NOT-SO-GENTLE GIANT

omos wwe biography

W WE superstar Omos doesn’t look like your typical babyface.

With a seven-foot-three, 400-plus-pound frame and a stern resting face, Omos (Jordan Omogbehin), brow furrowed, cuts the figure of a typical WWE villain. He was recruited as an obvious “big bad,” a Goliath destined to serve as foil to any number of underdog good guys. He is a spiritual descendant of Andre the Giant, The Great Khali, Big Show, and Kane, men so physically imposing their mere presence creates peril for opponents and automatic table stakes for fans.

Billed as “The Nigerian Giant,” his WWE career to date has placed him in exactly that role. From bodyguard for Shane McMahon’s short-lived Raw Underground to tag-team partner and heavy for A.J. Styles, Omos’s introduction to the WWE universe has been exactly what you’d expect. And it’s been successful, with marquee matches and a run as a tag-team champion.

As he’s struck out on his own as a singles wrestler, though, a strange thing has happened. The online wrestling community has put a spotlight on a more lovable side of Jordan Omogbehin, celebrating his artwork and his sense of humour, sharing his “Giant Problems” social media posts, and inundating him and his new wife with well-wishes on their wedding day . These “Omosapiens,” as they call themselves, have seen in Omogbehin one of their own, one who just happens to be enormous enough to wreak havoc in a WWE ring.

OMOSAPIENS are coming unglued for @TheGiantOmos on #RawAfterMania ! pic.twitter.com/yA9AllSbyF — WWE (@WWE) April 4, 2023

The response hasn’t changed his on-screen presentation, for now, but this massive, intimidating, vicious heel has developed an earnest and wholesome fanbase. And in an era where wrestling fans are as aware of the person as they are the character, Omogbehin’s popularity threatens to usurp the unlikability of Omos. A swell of online support and pockets of cheers for the bad guy from live crowds begs an unexpected question: Could WWE’s next big villain be a massive babyface in waiting?

“From a psychology standpoint, it can be very challenging for someone who’s seven-foot-three, muscles, and huge and intimidating, to get sympathy,” Omos says. “Heels don’t inspire people, only babyfaces do. And for me, that’s going to be the challenge: How can this big, giant person inspire people? Because there’s no relatability to someone who’s seven-foot-three … the moment where you see me with somebody smaller than me, the brain says, ‘I want the little guy to kick the big guy’s ass.’”

That’s usually true. Then again, very little about Omogbehin’s journey from shy Nigerian teen to top NCAA basketball prospect to WWE superstar has been usual.

omos wwe biography

O mogbehin playing a character in front of thousands of fans live and millions on TV is not something those who knew him in his youth envisioned. A shy, quiet kid growing up in Lagos, he was more content to be alone drawing and painting, watching anime, and occasionally watching WCW with his grandmother than he was to be outside socializing.

It was basketball that first brought him out of his shell and, eventually, took him to the United States. After shooting up to six-foot-seven around age 12, Omogbehin was recruited for a basketball camp run by Masai Ujiri’s Giants of Africa program.

“I had just started playing basketball that summer, and I just kind of bum-rushed into the camp,” Omogbehin says. “I was a very tall kid that couldn’t walk and chew bubblegum.”

Raw was par for the course for a still-emerging Giants of Africa program in 2005. Ujiri remembers Omogbehin as “just learning the sport, learning the game,” and Omogbehin’s early camp work focused on developing a baseline skill level and understanding. From there, his size and commitment to improving took over, turning a raw kid into an interesting prospect.

Through the connections made at those camps, Omogbehin got on the radar of prep schools in the United States. A few years after his first camp, Ujiri and Giants of Africa co-founder Godwin Owinje helped him find a fit at Atlantic Shores Christian School in Virginia and transition to the United States, where he’d be away from his family for an extended period for the first time.

“Without them, there’s no coming,” Omogbehin says. “What Masai has done with Giants of Africa is primarily the reason why I’m here in WWE. Without him having that for us young Nigerian kids, without Giants of Africa, there is no Omos.”

