The Ultimate Study Music Playlist

This is a playlist of my favorite study music. It’s great for homework, studying for exams, reading, and generally getting crap crossed off my many checklists.

I’ve been working on this playlist for several years, and it contains music (all non-lyrical) from a wide variety of genres and sources, including video game/anime/movie soundtracks. At the moment, it’s got about 240 songs for you to choose from.

Listening on another app? I’ve worked to mirror this study playlist to other services. Check them out below:

  • Spotify Study Music Playlist
  • Apple Music Study Playlist

If you’d like, you can study with me in another tab while this plays. You can also listen to the playlist on YouTube instead of on this page.

By the way – I create my own study music as well! If you’d like to give it a listen, here’s a playlist:

You can also follow me on Spotify or on YouTube if you want to be notified when new tracks are released.

Need even more study music?

Here are a few options.

Brain.fm – Music designed specifically to help you focus more effectively. It works really well for me, and I use it for around 50% of my research, writing, and reading sessions – the other half are mostly done with the playlist above.

Piano Study Playlist – If you’re in the mood for a more consistent playlist, check out this one full of solo piano tracks.

Coffitivity – Sometimes I’m in the mood for ambient noise instead of music, and the sounds of a bustling coffee shop are my personal favorite type.

Noisli – An ambient noise generator that lets you create your own mix using sounds like rain, thunder, fan, and white/brown/pink noise.

More Playlists

Work Vibes – My personal playlist of “getting-stuff-done” music. Most of the tracks here have vocals, so I wouldn’t read or study intently with them. But they’re great for crushing emails, working on design projects, or doing other work where I simply need to execute quickly.

Tom’s Workout Playlist – A collection of the tracks that usually accompany me to the gym.

Nature has a mixtape. The U.N. hopes young people will listen to it

Artists UMI (left) and Louis VI (right) teamed up with the Museum for the United Nations - UN Live to re-release songs with nature sounds for Earth Day.

When London-based hip hop artist Louis VI looked at social media over the past few years, he kept seeing the same image: orange skies from wildfire smoke.

"It was one of those strange, eerily beautiful phenomenons that's, you know, Mother Nature going like, 'Yo, this is not right,'" he said.

The verses in his song, 'Orange Skies,' explore themes of environmental decay.

"Calling climate justice, it's about time

'Cause our Black people on the front line

Ain't you seeing what I'm seeing

Hurricanes and fires blazing, flooding in Savannah basin."

The song was originally released last year with vocals and instruments, but it's been remixed with a new featured artist: nature.

The new track was created as part of an advocacy and fundraising project called Sounds Right, a partnership between the United Nations and artists like Ellie Goulding, Brian Eno, and the estate of the late David Bowie. Songs produced for the project will generate streaming royalties for conservation organizations.

Artist Louis VI's song 'Orange Skies' (feat. NATURE) protests environmental degradation.

Louis VI's remix features rainforest sounds in protest of deforestation that can be caused by palm oil production in Southeast Asia, where the sounds were recorded.

Manufacturers, he said, are "clearing spaces in the jungle [in Borneo, an island in Southeast Asia] to plant a monoculture of palm oil trees, which is really bad for biodiversity and also makes it more susceptible to fire."

Why deforestation means less rain in tropical forests

After the verse, "Chopping down our forests 'til we cough smoke," there's a five-second recording of a chainsaw before the music resumes.

"I purposely put in sounds that weren't necessarily just beautiful because I wanted a range of sounds of nature," said Louis VI. The sounds, collected by the label Biophonica, also include an orangutan, cicadas, and a blue-headed hummingbird, among others.

'Orange Skies' ends on the dire note of a fire consuming a rainforest. The sound drowns out the vocals.

Why reaching young people matters

The project was created by the Museum for the United Nations - UN Live , an arm of the U.N. that aims to engage people — especially young people — through pop culture.

"It's one of the most powerful ways to reach people in their everyday lives and bring them into conversation about the biggest issues of our time, including biodiversity conservation," said Gabriel Smales, the global program director for Sounds Rights at UN Live, who helped launch the initiative.

A 2024 Harvard survey of around two thousand 18-to-29-year-olds in the U.S. found that nearly half of respondents felt that the government should "do more to curb climate change, even at the expense of economic growth," though only 6% of respondents listed environmental issues as their top concern.

