27 Feb 18 Best Youtube Movie Channels – You Must See Number 1!

Its Oscar time and in celebration of the 88 th Academy Awards this weekend we have been all things movies this past week. I had a review of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe (along with our first ever Youtube video ) and then an interview with movie producer Adi Shankar for you over the past week. Now I have compiled a list post of the 18 Best Youtube Movie Channels.

I am a big follower of Youtube channels and also the movie industry. It’s a creative art that requires a lot of different elements such as design, photography, business, music and of course, filmmaking. I’ve always been a fan of the movie industry as a whole and an admirer of the elements involved individually in the creation process.

As time has gone on I’ve found myself digesting movie news and reviews in a digital video format instead of print. I still love reading a long-form feature in a print format but when I’m looking for a review or the latest news in the industry then I now turn to Youtube.

I have compiled together a list of the best movie Youtubers that provide reviews, critics, news or information on the industry. No moviemakers are included in this list, just channels that can help you brush off on your movie knowledge in time for the Oscars.

Before we get started with this interview I highly recommended you grab a copy of our first ever print magazine. Volume 1 of 99 Percent Lifestyle has a limited print run and features a lot of movie related articles such as a behind the scenes look at the Martian, an interview with producer Adi Shankar (Dredd, Lone Survivor, The Grey) and a behind the scenes look at indie filmmaking. Read all about the first magazine here .

17 Best YouTube Movie Channels of 2020 To Check Out

Those on the smaller screen who know all about the big.

top movie reviewers on youtube

There’re tons of channels that celebrate a love for cinema, and even the more popular ones are seemingly uncredited for their insight, hilarity, and genuineness. That lack of representation needs to change, and I want to help change it. My most recent contribution? Compiling this list of talented, funny, wonderful human beings that love movies almost as much as I do.

In a year that had many of us feeling rather uncertain about our futures, the sense of comfort and familiarity these content creators have given us and continue to give us is nothing short of inspiring and certainly worthy of praise. In no particular order, here are 17 of the best YouTube movie channels of 2020. All figures are accurate at the time of writing.

1. C-Reel Productions

Christian’s ability to passionately discuss film and offer his perspective is merely a fraction of what makes C-Reel Productions an entertaining channel.

He currently has 10k subscribers and releases several videos weekly. The channel has been up and running since mid-November of 2016; since which time it has noticeably maintained its friendly vibe, primarily through Christian’s confidence in front of the camera. C-Reel Productions has a slight and enthusiastic focus on the superhero subgenre, but covers many other types of films as well.

2. The Reel Rejects

Debuting all the way back in 2012, Greg and John have been creating consistently good movie reviews, as well as humorous skits and reactions to trailers. Of course back then they went by Ryan and Jerry.

Since then, their channel has grown incredibly popular and the comedic duo have kept us updated with all sorts of movie news in a rather timely manner. If not from me, take it from any of their 788k subscribers, their videos are funny and entertaining, and they put out several new ones a week.

3. Tasha Tipton

Tasha began uploading videos just over a year ago and already has an impressive 7.59k subscribers. She’s sometimes joined by her friends, Emma and Elizabeth, whose reactions are just as priceless as Tasha’s. The channel explores all kinds of genres and even reacts to episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well.

I believe that, with its positive vibe and genuineness of the reaction videos and reviews, Ms. Tipton’s channel has a lot of potential to reach a much wider audience this year, and it would be well deserved.

4. Austin Burke

Austin’s channel has been up and running for about 6 years now and is currently keeping 82.1k subscribers in the loop with neatly edited movie news updates, and well-thought-out rankings and reviews.

It’s obvious that not only does Austin put a lot of effort into these videos, he’s also having fun doing it. He discusses theatrical releases and streaming service productions, several times a week, seemingly with ease. If you’re casually surfing the internet one night unsure of what to watch, Austin’s channel has binge-worthy content that will keep you occupied.

5. Decker Shado

The self-proclaimed “internet personality with the best hair” has a knack for talking fast and thinking even faster. Adequately combining impressive hilarious timing with in-depth critiques of both mainstream and cult films, Decker’s channel never fails to entertain.

He currently has 172k subscribers and 12 years worth of content, with some of his videos including comedic skits, as well as additional notes for his reviews. Even if the movie itself isn’t up your alley, Decker’s reviews are sure to have you laughing.

