Apple iPad mini 5 Tablet Review

Apple iPad Mini 5 2019

When looking at our  iPad mini 4 test unit not much seems to have changed at first glance. An impression we also had when reviewing the current Air, and there is a simple reason: over the past four years Apple has been recycling the well-known iPad design as well as the name over and over again. Accordingly, the unchanged case now contains brand-new hardware that might be most interesting to those users with older models.

Starting at $399 owners of previous iPad minis, such as the iPad Mini 3 , can switch to a brand-new device with Wi-Fi without having to adapt and get used to a new form factor. You get to keep the design you love and are accustomed to, but now equipped with the  Apple A12 Bionic SoC that also powers the iPhones XR ,  XS , and XS Max . A total of 64 GB of internal storage should be plenty for apps and files, and $150 more will catapult you to a total of 256 GB. Another optional upgrade is the LTE modem that will set you back yet another $120. In other words; the most expensive iPad mini 5 will cost you $679 plus tax.

If you are considering an iPad mini you are most likely not interested in possible competitors. However, should you be so inclined there are several worthy and more than just adequate alternatives outside Apple’s ecosystem. For the sake of this review, we have chosen the iPad mini’s own predecessor, the iPad mini 4 , as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 , the  Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4 , and the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 .

The iPad mini can be had in three different colors: silver, space gray, and gold. Build quality is excellent, and the device left us with a very satisfied feeling when held in one's hand. Our review unit was the Wi-Fi-only SKU, whose rear cover is made of edge-to-edge aluminum that covers the entire device up to the edges of the display. The cut-outs for the buttons, the camera, the speakers, and the microphone are perfect and the buttons themselves sit firm in their respective openings. The Touch ID sensor is located underneath the display and sits atop a firm mechanical button with soft and gentle feedback.

Visually, there are almost no differences between the fifth generation and its predecessors, and weight and dimensions have remained almost identical as well. The latter are hard to compare with the iPad’s competitors due to its unique 4:3 display, which makes it wider than the  Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 and the Huawei MediaPad M5 . In return, the Huawei is longer and manages to incorporate an 8.4-inch display inside a case with a very similar footprint. The iPad mini remains the thinnest and lightest device in our test group.

Connectivity.

Apple equipped its 5th generation iPad mini with its own  A12 Bionic SoC, the A12 Bionic  GPU, and 64 GB of eMMC flash storage. According to Geekbench it also comes with 3 GB of RAM.

As before, wired data transfers rely on Apple’s Lightning port with support for USB, HDMI, or card readers via the appropriate dongles. In addition, the iPad mini 5 also supports the 1st generation Apple Pencil but lacks a smart connector to attach a keyboard cover.

Left: no connectivity

At the time of writing, the tablet shipped with iOS 12.2, which is going to get updated regularly in the coming years. Thanks to the fast hardware the OS felt very smooth, and we failed to notice any dropped frames or other slowdowns during our test period. Streaming HD videos via Netflix or other services is supported.

Communication and GPS

Our Wi-Fi-only review unit supported Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac as well as Bluetooth 5.0, and was able to communicate in both bands, 2.4 and 5 GHz. For $120 extra you can get a model with 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE cellular eSIM support.

When connected to our Linksys EA8500 reference router the iPad mini 5 only managed average transfer speeds of 236 Mbps and 194 Mbps receiving and transmitting data, respectively. These landed the device on last and second to last place in our test group.

The Wi-Fi-only SKU has access to an e-compass as well as iBeacon micro location services, both of which are simply not enough to be used for day-to-day navigation. Our obligatory bike tour showed that the iPad mini 5 was incapable of keeping up with the professional Garmin Edge 520 satnav. The LTE-enabled SKU supports A-GPS and GLONASS location services as well.

Positioning - Apple iPad mini

The main camera is equipped with an 8 MP sensor and an f/2.4 aperture. At the front, we find a so-called FaceTime camera named after Apple’s own video chat software. Obviously, it can also be used for selfies but turned out to be of mediocre quality. Fine structures and details were slightly blurry, and we noticed a very distinctive graininess when zoomed in. In return, camera quality did not worsen any further with decreasing light. Considering that the  iPad mini 4 came with a 1.2 MP camera the new 7 MP front-facing camera is a major update.

The main camera produced decent results with well-defined colors and objects in bright daylight. We noticed the same graininess when zoomed in but it was invisible when zoomed out. In addition, photos turned out to be slightly too dark, which was also true for macro shots with their popping colors, well-defined objects, and a less noticeable graininess. The latter returned in full swing in our low light photo. Overall, the iPad was capable of capturing the motive in its entirety without sacrificing peripheral object details and colors. Not much has changed in this regard compared to the iPad mini 4 . Image quality remained more or less identical, and the camera app does not offer any new features worth noting.

Video quality was comparable to photo quality, and videos turned out very well in bright light. Fast movements and low light had a lasting and noticeable impact on video quality.

Image Comparison

Choose a scene and navigate within the first image. One click changes the position on touchscreens. One click on the zoomed-in image opens the original in a new window. The first image shows the scaled photograph of the test device.

ColorChecker Passport

We use the ColorChecker Passport under normalized conditions to determine color accuracy. Overall, bright colors were captured too bright while brown and dark blues turned out to be too dark.

Our test chart was captured in great detail, albeit with slightly pale colors and a minor blur towards the edges.

Accessories and Warranty

Included in the box are a modular USB charger and a matching USB to Lightning cable. Additional accessories, such as a smart cover or the 1st generation Apple Pencil, are available in the Apple Store.

The warranty is limited to 12 months.

Input Devices and Handling

The iPad mini’s virtual keyboard worked well for text input even if your fingers were on the bigger side. The touchscreen was reliable and fast. Despite its alleged grease-repellent coating the display was covered with fingerprints and smudges very quickly. The display was also not as smooth and offered more resistance than expected, which rendered drag & drop operations somewhat arduous. The mini is equipped with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the mechanical button that can be used for unlocking the device as well as authorizing payments. The fingerprint reader worked very reliably and offered a soft yet distinct feedback. The gyroscope was very quick to react and adjusted screen contents almost instantaneously.

Since the optional Apple Pencil was not included with our review unit we were unable to test it. According to other reviews it works just as well with the iPad mini 5 as it does with other Apple tablets.

ipad mini 5 presentation

The 7.9-inch IPS panel runs at a native resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and offers a brightness of 515 nits at the center of the display and a maximum of up to 533 nits. In the APL50 test it even managed to achieve a maximum of 546 nits. Accordingly, the iPad mini was the brightest tablet in our test group, albeit with a slightly substandard brightness distribution of just 87%.

We were able to detect PWM flickering at brightness levels of less than 25% at a high frequency of 5,556 Hz. It should be noted that this frequency is high enough to remain inconspicuous and not cause any issues even for sensitive users.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Screen flickering / PWM detected 5556 Hz ≤ 25 % brightness setting

The display backlight flickers at 5556 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 25 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting.

The frequency of 5556 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17475 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

According to our measurement data Apple’s tablet achieved a mediocre contrast ratio of just 858:1 at an elevated black level of 0.6 nits. Nevertheless, it remained one of the best devices within our test group and was only bested by the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 .

Color accuracy was fairly balanced according to CalMAN, albeit the screen was noticeably cool by default. Once we enabled True Tone it became much more pleasant to look at. The tablet supports the P3 color space.

The iPad mini 5 was made to be used outdoors. Thanks to its antireflective coating the screen contents remained readable even on bright days without getting too distracted by reflections. That said we still recommend a shady spot since it can get distractingly reflective in direct sunlight.