Immersed in basketball (and sneaker) culture, Omogbehin set goals for himself. He wanted to become a top-50 prospect in his college class, earn a scholarship to Georgetown University, and eventually make the NBA. He picked up advanced aspects of the game quickly, and coaches found the right buttons to push to bring the competitive fire out of the otherwise quiet teenager.

On his way to those goals, though, he tore his ACL, costing him his senior year of high school in 2010 and slowing his momentum as a collegiate prospect. Instead of Georgetown, Omogbehin landed at the University of South Florida. As he was rehabilitating, he tore that same ACL again. He admits, in retrospect, this is when he first considered what his path might be if basketball didn’t work out. In the moment, though, he pushed forward. There were bigger obstacles to come.

Following a game with USF, once Omogbehin had returned to play, a doctor in attendance raised a concern to the team. Based on Omogbehin’s particular size and facial structure, the doctor worried Omogbehin had an undiagnosed brain tumor. It was a bold assessment from afar. It was also a correct one, and one that may have saved Omogbehin from more serious complications down the line.

The months that followed included surgery and a period as a self-described “guinea pig” while doctors tried to figure out the right mix of medications and hormone treatments. As endocrinologists studied Omogbehin, he was also diagnosed with acromegaly (which he sums up as “you grow wide and big”) and gigantism (“you grow tall”). The rare combination of conditions made for a lot of trial-and-error with specialists, and, he says, some of “the darkest moments of my life.”

“It broke me down for a little bit,” he says. “It was tough, because in that moment you’re alone. And, you know, imagine that type of information being put in an 18-, 19-year-old kid. The ACL injuries I could handle, I could recover from, but this was completely far from what I had imagined. And for me, at that point in time, it was a lot for me to take on.”

The impact was far-reaching. Omogbehin dealt with a great deal of uncertainty about his health and future, and the feeling he was failing to accomplish the basketball goals his family had sacrificed for him to achieve. He also had to contend with altered hormone levels in a hyper-competitive sports environment.

“I was all over the place, man,” he says. “Even when I got a hold of it [medically], I was all over the place emotionally. I got severely depressed. It was bad.”

Basketball reality set in, too. He’d played just 159 minutes over three years at South Florida, had two ACL repairs on his record, and was now dealing with multiple major medical conditions. At the same time, the NBA was transitioning away from the type of centre he’d envisioned himself as and worked to become, away from “the Greg Monroes and the Roy Hibberts” who spent years in college and emerged as system-oriented bigs.

Omogbehin eventually transferred to Morgan State for a season, then to Division II King’s University to complete a master’s in business. During that time, the wheels were turning on what could come next.

omos wwe biography

D oug Martin knew how to get the competitive fire out of Omogbehin on the AAU circuit. Now a G League coach in the Los Angeles Clippers’ organization, Martin would prod at Omogbehin and tell him basketball wasn’t for him, and that they were going to instead ship him to Connecticut to wrestle for WWE.

“I used to get infuriated,” Omogbehin remembers. “It was just something he said to get me to play hard. And I used to get so mad and I would go and score 20 points and say, ‘See, it’s there!’”

The seeds that were planted tongue-in-cheek eventually bore fruit. When Omogbehin was at South Florida, he’d accompanied football player Antoine Pozniak to a meeting with Steve Keirn, who ran a WWE developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling, at the time. Keirn quickly became enamoured but even though Omogbehin says “the sales pitch was great,” he initially pocketed the idea for when he was officially done with basketball.

That time came a few years later, when Omogbehin’s college eligibility was up and a deal to play in China fell through due to immigration issues. A friend reminded him of his flirtation with wrestling, and with no other ideas front of mind, Omogbehin thought it was worth revisiting.

On a whim, he sent a casual email to Canyon Ceman, then WWE’s senior director of talent development. Ceman asked Omogbehin to send some recent pictures, then asked him to call as soon as he could. That was on a Sunday. They wanted him in for a tryout Monday morning.

Omogbehin had no idea what to expect when he and his then-girlfriend (now wife) made the drive from Tampa to Orlando to WWE’s Performance Center.

