as they are coming together for the first time. The film is a bilingual entertainer released even in other languages. The film's teaser and trailer got good responses and is releasing on 12 May 2023. The film's OTT streaming rights are yet to be finalised and date will be announced after the end of its theatrical run. 

Custody (2023) Telugu Movie: Story Review

Custody story is about an honest police constable who fights all odds to bring arrest a dreaded gangster and punish him according to the law. Shiva (Naga Chaitanya) is an honest police officer in Rajamundry and how his life changes drastically when he comes into contact with the dreaded gangster Raju aka Razu(Arvind Swamy).

What are the repercussions and how CM Dakshayani (Priyamani),  CBI Officer ( Sampath Raj), police officer Nataraj ( Sarath Kumar), driving school instructor Revathi (Krthi Shetty), his father (Goparaju Ramana) are connected to it from the crux of the story?

Custody Movie: Artists Review

Naga Chaitanya worked hard for his role. He put in lot of effort but everything went for a toss due to the poor content. He even tonee down his usual antics and changed his look for the role of the cop. Krithi Shetty is ok in her role that is inconsequential . Arvind Swamy is good in the role of a dreaded gangster. He tried to elevate the scenes with his performance but his role didn't offer much scope. Priyamani is ok in the role of chief minister. She showed good emotions as a arrogant CM. R.Sarathkumar, Sampath Raj played key roles in typical manner. Vennela Kishor irritates with his comedy. Ramki, YG.Mahendran, Ravi Prakash, Goparaju Venkataramana are ok in their roles.

Custody Movie: Technicians Review

Custody story selected by Venkat Prabhu is all about an honest officer and how he braved all odds and took risks for the society. Many such films came earlier but Venkat Prabhu decided to go with it and elevate the heroism of Naga Chaitanya to the new level. But alas, right from the start till the finish Venkat Prabhu much to the shock of all failed on all fronts.

Everything turned out to be routine and he spent the entire first half highlighting the romantic angle of the honest cop. Only ahead of the interval, the antagonist is introduced and people expect things to change in the second half. 

But the second half is loaded with action and chase sequences which after a point of time turned out to be illogical and silly and this disappoints all the fans and movie lovers. Finally, when the film ends, people heave a sigh of relief. Venkat Prabhu failed on all fronts be it story, screenplay, and direction. The script turned out to be the biggest drawback.

Ilayaraja and Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is just ok. The songs acted as speed brakers to the already spineless narration. Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score turned out to be below average. The editing of Venkat Raajen left a lot to be desired. There are many drags that slowed the pace of the narration but he cannot be blamed as the story is outdated to the core. SR. Kathir's cinematography is ok. The dialogues of Abburi Ravi are just average. Production values of Srinivasaa Silver Screen are ok.

Custody Movie: Rating Analysis

Altogether, Custody turned out to be an outdated story. Expectations soared as Naga Chaitanya teamed with Venkat Prabhu who earlier created a sensation with a thriller like Manaadu. Naga Chaitanya cannot be criticized but Venkat Prabhu failed to repose the confidence shown in him by Naga Chaitanya.

Venkat Prabhu failed in all the crafts and no amount of fine-tuning would have helped the project. The film is another example of how not to make a project. The top of it, the Tamil flavor makes viewers find it difficult to digest. This proved that associating with big names alone will not guarantee success and only strong story and content turn out tobe the king at the box office. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2.25 Rating for Custody .

జయాపజయాలతో సంబంధం లేకుండా ఏడాదికి ఒకట్రెండు సినిమాలతో ప్రేక్షకులను పలకరిస్తుంటారు అక్కినేని నట వారసుడు నాగచైతన్య. గతేడాది ఆయన నటించిన ‘థాంక్యూ’, ‘లాల్‌ సింగ్‌ చడ్డా’ బాక్సాఫీస్‌ వద్ద మెప్పించలేకపోయాయి. దీంతో ఈసారి తమిళ దర్శకుడితో కలిసి ద్విభాషా చిత్రంతో ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చారు. వైవిధ్య కథలతో ప్రేక్షకులను అలరించే వెంకట్‌ ప్రభు తెరకెక్కించిన ‘కస్టడీ’ ఎలా ఉంది? పోలీస్‌ కానిస్టేబుల్‌ శివగా నాగచైతన్య ఎలా నటించారు?(custody movie review) ఇంతకీ ఈ ‘కస్టడీ’ కథ ఏంటి?

