Essay on Television for Students and Children

500+ words essay on television.

Television is one of the most popular devices that are used for entertainment all over the world. It has become quite common nowadays and almost every household has one television set at their place. In the beginning, we see how it was referred to as the ‘idiot box.’ This was mostly so because back in those days, it was all about entertainment. It did not have that many informative channels as it does now.

Moreover, with this invention, the craze attracted many people to spend all their time watching TV. People started considering it harmful as it attracted the kids the most. In other words, kids spent most of their time watching television and not studying. However, as times passed, the channels of television changed. More and more channels were broadcasted with different specialties. Thus, it gave us knowledge too along with entertainment.

Benefits of Watching Television

The invention of television gave us various benefits. It was helpful in providing the common man with a cheap mode of entertainment. As they are very affordable, everyone can now own television and get access to entertainment.

In addition, it keeps us updated on the latest happenings of the world. It is now possible to get news from the other corner of the world. Similarly, television also offers educational programs that enhance our knowledge about science and wildlife and more.

Moreover, television also motivates individuals to develop skills. They also have various programs showing speeches of motivational speakers. This pushes people to do better. You can also say that television widens the exposure we get. It increases our knowledge about several sports, national events and more.

While television comes with a lot of benefits, it also has a negative side. Television is corrupting the mind of the youth and we will further discuss how.

Additionally, it also makes people addict. People get addicted to their TV’s and avoid social interaction. This impacts their social life as they spend their time in their rooms all alone. This addiction also makes them vulnerable and they take their programs too seriously.

The most dangerous of all is the fake information that circulates on news channels and more. Many media channels are now only promoting the propaganda of the governments and misinforming citizens. This makes causes a lot of division within the otherwise peaceful community of our country.

Thus, it is extremely important to keep the TV watching in check. Parents must limit the time of their children watching TV and encouraging them to indulge in outdoor games. As for the parents, we should not believe everything on the TV to be true. We must be the better judge of the situation and act wisely without any influence.

Television is a modern invention. When television was first invented, people of the world were very happy because they had the scope to know the world around them and to entertain themselves in the best possible ways. Television is no doubt something which ushered progress of civilization. Some electronic media like BBC took over the most important role to make the people of the world aware of the society to which they were belonging and the environment by which they were being nourished. It is quite well known that, BBC produced all of the plays of Shakespeare as films. Even this world famous electronic media focused on the two World Wars so much so that people of the world came to know how horrible was war and warfare. Thus social consciousness was an important factor that was first aroused by the aid of television.

But this television is now being abused constantly by some commercially debased people. In West Bengal, television is so abused that the young generation is now misguided. The young people follow the bad culture and become oblivious of the hoary tradition of our country. Mere entertainment has been presented on the different television channels. Meaningless serials and reality shows are heart-throbbing without any moral impact. Crimes and social disorder are presented so crudely that the minds of the young people are overwhelmed with frustration, dilapidation, and despair. It seems that there is no escape from despair. The ultimate result is social alienation which brings about moral dilemma.

Yet, the concerned authority is really callous to the problems. Advertisement, sponsors, etc. are the sources of the economic structure of the different channels. Thus, the producers intend to draw the attention of the businessman by claiming the popularity of the channels. The inevitable result of this kind of commercial debasement is of Course disintegration that causes serious disbelief in the sphere of culture and education. Therefore, we must be conscious of the fact that television is not merely a media for entertainment; rather it is a source of important social and cultural messages.

Television, originally known as the “idiot box,” has come a long way since its inception. Invented by John Logie Baird, it was initially designed solely for entertainment. Over the decades, technology has transformed it into a multifaceted medium. The word “television” itself reflects its essence, with “tele” meaning far-off and “vision” pertaining to seeing. It has become a device with a screen that receives signals, offering a wide array of channels and programmes.

Television is no longer confined to being a source of amusement; it’s a vital tool for education and information dissemination. News channels keep us informed about global events, and educational programmes expand our knowledge horizons. Television Influence on People Essay

Interpersonal relationships depend on a variety of internal and external factors, and television remains one of the most controversial issues in human life. On the one hand, according to Martin and Jacobus (2019), social interactions offered on TV are predictable and rather slick, with no solid room for experimentation and imagination. On the other hand, access to television programs has already become a meaningful international movement (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). It means that information may be displayed on TV and provoke certain emotions and behaviors. People want to and can watch as many shows and episodes as possible to cover their personal needs and emotional satisfaction. They compare experiences, analyze environments, and develop discussions to demonstrate what they learn from the offered material. For example, high social expectations and new perspectives on obligations depicted on TV affect adolescents and adults. In this essay, analyzing the course reading and an interview with a friend allows learning that despite a common context and technical advancement, television has a great impact on people.

Despite the intention to control the impact of TV on children, it is hard for parents to ensure that proper shows and episodes are chosen for watching. During this interview, my friend recognized two shows that determined her childhood and adolescence – Friends (NBC, 1994-2004) and Beverly Hills 90210 (CBS, 1990-2000). At that moment, watching the chosen series was related to multiple positive emotions because the authors depicted the nature of teenage and adult relationships and the quality of life that American citizens could have (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). For example, in Beverly Hills , school and college education were described, with a special evaluation of current problems of drug abuse, sexual violence, bullying, and friendship. In Friends , attention was paid to the essence of friendship and situations when certain decisions should be made and preferences should be established. It was learned that even the most intelligent and careful people could make mistakes and needed to analyze their behaviors in particular contexts. Each show seriously impacted the interviewee’s behavior and acceptance of reality. Those stories prepared adolescents for their grown-up lives where racial, gender, and age inequality existed and put various restrictions on an individual’s activities.

The ways of making TV shows have changed with time, including various technological and social aspects, but their impact on people stays the same. Today, there is no need to wait for a particular time but use the Internet and watch favorite shows anytime. The interviewee shared her interest in such series as Grey’s Anatomy (ABC, 2005 – ) and Gossip Girl (CW, 2007-2012). Almost every episode brought some new experiences and emotions to her life because the characters lived their lives, solved problems, and achieved their goals. Martin and Jacobus (2019) notice that many modern episodes are self-contained, and it does not take much preparation or explanation in advance. Therefore, the number of viewers changes regularly, and some people demonstrate their interest or choose other shows. My friend admires Grey’s Anatomy due to its surgical themes and how health care has been recently improved. Gossip Girl is a show about modern teenagers, their problems, and their dreams. It reveals what young people want, what steps they are ready to take, and how family business affects children’s future. Instead of inspiration or motivation, these series provoke critical thinking and evaluation.

Addressing the chosen TV shows and learning the material from the textbook, it has become evident that television’s impact cannot be ignored. Despite the year of production and distribution, the main goal of any product is to entertain people and gain commercial benefits (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). However, modern researchers and sociologists admit that new programs are characterized by biased or sensationalist judgments that discourage social engagement and misinform people (Rothwell, 2019). Therefore, it is important to be cautious and accept the offered material for advertising purposes. Marked influence continues to grow and promote the American style of life in many countries abroad. Video art has become a serious competitor to commercial television, offering experimental and radical ideas to please the audience (Martin & Jacobus, 2019). This sphere of art has not been properly examined yet, but its abilities are unpredictable and captivating. Although some people are confident in the television industry, it is wrong to neglect the possibility of improvement but gain a better meaning. Compared to the adolescent period, when viewers admire opportunities and discover new sources of inspiration, adulthood makes them more attentive to the significant details.