Coping with climate change: Advice for kids — from kids

Efforts to raise awareness about climate change among young people are key to conservation efforts, according to Raisa "Ray" Barrera, the D.C. area program manager at the Student Conservation Association . The nonprofit connects youth with conservation projects like planting trees and building trails.

"I'd love to say that 100% of the youth that come into our programs are well aware of the environmental impacts of climate change," Barrera said. "But I'd be lying if I said that."

Smales, of UN Live, said that the scale of the climate crisis can feel insurmountable, and young people don't always know what to do, "but we have a really simple concept where by listening to a track featuring the sounds of nature, you'll be directing royalties back to conservation initiatives."

Louis VI hopes that his song has enough nature sounds to give those listeners a childlike sense of wonder towards the outside world — but is catchy enough to have widespread appeal.

Louis VI hopes to draw in listeners with his music, and inspire them with the nature sounds in 'Orange Skies.'

"At the end of the day," Louis VI said, "The music is what needs to bring people in. It's the sugar around the slightly more difficult-to-swallow medicine of the subject."

He said one of his fears is being in nature — and hearing complete silence.

"When people seek peace and silence, I don't actually think they're looking for true silence," Louis VI said. "What they're actually looking for is the sound of nature, because we evolved for that to mean that all's OK. When you hear birdsong, you know that there's no predator around."

Nature as meditation

Rather than reflecting the realities of environmental destruction like Louis VI's track, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter UMI takes a different approach.

"The deepest intention I have with my music is for it to be a feeling, where people don't even realize it's happening, but they feel soothed, they feel at ease," she said.

Pod Corner: 'The Anti-Dread Climate Podcast'

UMI starts her live shows with a meditation to calm her audience. Because being in nature has given her such a sense of peace, she wants listeners to experience that feeling.

"Nature is everything," UMI said, adding that she often goes outside when she has writer's block.

Singer-songwriter UMI hopes her music will help listeners feel calm.

"Something about being barefoot in the grass helps calm my mind when I'm feeling anxious," UMI said. "I feel like you can't help but to care about something that does so much for you."

The remix of her 2023 song 'wherever u r' features V from the K-pop band BTS, as well as some of the roughly five-thousand voice memos she said she's collected on her phone.

"If I see something beautiful, if I'm in a beautiful moment, I think I'm more interested in capturing the sound than the image of it," UMI said.

And now — listeners can hear them too.

The songs ( feat. NATURE ) can be found on major music streaming platforms.

Travis Kelce Is ‘Secure and Fine’ With Taylor Swift Writing Songs About Him And Others (Exclusive)

Travis Kelce Is Secure and Fine With Taylor Swift Writing Songs About Him

Travis Kelce has no issue with being girlfriend Taylor Swift ’s muse.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, seemingly inspired two tracks on Swift’s 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , but he wasn’t surprised by the subtle shout-outs .

“He heard everything before it was released. He is so proud of [her] and understands and accepts that being with her means being a part of her music,” a source exclusively tells Us Weekly . “And he’s secure and fine with it.”

Kelce isn’t the only person referenced on TTPD , which dropped on April 19. Swifties have been dissecting the record since its release, trying to pin down which songs are about Joe Alwyn , whom Swift, 34, dated from 2016 to 2023, and Matty Healy , whom she had a months-long romance with in 2023. Swift and Healy, 35, reconnected after her split from Alwyn, 33, after being previously linked in 2014.

The source tells Us that Kelce is unfazed by Swift writing about past flames.

“Travis is understanding about the ex-boyfriend songs,” the insider says. “He recognizes that her past experiences are an important part of her expression.”

The source adds that just because there aren’t more Kelce-inspired songs on TTPD doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

“She has written other songs, some inspired by Travis, but they weren’t produced or part of the album,” the insider shares. “There wasn’t time for them to be part of the album. She’s kept some private and hasn’t released them yet. She has a journal and writes all the time.”

Swift references football in the lyrics to “The Alchemy” and “So High School,” both of which appear on TTPD .

“So when I touch down, call the amateurs and cut ‘em from the team,” Swift sings on “The Alchemy” before celebrating “a winning streak” and being “the greatest in the league.”

On “So High School,” she quips, “You know how to ball, I know Aristotle” and references the “Kiss, marry, kill” game. Kelce was asked to play the game with Swift, Ariana Grande and Katy Perry during a 2016 Afterbuzz TV appearance, which has since resurfaced .