కథేంటంటే: ఎ.శివ (నాగచైతన్య) నిజాయతీ గల పోలీస్‌ కానిస్టేబుల్‌. సఖినేటిపల్లి పోలీస్‌స్టేషన్‌లో విధులు నిర్వర్తిసుంటాడు. తనకు రేవతి (కృతి శెట్టి) అంటే ఎంతో ప్రాణం. స్కూల్లో చదువుకునే రోజుల నుంచే ఆమెను ప్రేమిస్తుంటాడు. ఆ ప్రేమను పెళ్లి పీటలు ఎక్కిద్దామనుకుంటే కులాలు వేరు కావడంతో ఆమె తండ్రి అడ్డు చెబుతాడు. రేవతికి బలవంతంగా ప్రేమ్‌ (వెన్నెల కిషోర్‌)తో పెళ్లి నిశ్చయం చేస్తాడు. దీంతో ఆమె శివతో వెళ్లిపోవడానికి సిద్ధపడుతుంది. ఆమె కోసమే శివ వాళ్లింటికి వెళ్తుంటే దారిలో అనుకోకుండా ఓ కారు ఢీకొడుతుంది. అందులో కరుడుగట్టిన నేరస్థుడు రాజు (అరవింద్‌ స్వామి), సీబీఐ అధికారి జార్జ్‌ (సంపత్‌ రాజ్‌) గొడవ పడుతుంటారు. వాళ్లను డ్రంక్‌ అండ్‌ డ్రైవ్‌ కేసులో అరెస్టు చేసి స్టేషన్‌లో పెడతాడు శివ. అయితే ముఖ్యమంత్రి దాక్షాయని (ప్రియమణి) ఆదేశం ప్రకారం స్టేషన్‌లో ఉన్న రాజును చంపేందుకు పోలీస్‌ కమిషనర్‌ నటరాజన్‌ (శరత్‌ కుమార్‌) రంగంలోకి దిగుతాడు. తన పోలీస్‌ బలగాన్ని.. మరికొందరు రౌడీ మూకను జత చేసుకొని రాజు ఉన్న పోలీస్‌ స్టేషన్‌కు చేరుకుంటాడు. మరి ఆ తర్వాత ఏమైంది? రాజును చంపాలని ముఖ్యమంత్రి ఎందుకు ఆదేశించింది? అతన్ని పోలీస్‌స్టేషన్‌ నుంచి ప్రాణాలతో రక్షించిన శివ బెంగళూరుకు ఎందుకు తీసుకెళ్లాలనుకుంటాడు? (custody movie review) ఈ ప్రయాణంలో వాళ్లకు ఎదురైన సవాళ్లేంటి? శివకు రాజుకు ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి? రేవతి - శివల ప్రేమ కథ ఏమైంది? అన్నది తెరపై చూసి తెలుసుకోవాలి.

ఎలా ఉందంటే: ఇదొక విభిన్నమైన యాక్షన్‌ థ్రిల్లర్‌. ప్రతినాయకుడ్ని ప్రాణాలతో కాపాడుకుంటూ.. అడ్డొచ్చిన పోలీస్‌ వ్యవస్థకు ఎదురొడ్డి పోరాడుతూ.. ఓ సాధారణ కానిస్టేబుల్‌ చేసే అసాధారణ ప్రయాణమే ఈ చిత్ర కథాంశం. (custody movie review) దీంట్లో ఓ చిన్న ప్రేమకథను.. కాస్త ఫ్యామిలీ సెంటిమెంట్‌ను.. అక్కడక్కడా ఇంకాస్త వినోదాన్ని మేళవించి ఓ పక్కా కమర్షియల్‌ యాక్షన్‌ ఎంటర్‌టైనర్‌గా ‘కస్టడీ’ని తెరపై వడ్డించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు దర్శకుడు వెంకట్‌ ప్రభు. నిజానికి ఇలాంటి సీరియస్‌ కథల్లో ప్రేమకథలకు అంత స్కోప్‌ కనిపించదు. భిన్న ధ్రువాలైన ఈ రెండు అంశాల్ని ఒకే ఒరలో బలవంతంగా ఇరికించే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తే మొత్తం వంటకమే చెడిపోయే ప్రమాదం ఉంటుంది. కానీ, దర్శకుడు కొత్తగా ఈ రెండు అంశాల్ని ఆద్యంతం సమాంతరం నడిపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు. ఇదే ఈ చిత్రపై కాస్త ప్రతికూల ప్రభావం చూపింది. చిత్ర బృందం ప్రచార కార్యక్రమాల్లో చెప్పినట్లు సినిమా తొలి 20 నిమిషాలు చాలా సాధారణంగా సాగిపోతుంది. ఓ బాంబు పేలుడు సన్నివేశంతో సినిమాని మొదలు పెట్టిన తీరు ఆసక్తిరేకెత్తిస్తుంది. (custody movie review) అంబులెన్సుకు దారిచ్చే క్రమంలో సీఎం కాన్వాయ్‌ను శివ అడ్డుకోవడం.. దాంతో అతను వార్తల్లో వ్యక్తిగా నిలవడం.. పోలీస్‌ స్టేషన్‌లో పై అధికారి తనని అవమానించడం.. ఇలా కథ నెమ్మదిగా ముందుకు సాగుతుంది. ఇక శివ - రేవతిల లవ్‌ ట్రాక్‌ మొదలయ్యాక కథ వేగం పూర్తిగా మందగిస్తుంది.