Outdoors

Viewing angles were superb, and screen contents remained readable even at acute angles without any contortions or distorted colors.

Performance

The iPad mini 5 was very smooth thanks to the  A12 Bionic and 3 GB of RAM. iOS 12 did not show any frame drops or other lags during everyday use. Apps loaded quickly and file access was very fast. The iPad mini 4 ’s chipset, the Apple A8 , was first introduced in 2014 while the current  A12 Bionic is just nine months old.

The benchmark results were as superb as expected of this SoC. The iPad mini 5 outperformed every single one of its competitors. Compared to the iPad mini 4 , the new iPad mini was several hundred percent faster.

All things graphic are handled by the A12 Bionic GPU . It is capable of rendering all current games smoothly, although the mini’s 4:3 display turned out to be somewhat of a hindrance every now and then. For example, the field of view was limited in Arena of Valor when compared to widescreen displays. In return, PUBG actually benefited from the uncommon display ratio. Game controls were flawless despite the annoyingly high resistance the display subjected our fingers to. Expect your fingers to tire out when performing long swipe gestures regularly. The gyroscope worked flawlessly and games reacted very quickly to its signals.

Frame rates were recorded using the  GameBench software.

Pubg compare, temperature.

When idle, the iPad mini 5’s surfaces never exceeded 26.2 °C (~79  °F) . Under load, this rose to 38.3 °C (~101  °F) . The tablet got noticeably warmer in some areas but never uncomfortably so. Most importantly, it never got too hot to be held.

GFXBench showed that throttling under sustained load was not a big issue with the iPad mini 5, and that it remained virtually resistant to high temperatures. While its performance remained consistent when running the ES 2.0 test performance decreased in the Manhatten 3.1 test but settled after a while and remained consistent afterwards throughout the rest of the test.

The two speakers offer a very clear sound at a surprisingly high maximum level of volume with a fairly balanced soundscape and even a hint of bass. However, sound quality suffered noticeably on maximum volume. We would thus recommend limiting yourself to quiet environments if possible.

External speakers and headphones can be connected via a 3.5-mm headphone jack. It held inserted plugs firmly in place and had no negative impact on sound quality.

According to our measurement data, the iPad mini 5 used at least 1.3 W when idle and no more than 12.5 W under load. In other words; it was neither here nor there and fit perfectly with the rest of the test group.

The included charger was capable of delivering up to 10.71 W. It was thus too weak to supply the iPad mini 5 continuously with enough energy in high load scenarios.

In review: Apple iPad Mini 5

Apple decided to leave the 5th generation iPad mini’s design untouched, thereby targeting all those interested in refreshing their aging devices with brand-new hardware. And that is exactly what the iPad mini 5 has to offer. The  Apple A12 Bionic offers exceptional performance, and the updated front-facing FaceTime camera is a very welcome upgrade that video calls will certainly benefit from. iOS 12.2 is up-to-date and is going to receive regular security updates unless Apple suddenly changes its update policy.

The iPad mini 5 offers brand-new hardware in a well-known enclosure. While it is possible to zing Apple for their inability to come up with a new design it is certainly not necessary.

Users looking to upgrade their existing Apple device can do so without hesitation. Those who are not yet entirely convinced should be aware of the iPad mini’s limitations. For one, the internal memory cannot be expanded due to lack of a microSD card slot, thus the only option remains cloud storage. Apple’s premium for LTE connectivity is fairly steep, and it tends to be much less than $120 on competing Android devices. The Wi-Fi-only version also lacks a GPS module, and transferring data between an iPad and a PC is more complicated than expected. However, the iPad mini 5 drives a hard sale with its impressive performance.

iPad Mini 5 Review

Impressive performance for the size

iPad Mini 5

  • Page 1 iPad Mini 5 Review
  • Page 2 Performance Review
  • Page 3 Battery Life Review

The iPad Mini 5 is excellent for the purpose for which it’s designed. This isn’t a productivity beast, nor is it attempting to replace your laptop; it’s a super-fast tablet that will slip easily into your bag and act as an incredible gaming and video-viewing machine.

  • Lovely size
  • Ideal device for iOS gaming
  • Welcome Apple Pencil support
  • Chunky bezel surrounding display
  • Design could have done with a freshening up
  • Apple Pencil not included

Key Specifications

  • Review Price: £399
  • 7.9-inch Retina display
  • A12 Bionic chipset
  • Apple Pencil support

Apple’s iPad Mini 5 is an odd device. It looks exactly like the brand’s original 7.9-inch slate from 2012, but it packs the same internals as an iPhone XS .

Apple’s domination of the tablet market is no more apparent than with the iPad Mini 5. There’s no-one else making a small tablet that comes anywhere close to being a better buy than this, and that shows in the fact that Apple has once again opted to go with the same design.

The company doesn’t need to really try very hard to make the best small tablet. For Apple, it’s simply been a matter of taking parts already present, then adding many of the same internals as the iPhone XS and  iPhone XR .

  • What you need to know about the new iPad Air 4 and iPad 8

A tablet of this size isn’t a necessity. Larger phones with 6-inch plus screens have made the need for a separate device with a fractionally bigger screen feel like a pointless luxury. I took that very view – until I started using the iPad Mini 5. It’s super-light, super-comfortable to hold and super-fast; so much so that I’ve found myself reaching for it constantly.

Like previous iPads that aren’t the new 2018 Pros, the design here is familiar. The body is aluminium, with a flat back and slightly contoured sides. There’s a power button on the top, alongside a headphone jack, and a Lightning port on the bottom for charging.

iPad Mini 5

The front of the iPad Mini 5 is the one area design-wise that could have been refreshed. The blocky bezel might provide your thumbs with somewhere to sit whilst playing games or watching a video, but it seems like a poor use of space in this time of super-thin bezels and big screens. I’d have loved to see Apple bring across a few of the design traits of the iPad Pro 2018 here; maybe the flat sides or rounded display.

Still, the iPad Mini 5 is small enough to disappear into a bag without any noticeable added weight, and I can hold it in one hand to read comfortably.

iPad Mini 5

Face ID would have been a welcome addition: the facial recognition feature from the iPhone XS is present on the latest iPad Pros and it lets you unlock the slate without reaching for or pressing anything. Just light up the display and it’s unlocked. The iPad Mini 5 includes the second-generation Touch ID sensor below the display, and it’s fine: fast and reliable.

Performance

The design might have not seen a major update, but much of what makes the iPad Mini 5 such a fantastic device lays within. A new display and flagship phone-worthy internals make this tablet a superb bit of tech – and, arguably, Apple’s best for gaming and reading.

A size of 7.9 inches might not seem much larger than a 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max , but there’s a gulf in the actual screen real-estate. The iPhone is long and narrow, whereas the iPad Mini with its 4:3 aspect ratio is squatter and squarer. This leaves videos letterboxed (not ideal), but web pages and books don’t feel as cramped. It’s also much better for showing off documents and viewing photos.

While the display size and Retina resolution remain the same – it’s still the most pixel-dense iPad around at 324ppi – there’s now support for Wide DCI-P3 Color and True Tone. The latter alters the temperature of the display depending on your environment, and it’s absolutely fantastic if you’re reading on the iPad. The harsh white background of books is softened, making content more comfortable to read.

