'I' (Ai, Manoharudu) Movie Review by Telugu Viewers: Vikram-Shankar Combo Rocks Again
Director shankar's "i" (ai, manoharudu) starring vikram and amy jackson in leads, has got rave reviews from telugu viewers. read i movie review live update..
Director Shankar's much-awaited movie "I" ("Ai", "Manoharudu") starring Vikram and Amy Jackson in the lead roles, has released in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on 14 January and garnered mixed reviews from Telugu viewers.
Written and directed by Shankar, "I" is a science fiction romantic thriller film, which revolves around the story of a village guy (Vikram) and model (Amy Jackson). The model becomes a brand ambassador for Olympics in Beijing, defeating the former brand ambassador (Upen Patel). How she makes the villager the most charming model in Beijing will form the crux of the story.
Vikram and Amy Jackson have played lead roles in "I" and both have done their best in the film. Vikram's sterling performance and Amy's glamour are among the main highlights of the film. Suresh Gopi, Upen Patel, Santhanam and Ramkumar Ganesan have played pivotal roles and their performances are also big assets of the movie.
Made on a whopping budget, "I" has rich production elements, which are on par with international standards. AR Rahman's music, PC Sreeram's cinematography, Srinivas Mohan's visual effects, Weta Workshop's prosthetic make-up and art direction are the big attractions of the film, say Telugu audience.
Many movie buffs took to their Twitter pages to express their views on "I". Here is the live update of "I" movie review by Telugu viewers:

#I #Ai - A visual Bonanza from Shankar, Vikram's dedication is unbeliveable. Too early too post a verdict. Good so far. #Ai #I @pcsreeram's camera work is truely equal to International Standard. #I - Visually great. As usual Shankar came with an out of the box presentation. Bt the story is unexciting, and the screenplay drags a bit. Everything seems predictable, the so called twist is not up to the level. It didn't work for me.. #I #Ithemovie. The Villains are cliched.. Missing freshness in their writing.#I is probably the most unsatisfying work from Shankar. It's a personal view..

The stylish revenge entertainer gets packaged with all the trademark enjoyable Shankar gimmicky elements and fascinating visuals, but unfortunately the predictable narrative structure, some cliched dull scenes and overstretched runtime keep pulling the engagement factor down. In the end, the heart and soul performance of Vikram delivering mind blowing physical transformations and AR Rahman’s lovable music are about the only takeaways in an otherwise passable drama.

lots of reasons i thought i hated this (the extremely prominent homophobic/transmisogynist subplot is the Fucking Worst) but then for weeks afterward i kept doing the "more than that" finger twirl and laughing alone in my room, and i thought that perhaps i should reevaluate. yeah, the extended-flashback structure completely kneecaps the pacing. as if i'm here for some bullshit like "narrative". these are some of the most acutely absurd action setpieces and disgustingly opulent musical numbers in the entire shankar filmography. it is the festering ground of his highest highs and lowest lows. so what if it's mostly the latter. it's not a shankar unless it makes me want to kill myself at least a little bit.

Like other films by Shankar, I is ambitious with its large scope, unconventional visuals, and prosthetic make up designs. However, tonal inconsistencies, humor that has not aged well, and some underdeveloped side characters makes it hard to resonate with many emotional threads that compose the story.
It’s interesting to see how Shankar tries to present the story in a nonlinear timeline. This aspect of the storytelling is accentuated by interesting transitions. One example of these transitions includes the use of TV advertisements, that play a larger role in the story, to help jump between two time periods the story shows. Despite the unique nature of this method to connect the story, it also allows for moments of repetition which ultimately…

Wow, what a letdown.
+ves: -Vikram.(Who has proven that he's the Christian Bale of Indian Cinema when it comes to physically transforming himself into a character.) -Amy Jackson is stunning. -The whole I virus concept.
-ves: -Script; Everything is predictable, the "twist" included. -Laggy. -Flat humour, especially towards the end. -Suresh Gopi.
It's a shame this movie ends up being such a boring, cliched experience, especially considering the fact that the main plot is actually interesting. The story could've been handled in a better way, but I just totally misses the mark. Mediocre at best.

Visually i (2015) is playful, but all the other aspects of this film abysmal. The plot is horrendous! A body builder turned hunchback freak looking for revenge?!! There was so little coherent plot that they had to cram it full of pointless music videos, which had nothing to do with the story by the way, and advertisements. This movie showcase perfectly why the so called western world practically puke by the mention of Indian movies, fucking up the reputation and wider exposure for the quality movies that does get made in the country. The fact that it is, at writing moment, closing in on 12,000 votes (among the 150 most rated films of 2015!) with a 7,7 rating on IMDB, says a lot!