6. Ashleigh Burton

Almost a year after Ashleigh started her YouTube channel, she’s already at a noteworthy 49.4k subscribers. She has a series of reaction and review videos titled, “Millenial Movie Mondays” where, as the title clearly indicates, Ashleigh reacts to movies that she hasn’t seen.

A lot of the movies seem to be suggestions from her subscribers. It’s obvious a lot of work goes into creating and editing her videos, and the payoff is her genuinely interesting reactions to movies you and I have likely etched into our minds. Extra points for Beans the cat.

7. The Flick Pick

The first thing that got me hooked on John Flickinger’s videos is his love of physical media, primarily because I can relate to that. The Flick Pick is his main channel and has 277k subscribers, and his second channel, John Flickinger, has 97.4k subscribers.

Both feature insightful, well put together videos that terrifically capture what it’s like to be a shamelessly passionate cinephile with seemingly unmatchable heart and energy. His primary channel has been up for 10 years and his secondary channel has been around for 9.

8. Cinema Rules

In just over 5 months of creating videos, Shaun and Tom have managed to attract 42.3k subscribers. The two of them react and review movies one or the other, and sometimes both, have not seen previously.

They began their channel by reviewing classic horror movies and have since explored other genres. One of the most appealing aspects of Cinema Rules is the brotherly bond between the hosts, who clearly aspire to be filmmakers and are passionate enough to pull it off.

Vicky’s original channel has unfortunately fallen victim to YouTube’s restrictive and sometimes unclear policies, however she’s since created a secondary account with the same wonderful effort and insight that makes her channel so unique. Her new channel is currently at 27.8k subscribers, though it’s merely been active for 2 months.

Vicky really focuses on the films she watches to the same professional degree any respectable film critic would. The amiable and intelligent content creators are the most entertaining, and it’s especially evident at VKunia.

10. We Watched A Movie

Mike and J at We Watched A Movie have come a long way in the 9 years they’ve been reviewing movies and creating hilarious parodies and skits, and any of their 125k subscribers will surely tell you the same.

They upload new content weekly, as well as participate in live streams and unboxing videos. Half the fun of their channel is the positive vibe and wild energy the two hosts bring with their big personalities and even bigger appreciation for films, new and old. They’re down to Earth and appreciate their subscribers more than any popular influencer I’m aware of.

11. Zach Pope

No one embodies the spiritedness of cinephilia quite the same way Zach does. He’s been a film critic on YouTube for about 6 years now, reaching 17k subscribers.

There is no shortage of content available with thorough, articulate reviews for an array of films and shows of various genres and subgenres. Zach usually uploads a few videos a week and will occasionally do live Q&A streams, where he continues to clearly show his love for cinema.

12. Facci’s Faccmonster Cinema

Matt began his channel in June of 2020 and has shown a terrific appreciation and knowledge of horror films, often reacting to classics he’s not yet seen via live streams and enjoyable reviews.

Obviously a fresher face on YouTube and catering to what many would say is a niche genre, the Faccmonster is still reaching 280 subscribers, rightfully climbing in viewership and subscriptions week after week. Whereas many reviewers began with semi-grainy videos taken from harsh angles, Matt’s editing and set up puts him ahead of the curve.

13. Stoned Gremlin Productions

Currently at 166k subscribers, Stoned Gremlin Productions is the home of Brad Jones’s “Cinema Snob” host persona and Lloyd the Siamese Cat. The channel has been around since 2015 and never misses an opportunity to comedically offer in-depth criticisms and feedback on movies old and new.

More than that, post-screening reviews with members of “Team Snob” are also worthy of a subscription. One of the most entertaining aspects of The Cinema Snob is the comical and clever pop culture references found in each upload — and Lloyd. Obviously.

14. Drumdums

Not only is Lee one of the nicest human beings on YouTube, he’s also a retired Air Force MSgt, a Rotten Tomatoes critic, and he’s also an avid drummer. Imagine having all that energy, as well as faithfully uploading to YouTube for 7 years, and it’s easy to understand why he has 41.4k subscribers.

Providing thorough critiques and convention videos, Drumdums is easily one of the most enjoyable channels around. Whether it’s reviews, reactions, rankings or revisists, Drumdums is a worthy watch.

15. Chris Stuckmann

One of the most professional and affable film critics around today, Chris Stuckmann is also an author . He currently has 1.88 million subscribers and it’s of course something very well deserved.

Chris has excellent diction, an understanding of the many facets of filmmaking, and balances humor with his professionalism. His channel, now in its 10th year, covers many films, old and new, of different genres and subgenres. You can expect a couple new uploads a month.