Apple doesn’t list this is an HDR display – it uses this moniker solely for its OLED-toting iPhones – but like the other, newer iPads and the iPhone XR it can play back Dolby Vision HDR content from iTunes and Netflix. This takes advantage of that wider colour support to add a little more oomph to video.

iPad Mini 5

However, it’s with gaming that this iPad really shines. Pair that larger-than-a-phone screen with the same high-end, flagship-worthy Apple A12 Bionic 7nm chipset found in the iPhone XS and you have a tablet that will fly through just about any title thrown its way. 7.9 inches is the ideal size for gaming since it’s roomier than a phone but not as hard to handle as the larger iPads. The size of the bezel helps in this regard, too, giving your thumbs and palms a comfortable place to rest without encroaching on the screen.

iPad Mini 5 might look like a tablet from 2012, but it comfortably performs like a flagship phone from 2019. Games of any genre run without lag, loading times are excellent, and even though the display lacks the silky 120Hz refresh rate of the iPad Pros (here it’s the standard 60Hz), it still moves ridiculously smoothly.

Apple doesn’t officially disclose the amount of RAM it includes in any of its mobile products, but there’s 3GB available here and it feels like plenty. This might change four or five years down the line, though.

Accessories

With the release of the iPad Mini 5, all of Apple’s current line of iPads support the Apple Pencil: an excellent stylus for drawing, writing or marking up documents.

Now, somewhat confusingly, the Apple Pencil supported here isn’t the same as the one released in 2018; it’s the first-gen device. You know, the one that charges by plugging directly into the Lightning port and with the cap that you’ll spend much of your life searching for. This is such a strange dynamic and will be very confusing for those looking to buy an iPad and Apple Pencil.

iPad Mini 5

Not Apple’s best design decision

Still, the Apple Pencil is a great addition, and even though it isn’t included – you’ll be shelling out an extra $99/£89 – I’d suggest at least thinking about adding one into the package.

  • Here are the Best tablets you can buy

If you’re looking for an iPad for drawing or vector works then the iPad Mini 5 probably isn’t for you, but this is an excellent note-taking device. The Apple Pencil is nice to write with, even if the body is rather slippery – and, importantly, it’s very responsive.

iPad Mini 5

One common iPad accessory that isn’t supported here is the Smart Keyboard. Apple is restricting its keyboard folio for larger iPads, and that makes sense: a physical keyboard here would be prove cramped. Besides, the Mini isn’t trying to replace a laptop.

iOS 12 , rather fairly, receives much criticism for being far too restrictive on larger screens. You can’t open apps in windows and there’s no built-in file system for transferring items between apps. Those issues haven’t bothered me at all on the iPad Mini 5, with iOS 12 feeling perfectly suited to a device this size.

Multitasking is fine: you can have two apps open properly with a floating video window (this does start to feel very cramped, but it’s nice to have as an option), or have a main app running with a secondary one taking up a smaller amount of room either side.

There are also a number of gesture controls that make using the home button almost redundant. A quick swipe up from the bottom takes you home, while a longer swipe shows all your open apps.

iOS 13 is likely being announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference ( WWDC ), and while it won’t ship in full until September (if previous years are anything to go by) you’ll at least get a taster of what’s to come in June. Early rumours suggest the iPad will be a big focus with improved multitasking, an updated Mail app and a system-wide Dark mode.

  • Everything we know about iOS 13

Battery life and camera

There is a camera on the iPad Mini 5; it’s an 8-megapixel unit with an f/2.4 lens. It isn’t very good, however; the camera on the phone in your pocket is likely to be better. Colours are washed out, it’s useless in low-light, and all images captured feels flat.

However, it is useful for scanning documents to sign with the Apple Pencil, as well as for engaging in AR (augmented reality) games and demos.

Battery life remains roughly the same as the Apple’s other tablets, and I’ve found that it matches the claims made by the company. It states 10 hours of video; with a downloaded HD video playing with the screen brightness set to 50%, the iPad Mini 5 was just shy of that figure.

iPad Mini 5

All that being said, there hasn’t really been a step forward in iPad battery life recently – and, like the design of the iPad Mini 5, it feels as though Apple is comfortable to keep things as is. It’s a shame, although it also shows how little competition Apple actually has.

Charging is yet another example of this. The iPad Mini 5 ships with the same Lightning plug and cable that have accompanied all previous Mini devices, powering up the tablet fully in roughly four hours. A fast charger isn’t included, which remains an annoyance, especially for a device costing £399.

Should I buy it?

The iPad Mini 5 is excellent for the purpose for which it’s designed. This isn’t a productivity beast, nor is it attempting to replace your laptop; it’s a super-fast tablet that will slip easily into your bag and act as an incredible gaming and video watching machine.

There isn’t an Android competitor at this size anymore, with Amazon’s Fire 7 focusing on the mid-range and Huawei’s MediaPads feeling slightly outdated now.

However, there is a feeling that Apple is coasting somewhat. Opting for the same design is lazy; refusing to slim the bezel and compatibility with the first-gen Apple Pencil, rather than the newer model, mirror that sentiment.

iPad mini 5 Review: Ultimate digital field notes

iPad Mini

Apple created iPad, then iPad mini. Then Apple destroyed iPad and created iPad Air, only to destroy iPad Air and create iPad Pro. Twice. Thrice. Fice? Whatever. Now, Apple has recreated iPad and, finally, iPad mini and iPad Air as well.

So, what we have now, for the first time, is a fairly complete lineup of iPads, from entry level to mid-range to top end. And that's thanks, in large part, to the new iPad mini 5 and iPad Air 3.

I got to spend some time with both in New York City, and while I only managed to abscond with the new mini, and have spent roughly 72-hours with it so far, the new Air is almost identical. Since I spent the better part of a year with the old 10.5-inch as my primary iPad, and I realize a lot of you want all the information possible to make the best buying decision possible, I'm going to offer up some preliminary thoughts on it as well. In other words, twice the review bang for your read.

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Sizes

The iPad mini 5 is exactly the same size as the mini 4. That's 7.9-inches on the diagonal for the display. The iPad Air 3 is bigger than the Air 2, though. It doesn't quite go to 11 like the 2018 Pro, but it gets pretty close: 10.5-inches, just like the 2017 Pro.

That might make it ever so slightly less portable but, as Apple said a couple of years ago when they debuted the 10.5-inch size, it's just perfect for the on-screen and external keyboard.

iPhone XS Max vs. iPad mini 5 diplay sizes showing a page of Spider Man's origin from Amazing Fantasy 15

Sticking with a 7.9-inch model in the age of iPhone XS Max might seem strange. Big phones overlapping with small tablets, and all. But the aspect ratio actually makes a difference. Phones are big now, but skinny and tall. That means documents are constrained by the width, not height. And that makes them small.

iPad mini, at 4:3 instead of 19.5:9, doesn't have that problem. It's not only still almost twice as large as the Max, pages fit on it much better as well, resulting in not just a bigger but better experience.

Sure, if you don't want to have to buy or carry both a phone or tablet, the Max is a great mix. But if you do want a small tablet, it definitely still has some advantages even over a big phone.

Since the mini 5 is identical in size to the mini 4, and the Air 3 to the 10.5-inch Pro, most cases and accessories should be compatible. There are some minor differences in camera cutouts, and the button and speaker placements, that could make some a little sloppy around the edges, though. So, test before committing.

