In 2016, V made his acting debut with a supporting role in KBS2's historical drama Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth under his real name. He also collaborated with fellow BTS member Jin for the Hwarang soundtrack entitled " It's Definitely You ". On June 8, 2017, he released " 4 O'CLOCK ", a song he co-produced with fellow BTS member RM , to celebrate BTS’ fourth anniversary.

V released his first full solo track outside of BTS, " Scenery ", on January 30, 2019 through the group's SoundCloud page. The ballad was written and composed by V—he also photographed the cover artwork—and produced by Big Hit producer Docskim, with additional contributions from two other Big Hit producers, Pdogg and Hiss Noise. It broke SoundCloud records for reaching 100 million streams from 20 million in over fourteen days, the shortest time for the platform. Over the course of the two weeks following its release, "Scenery" broke the daily streaming record nine times.  Seven months later, he released his second solo song and his first full English song entitled " Winter Bear " through SoundCloud, accompanied by a self-directed music video via BTS' YouTube channel on August 9. He co-produced the track together with RM, Hiss Noise , and Adora . He also photographed the cover artwork using his pseudonym Vante .

In 2020, V participated in a song titled " Sweet Night " for the soundtrack of the JTBC drama Itaewon Class which was released on March 13, 2020. Produced, written and sung by V, the indie pop song is entirely in English. The song received generally favourable reviews for its composition, vocal performance and warm lyrics, and debuted at number 2 on Billboard 's U.S. Digital Song Sales chart, the highest debut for a Korean soloist in the chart's history. On December 25, 2020, V released a solo track titled " Snow Flower " featuring Peakboy.

On September 8, 2023, he will make his first official debut with his mini-album " Layover ".

Impact and influence

V coined the phrase "I purple you" during BTS' fanmeeting in November 2016. Ever since then, purple has become a symbol of BTS and their fans. UNICEF also used the phrase for their anti-bullying campaign in collaboration with BTS.

In 2018, Eugene Investment & Securities Co., Ltd. conducted analytical research on Google search trends relating to the K-pop industry. "V" ranked first on the chart, meaning it was the number one most searched keyword for the past five years in South Korea. In a survey conducted by Gallup Korea, V was chosen as the 4th most preferred idol of 2019; he was previously ranked 9th in 2018.

Various artists have cited him as an influence and role model, such as The Boyz 's Younghoon , Hyun Jun (former The Boyz's Hwall), Golden Child 's Jaehyun , K-TIGERS ZERO 's Hyunmin (former Rainz 's Byun Hyun-min), ATEEZ 's Yeosang and Mingi , former D-CRUNCH members Jungseung and Dylan , XEED 's Bao (formerly of Lucente ), NewKidd 's Yunmin , Boy Story 's Hanyu, TXT 's Beomgyu , and former Wanna One member Park Ji-hoon .

V possesses a baritone singing voice that has received a generally positive critical reception, with particular praise for his vocal range and "husky" tone. He gained wider vocal recognition for his performance of his solo song " Stigma ", and was praised for his falsettos that showed off his vocal range and unique musicality. V's tonality on "Singularity", the opening track of BTS' Love Yourself: Tear (2018), was noted as a prominent "tone setter" on the album by music critic Blanca Méndez. Similarly, Katie Goh of Vice deemed it as "one of V's best vocal performances." Karen Ruffini of Elite Daily stated in their article that "V... has no problem producing super soothing, low tones that are a key element in the overall sound for BTS," with Tamar Herman from Billboard also noting that V's lower range is a prominent piece of BTS' music. V's musicality is heavily influenced by his love for jazz and classical music. Eric Benet and Ruben Studdard are among his inspirations.

As a performer, V's style is known for its "duality", or his ability to evoke various emotions on stage. British journalist Rhian Daly, writing for NME , particularly noted this when discussing V's performance of " Singularity " during the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour, describing his movements as "precise and deliberate". Crystal Bell from MTV noted V's performances often work with live cameras in concert venues, and how he utilizes them to create subtle expressions during performances.

V’s inspiring journey as the hidden member of BTS to the #1 Asian soloist in the world.

taehyung biography

Today, Kim Taehyung or V of BTS is a household name. Today, the world sings songs of his talents, kindness, beauty, and records. It is impossible to imagine BTS without V’s soulful vocals, his jaw-dropping performances, and a personality brimming with kindness and cuteness. However, in 2013, BTS was visibly a six-member group as V was only revealed a few weeks prior to their debut. He was never shown in Bangtan Bombs, members logs, or on any social media posts prior to the official announcement. While Big Hit Entertainment has stated him as their “ Secret Weapon ” and fans concluded it as a marketing strategy, V has on various occasions talked about the downsides of being the hidden member. In his first-ever log, he mentioned that he felt lonely and said: “Even when we shot as a complete group, I wouldn’t be seen on screen but I was sitting next to the trash can.”

However, with the official announcement of BTS’s seventh and final member, one of the sub-vocalist and a visual of the group, V took over the hearts of fans fairly quickly. In under seven years, V has become one of the most popular and acclaimed members of the group.

Since debut, V has been widely known for his charismatic stage presence. His powerful dance moves, deadly facial expressions, and gestures have earned him the title of “ Stage Genius .” Today, numerous rookie idols express their desire to be a performer like him. Today, V holds multiple records with his fancams, most notably being the idol with the most-watched, most-liked, and most-commented solo fancam in K-pop history. So it comes to no surprise that he is now an official member of BTS’s dance line.

In the earlier pieces of BTS’s discography, V was quite popular for his “growling” as many fans noted his deep voice as extremely sexy. As the years passed and the fans heard more of V’s voice, he became known as the one with the most distinctive voice color as well as the most soulful vocalist.

Several media critics have cited V’s lower range as a "prominent piece of BTS’s music” and remarked him for his vocal range and unique musicality and said: “V has no problem producing super soothing low tones that are a key element in the overall sound of BTS.”