16. Jimmy Champane

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMJj-B2p5z8

Jimmy’s channel offers movie news, retrospectives, and more recently, a Halloween fan film. The channel has definitely leaned more towards cinephiles and horror fanatics, though anyone can find joy and be easily fascinated by Jimmy’s kind nature and ability to professionally discuss cinema.

He has 31k subscribers and counting, with a couple monthly video uploads to look forward to. As with every channel I’m listing, Jimmy Champane has a great eye for background set up, thumbnail creation and video editing.

17. Dr. Wolfula

This channel has it all: a memorable host, ruminative, albeit succinct explanations and criticisms, and in-depth knowledge of genre films.

10 years and 107k subscribers later, Dr. Wolfula manages to keep his channel fresh and entertaining, and the amount of dedication to detail is indisputably awe-inspiring. You don’t necessarily have to be a fan of the horror genre to enjoy Dr. Wolfula’s content. In fact, I would argue his reviews are more in-depth than most other reviewers’.

There’s truly something for everybody, and these are just a few of my favorite YouTubers. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to check out these channels. Let us know how many you subscribe to.

Bruce Willis' Action-Comedy Comic Book Adaptation Finds New Success On Netflix 14 Years Later

New mandalorian movie footage teases a massive change for grogu, all 7 horcruxes in harry potter & how they were destroyed.

With Wakanda Forever closing off Phase Four on November 11, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing for an introduction to its fifth phase, and many fans are excited to see what the franchise has to offer. Yet, many are also questioning how all these new Phase 4 characters connect to each other, with the multiverse looming as the main arc. After all, most Marvel movies are now somewhat disconnected.

Thankfully, there is a vast host of YouTube reviewers and analysts who are dedicated to explaining the intricacies of movies and anything fans might have missed. Most of these YouTube video essays are made by some key YouTubers who do an excellent job getting fans caught up in the worlds of Hollywood.

YourMovieSucksDOTorg

The Youtube Channel of YourMovieSucksDOTorg

Some reviewers do a great job of taking apart popular movies to show why they're excellent. The film YouTuber YourMovieSucksDOTorg is best at showcasing just why fans may dislike certain movies. While that might be inherently more negative, it can still be enjoyable.

"His Toy Story 3 review blew my mind. I knew I hated it but he kind of showed me why," says a now-deleted Reddit user. While he addresses both beloved and critically panned movies, the panned movies tend to be the videos that draw the most love from audiences. Sometimes fans just need to know why a plot feels weak or repetitive.

Possum Reviews

The Youtube Channel of Possum Reviews

Another YouTuber who tends to focus on movies that received overwhelmingly poor receptions, Possum Reviews has grown a large fanbase by putting his attention on reviewing "garbage" movies, as his possum icon indicates. "I really love watching Possum Reviews even though his reviews of blatantly bad movies are really cynical," says Redditor Owijs .

Most of his reviews tend to be funny, which helps to keep the content engaging even when the actual film he reviews is appallingly bad. While he sometimes addresses beloved movies, it's the mediocre ones that draw the most eyes.

The Youtube Channel of Sideways

While most moviegoers don't think about soundtracks, the YouTuber Sideways goes into detail on just how the best soundtracks in movies interact with each film and create an environment. Tackling both musical and nonmusical movies, the channel does an extraordinary job of teaching fans about sound in films.

"Genuinely such interesting analysis of music in shows/movies from a very funny, intelligent guy who always sounds like he’s having the best time talking about whatever he’s talking about," states Reddit user ameboleyn . His excitement, even when addressing movies like Cats , is palpable and keeps viewers as engaged as he is.

Red Letter Media

The Youtube Channel of RedLetterMedia

A YouTube channel focused on friends reviewing movies that are both good and bad, RedLetterMedia has picked up many fans through the years, and for good reason. With the channel often known for its dry humor, Redditor TylerKnowy described it as "a mix of comedy and insight."

The channel has different shows with each addressing several topics. From Re:View 's more positive view of film to the often maligning Half in the Bag , the channel has something for everyone — as long as everyone likes their sense of humor. Of course, given that they often tackle movies that divide critics and audiences , they can be contentious.

The Youtube Channel of Film Joy

With videos ranging from 10 minutes to over an hour long, the YouTube channel FilmJoy has things for everyone to enjoy. Of course, while the channel offers several shows, most of the channel's supporters tend to find themselves more engaged by the Movies with Mikey show.