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Design

Stating the wicked obvious, the design language of these new iPads is decidedly old. Or, I guess, classic, if you prefer. Yeah, neither the new mini nor the new Air do anything to continue the war on bezels. Instead, both retain Touch ID, the second, faster generation sensor, and the bezels to go with it. Yup, Apple is saving the new design language for the high end, at least for now.

iPad mini 5 Home screen, sitting at a window

Same with the speakers. The Pros have four that adjust the sound with the iPad orientation. The mini 5 and Air 3 stick to two… which rotate the sound with the iPad. That's nowhere nearly as good, especially in landscape, but it's part of what's keeping the sticker price non-Pro as well.

And, yeah, they have Lightning instead of USB-C. For some people, especially those with tons of Lightning accessories already, that's probably a benefit. For nerds like me who just want to plug everything into the same port, not so much. But, it's obviously yet another point Apple's using for differentiation. In other words, if you want that more computer-like connector, so you can hook up external displays and all your other toys, you'll still have to go Pro.

That also means both also have a 3.5mm headphone jack, with is something the fancy new Pros with their narrower bezels don't anymore. I've got AirPods. I'm fine. But for people who prefer old school headphones, or need to be able to listen and charge at the same time for accessibility, these might be even better.

ipad mini 5 presentation

Then there's the silver, space gray, and Apple's current-coppery gold options, the latter of which Apple won't give the Pros anymore either, not at any size, I guess out of risk of distracting us with all that shiny, shiny wonder?

As someone who loves the colors and wishes we'd see even more of them, like Product RED more of them, that's a plus.

(Pictured: iPad mini 2 in silver, iPad mini 4 in gold, and iPad mini 5 in space gray.)

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Displays

Both the iPad mini 5 and iPad Air 3 have laminated displays, just like the iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2, and a considerable step up from the currently non-laminated 9.7-inch iPad nothing. Especially when combined with its anti-glare coating for really low reflectivity.

iPad mini 5 flower wallpaper

It's not something everyone notices all the time but, if you're in bad indoor or bright outdoor lighting, it can really make a difference.

They're also DCI-P3 wide gamut color, so your reds look really bright, fire red and your greens are beyond verdant. Making them better than any mini or Air that's come before. Again, not everyone appreciates wide color, but if you're painting on your iPad or working with photos, it looks so good it's hard to go back to plain old sRGB.

There's no 120hz ProMotion on either. So, if you're waiting for that buttery fresh refresh rate, you'll have too go Pro or just keep on waiting. But there is True Tone, which dynamically adjusts to display to match the color temperature of the world around you, keeping white-white. Not blue-white or yellow-white but crispy, paper white.

I know some people dislike it for photo editing or other, color sensitive work, but I love it and leave it on all the time.

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Silicon

On the inside, we have the Apple A12 Bionic system on a chip. It's not quite the SoC of the Pros, which have an even beefier A12X. There you have four efficiency and four performance cores, while here you have but two of the latter, and 4 GPU cores rather than 7 in the X. With, yeah, 3GB of memory.

iPad mini 5 Geekbench

There's no Face ID, of course, not on either, but the neural engine in the A12 can still help power all the artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision Apple and all the apps throw at it. Everything from photo enhancement, to photo sorting, to all the heavy lifting all those crazy CoreML apps do every day.

It's pretty much identical to iPhone XS and still a huge bump up from the A10 Fusion found in the 9.7-inch iPad, never mind the A8 or A8X in the old mini 4 or Air 2.

For what are ostensibly mid-range tablets, A12 is ridiculously OP — that's over-powered, don't @ me — but the same is true of iPhone XS. That's kind of Apple's thing these days, though: building in enough overhead that your device won't just fly now, but keep flying for 4-5 years, and iOS updates, to come.

With the length of time most people keep iPads, or hand them down, that's flat out terrific.

Getting my ass kicked at 60gps in Fortnite on iPad mini 5

You can play the hell out of Fortnite at 60 frames per second.

And, for now, well, you can play the hell out of Fortnite at 60 frames per second. Or, you know, whatever the current hot game paying streamers a million bucks a pop is these days.

All this with the iPad standard promise of 10-hours of battery life for both. As always, it'll take me a while to do real real world testing. But there's a Pokemon Go community day again this weekend, and that'll help. And yes, you can too Pokemon on iPad. Especially the GPS models, which don't drift maddeningly like the Wi-Fi only.

That Wi-Fi is the same as before, up to 866 mbps MIMO. The LTE is new and improved though. No 5G, of course, because, well, literal LOL, there's just no 5G pretty much anywhere yet. It is up to Gigabit LTE, and you already know the sSIM deal. Stick a regular SIM in it at home, if you go for the cellular model, and then sign up with eSim for travel packages whenever you're on the road.

The cellular models are more expensive, of course, but I always go for them. Aside from GPS, I use it all the time while traveling, even as a giant, long lasting tether for my Mac. So, to me, it's always been worth it.

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Cameras

Where the new iPad mini 5 and iPad Air 3 break down for me are the cameras. I get we're not paying Pro prices, and the cuts have to come from somewhere, but 8 MP f/2.4 and 1080p on the back just feels so five years ago. The A12 image signal processor, which ties into the neural engine for features like Smart HDR, should still help make the older glass be all it can be. But there'll always be a limit to that older glass.

ipad mini 5 presentation

I know some bump-haters love it, because it doesn't bump. And the iPad isn't often a primary camera, so it could well be the best cut for the most people. But, I'll take a better camera and a bump any day.

7 MP 1080p up front for FaceTime and iPad Selfies. Which are too a thing. No Animoji or Memoji though. For that, you guessed it, you need the True Depth camera on the Pro.

Everything else is tuned for AR the way Apple has been tuning everything else on all their cameras for the last couple of years: Well. Amazingly well, actually. Like a crystal-clear window into a virtual world well.

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Accessories

The new mini supports Apple Pencil. The first generation, not the second. Probably because putting a flat inductive charging edge on the side would make it look and cost more like a Pro.

Drawing Batman on the iPad mini 5, as one does

Sure, yeah, you're left charging it out the Lightning Port, like an animal. But I love it. The Pencil part, not the like-an-animal part. It's like digital field notes with online sync. Something I've wanted, hell, dreamed about, for years. And, yeah, love it.

iPad mini 5 + Apple Pencil is the digital field notes with online sync of my dreams.

I get that some people might not enjoy small canvases for art, but even so, everything from taking notes to marking up documents to freehanding productivity apps like Pages and Keynote works a treat.

And just the ability to carry it around in your jacket, or, sure, non-skinny hipster jeans back pocket, and just pull it out and start penciling is terrific.

For the 10.5-inch, the Pencil story is pretty much the same as the older Pro. Bigger screen, bigger canvas. But there's a new chapter — with the 10.5-inch size comes the 10.5-inch Smart Keyboard. It's the old version, like the Pencil, but, confession, I… kinda still like it better.

It's more origami, sure, but the keys end up in, not out, and that just feels less like bubble wrap when folded back.

There's no such Smart Keyboard for the mini, which is understandable given how small it would end up being. But… is it weirder that I kind of want to see Apple figure one out anyway?

iPad mini 5 & iPad Air 3 Conclusiion

The mini starts at $399 and the Air at $499, which is the classic iPad price going all the way back to the original. And I think both deliver a lot of value for the money. Especially to people who want Pro-like features without the Pro-like price tags.

iPad mini 5 hero

Initially, I thought I wanted an even cheaper entry-level mini, absent laminated display and with an older chipset would have made the whole product line even more accessible. But I also kinda wanted a more expensive, full on mini Pro, with the new design language… and, yeah, a tiny Smart Keyboard.

If I could only have one, I'd be hard pressed to pick between them. But, now, turns out I don't have to. Apple picked a middle ground for a new mid-range that makes the most sense.