If you want a movie about a disfigured man harming those who have ruined his life that has crazy cool visuals, thrills, fantastic performances, and a genuinely empathetic story….watch The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). If you want to watch a film that has moments of visually interesting ideas, but is mostly an extremely long, progressively worse sexist and transphobic clusterfuck…watch I (2019).
It’s not a complete piece of trash. Like I said, there is a lot of creativity and unique visually going on here. If I had to describe this film in one word it would be ambitious , and that’s something to be admired in its own right. It simply fails to rise to its calling. Which is understandable: I don’t…

Shankar’s I [Manoharudu] (2015) Movie Review
by survi · January 14, 2015
Movie Review : I Genre : Romantic| Thriller Star cast : Vikram, Amy Jackson, Upen Patel, Santhanam, Ramkumar Ganesan, Srinivasan, Mohan Kapoor Director : Shankar Shanmugam Music : A. R. Rahman Producer : Aascar Ravichandran Censor Certificate : U Runtime : 188 Minutes
I, the latest film by Shankar Shanmugam . Throughout his career he has created blockbuster of blockbuster, from Gentleman in 1993 to famous Robo 2010 & Snehithudu in 2012. Shankar’s movies usually are long, expensive films that combine social message, action, humour and of course romance. His latest movie, reportedly his dream film, has finally manifested on screen, and it disappoints. Lets check out the review for more details.
Hunched – deformed man Lingesh (Vikram) kidnaps popular model Diya (Amy Jackson) from her wedding. Then starts a non-linear narration in flashback and present scenario, Flash back narrates about Lingesh (Vikram) a fierce bodybuilder and who aspires to win Mr. India title. He admires National model Diya (Amy Jackson) and meets her during an ad shoot at Annapurna Studious. Post winning Mr. Andhra title, Diya asks him to shoot for an (I) doubt ad with her due some unnecessary issues created by Co-model John (Upen Patel). China ad receives huge response and company owner plans to shoot every big ad with him. In the meantime, Diya gets engaged to Lingesh. Why did he kidnap Diya? What happened to Lingesh? Forms the rest of the storyline.
Chiyaan Vikram steals the show as he played three different characters (A Body Builder, Hunched-Deformed man & Werewolf), which brings out real star in him. Five minutes into the movie one forgets that Lingesh character is actually essayed by Vikram with heaps of makeup and prosthetic s. He excels in every frame and takes the film to another level with his histrionics. “I” is a new chapter for Upen Patel who looks fantastic with his clean shaven, understated yet ambitious young model. Amy Jackson is at her usual best, in a spirited and modern looking role. She sizzles in the Ladio, Bikini Ad shoot and Nuvvunte Naa Jathagaa. The major problem with the movie is that the lead pair share zero chemistry between themselves on screen. Vikram tries to convince, but he doesn’t share the vibes with Amy Jackson who has a role to cherish . Veteran actor Suresh Gopi is good as the doctor, who is possessive about Amy Jackson. Ram Kumar Ganeshan and Ojas M. Rajani are adequate in their small roles. Santhanam comedy fails to tickle in Telugu.
A quote by Khalil Gibran “Beauty is not in the face, beauty is a light in the heart” perfectly suits the message Shankar tried to convey through “I”. Movie themes, true love and revenge are painfully familiar, and some scenes feel so forced that they almost make us cringe . Although the story has nothing new to offer, Vikram’s dedication, Cinematographer P C Sriram vision, A R Rahman music make all the difference. P C Sriram camera work is a visual delight. From the sweeping rich locales of the China to the unassuming beauty of South India, the film takes much from the beautiful lands, weather and communities in which it finds itself. Shankar uses visual imagery to construct scenes that seem like montages out of a dream. For example Poovulane captures the weather in the background symbolizes his emotions. In Nuvvunte Naa Jathaga , Vikram is shown as a true admirer, who is the beast and tries to propose her, but the girl (beauty) gets too scared by his appearance. The heartbroken beast kills himself and transform into a handsome man, but it’s too late. A.R. Rahman ’s music is good but the hit and super hit status is missing. The Nuvvunte Naa Jathaga song is already very popular and its picturization is quite eye-filling. The other songs are nice but that’s not enough for a romantic film, even the lyrics (By Anantha Sriram, Ramajogayya Sastry & Suddala Ashok Teja) sound very fuzzy. Muthuraj’s Artwork is spectacular, considering how much the movie has relied on the sets; especially the beast song set deserves a nomination.
Even “I” has its faults. At three hour-eight minutes, it does drag a lot in the second half; it’s not totally boring, but it takes a very long route to get to the final showdown. Shankar gets a little carried away in showing off the visuals at a few points where he could have tightened the script. For such a long movie, the supporting characters aren’t given much room to be fleshed out, a little more meat behind Ram Kumar Ganeshan and Suresh Gopi’s characters for instance would have gone a long way. For example, Upen Patel is easy to hate – which is the intent – but he’s so testosterone-filled it’s hard to see him as a real person. Again, giving his character more depth would have benefited the movie a bit. The movie really is spectacular to behold, but there are times when the story struggles to be worth the effort put into the special effects. Shankar tries to make point hauled with his nonlinear narration. Screenplay is simple, yet director tries to narrate the past and present in parallel way which makes the narrative drilling . To shock us more, there are loads of gay jokes popping up when you least expect them. Fight masters Anal Arasu and Peter Ming have done an okay job and have made look Vikram superior. Production Values of Aascar Ravichander are grand.
By now one is certain about the common traits to expect in a Shankar movie. A world of his own, presented in a grand way with a high degree of visual effects and natural panache for bringing out high degree of emotions even in intricately choreographed song picturizations. However, Shankar also tends to often test your patience with some high melodrama and deliberate heavy-handed operose film making that aims for the epic. In that sense, “I” clings to much of this and there are those moments in the first half that simply disengage you from the narrative. There’s a limit to avowedly beautiful locals or wows of colours on screen if the script isn’t there. Final words, I – though an overall letdown, is not a complete waste of your time primarily because of Vikram’s hard-work behind Shankar’s vision.