"Intelligent, funny and extremely heartfelt. His whole approach is to discuss beloved films and why they're so special," says Reddit user johnspost . Instead of focusing on cynicism and encouraging fans to dislike certain movies, it brings about positivity, which is somewhat rare among YouTubers.

This Guy Edits

The Youtube Channel of This Guy Edits

While many film critics focus on acting, character development, plot, or setting, the YouTuber This Guy Edits focuses on the editing in film and how it affects each movie. Instead of critiquing individual movies, the channel educates the public to help them consider editing in their own review of films.

"I find myself analyzing cuts and sound design way more after watching This Guy Edits," shared Reddit user InuitOverit . Considering how many movies are edited after their initial release , it's got a wide array of content to sift through, which means fans have a lot to learn from a true professional.

Lindsay Ellis

The Youtube Channel of Lindsay Ellis

A film critic who used her YouTube channel to launch a book of her own, Lindsay Ellis recently left the YouTube scene, but her remaining backlog of content is still fascinating to look through. "Her videos are really funny while also being very interesting," commented Redditor bman9919 .

Often, Ellis considered topics that most fans failed to consider and showcased just why she took that perspective. She focused on a wide array of issues, including animation, the influence of the filmmakers on each film, and even why the greatest movie musicals are no longer particularly popular.

Like Stories Of Old

The Youtube Channel of Like Stories Of Old

The YouTuber Like Stories of Old is a critic who likes to go into depth with each video, which is why it's so rare to see content for his channel under 20 minutes long. It's also why he only tends to release videos irregularly, often with a month or more between releases.

"His voice and delivery is so unique and soothing... it's pretty remarkable how well constructed each piece is," says Redditor stumpcity . The channel addresses wide-ranging issues in Hollywood, like the Hero's Journey, entire genres in film, and archetypes within the industry. He offers a fascinating in-depth look at whatever topics he chooses, and it's why he's a beloved critic.

Every Frame A Painting

The Youtube Channel of Every Frame A Painting

While there are many visually stunning movies that can awe viewers, the YouTuber Every Frame A Painting takes apart movies to show fans exactly why they come to love the looks and aesthetic of movies. It also takes a look at how to improve those very aesthetic through editing.

"They were mainly about filmmaking techniques, editing, shot composition, blocking, etc., instead of plot/story/theme like the majority seem to be," says Reddit user scoutcjustice . While unfortunately Every Frame A Painting has stopped producing videos, fans still have a lot to learn from the content the channel already produced, as the majority continues to be relevant today.

Thomas Flight

The Youtube Channel of Thomas Flight

Often addressing topics like director preferences and the impact of particular films, the YouTuber Thomas Flight could give a masterclass in film criticism, as most fans would agree. "Thomas Flight does a really good job at highlighting technical details and is also great at explaining the historical reference points for many directors," posits Reddit user redditaccount001 .

With essays about editing, genres, and sound quality in movies, fans may come for the analysis of their favorite film and leave with a new appreciation for dynamic styles in film. The channel's in-depth analysis explains why each upload comes somewhat inconsistently, but the content is quality enough that fans hardly mind.

What Is Spatial Audio and Is It Different From 3D Positional Audio?

When is the best time to upgrade your gpu here's how to know, how to unblur an image: the 5 easiest methods.

Video blogging or vlogging has made movie fan boys get up from the couch. YouTube has given them full broadcast rights for free to air their raves and rants. The joy of watching movies for free on YouTube is no longer a secret. In fact, you can catch pretty good full length movies on YouTube. Of course, you have to buy your own popcorn.

There are a lot of movie buffs on YouTube giving their two-cents worth by way of movie reviews. In fact, they have full-blown YouTube movie review channels to show-off their critical takes.

Which are the better ones out there? Just like the reviews you catch, the select ten is also taken from a list I follow. Agree or disagree, just give them a ten second glance.

youtube movie review channels

Spill.com is a cool movie site in itself. Its YouTube channel allows you to miss the words and take in what Korey is yapping about on the latest movies that have come out. Catching the animated characters reviewing movies is fun and it helps to know that there are serious critics behind the fun faces.  The pretty to look at Grace is also there with her human touch. Grace also has her own show Beyond the Trailer . As their tag line says - "If its crap...we'll tell you".