ఎప్పుడైతే రాజు పాత్ర తెరపైకి వస్తుందో అక్కడి నుంచి కథ పూర్తిగా యాక్షన్‌ కోణంలోకి టర్న్‌ తీసుకుంటుంది. అతడిని శివ డ్రంక్‌ అండ్‌ డ్రైవ్‌ కేసులో అరెస్ట్‌ చేయడం.. అదే సమయంలో రాజును స్టేషన్‌లోనే హత్య చేసేందుకు పోలీస్‌ కమిషనర్‌ నటరాజన్‌ తన బలగంతో రంగంలోకి దిగడం.. శివ వాళ్లతో తలపడి రాజును స్టేషన్‌ నుంచి తప్పించడం.. ఇలా కథ రేసీగా ముందుకు సాగుతుంది. అయితే అంత వేగంగా పరుగులు తీస్తున్న కథకు ప్రతిసారీ లవ్‌ట్రాక్, అనవసరమైన పాటలు స్పీడ్‌ బ్రేకర్లులా అడ్డుతగులుతుంటాయి. ఓ అదిరిపోయే అండర్‌ వాటర్‌ యాక్షన్‌ సీక్వెన్స్‌తో విరామమిచ్చిన తీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. ప్రథమార్ధం వరకు ఫర్వాలేదనట్లుగా సాగిన సినిమా.. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో పూర్తిగా గాడి తప్పింది. (custody movie review) రాజును కాపాడుకుంటూ శివ పోలీసులతో చేసే ప్రతి యాక్షన్‌ సీక్వెన్స్‌ ఆకట్టుకునేలాగే ఉంటుంది. అయితే మధ్యలో వచ్చే శివ ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్‌ ఎపిసోడ్‌ మరీ రొటీన్‌గా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఇక అక్కడి నుంచి సినిమా ఓ సాధారణ ప్రతీకార కథలా మారిపోతుంది. మధ్యలో ‘సింధూర పువ్వు’ రాంకీ చేసే ఓ యాక్షన్‌ ఎపిసోడ్‌ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. పతాక సన్నివేశాలు ఊహలకు తగ్గట్లుగా ఉంటాయి. ఈ క్రమంలో వచ్చే సుదీర్ఘమైన ట్రైన్‌ యాక్షన్‌ సీక్వెన్స్‌ అక్కడక్కడా మెప్పిస్తుంది. ఓ చిన్న కోర్టు రూం డ్రామాతో సినిమా పేలవంగా ముగుస్తుంది.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: ఓ సామాన్య కానిస్టేబుల్‌గా శివ పాత్రలో నాగచైతన్య చాలా సెటిల్డ్‌గా నటించాడు. యాక్షన్‌ సన్నివేశాల కోసం చాలా కష్టపడ్డాడు. కృతిశెట్టి పాత్ర కథలో ఆద్యంతం కనిపిస్తుంది. నటన పరంగా కొత్తగా ఆమె చేసిందేమీ లేదు కానీ, ఈసారి అక్కడక్కడా ఆమెను యాక్షన్‌ కోణంలో చూపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు దర్శకుడు. (custody movie review) అరవింద్‌ స్వామి, శరత్‌ కుమార్‌ల పాత్రలు కథకు ప్రధాన ఆకర్షణగా నిలుస్తాయి. వాళ్లిద్దరూ తెరపై కనిపించినప్పుడల్లా సినిమాలో కొత్త ఊపు కనిపిస్తుంటుంది. అతిథి పాత్రలో రాంకీ కనిపించింది కొద్దిసేపే అయినా అది ప్రేక్షకులకు మంచి జోష్‌ ఇస్తుంది. చైతూ అన్నగా జీవా కూడా సినిమాలో కాసేపు తళుక్కున మెరుస్తారు. కానీ, ఆ పాత్ర మరీ రొటీన్‌గానే ఉంటుంది. సంపత్‌ రాజ్, జయప్రకాష్, ప్రియమణి, వెన్నెల కిషోర్‌ తదితరుల పాత్రలు పరిధి మేరకు ఉంటాయి. వెంకట్‌ ప్రభు కథలు ఎంత విభిన్నంగా ఉంటాయో.. స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే అంత కొత్తగా రేసీగా ఉంటుంది. కానీ, ఈ చిత్ర విషయంలో అనవసరంగా ప్రేమకథను ఇరికించి ఓ భిన్నమైన కథను దెబ్బ తీశారు. (custody movie review) అసలీ కథలో లవ్‌ ట్రాక్‌ లేకున్నా సినిమాకు వచ్చే నష్టమేమీ లేదు. శివ-రేవతిల ప్రేమకథలోనూ.. శివ ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్‌ ఎపిసోడ్‌లోనూ అంత ఫీల్‌ కనిపించదు. యాక్షన్‌ ఎపిసోడ్‌లను డిజైన్‌ చేసిన విధానం బాగుంది. ఇళయరాజా, యువన్‌ శంకర్‌ రాజా అందించిన పాటలు ఒక్కటీ గుర్తుంచుకునేలా లేవు. చాలా పాటల్లో తమిళ వాసన కనిపిస్తుంది. నేపథ్య సంగీతం ఫర్వాలేదనిపిస్తుంది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

Naga Chaitanya, who has been trying to establish himself as an action hero since his debut, is back with an action movie “Custody”. Let’s see if he has finally scored a hit or not.