Same with the Air. Both are the new baseline. The new mainstream. The new normal.

I'm still sticking with the Pro because I love all the tech it's packed with. But, for most people, I'd absolutely recommend the new mini and Air instead.

My mom, who currently has an Air 2, has already asked the family to team up and get her an Air 3 for her birthday. And my sister, who currently has a mini 3, has also already asked for the new mini 5 for her birthday as well. And that's exactly what I mean.

If neither lowest price nor highest performance are your primary drivers, these new iPads are everything you want an iPad to be.

iPad mini 5 in gold

Judge it not by its size, for A12 is its ally.

If you don't just want less expensive but you also want smaller, the iPad mini 5 (2019) delivers almost the full iPad Air experience at a fraction of the size, weight, and price.

iPad Air

Latest technology. Original price

The iPad Air 3 (2019) may cost the same as the original iPad, but it brings an almost full-on, pro-level feature set with it for that price.

Comparing the new iPad mini 6 (left) with the iPad mini 5

Last updated 2 years ago

It used to be that you chose the iPad mini because you wanted the smaller size. And you wanted it enough that at $399, you were willing to pay around $70 more than the cost of the regular iPad .

Now following the unveiling of the iPad mini 6, size is not the only reason to buy. Instead, the little iPad mini that could, has a bigger and better screen than before, plus it boasts a faster processor than the iPad Air 4 .

Add in that it has USB-C and it can have 5G, plus all of cameras are considerably improved, and the new iPad mini 6 is a powerful device. It could be the one device you need, but that power and flexibility comes with a higher price.

The new iPad mini now starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi-only model. If you need of all the new features, it's certainly worth the $100 increase — but that doesn't get you everything.

To also get 5G connectivity, you have to pay from $649. That's $150 more where with the previous iPad mini 5 model, adding cellular cost a little less at $130 extra.

You can choose whether to have 5G or not, though you have to make that decision at time of purchase. Otherwise, however, you are paying for all the other extra features and improvements, whether you will use them or not.

Apple ceased selling the iPad mini 5 when the new version was announced, but there are still stocks in other resellers such as Amazon. If it's really the size of the iPad mini that attracts you, check out the exact differences between the models to see which is the better buy for your needs.

USB-C means iPad mini can now connect to more devices and transfer data faster

iPad mini 6 versus iPad mini 5 - Physical Specifications

If you do want a small iPad, then the iPad mini 6 is smaller than its predecessor — mostly. And only by a little.

The latest version is actually 0.01 inches thicker than before, but it weighs 0.01 pounds less. And while its 5.2-inch width remains the same, the height is now 7.69 inches instead of 8 inches.

Even with that height change, you'd really need to see the two versions side by side to notice. And then what you'd see first is just how different the screen is.

By removing the Home button and slimmer bezels, Apple has been able to increase the diagonal screen size from 7.9 inches to 8.3. It's not even a full half inch more, but it is noticeable, and a distinct improvement.

iPad mini 6 versus iPad mini 5 - Displays

It helps that the screen is now a Liquid Retina one. While improved from the regular Retina display of the previous model, it's still using LCD instead of OLED.

But it means the iPad mini 6 is using the same technology as the iPad Arr, and the iPad Pro. And it's got a higher resolution than either of those, at 326ppi.

iPad mini 6 versus iPad mini 5 - Cameras

It's still not as handy, or perhaps socially acceptable, to take photos and video on an iPad mini instead of an iPhone. However, it's a lot easier on an iPad mini 6 than a 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Which means that the camera improvements across the board with the iPad mini 6 are very welcome. That's whether you do shoot video, or take photos with it, or it's what you use for video meetings.

The main rear camera is now a 12MP Ultra Wide one, where previously it was 8MP Wide. It's now able to record video in 4K instead of 1080p HD, and do so at different frame rates.

At the same time, the front camera used to be 720p. Now it's also a 12MP Ultra Wide one, plus it's able to shoot 1080p video.

The new iPad mini 6 has a much improved rear camera

iPad mini 6 versus iPad mini 5 - General connectivity

Depending on the work you do, one improvement that may be significant, is that the iPad mini 6 uses USB-C. That means it can connect directly to more devices, such as cameras.

And it also means that data can move to and from the iPad mini much faster, assuming you've got a properly provisioned network.

There are speed improvements, too, with wireless connectivity. The iPad mini 6 has Wi-Fi 6, for instance, where the previous model supports the slower Wi-Fi 802.11ac — also called Wi-Fi 5.

iPad mini 6 versus iPad mini 5 - Should you upgrade?

The improvements from the original iPad mini to the second generation model were minute compared to the differences between the iPad mini 5 and iPad mini 6. That said, the new features would make the iPad mini 6 worth upgrading to from the previous model — assuming you'll use those features.

You will unquestionably benefit from the better and bigger display, for instance, no matter what you use the iPad mini for. But you may not care about faster USB-C data transfers.

The increased price is also presently exacerbated if you're a new user considering whether to get the older iPad mini 5. For now, that will remain available via third-party resellers who will typically price lower than Apple.

If you are an existing iPad mini 5 user who chiefly likes this model for the convenience of its smaller size, stick with your old device.

But if you do upgrade to the iPad mini 6, you are going to have an incredibly capable device — in a tiny package.

iPad Arr!!

I bought one right away. I’m already happy. Have to wait for the 24th. Long wait it’s gonna be.

One reason I’ll stay with Mini 5 is the 3.5mm line output. It’s an old beaten down argument but bluetooth audio has latency which does not work for precise monitoring. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I loved the iPad mini 2 and more recently, mini 5. I use it primarily for reading news and some apps in the morning as well as travel, but never forget taking photos. I was going to jump to the new 6, but just decided now, no need to since the price jumped to $500 with the improved camera, which I wouldn’t use.   I’ll wait for the next Gen mini in a couple years.

Ordered a mini 5 this morning.  $379 for the 64GB was a deal! One thing I did find odd is the mini 6 display has a lower resolution in one dimension when compared to the mini 5 (1488 vs 1536 respectively).  I would have expected the mini 6 to either meet or exceed the mini 5 display in all ways.

There has never been a good time to buy an iPad Pro

3 features i’m hoping whoop 5.0 doesn’t miss out on, every google chromecast: a timeline of google's cheapest streamer.

Apple announced the next generation of iPad mini in September 2021. The latest model is the sixth generation of the smallest tablet in Apple's portfolio and for the first time since it was introduced in 2012, it comes with a complete redesign.

Want to know how the iPad mini (6th generation) compares to the iPad mini (5th generation) , which you should buy or whether you should upgrade? We have you covered. Here are the differences between the iPad mini 6 (2021) and the iPad mini 5 (2019).

Apple iPad Mini 6th Generation 2021

Apple iPad Mini (2021)

  • Apple iPad mini (6th gen): 195.4 x 134.8 x 6.3mm, 293g
  • Apple iPad mini (5th gen): 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1mm, 301g

The Apple iPad mini (6th generation) takes its design cues from the iPad Air (2020) and it's lovely. It features flat edges, uniformed bezels and it moves the Touch ID fingerprint sensor to the power button at the top of the device.

The iPad mini (5th generation) has much larger bezels around its display and Touch ID at the bottom of the screen, making the design a little more dated than the latest model, as you would expect.

Both iPad mini models have aluminium builds, and there are various colour options. The iPad mini (5th generation) comes in Silver, Space Grey and Gold, while the iPad mini (6th generation) comes in Space Grey, Pink, Purple and Starlight.