Reelz Channel

Reelz Channel is another good movie portal that has let loose Richard Roeper (American columnist and film critic) to tell you what’s the best and the worst being dished out by Hollywood. You get behind the sneak peeks, interviews, news, and reviews. Right now the channel is playing - Roeper's Best and Worst of 2011 (So Far)

Chris Stuckmann

youtube movie reviews

His resume is interesting. His Facebook page defines him as an independent filmmaker as well as film critic and Michael Jackson impersonator. So, when he is not vlogging on movies, he can always do a jig. It’s always informative to hear a filmmaker speak on movies as more often than not they are aware of the intricacies that make a film work or fail.

Jeremy Jahns

youtube movie reviews

The self-appointed ‘funniest critic in the world’ talks fast and goes through a 2 hour movie in 3 minutes or less. The humor is not over-the-top, but low key. The reviews are opinionated enough and he does a good job of even catching the trailers and constructing an entire review based on the sneak peeks.

Fury of The Film Fan

youtube movie reviews

The reviews are long and detailed. For instance, the Captain America ends at seven minutes. The channel presents independent film reviews free from bias and influence. The YouTube channel has its own rating system which goes by names of The Gold Fury Award/The Silver Fury Award/The Fury Mark of Shame.

Schmoes Know Movies

youtube reviews

A pair of snooty movie fan boys who poke fun at the movies and at themselves while reviewing movies they have watched. The refreshing thing is that they aren’t film critics but two regular guys telling it how they saw it. Their take is absolutely in your face.

Flick It Before You Pick It

youtube reviews

Jonathan hardly smiles when he is delivering his flick picks. This channel belongs to another self-confessed ‘movie cowboy’. He does the whole hog – parodies, raves ‘n’ rants, DVD/Blu-ray collection updates, trailer reviews, top movie recommendations, impersonations etc.

Gab and Dad

youtube reviews

Moving away from teens and twenty something film buffs, we come to a family team. In their own words - they review the latest releases, with unique dual-generation dynamics. There’s Phillip the dad, Gabrielle the daughter and mom to Max who also chips in. It’s not as if they agree on all points, but their discussion tells you a lot about what to watch and what to miss.

TomSPerkins (FilmXTRA)

top movie reviewers on youtube

If you go to the website and the YouTube channel, you will perhaps feel that this 23 year old guy is doing a good job of running both outlets single handedly. He uses a five-star rating system to gauge his (and others) interest in a movie. Somehow, if you are in the same age group, it works out quite well.

The Rough Cuts

youtube movie review channels

As a YouTube movie review channel, this one is a bit different as it uses the collective wisdom of seven ‘YouTubers’ to talk about the movies. Each of them gets a day to talk and discuss movies. So, at the end of the week you get seven different views for the free price of one channel. Some are good and some are not very informative. The choice of movies is also very selective and is not always mainstream.

There are a whole lot of web apps that are trying to save you the price of a ticket; from Twitter to dedicated movie sites . Throw YouTube into the mix along with the other ways to read about movie reviews .

Do you go to YouTube for movie reviews? Which is your favorite YouTube channel on movies and films?

8 must follow movie reviewers on YouTube

top movie reviewers on youtube

Movies are delightful. Depending on your inclination, Hollywood or Bollywood, they keep us engrossed in the on screen proceedings, that may or may not leave us impressed at times. Although, there may be more people like us who enjoy movie reviewers more than the actual movie.

Watching someone break down our favourite and not so favourite movies into wholesome doses of fun by individuals who go through the ordeal of watching these movies beforehand - bliss we'd say.

We compiled a list of 8 of the funniest and most entertaining movie reviewers that inhabit YouTube and keep us entertained with their shenanigans.

Pretentious Movie Reviews

Kanan Gill and Biswa Kalyan Rath are the dynamic duo behind Pretentious Movie Reviews, although there is nothing pretentious about it. They review the most mind numbing and cliched Bollywood movies from the past and are an absolute riot.

Pretentious Movie Reviews talk about Fardeen Khan’s debut movie Prem Aggan in this video, and we highly recommend you watch it alone, because you will struggle to contain your laughter.

Jeremy Jahns

A high energy, coat clad movie reviewer, he has more than a million followers on his YouTube channel. He is one of the well known content creators on YouTube, and has since branched out from movies to games and other media.

Jeremy reviews one of the most anticipated movies that released this year, Dawn of Justice : Batman V Superman. If you’re a comic book or superhero genre buff, you have got to watch the review. Spoiler Alert though.