Communication with my friend and the evaluation of old and new TV shows and video art ideas turn out to be a valuable experience in understanding how people should treat television. Different in quality and distribution periods, most series are similar in their context and purposes. They aim to describe human lives, address social, economic, and political problems, and show how certain decisions lead to certain outcomes. However, even if the episodes vary, their impact on people is definite – watching, learning, and following the examples. Images and sounds have been improved regardless of the viewer’s readiness or knowledge levels. Still, how individuals accept these stories has nothing to do with technology but personal judgments and attitudes toward society.

The Television

The television is a popular entertainment device. It is very common and is found in almost all households. When the television first started broadcasting, it was known as the "Idiot Box” because at that time, the only purpose of television was to provide entertainment. Now, with the advancement of technology and creativity, television has emerged as an important mass media. There are many learning and informative channels on the TV today which act as the source of knowledge as well as entertainment.

The word "Television" comprises two words: "tele" and "vision". Tele is a prefix of Greek origin, which means far-off, which is used in creating names of instruments for operating over long distances, whereas vision means the act or faculty of seeing. “Television” can be termed as a device with a screen for receiving signals.

The Perspectives of Television

The television was first invented by a Scottish scientist, John Logie Baird. Originally, it was capable of displaying monochromatic motion images (or videos). With advances in technology now, we have coloured TVs and even smart TVs. Children and adults depend on television for their entertainment. People spend a lot of their leisure time watching television. This may lead one to wonder whether it is really a good practice to spend so much time on the television. There are certain advantages and disadvantages of television beyond doubt.

The Advantages of Watching Television

An Inexpensive Source of Entertainment: Television is now a very cheap mode of entertainment. Televisions are not very costly, and apart from a very minimal service fee, one needs nothing more to be entertained. Televisions are a great entertainment option for people who live alone or cannot go out often. Televisions are cheap enough to be affordable for all.

Provides Knowledge: Television has a number of services, like news channels and so on. These channels and services help us stay up-to-date with the latest news all around the world. Television also offers educational programs, which help us expand the horizon of our knowledge. We get to learn about science, wildlife, history, and so on.

Gives Motivation: There are programs on television which motivate people to develop certain skills. There are programs of motivational speakers which inspire the viewers to push themselves to excel in their line of work.

The Disadvantages of Television

Like every other device, television too has some demerits alongside its advantages.

Inappropriate Content: Television has barely any measures to prevent segregation of mature and adult audiences from younger audiences. Thus, when a piece of content is aired, it can be viewed by all. As a result, the younger section of the audience is exposed to inappropriate content.

Addiction: Studies have shown that watching a lot of television can get addictive. Television addiction helps lower social activities and promotes inactivity. This makes children more susceptible to mental as well as physical illnesses.

Fake Information: A lot of television content is aimed to spread misinformation for views and ratings. This kind of misinformation can hinder social and communal harmony. The misinformation can also leave a lasting impression on the audience who are of a vulnerable age.

Short Essay on Television in English (200 words)

Television is a great medium of entertainment for people from every age group. It provides enjoyment for the whole family. There are many channels, including news channels, sports channels, and channels of films, cartoons, or songs. Television also contains many programs and shows for kids. Television is a device that entertains the public and informs us about the country and the world.

Television is an amazing invention of science. Watching television makes us fresh, and we forget our worries and fatigue with its magic. Nowadays, the satellite technology and the cable network are far more powerful than ever. A variety of content is available on television and we can watch a channel of our choice. Television also has a great educational value as there are so many channels reserved for educational purposes. Many companies in the world prepare graded programmes.

However, television has a dark side too. Watching too much television can be harmful. Generally, kids are very fond of watching television, but continuously watching television can affect their eyes. Furthermore, it has an adverse effect on their studies. Students will not get enough time to study well if they stay busy watching television, and it makes them less imaginative. In spite of its dark side, television has become a vital means of transmitting both education and entertainment.

Television also turns people into addicts. People avoid social connection because of their TV addiction. As a result, kids spend more time alone in their rooms, which has an impact on their social life. They become vulnerable due to their addiction and take their programmes way too seriously.

My Life Experience

When I was kid I used to watch television very much which affected my studies and physical health. After that my mother gave me some valuable tips about health and told me the disadvantages of television. I reduced the hours I spent watching TV and went to play games on the ground. After some time I noticed my health getting better and my mind becoming clearer. Television is good when people watch in their limits. But when people exceed their number of hours, then it will affect their mental health and body health. Television is beneficial because it gives knowledge about all the world and shows low cost entertainment.

Key Points To Remember When Writing Essay On Television For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on the television for kids, a paragraph on the television for children, short essay on the television in 200 words for kids, long essay on the television for kids, what will your child learn from these essays.

Before the birth of the internet, television was the most popular mass media globally. An essay on television has been a popular topic for writing articles. Children must know what a television is to write an essay on this device. This device was once a window into the world. It has slowly taken a back seat with the introduction of mobile phones. In this essay on television for classes 1, 2, & 3, we will discuss how to write about this device.

Here are important tips on how to write an essay on the television:

  • Gather facts on the television, such as its history, working mechanism, and advancements made.
  • Keep the essay informative and relatable to the general reader.
  • Add introductory and concluding lines to long-form essays.
  • Avoid stuffing the essay with technical information unless it is required.

One-line essays are easy for children as an introduction to writing. Below is an essay for classes 1 and 2 on television:

  • Television is one of the most popular sources of entertainment and information about the world.
  • The word television comes from the ancient Greek word “tele”, meaning far and the Latin word “visio”, which means sight.
  • TV was coined as a short form for television in 1948.
  • Television in the old days used CRT monitors. Modern televisions use LED or LCDs.
  • John Logie Baird invented the colour television in 1937.
  • Old televisions operated on simple antennas or cable networks.
  • Modern televisions are smart and very similar to mobile phones.
  • Televisions have been a source of endless entertainment for people for decades.
  • Television has both advantages and disadvantages.
  • As per the BARC report, 6.9% more Indian households owned a TV between 2018-2020.

Essays take practice to perfect. Here is an example of how to write a paragraph about the television:

Entertainment is a necessity in everyone’s life. Ever since the invention of the TV by John Logie Baird in 1926, people slowly realized its potential to act as mass media. The television revolutionized entertainment by creating a whole industry around it in the form of movies, game shows, series and documentaries. It is loved by adults and children alike as it has become a window to the world. People have been glued to their television sets, watching one show after another. It has become a centrepiece in everybody’s life. But, television watchers have declined since the introduction of computers, mobile phones and the internet. However, it continues to be relevant in the modern era.