Today, V is the vocal line member with the most KOMCA credits to his name proving his capabilities as a record producer. Furthermore, thanks to his solo songs: “ Scenery ” and “ Winter Bear ” which he released in the year 2019, V was reported as the “most-streamed artist on SoundCloud in 2019”

With the release of his first-ever solo song on paid platforms, V has written his name in music history as the first and only artist in the world to dominate the iTunes chart of 115 countries. V surpassed “ Hello ” by Grammy-winning artist Adele and has achieved records that popular western “chart monsters” such as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Drake are yet to achieve. He is also the only Asian soloist in history to dominate the major music markets in the world. With songs he has written, produced and sung such as “Winter Bear” “Scenery” and “ Sweet Night ”, V has reigned over the charts and streaming platforms rightfully earning him the title of “ #1 soloist in the world.”

TaehyungGlobal_

As a visual of the group, V has quite effortlessly proven his role as the “ stan attractor of the group. ” Whether it was with his “orange hair” in 2014 or going viral every time, BTS attended a western award show, V has stolen the hearts of fans worldwide. Today, V holds over 20+ visual titles and plastic surgeons and professionals across the globe deem his visuals as “unique and stunning” earning him the honorable title as the “ visual representation for K-pop .”

Moreover, V’s unique creativity and his ability to always think outside the box has left a significant mark in BTS’s history. “ I Purple You ” coined by V is a phenomenon. The color “purple” has officially become one of the most prominent factors in BTS’s career. Whether, it is the landmarks being lit up in purple in honor of the group or renowned brands, celebrities and media associating the color purple, and the purple hearts with BTS and ARMY, V has created a symbol for BTS.

One thing that hasn't changed in seven years is V’s endearing personality, his unique take on life and his ever-growing love for the fans. Whether it is his blurry selfies, his authentic fashion, his random love confessions, or his wish to heal people through his music, performances, and interactions, V has continued to be the “happiness preacher” for the fans in every way he could.

V who ended his first log with the promise that he would show many sides of him to the fans have over the years, successfully proven himself to be a multi-talented idol. He is today, an icon to many, an inspiration to fans worldwide and an incredible role model. With BTS renewing their contract for seven more years, it is exciting to see what more V has in store for the fans.

A young boy who had to stand by the trashcan while his members were making vlogs and talking to their soon-to-be fans, someone who had his dreams crushed over and over, someone who had so many false scandals and got so much hate... But someone who kept smiling and working, improving and laughing, someone who finally was able to achieve his dreams...

Taehyung really has come a long way from a young country-side boy to a man who most people think of when they think of Kpop or Korea in general, he has really grown alongside BTS and still remained his humble, smiling self! I'm always so proud to be a fan of a man like this with outstanding talent and overflowing love from his huge heart! We bora you, Taehyung!!!

It's amazing to see how far these boys have come, V is really a total package along with the other members! I think all of them have really proven themselves! I'm glad they aren't just sitting around doing nothing during these hard times with covid.

BTS V ‘s Childhood and Family Background

V was born as Kim Taehyung on December 30, 1995 in Daegu in South Korea. The premonitory dream informing about his birth was as follows: His father made a bet on a snooker game against a dragon and he won the bet. The dragon gave a pearl to his father and Taehyung came out of this pearl as it opened up.

taehyung biography

Taehyung grew up in Geochang County in South Gyeongsangi , which is considered as countryside and has a different dialect than dialect of Seoul . The names of parents of V are not disclosed, we know that they are alive, and their occupation was farming when V came to world. He is the eldest of three children. Kim Taehyung has two younger siblings, one boy and one girl, whose names are Kim Eonjin and Kim Jeonggyu . Due to the intensive and highly scheduled lifestyle of being a trainee and then an idol, he could not spend much time with his family. He felt a deep pang of sorrow for becoming distanced from his family. Accordingly, (at MCD Backstage) he purported that if he would have got day off, he wanted to see his parents. Moreover, at another occasion, V suggested the 3 requirements for his happiness to be the family, health and honor.

taehyung biography

Kim Taehyung ‘s grandmother was a pivotal figure in his childhood and adolescence until he was 14 years old. While being supportive, V ‘s parents could not spare much time for him due to their busy schedules required by farming activities from morning till night. His grandmother was there to fill in. When Taehyung lost his grandmother, and shortly afterwards grandfather, he seemed to fall into a state of deep sorrow and became quieter and more composed.

V expressed that he first aspired to be a singer by the time of his 5th or 6th year in the Chagnam Elementary School . However, he conceived that his dream is becoming a professional singer coincides with the time he began taking saxophone lessons in his early secondary school period. Afterwards, he also enrolled into a dancing school. V revealed when he attended The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his passion for music went back to days when he was learning to play saxophone since his dad said that a singer should play at least one instrument. Taehyung further emphasized that if he had not have joined BTS , he might have chosen a professional career as a saxophone player . He also mentioned that if music did not have a place in his life, he would have been a farmer as his parents.

taehyung biography

V ‘s parents’ most important career input for him was, beyond doubt, to permit for his audition to be a K-pop idol. On the day V ‘s mother sent V to the trainee dorm, despite they were poor, she bought him a very expensive jacket. Other boys thought that he was a rich kid. The truth was that his mother didn’t want the rich city boys to make fun of her son. In fact, the other boys were also coming from families which were nowhere wealthy, too. Indeed, his bandmates thought that day V was a rich guy who might make fun of them :)

Tae’s role model is his dad. He wants to be a dad like his dad, someone one who takes care if his children, listen to everything they say, encourage and advise for their future plans.