Chris Stuckmann

Here, Chris Stuckmann reviews Nicolas Cage’s The Wicker Man, a movie that has been rumored to make people walk out of an airplane. Yeah that bad.

The Review Jockey

Sanil claims to offer nothing but the truth in his movie reviews, and with his channel The Review Jockey, he regularly offers his opinion and his prediction regarding fresh Bollywood movies.

Sanil reviews what we already know is a bad movie, but nevertheless, it’s fun to watch someone rip it to shreds.

Yes, we know! But he is a movie reviewer after all. Self proclaimed number one Bollywood critic, KRK is pretty active not just on YouTube but also on other social media platforms and his opinions stretch out to current events too.

His social media spat with Ajay Devgn is pretty well known by now and here he is, yet again rubbing Mr. Devgn the wrong way.

Sikander Sidhu and Pulkit Kochar manage the channel Hollyshit has more than 250k subscribers, and their movie reviews are a mix of old and new, but disappointing movies nevertheless. The movies they pick to review are hilarious even before they actually say a word about it, but they add their own twist with clever editing and one liners.

Hollyshit’s review for Gunda is one of the most popular and funniest videos on their channel.

Schmoesknow

If you’re someone who loses their mind nuggets when you watch a movie with revolutionary CGI, some slick special effects and the cherry on top, if it’s a superhero movie! That is exactly what Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis’ Schmoesknow dispenses, which is not overtly funny, but an instant rush for a geek like, well me.

Here Schmoesknow decode the most recent blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange.

The FLICK Pick

John Flickinger does movie reviews, top 10 lists, trailer reactions, explanations and you know pretty much everything that has to do anything with movies. He has 225k subscribers on his YouTube channel, theFLICKpick.

John Flickster freaks out like most of us would, as he reviews the Blair Witch movie.

What are your favorite Movie Reviewers on Youtube?

Who's that one person you just have to watch a review on a newest release, or a favorite movie you have?

I mainly watch Chris Stuckmann, randomly ran across him on YT a year ago and haven't really looked for others to watch. I find myself agreeing with a lot of his view points and opinions but can see that fandom potentially hurting my own views on a movie.

What are some other good reviewers I could watch that might offer a different perspective and opinion, that you would recommend?

‘alien: romulus’ scares up $41.5 million to top box office charts.

“ Alien: Romulus ,” the latest installment in the 45-year-old franchise, opened in first place at the North American box office.

The 20th Century Studios release earned an estimated $41.5 million in its first weekend, where it was playing in 3,885 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Including $66.7 million from international showings in 49 markets, “Alien: Romulus” boasted a $108.2 million global debut.

The Walt Disney Co., which owns 20th Century Studios, claimed the top two spots on the charts, with Marvel’s “ Deadpool & Wolverine ” now in its fourth weekend, taking second place with $29 million. The company has been responsible for an estimated 42% of the industry’s summer box office haul, including hits “Inside Out 2” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”

 a scene from "Alien: Romulus."

August can often be slow for the movie business, or, less charitably, a dumping ground. But while 2024 has lagged overall for the movie business, a string of recent hits including “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “ It Ends With Us ” helped build a momentum that put this late August weekend over 30% ahead of the same weekend last year. It’s also up over 10% from August 2019.

“The summer started off pretty gloomy, but it’s winding up really strong,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. “We thought we were going to coast through August, but now we’re powering through August towards a much better overall summer number than we expected for the box office.”

Fede Álvarez directed “Alien: Romulus, ” set around the time of “Alien” and “Aliens,” and recruited a cast of up-and-coming 20-somethings to lead the cast including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson and Isabela Merced. The sci-fi film leans into Álvarez’s propensity for all things horror, as he is known for “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe,” and embraces the franchise’s horror roots.

Reviews have been a little mixed, but mostly positive, with an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore.

The romantic drama “ It Ends With Us ” landed in third place with $24 million, down just 52% from its triumphant opening.

The Sony movie starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, who also directed, has made $97.8 million to date. It cost only $25 million to produce.

The film was adapted from the bestselling Colleen Hoover novel of the same name that follows Lively as Lily Bloom, a woman at a crossroads when a past love upends her current relationship with Baldoni’s Ryle Kincaid.

Rumors of behind-the-scenes drama on the film also continues to dominate social media discourse and tabloid headlines — but “Don’t Worry Darling” also taught us that gossip and chatter don’t always translate to box office returns.

