• Erasmus Mundus PhD Scholarships

Written by Mark Bennett

Please note : Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates are no longer offered. Instead, this funding has been replaced by MSCA scholarships . We've kept this page to explain how the EMJD scheme used to work, but the information here is no longer updated.

Erasmus Mundus is a programme funded by the European Commission. Its aims are to encourage mobility (long-term and short-term) of students and staff; to attract the best talents to Europe and; to promote European higher education worldwide. Erasmus Mundus also aims to encourage European institutions to team up with other universities in Europe and beyond as well as developing partnerships with other educational organisations and placement providers. It is completely separate from the Erasmus exchange programmes that you may have experienced at undergraduate level. The fundamental differences are that most of the mobility opportunities are for postgraduate students and that the periods of mobility are not just non-graduating but are also for full degrees.

What does it mean for PhD students?

Institutions themselves apply for Erasmus Mundus funding as part of consortia/partnerships which will in time award double, multiple or joint PhD degrees. These groups of institutions have to demonstrate how they can provide an educational experience and training which they would not be able to offer on their own. Once a consortium has been selected, PhD programmes and study abroad (non-graduating) opportunities will be advertised by the consortium directly. Students can then apply to take part as well as applying for scholarships. Self-funded students can also take part in these programmes.

Erasmus Mundus has two streams, the handily-named, Action 1 and Action 2:

Action 1 consists of Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates (EMJD) focusing on a research theme (which can be interdisciplinary) at PhD level. Its characteristics are:

  • Consortium of universities including at least 3 European different countries
  • It can include non-EU partners
  • Scholarships for Third Country and European Students to undertake doctoral programmes (research and research training)

Action 2 is delivered on a wider-scale of academic mobility (i.e. it is not linked to a specific PhD, but open to almost all study level) between Europe and “Third countries” within a designated region. Scholarships are available to support both non-graduating/short-term mobility and degree-seeking students.

Advantages of Erasmus Mundus

Action 1 allows PhD students to undertake a structured training programme adapted to their research areas as well as benefiting from research expertise and facilities of at least 2 European countries (sometimes also non-EU countries). Action 2 aims to offer opportunities to students from parts of the world which have been identified by the European Commission, creating consortia of European institutions and local institutions to develop the research capacity of that region and to develop lasting relationships between institutions. Full PhDs or periods of study abroad are undertaken in one institution.

Opportunities for doctoral studies

EMJD will last 3 or 4 years and will cover all subject areas. For example, EUROSPIN is a European doctoral programme in Neuroinformatics while EDLE is the European Doctorate in Law and Economics. To find out which research areas benefit from EMJD and which have an open scholarship competition, the best source is the European Commission website .

Action 2 programme

A list of programmes in each region is available on the European Commission website .

Each programme has a limited number of studentships for each “target group” and for EU or Third country students. Action 2 may provide:

  • Opportunities for doctoral students from nominated institutions in a defined region of the world to come to Europe or EU students to study in that region. (Target group 1). These students attend institutions which are part of a consortium to complement their training and research experience via periods of research abroad (6-18 months)
  • A small number of full-PhD opportunities (up to 36 months) for students from that region but who are not in the nominated institutions (Target group 2).
  • Opportunities to help “ candidates in vulnerable situations, resulted from social and/or political reasons " (Target group 3).

How to apply – A step-by-step guide

For Action 1 and 2, eligible candidates must apply through individual programme websites. Once you are selected, you will be contacted by the lead university of the consortium (in the case of EMJD) or your host university (in the case of Action 2).

Step 1: Choose between Action 1 (EMMC) or Action 2
Action 1 Action 2
Step 2: Identify the right programme for you (subject area and participating universities) Step 2: Check your eligibility to take part.
Step 3: Find out what the application guidelines and selection criteria are. Step 3: Find out which types of mobility are available.

Step 8: Apply online (via the programme application form or the lead university's).

Scholarships and self-funding options

PhD scholarships will be available and deadlines are normally around November-February prior to the year you intend to start. Students do not have to pay for tuition fees and if an EMJD student is studying in institutions with different fee rates, this will not have any effect on the scholarship awarded. The scholarships will include:

  • Tuition fees, participation costs (including insurance coverage).
  • Travel cost contribution.
  • Installation cost contribution.
  • A monthly allowance (corrected for each country the students go to, to allow for differences in local cost of living.
  • If applicable, additional funding may be available for students who bring their spouse and children with them.