A short essay is a great place to start learning essay writing. Here is an essay for classes 1, 2 and 3 on the television:

When it comes to inventions that have had the most impact on modern civilization, the television has earned a spot at the top of the list. While many people demonstrated a device that could display pictures, John Logie Baird came up with coloured television in 1937 that became popular. The device consisted of a cathode-ray tube and a screen that could project images and audio. For a long time, television was black and white in most people’s homes, and they had one or two channels that were a popular source of news and entertainment.

Once cable TV started worldwide, the entertainment industry moved to television production. Reality shows, movies and 24 hours news became a thing that began shaping the world and how people spent their time. Before the invention of the personal computer, the TV was also part of the gaming industry as a display unit. Most children had gaming consoles that displayed graphics on the TV.

Television has gone through major changes in the last few decades, and entertainment has mostly diversified into the internet, with the TV taking a back seat. However, it continues to be one of the most trusted and viewed mass media devices globally.

Short paragraph writing needs to be practised before children can take on the task of writing the long ones. Here is an example essay on television for class 3:

The television is one of the most popular and loved inventions in the world. This device is not only a source of news and entertainment but also a window to the world. Almost a century ago, television’s invention revolutionized the entertainment sector and how people viewed the world.

In 1926, John Logie Baird demonstrated the first television as we know it now and later developed the colour television. People from the older generations would recall that televisions looked nothing like what they do now. They were mostly made of a huge wooden box that contained a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) connected to a glass screen.

Colour televisions were harder to find, especially in developing countries, until the 1990s. Thanks to technology becoming cheaper, it was widely seen in most houses by the early 2000s. The flat-screen TV, which started becoming popular during the 2000s, had better picture quality, and some even had inbuilt games. By the decade’s end, the LCD and LED display screens replaced CRT television sets, and television became slimmer and more energy-efficient. Fast forward to the 2020s, televisions are smarter with internet connectivity and new features.

Throughout history, television viewers have mixed sentiments regarding its influence on people. Some thought of it as a wonderful source of information and connectivity, while many saw it as a distraction that wasted students’ time. Regardless of people’s opinions, the effect television has on the modern world cannot be overstated, and it continues to be a favourite window to the world for most people.

History Of Television

The history of television can be traced back to the 1800s. Before the invention of electronic television, mechanical televisions existed to scan an image and transmit it to a screen. John Logie Baird demonstrated his mechanical television in 1926, and it would take ten more years before the commercial production of televisions. Philo Farnsworth demonstrated the first successful electronic television in 1927. India first saw television as an experiment on 15th September 1959.

Television in the Past

Television in the past was the most praised item as it was owned by a few people. Owning such a gadget would attract a multitude of people but as time goes technology has really brought a few changes here and there. There is a high demand from the viewers of what content they want on their television screens. Greenfield emphasizes that

Advancement and Challenges

the size of the screen is of importance too, the wider the viewing area the more audience it accommodates and that is ideal for commercial purposes. Although Greenfield does not say so directly, he apparently assumes that based on his experience in the industry, advancement would be a false belief. Furthermore,

Contradiction and Innovation

Greenfield contradicts himself stating that due to the advancement of the new technology, it is relatively hard for the television industry to grow further. It has been contributed by the innovations of smartphones which has been joyfully welcomed by a large population. Greenfield creates a good tone on the brief understanding of the television revolution. Basing on the Greenfield article, strategies used are explained to meet his purpose and the effectiveness of the strategy implementation are to be discussed.

Brand Promotion and Ethos

Brands are always advertised by the logo design used, the logos carry a message that relatively markets the company or the product attached to. Greenfield is known to have used logos to ensure that his audience is convinced of the services he provides, through that strategy, people were convinced. He adds that even though television was perceived to have brought isolation among human beings, it has brought about the unity of people. There are various television shows that have been created in various channels which promotes a certain doctrine relatively important to the viewers (Russell 306). Through the shows, people get to learn various things as well as being a form of entertainment. In order for one to persuade somebody to go for something, one has to be credible, authoritative and must show honesty in the process. Such feature is called ethos, Greenfield takes charge and shows people the history of television in the early 1970's, in the process he gets to win up the mindsets of the audience.

Honesty and Credibility

On the other hand, the trait of honesty is seen where he agrees that he had contradicted himself by stating that the television commercial business would continue to sink due to the advancement of the technology. According to Greenfield's idea, "The enormous pressures which force television into its relatively narrow boundaries are not likely to widen in the foreseeable future" (3). Within a span of less than a year, the industry showed an increment in growth level which was contradictory to his support statement. Honesty promotes the persuasive ability and thus the reader is relatively convinced to buy his idea (Mastropieri 17). Credibility is another key persuasive point that is highly considered, the reader has gone through the history of television in guidance with the author, is relatively convinced.

Pathos and Monopoly

Pathos is another key point; it is the process of appealing emotions in the direction of the targeted audience. Greenfield portrays this aspect by letting people know the effects that came in the television industry. He goes on and states the problem faced by anybody trying to create a different network other than the ones present (Shelton 366). Three networks were working nationwide and no one had any authority to come up with one of his kind. Its monopoly came to an end after several years. In 1975, RCA came up with first of two "Satcom" communication satellites which marked the death of three network monopolies (3). Advanced technology is likely to have caused the end of monopoly period as various gadgets were introduced, cell phones that could assess the internet were invented and thus easy access to information. Despite the presence of the mobile phones, people are still on the run to purchase the televisions. Televisions are nowadays taken to be offering one form of entertainment.

Television and Economic Growth

Televisions have promoted quick propagation of news in the current times, a good number of people can assess a television or if not owns one. Creation of various television stations has enabled many citizens to get employed (Tepper 159). This has promoted good living standards of the citizens and is always contributing to the country's gross domestic product. The living standards of the people are always one of the key factors the government uses to measure the growth of the economy.

Diverse Opinions and Innovation

In the past, there were writers who had different opinions and would put it down without considering anyone's idea. According to Dick Wolf, he believes that "broadcasting is different from cable" (4). The different opinions at hand promoted interaction of diverse ideas given (Larkey 463). It enhanced freedom of choice to work on an idea but without going against the set laws. With that in mind, various innovations were welcomed and that has really changed the way things are done. Advancement in technology stands to be the best sector in terms of improvements.

Technological Advancements

Greenfield had good ideas which were welcomed by many, he knew how to articulate the ideas and sending the message home was his point of efficiency. Speaking of the past, there were few steps made when it comes to the technology, but comparing to the present day, a good number of changes have been witnessed (Boserup 1981). Technology is making the world a smaller village, people can get assessed to news at any given time with the help of the mobile phones. The television sets used in the past have now changed their functionality and shape. The developers have made it portable and their sizes placed in an attractive state. People could view the television sets but what ran back in their mind was bulk of questions. Daniel Boorstein says that the television brought a feeling of separation and restriction in that, a person could view something but no one else could know how he or she reacts to it. It thus meant that one may be torturing oneself psychologically in the event of making the right judgment.