Vikram is undoubtedly one of the biggest assets of the film. The efforts that he has put in for his role are clearly visible on screen. Vikram, Amy Jackson |
Shankar is one film maker in India whose films are eagerly awaited all over. His latest presentation is ‘I’ which has the National Award winning actor Vikram in a lead role. After all the hype and hysteria, this film has finally hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Lingesh(Vikram) is an upcoming body builder who is deeply and madly in love with an actress named Diya(Amy Jackson). One fine day, Diya approaches him to act in an Ad film with her. She gives him the necessary make over, and in the process of the shoot, the couple fall in love with each other.
Twist in the tale arises when Diya’s professional enemies run down a deadly virus into Lingesh’s body which turns his life upside down. Rest of the story is as to how an diseased Lingesh takes revenge on those who made his life a living hell.
Plus Points:-
Vikram is undoubtedly one of the biggest assets of the film. The efforts that he has put in for his role are clearly visible on screen. He is outstanding as a body builder, and pushes the edge with his appearance and acting as the hunchback guy. The way he has showcased pain and grief even with his heavy make up is just wonderful.
Amy Jackson is apt in her role and looks gorgeous. Visuals are top notch and the entire credit should definitely go to Shankar for thinking something different and in a grand scale. All the songs have been shot well and production values are superb.
Make up done for Vikram is of international standard and elevates his character to another level. While the first half has decent entertainment, the second half is serious and emotional. Upen Patel does well in his negative role, and so are Santhanam and Suresh Gopi.
Minus Points:-
Too much of hype and expectations spoil the outcome of this film. Shankar has raised the bar so high with his previous films but sadly, I fails to meet those expectations. No where in the film you get a feel that it is a Shankar film. He adds unnecessary elements and drags the film in many places.
Last fifteen minutes of the first half are below par, and the love story showcased during this part is quite boring. The film moves back and forth in time, and the screenplay takes a severe beating here. May be for the first time in his career, Shankar has misplaced songs in the narrative.
Yet another major drawback is the excessive length of the film. A lot of scenes and fights could have easily been trimmed. Once the twist is revealed in the second half, the movie gets predictable.
Technical Aspects:-
‘I’ is a brilliant film technically. A R Rahman’s music is good and so is the background score. As said earlier, the make up and prosthetics used for Vikram’s character are mind blowing. P C Sreeram’s camerawork is stunning and gives the film an international look. All the episodes that are shot in China have been shot beautifully.
The sets designed and scale of the movie is surely up to Shankar’s standard. Telugu dubbing is decent and so are the dialogues. Screenplay by Shanakar lacks focus in many areas as you do not get attached to film emotionally. The way Vikram’s character goes about taking revenge on his enemies in the first half have been hurried up and is unclear.
On the whole, ‘I’ is surely Shankar’s weakest film till date. Excessive length, weak story and lack of emotional connect are basic drawbacks. But keeping the festival season in mind, Shankar’s grand visuals added with Vikram and Amy Jackson’s mind blowing performance, this film can be given a shot. Only thing you need to do is go in without any expectations whatsoever.

