Hate people copy other people's style. My strengths is to draw and use my imagination my weakness to seam and handicraft.

Why I Want To Study Fashion

Fashion is a miraculous world of fantasy and hard work that I would be thrilled to enter, and the studies at the XXX could open the gate to this exciting world for me.

I opted for fashion design as a major as I have always been attracted by the power of transformation that trendy clothing gives a person. I enjoyed inventing clothing for my dolls when I was a child, and enjoyed seeing the same old plaything take on a different look each time I gave her different apparel. I also loved to see my mom and aunts put on trendy things and turn into fabulous-looking princesses.

When going to in high school, I most of all enjoyed drawing and painting. I love using a rich palette of colors in my works. My skills were often awarded with prizes in high school. Among the various courses we were offered at school, my favorite ones were the two fashion classes I took in one of my school years. I scored well in both of them. Overall, I used to be a good student, and the school administration always placed my picture in the lobby of the school.

I have a multi-cultural background that combines very different experiences. I first came to the US when I was three years old. Later I went back to China when I was in junior high school. Thus I combine two different backgrounds, supported by the knowledge of the two languages: English and Chinese.

In China, I kept pursuing a career in fashion that is my priority dream and aspiration. I had a course in drawing. In the US I added to my experience working in a fabric company in Manhattan. This was a great experience too, sharing the vibrant life of the New York City fashion world.

My dream is to become a professional fashion designer and be able to say a new world in apparel making. At the moment I enjoy designing my own clothing, as it gives me the possibility to stand out from the crowd and differ in style from my peers. I am bored by the people who would always wear the same style and fashion and enjoy adding fresh ideas to my wardrobe.

I believe in my ability to be creative and to produce the garments that will be unique in their own style and trend and will grab the attention of the most famous designers in the world. A good imagination is my personal strength, and the one that will lay the foundation for my professional expertise. In my view, the value of the designer's works lies in their originality, their difference from others. I dislike seeing the works of the artists who merely copycat other people's styles.

On the other hand, my weakness is the lack of skills in seaming and remote idea of handicraft, but I believe these drawbacks can be overcome by hard work that I am ready to put in as I am really determined to pursuing a career path in fashion.

I am following what the New York designers are working on now, my favorite being Honk Kong-born artist Vivienne Tam. She has received quite a multicultural upbringing as she was born in Canton, brought up in Hong Kong, and eventually settled in New York. She has made a name in the fashion world by being innovative, and having her own distinctive style. Vivienne first became famous with her signature collection of Eastern inspired clothing with a modern edge on the New York stage in 1994. After that, East-meets-West style became her trademark and distinctive feature. Pieces of her now classic Buddha collection of 1997 ultimately became part of the permanent archives of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Like Vivienne Tam, I want to single myself out from the rest of the designers, and establish my own style that will win acclaim in the fashion world.

Sample Personal Statement Design and Textile

Shivers run down my spine as I am transported back to the darkest day of my life. As a toddler, I witnessed something so disquieting that I froze at that moment. I witnessed something so raw that, ever since, my impressionable mind has been in a frenzy – unable to recover from it. Then, I saw my mother trying to set herself on fire.

Standing helplessly in one corner, I was caught in a daze. Seeing your mother trying to give up on life like that is beyond disturbing. No one can ever understand where I come from as they have not walked my path.

However, the same past has transformed me into the strong individual I am today. Since that day, I decided I could not be at the mercy of a ruthless man, for my mother was my father. This epiphany gave me a goal. To become an independent woman and survive without being dependent on anyone.

That night something magical happened. Our guardian angel helped my mother reconsider her weak choice. We escaped the moment and moved back to my maternal grandparent’s house, leaving behind my father. I have never met him since.

Being a single parent, my mother struggled to make a living for her three infant children. She fought with all her might to provide us with every possible comfort. She taught us that, as do winters, springs find their way. Her aspiration has always been to make a better life for us.

Despite all the dark empty holes in her life, she taught me to make drawings and fill them with beautiful colors. And in art, I have found my escape. I draw my mind. The sun comes up every morning. Every day is a new beginning to a life full of different shades of hue. It’s charismatic. If you focus on the bright things, the dark emptiness disappears, the roots start to grow, and little buds of happiness form.

That’s why even in conversations, my mind wanders to what I want to draw next and how to fill it with colors. I am just optimistic that life will lead me to great heights. These are the things I have learned from being raised by a strong mother. A strong mother gives you the confidence to be who you want. You do what you want and aren’t afraid of expressing yourself.