“Damn, that’s messed up. I don’t want to kill any of them,” Kelce quipped during the interview. “Ariana, sorry, love you, but you’re gone. And then Taylor Swift would be the kiss. And what’s the last one? Katy Perry? Yeah, Katy Perry would be the marry.”

Swift and Kelce started dating in the summer of 2023. The pair confirmed their romance that September when Swift showed up to her first Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

Kelce has made it known that he isn’t intimidated by the extra attention that comes with dating Swift.

“I think it was all the home videos my mom used to have with the old camcorder, the handheld joint, at the house. I just always felt comfortable with the camera on me and the lights on me,” he told Extra ’s Billy Bush on the set of his new Amazon Prime Video game show Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? in an interview published on Thursday, April 25.

“I love a good challenge . I get excited for a challenge,” he continued. “Something that I haven’t done before is something that really makes me focus … and there’s something about that that I got a love for.”

Swift, meanwhile, is enjoying how her romance with Kelce differs from past relationships that were kept more under wraps.

“[It’s] been so refreshing for Taylor not to feel the need to hide with Travis,” a second source exclusively told Us earlier this month. “He makes her feel safe  and protected like she has the freedom to be and act however she wants.”

Zach Bryan dedicates song to Caitlin Clark, thanks Des Moines in Wells Fargo Arena concert

homework time song

Hey Iowa concertgoers, Zach Bryan hopes you don’t hate his song.

No, it’s not brand new. In fact, it’s one of his earlier songs called “Condemned.”

Well, the crowd sang it alongside Bryan, so it’s probably safe to assume they like it.

Bryan mentioned that before several songs throughout his show in Des Moines on April 25, an entirely unnecessary line when you consider he’s a Grammy winner, an Academy of Country Music Awards winner and a musician who has two back-to-back shows at the Wells Fargo Arena that kicked off Thursday night.

Donning an Iowa Hawkeyes Athletics T-shirt throughout the entire night, Bryan performed songs “East Side of Sorrow,” “Fifth of May,” “Overtime,” “Burn, Burn, Burn,” “Hey Driver” and “Heading South.”

It’s the latter that prompted Bryan to tell the crowd how the song changed his life.

“I’m just surprised it changed my life forever,” he said, adding, “Thank you guys in Des Moines, Iowa, for making our dreams come true.”

Bryan, who headlined at the Hinterland Music Festival last year, performed in Iowa as part of “The Quittin' Time Tour.”

Here are three memorable moments from the night in case you missed the show, or want to relive it.

Caitlin Clark collects another shoutout, this time from Zach Bryan

Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft and the face of college basketball, once again was given some attention during a Wells Fargo Arena concert.

“This one’s for Caitlin Clark,” Bryan called out before launching into “Revival” as part of the encore performance.

Lil Wayne called the athlete “dope” at his Wells Fargo Arena concert earlier in April and country star Tim McGraw wore a Clark jersey during his concert at the arena in March.

‘You guys got me?’ Zach Bryan offers storytelling and lots of singing at Des Moines, Iowa concert

That’s what Bryan asked the crowd several times throughout the night, prompting his fans to sing especially loud and clear during songs “Dawns” and “I Remember Everything,” the latter of which featured Kacey Musgraves and went No.1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

“I don’t deserve any of you,” Bryan said after the song. “Thank you, guys, so much.”

Bryan returned the energy the crowd gave all night and shared tidbits about several songs.

That included for “28,” the age he turned earlier this month. He described how he realized how lucky he was to be in his friends' presence while they went out bowling, and how grateful he was to be performing Thursday night.

Bryan also shared how it was his girlfriend’s suggestion to have actor Matthew McConaughey star in his music video, “Nine Ball,” which was nominated for Video of the Year for the CMT Music Awards earlier this year.

“I was like, ‘You’re crazy. No way in hell that’s ever going to happen,’” Bryan recounted before doing an impression of McConaughey’s iconic response.

“Alright, alright, alright.”

There’s no “Quittin' Time” at a Zach Bryan concert

Bryan and the band exited after “Quittin' Time,” the last song of the night before the encore. But the audience wasn't ready to let the country musician be finished for the night, and it was clear he wasn't done either.

Bryan and the band launched into about 10 minutes of theatrics throughout the encore performance of “Revival.” That included a banjo player pretending to faint and returning to consciousness with a solo, beer — presumably — being splashed on stage and crew members launching what appeared to be merchandise into the crowd.