The iPad mini (6th generation) is smaller and lighter than the iPad mini (5th generation) however, despite offering a larger display.

  • iPad mini (6th gen): 8.3-inch Liquid Retina, 2266 x 1488 pixels, 326ppi
  • iPad mini (5th gen): 7.9-inch Retina, 2048 x 1536 pixels, 326ppii

The Apple iPad mini (6th generation) has a 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, that has a 2266 x 1488 pixel resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 326ppi.

The iPad mini (5th generation) has a smaller 7.9-inch Retina display, with a 2048 x 1536 resolution, which works out as the same 326ppi pixel density.

Both models have a maximum brightness of 500nits, a fingerprint-resistant coating, are fully laminated and feature Apple's True Tone technology . They also offer a P3 wide colour gamut. Overall, they both deliver a crisp display with rich and vibrant colours, but the slightly larger display on the iPad mini 6 makes a good difference.

  • iPad mini (6th gen): 12MP rear, 12MP front, Center Stage
  • iPad mini (5th gen): 8MP rear, 7MP front

The Apple iPad mini (6th generation) has a 12-megapixel wide camera on the rear with an f/1.8 aperture, a Quad-LED flash and Smart HDR 3. It offers 4K video recording up to 60fps and extended dynamic range for video up to 30fps.

On the front, the iPad mini (2021) has a 12-megapixel ultra wide camera with an f/2.4 aperture. It supports 1080p video recording up to 60fps and it has Apple's Center Stage feature , which follows you around the room when on a video call and is a great feature.

The iPad mini (5th generation) meanwhile, has an 8-megapixel wide camera with an f/2.4 aperture and Auto HDR. There is no 4K video recording capability but it offers 1080p at 30fps.

The front camera is a 7-megapixel front camera with a f/2.2 aperture. It offers a Retina flash, Auto HDR for photos, and 1080p video recording but there are no extra features like Center Stage.

  • iPad mini (6th gen): A15 Bionic, 64GB/256GB, 5G, USB Type-C
  • iPad mini (5th gen): A12 Bionic, 64GB/256GB, 4G, Lightning

The iPad mini (6th generation) runs on the A15 Bionic chip with Neural Engine and it comes in 64GB and 256GB storage options, both of which come in Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi and Cellular models, with the cellular models offering 5G connectivity .

The latest model is compatible with the 2nd generation of Apple Pencil and it offers up to 10 hours of battery life, charged via USB Type-C.

The iPad mini (5th generation) runs on the A12 Bionic chip with Neural Engine and it too comes in 64GB and 256GB storage options, both of which again come in W-Fi only and Wi-Fi and Cellular models. The cellular models support 4G connectivity only though.

The 2019 model is also only compatible with the first generation of Apple Pencil, and while it offers the same 10 hour battery life, it is charged via Lightning.

The biggest difference between the newest iPad mini and the iPad mini (5th generation) is its redesign. The latest model completely refreshes the line and pulls the iPad mini in line with other Apple products, like the iPhone 13 models and the iPad Air (2020) and iPad Air (2022), with some features also borrowed from the iPad Pro too.

Aside from the design changes, the iPad mini (6th generation) also comes with a faster chip, 5G connectivity, compatibility with the second generation Apple Pencil, USB Type-C for charging and camera upgrades.

If you need to save a bit of cash and aren't too fussed about the latest design and features, you may be able to find the iPad mini (5th generation) cheaper, but if you have the budget, the iPad mini (6th generation) wins hands down.

8 Things I’ve Learned Using an iPad for Presentations

I love using my iPad for travel to conferences, and not just because it’s so lightweight and its battery lasts all day. For one thing, with the LTE version I’m not beholden to conference Wi-Fi; while some conferences have good connectivity, I never want to count on it. With the iPad I can nearly always get online.

But the iPad isn’t convenient only for attending conferences. It’s a good tool for presentations, too-or at least an excellent backup for a dedicated computer. I can easily be ready to present if I have a last-minute computer replacement.

Still, I had some things to learn the hard way about using an iPad for presentations. Perhaps I can save you a few steps.

The Basics of Getting Started

Learn the differences between “desktop” keynote and the ipad version.

While I present nearly exclusively from an iPad, I usually build my initial presentation on a Mac. I build all of my presentations in Keynote, and store them in iCloud. I can (and do) make tweaks to a presentation on-site via the iPad version of Keynote, but it always feels as though I’m slightly fighting with the software.

Keynote supports a customizable presenter display in both versions. On the Mac desktop version, you can pick three ways to give yourself that during-the-talk cheat sheet, instructing it to show you the current slide, next slide, and presenter notes. On the iPad, the presenter display options only give you a “two out of three” option, between current slide, next slide, and presenter notes. I begrudgingly pick Next Slide and Presenter Notes, and then I hope the venue has a confidence monitor that shows me what’s on the projector behind me.

Some folks prefer to use Powerpoint or Google Slides. This distills down to religion, and I can confidently state that those people are wrong. Both tools offer iPad versions as well, but I’m not well versed in them. Deckset doesn’t offer an iPad version, and I’ve not had much patience for the swath of custom JavaScript-based presentation tools that render Markdown inside of browsers. I want to like them, but I can’t quite get there yet. As a result, use Keynote; you’ll be happier. As an added bonus, the presentations live in iCloud; with a bit of notice you can grab a copy on someone’s Mac, iPhone, or iPad and be back in business should calamity befall your iPad.

Do be aware that this means that if your presentation requires a demo in a terminal or a web browser, you either get to do some awkward transitions—or accept that presenting from an iPad isn’t right for this talk. I still haven’t found a good way to give my “Terrible Ideas in Git” talk from an iPad due to its live demos…

Invest in a presentation remote

A presentation remote is a necessity, unless you enjoy being trapped behind the podium. I treated myself to a little luxury with the  Logitech Spotlight .

This device does it all. It speaks its own wireless protocol via a USB-A dongle that plugs into most laptops, but the Spotlight also speaks Bluetooth with a great range. Its battery charges using a built-in USB-C port that hides behind the dongle, and a single charge lasts for months.

I freely accept that most folks find the idea of paying $129 for a single-purpose device a bit nutty. Those folks generally don’t give double-digit numbers of presentations a year. A word of caution: Don’t leave it behind at the podium after your talk. It’s expensive enough to buy the first time. Please don’t ask me how I know.

Pay attention to fonts and typefaces

I have a condition I jokingly refer to as “typeface blindness.” I can’t tell the difference between most fonts unless I stare at them and actively work out what I’m seeing. I’m told this is atypical, and whenever I forget this fact I get reminded on Twitter. “Well, that’s the fifth talk so far today that uses Helvetica (the system default)” always makes me facepalm. As a result, I make it a point to not use system default fonts.

Contrary to what many folks believe, you can use custom fonts on iOS, but the process is a bit arcane. Do yourself a favor and drop the $2 for  AnyFont . This magic app streamlines an otherwise incredibly painful process.

Lessons I’ve Learned

I’m conservative here; while you can save money by buying third party adapters, I find that minimizing the risk of screwing up a presentation in front of 400 people is worth the extortionate rate that Apple charges for first party adapters. You’ll want both HDMI and VGA adapters. Both of these are available in Lightning and USB-C flavors, depending upon which generation of iPad you’re using. Note that this is less of a concern with USB-C than it is with Lightning adapters—just make certain you test all of your adapters before you leave home.

