It is crucial for graduate students to search the thesis and dissertation literature to make sure that an idea or hypothesis has not already been tested, explored, and published. An additional reason to search this literature is that it is rich with ideas and information not found elsewhere. If graduate students do not continue on as academics or if students that came after them in their programs did not continue their research, this literature may be the end of the line for scholarship on a topic.
ProQuest has published dissertation e-learning modules covering the usefulness of using dissertations as a research source. See link below:
All graduate students should, at minimum, search the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global database (PQDT) to see if the research they are proposing to do has already been done by a student at another institution/university. RIT dissertations and theses have been included in PQDT since approximately 2006.
Each month ProQuest updates this list of the top 25 Most-Accessed Dissertations and Theses across all subjects, based upon total PDF downloads. Find out what is trending.
The web sites below should also be consulted as appropriate to perform a full and thorough review of the dissertation and thesis literature beyond your introductory search of ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. Consider whether a particular country or part of the world would have an interest in your potential research topic.
Only large-scale repositories of dissertations and theses are included here. You may also need to search individual university repositories directly.

Display advertising is a digital advertisement that uses text elements, images, GIFs or videos with an embedded link to lead viewers to another digital location to learn more about a product or buy it. Display ads showcase your brand on websites or apps, encouraging clicks that lead to landing pages with calls to action (CTAs).
Here are the display ad options you can use to promote your brand.
Also called retargeting ads, remarketing ads provide a personalized advertising experience for viewers. They target specific customer segments based on their recent interaction with your brand. Remarketing ads keep your brand in the minds of those who’ve previously shown interest in your product or services.
Like remarketing ads, personalized ads segment your audience to deliver a customized user experience. However, they reach beyond those who’ve interacted with your website. They target based on factors such as demographics, interests and recent purchases. Google recognizes four types of personalized ads :
These display ads let Google place your brand ads on websites based on parameters, such as your ad’s topic, keywords, language, location preference, host website themes or visitor browsing history. You can also match your ads with select topics from the Google Display Network .
These display ads target websites or individual pages within websites. That means you can choose the websites or web pages that display your ads.
Display ads can come in different formats. Below are the most popular ones:
There are several display ad sizes, including recommended regional ad sizes , but here’s a list of the top-performing Google display ad sizes.
Display Ad | Size | Recommended Use |
---|---|---|
Here’s how the following display ad sizes will fit a potential client’s computer screen.
Here’s how they’ll display on the screen of a mobile device.
Identifying your target audience will help you choose where to display your ads. Define who gets your display ads based on inputs, such as shopping signals and demography. For example, if you run a pizza restaurant, you should place your ads on food websites and pizza blogs, where pizza lovers go to find out what’s new. This targeted approach increases your visibility and the likelihood of converting.
The next thing to do to make display ads work is to define your campaign goals. Ask questions, such as:
Evaluate your business needs and goals with relevant teams and determine necessary key performance indicators (KPIs). Also, remember to make specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) goals .
Knowing your competitors’ display ad strategies will help you understand the peculiarities of high-performing display ads. It will guide you in creating the most effective ads with appropriate designs and website placements.
Use advertising intelligence software like Semrush’s AdClarity to find top industry advertisers and your competitors’ display ad expenditure, placement and more. Then, use the results from your analysis to refine your ad campaign for optimum performance.
It’s time to prepare your ad, engaging elements, such as images, GIFs and videos, and tailoring them for your audience. Note that a compelling design can boost your click-through rate (CTR) and help you make some sales while a poorly designed one can turn potential customers away. That’s why you should remember the following when creating a display ad:
Combining your design with relevant copy and a CTA enhances your conversion rate. When crafting your ad copy, address the pain points of your target audience and tell them what they’ll gain by choosing you. Also, create a simple copy that aligns with your CTA.
Use action-oriented words, such as “See How We Can Help,” “Get a Free Quote” and “Request a Demo,” which usually are more effective than generic words like “Click Here.” Also, create a sense of urgency with your words to prompt quick decision-making. Examples of such words are “20 Slots Available” and “Offer Ends on Friday.”
Choose websites and platforms that match your target audience’s interests to ensure your ads appear before those likely to become your customers. Even better to target websites with high traffic so that your ads reach more people. Use ad networks such as the Google Display Network and Meta Audience Network to connect to multiple websites and have them do the bulk of the work for you.
For example, Google Display Network reaches more than 90% of internet users today, offering responsive and uploaded display ads. You’ll need to design uploaded display ads while responsive display ads are automated, only requiring you to provide essential elements, such as images, videos, headlines and your logo. Google combines the components to fit various internet users.
Regardless of your choice, you’ll need to configure your campaign settings, including your target locations and budget. We recommend reviewing your campaign and hitting “Publish campaign” only when everything looks good.
The next thing left to do is launch your campaign but don’t stop there. Analyze your metrics using tools, such as Google Ad Manager and Google Analytics , for best results. Check how well your overall campaign and the elements perform. If they need to perform better, switch up the design, copy or ad placement and examine what works better. If, for example, a display ad gets a high CTR but fewer conversions, it usually indicates that the landing page needs a fix. Tweak it and conduct A/B testing to see which ads get better results.
Here are a few tips for designing the most effective display ads:
Several forms of digital advertising have their pros and cons. Before deciding whether to use display ads, consider their benefits and drawbacks.
Display advertising, popularly called display ads, is a flexible, cost-effective and measurable form of digital advertising. They use various elements, including text, images and videos, to promote a brand or its services. However, if you don’t know what they are, the different types and formats available, or how display ads work, you won’t be able to make the most of them or achieve the expected results.
Display ads are best for promoting a brand’s products and services and generating leads or sales. They help businesses reach a wide audience and remarket a brand’s service or product to someone who’s shown interest.
A display ad is a general term for various ads that direct viewers to another website or app while they browse the internet. A banner ad is a form of display ad.
Display ads enhance a small business’s conversion rate. They offer different pricing models and generally cost less. Plus, by targeting interested buyers and being flexible, display ads maximize the cost involved. Also, you can choose the PPC payment model, which allows you to pay only when someone clicks on your ad.

