This résumé workshop provides detailed explanations, as well step-by-step processes, for creating an effective résumé. The Purdue OWL also maintains résumé quick tips resources and a résumé PowerPoint slide presentation. Please visit those resources for shorter discussions of the resume.

What is a résumé?

A résumé (also spelled resume) is a brief document that summarizes your education, employment history, and experiences that are relevant to your qualifications for a particular job for which you are applying. The purpose of a résumé (along with your cover letter) is to get an interview. Research has shown that it takes an average of ten (10) interviews to receive one (1) job offer, so your résumé needs to be persuasive and perfect. Given this, your résumé must be user-centered and persuasive .

The general purpose résumé usually contains four sections:

  • Honors, activities, and outreach

Writing the contact section of your résumé

This section of your résumé is definitely the easiest to write, but you do have a few options for design and content.

What is a contact information section?

Unlike other sections of your résumé, this section does not have a special heading like "Contact Information." Instead it simply lists the information below at the top of the page:

  • Your full name
  • Your e-mail address
  • Your permanent address
  • Your local or campus address (if applicable)
  • Your phone number(s)
  • Your web address/URL
  • Your fax number, etc.

Of course, as with the rest of your résumé, you'll want to double-check that all the information you include is current and accurate. Mistyping your phone number could easily cost you an interview! Also, if you list an e-mail address, be sure to check your e-mail regularly or you may miss an important message.

If you live on campus, you should provide your campus address. But you may also want to provide your home address.

Designing your contact information section

Employers will probably look first and last at your contact information section, so it's well worth your time to make this section easy-to-read and appealing to the eye. Whatever design choices you make, try to coordinate them with the rest of your résumé. Here are some specific design options:

  • Use page design strategies to present information in a usable format. For example, to help readers find desired information, you might place your name in a larger font size, center it, boldface it, or anything to make it stand out. If you have a permanent and local address, you might want to play with columns.
  • You may want to add a graphic element such as a horizontal line to help section off your contact information. Make sure the visual does not distract from your textual information.
  • Coordinate with your cover letter. One way to make your application documents a professional package is to match your cover letter and your résumé. You might do this by creating stationery or a letterhead for both documents. For instance, if you use two columns for your addresses and a double line on your résumé header, you might adapt it for the top of your cover letter as well. Make sure to use the same fonts (size also) for both documents.

A resume is a formal document, typically of one to two pages, that highlights a candidate’s education, experience and skills. Job seekers write resumes while applying for a job so recruiters can evaluate their competency and worth. Employers may collect resumes in person, through a company’s career website, a job search engine, or a professional social media page.

The word “resume” originally comes from the French word ‘ résumé ’, past participle of résumer which means “to summarize”. However, this term is primarily used in America and Canada to represent a document that showcases your skills and work experiences, and not in France and other parts of Europe where a curriculum vitae (or CV) is used instead. In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, biodata is often used in place of a resume.

In this lesson, you'll outline the skills that you've developed in five areas of your life—work, education, internships, volunteering, and extracurricular activities. Next, you'll come up with personality traits and narrow those down to the ones that are useful in a business setting. The lesson will ask you to list the three accomplishments that you're most proud of, and the skills that you used to make these goals come to fruition.

This lesson will cover the rules of resumes. For instance, a resume should be only one page, and it should be laser-printed or typeset by a professional printer, and it should be printed on bond paper. You'll also learn what not to include on your resume, and why it's perfectly acceptable to use the word "I" on your resume if you so desire. The lesson will conclude with a discussion about Truth in Resume Writing . Through example, it will demonstrate how to portray job duties in the best possible light without getting yourself into trouble.

In this lesson, you'll learn about the most popular style of resume—the chronological resume. In this type of resume, you'll list work experience in reverse chronological order. You'll learn about the different people you can request a letter from and take a look at the difference between a regular reference and a sealed reference. After that, you'll look at a sample reference sheet that you can use as a model to construct your own. The lesson will finish up with some examples of how you can refer to your references on your resume.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to turn job descriptions into advertising copy. Your resume is an advertisement for a product, and you are the product, and your potential employer is the customer. You need to express the features (actual description of your product) and the benefits (how it will help or aid the customer) of the product. You must be as persuasive and specific as possible when describing your features and benefits. Finally, the lesson will discuss company job descriptions and why they're important to you.

In this lesson, you'll learn all about technical resumes (resumes for engineering, data processing, and other technical and management careers). The lesson will discuss how these resumes differ from traditional resumes. You'll learn about buzzwords and find out how to use them effectively on a technical resume. Then, you'll learn some writing tips for technical resumes and go over a recommended technical resume format. You'll finish up the lesson by looking over some examples of technical resumes—one chronological and one functional.

