But if you want to break your procrastination habit, you can. It’s fixable. All you need is a solid support system and a few clever productivity tactics to keep your self-discipline and focus in check.

So instead of falling into the frantic last-minute cycle again , use this list of tools and strategies to push ahead and finish what needs to be done.  

1. Play That Music

Music boosts your energy and keeps you alert. So if you are distracted by the slightest of sounds in a usually quiet atmosphere, music can drown out any spontaneous interruptions. It also has a powerful effect on your mood and recall. When you select the right song to play while studying, writing a paper or posting in the discussion board, the tune can trigger your memory.

2. Find a Study Buddy

If you find it difficult to sit down and create a study guide for your next exam, team up with a few classmates to draft a master study guide. Assign each person a section to work on. Perhaps one of your teammates has a better understanding of the material in a specific section and can help you better grasp the concepts. Then, combine everyone’s work for a complete and comprehensive guide.

Being accountable to someone is often the drive we need to kick us into gear. Use a similar tactic to ensure your schoolwork is done on time. Ask someone to check on your progress periodically to assure you’re staying on task. This someone can be your spouse, a friend or even your children. Choose wisely, though. You want someone who is serious about helping and won’t try to bother you while you are working. Homework can often feel stressful and boring. Unfortunately, if you're in school it's a part of life. If you consistently dread doing homework, you should look into ways you can enjoy the task. This way, school will be more pleasant for you overall. You can start with subjects that interest you, give yourself breaks and rewards, and work on changing your mentality regarding homework in general.

Planning Homework Time

• It may help to take a few days to measure your natural ebb and flow of energy. You may find that, during late afternoon, you feel a sudden slump in energy. However, as it gets closer to the evening hours, you may suddenly have a boost in energy. Therefore, instead of doing homework after school, try to do your homework after dinner each night.
• You'll feel happier and more productive if you're studying during a time when you're experiencing a peak in energy. Homework will seem to go by faster, and you will not struggle as much to concentrate.

• You can alternate between subjects you like and dislike. This can help give you motivation while moving through subjects that bore you. For example, if you love science but hate history, do half of your science assignment, then half of your history one, and then return to science.

• Even small changes can make homework time more enjoyable. You could, for example, move your desk near the window. Natural light may lead to a more calming environment, and you can occasionally look up and enjoy the view.
• You can also think about studying outside the house. If you love hanging out at a local coffee shop, try doing your homework there. You can get a latte or a coffee as a treat as you move through your homework.

• You may have to experiment with different songs. Some songs may be distracting. If a song makes you want to get up and dance, for example, it may not the best to include on a homework playlist, as you will lose focus in your homework. Some people find that classical music is very helpful when studying.
• Not everyone can concentrate with music in the background. If you find music is making it harder for you to study, you may want to nix the playlists and focus on other means to enjoy your homework.

Giving Yourself Motivation

• Good examples of what to do during your breaks are taking walks, meditating, stretching, or getting yourself a snack.
• Many people find it's most effective to work in short spurts. You may want to plan to work in half hour to 45-minute intervals, for example, and then take a 5 to 10-minute break.
• Be careful with breaks, however. Make sure you time your breaks wisely so they don't end up running over. If you allow yourself a 10 minute Facebook break every 40 minutes, set a timer on your phone to make sure you do not end up procrastinating on social media for hours.

• Be careful who you include in a study group. While you want to be able to enjoy yourself, you also want to get work done. Choose people who are serious enough students that you won't end up distracted all night.
• Together as a group, you can brainstorm ways to have fun. For example, you can agree you'll do homework in silence for 40 minutes and then take a 15 minute break to chat.

• Be careful, however, not to do sloppy work. If you're trying to break a record, you may speed through your homework. Strive to work efficiently rather than quickly.
• Talk to your parents to see how the topic your studying may affect them in the present day.
• Be careful not to get distracted in this extra research or you’ll lose focus on your homework. Set a timer for yourself so you don’t spend too much time doing it.

Changing Your Mindset About Learning

• It can help to make a to-do list. Your studies are items you can check off the list, allowing you to relax and unwind. You'll also feel a sense of achievement with each item you check off your list.
• Stop and think about what you've accomplished when you finish your homework. Try to feel proud of yourself for getting your work done. You'll learn to work towards this sense of accomplishment in the future.

• If you dislike your writing assignments, pause and consider how good writing skills can help you get a job. If you dislike your computer class, try to keep in mind that basic computer skills will be important in college and the working world.

How to make homework fun – 9 ways to switch things up.