As another detail, V and Jimin used to be classmates in Korean Arts High School , from where he graduated in 2014 .

taehyung biography

Kim Taehyung initially went to the Big Hit Entertainment audition to support a friend. At that incident, he was walking and looking around Big Hit’s Academy building, where one of the personnel from Rookie Development Group of the company noticed his eye-popping visuals and asked him if he would consider an audition. He called his parents, got their permission, and was auditioned. He aced the audition and you know the rest.

taehyung biography

V ‘s nicknames are TaeTae (friends call him like this because it’s easy to say) and BlankTae , because he has blank expression most of the time. Before he received his stage name, he had the choice of picking either Six , Lex , or V , and he chose V , because it stands for victory .

Taehyung was the last member revealed in the group, when the debut teaser pics were released for eac of them. Before that, the group was known as a 6 members group. As an interesting detail, he almost debuted as a rapper in BTS rather than a vocalist.

taehyung biography

In the group, he is the closest with Jin and Jungkook . In the old dorm, he used to share a room with RM (by then his stage name was Rap Monster). In the new dorm he had his own room. In the dorm V was in charge of the washing machine.

V first took stage together with BTS in Mnet’s M-Countdown program on June 13, 2013 , where they performed the song “ No More Dream ” from their cool debut album “ 2 Cool 4 School “.

In the video below you can enjoy his development as a BTS idol year by year:

His BT21 character is a red anthropomorphic heart named Tata who wears a blue onesie with yellow polka-dots.

BTS V is among the most popular idols of Kpop

taehyung biography

In 2018, Eugene Investment & Securities Co. conducted analytical research on Google search trends relating to the K-pop industry . “ V ” ranked first on the chart, meaning it was the number one most searched keyword for the past five years in South Korea. According to Gallup Korea , he occupies the 4th spot in most preferred idol rankings as of 2019 .

V won the “ The Best Handsome Face (2017)” and “ The Best Handsome Man in the World (2018)” titles. V is announced as the “ Most Handsome Man of 2020 in the World ” by YouTube channel Top 10 World , which has over 300,000 subscribers. Taehyung captured the number 1 spot in the Top 10 Most Handsome K-pop male phase 2020-2021 according to TopGomiz . On top of that, V has held the top spot of “ Ultimate Asian Heartthrob of 2020 ” list of Starmometer . Netizens are voting for V for three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020 in this list.

taehyung biography

Several idols from other Kpop groups regard V as their role model. Among them we can highlight Younghoon ve Hwall from The Boyz , Jaehyun ve Jangjun from Golden Child , and Hanyu from Boy Story .

V became the first and only artist in the world to surpass 10 billion views on Tiktok with two hashtags ( #V and #Taehyung ). His iconic line “ I’m Good Boy ” has suddenly become a viral challenge on TikTok .

BTS V has a distinctively deep and rich vocal tone

taehyung biography

V is a baritone , but he can also sing in falsetto ! His voice is most distinguishable from other members for its deep, husky vocal range. Karen Ruffini of Elite Daily stated in their article that “ V has no problem producing super soothing, low tones that are a key element in the overall sound for BTS. ” He can also reach notes higher than what he’s supposed to be; for instance, he can pull off C6 and D6 which is higher than a tenor. Tamar Herman from Billboard said that “ with a wide range and a deep tone, V ’s expressive vocals are a mainstay to BTS ‘ sound. ”

He is known for his love of classical and jazz music as well as trot (old Korean popular music known for its use of repetitive rhythm and vocal inflections). American musicians Ruben Studdard and Eric Benet are both artists who inspired V . His favorite songs include “Hello in There” by Joan Baez , “Blue Room” by Chet Baker and “Every Kind of Way” by H.E.R. “Rain” from Lee Juck is also an important song for him because he associates that song with a painful memory. The first ever album that V bought was a Girls’ Generation album. We can discern the impact of these artists in his vocals and in music he composes. But his distinctive feature is his special touch that differentiates him from every other artist. He also likes searching for good songs that not many people know about.

V ‘s visuals left you mesmerized

taehyung biography

V ‘s visuals are distinctive, and they are out-of-this-world level beautiful. He said his fans were calling him “ CGV (Computer Graphics V) ” because in their eyes, he has facial features so perfect that they look like they were made with computer graphics.

His eyes are also made of pure beauty. By the way, he has one single eyelid and one double eyelid.

On top of his beautiful visuals, he has the absolute best natural aegyo (Korean word for behaving in a cute, flirtatious and coquettish manner), which carries his stage presence to the next level.

Kim Taehyung is the third tallest member of BTS among RM and Jin . He is not focused to make muscles, but he has six-pack abs and muscular, long legs, which became iconic in his self-shot Karaoke video (see the video below). He says “ I work out as well, but just when I reach to the needed fitness level for out comebacks, I just quit training “.

V says his hands, especially his beautiful, long fingers are his favorite body part. We couldn’t agree more! Kim Taehyung loves to give signature in V pose with his victorious fingers .

He revealed in a Weverse reply that he has a chronic medical condition called cholinergic urticaria , whereby the afflicted person gets too warm, their skin breaks out in hives. V ’s skin care treatment on the plane includes soaking cotton pads with toner and putting on twice as much lotion. Tae also has a video for facial skincare tips, which is infamously titled as “ Go to Bed with Taehyung ” – you can watch it below:

He has a total of 5 ear piercings. (2 on the right, and 3 on the left). Finally, he has three moles in his face- one under his right eye, one under the nose, and one in his lower lip. They are just cute.

BTS V ’s fashion style manages to be versatile and harmonized at the same time!

taehyung biography

What is also notable about V is that his style is both versatile and harmonized at the same time.

