Photography Masters Theses
Graduate students in the Photography program develop visual and critical expertise through course work, seminars, independent studio work and critiques designed to provide a deep understanding of contemporary art practices and criticism. Working in personal studios, students have access to state-of-the-art technical facilities that allow for the exploration of film-based and digital photography, digital video and multimedia production.
In the final semester, MFA candidates focus on creating a comprehensive body of work under the guidance of a thesis committee. All Photography graduate students produce a thesis book that includes a written narrative and a body of visual work. They also participate in the RISD Graduate Thesis Exhibition , a large-scale public show held annually.

With the aim of listing transferable skills across creative subjects, photography education, in further and higher education is rapidly being homogenised into visual arts curriculums. Photography long seen as a vocational, technical subject, somewhere between science and technology is quickly disappearing into generic courses such as creative media or visual arts.

1.0 Abstract In 2003, sales of digital cameras surpassed those of film cameras, and there has been widespread adoption of digital photography by professional photographers. While scholars have long argued that photography plays an important social role, few have examined photography as a socio-technical phenomenon. Digital photography, considered as a set of novel technological artifacts supplanting traditional cameras, offers new opportunities for studying how photographers work and communicate.