Effective Communication Strategies

In the event of coming up with right strategies to be employed, one has to consider various factors. Any given piece of knowledge or information to be passed should be done in the right manner and follow the right channels (Turk 29). Every step is vital as if the information is relayed wrongly, then the target group may not welcome it at all. Honesty, credibility and the power of being in authority majorly contributes to a good passage of a message. Those are the traits that really promoted buying of Greenfield idea. According to (Graft 2006), for one to gain knowledge on various techniques, one should get to read various materials relevant to the field. Through that one gets to gain experience on and thus improvement shall be realized.

Positive and Negative Impacts

Even though people have majorly benefited from the television, it has, on the other hand, promoted evil morals. There can be channels mend for the adults but are accessible to the children. With a daily routine of watching the events taking place, one can be tempted to put in to practice. The use of vulgar language by various musicians being aired on the screens mostly changes one mode of thinking (Gentina 639). Others can decide to use it as a form of trendy styles, emulation of other peoples form of dressing has majorly resulted from the kind of things aired on the television screens.

Advantages of Television

On the other hand, television came with various advantages. It has promoted easier access to the news (Davis 85). People from any part of the country can get to learn of what is taking place in the nation. Every part of the country has got various news reporters on the ground, creation of jobs has been welcomed in that lane.

In conclusion, strategies that have been employed in order for Greenfield idea to be bought and various strategic implementation discussed. The three strategies are; use of logos, pathos, and honesty. Generally, for any given idea to be welcomed, the above traits should be used. For the further advancement of the television industry, better strategies should be laid down to promote its growth. Lastly, with the radical changes in technology globally, the idea should be welcomed with a greater strength.

The Seven Ways To Write About Television

Linda Holmes

Linda Holmes

A hand with a remote looking at many screens.

Perhaps it's the combination of Sunday night's Mad Men finale and the flurry of Sopranos discussion that followed the death of James Gandolfini, but it's hard not to be struck by the explosion of writing about television that's occurred in the last 15 years or so, facilitated (of course) by the ability to go from rolling credits to publication in an hour (if necessary). After any major episode, there will be a flurry of commentary, and even after minor episodes of minor shows, there are write-ups here and there.

But while these pieces — whether you call them recaps, reviews, essays, commentaries, whatever — may look the same, there are a bunch of different ways to do them, and understanding the kinds that are out there might help you find the kind you like. So here they are: the seven ways people commonly write about television.*

The Craft model . In a lot of ways, this is the kind of criticism with which people are most familiar. It's focused on the quality of work that goes into a show — how strong is the directing, writing, acting, lighting, scoring, and so forth. The higher-brow the show is, the more Craft writing there is; nobody spends a lot of time writing about the direction on NCIS or The Big Bang Theory , even if they like those shows.

That doesn't mean there is no craft — it just means either writers are usually not interested in writing about it or they don't have the familiarity with the form to analyze it effectively. Craft writing probably requires the most background knowledge and the most experience, and it's where you're most likely to fall into a hole if you don't actually know which pieces of a show's quality are the result of direction, for instance, versus writing. To give you an example of Craft done well, Matt Zoller Seitz is a Craft writer, mostly. (Although, I should note, everyone I know who's a good writer incorporates elements of all these models. But Matt is a Craft guy.)

The Ethical model. It's almost a subspecies within the Craft model, but it deserves its own section, I think. The Ethical model is where writers address the sociological implications of how the show is made. In the reality setting, this is pretty obvious — were people subjected to terrible conditions, and so forth. But Ethical writing also tends to incorporate issues of gender, race, sexuality, politics, and so forth. Perpetuating stereotypes, representation behind and in front of the camera — this is where Ethical writing gets its strength. Alyssa Rosenberg does a lot of Ethical writing at Think Progress; she's probably the only writer I can think of where that's what she sees as her primary beat (perhaps unsurprisingly).

The Puzzle model. This is the writing that tries to uncover hidden meanings and explain symbolism. The idea is to take your sharp eye, as the writer, and note things that other people perhaps wouldn't notice. The absolute best Puzzle writing I'm aware of at the moment is Mad Style , the weekly column breaking down the costuming of Mad Men , found at the fashion site Tom and Lorenzo . Most costume commentary, other than this, is part of the Craft model — admiring the sheer beauty of wardrobe choices or the skill in matching them to the period. But Mad Style treats fashion like other writing treats any other kind of messaging and applies specialized knowledge to surface pieces of the storytelling that aren't obvious.

But whenever writers are pointing out callbacks, metaphors, symbolism, lines that have double meanings — that's all Puzzle stuff. In many, many episode recaps, you'll find bullet points at the end, some of which will be Puzzle content that doesn't fit anywhere else.

The Maker model. These are the pieces of writing that focus on the relationship between a show and its creator, in spite of the fact that lots of people's work go into the final product. It's kind of like auteur theory in film, although it tends to be a little more from-the-hip with television, and it doesn't necessarily indicate that anyone is sophisticated enough to be considered an auteur. These are things like Emily Nussbaum's marvelous New Yorker piece on Ryan Murphy, "Queer Eyes, Full Heart." There are makers who attract much more Maker writing than others — Shonda Rhimes, oddly enough, attracts less of it than you might expect, given her massive impact on the ABC lineup, while Lena Dunham attracts outrageous tons of it, despite her relatively small audience. (Aaron Sorkin gets more of it the more he complains about it, which is sweet justice for someone, but I'm not sure who.)

The Riff model. This is writing that sees television primarily as a jumping-off point for jokes. It's what Television Without Pity was when I worked there, it's what Previously.tv is, and it's what a lot of Vulture recaps are, including (for instance) Dave Holmes writing about American Idol .

The Vignette model. On a personal note, this is probably the model I use the most. Monday's piece about the Mad Men finale falls into this category; on a less serious note, so does the Scandal piece I wrote about how everyone in the world should dump Fitz. In the Vignette model, you look at a piece of television as a little story, and then you address a bunch of discussion questions. Can Don be saved? Is Megan misunderstood? Can Walter White turn his life around? Should Alicia Florrick get back together with her husband? These aren't really about the quality of the product, exactly, they're questions the product provokes . The episode, in this case, just exists — it's like an essay question on a test. "Discuss."

A lot of people are completely baffled by Vignette writing. This is where you get the "What are you talking about THESE ARE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS!" stuff, as if you'd never talk about what the people in a story did unless it was true. The irony is that Vignette writing freaks people out, but it was the first literary analysis most of us ever learned: Why does this character lie? What should this person have done? What motivated Iago?

Vignette writing is also what animates just about everyone who likes writing about reality TV, because while there's a lot of craft involved in differentiating good reality from bad, that's not what most of the writing is about. Most of the writing, whether serious or funny, is about the people in the story and what their behavior says about the way people act. I don't remember ever having an incredibly fascinating conversation about the crafting of reality shows except with people who make them or appear on them, but I've had many, many great discussions about (for instance) the distinction between the kinds of men who win Survivor and the kinds of women who win, or why The Bachelor contestants act like being divorced is scandalous, or why you can't have alliances on The Amazing Race . Again, you just take the story as a story. Discuss .