His style is versatile in the sense that he can go both ends of the spectrum of modern and classic looks. He prefers colorful, bold patterned shirts and polos inside pants, which are generally dark monocolor, but he can match printed top with a printed bottom. At one instance you see him in basic causal clothes colored in earth-tones (aka Skywalker from Star Wars), other day you are bedazzled when you see him in a stage costume in which he glitters like a prince or a ballet. He also uses red color often, which is something not many can pull off. He also likes to wear striped tops. Taehyung tops off his looks with bandanas, sport-bands, and berets which add a touch of playfulness to his outfits. We can easily assert that V is the ultimate bandana guy , he just looks fantastic with a one! :)

taehyung biography

V likes the Italian luxury brand Gucci , and he is frequently spotted wearing the brand. You can often spot the iconic tiger figure of Gucci on him. His phone case, sweater, watch, choker, sunglasses, bag, and almost everything :) was bought from that line. Because he likes it so much and he is constantly seen wearing their products, many fans have started to think of him as a Gucci ambassador . Note that although V often prefers Gucci , he is not a Gucci Ambassador or a Gucci Model, for the reason that Big Hit Entertainment artists are not allowed to be sponsored by any brand . This is a clever strategy, since it gives them the flexibility to wear what they want, when they want. Even if Big Hit considers a sponsorship, it must be for all of the seven members at once.

taehyung biography

In January 2020 at Grammy Music Awards , V impressed the audience with an understated black turtleneck, signature wide pants, and a long black coat. The subtle elegance of the look combined with Kim Taehyung ‘s outstanding visuals made fans just go crazy. His earned the moniker “Guy in All Black” at that fantastic night.

taehyung biography

BTS V has a very special personality

V is one of the K-pop idols with a so-called 4D personality, which means he has a weird or eccentric personality and tends to think outside of the box. He is totally a creative guy. In Korea, having a 4D personality is more of a compliment. That is probably the one of the reasons why fans are so deeply obsessed with him. Whenever you see V on the screen, it’s bound to be entertaining. As a detail, he doesn’t like to be called 4D.

Taehyung is very friendly, caring and cheerful. He has a kind heart and really loves children. He’s a good person to talk about problems, he’ll always listen without judging. He likes to hang out with people he knows, and we can often see him spending times with his fellows and other people, rather than staying alone. His bandmates say he has the most outgoing and noisy personality in the group.

On the other hand, lately, he seemed to have suddenly changed from that bubbly person to someone who talks if needed or quiet most of the time. He became someone who doesn’t easily show emotions in front of so many people. Someone who is collected and can easily pull off the blank face. The fact that he doesn’t smile, doesn’t mean he is depressed. Nobody has to smile all the time. He is at times can be a moody person, which most probably feeds into his genius in creating great pieces of art in his own music production and in his photography.

taehyung biography

Many people also call V as “ alien ” since V has many “out-of-this-world” actions like talking to himself. It is admirable when he can freely express himself in such unique way. Once Jimin caught him talking to himself while doing his laundry. When he unintentionally cut his hair during shooting of music video for the song “ Danger “, he poured out his grief to a dog on the street. If he had a superpower, he expressed that it would be to talk to cars. He loves bright weather, but his favorite season is Fall.

taehyung biography

He is carefree just like kids because he does whatever he wants without being afraid of what people may talk about him. In essence, Taehyung can act weird at times, but he does this in such a confident and nonchalant way that you can’t help but impress and become enchanted by him!

He likes the painting ‘ Starry Night ‘ by Van Gogh . He has a picture of it hanging in his dorm room as well a phone case of it. We can easily say that his artistic style resonates the style of art by his favorite artist: mesmerizing, unique, punctuated, enigmatic and blurry!

taehyung biography

BTS V coined the iconic phrase: “ I Purple You “

V came up with the famous phrase “ 보라해 ” ( Borahae ), which means “ I purple you ” (Bora means purple/violet and saranghae means I love you, combination is Borahae, which means purple+action = purple you). This phrase, as well as the color purple itself, has become a trademark for BTS and ARMY . This phrase is BTS ‘ way of showing their love and trust for ARMY . Purple is seen as a color that indicates long-lasting trust, love, and affection. V elaborates on the meaning of the phrase as such: “ Purple is the last color of the rainbow colors, so it means I will trust and love you until the end; until the last breath of mine ”.

taehyung biography

Big Hit Entertainment sponsored “ #ENDviolance ” campaign of UNICEF in November 2017, where UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore extended her sincere thanks to BTS and the BTS ARMY for their effort to raise over $1 million (later this increased to $ 2 million) for their work to end violence against children and young people. She said: “ From your music to your messages to your donations, you’ve shown the power of kindness. We here at UNICEF purple you! ”

BTS V has played a role in a major K-drama !

V appeared in the Korean television historical drama Hwarang , which began airing in December 2016 and finished in February 2017. He played the role of Hansung , who is an adorable, cute and innocent character in the series. Taehyung was the youngest actor of the cast. If you haven’t watched yet, we urge you to watch it as the series has an interesting plot and a great cast including the highly acclaimed actor Park Seo-joon . The IMDB score of the series is 7.9 , which can be regarded as a decent score.

V has adorable plans for future: retirement, love, and family affairs

Regarding to his retirement, V thinks he will continue his career until 40 such as singing and acting without a problem.

He declared that he had not been in a serious relationship yet and his hope is to marry his first love. He wants to devote the rest of his life to my future wife. So romantic! Moreover, he wants three children.

His ideal type is someone who takes care of him and does a lot of aegyo . He wants someone who is charming and wears chic clothing and wide pants. He likes long-haired women who are chic on the outside but have warm hearts. V ’s ideal woman is thoughtful, cares for him a lot and uses money wisely . Last point is highly important for V as in his answer to the profile questionnaire prepared by The Star in 2015, about his ideal girl type, he wrote: “ A girl that knows how to save money when I make money, someone to stop me if I spend too much money, a girl that says to buy a house before a car, and someone that is willing to give everything to their parents “.