In this lesson, you'll learn the three methods that employers use to locate a job candidate on the Internet. The lesson will discuss resume banks, search engines, and newsgroups. It will explain what you need in order to get Internet access, and the three versions you'll need in order to post your resume on the web. The lesson will also go over keywords and other online resume tips and explain why you need to protect yourself on the Internet, as well as ways to accomplish this. Finally, there will be a discussion about how to post your resume.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to write an effective cover letter. The lesson will explain what a cover letter is and when you'll need one. Then, you'll go over the different parts of a cover letter and look at several examples of them. Finally, the lesson will discuss the follow-up sentence that you might include in the closing of your cover letter and why it's important in your job search.

The final lesson is all about the new resume that you've been working on throughout this course. You'll take one final critical look at it: Is your name centered at the top of the page? Is it highlighted by a larger font, bolding, or underlining? Is your objective highlighted, along with your education, college, and work experience? Were you consistent with font sizes, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation? Is everything lined up vertically? The left-hand side of your resume should be lined up vertically, but the right-hand side should be ragged. Is your resume perfect with no typos or spelling errors? By the time you finish this lesson, your resume will be ready to present to prospective employers!

Stephanie earned a bachelor's in English from St. Lawrence University and a master's in business administration from Clarkson University. She has held management positions in the hospitality, paper, and seminar industries. For several years, she was employed in the Marketing department at the American Management Association. For the past decade, she has served as Director of Continuing Education at two colleges. In addition to owning her own business, Stephanie often lectures on Marketing and Business Writing to small business owners. She has taught Resume Writing Workshop for over 10 years and has helped nearly 2,000 people in the U.S., Canada, and Australia to improve their resumes.

Instructor-Moderated: A new session of each course begins each month. Please refer to the session start dates for scheduling.​ Self-Guided: Your course begins immediately after you enroll.​

How does it work?

Instructor-Moderated: Once a course session starts, two lessons will be released each week for the 6 week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends. You will interact with the instructor through the online discussion area. There are no live sessions or online meetings with the instructor. Self-Guided: You have 3 months of access to the course. After enrolling, you can learn and complete the course at your own pace, within the allotted access period. You will have the opportunity to interact with other students in the online discussion area.

How long do I have to complete each lesson?

Instructor-Moderated: The interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes two weeks after each lesson is released, so you're encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release. However, you will have access to all lessons from the time they are released until the course ends.​ Self-Guided: There is no time limit to complete each lesson, other than completing all lessons within the allotted access period. Discussion areas for each lesson are open for the entire duration of the course.

What if I need an extension?

Instructor-Moderated: Students enrolled in a six-week online class benefit from a one-time, 10-day extension for each course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.​ Self-Guided: Because this course is self-guided, no extensions will be granted after the start of your enrollment.

Formatting Resumes

This lesson is all about the new resume that you've been working on throughout this course. You'll take one final critical look at it: Is your name centered at the top of the page? Is it highlighted by a larger font, bolding, or underlining? Is your objective highlighted, along with your education, college, and work experience? Were you consistent with font sizes, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation? Is everything lined up vertically? The left-hand side of your resume should be lined up vertically, but the right-hand side should be ragged. Is your resume perfect with no typos or spelling errors? By the time you finish this lesson, your resume will be ready to present to prospective employers!

  • This course can be taken on either a PC, Mac, or Chromebook.

Software Requirements:

  • PC: Windows 8 or later.
  • Mac: macOS 10.6 or later.
  • Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are preferred. Microsoft Edge and Safari are also compatible.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader .
  • Software must be installed and fully operational before the course begins.
  • Email capabilities and access to a personal email account.

The NRWA’s  is a self-paced learning program that delivers practical, ready-to-use resume writing tips to improve your skills, whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out in the field.

 ($198 for nonmembers), or you may customize your learning by selecting the individual modules below ($30/each nonmembers).  Each module qualifies for 1 CEU. The training is an automated program. You may also download the PDF version of the learning materials. There are short quizzes throughout the training. You must get at least 80% of the questions correct, per segment, to be given the CEUs.

: The focus of this segment is on marketing concepts used in resume writing. You will learn how to sell benefits instead of features and emphasize successes, contributions, and achievements. Learn how to incorporate design elements and write compelling content to effectively market your resume clients.

: A good advertising copywriter knows her audience. She knows what consumers want and what product features and benefits to write about to persuade consumers to buy. As resume writers, we must do the same. Learn how to think like a copywriter and create resumes that generate a “call to action” for your clients.

: This segment covers grammatical errors commonly found on resumes, including capitalization, number usage, and plurals and possessives.

: One of the distinguishing features of an excellent resume are job descriptions. Like a good headline, the first sentence should pique the reader's attention and draw him into the copy that follows. Our goal as resume writers is to get the potential employer's attention. We do this by energizing our job descriptions and focusing on relevant accomplishments.