Custody” follows the story of Shiva, a young and honest constable played by Naga Chaitanya, who gets caught up in a conflict between the CBI and the Mafia. Along with the CBI officer played by Sampath, a hitman named Raju played by Arvind Swamy, and a corrupt police officer played by R. Sharat Kumar, Shiva is compelled to follow them. The remainder of the plot focuses on the reasons why both groups are pursuing Mr. Raju and how the chase plays out.

Directed by Venkat Prabhu, “Custody” failed to meet the high expectations set by the director’s past successful films. The story, set in 1996 and revolving around a bomb blast that killed 40 people, fails to impress. The introduction of the protagonist and his love interest falls flat, and the attempted comedy fails to land. It’s not until the characters of Raju, the CBI officer, and Sarath Kumar enter the scene that the film starts to pick up some pace. However, the low-budget chasing sequences fail to leave any impact.

The film’s second half begins with the backstory of Shiva’s family, but it fails to add any significant value to the plot. The film seems to drag on with the rogue cops chasing Raju. The film’s technical aspects are also lacking, with poor background score and bad songs. The film’s biggest drawback is its patchy production values. Although the casting is impressive with many reputed artists, the weak script mars their performances. The film lacks entertainment value and even fails to deliver adequate action. At some point, the film feels like a Tamil film with a few Telugu actors. Venkat Prabhu failed to deliver a cohesive product, missing his signature flavor in this bilingual attempt.

The performances of Naga Chaitanya are commendable, but the characterization and getup of Aravind Swamy are irritating. Krithi Shetty is adequate in her role, while Priyamani, Sampath, and R. Sarathkumar play the other main characters with average performances.

“Custody” is a disappointing watch that requires a lot of patience to sit through. Despite the impressive cast, the movie fails to deliver even average content. The repetitive chase sequences involving the same trio of characters become tedious, and the flashback family story is nothing new. The movie feels more like a Tamil film, with only a few Telugu actors present. In terms of technical aspects, all crafts, including background score, songs, and production values, fail to impress. Overall, “Custody” fails to live up to its expectations and is not recommended.

ఈ మధ్య అక్కినేని హీరోలకు వరస ఫ్లాపులు వస్తున్నాయి. దాంతో ఈ సారి వచ్చే సినిమా కచ్చితంగా హిట్ కొట్టేలా ఉండాలి కానీ మామూలుగా కాదు అని గట్టి నమ్మకంతో కస్టడీ సినిమాతో వచ్చేసారు నాగ చైతన్య అక్కినేని. వెంకట్ ప్రభు దీనికి దర్శకుడు కావడంతో అంచనాలు మరింత పెరిగాయి. మరి ఈ చిత్రం నిజంగానే ప్రేక్షకుల మెప్పు పొందుతుందా..? అసలు సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది..? పూర్తి రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం..

శివ (నాగ చైతన్య) ఒక సిన్సియర్ కానిస్టేబుల్. డ్యూటీ కోసం ప్రాణాలు కూడా లెక్కచేయని తనం ఆయనది. ఏం చేయడానికైనా సిద్ధంగా ఉంటాడు. అతడికి డ్యూటీ ఎంత ప్రాణమో.. రేవతి (కృతి శెట్టి) కూడా అంతే ప్రాణం. కానీ కులాలు వేరు కావడంతో రేవతి ఇంట్లో శివతో పెళ్లికి ఒప్పుకోరు పెద్దలు. ఈ ప్రేమకథ ఇలా సాగుతుండగానే.. కొన్ని అనుకోని పరిణామాలు చోటు చేసుకుంటాయి శివ జీవితంలో. అతడి లైఫ్‌లోకి రాజు (అరవింద్ స్వామి) ఎంటర్ అవుతాడు. మరోవైపు రాజును చంపాడనికి పోలీస్ కమీషనర్ నటరాజన్ (శరత్ కుమార్) సహా పోలీస్ ఫోర్స్, రౌడీలు రంగంలోకి దిగుతారు. అసలు ఈ రాజు ఎవరు.. అతన్ని చంపడానికి అంతమంది ఎందుకు వెంట పడుతున్నారు..? మధ్యలో ముఖ్యమంత్రి (ప్రియమణి) ఎందుకు ఇన్వాల్వ్ అవుతారు..? అసలు రాజును సిబిఐకి అప్పగించాలని శివ ఎందుకు అంత బలంగా ప్రయత్నిస్తుంటాడు..? ఈ ప్రయాణంలో శివకి ఎదురైన సవాళ్లు ఏమిటి? మధ్యలో రేవతి ఎక్కడికి వెళ్లింది అనేది మిగిలిన కథ..