“Twisters” placed fourth in its fifth weekend with $9.8 million from 3,483 theaters. The Universal release has made over $238.4 million domestically.

Rounding out the top five was a re-release: “Coraline,” which Fathom Events put on over 1,500 screens for its 15th anniversary where it made $11.3 million in four days and $8.6 million from Friday through Sunday.

Tony Chambers, Senior Vice President at The Walt Disney Company, speaking onstage at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas, in front of 'Alien: Romulus' title.

The stop-motion animated film was an adaptation of a Neil Gaiman novella, written and directed by Henry Selick and marked the first-ever release for Laika. It’ll be in theaters until Aug. 22.

“Borderlands,” the video game adaptation starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis, brought in $2.4 million in its second weekend bringing its total box office earnings to $13.5 million compared to its reported $120 million budget.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Alien: Romulus,” $41.5 million.

2. “Deadpool & Wolverine,” $29 million.

3. “It Ends With Us,” $24 million.

4. “Twisters,” $9.8 million.

5. “Coraline,” $8.6 million.

6. “Despicable Me 4,” $6 million.

7. “Trap,” $3.4 million.

8. “Inside Out 2,” $3.2 million.

9. “Borderlands,” $2.4 million.

10. “Stree 2,” $2.2 million.

Top 10 Best YouTube Movie Critics

top movie reviewers on youtube

It was a hard choice between Nostalgia Critic and Chris Stuckmann. I think I made the right choice. I watch Nostalgia Critic because he makes me laugh. That's it. I watch Chris because he makes really good points and he makes pretty good jokes a lot. Also, his "Toy Story 4" review made me watch it, and I absolutely loved it. I was amazed at that movie. Thanks, Chris.

He's my favorite movie reviewer on YouTube. Not only does he have well-written videos, but he also has charisma. While Jeremy Jahns and Nostalgia Critic are funny, both of them are either too fast-paced or come off too unappealing for my tastes. Chris is in-depth and has awesome humor. I also like his Hilariocity (hilarious atrocity movies) reviews. They are so detailed, funny, and rewatchable. Chris Stuckmann is my favorite movie reviewer and YouTuber.

top movie reviewers on youtube

He's charismatic but also gives biased opinions. He usually gives too good reviews to otherwise mediocre movies, so it's hard to take his opinion into consideration, really.

His impressions of people in films are just... gold!

top movie reviewers on youtube

Great critic! He gives good reviews and he's pretty damn funny too!

Love watching this guy! Especially his Last Airbender review!

I like Jeremy Jahns, Chris Stuckmann is okay, but I think Nostalgia Critic should definitely be number one.

This guy has so much charisma. He seems like such a likable guy.

Watch his 'Top 10 Most Epic Movies' video - his 'epic trailer voice' is just golden.

top movie reviewers on youtube

Deserves a place in the top 10. Puts a lot of hard work into his reviews.

He deserves to be above Nostalgia Critic.

top movie reviewers on youtube

One of the few reviewers looking for craft.

top movie reviewers on youtube

CinemaSins should be way higher! They show no bias and you're guaranteed to laugh at least once!

I personally don't see them as critics. Just expert nitpickers from what I've seen.

top movie reviewers on youtube

How is this guy not higher on the list? Most of his reviews are evenly balanced (key word is MOST), and he ends all of his videos being very cheerful and happy.

Recently, Screen Junkies News has upped their game. They're focusing more on the mechanics behind Hollywood, a bit political economy-ish at times. As a weekly news source, I'd say they're my favorite. Better and more intelligent dialogue than most panel-based YouTube shows. And not so serious that they're not enjoyable to hang out with.

He's a great critic, and his rants are hilarious!

Why does no one know about him? He is bae!

top movie reviewers on youtube

Not entirely a movie critic, but when he makes his good-length, 20-minute-long reviews are great! He focuses on TERRIBLE films and goes into depth about WHY they're bad. New to the channel? Go see his review of Birdemic or Cool Cat Saves the Kids. (That name sounds bad)

Childhood classic. Can't beat Search for the Worst. Everyone wants a show that's influential.

He deserves more subscribers than he has. This guy is an amazing reviewer on YouTube!

This guy is a beast. He makes the greatest videos on the internet.

Super informative and one of the best out there.

Should be top 5 at least. He's so funny!

Susan Wojcicki, a Pivotal Chief of YouTube, Dies at 56

She helped turn Google into an internet juggernaut and became one of the most prominent women in Silicon Valley.