Homework.  This word holds different associations for different people. As a teacher, I’ve heard all sorts of opinions on the topic of homework and have been informed about all of the negative aspects of assigning homework for students. However, I don’t believe that setting homework is necessarily a bad choice. Not when it’s done correctly. Also, many schools still require that homework is set for students.

So, as teachers, how can we make sure we are approaching homework the right way, in order to provide enriching opportunities for student learning to take place? Well, here are a few simple ideas to get you started:

Use Task Cards

Task cards are so versatile and are the easiest way to get the same content out to your students that you would put on a worksheet, but in a more interesting format.

Here’s an example of how you can use them for homework. Say you’re working on revising perimeter with your students. Instead of giving them a quiz worksheet, break the questions up into task cards. Create a game out of the cards and ask them to complete a recording sheet as they work through the cards. Hey, presto! You’ve now got the student data you need to assess their knowledge of perimeter, all while your students have had fun playing a game with the task cards you sent them home with. Now, that’s a win-win.

Playing games is an effective way to keep students engaged in a task, and there are many fun games that you can use as homework activities. A great part about sending games home with kids for homework is that it encourages parents to get involved in their children’s learning. For example, if you’re having students work on their times table facts, you can use a game like  Times Table Bingo . This game is simple for students and parents to understand the rules of, and it allows children to use the strategies that they find most helpful for working out the times table facts.  

Make It Personal

Do you know what we all love talking about? Ourselves. Yep, and our students are no different. If you want to get them interested in homework again, give them a chance to share something about themselves. This not only keeps them engaged, but it also helps you get to know them better! Try Puzzles

Puzzles are such a fun educational tool! They can be used for almost any subject area and are especially easy to incorporate into your homework routine. One way this can be done is by using addition  puzzles . In the example shown below, students need to use their addition skills to put three numbers together that equal one hundred. You can adapt this strategy as you need to so that the puzzles focus on whichever learning area your students are spending their homework time on.

Set a Challenge

Setting a learning challenge can be a helpful motivator for kids. I have often used   holiday challenges   like the one shown below with my students, but there’s no need to wait until the holidays! Think of some different activities that suit the topics you’re covering in class and put together a challenge for your students to work on during their homework time. If you want to save yourself some planning time, I have some ready-made maths and literacy challenges available here .  

Make It Practical

Have you tried asking your students to do everyday tasks for homework, such as cooking? This is a great way to engage those learners who find it difficult to sit still and focus for long periods of time. Plus, it encourages parents to get involved too! Utilise Student Choice Boards

I’m an advocate for using student choice boards in the classroom, which is why I often talk about them in my posts. The great thing about choice boards is that you can easily combine more than one subject area in the one board and can switch up the options as often as you like. Remember That Less is More

When it comes to homework, teachers and students can tend to overcomplicate things. Although it can be tempting to pack as much into your homework routine as possible, homework is often much more effective when it is simple. Choose one or two activities that are easy for students to understand and let them spend their time on that. Remember that sometimes less is more.  

Give Your Students The Night Off

Every now and then there will be times when you and your students just need the night off. That’s when I like to use tokens like these  sweet ‘No Homework’ Passes   to make a night of no homework seem like a special, well-earned treat for students. Although, when your homework activities are as fun as the ideas above, your students might be a little disappointed to have the night off anyway!

5 Ways To Make College Homework More Fun

Even if you love your class subjects, doing lots of homework every day can be tiring, and it’s easy to lose steam especially when you have a lot going on in your life.

We all know that homework takes a lot of energy, and distractions abound especially when you’re not into what you’re studying. Plus, who wants to be stuck at home for hours and hours? If you feel stuck in your college coursework and don’t know how to regain interest in what you’re doing, try out the following ways to make homework less bland and more manageable.

1. Play music.

This idea depends on the subject for which you’re studying. Typically, you can get away with listening to music for subjects that are more process-based (such as math, chemistry problems, etc.) because you tend to be less “in your head” and can more easily keep track of your work even when Drake and Rihanna are jamming in the background.

Music (with words, that is) tends to be less helpful/more distracting for more idea-based types of homework, such as writing an essay. Listening to soft instrumental music may enhance your focus when writing, but if you listen to the U.S. Top 50 playlist when trying to finish a close-reading assignment on Ovid’s Metamorphoses , you might end up accidentally typing a couple of words from that Twenty One Pilots song into your document. Worse, you may lose an important train of thought for your analysis paper when trying to sing along with your favorite line of that Justin Bieber song you’ll never admit you enjoy just a little bit.

In short, listening to music can make homework time a lot more appealing, but you need to first determine if the subject you’re working on lends itself to being helped or hindered by background music.