కథ విషయానికి వస్తే కస్టడీ పాయింట్ కాస్త కొత్తగా అనిపిస్తుంది. రొటీన్ రెగ్యులర్ మాస్ సినిమాలా కాకుండా.. స్క్రీన్ ప్లే బేస్డ్ డ్రామాగా దీన్ని తెరకెక్కించాడు దర్శకుడు వెంకట్ ప్రభు. ముఖ్యంగా ఈయన సినిమాల్లో ఎక్కువగా కనిపించే ఆ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే మ్యాజిక్ ఇందులోనూ కనిపిస్తుంది. కాకపోతే ఎక్కువ కాదు.. అక్కడక్కడా ఛమక్కులు మాత్రమే. హీరో తన స్టేషన్‌కి వచ్చిన విలన్‌ను కొందరి నుంచి కాపాడాల్సి వస్తుంది. సాధారణంగా సినిమాల్లో విలన్లను చంపేస్తుంటారు కానీ ఇందులో కాపాడటమే కథ. దానికోసం హీరో ఎన్ని సమస్యలు ఫేస్ చేసాడనే లైన్‌ను తీసుకుని కథ అల్లుకున్నాడు వెంకట్ ప్రభు. కస్టడీ కథ అంతా 1995 టైంలో జరుగుతుంది. సినిమాలో యాక్షన్ బాగుంది కానీ లవ్ స్టోరీ, కామెడీ పెద్దగా వర్కవుట్ కాలేదు. చైతూ, కృతి శెట్టి మధ్య సీన్స్ కూడా అంతగా ఆకట్టుకోలేదనే చెప్పాలి. సినిమా టేక్ ఆఫ్ అవ్వడానికి కనీసం 25 నిమిషాలకు పైగానే తీసుకున్నాడు దర్శకుడు. ఆ తర్వాత కానీ కథ ట్రాక్ ఎక్కదు. ఎప్పుడైతే కథలోకి అరవింద్ స్వామి వస్తాడో.. అప్పట్నుంచి కథ బాగానే ముందుకు వెళ్తుంది.

ఇంటర్వెల్ వరకు చాలా వేగంగా వెళ్తుంది సినిమా. సెకెండాఫ్‌పై అంచనాలు పెంచేస్తుంది ఇంటర్వెల్ సీక్వెన్స్. ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో పాటలు, లవ్ ట్రాక్ మైనస్ కాగా.. ప్రీ ఇంటర్వెల్ సీన్ హైలెట్ అయింది. సినిమా పర్లేదు.. సెకండాఫ్ ఈ మాత్రం ఉన్నా చాలు పక్కా బొమ్మ బ్లాక్‌బస్టర్ అనుకుంటున్న సమయంలో.. ఊహించని రీతిలో డౌన్ అయిపోయింది కథనం. సెకెండాఫ్ ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్ నార్మల్‌లా ఉండటం.. విలన్ బ్యాగ్రౌండ్ వీక్ అవ్వడంతో కథ దారి తప్పింది. దానికి తోడు స్లో నరేషన్ చాలా వరకు సినిమాపై అభిప్రాయం మార్చేసింది. ట్విస్టులున్నా.. పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకోవు. సినిమా కథ అంతా 48 గంటల్లోనే సాగుతుంది. నాలుగేళ్ల కింద వచ్చిన కార్తి ఖైదీ సినిమాకు ఖరీదైన జిరాక్స్ తీస్తే ఎలా ఉంటుందో.. ఇప్పుడు కస్టడీ కూడా అలాగే అనిపిస్తుంది. సిఎంగా ప్రియమణి పాత్ర జయలలితను గుర్తు చేస్తుంది.

శివ పాత్రలో నాగ చైతన్య బాగున్నాడు.. మరోసారి మెప్పించాడు.. తనదైన శైలిలో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. లుక్ పరంగానూ మారిపోయాడు చైతూ. ఇక కృతి శెట్టి ఉన్నంతలో పర్లేదు. సినిమాలో హీరో కంటే ఎక్కువగా అరవింద్ స్వామి హైలెట్ అయ్యాడు. చేసేది క్రైమ్ అయినా కూడా.. తాను నమ్మిందే న్యాయం అనుకునే పాత్ర ఇది. అరవింద్ స్వామి డైలాగులు కూడా బాగున్నాయి.. అక్కడక్కడా మంచి వినోదం పండింది. నటరాజన్‌గా శరత్ కుమార్ పాత్ర కూడా బాగుంది. అటు శరత్ కుమార్.. ఇటు అరవింద్ స్వామి పాత్రలు హైలైట్ కావడంతో.. ఆటోమేటిక్‌గా చైతూ కూడా హైలైట్ అయిపోయాడు. ప్రియమణి జస్ట్ ఓకే.. మిగిలిన వాళ్లంతా ఓకే.

టెక్నికల్ టీం:

యువన్ శంకర్ రాజా, ఇళయ రాజ అందించిన బ్యాగ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ బాగుంది. కొన్ని సీన్స్‌కు పర్ఫెక్టుగా యాప్ట్ అయిన మ్యూజిక్.. మరికొన్ని చోట్ల తేలిపోయింది. పాటలు పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకోలేదు. ఎస్ఆర్ కతీర్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. ఎడిటింగ్ మాత్రం కాస్త వీక్.. అక్కడక్కడా కొన్ని సీన్స్ బోర్ కొట్టిస్తాయి. ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ పర్లేదు. వెంకట్ ప్రభు దర్శకుడిగా ఫస్టాఫ్ దుమ్ము లేపినా.. సెకండాఫ్ మాత్రం వదిలేసాడు. ఫస్టాఫ్ తీరుగా సెకండాఫ్ ఉండుంటే కస్టడీ రేంజ్ మారిపోయేది.