In my case, I draw and construct designs. My mother has moved mountains, and so will I. Being a hardworking lady, my mother wasn’t always by my side. She worked tirelessly, so I used to spend most of my time with my grandfather. He, too, was a man of great wisdom. Unfortunately, by the age of 9, I lost him. I was broken and shattered. That was the moment I froze again. I had spent most of my childhood with him. He always encouraged me to grow and pursue my dreams to every possible limit. My life experiences represent my turmoil, resilience, and strength to conquer. I aspire to change my vision into reality now.

My philosophy behind Fashion and Textile design is more than designing clothes. The design never remains the same; it changes with the environment, just like life changes every minute. Some like to call it a fad. For me, every single design is a story to be found, heard, and felt. I speak through lines, designs, and colors. I channel my art into designs and fashion silhouettes. Fashion is beauty, enthrallment, and secrecy. Fashion is my passion. Hence, my work is a depiction of myself.

I have done my undergrad in Textile and Clothing. The degree comprised fashion illustrations inspired by drapery and designs that evoke emotions. The way it induces diverse sentiments is beautiful. I want to communicate different emotions to people and untangle the anonymity of how clothing can modify the environment.

My true passion for fashion flourished while doing my thesis in the final year of my undergrad. I developed color-therapeutic Adaptive Clothing for children suffering from cerebral palsy because I feel that color, design, and lines have the power to heal.

Currently, I’m working as an assistant fashion designer at Zara. At work, one of my responsibilities is to visualize ideas and transform them into tangible women’s fashion apparel. In addition, I develop fashion silhouettes for different fabrications and technical specifications of fashion cutlines using photoshop. Teamwork has helped me elicit sources of inspiration for seasonal range collections. This experience has made me confident and helped me contribute to a world where colors and designs speak of people’s minds. It’s an inspiring experience to know that a part of me lives in their stories.

This might be a chance for me to identify my local culture on an international platform. This will bring uniqueness and diversity to the entrepreneurial world of my country, where chauvinists oppress women. Being a strong woman, my mother has been an asset to me; it’s time for me to become an asset to other women.

I seek a long-term career where I can articulate my artistic talent and passion for fashion and open my mind by exploring the skills I could never do in any other field. My experience was unforgettable, and that surely made me what I’m today. I have armored myself in it. If I get this chance, I can gain a career that I’ll love for the rest of my life without regret.

PARSONS the New School Admissions Essay Example($120K Scholarship- Fashion Design) 2018–2019

Sharonyeunkim

Sharonyeunkim

(A note from the student): Hello everyone! My name is Sharon Yeun Kim. If you are planning to apply to Parsons and are looking for an essay example, here is mine. I am currently a sophomore here (2019–2020). Last year, I was accepted to Parsons with a $120,000 dollar scholarship for fashion design. To help other students, here is the essay that got me in.

Constantly pushing to expand the capabilities of design, the New School is different from other art and design schools. At the same time, the New School explores these possibilities in a sustainable manner. I too believe that “good design” encompasses integrity in its intentions, as well as ethical delivery in production. Therefore, it would make sense to attend an institution that would teach me to build upon strategies for such quality. I also believe that innovators should collaborate, thus to maximize the potential of their ideas. Not just limited to designers, however artists, historians and even businessmen at the New School are free to share their opinions in a single space to provide a rich, learning environment.

Before one adopts any practice, they must possess the philosophy of the teacher. In this case, the institution. The New School stands to challenge the status quo. I too believe in this philosophy. It is because I realize that following a standard limits the potential of a better future. For example, when I was a child, I, as well as every other student was taught to believe in this one model of success. It involved excelling at math, getting straight A’s, and becoming a doctor instead of encouraging us to be our unique selves and follow our dreams. This issue is reflected in my piece, “Potential”. Essentially, I created a mock textbook that contains “lessons” of how to be successful. I sarcastically presented my discontent with public education to implant the same notion to the audience. Witnesses can be inspired, so society itself can participate in this mission to improve the school system. When I challenged this status quo in 11th grade, I was liberated to become whatever I chose. Instead of a doctor, I became an artist. This was a much better position for me. However, I would have not known unless I went beyond the boundary. Another example is based on my anxiety. Reflecting back, the anxiety I faced during my struggle inspired my Parsons Challenge. I created with the intent to raise discussion about the ignorance of mental health. Although uncomfortable to discuss, disturbing this boundary allows the possibility to change our perspective of mental illness. This is what the New School is all about. The New School is about analyzing the world around us, and not letting the boundaries determine our future, but breaking them to improve it. From challenging the status quo, I, as well as the New School, create to allow better possibilities. To study at a college that not only shares my values but nourish a rich community of thinkers alike, I see myself collaborating with my peers to design and experiment towards this principle.