Self-funded students are also able to take part in EMJD but must consider the additional costs involved in such schemes (for example, travel costs and attendance at compulsory events/courses).

Training, periods of mobility and language of instructions

Students will be provided with a learning agreement which is specific to them and covers everything from the duration of mobility, lead university, examination procedures to the learning outcomes and language of instruction. In the case of EMJD and because joint-degrees may be awarded, an additional student agreement may also have to be signed by the student, the supervisors and the institutions to ensure that all is in place to allow the joint award of one PhD (in case there are regulations in individual institutions which are incompatible).

Erasmus Mundus programmes focus on training the next generation of researchers to give them awareness of the benefits of transnational research. These programmes include aspects of transferable skills and research training, as well as opportunities to attend consortium/research cooperation activities or consortium conferences, providing a well-rounded doctoral education, supported by groups of experts in the field and by resources relevant to the subject area across several institutions.

Erasmus Mundus alumni are part of a community of scholars which share an experience of study abroad. Students within each programme (which last for up to 5 years) will also benefit from being part of a group of alumni who are united around a subject area (and may become colleagues in the future) or who have experience of a region/country in common.

Erasmus+ Doctoral Mobility (PHD)

In the new program generation of the Erasmus+ program (2021-2027), the opportunities for stays abroad have once again been greatly expanded.

Depending on their status, doctoral students have had the following options to go abroad since 2021:

  • Student status If you are a student at the Viadrina, you can apply for Erasmus+ funding for:
  • Long-term mobility with a duration of 2 - 12 months (optional with virtual phase)
  • Short-term mobility with a duration of 5 - 30 days (optional with virtual phase)
  • Participation in a BIP (with mandatory virtual phase)

You can find more information about the Blended Intensive Programs (BIP) here .

More information on staff mobility can be found  here .

Information on funding internships under Erasmus+ is available from the  Career Center .

Who can be funded?

Viadrina doctoral students can be funded as part of the Erasmus+ program.

What will be funded?

Funding is provided for stays for study purposes at one of our partner universities , for which at least 3 ECTS credit points are awarded.

Inquiries regarding a stay at another foreign university (which is not a partner of ours), please contact Maria Krug-Firstbrook .

Currently, only stays in an Erasmus+ programme country can be funded at the European University Viadrina.

Furthermore Erasmus+ KA107/171 stays are possible in some Erasmus+ partner countries .

Duration of funding

  • In the case of long-term mobility , the length of stay is 2 – 12 months.
  • In the case of short-term mobility , the length of stay is 5 – 30 days.

In addition, there is the possibility of combining each mobility with a virtual component.

The application for funding in the Erasmus+ mobility program can only be submitted at the Viadrina. A direct application to the EU Commission or the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is not possible.

Application deadline

1. Classic (long-term) mobility (2 - 12 months)

If you would like to spend one or two semesters at one of our partner universities , please apply as part of the regular selection process from November of each year for a stay abroad from the following winter semester. Further information on the application, in particular the application deadlines and information on the application process , can be found on our websites .

If you would like to spend a stay (from 2 months) at one of our partner universities outside of a semester, please contact Maria Krug-Firstbrook with at least 3 months notice .

2. Short-term mobilities (5 - 30 days)

There is no application deadline, we allocate the funds on an ongoing basis. Whether the funding can be granted depends on the available budget and the number of applicants. If you are interested, contact contact Maria Krug-Firstbrook , preferably with at least 3 months' notice.

As soon as you have our approval, you can submit the funding documents.

In the case of mobility for study purposes, the relevant Erasmus+ documents must be completed. You can find all documents in our download area here .

Before departure

The Learning Agreement must be signed by the departmental coordinators of the Viadrina and the host university before departure. In addition, the Grant agreement must be completed and signed by the doctoral candidate

During the stay abroad

Based on the grant agreement, up to 70% of the allocated mobility grant is paid out. In order to be able to pay out the mobility grant, the bank account information of the applicant must be given in the Grant Agreement. A cash payment is not possible.

The stay abroad must be confirmed on site by the host university. To do this, the Letter of confirmation must be completed and signed by the host university. Furthermore, the Learning Agreement must be signed by the host university.