“From the first time I hit the ropes, I said, ‘Ohhh, this is fun,’” he remembers. “I just felt so liberated. I never felt this in basketball.”

WWE was as enthralled as Omogbehin, telling him he had a job whenever he wanted one. The next day, he attended a taping of NXT, where he met Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Shawn Michaels, a pair of WWE Hall of Famers and key figures in the company’s developmental system.

Levesque did the soft sell, telling Omogbehin to chase basketball if he needed to and to let them know if and when he wanted to try wrestling. Quietly, though, Levesque texted Ceman during the show, asking if Omogbehin was taking to the experience.

“He shows me the text, and I’m like, “Yup, I’m doing this!’” Omogbehin says. “And that is how this whole life started.”

Omogbehin called Coach Martin — eventually the best man in his wedding — and reminded him of the threat he used to make to him as a teenager.

“I said, ‘You’re not gonna believe what happened,’” Omogbehin says. “He was just, like, cracking up on the phone. He always said it. I just never imagined me being a wrestler, but once I got there, wrestling felt more home than basketball.”

omos wwe biography

T he wrestling education of Omos progressed quickly.

Seeing a potential star, WWE made sure he was surrounded with training and resources, including legendary big men like The Undertaker, Mark Henry, and Kevin Nash to learn from. A self-described sponge, Omogbehin still spends downtime watching older footage to learn the business and pick up anything he can from stars of the past.

WWE responded to his aptitude by pushing him, if carefully. First, he was behind a mask as a giant ninja as part of a series of semi-serious backstage segments. (“I’m one of the Hidden Village in Naruto ,” he said to himself to get hyped up to play that part, referring to a Japanese manga series about a ninja.) A supporting role alongside an established character like McMahon helped him loosen up and learn to play off his counterparts on camera. Teaming with Styles put him in big matches where his physical duties were limited alongside one of the greatest in-ring performers of the generation. Early as a solo wrestler, he was managed by MVP, one of the best character-workers of recent vintage.

Through the early years, Omos’s character has been pretty straightforward. “Bad guy, a couple suits, let’s get it done,” he says. As he’s improved, WWE has given him more opportunity to show what he can do, putting him in marquee programs with main event stars like Bobby Lashley, Brock Lesnar, and Seth Rollins. He’s developed into a menacing presence those who knew a teenage Omogbehin chuckle at.

“There’s a big difference from that youthful kid,” Ujiri says by phone, between a trip to South Africa for Basketball Without Borders and this August’s 20th anniversary Giants of Africa event in Rwanda. “He’s just a really lovable, big kid, and that was it. It’s a big contrast, but very, very interesting.”

Omogbehin is trying to get Ujiri out to a WWE event, which Ujiri says he’d love to do. In the meantime, Ujiri understands the potential for Omogbehin to inspire the next generation of African athletes beyond just basketball.

“These kids need a lot of opportunity, and some of them might fall into basketball and follow that path. There’s a huge ecosystem, you know, that if you don’t play basketball, you could do something within sports where you realize your dreams, like Jordan,” Ujiri says.

A character like Omos inspiring people is not the usual formula you see in wrestling, or generally in storytelling. As Omogbehin laid out, it’s natural to root for a physical underdog. Still, a tide turned around the time of his match with Rollins. It was Omos’s best performance to date from an in-ring quality standpoint, his physical development and understanding of wrestling psychology reaching a level where he seemed ready for a true solo run. That coincided with Omogbehin becoming more open sharing his life on social media, from his art to his love of anime to his recent wedding. Initially starting as a joke on Cameo, the movement of Omosapiens has become larger and louder in wrestling communities on Twitter and Reddit.

“It’s been interesting to see, and see them enjoy, you know, me as Omos and also Jordan the person, and everything I do and what I’m interested in outside of wrestling,” Omogbehin says. “it’s been a trip, man. It’s been fun to watch.”