: A common question for the public, "Does the period go inside or outside the quotes?" should not be a common question for a writer. This segment will hone your skills on proper capitalization, using numbers, and punctuation.

: First impressions are important. Use what you learn in this session to help your clients stand out when introducing themselves to prospective employers.

: New college graduates and newly completed degrees have special requirements in writing resumes. In this segment, you'll learn how to deal with listing degrees, challenges for new college graduates, and common rules for formatting, lengths, and the presentation of resumes.

: You will learn about the three types of resume formats, how to use competencies and metrics-driven content to place the individual ahead of the crowd, and how to showcase results-focused accomplishments.

: This segment covers writing strong profile statements, centrally-focused theme resumes, and advanced design and formatting.

Kynan Kawai grew up in Hawaii. Attending public school till 2009, he was then accepted into Kamehameha, Kea’au. From a town fueled by agriculture and hospitality, Kynan explored both to see which provided opportunities of interest. Being actively involved in agriculture & ranching, he decided it was essential to understand business. However, in 2013, upon being accepted into Northern Arizona University for Business Management, he felt lost. Refocusing to Hotel & Restaurant Management was the perfect move. Working in Food & Beverage throughout college provided the skills needed to gain an Assistant Restaurant Manager Position at Fairmont Orchid in 2018. He expressed interest in focusing on colleague engagement & growth. In 2021, he was offered a Talent Acquisition Manager position where he embraces the Accor Employee Value Proposition, “Be Limitless.”

How to Conduct a Successful Resume Writing Workshop

How to Write a Resume for Master of Public Administration

A successful resume workshop should explain the different types of resumes with specific examples. It should also discuss how to include the most important elements that highlight a job candidate's qualifications and accomplishments.

Provide Visual Aids and Handouts

Make sure you have all your materials before beginning the session. If you have access to the right technology, create a presentation using a program like PowerPoint so your audience can follow along as you speak. If not, utilize your local print shop to create visual aids on poster board. Remember that your presentation or visual aids should only contain highlights of your session, not every detail. Handouts covering important points allow the audience to take something home. Finally, print out sample resumes: one using chronological organization, one using functional organization and one using a combination of the two.

Describe the Sections

During the presentation, start with the basics. The University of California, Davis' Internship and Career Center lists three essential sections in addition to the heading: education, experience and skills. Define each section and teach the audience what to include. For example, the education section highlights a candidate’s degrees and academic accomplishments, such as making the dean’s list or a high GPA. The work experience section shows the candidate’s job history and career accomplishments, such as high sales numbers or leading a project. It is important to emphasize accomplishments, not just job duties. The skills section points out job-related skills that might not show up anywhere else, such as proficiency with computer programs or languages spoken. Candidates should structure the resumes to highlight their best qualifications. Other sections, such as professional organizations, may also be included.

Explain Chronological Versus Functional

Describe different organizational patterns and their benefits. The UC Davis' career center points out three possibilities -- chronological, functional and a combination of the two. The chronological structure works best for those who are continuing their careers and whose previous experience is their best selling point, such as someone moving from management at one company to management at a different company. It lists the candidate's experience in order from most recent to least recent. The functional structure is ideal for those beginning new careers, such as recent college graduates, who want to show that they have the necessary skills and talent even if they lack relevant job experience. It is organized by skill set. Others prefer to combine the two approaches to show that while they are changing career paths, they do have relevant work experience. This approach emphasizes skills but still contains a chronological employment history including accomplishments at each position.

Give Formatting Tips

Provide your audience with general formatting tips. The University of South Carolina reminds users to avoid generic templates and to use 10- or 12-point Times New Roman or Arial fonts. You can also explain how to use underlining, bold, italics and bullets to highlight important points. The resume should have plenty of white space and appeal to the eye. The UC Davis career center says resumes should not be more than one page long, for someone without much experience, and never longer than two pages. Your audience should hold their resumes at arm’s length to see their works’ visual impact. Remind them to use action verbs to give their work panache. For example, they should say “I directed” an activity instead of “I was the director.” Finally, recommend they use 20-pound resume paper for physical copies and the correct type of file for online submissions. Reserve time at the end of the workshop for a question-and-answer session.

CV vs. resume — what's the difference?

Both a resume and CV (curriculum vitae) are documents that outline your education, experience and skills. However, they differ in their purpose and layout.

  • When applying to a job in the U.S., a resume is almost always the preferred document.
  • In many other countries, a resume is known as a CV. However, the term CV refers to a different document in the U.S.
  • In the U.S., CVs are most commonly used in academic environments, such as when applying to graduate school, jobs in academia or research positions.
  • CVs are more detailed than resumes and may be many pages long, while resumes are concise, usually only 1-2 pages in length.
  • CVs include more details on academic accomplishments including research, publications and teaching, while resumes focus on work experiences, education and skills.