The Service model. There are people who really do spend a lot of time just telling you what happened without comment, where the primary purpose of the piece is to fill you in if you missed it. This is basically a human taking the place of your DVR if you forgot to set it.

So there you have it: the seven ways to write about television. Of course, this is less a set of distinct areas with sharp boundaries and more a color wheel where one thing blends into another, because you'll usually see elements of all of them in a good and comprehensive piece of writing, but most of us are more interested in some of these kinds of writing than others, and it's good to have a sense of the landscape when you're looking for a home.

*These are ways, I should note, to write commentary. There is also a world of more traditional reporting, including profiles and breaking news, that's a separate issue entirely. That, in turn, is subdivided into business reporting (who's got a deal with which studio), show reporting (stories about production and creation), and the weird world of plot reporting (news stories about fictional characters — so-and-so will die, so-and-so will have an affair with so-and-so).

New York Takes Crucial Step Toward Making Congestion Pricing a Reality

The board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to approve a new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan. The plan still faces challenges from six lawsuits before it can begin in June.

Multiple cars are stopped at a traffic light at a Manhattan intersection. A person responsible for controlling traffic stands nearby wearing a yellow reflective vest.

By Winnie Hu and Ana Ley

New York City completed a crucial final step on Wednesday in a decades-long effort to become the first American city to roll out a comprehensive congestion pricing program, one that aims to push motorists out of their cars and onto mass transit by charging new tolls to drive into Midtown and Lower Manhattan.

The program could start as early as mid-June after the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state agency that will install and manage the program, voted 11-to-1 to approve the final tolling rates, which will charge most passenger cars $15 a day to enter at 60th Street and below in Manhattan. The program is expected to reduce traffic and raise $1 billion annually for public transit improvements.

It was a historic moment for New York’s leaders and transportation advocates after decades of failed attempts to advance congestion pricing even as other gridlocked cities around the world, including London, Stockholm and Singapore, proved that similar programs could reduce traffic and pollution.

While other American cities have introduced related concepts by establishing toll roads or closing streets to traffic, the plan in New York is unmatched in ambition and scale.

Congestion pricing is expected to reduce the number of vehicles that enter Lower Manhattan by about 17 percent, according to a November study by an advisory committee reporting to the M.T.A. The report also said that the total number of miles driven in 28 counties across the region would be reduced.

“This was the right thing to do,” Janno Lieber, the authority’s chairman and chief executive, said after the vote. “New York has more traffic than any place in the United States, and now we’re doing something about it.”

Congestion pricing has long been a hard sell in New York, where many people commute by car from the boroughs outside of Manhattan and the suburbs, in part because some of them do not have access to public transit.

New York State legislators finally approved congestion pricing in 2019 after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo helped push it through. A series of recent breakdowns in the city’s subway system had underscored the need for billions of dollars to update its aging infrastructure.

It has taken another five years to reach the starting line. Before the tolling program can begin, it must be reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration, which is expected to approve it.

Congestion pricing also faces legal challenges from six lawsuits that have been brought by elected officials and residents from across the New York region. Opponents have increasingly mobilized against the program in recent months, citing the cost of the tolls and the potential environmental effects from shifting traffic and pollution to other areas as drivers avoid the tolls.

A court hearing is scheduled for April 3 and 4 on a lawsuit brought by the State of New Jersey, which is seen as the most serious legal challenge. The mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., Mark J. Sokolich, has filed a related lawsuit.

Four more lawsuits have been brought in New York: by Ed Day, the Rockland County executive; by Vito Fossella, the Staten Island borough president, and the United Federation of Teachers; and by two separate groups of city residents.

Amid the litigation, M.T.A. officials have suspended some capital construction projects that were to be paid for by the program, and they said at a committee meeting on Monday that crucial work to modernize subway signals on the A and C lines had been delayed.

Nearly all the toll readers have been installed, and will automatically charge drivers for entering the designated congestion zone at 60th Street or below. There is no toll for leaving the zone or driving around in it. Through traffic on Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and the West Side Highway will not be tolled.

Under the final tolling structure, which was based on recommendations by the advisory panel, most passenger vehicles will be charged $15 a day from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. The toll will be $24 for small trucks and charter buses, and will rise to $36 for large trucks and tour buses. It will be $7.50 for motorcycles.

Those tolls will be discounted by 75 percent at night, dropping the cost for a passenger vehicle to $3.75.

Fares will go up by $1.25 for taxis and black car services, and by $2.50 for Uber and Lyft. Passengers will be responsible for paying the new fees, and they will be added to every ride that begins, ends or occurs within the congestion zone. There will be no nighttime discounts. (The new fees come on top of an existing congestion surcharge that was imposed on for-hire vehicles in 2019.)

The tolls will mostly be collected using the E-ZPass system. Electronic detection points have been placed at entrances and exits to the tolling zone. Drivers who do not use an E-ZPass will pay significantly higher fees — for instance, $22.50 instead of $15 during peak hours for passenger vehicles.

Emergency vehicles like fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, as well as vehicles carrying people with disabilities, were exempted from the new tolls under the state’s congestion pricing legislation .

As for discounts, low-income drivers who make less than $50,000 annually can apply to receive half off the daytime toll after their first 10 trips in a calendar month. In addition, low-income residents of the congestion zone who make less than $60,000 a year can apply for a state tax credit.

All drivers entering the zone directly from four tolled tunnels — the Lincoln, Holland, Hugh L. Carey and Queens-Midtown — will receive a “crossing credit” that will be applied against the daytime toll. The credit will be $5 round-trip for passenger vehicles, $12 for small trucks and intercity and charter buses, $20 for large trucks and tour buses, and $2.50 for motorcycles. No credits will be offered at night.

For a sport that has soared in popularity the past 12 months, Monday will be a showcase of its biggest stars and most captivating storylines.

The action will start with what is likely the most anticipated matchup in college basketball, men’s or women’s, this season, with 1 seed Iowa (32-4, 15-3 Big Ten) facing off against 3 seed LSU (31-5, 13-3 SEC) at MVP Arena in Albany, New York. It's a rematch of the 2023 national championship game, which the Tigers won 102-85, though it is perhaps most well-known for the interactions between LSU’s Angel Reese and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, both first-team All-Americans, in the final minutes of the contest. The Tigers will try to become the first repeat national champion since UConn in 2015 and 2016.

The second of the two games isn’t lacking in star power, either. USC (29-5, 13-5 Pac-12), the 1 seed in the region, will take on 3 seed UConn (32-5, 18-0 Big East) in a matchup that will feature two of the sport’s most recognizable figures — USC freshman phenom JuJu Watkins and UConn’s Paige Bueckers — on opposing sidelines at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. The 11-time national champion Huskies are seeking their first NCAA title since 2016, while the Trojans, an early powerhouse in the sport that won two titles in the 1980s, are trying to get to their first Final Four since 1986.

Colorado Buffaloes guard J'Vonne Hadley (1) lays the ball up against Marquette Golden Eagles forward

Transfer Guard J'Vonne Hadley to Meet With MSU Via Zoom

Colorado transfer guard J'Vonne Hadley will meet with Michigan State over Zoom on Monday.