He still has his hesitations about his potential as a fan-favourite on-screen. The timing and execution have to be perfect, and Omogbehin worries about his character as sympathetic failing to be believable. He may ultimately prefer to keep his inspirational personal story, from Nigeria through medical hardship to WWE, purely off-screen. “But I have thought about it quite a bit,” he says, a slow chuckle from deep in his chest emerging behind a wide smile.

If his life in wrestling continues to unfold as it has so far, he may not have a choice. He made his debut and a WrestleMania appearance in the same city, Tampa, where he spent so much time thinking he was failing. That “poetic justice,” in his words, doesn’t go unappreciated by the audience. Nor does his affability on social media, in interviews, or when he breaks character to make a young fan smile at a live show.

A babyface arc for Omos almost writes itself: From a young, quiet, artistic kid watching WCW with his grandma in Nigeria, to the United States through the Giants of Africa basketball program, through a series of medical scares, and to the largest wrestling stage in the world.

“This is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. This is fun,” Omogbehin says. “To wake up every day, go to work, play a character on TV that either people love or hate, people are so invested in the character you present on TV. What we do, it’s so amazing, man. And to know that some kid out there watching the show, they’re going to grow up watching me on TV. I could have never pictured this life.”

Little about Omogbehin’s life has played out the way he pictured, so no path can be ruled out from here. Even one as an unlikely fan favourite.

Omos details health scares that nearly prevented his signing with WWE: 'Tomorrow is not promised'

The giant's remarkable stature sets him apart from his peers in wwe, but it nearly prevented him from signing with the promotion.

20220508-wmbacklash-e-omos-76057750d0186b3021b10ab0f8387a0f.jpg

Omos is a physical marvel, towering at a legitimate height of 7-foot-3. His efforts in WWE are sometimes overshadowed by his stature with critics questioning his bookings opposite major performers like Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39. Omos' size has certainly expedited his climb, but that ladder was nearly yanked away before he took his first massive step.

Omos underwent two brain surgeries during his freshman year of college to remedy a tumor that could have caused cardiac arrest or blindness. If that wasn't concerning enough, Omos also had a trio of rare conditions he says bestowed him with the unfortunate title of a medical marvel. Omos has acromegaly (the same condition that Andre the Giant suffered from), gigantism and partial Cushing's disease, he previously told the "Out of Character" podcast. His health records were an Omos-sized red flag for WWE. The promotion nearly refused to sign Omos, who was financially broke at the time, because of it. That is why every opportunity presented -- big or small -- is not lost on Omos.

"It put me in a state where I truly appreciate everything that I am given and everything that I do," Omos told CBS Sports ahead of his match against Seth Rollins at Backlash on May 6. "I have a passion for life and I understand that tomorrow is not promised. As an 18-year-old, I felt that situation where I didn't know what to do and had to take everything day by day. It gives me the perspective of appreciating the loved ones around me and the moments that I experience. I make sure that I enjoy every single moment.

"Starting with AJ Styles and winning the tag team titles in Tampa. Breaking off and going on my own against Bobby Lashley [at WrestleMania] last year. I wrestled arguably the biggest draw in pro-wrestling today, which is Brock Lesnar, at WrestleMania 39 in L.A. I have accomplished so much in the last few years. For me, it's having gratitude and being grateful and not taking things for granted."

Check out the full interview with Omos below.

The path to WWE superstardom is unique to each athlete. Sami Zayn spent more than a decade on the independent circuit. Roman Reigns honed his skills for two years in WWE's developmental territory. Big Show established himself as WCW headliner before jumping ship in the late '90s. Kane endured an awful dentist gimmick before being repackaged as "The Big Red Machine."  Omos was thrown into the deep end much sooner than most.

"The Nigerian Giant" signed with WWE in January 2019 and made his Monday Night Raw debut 17 months later. By October 2020, he was teaming up with former world champion Styles. A vocal portion of professional wrestling fans have been hyper-critical of Omos' in-ring skills. Fans were also very critical of Dominick Mysterio before he found his footing as a bratty man-child with a tongue-in-cheek prisoner gimmick. Omos keeps his thumb on the pulse of the industry and pulls from it as motivation.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kazeem 🍎 (@kazeem)

"I realized that I just need to go and perform for me, obviously, as long as the live crowd enjoys it," Omos said. "I see everything online and on the Internet. It strikes the core sometimes. But at the end of the day, all you need to do is go out there to perform and make them shut up. It's as simple as that... I see screenshots from various journalists and interviews. I use it as motivation to go out there and perform."