2. Designate a certain snack to enjoy when you need to study.

If you know you’re going to eat those chocolate covered caramels from Trader Joe’s during your study  time, you’ll be stoked to do your homework! Associating a pleasurable activity with something slightly less pleasurable can make the experience much more tolerable.

You can even plan to do something interesting as a reward for after you finish your studying (although this shouldn’t be used as an excuse to rush through your work!)

3. Take homework outside.

If your homework doesn’t require a lot of physical materials, consider taking studying outside !

For example, if all you have to do tonight is finish up that dense literary theory passage by Walter Benjamin, who says you have to stay stuck in your apartment to finish it?

Take it to the beach, into the woods, or a grassy park nearby in your neighborhood. Oftentimes, all you need is a change of scenery to revive your interest in productivity, and this can work to your advantage when you feel too cooped up at home.

4. Find resources online.

More and more Youtubers these days are coming up with ways to make difficult subjects like applied physics and cell biology more palatable and easier to understand.

The internet is full of resources and explanations that differ greatly, which is great for different types of learners to find a teaching style that works well. If you’ve got a professor whose explanation of orbitals just doesn’t make sense to you, read or watch an explanation of the same topic by an instructor from a totally different university!

From videos to podcasts to other professors’ PowerPoints posted online, there is no shortage of explanations online for nearly any subjects you could be covering in class.

5. Invite a friend to study with you.

Know anyone in class looking for a study buddy ? Invite them over or go out to a coffee shop to study. This can be extremely helpful especially since your friend may have a better understanding of the respiratory system than you do, and you may know a lot about cell respiration that your friend can’t seem to grasp from your lectures.

Explaining concepts and teaching one another is a true test of concept mastery — if you can’t teach it, you don’t know it well enough. Of course, this suggestion only proves useful if the two of you can focus and avoid distractions (a giggle fest about that viral video should happen after you’re done working!). Some people just don’t get much done when a friend is around. However, working with classmates who are similarly motivated can be very empowering.

Even the most efficient and engaged college students can get a little stuck in the occasional monotony of studying each day. Sometimes all it takes is a little creativity to make studying more enjoyable. You should ideally be enjoying yourself for the most part anyway if you’re learning what you want to be learning!

If you want homework to be useful for your students’ learning, and to solve them successfully, know these eight tips on how to make homework fun.

How to make homework fun?

In recent months there has been constant news about the controversy of duties. There are defenders of the tasks, and others are totally against it. This controversy triggered, neither more nor less. In which parents refused to have their children do their homework during the weekends of November. It has also been viral the announcement of Ikea in which the company proposes more family dinners and fewer duties.

Here are some basic ideas to effective and duties that are not a nightmare for students:

• Custom. As far as possible, they should be adapted to the needs of each student.
• Long-term projects. Homework may include long projects that last several days, weeks, or even months.
• Create habits. These duties should also be aimed at creating study habits and good discipline.
• Expand knowledge. Instead of repeating what is explained in class, homework should be more focused on expanding knowledge.
• Breves. Especially for the little ones, they should brief and should focus on the basic skills: reading, writing, and operations with numbers (all in a very playful way).
• They are varied and practical. They must know how to apply those learned in the classroom to the world around them to relate it to everyday life. You must see the practicality of the task.
• Adequate level. Students must be able to do homework on their own. Therefore, the level must be adjusted.
• Amount. We cannot saturate students outside the classroom with large amounts of homework. Free time is also very important for your education and development.

First of all

Do not isolate him in his room to study in solitude, but invite him to sit by your side. If you also have some chores to do on the computer or in the kitchen, you can do them quietly by his side. Working together, the child will feel more involved and consoled. See that. His mother also has important tasks to complete. If you have to learn a story page or have to practice reading, you can make the situation more cheerful, how? Read it once, maybe with a nice tone or with a funny expression, gesticulate, and try to be funny. You will first laugh, but then you will see that the lesson will remain etched in your memory.

If returning to sit on that boring chair, to start over with the usual boring tasks, demotivate your child. Then it is time to recreate a new and stimulating study area, perhaps in the dining room sitting on an ottoman or kneeling on a soft carpet. The unusual atmosphere will seem very funny and will be motivated in the study. Every time he completes a task, compliments him, and reward him, your appreciation helps increase his self-esteem and move forward with greater positivity.

To learn a mathematical formula or a poem, help it by humming a melody, musicality is useful to memory and accelerates learning. Teach him to organize his tasks as if they were work commitments to be completed within specific dates.

Then you’ll know how breaking something down into an achievable and measurable goal makes it much more fun. Studying with friends is a bit of a minefield. It can be motivating and helpful, as you share ideas that you might not have thought of individually. Or you can end up having so much fun that not much studying actually happens.