After returning

You must submit the following documents to the Viadrina within the first four weeks after your return:

  • Letter of Confirmation – in the original
  • Learning Agreement – as a copy if there is no original

If achievements have been made at the university:

  • Transcript of Records – In some cases, the partner university sends the ToR directly to us. In this case, we will inform you about it.
  • Online participant report – You have 30 days to complete the online report required by the EU. The link will be sent to you automatically by the EU database. Please also check your spam emails.

You will only receive the remaining 30% of your funding once the report has been received and all the necessary documents have been checked. If you do not complete the report within 30 days, the EU reserves the right to reclaim the amount already paid to you.

  • Long-term mobilities The funding rates for classic long-term stays abroad for study purposes can be found here . The Erasmus+ mobility grants are currently divided into three country groups.
  • Short-term mobilities The funding rates for short-term stays abroad for study purposes can be found  here . The financial support for short term mobility is calculated on a daily basis.

Erasmus Mundus

Erasmus Mundus was launched in 2004 as a higher education cooperation programme funded by the European Commission and continued until 2013. Beginning in 2014, Erasmus Mundus became part of the Erasmus+ funding scheme umbrella which lasted until 2020. The Erasmus+ scheme was renewed for the period of 2021-2027 and is expected to triple the number of participants. While the Erasmus Mundus Joint PhD degrees no longer exist, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programmes continue to be offered under the umbrella of Erasmus+.

Untitled_Artwork 13.png

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs)

Are joint Master level study programmes carried out by consortia of European universities.

Provide a number of scholarships for students from the whole world to study in Europe.

Give the students a chance to study in at least two European countries.

Offer multiple or joint Master degrees at the end of successful completion of the programme.

Traveling

Erasmus Mundus degrees have earned a reputation as highly competitive masters and doctoral (not available any more) programmes that offer students the opportunity to study at several European and partner universities, invariably leading to joint or multiple university degrees.

For a full overview of all EMJMD courses, see here .

Science Class

Are you interested in applying for an EMJMD programme?

EMA values community building, and the Association's members include newly accepted students, current students and alumni. EMA also has a strong connection with the EC, EACEA, EU Delegations, consortia and other key stakeholders.

EMA runs Erasmus+ workshop, with focus on EMJMDs to promote Higher Education in Europe, through its various mobility programmes. As a general rule, EMA does not advise on or engage in application processes, decisions and internal rules and regulations set by the management of EMJMD consortia, or their universities.

EMA organizes pre-departure orientations and gatherings for incoming students in collaboration with EU Delegations. EMA Country Representatives offer local support to students who are preparing for their EMJMD journey and Programme Representatives represent their EMJMD course and can be contacted with specific questions. As a general rule, EMA does not advise on or engage in visa application processes or decisions.

Once a student has been officially accepted for an EMJMD she/he can join the EMA community and benefit further from the invaluable support that the community offers. EMA remains available to members of the community as and when needed, throughout their studies and beyond.

Erasmus+ doctoral student mobility

As a doctoral student, you have many opportunities to gain international experience during your doctoral studies. You can, for example, take courses, participate in staff training or collect data for your thesis. You can also teach at a partner university.

Exchanges carried out in Europe (EU/EEA) within the framework of Erasmus+, the EU's education programme, are supported with scholarships. How the scholarship amount is calculated, and the size of the scholarship depends on the type of activity you carry out and where you go. The scholarship is a contribution to the costs for travel and subsistence that occur in connection with your mobility.

If you want to go to an institution/organisation within the EU/EEA, you can apply directly for an Erasmus+ scholarship if you meet all the requirements/conditions. Mobility to LERU and EUGLOH member universities, as well as European U21 universities, is encouraged. Currently, there is also the possibility to register your interest in mobility to countries outside the EU/EEA. Read more under “Call 2024 for mobility outside the EU/EEA”.

Below is a summary of the opportunities within the Erasmus+ programme. As a doctoral student, you are both a student and a staff member and can therefore apply for scholarships that refer to both groups. Which mobility you should choose depends on the purpose of the trip.

Courses, data/material collection, thesis preparation activity (Erasmus+ mobility for studies)

As a doctoral student at Lund University, you can take courses, collect data and material for your thesis or participate in other thesis preparation activities at a partner university. The studies must be full-time at one and the same university and for a continuous period of time.