Custody movie review: Torn between being a campy Venkat Prabhu film and a formulaic star vehicle

Custody review: venkat prabhu directorial custody doesn’t decide what type of movie it wants to be till the very last scene of the film..

There’s a surprise entry of a character towards the tail-end of Custody , which is like a hat-tip to Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. The scene kind of breaks the fourth wall–one of those Venkat Prabhu things–because the filmmaker is now just playing to the gallery. Of course, audiences immediately react. It’s fun, but at the same time, it is incongruous. There are many such trademark quirks of the director spread across Custody, which don’t sit well with the sombre tone of the story and the motive of the protagonist. However, it is those quirks that stay with us after the film, because the rest is just a formulaic everyday action story with contrived emotions.

When we first see Shiva ( Naga Chaitanya ), a small-time police constable, he is seen stopping the convoy of the chief minister Dakshayini (Priyamani) to make way for an ambulance. Dakshayin lauds his action and says that he shouldn’t let even a CM or a PM come in the way of his service to the people. Of course, her lines come back to bite her later. As Shiva grapples with problems in his life, a road accident puts him in an extraordinary situation, which demands him to defy his police force and the government and take the gangster Raju, sorry Razooo (Arvind Swami), in his custody. He has to produce him in the Bangalore High Court in 48 hours while the whole Tamil Nadu force headed by IG Nataraj (Sarathkumar) is on his tail.

Custody doesn’t decide what type of movie it wants to be till the very last scene of the film. A filmmaker, who is known for mocking some of the clichés of Tamil cinema, here resorts to using the same in many instances. Be it the unnecessary songs that don’t help the film in any way despite being the collaborative effort of Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja or the flashback sequence that’s introduced to provide a motive for the protagonist, whenever Venkat Prabhu tries to make Custody a normal commercial entertainer, it ends up disappointing.

On the other hand, whenever the director is in his zone, things get pretty enjoyable, like the characterisation of Razooo. His sarcasm and Arvind Swami’s adequate performance are some of the few redeeming factors of the film. A character, at gunpoint, delivers emotive lines about truth, and Razooo says something to the tune of, “Idhellam edhukku solikkitu irukaaru? (Why is he blabbering all this now?)” Custody needed more of this than things like a forced situation that comes out as an excuse for a song. The tone of the film thus ends up being as inconsistent as its Tamil dubbing. Naga Chaitanya and the lead actors have put in a lot of effort in making the film a true blue Tamil-Telugu bilingual. But, when it comes to the songs and the dialogues of the peripheral characters, we are only looking at a Tamil-dubbed Telugu film.

This is not the first time Venkat Prabhu has tried to blend some serious tropes with his trademark humor. He pulled off such a cocktail effortlessly with Saroja. The problem with Custody seems to be that, unlike the director’s sophomore film, this has to fit in a commercial hero amidst all things wacky. Or maybe, this is an attempt of the director to break the mould that traps him, but it has come at the cost of the movie lacking the trademark originality of the filmmaker.

Actor Indresh Malik, known for his role as Ustaad ji on the Netflix series Heeramandi, received praise and a reward of Rs 500 from filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his moving performance in the 'nath' sequence. కథ (Custody Movie Story) : శివ (నాగ చైతన్య) సఖినేటిపల్లి పోలీస్ స్టేషనులో కానిస్టేబుల్. అంబులెన్స్ కి దారి ఇవ్వడం కోసం ఏకంగా సీయం దాక్షాయణి (ప్రియమణి) కాన్వాయ్ ఆపి వార్తల్లోకి ఎక్కుతాడు. డ్యూటీ అంటే ప్రాణం పెడతాడు. అతడు అంటే రేవతి (కృతి శెట్టి)కి ప్రాణం. కులాలు వేరు కావడంతో అమ్మాయి ఇంట్లో ఒప్పుకోరు. వేరే అబ్బాయి (వెన్నెల కిశోర్)తో పెళ్లి నిశ్చయం చేస్తారు. రేవతికి ఆ పెళ్లి ఇష్టం లేదు. లేచిపోయి వస్తానని చెబుతుంది. లేదంటే చావడానికి రెడీ అంటుంది!