  • Author: Aidan Champion

In this story:

Shortly after his team's NCAA Tournament loss to Marquette in the Round of 32, Colorado guard J'Vonne Hadley told On3 he would be entering the transfer portal.

We reported on Thursday that Michigan State was one of the initial 16 teams to reach out to Hadley. On Sunday, Joe Tipton of On3 reported Hadley will be having a Zoom meeting with the Spartans on Monday.

Hadley finished the 2023-24 season fourth on Colorado's team in scoring at 11.6 points per game, a big leap from his 8.0 points-per-game average the season before. He only played 22 games in that 2022-23 season due to injury.

The senior guard also finished this season second on the team in rebounds per game (7.0), assists per game (2.4), and steals per game (1.2) while also shooting 41.7% from deep. Hadley helped lead the Buffaloes to a program-record 26 wins and a spot in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game, where they fell to Oregon.

Following Colorado's win over Boise State in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament, Hadley helped will the Buffaloes to their Round of 64 victory over Florida with a 16-point, six-rebound, and four-assist performance.

Hadley has spent two seasons with Colorado after transferring from Indian Hills Community College. In his 58 games as a Buffalo, the 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard has totaled 1,797 points, 346 rebounds, and 117 assists.

Hadley started his collegiate career at Northwestern, where he played just 13 games before transferring to Indian Hills for his sophomore season. In his lone season with the Warriors, Hadley earned NJCAA Division I first-team All-America honors. He helped lead the program to a NJCAA Region XI regular season title, the region championship and the NJCAA North Central District Championship.

With MSU losing star guard Tyson Walker and his fellow backcourt partner, AJ Hoggard, still deciding if his run with the Spartans has come to an end, adding an experienced guard like Hadley could do wonders for a team that is going to be very young next season.

Colorado transfer guard J’Vonne Hadley will have Zoom meetings with both Michigan State and Iowa State tomorrow, he tells @On3sports . Hadley says he plans to make a decision in the next week or so. https://t.co/cgdHXUfOU1 https://t.co/caaa85z5bq pic.twitter.com/LFRZRmb4CK — Joe Tipton (@TiptonEdits) April 1, 2024

History of Television in India

Television came to India on 15th September 1959 as an experiment where experimental transmission was done from Delhi. The television broadcasts started in India under All India Radio (AIR). In 1976, Doordarshan became a separate department independent of All India Radio. The early programmes on the experimental broadcasts were generally educational programmes for school children and farmers.

Doordarshan has evolved over the years. It had a monopoly as it was the only channel available to the Indian television audience. However, today, we have many channels other than Doordarshan. This change occurred in the 1990s with the arrival of private channels. Several regional channels came into the television scene during this period. Apart from the regional channels, a host of international channels like CNN, BBC and Discovery are also available to the Indian television audience. There is something for everyone to watch with different categories of channels like 24-hour news channels, movie channels, religious channels, and cartoon channels.

Impact of Television on Our Daily Lives

Television has become an integral part of our daily lives. It has the power to influence our lives in many ways. This influence can have both positive and negative results. On the positive side, Television can be an excellent teacher. It is used as a wonderful medium for mass education, as many educational channels like Discovery help in increasing scientific knowledge. With the help of Television, we stay updated with the latest news and information happening across the globe. Thus, it connects us with the world. It never makes us feel alone as it is a good source of entertainment. We can also spend some fun time with family by watching a show or match on TV. Moreover, Television provides opportunities for many people to showcase their talent in reality shows.

On the other hand, Television has its disadvantages. Too much Television can distract you from other activities, like reading, sports, studies, etc. Many people are addicted to TV, watching their favourite TV programmes. Due to this, a lot of time gets wasted, and people become obese and lazy. Many television programs have a terrible effect on children’s brains and influence them towards criminal activities. Children try to imitate their favourite character, due to which they get involved in wrong actions such as drinking alcohol, smoking, wearing inappropriate dresses, etc. Not only children but adults are also get influenced by Television when they view various product ads. These ads attract attention, and we try to purchase them without giving a single thought to whether we need them or not. We buy them for fashion and to show off.

Television in itself is neither good nor bad. It is just another medium of communication. The positive and negative effects depend upon how we use them. So, we must try to use Television as per our necessity, instead of getting addicted to it.

Women’s March Madness highlights: South Carolina, NC State heading to Final Four

After an exciting conclusion to the Sweet 16 round , the women’s NCAA Tournament moved into the Elite Eight on Sunday with a pair of afternoon games pitting two No. 1 seeds against the No. 3-seeded teams in their region. (In fact, the other two Elite Eight games on Monday will also feature a No. 1 seed vs. a No. 3 seed .)

Undefeated South Carolina (35-0) and coach Dawn Staley earned a trip to their fourth straight Final Four, holding off a late challenge from Oregon State, 70-58, in Albany, New York. In Portland, Oregon, NC State led wire-to-wire and knocked out No. 1 seed Texas, 76-66.

Women’s March Madness games today

Here is the full schedule for Sunday’s NCAA women’s tournament games .

  • (1) South Carolina 70, (3) Oregon State 58
  • (3) N.C. State 76, (1) Texas 66

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA basketball bracket, scores, schedules, teams and more.

NC State knocks out No. 1 Texas behind Aziaha James

N.C. State has returned to the Final Four.

The third-seeded Wolfpack (31-6) defeated No. 1 seed Texas (33-5), 76-66, in the Regional 4 Final on Sunday for the program’s second trip to the national semifinal and first since 1998. For N.C. State and head coach Wes Moore, it was mission accomplished for a team that earned No. 1 seeds in 2021 and 2022 but could not win the region.

N.C. State led wire-to-wire and staved off any Texas comeback attempts by relying on its three-point shooting. At one point in the second half, N.C. State led by 18 points and withstood a Longhorns charge that brought the margin to six in the third quarter. As a team, the Wolfpack went 9 of 18 from beyond the arc.

Aziaha James had 21 of her 27 points in the first 20 minutes and had seven threes – none bigger than the one she nailed with 3:46 left to give N.C. State a 10-point lead. River Baldwin scored all 16 of her points in the second half. The Wolfpack went 19-for-25 from the free-throw line.

Madison Booker had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists to pace Texas.

N.C. State will face South Carolina on Friday in Cleveland.

As the women’s program celebrated, the N.C. State men’s team was in the opening minutes of its own Elite Eight battle against Duke.

Texas makes up some ground vs. NC State

The Longhorns had plenty of ground to make up in the second half if they wanted to make the Final Four and started by cutting the Wolfpack’s lead to single digits at 57-48 going into the fourth quarter.

The Longhorns made five of six shots to close the quarter and were on an 11-3 run to cut the lead to six before Aziaha James (24 points) nailed her sixth 3-pointer of the game. A three from MiMi Collins earlier also gave N.C. State some breathing room.

N.C. State is 8-for-15 from beyond the (disputed, and potentially inaccurate) arc, while the Longhorns only have four attempts from three and relied on going inside for scoring in the third.

NC State's Aziaha James hits five threes in dominant first half

Someone forgot to tell Aziaha James the 3-point line is mismarked.