In my mission to further The New School’s values, I believe the best area to study is fashion design. Fashion is an integral part of modern day culture while being the second most polluting industry in the world. The industry itself impacts almost every other market there is! Therefore, it is efficient to integrate this industry with ethical practices. For example, I see myself creating clothes that are durable, multi-functional and cost efficient in response to the fast fashion market. To complement this idea, I advocate for the production of garments and textiles by local manufacturers and not through the exploitation of human labor. Hence, the various facets of good, honest design will reach to the extent of fast fashion’s. All in all, by transmitting these ideas into products we are already familiar with, I imagine these ideals being dispersed through articles everyone can adopt.

I also do private college portfolio tutoring in NYC as well as Toronto in addition to posting fashion career advice on my blog. I also show my full portfolio on my Youtube channel: “Sharon Yeun Kim Parsons Portfolio”.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, tips for writing my fit application essay.

Hey there! I'm working on my application to the Fashion Institute of Technology and I'm a bit lost on how to approach the essay. Has anyone here been through the same process? Can you guys share any tips, ideas, or experiences you had with writing your FIT application essay? Thanks a lot!

Hello! Writing your application essay for the Fashion Institute of Technology can be both exciting and intimidating, but it's essential to let your own voice and experiences shine through. Here are some tips and ideas for crafting a strong FIT application essay:

1. Understand the prompt: Carefully read and analyze the essay prompt. Typically, FIT asks you to discuss both why you are interested in FIT as a school and your chosen major. Make sure you address both of these aspects in your response.

2. Showcase your passion: Share your passion for fashion and your motivation to study at FIT. Use anecdotes or experiences that demonstrate your dedication to the industry or a particular aspect of it, such as design, marketing, or technology.

3. Highlight your relevant experiences: Discuss any experiences you have that are relevant to the fashion industry or your desired major, such as internships, extracurriculars, personal projects, or coursework. It's important to not list them all out as a resume — you can do that in other parts of your application — but explain what you enjoy about these experiences and what you've learned about yourself and your interest in fashion through them.

4. Exhibit your knowledge of FIT: Make sure your essay demonstrates that you have researched FIT and understand what makes it distinctive from other fashion institutions. The more specific and targeted your examples are, the more you will stand out. Remember to not just name-drop aspects of FIT that you find interesting, but explain how they relate to your interests and how you will engage with them as a student.

5. Give yourself ample time: Don't wait until the last minute to write your essay. Start brainstorming and outlining your essay well in advance, leaving yourself enough time to revise and perfect it before the application deadline.

Remember, the essay is an opportunity for you to showcase your story, passion, and experiences as they relate to the fashion industry and FIT specifically. Don't be afraid to let your personality shine through, and make sure to proofread and revise multiple times. Good luck!

Free Fashion Essay Examples & Topics

The way a person presents says a lot about their character. And everyone has their style. However, not everyone is fashionable. Fashion is the popular and prevailing way of dressing, which often follows particular trends in a given era. Unlike style, it is characterized by change. Fashion follows cycles and constantly evolves together with society.

What is fashion, if not a form of art? Of course, it is a tool and a statement. But very often, fashion trends are reflective of their time. They are influenced by real-life events, politics, values, and socioeconomic changes. Fashion culture reveals human culture, and this is why it is so important.

If you require help writing a fashion essay, you’ve come to the right place. Our experts have prepared tips and tricks that will be useful in your academic paper. Below, you will also find fashion essay examples and topics.

Structure-wise, a fashion essay is no different from any other academic paper. However, some tips and tricks will make your job significantly easier.

Here are recommendations on how to improve your essay on fashion:

  • Pick an idea that is not too broad. It is best to avoid exploring general topics. A question like “Is it very important nowadays to be in trend?” is not specific enough for you to examine. If your title is too broad, then you won’t be able to include details and specifics. The best topics are always narrowed down to allow room for insight.
  • Check whether you can research your topic. It is good to have a precise idea of what you want to write. However, make sure that you aren’t backing yourself into a corner. If your topic turns out to be too narrow, you will not be able to do any research. This is why it is a good idea to check for credible sources while you are still researching.
  • Form arguments and find examples from the start. It is a good idea to start thinking of your thesis statement once you have settled on a topic. It is a central argument of your paper, and our thesis generator can formulate it for you. Of course, you will need to back it up with evidence. Collect your facts from the very beginning and keep everything organized for efficiency.
  • Outline your fashion essay. Just like always, you will need an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Jot down topic sentences for each of your body paragraphs before you begin writing. Outlining your essay simplifies the process and makes your task easier.
  • Make sure that the content of your paper fits the topic. Now that you have everything that you need in front of you, it is time to revise. Fashion is a complex subject, and it is easy to get carried away. The most critical thing for you is to stay on topic and not drift off into irrelevant questions.
  • Double-check the instructions before you begin writing. It is a good idea to take another look at the assessment criteria. This will give you a general understanding of what is expected of you. If you feel like you are heading in the wrong direction, double-check your instructions.
  • Use a catchy title to capture the readers’ attention. Since fashion is about expression, your essay has to live up to the standards. This will lend more credibility to your work. Show your passion by spending some extra time on your title to make it stand out.

Are you writing a fashion trend essay? Or maybe you want to tackle early 2000s fashion? Or maybe, you still have no idea what you will be writing. In that case, here we have created an extensive list of fashion topics .

Otherwise, you can check the following ideas:

Fashion Design AAS Essay

Please respond thoughtfully and note that your answer does not replace the essay that you are required to submit as part of your FIT/SUNY application.

In 250 words or less, provide an example of when your point of view differed from a teacher or employer during an evaluation of your performance. How did you handle the situation?

Project One:  Sportswear Coordinates (formerly Mix-and-Match Designs) (3-6 images)

Sportswear is an American term used to describe clothing consisting of separate pieces, such as jackets, trousers, sweaters, skirts, and shirts, that can be worn individually or in various combinations. Sportswear is also known as Ready-to-Wear and includes a wide range of market segments, including Streetwear and Athleisure.

Create a mood/inspiration page for the following sportswear designs. The mood page should be an image that has inspired you to create the designs below. Include a  short  written explanation of how the designs have been inspired by the mood page image, and list the  destination and season of the year when your designs will be worn .

Draw original garment designs in color using the medium of your choice. Show sportswear separates that work together. Imagine that you are designing a wardrobe of 4 pieces that worn together in various combinations could be worn for different situations. As one example, you have a customer who must pack lightly but must be prepared to dress appropriately for a business meeting, a casual lunch and an important dinner date.

  • Design a jacket
  • Design a top (use the top twice, once on each figure)
  • Design a pant
  • Design a skirt

Sketch your designs in color on two hand drawn figures. Do not trace or use a template for your figures. Include back views of the garments on an additional figure or as a flat sketch. For portfolio submission, scan or photograph real fabric swatches (not “digital”) and identify those fabrics (fabric weave/knit and fiber; for example, wool gabardine, silk charmeuse, cotton gauze, etc.) on the front of the sketches. (If you are currently unable to obtain real fabric swatches due to COVID-19 restrictions, you may use “digital” swatches. Be sure to identify the fabrics [fabric weave/knit and fiber].) Submit 3 to 6 images for this project.

Project Two: Fashion Design Artwork (4-8 images)

Submit four to eight sketches of your original fashion design artwork on figures that you have drawn yourself. For one image, show your initial design thinking process in pencil sketch. For the rest, choose your own materials. Express your creativity, style, and variety. Do not include fine art samples; only fashion design artwork should be submitted. Edit your portfolio. Do not submit more than is requested.

Draw original designs in color. Use the medium of your choice. Note: original artwork can be computer generated, but not required. Design sketches are to be on full-length fashion figures with back views.

Include scanned or digital photo of actual 2” x 2” fabric swatches on the front of each sketch. Identify the type of fabric (e.g. 100% wool gabardine).

(If you are currently unable to obtain real fabric swatches due to COVID-19 restrictions, you may use “digital” swatches. Be sure to identify the fabrics [fabric weave/knit and fiber].)

Write 2 sentences for each image to explain inspiration or your thought process.

Project Three: Sewing Project (4-9 Photographs)

Submit photographs of two or three garments you have sewn (include front and back views). Samples are to demonstrate knowledge of construction. Originality, creativity, and design aesthetic are valued. Photograph the clothing on a person or dress mannequin. Garments can be created from commercial patterns or you can develop your own patterns or drape the design. Garment examples must be sewn. Do not show existing garments that have just been decorated.

Take photographs of the front and back of each garment, a third photograph may be taken to showcase special details on a garment. Submit up to nine photographs for this project.

Provide 11-23 items. Images (up to 5MB each) and PDFs (up to 10MB each)

Admission Fashion Designer Essay Sample

Essay on fashion design and what does it mean to be a designer.