Key Takeaways

  • Omos, the "Nigerian Giant," has been absent from WWE television to build him as a special attraction, similar to Andre the Giant, Brock Lesnar, and Roman Reigns.
  • Omos debuted as a "Giant Ninja" and later became AJ Styles' bodyguard and tag team partner, winning the Raw Tag Team Championships.
  • Omos has had feuds with Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar, but has faced recent losses and is expected to make a comeback in the 2024 Royal Rumble.

If you've been watching WWE Monday Night Raw for the past several months, you may have noticed that a certain "Nigerian Giant" has been missing in action. While Omos may not be a megastar that fans flock to, like CM Punk, Randy Orton, John Cena, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and so on, he did create an interesting presence when he stepped foot inside the squared circle. Omos is a huge attraction (pun intended), and can be utilized by WWE in various ways. However, there is a good reason as to why Omos has been absent from WWE television as of late, so without any further ado, let's dive in and see exactly what Omos has been up to lately.

Why WWE Superstar Omos Is Such A Fascinating Medical Anomaly, Explained

WWE's Omos has three disorders which make him a giant and also a medical anomaly.

Omos Made His Initial WWE Debut As A "Giant Ninja"

Omos debuted during the wwe raw underground era.

After competing in several matches at WWE house shows, Omos made his official on-screen debut as part of Akira Tozawa's "Ninja" clan, with Omos being referred to as the "Giant Ninja". Shortly thereafter, he was repackaged and presented as part bodyguard, bouncer, and doorman for Shane McMahon's Raw Underground segments . His impressive size caught the attention of the WWE Universe, but Raw Underground was canceled in October 2020. Omos received his next big break in the form of an absolutely "Phenomenal" tag team partner!

Omos Becomes AJ Styles' New Bodyguard And Tag Team Partner

Omos was a raw tag team champion.

Omos was introduced as AJ Styles' new bodyguard and eventually his tag team partner. Omos spent his time helping Styles in his matches, making sure that he had the upperhand and would bail him out of tough situations, typical stuff that you'd see in a wrestler's role as a bodyguard. Omos continued to be in this bodyguard role until March 2021, when he transitioned into AJ's tag partner .

Omos received his big break and on-screen wrestling debut at WrestleMania 37, as he and AJ Styles captured the Raw Tag Team Championships from The New Day. Their reign lasted roughly four months, until the duo dropped the Raw Tag Team Titles to RK-Bro at Summer Slam 2021. AJ Styles and Omos failed to recapture the tag titles at Crown Jewel during a rematch against RK-Bro.

This began to build up some dissension and lots of tension between AJ Styles and Omos. This culminated on an episode of Monday Night Raw in December 2021, as Omos refused to tag in AJ Styles, resulting in a loss to Rey and Dominik Mysterio. A brawl took place after the match, effectively ending their tandem, leading to a face turn for AJ Styles as Omos would remain a heel.

AJ Styles Comments On How He Felt About His Run With Omos Ending

AJ Styles was asked about his run as a tag team partner of Omos and commented both on how he felt being put with him and eventually their split.

Omos Becomes An Associate Of MVP

Omos had feuds with bobby lashley and brock lesnar.

Omos defeated AJ Styles weeks later on Monday Night Raw. He received a huge push during the 2022 Men's Royal Rumble match, as he made his Royal Rumble match debut by eliminating 11 Superstars before being eliminated. Heading into WrestleMania 38, Omos began a feud with "The Almighty" Bobby Lashley. Omos suffered his first loss as Lashley beat him at WrestleMania 38. However, the following night on Raw, MVP would turn his back on Bobby Lashley and form an alliance with Omos, thus becoming his new manager. The feud between Lashley and Omos continued into WrestleMania: Backlash, where Omos defeated the former "Almighty" WWE Champion.