He has not talked about the visual aspects he expects from a girl. However, he picked Lily Collins and Rachel McAdams as his Hollywood crushes. So, you can extrapolate from their characteristics :)

He said he had a dream of wearing a brown beret and coat, feeding pigeons at a park in fall. Another time, he said his ideal date includes going to an amusement park or a nearby nature park. Yet in another occasion he expressed he wanted to take his child to the zoo and give snacks to the pigeons. We understand that he really, deeply loves parks and pigeons.

taehyung biography

During the FEST 2020 celebrations, V confessed he hopes his children are best friends with the children of his fellow BTS members. During the 7th anniversary celebrations, Taehyung confessed in 20 years down the line, he hopes the members are together and they bring their sons and daughters together and they could enjoy a meal together.

V has done great solo music acts as well as notable collaborations

In December 2014 , V covered “Someone Like You” of Adele . He sang this song so soulfully with his deep voice bringing added layers of emotion. The clip is shot while V walking through a narrow street alley; while it looks so unsophisticated, it has an almost iconic sentimental ambiance.

V released a cover of “ Hug Me ” of Joonil Jung with his BTS bandmate J-Hope in May 2015 . The song starts with soothing, delicate vocals of V and suddenly J-Hope enters with his fast, textured rap. Such an addictive combination…

V had his first solo song “Stigma” within the 2016 album “Wings” , which hit 10th rank on the Billboard World Digital Singles Chart.

Together with his bandmate Jin , V sang “It’s Definitely You” for the original soundtrack of TV series “Hwarang” that he also acted.

In June 2017 , V released “ 4 O’Clock “, which was a song he co-produced with fellow BTS member RM , to celebrate BTS’ fourth anniversary.

V ‘s second solo song , “Singularity” was released in May 2018 as the trailer for BTS’ then upcoming third LP , “Love Yourself: Tear” . It became viral in United States (in a reaction to the mesmerizing visual of V ) after two years of its debut when some random Twitter user posted it in her tweet.

V released his first full solo track outside of BTS, “Scenery” on January 2019 through BTS’ SoundCloud page. It broke SoundCloud records for reaching 100 million streams from 20 million in over fourteen days, the shortest time for the platform.

On June 14, 2019 , V , together with fellow BTS member J-Hope , collaborated with Swedish singer Zara Larsson on a song called “A Brand-New Day” for the soundtrack of their mobile game BTS World .

He produced and released the solo song “Winter Bear” in August 2019 , a masterpiece written and performed entirely in English . V released this song on 1000th day after he coined the phrase “ I purple you “. He also shot the video himself. Indeed, Taehyung is inspired by the movie “ About time “. During BTS’s tour, he stayed at the hotel alone and watched it. Jimin said during the tour, despite the busy schedule, instead of taking a rest, Taehyung went out everyday to record every short video, he really made a lot of efford to show us this freaking masterpiece . Taehyung also said when he was in London, he wanted to go out at 4 a.m to record the best scene sunrise. Other interesting details are that Taehyung was born in winter and his parents used to call him baby bear .

V had his solo song “Inner Child” in “ Map of the Soul:7 ” album released in February 2020 . Lyrics of this song goes straight to the heart as it is about how our inner child changed and matured. Chorus of the song is also a whirlwind of emotions.

On March 2020 , V composed, produced and sang “ Sweet Night ” for the original soundtrack album of the highly acclaimed TV series “ Itaewon Class “. The song fits the series so well and musically it is a masterpiece which fully divulges the musical depth and brilliance of Taehyung . It also became a record-breaking song. Six years later from his cover of Adele ‘s song, V has become the only artist to have a song at number one on iTunes in 117 different countries with the song “ Sweet Night “, breaking Adele ‘s record with her song “ Hello “.

V Shares The Journey That Led to Layover – And How His BTS Members Helped Get Him There

By Michelle Hyun Kim

Michelle Hyun Kim

Sure, V has achieved idol status during his decade-long career with BTS , received recognition as an actor for his supporting role in the 2016 Korean drama Hwarang , and established his own identity as a singer-songwriter . But he’s more than happy to admit that he doesn’t have it all figured out.

For the past three years, the 27-year-old musician and actor, born Kim Taehyung, has been continuously writing songs, showing them to fans in occasional video livestreams only to start over entirely. All of it has been in pursuit of finding the right direction for the debut solo album that eventually became Layover , out Friday.

“Instead of taking a direct route, you could stop somewhere and stay for a while, or take a transfer, or do a layover,” he tells Rolling Stone through an interpreter on a brutally hot summer day in Seoul. “I just felt that my life, wherever it’s headed, would not follow a direct path.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Layover builds on V’s previous solo tracks, which include 2019’s “Scenery” and “Winter Bear.” In 2020, he released the melancholic ballad “Blue & Grey” as part of BTS, using sparse images of flower-lined streets and snow to express his inner world of grief and loneliness. Layover is also filled with complicated feelings that surround a sense of nostalgia, with its romanticization of the past and all its regrets. These were ideas V had started exploring through his original themes for Korean dramas like “Sweet Night,” for 2020’s Itaewon Class and “Christmas Tree,” for 2021’s Our Beloved Summer . They’re also a testament to his growth as an artist since joining Big Hit Entertainment at age 15. Through BTS, he’s shown his versatility and charisma through DMX-esque hip-hop vocals , high-octane dance EDM, and fun party rap. Now, he is embarking on his own journey, setting the itinerary himself. “I’m just beginning to paint the picture that is Kim Taehyung,” V says.

While V perfected the songs on Layover , the album was executive produced by Min Hee Jin, the president of ADOR (a subsidiary label of HYBE), who has been renowned for her work on NewJeans, a group that draws on the spirit of the Nineties. Layover , however, delves further back into the past, with its palette of jazzy pianos, warm bass, and fluttering flute solos pulling from V’s love for jazz and classical music.