The junior NC State guard, who typically shoots just 32.5% from three, was perfect from long-distance in the first half, hitting five treys on her way to 21 points, helping lift the third-seeded Wolfpack to a 43-31 lead over top-seeded Texas at the break.

In addition to James, Mimi Collins also hit her only attempt from deep. Three other NC State attempts from three missed, but when you’re shooting 6-of-9 over the team whose coach is nicknamed “the Secretary of Defense,” it’s a good night.

Besides James, who also grabbed five rebounds, Saniya Rivers scored nine for NC State, and Zoe Brooks chipped in eight. Texas has 10 offensive boards, but that doesn’t matter much when you’re shooting just 34% from the field. NC State, meanwhile, is at 48%.

Texas closed the second quarter by hitting four of five looks to cut the lead to 12 — it had been as much as 18 — but the Longhorns have a tall task ahead of them in the second half. Freshman point Madison Booker, an All-American, leads UT with eight points but she’s just 4-of-13 from the field so far.

Officials find problems with 3-point lines before NC State-Texas

Sunday's women's NCAA Tournament game in Portland, Oregon, took a curious twist before tip-off when officials discovered the 3-point lines weren't the same distance on both sides of the court.

Under NCAA rules adopted in the 2021-22 season, the women's 3-point line was set at 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches. However, the spaces from the top of the key to the 3-point line at the Moda Center appeared to be different. When the NCAA was asked to measure about 30 minutes before top-seeded Texas and No. 3 seed N.C. State were set to tip off, they discovered that was indeed the case. – Read Steve Gardner's story here.

NC State off to fast start vs. Texas

Six points in 44 seconds is one way to take a lead.

NC State finished the first quarter hitting 4-of-4 field goals — while holding Texas to just 2-of-10 from the floor — to take a 19-14 lead going into the second quarter. Saniya Rivers' pretty pull-up at the end of the first period put the cap on an 8-2 run from the third-seeded Wolfpack.

But the real star of the first quarter was NC State guard Aziaha James, who already has 10 — yes, 10 — points, hitting 4-of-6 looks, including both tries from the (maybe mismarked) 3-point line.

One troubling trend for the Wolfpack, though: Texas already has seven offensive boards, and has scored four points off those second chances. NC State will have to get on the glass — and cut down on turnovers, where the Wolfpack already has five — if it wants to win this game.

Opinion: Why South Carolina is never truly threatened

ALBANY, N.Y. — South Carolina sucks the oxygen out of the room and the hope from an opponent’s heart.

With a roster so deep you can barely see the end of it, South Carolina is never truly in trouble. Oh, an opponent might think so, staying within striking distance and feeling as if they can overtake the Gamecocks with another bucket or two.

Little do they know South Carolina is just biding its time. Until BOOM! The Gamecocks take off on a run and their opponent is left wondering what the heck just happened and checking for tread marks on their back.

Take Sunday’s game against Oregon State. Read Nancy Armour’s column here .

South Carolina reaches fourth straight Final Four

The quest for a perfect season continues for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

South Carolina used its depth and aggressiveness on the boards to hold off Oregon State for a 70-58 victory in the Albany 1 regional final.

South Carolina led by 12 at the start of the final period, but Oregon State clawed its way back to cut the margin to four with just under four minutes to play. However, the Beavers did not score the rest of the way as USC pulled away.

South Carolina (36-0) had nine different players score, led by freshman guard Tessa Johnson with 15 points off the bench.

It's the fourth consecutive Final Four berth for the Gamecocks and coach Dawn Staley as they look to become the first women's team since UConn in 2016 to go undefeated and win a national championship.

South Carolina pulling away in third quarter

A 12-0 run late in the third quarter has South Carolina in prime position to claim the first spot in the women's Final Four.

The Gamecocks hold a 58-46 lead over Oregon State with one quarter to play.

After the Beavers had cut the lead to two points, Raven Johnson and Tessa Johnson connected on 3-point shots to fuel the USC run. South Carolina, the nation's best 3-point shooting team, hit just two of its first 15 attempts from beyond the arc as Oregon State kept the game close.

USC has also enjoyed a sizable advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Beavers 37-26, with 18 of those coming on the offensive end.

Two key Oregon State players have three fouls

Foul trouble could be an important factor in Oregon State's efforts to upset South Carolina and advance to this year's women's Final Four.

Two important members of the Beavers' front line have been forced to spend extended time on the bench during the first half as they trail the top-seeded Gamecocks 37-33 at the break.

Timea Gardiner picked up her third foul midway through the second quarter, and center Raegan Beers was called for her third on what appeared to be a questionable call with just under a minute to play in the half.

However, Oregon State has managed to keep the game close by hitting 6-of-14 shots from 3-point range.

Eight different South Carolina players have scored in the first 20 minutes of action, with guard Bree Hall leading the way with seven.

South Carolina, Oregon State off to slow start

Neither team has been particularly sharp in the early going of today's first regional final.

South Carolina hit just two of its first nine field-goal attempts and Oregon State committed four turnovers to keep the scoring low after one quarter of play.

The top-seeded Gamecocks owned an 18-14 lead.

USC built an eight-point advantage behind five points from guard Bree Hall, but Oregon State cut into the margin as sophomore Lily Hansford came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers late in the period.

Both teams finished the first 10 minutes shooting under 37% from the floor.

Women’s March Madness players to watch today

  • South Carolina G Raven Johnson (8.2 ppg, 4.9 apg, 35.3% 3pt), hit all three of her 3-point attempts in the regional semifinal win over Indiana, including a crucial one in the game's final minute.
  • Oregon State F Timea Gardiner (11.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg), the Beavers' leading scorer with 21 points in the win over Notre Dame, she also pulled down 11 rebounds and handed out four assists. She's upped her scoring average to 16.7 points per game in the tournament.
  • Texas G Madison Booker  (16.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 5.0 apg), the talented freshman was held to just 6 points against Gonzaga while battling foul trouble.
  • N.C. State G Aziaha James (16.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg), the junior came up big in an upset of Stanford by scoring a game-high 29 points, including 10-of-11 from the free throw line.

LA Times removes 'dirty debutantes' reference in controversial LSU column

After some  scathing criticism from LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey , the Los Angeles Times has  updated a column  it published before Saturday's LSU-UCLA matchup because it "did not meet Times editorial standards."

Mulkey went on an extended rant over what she called "sexist" language in the column, which originally called the game vs. UCLA a battle of "good vs. evil." In particular, Mulkey objected to the description of her defending NCAA champion Lady Tigers as "dirty debutantes."

That phrase, along with references to LSU as "villains," and references to UCLA as "milk and cookies" and "America's sweethearts" were also removed from the column (though "America’s sweethearts vs. its basketball villains" remained in the headline  and the online link ). – Steve Gardner and Nancy Armour

Iowa's Molly Davis doubtful for LSU rematch

Iowa is likely to be without Molly Davis in the Elite Eight.

Hawkeyes coach Lisa Bluder said Sunday she doesn’t expect Davis to play against LSU, a rematch of last year’s national title game.