After the feud with Lashley, Omos moved on and became a part of the Men's Money in the Bank Ladder match but failed to capture the briefcase. Omos later began a brief feud with Braun Strowman, culminating in a match at Crown Jewel, where Strowman defeated Omos in a grudge match. Leading into 2023, Omos continued his downward spiral , as he entered the 2023 Men's Royal Rumble match at #26 but was eliminated by Braun Strowman shortly thereafter.

Heading into WrestleMania 39, Omos began a rivalry with Brock Lesnar, sending a message to "The Beast Incarnate" by defeating opponents in two minutes or less. Lesnar and Omos wrestled each other at WrestleMania 39 , resulting in a victory for Lesnar.

brock-lesnar-omos-wrestlemania

Brock Lesnar Defeats Omos At WrestleMania 39

It wasn't much of a match, but Brock Lesnar did what he needed to do to defeat Omos in the opening bout of Night 2 of WrestleMania 39.

Omos lost a match against Seth Rollins less than a month later at WrestleMania: Backlash , then would wrestle his last televised match as part of the Slim Jim's Battle Royal at Summer Slam (2023).

Why Has Omos Been Absent From WWE Raw?

Omos has wrestled at wwe live events.

Omos WWE

Omos has been missing in action from WWE television for quite some time. According to a report from Fightful Select , WWE is purposely keeping him off television to build him as more of a special attraction , similar to the days of Andre the Giant, and recently, Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Omos has been working on select WWE Live Events in the meantime.

There are some ideas in mind on how to bring Omos back to WWE television. Don't be surprised if we see Omos make his return in the 2024 Royal Rumble match. Despite a rough 2023, Omos has the appeal to still be a viable star and a monumental attraction for WWE for many years to come.

WWE still has Omos on their payroll , but we have no idea how he will be used in the future. The special attraction for WWE is still waiting in the wings, but he is certainly ready to do whatever WWE asks of him in the meantime.

In April 2022, WWE made the decision to pair Omos with MVP, following the latter’s split from Bobby Lashley. MVP had previously played a key role in guiding Lashley to the WWE Championship as a member of the Hurt Business, and Vince McMahon was looking for similar success when he paired MVP with Omos, a tandem that Omos has admitted that he misses.

Omos had a significant match at WrestleMania 39 against Brock Lesnar, but following April 2023, his appearances on WWE television became sporadic. Despite his limited airtime, Omos continued to perform at live events, honing his skills and improving his craft under MVP’s guidance.

During a K&S WrestleFest virtual signing , MVP went off a bit about Omos, and how WWE has misused him. He brought up Triple H’s thought process about Omos, but also chastised the company for not making money on someone like the Nigerian Giant.

“When Vince called me and Bobby in the office, he said, ‘Hey guys, I want to split you guys up. Bobby, I want you to be a standalone star now. MVP, I want to put you with Omos. I want you to do for Omos what you did for Bobby.’ Those were Vince’s words. ‘Okay.’ I’m not happy about this, but I look forward to the task. Omos has such a huge heart. Literally and figuratively. He really wants to learn, wants to get better. He was an open book. Coachable. We weren’t on TV a lot, but we were on all the live events. I got to watch him week in and week out improve and get better.”

MVP also revealed that he spoke to Triple H about how Omos was being utilized in WWE. According to MVP, Triple H was very clear in his intentions for Omos’ role within the company.

“I talked to Triple H about how he was being used, and Triple H was adamant that he didn’t want him to be another Big Show. He didn’t want him on TV every week. He wanted him to be an attraction and wanted to break him out periodically.”

As for Omos’ future in WWE, MVP expressed uncertainty about the company’s plans for him but remained confident in the potential Omos possesses as a rare talent.