BTS' RM Unveils 'Right Place, Wrong Person' Track List Featuring Little Simz

Taylor swift, billie eilish, bts will get the 'bridgerton' orchestra treatment on season 3, rm left 'come back to me' video shoot to get stitches — and came right back to work.

Yet in conversation, V’s demeanor is the opposite of gloomy. Showing flashes of playfulness, he takes advantage of the time that the translator spends interpreting in English to draw a goofy face on the whiteboard in the HYBE meeting room. Then, he pretends not to know it exists when I ask him about it. Throughout the rest of the conversation, he’s earnest as he offers his thoughts on his songwriting process, watching his fellow BTS members release their solo work, his obsession with scenery, and how he would personally define what “romance” is.

What is the significance of this album title, Layover ? What kinds of thoughts or feelings does a layover bring up for you, and how did you express that in the songs? The title Layover came about while I was contemplating what my final destination is in my life and career and the way to get there. The intent behind naming my first solo album, Layover , is to represent a starting point ,like I’m just beginning to paint the picture that is Kim Taehyung.

I realized there’s a long way to the final destination of my life. There’s a lot of different ways to get to that final destination. Why not give yourself the time to rest, look back at myself, and create new goals? Thinking about all of that, I decided on the name Layover . I really hope that listeners of this album will also take it as an opportunity to reflect on their lives, think about their goals, and take some moments of rest wherever they need.

Last year, you mentioned in Weverse Magazine that you scrapped all the songs you made for this solo album and started fresh again. When you started over, did you want to go in an entirely new direction? For the past three or four years, I have been continuously songwriting and making music. Throughout that time, the thing that concerned me the most was how my taste and preferences, the kind of music I wanted to make, were changing every year, every month. You could say that I was being very ambitious about this solo album. I had an attitude of, “I wanna show this, and I wanna show that,” which is why the style [of the songs] continued to evolve.

The music that I’m working on now is stylistically different from this album.

So for Layover , what did you want to achieve with the production style? When I listened to it, I personally felt like there were jazz and classical music influences. As you mentioned, jazz and classical are my favorite genres, so I think I always had the desire to try making it myself. It was the music that I grew up listening to. Whenever I had free time, or when there was a break between my work, I tended to go back to those styles. I felt a sense of comfort while listening to them, so I really wanted to try to make music that also brings that feeling of consolation to the audience. While I was preparing this album, I thought, “Since this is the music that was always my source of comfort, why don’t I try to return the feeling for ARMY?”

When did you first start listening to jazz, and what about it drew you in? I started listening to jazz when I was around 14 years old, in my first year of middle school, but it was not really by choice. I had started playing saxophone, and I had to practice for school admission exams, so I listened to jazz a lot. But I actually really hated it at the time. I thought to myself that I would never listen to it again after I was done [preparing].

But after time passed, I started to notice it again. You know, when you’re walking down the street and you just hear music in passing? I started hearing jazz songs that  I recognized, like  “Oh, I know this one! Oh, this is that song!”And it suddenly felt very fresh. Jazz started to have a new meaning, because it wasn’t part of my work or studies. After hearing it more naturally, I started falling in love with the genre and seeing its merits. I think it was around my early 20s that I rediscovered my love for jazz again.

Oh definitely. You’re still young. Like we’ve both said, I think a lot of young people these days have nostalgia for an older time and they tend to romanticize it. To you, what does the word “romance” mean?  I think I live with the word “romance” in my mouth. It’s really part of my vocabulary. I tend to really enjoy the atmosphere and the vibe in the scenes of everyday life. I think I’m the kind of person to try to find meaning in everything. So whether that means going to beautiful places or eating delicious food or looking at nice scenery, I think that’s what romance is to me. You know, it’s like they say, “Live in style, die in style.”

In this album and the past songs you’ve written, you tend to reference a lot of nature, whether it’s rain, snow, the moon, or nighttime. Is it that you want to express your feelings through these kinds of images?  Yes. Our leader RM, he’s really great at writing lyrics in a poetic way, so I’m always learning from him. So whenever I study lyrics and write them myself, I tend to gravitate toward my favorite words. “Night” comes up a lot, because it’s my favorite time of day, and it tends to be the moments of my life when I think and reflect the most. “Snow” comes up because it indicates my favorite season. “Dawn” is also really great. I can be a person who thinks one-dimensionally or simply, so I try to adorn my songs with my favorite words. One by one, I try to bring out [the beauty of these words]. I try to learn from RM in that regard.

Did any of your fellow members help you specifically with this album? Or is there any feedback they gave you when they heard the songs?  So I didn’t realize this at the time, but I really didn’t show the songs in progress with my bandmates that much. In the beginning, since J-Hope was the first to release his solo album, he listened to my songs. And Jung Kook also listened to my work-in-progress with me, and we had a lot of discussions about what the direction should be. But what I think is really interesting, especially after talking with all of them, is that all seven of us really have our own unique color when it comes to music. Our approach is completely different, and the way that we want our performances to look are different too, so I think that’s what made those discussions very fun.

Why didn’t you show your members your songs that much?  It’s just that we didn’t have a lot of opportunities to meet in person, since we were all busy with our own personal schedules. For me, at that time, I was filming the show Jinny’s Kitchen . So whenever we did have a chance to meet, we just caught up on life, and we didn’t really have a chance to discuss music.

To ask a question about acting, I’ve read that you really want to play a villain, which feels a little unexpected. I’m wondering why that kind of role appeals to you. I’m someone who just really loves watching movies. Whenever I do, I find myself naturally drawn more to the villain characters rather than the heroes. When you watch a film, you have to look at the big picture, or the forest for the trees. I think that villains play a very big role in making that overall picture complete; they really have to sell their own charisma to make the movie come to life. If the villain doesn’t really have depth to their character, or if there’s no chemistry between the characters, then the hero can’t really shine either. So I always end up watching the villain characters closely. I’ve told a lot of my friends and people around me that I now have this ambition to play a villain at least once.