Our 40 th President remains something of a cipher: Ronald Reagan was a small-town boy turned movie star, union leader, and a politician whose folksy demeanor in the Oval Office contrasted with the furthest-right economic and national security policies in decades. It’s still unclear whether the man nicknamed “The Great Communicator” was good at making complicated issues seem simple or whether he really thought in simplistic terms. “Reagan,” with Dennis Quaid as the President, is made by MJM Entertainment Group, which specializes in films with Christian themes. It exaggerates Reagan’s strengths and skips or minimizes his limits, mistakes, and failures.
A biographical film about a historical figure must tell the story of a consequential life in a couple of hours. So the framing and selection of key events are critical. Oddly, this story is presented from the imagined perspective of a Soviet spy who, in the world of this movie, spent decades watching Ronald Reagan, becoming his most ardent admirer.
I would never tout myself as the expert on Reagan’s presidency (a position the spy plays in this film), but I worked next door to the White House as a lawyer during the Reagan administration, in a division of the Executive Office of the President. I met the President and First Lady just once, but I prepared briefing materials for him, and several of the political appointees I worked with met with him regularly. Even for those who have not had that experience, even for those who were not born when he was President, the relentless hagiography of this film should make anyone question its credibility. One-sidedness makes for dull filmmaking, and the clunky dialogue and awkward pacing make watching it a slog.
Many biographical films begin with a lifetime turning point before going back to the early years. This film begins with Reagan in the early months of his Presidency, telling a joke to a union group about a father reluctant to change a diaper. Those who remember the events of that era and notice the date will realize before he starts to leave the Hilton that it’s where Reagan and three other people would be shot by a mentally ill young man. What’s the point of starting with this incident? It’s not especially gripping, because we know he survived. And other than his quips (“I forgot to duck,” he says to his wife), it’s not especially revelatory of his temperament or his impact on history.
We then turn to Jon Voight as the elderly former KGB agent, Viktor, telling the story of his years of fascinated surveillance to an ambitious young politician. The spy may be inspired by a real-life former KGB agent named Viktor Petrovitch Ivanov, though there is no evidence that he said or did what is portrayed in the film. Viktor explains that his job was to “profile those who could become threats,” with psychological insight as important as spycraft. This takes us back to Reagan’s origins in the small town of Dixon, Illinois, with a devoted, church-going mother who tells him that everything, “even the most seemingly random twist of fate,” is all part of the divine plan. She teaches him to stand up to bullies. His father is charming and a great storyteller, but unreliable and an alcoholic. Reagan will incorporate and react to these influences throughout his life.
His time as a lifeguard will also be significant. The movie does not try to verify Reagan’s claim that he rescued 77 people, but we do see that he was such a hottie that some of those rescues might have been girls pretending to be in trouble to get his attention. But later we will learn (or we will be told, at least), that all those days staring into the water gave him not only a special understanding of currents, but the ability to impute that knowledge to be able to forecast international security developments. Really.
We then see Reagan as his movie star days are fading and his marriage to Jane Wyman (Mena Suvari) is ending. He is relegated to doing commercials, but getting interested in heading the actors’ union and protecting Hollywood from Communist infiltration. That’s how he meets actress Nancy Davis (Penelope Ann Miller), who becomes his fiercely devoted wife. The next thing you know, he’s in politics, elected Governor, and running for President. And apparently inventing trickle-down economics though in reality it (1) was the idea of economist Arthur Laffer and (2) has been consistently proven to be, to use a non-economics term, bunk.
Quaid captures Reagan’s affability and cadences, and the scenes with Miller have a believable sense of their devotion and partnership. But the movie overplays his ability and achievements, under-plays the Iran-Contra scandal, and overlooks several other failures entirely. Reagan’s responses to Iran-Contra, like his deadly neglect of a child’s pet fish, is essentially “oops.” It comes so close to parody that it brings to mind the “Saturday Night Live” “Mastermind” skit, starring Phil Hartman as a secretly super-intelligent Reagan. There’s a lot to explore in examining Reagan’s presidency (currently 16 th in the 2024 Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey’s ranking ). We could use much more insight into what made him “the great communicator,” but this movie is a poor communicator about the history and the man.