Who opened for Zach Bryan at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa?

Opening for the Bryan was Levi Turner, the country singer signed to Bryan’s label imprint, Belting Bronco Records, according to music publication Holler .

Following Turner was the Middle East, the Australian indie band whose performance in Des Moines is especially notable. That’s because their opening for Bryan on his tour is part of the indie band’s first shows outside Australia in 14 years, the Music reported .

Is Bandle the new Wordle? Song-guessing game builds buzz online

Bandle app

A new song-guessing game is taking over the internet, one melody at a time.

Bandle, which debuted as an app in December , is seeing an explosion in popularity on platforms like TikTok , Twitch and YouTube, where streamers and content creators are posting videos of themselves playing the game.

Every day, the game, which is free, gives players information about one song, including the year it was released. The player then listens to the track, instrument by instrument, starting with drums.

Players have the opportunity to guess the song at each layer, until they reach the vocals. If they still don’t guess it by then, they can get a text clue. Past songs have included everything from OutKast's "Hey Ya!” to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody."

Johann Levy, the game's creator who is based in France, said he was partially inspired by the success of the popular online puzzle game, Wordle .

In recent years, many game developers have capitalized on the success of Wordle by creating games with a similar format, including: Heardle, a different music-guessing game; Poeltl, a basketball player-guessing game; and Lewdle, a bad word-guessing game.

In 2022, “there was a Wordle craze with the world,” Levy told NBC News in a phone interview. “And then Heardle, and I thought I could do something like that as well.”

At first, Levy created a website to launch the game, which drew in up to 1,000 people at a time. But devoted gamers began requesting an easier way to play.

“Everybody’s asking me, ‘It’s a great game. I want to play all day. And how do I do that?’" Levy said. "… That’s how it became an app — just because people gave me the idea."

Levy said he used to use the program Garage Band and his iPad to recreate each layer of a track with the help of one collaborator. Now, he utilizes Logic Pro and templates. Some tracks can be completed in as little as 45 minutes, while others take as long as four hours.

Since its app launch, the game has since built buzz authentically, thanks in large part to the streamers. Levy credited them for helping give the game an organic marketing boost.

“I haven’t done any [marketing] at all whatsoever,” Levy said. “I don’t have the budget for that anyway. It spread with word of mouth.”

The game has a small Reddit thread , where Levy responds to players' feedback and posts updates on game statistics. On X , the Bandle Game account posts daily clues.

For some streamers, playing Bandle has become part of their content repertoire.

Anthony Fantano, a content creator and music reviewer, said he first heard about the game through some of his followers, who commented suggesting he give it a try.

"Sometimes I’m pretty bad at sort of, like, instantly recalling song titles and stuff like that on the fly," said Fantano, who goes by “The Needle Drop” on YouTube, where he has 2.8 million subscribers, and “The Needle Tok” on TikTok, where he has 1.5 million followers. "But, you know, it’s still a fun challenge."

Fantano said he enjoys seeing his followers react to the Bandle videos — even when he doesn't get the right answer. He's also enjoyed watching others online take part in it, such as the TikTok user "Noodles.Music.Dailies"

The user, who did not respond to NBC News' interview request, has become known for her videos which feature her playing the game while cuddling a dachshund.

In the last month, Levy said, seeing an influx of people playing his game has brought him joy, especially since he made the game in his spare time. His full-time job is in research and development, though he also plays the drums for fun.

“I have this alert on Google for the keyword ‘Bandle’ and each time there’s a new video, from anyone really, I watch that," he said.

Why Swifties Are Convinced ‘The Alchemy’ Is About Travis Kelce

AFC Championship - Kansas City Chiefs v Baltimore Ravens

F or most of The Tortured Poets Department , Taylor Swift puts the focus on her breakups with longtime partner Joe Alwyn and short-term boyfriend Matty Healy. But on “The Alchemy,” one of the (first part of the) double album’s final tracks, she seems ready to get back in the dating game. No surprise, fans are convinced “The Alchemy” is about Swift’s new love, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce . And it’s hard to argue with them; the track is basically 50 percent sports metaphors and football analogies.

taylor putting football references in the alchemy pic.twitter.com/70dNXZz8uT — cam 🪩 (@smackcam13) April 19, 2024

Some initially assumed the song’s title was a reference to Alwyn. Swifties have pointed out that he has been lyrically linked to the color gold (a precious metal alchemists of yore falsely claimed to be able to make from lead) throughout the billionaire pop star ’s discography. But here, the alchemy of which Swift speaks feels more in line with another one of Merriam-Webster’s definitions for the word: “the discovery of a universal cure for diseases.” And what is heartache if not a disease? Stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome is a heart condition brought on by stress and extreme emotions, both of which could definitely be described as symptoms of an especially bad split with someone who leaves his typewriter at your apartment.