This services page for a hair salon is simple, to the point, and easy to navigate. This makes it an ideal landing page for the salon or individual stylists to link to in social media posts and emails to potential clients.
The image helps create balance on the page, but it’s not distracting from the most important details. It’s clear how a site visitor can make a booking from here, using the “Book appointment” button in the navigation bar—the ideal next step. Or they can keep browsing if they want to see more stylists and other details.

Your online store page is one of the best landing pages to send potential customers to. A well-organized store landing page can give shoppers a quick overview of your pricing and what you sell to help them quickly find something they’re interested in buying.
In this example, you can quickly browse what the floral shop offers or filter between full arrangements and vase-less bouquets. It’s easy to make a choice and purchase from there.

The landing page you choose to link depends on context. For example, this food business might link social media followers to a reservations landing page from a post showing off their new summer menu. But when speaking to people who are newer to the restaurant, the homepage or menu page might be a better landing page to link.
The reservations page design does an effective job of pointing visitors to the most important action: clicking that Book Now button. But it also includes design choices, like an animated squiggle, bold font, and bright colors, that communicate the personality of the restaurant.
A landing page doesn’t have to be part of a multi-page website. For community groups or bigger businesses, a landing page is a specific place to send people when marketing a specific thing.
In this website example, an athletic community is encouraging anyone interested to get in touch with a straightforward call to action. This allows the group to build a contact list and create a space for potential members while maintaining a separate space for active members.
For many people, the most visited landing page you have will be your website’s homepage . Your homepage will naturally have more information on it than a standalone landing page, but keep it focused to make sure you’re directing visitors to important pages or encouraging them to convert.
This example website does a good job of letting visitors know what the business sells and creating a sense of excitement around their product. The headline captures the viewer and the next section on the page highlights the product and links to shop—the top goal of the business. But if someone isn’t ready to buy, the page follows with reviews and options to stay connected via social media or email.
This example of a homepage landing page focuses on a design for a store that might need to educate potential customers before they decide to buy. Whereas pet owners might have a sense of what they want out of accessories for their pets and how to identify them in a product listing, that’s harder for a body care product.
On this landing page, the business puts more products on display and highlights the benefits for each category. Instead of linking to social media on the homepage, they focus on their research and mission, to build trust with their potential customers.
An event is a perfect opportunity to use a landing page. The landing page gives you one central place to share information about your event and collect RSVPs. Whether it’s part of your website or a standalone site, having a dedicated page also makes it easier to discover.
You can edit the page as your event develops, first building excitement with a simple page teasing the event, then revealing more details closer to the event date. Add a custom form to collect RSVPs, food and drink preferences, or other requests from your guests.
When designing your landing page, it’s helpful to keep a few things in mind.
Have a goal in mind. Knowing what you want to get across to a visitor and what you want your site visitors to do will focus your ideas.
Know your target audience. Understanding what matters to your site visitors will help you address those points and accomplish your goal.
Use design to draw attention. Use bold colors and fonts or where you place elements on your landing page to ensure someone is attracted to your call to action or key details.
Have a backup plan. While there’s one goal you have in mind for your visitors, think of where else you could send someone who’s not ready to take action yet. Make sure it’s easy for them to reach that point