All the same, if you can make it work (perhaps if there’s one very strict friend in the group who keeps you all on track), turning studying into a game with friends might just be the best way to combine studying with fun for the maximum amount of both. “Invent a game and play it with your friends” is a recipe for time-wasting much more than that kind of activity on your own, so be sure to keep it simple. You could set study-themed dares; for instance, in English literature, if you can’t come up with a quote to support a particular point for the truth, you have to write two paragraphs themed around that point for the dare.

Are you a stationery person? You’ll know if you are: if browsing in Paperchase seems more interesting than browsing in Topshop; if the delight of

every August is buying fresh supplies for September; if you own more blank notebooks for use on some future special occasion than you own filled notebooks that weren’t quite special enough to save.

If you have a desk full of lovely pens, pencils, note-paper, notebooks, stickers and goodness knows what else, now is the time to use them, and delight in them. Write in fancy fountain pen if that sounds like something you’d enjoy; it’s a bad idea to use it in your exam, but being forced to slow down a little when taking notes as you’re studying might help the information sink in better. Cover your notes in stickers if it means you’re more likely to reread them. After all, if it’s not to be used when you have important studying to do, why bother hoarding lovely stationery in the first place?

5. Try roleplay

For any subject with stories and characters – Theatre Studies, English Literature and History are the obvious examples – one way to get your head around the topics is to pretend that you are one of the characters, and roleplay as them for a while. What would Henry VIII choose for lunch? How would Marianne from Sense and Sensibility choose to have your room arranged? If Othello were suddenly transported into your body, would he be pleased, or disappointed?

Thinking these things through might seem silly, but they can test your knowledge of the subject you’re studying in a way that just going over your notes might not, opening up new avenues that you could explore – for instance, might it matter how old Henry VIII was at the time? What does that tell you about how his outlook changed during his lifetime? If you’re studying with a friend, you could try to have a conversation in character. You might not have enjoyed this kind of activity in the classroom, but if you really know your stuff, it becomes more rewarding and enjoyable – when you’re not just saying “I want something delicious because I’m a king” but thinking about the foods Henry VIII enjoyed specifically, what religious restrictions there might have been on his food choices, and how open he was to other people influencing his decisions.

6. Study somewhere different

Studying often gets boring simply because you don’t get a change of scene, unless you count going from your room to the library and back. Studying outside in the summer is tricky – there’s sunburn, glare on laptop screens and ants to interrupt you – but if you can find a shady spot in a garden or park, it can make the whole process feel less stressful, as well as making you less jealous of the people who get to have fun outdoors. If being outside isn’t an option, you could be somewhere else in your house. We don’t advise bringing your laptop into the bath but you could read a book or textbook there. Some people learn better by association, so you could assign different subjects to different rooms, and make sure you study each subject in the designated place. After all, the golden rule of studying is that nothing is silly if it helps you learn.

7. Challenge yourself

When you’re studying, as with when you’re at the gym, it’s sensible to pace yourself. Don’t demoralise yourself by taking on more than you can handle; instead, go slow and steady, with regular breaks, so that you can cope for the long haul. Except that’s really boring, isn’t it?

It’s a bad idea to challenge yourself to ridiculous things at the gym, because you can cause yourself long-term injury. But you’re not going to break your brain because you tried to do something that was a bit too tricky. If you’re bored witless by going over the same notes and the same ideas – but that’s what you have to study, so you’re stuck with it – try to find motivation in making it a challenge. You might see how quickly you can write a two-page essay, or whether you can solve a Maths problem in three-quarters of the time you’re supposed to. Don’t make the challenge impossible, but making your studying hard enough that you need to engage your brain properly can be helpful in making it less dull.

8. Write comics, short stories or songs

There are endless songs written that could have been designed to help you study. Think about Tom Lehrer’s Elements song or Flanders and Swann’s First and Second Law . Putting something into rhyme or setting it to music helps a great deal in remembering it, not only through the end product but also through the process of composing your poem or song in the first place. If songs don’t suit you, try a different creative activity, like drawing a comic or writing a story. This might be a comic that maps out a particular scenario in History, or it could be a story where the conclusion rests on a particular principle in Physics. For others, even half an hour is too much, and means they find it hard to go back to focusing on studying. Assess what suits you, and don’t do something a particular way just because it seems to work for your friends.

10. Feel free to be ridiculous

There are very few perks to the high-pressure time of studying for exams. One of them should be that you have the freedom to be ridiculous. If you’re going around the house singing songs about Chemistry while pretending to be Henry VIII, you’re already looking pretty ridiculous, so let your embarrassment go.