“I don’t know what his status is now. I don’t know what they plan on doing with him, but if you can’t take a legitimate 7-foot 3-inch, 385 pounds….if you can’t make money with a 7-foot 3-inch, 385-pound former basketball player that can move. You don’t see him move a lot because they don’t want him to. When he wants to move, you’d be surprised how well that big man can move. If you can’t make money with that then you’re just an idiot.”

Omos hasn’t competed in a match since his appearance in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal, which took place on the SmackDown before WrestleMania XL . As fans eagerly await his return to the ring, questions remain about how WWE will utilize the towering athlete moving forward.

WWE has featured many special attractions over the years, and that is certainly the role that Omos finds himself in. That being said, he is still absent from WWE television, leaving many to wonder when they will see him again. Since MVP is no longer with the company, Omos certainly won’t have him by his side whenever he reemerges.

What’s your take on Omos’ status in WWE? Do you think that they are wasting his talent? Let us know what you think in the comments section!

Cody Rhodes On One Major Difference As WWE Champion

Cody Rhodes was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 30th, 1985. He is the son of former professional wrestler Dusty Rhodes, and nephew of former professional wrestlers Jerry Sags and Fred Ottman. Rhodes attended Lassiter High School where we wrestled, winning the Georgia State Tournament for his weight class in his junior and senior years.

Early Days (2006-2010)

Rhodes' professional career started in 2006 with Ohio Valley Wrestling after training as a youngster with Al Snow, Danny Davis, Ricky Morton and Randy Orton. In his time at OVW, he won the Southern Tag Team Championship, the Heavyweight Champion and the Television Championship.

In 2007, he made his WWE TV debut with his father (Dusty Rhodes) and Randy Orton in a backstage segment with Randy Orton. His first match was on Raw against Orton, losing via pinfall, and later on he appeared at The Great American Bash to stop Orton from attacking his father. Rhodes' first title came a little later that year when we won the World Tag Team Championship with partner Hardcore Holly. He later turned heel, teaming up with Ted DiBiase to become the new Tag Team Champions. Rhodes and DiBiase would go on to defend and lose the championship a number of times to tag teams such as John Cena and Batista, Kofi Kingstom and CM Punk, and others.

In late 2008, Rhodes, Manu and Orton formed the stable The Legacy. As part of the group Rhodes and DiBiase aided Orton in various feuds, particularly against the McMahon family and Triple H. They competed against DX, winning at Breaking Point but losing at Hell in a Cell. Tensions in the group grew in 2010, culminating in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 26, where Orton defeated both Rhodes and DiBiase, signaling the end of The Legacy.

In 2010, Rhodes was drafted to SmackDown, adopting a new persona and forming a tag team with Drew McIntyre. They would go on to with the Tag Team Championship, but lose it and split.

After suffering a broken nose in 2011, Rhodes adopted a protective mask which became a new signature for him. He matched up against Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 27 and later won the Intercontinental Championship, holding the title for 2/3rds of a year.

Rhodes then teamed up with Damien Sandow to form Team Rhodes Scholors, but after turning against him he reformed an alliance with his brother Goldust, eventually beating The Shield in a no DQ match to become the WWE Tag Team Champions, although he eventually lost it at the 2014 Royal Rumble.

In 2014, Rhodes debuted his new character called Stardust and teamed up with Goldust. Together, they feuded with The Usos and won multiple non-title matches before finally defeating them for the WWE Tag Team Championship at Night of Champions. They then lost the title in a four-way tag team match a month later at Survivor Series.

From there, Rhodes would then work through minor storylines while his losses built up. This eventually led to Rhodes requesting his release from WWE, citing issues with WWE's creative department, mainly about his character and storylines. His release was granted.

The Indies & Others (2016-2018)

After leaving WWE, Rhodes make his was around the independent circuit, competing for Northeast Wrestling, Pro Wrestlin Guerrilla, What Culture Pro Wrestling, Ring of Honor, TNA/Impact, and New Japan Pro Wrestling. He won various championships during these years, including the GFW NEX*GEN Championship, The WCPW Internet Champions, the NEW Heavyweight Championship, the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, the ROH World Championship and more.

During his time at NJPW, his 'American Nightmare" persona would appear for the first time.