Save time; don’t bother looking for DVI adapters. The iPad officially doesn’t support it, Apple doesn’t sell them for Lightning, and I’ve only ever encountered it on the speaking circuit once. Your test a few hours before your talk will validate that you’ll be okay.

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have a big enough battery pack

Grab a beefy battery pack, and you can go days without finding a power outlet. You don’t want to discover that the podium power strip is full, the extension cord is a trip hazard, or that you don’t have the right adapter for the country you’re in when it’s time to give a talk. Having a battery pack that can borderline jump-start a car means you’re fine so long as your iPad battery level is anywhere about roughly 3%. (Too much lower and the tablet won’t boot at all.)

I like Anker products for this, but your mileage may vary. I soundly endorse finding reputable brands. Saving a few bucks on chargers, cables, or batteries that (a) plug into a very expensive electronic device and (b) have a propensity to include “sets the building on fire” in their list of failure modes just never seemed worth the trade-off to me.

Note: If you need to give away something at a booth, don’t use branded USB battery packs or chargers, as swag. At best, they’re cheap and feel flimsy. At worst, something with your logo on it started a fire.

Spend extra for an LTE connection

You can tether your iPad to a mobile device or ride on conference Wi-Fi. However, if you’re presenting frequently it’s worth the extra money to get an iPad version that can speak to the cell networks. Suddenly you no longer care what the conference Wi-Fi password is, whether you remembered to charge your phone, or if the captive portal login page is going to expire and pop up again mid-presentation.

Speaking of which…

Before the presentation, turn on both “Do Not Disturb” and “Airplane Mode”

In presentation mode, Keynote swears that it blocks pop-ups, reminders, incoming calls, and other distractions. To its credit, I’ve never seen it do otherwise.

That said, I always enable Do Not Disturb on my iPad. I put the device in airplane mode. And only then do I plug in the projector. Perhaps I’m paranoid, but you’re also not seeing horrible screenshots from my talks that feature embarrassing notifications, either.

Update nothing before your presentation

If a new iOS version or a Keynote update comes out the same week as your presentation, fine. But resist the upgrade. It can wait a day.

There have been enough regressions in software over the years that I’m extremely hesitant to trust that everything will “just work” an hour before I go on stage.

These are the sometimes-hard-won lessons I’ve learned after spending a year giving talks solely from an iPad.

Apple iPad Mini 5 review: Still worth buying in 2023?

Published on March 15, 2023

Apple iPad Mini (5th generation)

What we like, what we don't like.

Apple’s iPad lineup still sits atop the tablet kingdom more than a decade after the first device was released. Nevertheless, the iPad Mini seems to be in a strange spot. Most of the market gravitates toward the top-of-the-line iPad Pro or the cheapest standard iPad. At first glance, the iPad Mini feels like a worse buy with a higher price tag and a smaller screen.

But after a year of daily use, the iPad Mini quickly became my favorite device to use on a daily basis. Years later (and after the release of the newer 6th gen model), it still holds a special place in my heart. Find out why in Android Authority ‘s iPad Mini review, and check out the best tablet deals to get yourself a heavily discounted model while you still can.

Apple iPad Mini 5

iPad Mini 5 review: What is it?

iPad Mini Lovecraft book

You can’t really talk about the iPad Mini without discussing its position within Apple’s iPad lineup. As mentioned above, its 7.9-inch display is smaller than the standard iPad’s 10.2-inch panel, but it adds Apple’s True Tone technology and an anti-reflective coating. It’s also more resistant, with a laminated display to prevent scratches and other damage.

The larger iPad Air and iPad Pro models are significantly more expensive. Due to their size, they don’t quite fill the same niche as the iPad Mini. That said, if you want a larger device and can spend a few hundred dollars more, the iPad Air or Pro won’t disappoint.

What’s good?

iPad Mini multitasking

What drew me to the iPad Mini over the other options is its size. The first tablet I truly loved was the Nexus 7 , and despite the OS change, this gave me the same experience. I wanted a smaller tablet to use for reading and occasional media consumption, and that’s exactly what I got.

The base model comes with 64GB of storage, which is adequate if a bit small for a tablet in 2023. When it was released, this was twice the size of the cheapest iPad (9th-gen), but nowadays 64GB is really the bare minimum. Personally, I don’t download much media to my tablet, so at no point was I in danger of running out of space.

At first glance, the iPad Mini design looks dated with large bezels and a physical fingerprint reader/home button. More expensive models like the iPad Air and iPad Pro look much sleeker. The iPad Mini 6th gen also looks better, with smaller bezels and a fingerprint sensor in the power button. However, in this case, I often found that smaller bezels actually reduce the usability of the device. It’s nice to have some space to hold a tablet without unwanted taps, and I’m more than willing to give up a little screen real estate for it. With the newer model, I find it more difficult to read while laying down in bed, for example, and the flat metal edges make it far more slippery.

As expected, battery life is excellent. When reading or browsing the web for a few hours a night, the battery easily lasted for a week. Streaming video drained the battery a bit faster, but you can expect to meet or exceed Apple’s promised 10-hour battery life.

In terms of actually using the device, iPadOS has come a long way in recent years. It now has multitasking tools, mouse-and-keyboard support, widgets, and a host of other features that make it a breeze to use.

What’s not so good?

Designer Graphic Design Tablet Apple iPad Mini 5

It’s hard to find many negatives with the Apple iPad Mini 5, especially considering the lack of competition in the space. The only real drawback is that it’s only compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil, which has an awkward charging method. It plugs into the bottom of the tablet and sticks straight out. This both looks ridiculous and renders the tablet virtually unusable.

Apart from that, the dated design may turn away some consumers. Sure, Apple could have slightly reduced the bezel sizes. It also could have switched to the more ubiquitous USB-C charging standard. Still, neither of these should be dealbreakers for those looking for a small tablet.

If they are dealbreakers, both have been remedied in the newer version of the device. It’s more expensive, but if you do any kind of digital art, it’s worth it for the Apple Pencil 2 compatibility alone.

Apple iPad Mini (2021)

iPad Mini 5 review: Should I buy it?

If you want a small tablet, the iPad Mini 5 is still a great option in 2023, provided you can actually find one. That said, the iPad Mini 6 ( $389 at Amazon ) is a significant improvement in most regards. It’s less comfortable to hold, but it’s more powerful, has more features, and sports a larger screen than its predecessor. That said, the software experience is every bit as great on the older model, and if you can find a good deal, it could still be a better buy.

For consumers that just want a good tablet and don’t mind a larger size, the standard iPad ( $413 at Amazon ) offers incredible value. The iPad Air $559 at Amazon and iPad Pro ( $786 at Amazon ) are more expensive, but they’re both among the best tablets money can buy. There’s also a small selection of good Android tablets for those who want to avoid Apple’s ecosystem, but none can truly match Apple’s offerings in terms of performance.

Apple Watch Series 10

These are the new apple products launching this fall 2024.

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

We’re just one month away from fall, and the kickoff of Apple’s major product launch season. Summer has been quiet for new products, but Apple is gearing up for a big fall 2024 starting with its iPhone 16 event in September.