I honestly wanted to be a model when I was small. First, it was fashionable; second, I sincerely believed it would contribute to my appearance. Fortunately, I was not tall enough, and in order to ease my disappointment, my mother advised me to watch the movie “Pretty Woman”. I became totally fascinated. However, it was not due to the leading actors, but to the great variety of models for dresses, not to say anything about bonnets and hats, shoes, and handbags. Another bout of excitement overwhelmed me when I got to know that the nearest college offered evening courses on the history of fashion. Since that time my main idea was to be able one day to walk along the catwalk together with Donna Karan or Carolina Herrera.

I strongly believe that all people are beautiful. But more often we find ourselves in situations when we do not know how to shape our beauty. So, the study of fashion, its history, its present modernizing trends, and its possible revolutionary future is one of the ways to help people feel and look beautiful. Many people think that fashion designers are just artists who create pictures of some nice, but very often impractical and expensive clothes. However, the subject matter of the profession is to look inside the person and even a generation and reveal the hidden potential with the help of attiring people in the best possible way.

I truly believe that being a fashion designer is not only about earning a lot of money, but predominantly about discovering beauty in everybody and everything and bringing it into the spotlight to marvel and enlarge.

Essay on Fashion in 200 Words

Fashion is an evolving form of self-expression that has penetrated our daily lives, bringing more clothing choices to become a reflection of culture, identity, and individuality.

Fashion, throughout history, has mirrored societal norms and values. It has been a canvas for rebellion or conformity. Whether it’s the flapper dresses of the 1920s, the bell-bottoms of the 1970s, or the minimalist styles of the 21st century, fashion has been a powerful communicator.

Moreover, the fashion industry is an economic powerhouse, shaping global trends and contributing significantly to various economies. It influences not only what we wear but also the jobs we create and the environmental impact we have.

Fashion’s role in personal identity is undeniable. People use clothing to express their personalities, tastes, and beliefs. It empowers individuals to feel confident and unique.

However, the fast fashion industry has been criticized for its environmental footprint and labor practices. However, over time calls for sustainable, ethical fashion have gained momentum, emphasizing the need for responsible consumption.

In conclusion, fashion is more than just attire; it’s a reflection of our culture, an economic force, a personal identifier, and a global conversation. As we navigate the complex world of fashion, it’s essential to strike a balance between personal expression, industry responsibility, and environmental sustainability.

My aspirations are to pursue a course in fashion design and business management that will facilitate achievements of my goals in being a successful fashion designer and business manager. My intellectual curiosity, qualifications, dedication as well as interests in furthering my skills in fashion design and business management offers me a good opportunity to pursue this career (Steele, 2000).

I have always been a fun of singing dancing taking pictures and cooking since I was two years old. I remember that freezing cold winter of 2005, when my parents decided to set up their own business on selling fashionable cloths and that was also the moment when my 100% of happiness end.

My parents were very busy due to their abroad business which expanded from Madrid to everywhere of Spain, China and Brazil, so they had little time for me and my little brother. Fortunately, I have been grown being a daughter, sister and mom at the same time because I know that taking care of my brother is my biggest responsibility. Moreover, the little time that my parents have spent on us, we have been flying to many countries to learn about how their business works and to get in touch with the clients has become the reason why I would like to be a real business woman as my mom, selling fashionable cloths.

Since the age of 12, for as long as I can remember, I started to be really interested on everyday’s fashion while others see the engineering, lawyer or doctor. Furthermore, my aspirations came from my mother and my intellectual curiosity and dedication have became one of my biggest goal that I want to achieve. That was the year when my mother named me as her little secretary. I wish to find my skills in fashion design and business management through familiarizing with visual merchandizing and store management. Actually, I would like to call my brand as AE15 and make all the people around the world be familiar with this name as they currently do with Prada or Louis Vuitton (Steele, 2005).

Consequently, having explored the success factors at Zara fashions stores, I got a better understanding of the world market in relation to fashion merchandize which is also a crucial success factor in this field. I also appreciate embracing diversification together with vertical integrations as the predominant strategy in the achievement of growth as has been implemented at Zara business. This specifically focuses on dressmaking designs, manufacturing, distributions as well as retailing of clothes as fast as possible since the appearance of the original design in the catwalks. Just like in Zara fashion stores, I want to enhance my skills in developing the formula for the contemporary chains and getting the on-trend fashions in the stores with speed while at the same time considering the quality standards as well as pricing so as to be ahead of the competitors. I am certainly sure that my dream is becoming as good entrepreneur as Zara owner do (Stephania, 2010).