విశ్లేషణ (Custody Telugu Review) : వెంకట్ ప్రభు సినిమాలు అంటే టిపికల్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లేతో రేసీగా సాగుతాయి. కథలో వచ్చే మలుపులు ఊహకు అందని విధంగా, మాంచి థ్రిల్ ఇస్తూ మనల్ని మెస్మరైజ్ చేస్తాయి. 'కస్టడీ'లో ఆ థ్రిల్ & రేసీ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే మిస్ అయ్యింది.   'కస్టడీ' కథకు వస్తే... ఇదొక సాధారణ రివేంజ్ డ్రామా! అయితే... ఎట్టి పరిస్థితుల్లోనూ విలన్ చావకూడదని హీరో ప్రయత్నించడమే కాన్సెప్ట్! ఇటువంటి కథలను చాలా అసాధారణంగా రేసీగా చెప్పడం వెంకట్ ప్రభు స్టైల్. కానీ, ఎందుకో ఈసారి ఆయన స్టైల్ పక్కకి పెట్టి... కథా నేపథ్యానికి తగ్గట్టు నిదానంగా ముందుకు వెళ్లారు. దానికి తోడు ఇళయరాజా, యువన్ శంకర్ రాజాల నేపథ్య సంగీతం సైతం ఆశించిన రీతిలో లేదు. థియేటర్ నుంచి బయటకు వచ్చిన తర్వాత గుర్తుంచుకునే పాట ఒక్కటీ లేదు. ప్రేక్షకుడి ఊహకు తగ్గట్టు నెమ్మదిగా సినిమా ముందుకు వెళ్లడంతో కాస్త నిరాశ ఉంటుంది. ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ రొటీన్ కావడంతో సినిమాలో కావాల్సిన ఎమోషన్ క్యారీ కాలేదు.

'కస్టడీ' నిదానంగా ముందుకు వెళ్ళినప్పటికీ... కొన్ని సీన్లలో వెంకట్ ప్రభు తన మార్క్ చూపించారు. అండర్ వాటర్ సీక్వెన్సులు బాగా తీశారు. ఇంటర్వెల్ ముందు వరకు ఎక్కువగా ప్రేమ కథ, కామెడీ మీద కాన్సంట్రేట్ చేయడంతో ఏదో మిస్ అయిన ఫీలింగ్ ఉంటుంది. ఇంటర్వెల్ బ్యాంగ్ కూడా అంత గొప్పగా లేదు. కానీ, ఆ తర్వాత వెంకట్ ప్రభు కొంత మ్యాజిక్ చేశారు. లాజిక్స్ పక్కన పెడితే... 'సింధూర పువ్వు' రాంకీ వచ్చినప్పుడు మాత్రం థియేటర్లలో విజిల్స్ పడతాయి. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బావున్నాయి. సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్, ఆర్ట్ డైరెక్టర్ 90ల నేపథ్యాన్ని తెరపై చక్కగా ఆవిష్కరించారు. 

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : వెంకట్ ప్రభు సినిమాల్లో హీరోలు అంటూ ఎవరూ ప్రత్యేకంగా ఉండరు. క్యారెక్టర్లు, క్యారెక్టరైజేషన్లు హైలైట్ అవుతాయి. 'కస్టడీ'కి వస్తే... అరవింద్ స్వామి హైలైట్ అవుతారు. ఈతరం ప్రేక్షకులకు 'అగ్గిపెట్టె ఉందా?' అని వినబడితే ఆయన గుర్తుకు వస్తారేమో!? పేరుకు క్రిమినల్ క్యారెక్టర్ కానీ... కొన్ని సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆయన యాక్టింగ్, ఆ డైలాగ్స్ మంచి కామెడీ జెనరేట్ చేశాయి.

శివ పాత్రకి అక్కినేని నాగ చైతన్య న్యాయం చేశారు. ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ లో లాంగ్ హెయిర్ స్టైల్ చూస్తే యంగ్ నాగార్జునను చూసినట్టు ఉంటుంది. కృతి శెట్టి రోల్ ఓకే. 'వెన్నెల' కిశోర్ కొన్ని సన్నివేశాల్లో నవ్వించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు. సంపత్ రాజ్, శరత్ కుమార్, గోపరాజు రమణ తదితరులు పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు చేశారు. సీఎంగా ప్రియమణి పాత్ర పరిథి తక్కువ. ఉన్నంతలో బాగా చేశారు. 'వంటలక్క' అలియాస్ ప్రేమి విశ్వనాథ్ ఓ సన్నివేశంలో మెరిశారు. 

నాగ చైతన్యకు అన్నయ్య పాత్రలో తమిళ హీరో జీవా, అతని ప్రేయసిగా ఆనంది అతిథి పాత్రల్లో మెరిశారు. ఓ పాటలో దర్శకుడు కోదండరామిరెడ్డి తనయుడు, హీరో వైభవ్ స్పెషల్ అప్పియరెన్స్ ఇచ్చారు.

చివరగా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : 'కస్టడీ'లో వెంకట్ ప్రభు మ్యాజిక్ మిస్ అయ్యింది. కానీ, ఆయన మార్క్ సీన్లు కొన్ని ఉన్నాయి. అరవింద్ స్వామి అదరగొట్టారు. మధ్య మధ్యలో నవ్వుకోవడానికి అయితే ఒకే. ఎటువంటి అంచనాలు పెట్టుకోకుండా థియేటర్లకు వెళితే కొంతలో కొంత ఎంజాయ్ చేయవచ్చు. అక్కినేని అభిమానులు ఆశించే విజయం కోసం అయితే నాగ చైతన్య మరో ప్రయత్నం చేయాలి.

Custody movie review: Naga Chaitanya's action thriller has too many subplots, needed a lot more to make an impact

Custody movie review: naga chaitanya's latest film is one of those action dramas that never realise their potential and get lost midway..