Here are all the new Apple products launching this fall.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

ipad mini 5 presentation

The flagship iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are set to offer big upgrades over last year’s models. Here’s the expected highlights list:

  • larger displays than ever , at 6.3 inches for the Pro model and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max, up from last year’s 6.1 and 6.7
  • a dedicated hardware button for controlling the camera
  • camera upgrades that include a better Ultra Wide camera, improved low light performance, and a 5x optical zoom
  • A18 Pro chip built for AI thanks to its supercharged Neural Engine

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus

iPhone 16 production now in full flow | 9to5Mac render

Unlike the Pro versions, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have the same display sizes as last year’s models. In a change from recent history though, the 16 and 16 Plus may receive the same A18 Pro chip found in the Pro and Pro Max models. Or perhaps, for the first time, we’ll see two new iPhone chips debut: an A18 for the lower end models, and the A18 Pro in the high-end. Another feature expected to come to all 16 models is the hardware button for camera features, often called the ‘capture button.’ Expect other camera improvements and new color options for the standard 16 and 16 Plus, with iOS 18’s AI features billed as a main selling point .

ipad mini 5 presentation

Apple is planning to launch not one, but two separate tiers of AirPods 4 models. These two models will provide a lower priced version and a more premium option, with both the AirPods 2 and 3 expected to be removed from Apple’s lineup. Both AirPods 4 models will feature USB-C charging cases and an updated stem design that looks like a blend between AirPods Pro and AirPods 3. Noise cancellation is said to be exclusive to the higher-end model, as well as Find My support.

AirPods Max 2

AirPods Max

At long last, AirPods Max are set to receive an update this fall . AirPods Max 2 will switch from Lightning to USB-C charging, and will likely gain several of the features currently exclusive to AirPods Pro 2 , such as Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Personalized Audio.

Apple Watch Series 7 vs 9 Display

Apple is going big with the new Apple Watch Series 10, with the two standard sizes both being increased. The smaller Watch will be about the size of the current larger model, while the larger option grows to match the Ultra’s screen size. The device’s case is also slimming down, and it will boast a more powerful chip that could lay the groundwork for Apple Intelligence in the future. Health sensors for detecting hypertension and sleep apnea are also possibilities.

Apple Watch Ultra 3

ipad mini 5 presentation

Apple Watch Ultra has proven a hit for the company, with annual updates offered since its 2022 debut. Not much is known about this year’s Apple Watch Ultra 3. It is certain to at least match the new capabilities of the Series 10 models, including a faster chip that’s better equipped for AI. We may get new health sensors too. One selling point that would excite lots of buyers is a space black titanium option.

M4 MacBook Pro

OLED MacBook Pro launch 2026 | 2023 models shown

The iPad Pro’s exclusive run as the only Apple device with an M4 chip is coming to an end soon. This fall Apple is expected to ship new MacBook Pro models that feature the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max. Don’t expect a major redesign of the computers’ form factor, with the M4 being the highlight this year.

iPad mini 7

Apple foldable – iPhone or iPad mini (shown)

The iPad mini hasn’t been updated since 2021, but that drought seems set to end soon. Following an iPad-free 2023, Apple plans to update its entire lineup this year, including the mini. Expect to see an upgraded display with no more jelly scrolling and a revised chip. Perhaps the iPad mini will even move to an M-class chip for compatibility with Apple Intelligence features .

iPad 11th gen

ipad mini 5 presentation

To complete its mission of updating the full iPad lineup this year, Apple will also ship a new base-model iPad. Little is known about this new device, but expect a newer, more powerful chip for sure. Perhaps some Apple Pencil enhancements too. But nothing in the way of a major hardware redesign.

M4 Mac mini with major redesign

smaller Mac mini concept

Apple has big—or should I say small—plans for this year’s Mac mini update. The new Mac mini will gain the M4 chip, with an M4 Pro option coming too. But the more substantial news is that the product is getting a major hardware redesign . The new mini will reportedly be drastically smaller, closer in size to the existing Apple TV 4K.

M3 iMac

Apple is also expected to launch M4 iMacs before 2024 ends. Unlike the Mac mini, the new iMac isn’t expected to receive a redesign or any other significant new features. Here’s hoping we’ll at least get USB-C accessories this time around.

Wild Cards: Apple TV 4K, HomePod with display, and more

There have been rumors off and on about new home devices in the works at Apple, possibly with a 2024 release date. One is an updated Apple TV 4K with a better chip, another is a HomePod revision with an LCD display on top. Neither update is likely to make waves, nor will they bring Apple Intelligence compatibility. We’ll have to wait and see what Apple has in store.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this app as much as I did. The stories are so intriguing and I was a little shocked to see K-dramas. I do wish that some of the K-dramas weren’t voiced by English actors though. I prefer just reading subtitles. It gets irritating when the mouth and words don’t match. I’m not the biggest fan of the ad situation, but I also don’t mind it either. I wish every episode was 2 minutes long and that there wasn’t a recap at the beginning. I noticed there aren’t many shows but I don’t know how long this app has been a thing so I hope more are to come. Overall I love the app. The acting is cringe at times but not as bad as some reviews make it seem. I can tell there’s a low budget so I wouldn’t expect too much anyway. Plus I feel like bad acting can make shows funnier. Still this app eats every show it puts out. I get so invested off of just a trailer. I feel like the use of adds and coins brings back what it felt like to watch shows on cable TV. Sometimes the anticipation made the show better. I also loved commercial bathroom breaks. At least I’m not waiting for a 1-2 minute clip everyday. I only have to watch an ad.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your feedback and we very appreciate that. Could you please tell us which show has the problem of discrepancy between the mouth and the words? We will convey your suggestion to relevant department and improve it. Please stay tuned for our new version. Thank you for your support.
Normally I do not leave reviews especially negative ones. These shorts are really entertaining and I ultimately enjoy watching them. However, I am very disappointed and upset that each “short” takes up a various amount of your coins. I started out watching every ad to get my coins for the day which landed me just over 230 coins. So I was a bit excited to watch more of the series I have been trying to get through. I figured that I would be able to watch at least 4 to 5 shorts (5 minutes or so of the series for the day) but I didn’t even get that. I was able to watch two which were less then a minute long. Afterwards it says I do not have enough coins. I would give this app a 5 star review if it wasn’t for the fact that somehow the price for each short adjusts based on how many coins you have. On top of that you cannot see the price of how much each episode costs until you are out of coins. Yesterday, the next episode said it was 58 coins. Today I had over 230 coins and was only able to watch two episodes? In other words one episode cost 58 coins and the next one took the rest. It seems like a major scam to get people to really fork out the money for the game without realizing what is going on. If the company fixes the issues then I will come back and update my review. If not my review will stay. Thank you for reading. Again this is not something I do in fact this is the first review I have ever done but I would hate to see people get scammed.

Money Hungry App

This app is a money grab. I downloaded it because I kept getting an ad for one show. I was like I might as well watch it. They prompt you every like 7 words to buy the app or watch more shows. It’s ridiculously expensive for corny shows. It cost more to buy this app then ANY streaming services and the shows are short and corny. I don’t think anyone besides children who aren’t spending their own money would do that. Anyway I watched one show over like a month would watch the ads whenever I was bored enough to do it then I get to the end of the show and they won’t let me watch the last few episodes without paying I can no longer use adds. As if they don’t make money from the ads already. Luckily because the show is corny and predictable I already know how it ends so it is what it is. And it’s $20 a week (which is $100-$120 a month, $1040 a year). not even for unlimited shows you get a certain about of coins that let you watch certain shows. It’s all confusing and a way to take money. The most expensive streaming service I know of hulus bundle with live tv is like $74 a month and that’s 3 services AND live tv. The ads are all over a minute long for less than an minute of content you will be wasting your time if you are using this app. I wouldn’t waste your time with this app. Just watch your corny shows on your normal streaming platform and save yourself the time, energy, and money. You’re not missing anything by skipping this app.
