Welcome to our Department
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Guwahati is a centre for research and teaching composed of academics from eleven different disciplines: Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, History, Archaeology, Political Science, Geography, Development Studies. With its varied range of research interests and expertise, the department promotes interdisciplinary work in humanities and social sciences, offering projects, supervision and fellowships aimed to attract students and researchers from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds. Apart from its undergraduate B.Tech taught courses which include uniquely designed content offered by members of faculty, the department offers highly interdisciplinary areas of expertise and investigation in its MA and PhD programmes.

In the Btech program the Department of HSS offers compulsory elective courses for 24 credits. Electives are offered in 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th semesters only. Each individual course is of 6 credits.

Ph.D. Programme – Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. Admission Procedure. Please apply online PhD admission here: https://research.iitm.ac.in/ Overview. The DoHSS has a vibrant research community. Ph.D. admissions are carried out twice a year, in January and July.
The Ph.D. Programme in the Department is generally discipline oriented and runs in five disciplines (Economics, English, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology) and areas related to the Cell for Indian Science and Technology in Sanskrit.
With its varied range of research interests and expertise, the department promotes interdisciplinary work in humanities and social sciences, offering projects, supervision and fellowships aimed to attract students and researchers from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
The Department offers 2-year M.A. programs in Development Studies, Economics, and English Studies besides a robust PhD program and a huge basket of elective courses drawn from various domains of humanities and social sciences.
PhD. The curricula of the department aligned with its academic vision aim to cultivate critical and innovative thinking and impart training required to carry out highest level of multi- disciplinary research. The PhD program consists of both full time and part time students.