Venkat Prabhu’s Custody, which marks his maiden collaboration with Naga Chaitanya , is built on a very interesting premise. Unlike most mainstream films, where the hero locks horns with the villain and eventually kills him, here it is Chaitanya’s character’s life mission to protect the antagonist, played by Arvind Swami. For a story that predominantly unfolds over a span of 48 hours and involves some solid chase sequences, the film wastes quite a lot of time initially in needless subplots. The film opens with a gas leak accident, which results in the death of 40 people. The story quickly introduces us to Shiva (Naga Chaitanya), a constable with his moral compass in the right place. In his introduction scene, he stops the chief minister's (Priyamani) convoy to make way for an ambulance and his deed becomes the news headlines.

Shiva lives with his parents and younger sister. He’s in love with Revathi, a driving school instructor and they decide to elope and get married. On the night Shiva is supposed to pick up Revathy and marry, he gets involved in a road rage case and arrests the two people involved in the incident. Soon, Shiva learns that one among them is Raju, a local hitman who does all the dirty work for the CM and her party. The other man in the road rage incident is a CBI officer, who has to produce Raju in a court in Bengaluru the next day. As news spreads that Raju is locked up, the CM sends out a team to kill him. Shiva quickly realises the gravity of the situation and takes the responsibility of handing over Raju in the court.

Custody is one of those action films that never realise their potential and get lost midway. It wastes a lot of time initially in the scenes (which includes two boring songs) between Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty. If only all this excessive flab was removed and the story only focused on Shiva, Raju and all those men who are after them, this would’ve been a cracker of an action-thriller. After the 40th minute, when Shiva and Raju are on the run, the film really picks up momentum and it really works on the action front. The pre-interval action stretch (including an underwater sequence) has to be one of the major highlights of the film. But every time the momentum picks up, the story takes a detour to focus on Shiva and Revathy. It is this needless distraction that makes Custody unbearable at times.

Naga Chaitanya plays his part quite well and this is definitely an attempt worth some praise. It is Arvind Swami as Raju that really stands out among the actors. In the film’s most tense moments, he brings in spurts of humour that works so well. Scenes between Chaitanya and Arvind work quite well and they form an unlikely bond which could’ve been explored more than wasting time on the romance portion. Sarath Kumar is a major miscast and he struggles to add any value to the ensemble cast.

A predictable yet engaging action drama.

Custody has the kind of story that�s predictable and some of the characters could�ve been fully realised to make this experience better than what it is. But if action dramas with a touch of emotion are your cup of tea, this is right down your lane. (more)

Works in bits and pieces

Custody manages to engage in bits and pieces but apart from those portions, there isn�t anything great to rave about. Naga Chaitanya and Arvind Swami try their level best, but it is the direction and story of Venkat Prabhu that has to be blamed. If you are a fan of Venkat Prabhu or Naga Chaitanya then make sure to lower your expectations before watching the film. (more)

This Naga Chaitanya film had interesting premise but let down by weak screenplay

CUSTODY film story revolves between a sincere and young constable Shiva (Naga Chaitanya), CBI Officer (Sampath), Hitman Raju (Aravind Swamy) and a rogue police officer (R. Sharat Kumar). Constable Shiva is forced to follow them after being caught in the crossfire between the CBI and Mafia. Shiva’s love interest Revathi also join the chase occasionally; Rest of the story is about how and why the two teams are chasing Mr. Raju

There are enough expectations for this film due to the director Venkat Prabhu who delivered decent films in the past. Set in 1996, the film opens in a village near Rajahmundry. A bomb blast kills 40 people, thepremise is connected back to the main villain later in the film. The introduction of constable shiva, his love episodes with Revathi (Kriti Shetty) are very stale. The attempted comedy involving Vennela Kishore is poorly written. Once the Raju (Aravind Swamy), CBI Officer and Sarath Kumar characters enter, the film speeds up a little bit. The low budgeted chasing episodes could not leave any impact. Butoverall, the interval part sets some hope on second half. Second half begins with backstory of the shiva family. Subsequently the film goes on and on with the rogue cops chasing Raju. One may wonder why this film has taken 1996 backdrop.Even technically the film is not up to the mark. The background score is lousy, and the songs are bad.

The main drawback of the film is that patchy production values. The only good thing that worked out is the casting. There is a huge number of reputed artists involved but the output is marred by the weak script. Entertainment values are missing and to compensate for itsaudiences don’t even have adequate action. At some point the film appears like a Tamil film with few Telugu actors. Director Venkat Prabhu seems missed his flavor due to bilingual attempt.

Performances: As always Naga Chaitanya is good in his role, putting his best efforts. Krithi Shetty is adequate as heroine. Aravind Swamy, Priyamani, Sampath and R. Sarathkumar played other main characters. Aravinda swamy getup and characterization is irritating.

Verdict: ‘ Custody ‘ is a patience testing action film with huge casting. The repetitive chase sequences with same trio didn’t offer at least average content. The flashback family story is an age-old one. It is a Tamil film with few Telugu actors in it. Overall, all crafts failed !