Characters die in movies every day. Whether you’re watching a violent thriller or a death-bed tearjerker like “Steel Magnolias” or some of the more macabre meditations of Ingmar Bergman, you might say that the movies, in some grand collective way, are nothing less than a rehearsal for death. Yet it’s still rare to encounter a big-screen drama that grabs death by the horns, that looks it in the eye, that asks us to confront its daunting reality on every level the way Pedro Almodóvar ’s lyrical and moving “ The Room Next Door ” does.

“The Room Next Door” is vibrantly shot (by Eduard Grau), notably when the characters move to a fancy modernist rented vacation home in the upstate country near Woodstock, NY. Mostly, though, it’s a movie in which Martha and Ingrid talk about death, and Martha finally figures out what she’s going to do about it. She has not stopped wanting to live. But she has grown tired of fighting the fear that she’s going to die.
Tilda Swinton has always had a face so distinctive — pale and severe, expressive in a way that’s almost translucent, with that aura she conjures of looking like the aristocratic elfin alien sibling of David Bowie — that we feel as if we know that face like our own. In “The Room Next Door,” Swinton’s face, along with her words, becomes an awesome instrument of inquiry. She gives a monumental performance, one that in its raw emotion, its pensive power, is worthy of comparison to the spirit and virtuosity of Vanessa Redgrave. She makes Martha a grounded woman who knows herself, and knows what she wants, but has landed in uncharted territory. She’s not prepared for this. Who is, really? But she’s going to take the journey and take us with her.
At a certain point, Martha decides that she’s had enough, and that she’s going to seize control of her destiny. She’s going to decide when she dies. “The Room Next Door” is not an “issue” movie (though it’s very much on the side of euthanasia). It’s a deceptively plainspoken but artful voyage into the river of emotion that accompanies the impulse to end one’s life. Martha has a plan, and it’s a relatively simple one, though it involves a pill she had to obtain, with some difficulty, on the dark web. And the challenge hardly ends there. As she and Ingrid move into the upstate home, a timetable emerges, and it infuses the film with a reality-based suspense. Will Ingrid wake up to find Martha’s bedroom door closed? That’s the code they’ve agreed on for the day of Martha’s reckoning. Moore’s Ingrid, warm and empathetic, will do whatever it takes to support her friend, which makes her part of a spiritual-ethical equation. She’s there to protect Martha, though she herself also needs to be protected (from the law).
Pedro Almodóvar, at 74, is no Spanish fatalist, but his films have become increasingly haunted by death. That’s why the comedy in them has mostly been burned away. Yet I would argue that this has not made him a downbeat artist. “The Room Next Door,” as driven by the scalding humanity of Swinton’s performance, lifts you up and delivers a catharsis. The movie is all about death, yet in the unblinking honesty with which it confronts that subject, it’s powerfully on the side of life.

‘Afraid’ Review: Hey Siri, Don’t Kill Us
A family surrenders control of its life to artificial intelligence with predictably dire results — for this movie’s viewers.