Erasmus+ mobility for studies must be carried out within the framework of an Erasmus+ exchange agreement (Inter-Institutional Agreement). Regardless of whether you register for courses or do thesis preparation activities, a Learning Agreement must be signed.

More information about Erasmus+mobility for studies within the EU/EEA and link to application (Erasmus database)

The information on this page mainly applies to Lund University's bachelor's and master's students who are nominated for an exchange within the EU/EEA and to the United Kingdom and Switzerland. In addition to that, the following information is relevant for doctoral students:

  • have a supervisor at Lund University
  • study full-time during the exchange
  • live in the host country for the entire study period (also applicable for exchange studies in Denmark)

Also consider the following:

  • There must be an exchange agreement between Lund University and the receiving institution. You upload the confirmation from your faculty's international office that an agreement exists in the Erasmus database under "Other documents". Contact your faculty's international office for more information
  • Your supervisor, your host and you must draw up a Learning Agreement. Download the template (utbyten.se) Upload the signed Learning Agreement in the Erasmus database under "Other documents".
  • You are strongly advised to have a supervisor at the receiving institution, although this is not a formal requirement.

The length of the exchange period

The physical study period can last for 5–30 days or 2–12 months.

Scholarship amount

In the case of a short, physical mobility of 5–30 days:.

  • Days 1–14: 79 euros per day.
  • Days 15–30: 56 euros per day.
  • Outside the EU/EEA: daily amount plus a travel grant (no travel grant for mobility to the United Kingdom and Switzerland).

For longer mobility of 2–12 months:

  • Within the EU/EEA including United Kingdom and Switzerland: between 510 and 560 euros per month.
  • Outside the EU/EEA: 700 euros per month plus a travel grant.

If you have a disability or have children, you can receive extra support in the form of Top-up.

Field work, data/material collection, research experience (Erasmus+ traineeship)

The traineeship can take place at a company, an organisation, a university or a research and training centre and can be carried out during and after the doctoral studies.

  • During the doctoral studies: The content of the traineeship must be relevant to your doctoral studies. You can use the traineeship for, for example, fieldwork, data collection and to gather material for your thesis.
  • After the doctoral studies (“recent graduate”): You can use the traineeship, for example, to gain work and research experience. You must apply for your Erasmus+ traineeship during the last semester. The entire traineeship period must take place within 12 months of the defence. A doctoral student who has obtained his or her degree can no longer apply for a traineeship as a “recent graduate”.

More information about Erasmus+ traineeship mobility within the EU/EEA and link to application (Erasmus database) The information on this page mainly applies to Lund University's bachelor's and master's students who are going on exchange within the EU/EEA including United Kingdom and Switzerland. Internship for the characterization of GABA-producing lactic acid bacteria with biotechnological potential for the production of functional fermented foods

The group of Molecular Microbiology (@MolMicro_LAB ) is looking for a full-time highly motivated Erasmus+ student (master or PhD) to work at the Dairy Research Institute (IPLA-CSIC, Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain) (@iplaCSIC; http://www.ipla.csic.es/ ) for a 6 to 12 months internship. We are flexible on the start date.

One of our research lines is focused in the physiology, genetics and the technological properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that produce gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), and the assessment of their biotechnological potential for the production of functional fermented foods that could provide health benefits to the consumers. LAB are a group of microorganisms that are essential in the food processing industry as they are closely involved in the manufacturing of a wide range of fermented foods (dairy products, fermented meat, fish, and vegetables) and beverages (cider, beer, wine, etc.). The metabolic activity of LAB determine the quality of fermented foods (organoleptic, nutritional and functional characteristics), and also contribute to their preservation. In addition, many BAL strains have acquired special relevance as probiotics as they provide benefits to human health. Some BAL can produce GABA, a bioactive natural compound that possess many pharmacological properties beneficial for human health, e.g. reduction of stress and anxiety, prevention of diabetes and blood-pressure lowering effects. Due to this, the food industry is showing an increasing interest to use GABA-producing LAB for developing functional foods enriched with GABA that improve our health and wellness.

The Erasmus+ student will join the members of the group and will provide them technical support to characterize the  physiological, genetic and technological properties of GABA-producing LAB of industrial interest. The applicant must have a scientific background in microbiology, molecular biology or biotechnology; laboratory work experience will be positively evaluated.