A growth loop is a system that brings in new users or customers each time an existing one takes a particular action.
Every business wants to grow their audience, sales, and revenue. There are a lot of different ways that you can do that, most of which involve marketing strategies like search engine optimization (SEO) and paid advertising . But a method you might not have heard as much about is a growth loop.
Growth loops are becoming more and more popular, so it’s probably a good idea to see if there’s a way to harness them for your business. The basic idea is to create a system that will keep new customers coming in even without direct action on your part.
Below, we’ll define growth loops in more detail and explain why they matter. After that, we’ll go over six different examples of growth loops used by real businesses. Keep reading to learn more, and then subscribe to Revenue Weekly — our email newsletter — to learn about more ways to increase sales!

(Don’t worry, we’ll never share your information!)
A growth loop is a business system where users or customers take actions that directly bring in other users or customers. Those actions could consist of any number of things, as we’ll see from the examples in a moment. But the idea is that they bring in new customers without any direct action by the business.
The reason for using a business growth loop is that it’s an effective way to bring in new customers and revenue without as much work on your part.
Of course, you still have to do the work of setting up the loop in the first place. And even once it’s up and running, you can’t sit back and let it do all the work — you still need to run marketing and advertising campaigns alongside it. Having a growth loop doesn’t exempt you from needing to market your business.
That said, growth loops are great for building on your existing marketing efforts and bringing in more customers without requiring too much extra money or energy from you.
We’ve established the definition of a growth loop, but it can be hard to understand what that means without concrete examples. That’s why we’ll be going over six different real-world examples of businesses that use growth loops to bring in new users and customers:
Keep reading to find out about each one.
Probably one of the most well-known examples of growth loops comes from LinkedIn. If you’ve used LinkedIn before, you may know what I’m referring to.
When you create a new LinkedIn account, the platform will offer to sync with your list of email contacts so that you can find and connect with all of them on the site. For any contacts not on LinkedIn, it will give you the option of inviting them to join the platform.
That means that when new users join the site, they commonly end up inviting others to join as well. Then those users do the same thing, and so on.
Another great example growth loop comes from Dropbox. Dropbox uses a referral program, where it encourages people to refer their friends to the service. To incentivize referrals, it gives users more storage space for referrals they bring in.
This system is perfect for drawing in a steady flow of new customers automatically. An existing user will refer a friend, who will then refer friends of their own, and so on. Users benefit from the upgraded storage space, and Dropbox benefits from getting more business.
Louis Vuitton, the famous luxury brand, uses yet another type of growth loop. When people buy this brand, they’re buying it as much for the name as for the actual products. There’s a certain prestige associated with having a Louis Vuitton product. For that reason, the company features their logo prominently on everything they sell.
As a result, every product Louis Vuitton sells is a source of free advertising. Louis Vuitton customers walk around displaying the company logo everywhere they go — not unwittingly, but with deliberate intent to show it off. This free advertising inevitably brings in more customers over time.
If you’re not familiar with Venmo, it’s a money transaction app owned by PayPal. It’s a handy alternative to giving someone cash or writing them a check. Here’s the catch, though — you can only send someone money on Venmo if both of you have the app. That system means that in order to use the app, you need other people in your life to use it, too.
The result is that people commonly encourage their friends to download the app and create an account so that they can transfer money between them. It’s a great strategy on Venmo’s part to draw in lots of new users with minimal effort.
Loom provides one of the simplest growth loop examples on this list. It’s not as complex as the others listed here, but it still works.
Basically, Loom is a service that lets you easily record videos on your computer and then share them with others via a link. It’s a great way to communicate information best explained visually or audibly. So, how is this a business growth loop?
Loom is the perfect example of product-led marketing. Someone sends someone a Loom video, and the recipient gets to experience Loom’s product firsthand. Seeing how useful Loom is, they might then go create an account themselves so that they can do the same thing.
Our last example growth loop comes from Yelp. You’ve probably heard of Yelp, which is a website where people can leave reviews of local businesses. Yelp’s growth loop was crucial to it becoming as big as it did.
It started out small, but as more customers left business reviews, those reviews started to take on more and more weight. When that happened, businesses started recognizing the impact of those reviews, so they started encouraging customers to leave positive reviews.
The encouragement worked, and even more people started leaving Yelp reviews. That made even more businesses encourage people to use the site, and so on. Yelp just kept getting bigger and bigger due to the positive feedback loop between customers and businesses on the site.