Taehyung Biography: One of the rising stars of the seven-piece, well-known South Korean group “BTS,” is “V,” also known as Kim Taehyung. Taehyung is a multi-talented man whose influence is felt both on and off stage in various contexts. He is a well-known singer, dancer, and songwriter. He is a charismatic and talented performer. In addition, “Tae” is another name for him. In the neighborhood and throughout the world, he is very noticeable. His captivating and powerful vocals have made him well-liked. In this post, let’s learn more about V’s life and profession.

On stage, the hip-hop performer works magic. He wrote and produced “2COOL 4 SKOOL” and “Boy in Luv,” the first hits for the group and the globe. His music is becoming popular worldwide and is not restricted by geography. He has five million followers on Twitter. V is regarded by girls worldwide as “eye candy.”

Taehyung Biography:

Every December 30, “Tae” cuts the cake and blows out the candle. His family greeted him warmly in 1995. The endearing boy turned 26 today. He comes from a prosperous family. His family is from Daegu, South Korea’s Seo area. South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea’s Geochang County, is where V was raised. V goes by a number of monikers, including Tae, Blank Tae, TaeTae, and others. A middle-class family enrolled the bright star at Changnam Elementary School for his early years of education. He was later transferred to Geochang Middle School. It was only here that V’s passion for music began to blossom.

Taehyung debuted as a member of BTS in 2013 with the song “No More Dream” from their first single album, “2 Cool 4 Skool,” on the music program “M Countdown.” With the band’s third EP, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1,” released in 2015, he received his first writing credit. He co-wrote and co-produced the song “Hold Me Tight,” and he also helped write the lyrics for the song “Fun Boyz,” which was co-composed by bandmate Suga.

He composed the melody for the song “Run” from the group’s fourth EP, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2,” in the same year. One of the songs on the band’s 2016 second studio album, “Wings,” is called “Stigma,” and Taehyung was involved in both its writing and composition. He chose to leave the boy group that same year in order to pursue a solo career after seeing an opening. He first unofficially released two covers: Adele’s “Someone Like You” and “Hug Me,” co-performed by bandmate J-Hope. Then, he and fellow musician Jin worked together on a duet called “It’s Definitely You,” which was included on the film “Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth,” a historical drama in which Taehyung made his acting debut. Along with co-producing the song “4 O’Clock,” he also released it to commemorate B.T.S.’s fourth anniversary.

2018 saw the positive release of Taehyung’s second solo song, “Singularity.” Both of the tracks, nevertheless, had something to do with BTS, since “Scenery,” his debut solo music, was made available on SoundCloud in 2019. Then, he and bandmate J-Hope worked together on a song named “A Brand New Day” with Swedish singer Zara Larsson for the mobile game “BTS World” soundtrack.

The same August, he released “Winter Bear,” his first complete English song and second solo single. In 2020, he released a solo tune called “Snow Flower” starring Peakboy and produced, composed, and sung a song for the drama “Itaewon Class” called “Sweet Night.” Taehyung made his first solo chart appearance in 2021 when he contributed the song “Christmas Tree” to the original soundtrack for the drama “Our Beloved Summer,” which debuted at number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100.

BTS declared on June 14, 2022, that they would be taking a break to focus on their solo ventures for a while. The tracks “Love Me Again,” “Rainy Days,” and “Slow Dancing” off his debut solo album “Layover,” which was released on September 8, 2023, marked his official solo debut.

With over 700 nominations and 500 victories, including Grammy nominations, Billboard Music awards, and many more, BTS is the most decorated K-pop group of all time. Taehyung has also received other nominations and accolades, such as “Best OST” for “Christmas Tree” at the 2022 APAN Star accolades and “Fan Choice of the Year” in the 2023 Seoul Music Awards.

Personal Life

He swiftly unfollowed Jennie from BLACKPINK on Instagram in 2021, leading to speculation that he was dating her. He refuted the relationship allegations on WEVERSE. After purported pictures of them together were released from her phone in May and August 2022, rumors started to circulate once again after he was allegedly seen driving around Jeju Island with someone who looked a lot like her. They were reportedly photographed strolling through Paris in May 2023. But neither of the parties—nor their agencies—denied or verified that they are dating.

How BTS Did It

Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS manages to layer an emotional history on top of the professional rise of the world’s biggest band.

the seven members of Korean pop band BTS stand in a row

In early May, rumors swirled on social media about a mysterious book. Its title wouldn’t be announced until June 13, but it was slated for worldwide publication on July 9, with an initial print run of 1 million copies. Media coverage focused on fan speculation that the author was Taylor Swift, a theory that drove a wave of preorders of the still-unnamed project. However, some of us immediately deduced that the book was actually about the South Korean pop group BTS. The biggest clue was that the announcement and release dates were each a major anniversary for the band—10 years since its debut and the naming of its enormous fan base, ARMY, respectively.

And indeed, within days the publisher, Flatiron Books, confirmed to The New York Times that the 544-page book was titled Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS . It was written by the South Korean journalist Myeongseok Kang (and translated into English by Anton Hur, Slin Jung, and Clare Richards), based on extensive interviews with the group’s seven members. But I still had questions, both as a fan and a cultural critic who has written my own book about BTS . How candid would the members be? Would the book speak mostly to diehards like me, or would it manage to capture the nature of stratospheric fame for general readers? After a decade of the group’s existence, how far would Beyond the Story go beyond the … well, you know.

Read: I wasn’t a fan of BTS. And then I was.