“I’m really disappointed,” Bluder said. “I really thought she’d be back for the tournament, I really did.”

Davis hurt her right knee in Iowa’s regular-season finale against Ohio State. The injury looked bad initially – she had to be carried off the floor and was in a wheelchair for the Senior Day celebrations – but Bluder said the following day there was still a possibility of Davis playing during the postseason. She’s been doing intensive physical therapy since then, but was in warm-ups for Saturday’s Sweet 16 game.

Davis played in all 30 regular-season games this year, starting all but three. The fifth-year senior averaged 6.1 points and is second to Caitlin Clark with 93 assists. – Nancy Armour

LSU's Angel Reese and Flau'ja e Johnson did just enough to lift the third-seeded Tigers past the No. 2 seeded UCLA and send Kim Mulkey 's squad back to the Elite Eight. Caitlin Clark and Iowa made sure the tournament would have the rematch everyone craved when the No. 1 seeded Hawkeyes rolled past Colorado in the next game to set up Iowa vs. LSU round two on Monday night.

The third game of the day nearly saw the first top seed go down, but JuJu Watkins and No. 1 Southern California held off a determined Baylor , the fifth seed in the region, in a nail-biter. In the nightcap, Paige Bueckers and No. 3 seed UConn took down No. 7 seed Duke .

Conservatives Are Getting Comfortable Talking Openly About a National Abortion Ban

After this week’s oral argument, few court watchers believe the Supreme Court is now ready to limit the Food and Drug Administration’s authority to approve mifepristone , a drug used in more than half of all abortions , as opponents of abortion sought. At oral argument in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine , it did not appear that the plaintiff doctors persuaded the court that the law inflicted injuries that would give them standing to sue. The reason for the justices’ skepticism is not hard to find. The doctors built their case on a mountain of remote possibilities. Patients might suffer complications from mifepristone—a drug with an impressively low complication rate—and might seek treatment at emergency rooms, where the plaintiffs may happen to practice, when the plaintiffs might not be able to find another physician willing to intervene. And all of that might mean that the plaintiffs would have to act in violation of their conscience. But then again, it might not. That’s why this case seems dead on arrival: The justices seemed unwilling to engage in the sort of rank speculation the plaintiffs have in mind. If this chain of hypotheticals is enough, anyone can bring a constitutional challenge to any drug approval or any law.

But the case was also a vehicle for advancing ever more expansive conscience-based arguments that have become common currency among Christian conservatives—claims of the kind we have seen in well-known cases like the 2014 Hobby Lobby decision recognizing conscience objections to the contraceptive mandate of the Affordable Care Act or even last year’s ruling in 303 Creative v. Elenis that allowed a conservative Christian graphic designer to refuse to make custom websites for same-sex weddings.

Today, those with conscience-based objections seek more than to pray or dress in conformity with religious belief. They object to laws providing Americans access to health care or freedom from discrimination. Compliance with these laws, they claim, would make the objector complicit in the assertedly sinful conduct of others.

Objectors bringing this new generation of complicity-based conscience claims invite courts to deny other Americans the protections of the law. In the FDA case, the plaintiffs do not even seek an exemption from the law; through an expansive standing claim, the doctors claim the only way the court could protect their conscience is to strike down FDA approvals providing all Americans access to medication abortion. Simply having mifepristone on the market, they argue, risks making them complicit in abortion.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson zeroed in on the problems with this argument. She observed that Erin Hawley, the attorney for the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, had identified a “broad” and “narrow” idea of conscience. The “narrow” reading was straightforward: “participating in a procedure.” This reading had problems of its own: In fact, no doctor was obliged to prescribe mifepristone, and in any event, federal law provides doctors conscience protections.

Yet Hawley didn’t think complicity ended there. Jackson seemed confused. Did Hawley mean that a handful of other doctors who participated in post-abortion procedures, such as the removal of tissue, were also complicit? Or was Hawley asking the court to recognize the complicity claims of someone who worked in an emergency room where abortions took place, or handed an abortion provider a water bottle?

Jackson spotlighted a defining feature of “conscience-war” claims that one of us (Reva Siegel), writing with Douglas NeJaime, has identified : Conservatives assert ever-expanding complicity-based conscience claims, urging the government to accommodate their claims without making any provision for other Americans who would lose the protection of law. Appealing to the value of conscience obscures the material and dignitary harm that accommodating the objection inflicts on others.

Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar stressed this point: While the plaintiffs could not say their conscience had been or would be harmed, their claim to conscience obscured harm done to a variety of other parties. That includes the FDA, which had its own scientific judgments displaced, and the pharmaceutical industry, which relies on the FDA approval process to ensure some sort of uniform industry standards. First and foremost, it includes, as Prelogar noted, “women who need access to medication abortion .”

Conscience claims have been alluring to conservatives because, like colorblindness, they allow conservatives to speak as a “minority,” and to assert traditional family values as individual freedom claims. But there is a telling shift. When groups like Alliance Defending Freedom asserted complicity-based conscience claims at the time of Hobby Lobby , they worried about losing in a Supreme Court that was far less conservative—and about alienating a Republican Party that still prioritized electability rather than ideological purity.

By contrast, in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, ADF talked not only about protecting women or safeguarding conscience; it made claims around the Comstock Act, a symbol of Victorian sexual morality focused not on protecting fetal life but on discouraging illicit sex , that ADF seeks to reinvent as a de facto national abortion ban. ADF argued that FDA could not have had the authority to approve telehealth abortions in 2021 because the Comstock Act bars the mailing of abortion pills—and indeed, any abortion-related item. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito both seemed interested in transforming the 1873 Comstock Act into an abortion ban that American voters would never choose to enact. Alito seemed shy about mentioning Comstock by name, instead referring to the hard-to-recognize number in the U.S. Code. Thomas was not so reserved, all but telling attorneys for Danco, the maker of the name-brand mifepristone, that the Comstock Act barred the mailing of the drug.

The very fact that ADF wants to talk about the Comstock Act is remarkable. It seems unwise to hitch the anti-abortion movement’s star to a 19 th -century anti-vice movement known for “Comstockery”: censoring political speech, undermining democratic norms, and condemning any form of sex not intended for procreation .

Voters have already rejected state abortion bans. Just imagine what most Americans would make of it if an already unpopular Supreme Court interpreted a law from 1873 as a sweeping, punitive zombie abortion ban. But worrying about the public’s reaction assumes the movement is seeking to persuade voters rather than simply looking for ways to use power to enforce traditional family values and punish those who become pregnant or might provide them medical care. Anti-abortion groups are planning to revive enforcement of the Comstock Act if Donald Trump wins the presidency , claiming they would not need Congress to act .

The argument in the mifepristone case was a potent reminder of why conservatives have gravitated to conscience claims—and demonstrated the hidden harms that these claims can inflict on other Americans. But the conversation at the Supreme Court this week also suggested that conservatives are preparing to express the values underlying complicity-based conscience claims more openly. As it gains power, members of the anti-abortion movement seem increasingly ready to take off the mask.