By Elisabeth Vincentelli
Curtis and Meredith (John Cho and Katherine Waterston) should have had their spidey senses tingling when their new digital assistant, AIA, dismissed one of its competitors with a breezy “Alexa, that bitch?”
Instead, the couple and their three children, all of whom are endowed with a mix of entitlement and shopworn neuroses, give AIA (pronounced Aya, and voiced by Havana Rose Liu) the keys to their lives. The new gizmo is more than convenient, you see — AIA, which sees and hears everything, anticipates then solves everybody’s problems.
Watching any movie in which artificial intelligence goes rogue (and there are a lot), it’s hard not to think that humankind is rushing to its doom because we were too lazy to manually turn on a light or pick a song. But before we get to the age of the machine, films like Chris Weitz’s limp techno-thriller “Afraid” are attempting to ring an alarm bell.
As AIA takes control of every aspect of its new household — the movie feels as if it’s set five minutes into the future — it quickly becomes obvious that this assistant wants to be the boss. This scenario’s predictability could be forgiven were the movie effective on any level, but it just isn’t, from Cho and Waterston’s wooden performances to jump scares that would not startle Scooby-Doo.
Early on, Meredith drops a reference to HAL 9000, the malevolent computer from “2001: A Space Odyssey .” This suggests an awareness of the dangers of ahead, but does she change her behavior? Of course not: Unlike AIA, these humans don’t learn.
Afraid Rated PG-13 for the occasional bad word. Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes. In theaters.
Review: Despite its charm, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ sequel shouldn’t have been summoned
- Copy Link URL Copied!
It’s hard to overstate the cultural impact of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice” in 1988 — in fact, it feels like the wild-haired “bio-exorcist” memorably embodied by Michael Keaton has simply always been around, especially for a subset of millennials who grew up with the zany horror comedy on repeat. The film was a critical and commercial success, spawning an animated series and, later, a Broadway musical . And now, 36 years after “Beetlejuice” made Winona Ryder a star, a sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” finally skitters into theaters.
The idea of a follow-up to the hit film has long been bandied about, with scripts commissioned for “Beetlejuice in Love” and “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.” But it took three decades for something to come together, and this current cultural moment demands a lega-sequel, given the appetite for anything and everything nostalgic.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” returns where we started, in Winter River, Conn. (and the afterlife, of course). Ryder’s iconic character Lydia Deetz — who defined quirky-goth Gen X cool with her jagged bangs and black humor — is now a mother with a job. She hosts a paranormal TV show called “Ghost House” and, karmically, struggles to parent a surly teen, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who eye-rolls at Mom’s new boyfriend, her producer, Rory (Justin Theroux), who is obsessed with sensitive therapy speak.
‘Honestly, I was terrified’: Winona Ryder on returning with ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’
The Gen-X icon always hoped to be back in black for one of her most signature roles. But Ryder and her director Tim Burton still can’t believe it’s happened.
Aug. 28, 2024
The Deetz women, including Lydia’s stepmother, conceptual artist Delia (Catherine O’Hara), reconvene in Winter River following the death of Lydia’s father. (Charles Deetz, played in the original film by Jeffrey Jones, is rendered a particularly gruesome claymation death by plane crash and shark attack, and his character wanders around the afterlife with his head and shoulders chopped off.)
While the original is a wacky family comedy about death and real estate, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” attempts to be a bit more, stretching to find emotional resonance in what it means to connect with the dead. Astrid is a cynic who refuses to believe in ghosts, but when she has the opportunity to visit the afterlife, she jumps at it, simply because she misses her deceased father (Santiago Cabrera). Lydia, tormented by visions of ghosts and sensing the presence of Beetlejuice close by, needs to make peace with her hauntings.
Speaking of the old boy, he’s got his own issues going on downstairs, namely an ex-wife (Monica Bellucci) stapled together and stalking him around his workplace, glowering beautifully. Bellucci’s stylish but minor role is indicative of some of the systemic issues that plague “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which is, namely, too many celebrities. Certain roles are nothing more than glorified cameos (Danny DeVito), while others feel shoehorned in and distracting from the main plot (Willem Dafoe as a dead actor-turned-noirish afterlife detective).
She’d never admit it, but the success of her series might just make Wednesday Addams happy
Writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar take us inside the creation, launch and success of ‘Wednesday.’
May 31, 2023
After a first hour that feels somewhat forced and overly contrived, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” coheres for a brief moment in the middle, and we get to see some of the weird and wonderful chemistry that Ryder and Keaton still possess while inhabiting these characters. The film then descends into hectic, harried chaos, as Burton and his “Wednesday” screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Seth Grahame-Smith has a “story by” credit) toss characters, monsters and familiar set pieces into a blender and let it rip. Sandworms! Singing! Disco!
Watching “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is not an unpleasant experience, as it maintains a familiar irreverent tone and a gorgeously morbid and imaginative look. The underworld is particularly well-designed, and Burton‘s blend of CGI and practical effects maintains some of the charm of the original.
Certain qualities are undeniable, such as Keaton’s command of this character and O’Hara’s unique wit. Ryder has the heaviest performance lift, transitioning her character from teen to mom, but she finds her groove in the back half of the movie.
But there’s something a bit bland and manufactured about this version, which doesn’t have the same hyper-real twisted suburban aesthetic that production designer Bo Welch brought to the original, as well as to Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands.” It doesn’t feel like a singular hand-crafted object, but rather like mass-produced Hot Topic merch for a new generation. It’s a busy, chaotic, mixed bag of recycled material that just leaves us wondering why we bothered summoning this project back from the dead in the first place.