As it turns out, the book is less a traditional memoir or personal biography than a meticulous accounting of how BTS was born and became a worldwide juggernaut under the once-tiny record label Big Hit (now the massive entertainment company Hybe). For anyone who’s ever heard “Butter” on the radio and puzzled over the group’s ascent in America, Beyond the Story has answers: It’s a fascinating, complicated, and at-times anxiety-inducing chronicle of fan-driven global domination—as well as a highly accessible resource for newer devotees.

Many ARMYs first learn about BTS’s long, bumpy history in a piecemeal manner—through fan-made YouTube videos, official documentaries, livestreams, memes, and Twitter threads. Now this history is available in an unguarded, comprehensive package, narrated by Kang. Even for longtime enthusiasts, seeing BTS’s career laid out so deliberately is staggering. Kang covers every album, tour, and big awards show up until mid-2022, right before BTS announced that the members would temporarily be focusing on solo projects and preparing for their mandatory military service. The book doesn’t delve into their lives outside their job, which is unsurprising, given that the members are extremely protective of their personal relationships and known for working nonstop. But Kang still manages to layer an emotional history on top of the professional one. By contemplating their evolution as artists, BTS’s members also give readers a clear sense of how the crucible of fame forced them to grow as human beings.

Beyond the Story is divided into seven sections that trace the major eras of the group’s rise. Many readers will know where the story eventually goes—several No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits, Grammy nominations, countless historic firsts, multiple United Nations General Assembly appearances, a White House visit —but suspense still infuses the early chapters. Kang conveys the intensity and savvy of BTS’s leader, Kim Namjoon (stage name RM) , who was recruited as a teenager by the mastermind producer Bang Si-hyuk to form a hip-hop group with the fellow underground rapper and aspiring composer Min Yoongi (Suga) and the highly respected street dancer Jung Hoseok (J-Hope). Eventually Bang, wanting BTS to be more of a traditional idol group, brought in four vocalists: the unflappable eldest, Kim Seokjin (Jin); the perfectionist Park Jimin (Jimin); the versatile Kim Taehyung (V); and the golden maknae (or multitalented youngest), Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook).

Read: BTS’s ‘Life Goes On’ did the impossible

When they first meet, they experience the typical personality clashes of any new group: The clean freaks balk at the dirty dishes in the sink and sweaty clothes on the floor. The hip-hop aficionados hold constant lessons to teach the novices about rap music. Everyone, regardless of dance experience, practices the tough choreography until they’re perfectly in sync—all while they’re on strict diets. (ARMY will be pleased to know that Kang devotes several pages to the infamous mandu incident .) “The more you look back on BTS’s preparation for their debut, the more surprising it is that none of them quit in the process,” Kang writes. Even after that 2013 entrance, the members described experiencing isolation and facing mockery from many of their peers at bigger, more financially successful companies. So difficult were BTS’s first two years that when a Big Hit staffer informs the label’s vice president, “Something’s happening. Uh … they’re getting more and more fans,” the moment lands like a shocking twist.

In the first half of the book, Kang provides context about the broader K-pop world, showing just how many rules BTS broke to differentiate itself from its peers and predecessors. The members filmed vlogs offering fans an unpolished look at their lives, even sometimes criticizing Bang or the company directly—a “complete rejection of genre norms in Korea’s idol industry,” Kang writes. Of the unusually dark realism of 2015’s single “I Need U,” he observes, “Within the Korean idol industry, experimenting like this was no different from intentionally trying to ruin yourself.”

As a fan, I was astonished that the BTS members seemed to go a long time without knowing why their own supporters liked them so much. Even when they were confused by their popularity, they expressed deep gratitude to the people who boosted them. Jimin tells Kang, “Even now, I remember that one row next to the broadcast cameras during our first performance,” referring to the handful of fans who showed up to cheer them on as rookies. For ARMYs, this evidently genuine humility is part of what makes them so appealing—they’ve never behaved as though success was an inevitable outcome of their talent or hard work. Of “Dynamite” topping the Billboard Hot 100, Suga talks about not wanting to bask in the achievement: “I realized it would be wiser to get back down to Earth as quickly as possible. There was no need to be floating in the air like that.”

Read: The spectacular vindication of BTS

Beyond the Story immerses the reader in how bewildering this whole growth process was from BTS’s perspective. Extreme highs (appearing on the American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards, as well as major talk shows) are juxtaposed with profound lows (overwork, unrelenting depression, an increasing lack of privacy). The members open up about the stress of becoming huge in the U.S., a totally unfamiliar market, when six of the seven didn’t speak English. J-Hope recalls berating himself for not being able to master the language as quickly as intricate dance moves: “Each time, in the hotel room I thought to myself, ‘Oh, so I guess this is all I amount to.’” Once they began to adjust to the international nature of their fame, the pandemic arrived. They were forced to abandon their plans and experiment once again by releasing their first English-language single, “Dynamite,” whose success surprised RM: "The fandom must’ve craved it more than we’d thought," he said.

Not until this later part of BTS’s career, Kang writes, did the members transition from doing things for “the sake of outside approval or to prove themselves” to turning inward and “trying to reach a point of excellence where they could feel satisfied with their results.” Readers can appreciate how their interior growth has been almost inseparable from their artistic development. Jungkook, who joined Big Hit in middle school, talks about learning how to recognize his own emotions for the first time and “unleash” them in music. V reflects on growing older and going through an “adolescence of the mind,” before realizing that he’s the kind of musician who can write only when genuinely inspired. Jin talks about abandoning his obsessive worrying to the point of “living without any thought at all,” which allowed more “mental space” to sustain his work.

For fans, there’s something comforting about how much of this story we already know, and something satisfying about finally seeing it put down officially in words. To me, this familiarity is a reminder of how vulnerable BTS’s members have been from the beginning, even when the risk of self-revelation was high. Kang doesn’t touch on what lies ahead. The band’s future chapters have yet to be written, but this survey tells a complete story. It’s a document capturing how it feels to go from aspiring musician to worldwide superstar, and what it takes to do so.