AEW (2018-2022)

All Elite Wresting (AEW) was officially unveiled on January 1, 2019 at which time Cody Rhodes, along with The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and others wre announced as Executive Vice Presidents of On-Air Talent. At AEW's first even titled Double or Nothing, Rhodes beat his brother Dustin in a match that was dubbed "Match of the Year" by Pro Wrestling Illustrated.

In August 2019, Cody defeated Shawn Spears at All Out, earning a shot at the AEW World Championship against Chris Jericho at Full Gear. After being ambushed by Jericho's faction, Cody vowed never to challenge for the title again if he lost, which he did when MJF betrayed him. Cody would seek revenge, but eventually be defeated by MJF at the Revolution PPV in February 2020.

Then in March, AEW introduced the TNT Championship. Rhodes participated in the tournament to win the inaugural championship. After defeating Shawn Spears and Darby Allin, Cody won the title by defeating Lance Archer at Double or Nothing. Cody successfully defended the championship against several challengers before losing it to Brodie Lee in August, taking a brief leave before returning to reclaim the title in a Dog Collar match in October. Cody later lost the championship to Darby Allin at Full Gear. Cody won his third TNT Championship on Christmas Day in 2021 after defeating Sammy Guevara. However, he lost the title in a ladder match just a month later.

Shortly after the loss, Cody left AEW due to contract disagreements, with Cody later citing personal reasons for his departure.

WWE Return (2022-Present)

In March 2022, Rhodes re-signed with WWE, making his return at WrestleMania 38 and defeating Seth Rollins. While feuding with Rollins, Rhodes' story of winning the WWE Championship (that his father never held) began. After suffering a serious pectoral injury at Hell in a Cell and returning in 2023 after a successful surgery, Rhode's would win the Royal Rumble giving him the opportunity to challenge Roman Reigns for the title at WrestleMania 39. Rhodes would be defeated after interference from Solo Sikoa.

As his journey continued, he would form a tag team with Jey Uso, winning the WWE Tag Team Championship but losing it just nine days later. in 2024, Rhodes won his second consecutive Royal Rumble and would eventually go on to challenge Roman Reigns for the title at WrestleMania 40. On the second night of WrestleMania 40 under Bloodline rules, and with interference and support from a star-studded lineup that included The Rock, John Cena, and The Undertaker, Rhodes' story would eventually come full circle as he won the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Rhodes would then move to SmackDown, defending his title numerous times at Backlash, Clash at the Castle, SummerSlam and Bash in Berlin.

Omos responds to rumors of his WWE release

follow icon

WWE Superstar Omos has responded to a rumor that recently circulated on social media. The rumor stated that WWE released The Nigerian Giant.

It's been quite a long time since WWE used the behemoth on TV in a major feud under the Triple H regime. The last time he was used in a significant capacity was way back in mid-2023 when he faced Seth Rollins in a singles match at Backlash. He lost the match and has since been used mostly on WWE 's live events.

A rumor recently began making the rounds on Wrestling Twitter, stating that Omos had been released by the Stamford-based promotion. The WWE Superstar noticed the rumor, which was seemingly circulated by a bunch of troll accounts, and decided to make it clear that it wasn't true.

Omos on his goals for 2024

Earlier this year, The Nigerian Giant appeared on the Battleground podcast. He discussed a string of topics, including his goals for 2024. Check out what he said:

“Yeah, I think obviously, the one coming up is the big Super Bowl of WWE. So hopefully I get to have a match at WrestleMania. That is always my goal every year to be on that card. Because WrestleMania is a dream for some but man, it’s an honor for me whenever I get to be out there, you know, be with the fans and just absorb the atmosphere of about 80,000-100,000 people, there’s nothing like that. It’s always my biggest goal every year, absolutely.”

He took on Brock Lesnar at last year's WrestleMania and lost to The Beast Incarnate. At WrestleMania 38 in 2022, he took on Bobby Lashley and suffered a loss to The All Mighty. Unfortunately, he didn't compete at The Show of Shows this year.