Read more: ‘So Long, London’ Is a Classic Taylor Swift Track 5 Song

On the album’s title track , Swift talks about a crazy, stupid kind of love that binds her to a guy (all signs point to Healy) who is equally head over heels. She describes them as “modern idiots” who are mindlessly debating becoming artists-in-residence at the Chelsea Hotel. (“You’re not Dylan Thomas,” might be the most casually cruel lyric Swift has ever written.) By the time we get to “Alchemy,” we know that this over-the-top relationship of which she speaks has lost its luster, but she’s ready to fight again with this new one-of-a-kind guy. “These blokes warm the benches,” she declares, dissing those London boys she used to date. “We’ve been on a winning streak.”

Chugging white wine like Gatorade, Swift rushes towards the end zone singing, “So when I touch down/ Call the amateurs and cut ‘em from the team.” She notes that it’s been a while since she’s been in this position, but, when it comes to relationships, it’s win or go home for her and she’s all in. She implies, though, that she really has no choice: “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?” (Fans seemed excited for this pivot too, with one tweeting , “Getting to ‘The Alchemy’ and realizing we are free of the moody Brits.”)

But “The Alchemy” is more than platitudes tailor-made for a motivational locker room poster. Fans believe there are Easter eggs throughout the track that reference her relatively new relationship with Kelce. On the song’s bridge , when she sings, “Shirts off, and your friends lift you up, over their heads,” Swifties believe it is a nod to the viral Super Bowl momen t when Kelce’s brother and New Heights podcast partner, former Philadelphia Eagle Jason Kelce, went shirtless to root on his little brother.

Others think the line “I circled you on a map” was a cheeky reference to those who have joked that Swift put Kelce on the map with their relationship. Even Kelce has had fun with this notion, big upping the Swifties for their clever Halloween costumes despite the fact that they’re gently mocking him. Meanwhile, the line, “ He jokes that ‘It's heroin, but this time with an E ,’” has many applauding Kelce’s comic timing on a clever, if not a tad cold-blooded, shot at Healy, who has been open about his past heroin addiction .

Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me 🥹🤍 -The Alchemy #TSTTPD pic.twitter.com/1fneSr7OaM — ~Brittany~ (@bejeweledbritt) April 19, 2024

It’s another lyric in “The Alchemy” bridge, though, that has fans fully in their feelings: “Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me.” Many assume this is a reference to Swift’s sweet on-the-field moment with Kelce before he picked up the Vince Lombardi Trophy for winning his second Super Bowl in three years. “We'll all remember where we were when we realized ‘The Alchemy’ was about Travis Kelce,” a fan tweeted . (The track might also be her way of telegraphing to fans that she has heard the deepfake AI track that recently went viral for its chorus , “So happy that my Travieee made it to the big game.” Seriously, her mind .)

We'll all remember where we were when we realized The Alchemy was about Travis Kelce. — Alex Goldschmidt (@alexandergold) April 19, 2024

Others think the song’s tracklist placement is all too fitting, knowing Swift’s interest in numerology, if it’s about the baller who wears number 87. “Someone on TikTok just pointed out ‘The Alchemy’ is track 15 and 8 + 7 = 15,” a fan tweeted . “BYE.” Another wrote excitedly in all-caps, “THE ALCHEMY IS A TRAVIS SONG WE WON.”

"I love all these football references!!" - me, listening to The Alchemy as someone who has only cared about football for less than a year — Alex Goldschmidt (@alexandergold) April 19, 2024

The track describes an unexpected comeback, perhaps, a nod to Kelce for sweeping her off her feet when she thought she was down for the count. But it also could be about Swift getting back to herself. She has finally found the kind of all-consuming love she pines for throughout The Tortured Poets Department . Except this time, it’s with someone who she believes actually deserves it. Clear eyes, full hearts, Swift can’t lose.