A woman in a leather jacket and white T-shirt sits against a dark background.

By John Yoon and Mike Isaac

Susan Wojcicki , who helped turn Google from a start-up in her garage into an internet juggernaut, and who became one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent female executives with her leadership of YouTube, died on Friday. She was 56.

Her death was confirmed by her husband, Dennis Troper, who wrote on Facebook that she had been living with lung cancer for two years. He did not say where she died.

Ms. Wojcicki’s more than two decades with Google began in 1998 in her house in Menlo Park, Calif., part of which she rented to her friends Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company’s founders. For $1,700 a month, the two used the garage as their office to build the search engine.

Ms. Wojcicki, who had been working at Intel, soon joined Google as one of its earliest employees and was its first marketing manager. Over the years, she reached its executive ranks, becoming Google’s most senior woman employee. She eventually led YouTube, which Google acquired in 2006, and which became one of the world’s largest social media companies.

“She is as core to the history of Google as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, said in a statement .

When she became YouTube’s chief executive in 2014, Ms. Wojcicki was hailed as the most powerful woman in advertising. She had made Google enormously profitable, and she was expected to repeat the trick at YouTube. She led Google’s ad business and played a key role in its acquisition of DoubleClick , an advertising technology company, in 2007.

11 best free movies on YouTube

There's some serious quality in the best free movies on YouTube

Dillon Freasier as H. W. Plainview Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview in a conversation with someone else in There Will Be Blood

You will be shocked by the best free movies on YouTube . We were. After doing the research for this article, we at Tom's Guide were surprised by two things. First and foremost: YouTube has free movies beyond just the clips people upload and channels post. We're talking legit films that we all paid money to go see in theaters.

Our list of the best free movies on YouTube includes one of Tom Cruise's best films of all time, an under-appreciated thriller featuring John Goodman and one of the Coen Brothers' best films. So, what's the catch, I can hear you ask.

If you watch these free movies on YouTube, you'll have to sit through ads. Or at least you would if you don't have YouTube Premium , which erases ads from all YouTube videos. Oh, and some of them aren't streaming in HD, either. But that's not exactly surprising when YouTube is also a site that sells movie rentals and purchases.

So, without further ado, here are our picks for the best free movies on YouTube.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle, pressed against a door, while John Goodman as Howard Stambler looks through its window in 10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield Lane

Cloverfield is a name that has a lot of connotations in movies these days, after the woefully received 2008 movie of the same name. But 10 Cloverfield Lane is a must-see no matter if you saw Cloverfield or not. A "bottle episode" of a movie, it takes place nearly entirely in a bunker where Howard (Goodman) has been keeping Michelle (Winstead) after he found her post-car crash. Howard doesn't seem entirely trustworthy (and he's more than a little creepy), so Michelle doesn't know if she should believe him that the outside world has been destroyed by a chemical attack. Tension ramps up as Michelle learns more and more about Howard.

Dillon Freasier as H. W. Plainview and Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview in a conversation with someone else in There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood

Researching this story gave me plenty of surprises, not the least of which including the reveal that the fantastic award-winning There Will Be Blood is actually free on YouTube. Another fantastic Daniel Day-Lewis performance — this time as miner Daniel Plainview — anchors this amazing film about how money corrupts man. Yes, that description, and the story of how oil ruins everything it touches, isn't exactly new. That said, There Will Be Blood thrives off of amazing work from all involved, including co-star Paul Dano, director Paul Thomas Anderson and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, whose original orchestral score ties the whole thing together.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91% (Certified Fresh) Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Kevin J. O'Connor, Ciarán Hinds, Dillon Freasier Director: Paul Thomas Anderson Watch it for free on YouTube

John Turturro as Pete, Tim Blake Nelson as Delmar and George Clooney as Ulysses stare into the distance in O Brother, Where Art Thou?

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Another surprising gem to find in this list, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is one of the Coen Brothers' best films. Also beloved for its folk music soundtrack, O Brother, Where Art Thou? transports audiences back to Mississippi in 1937 — but it's actually referencing even older lore. Co-written by Ethan and Joel Coen, O Brother uses three escaped convicts — Pete (Turturro), Delmar (Blake Nelson) and Ulysses Everett McGill (Clooney) — to riff on Homer's epic Greek poem The Odyssey. The trio are hunting for treasure, and wind up on a series of farcical adventures. A master-class of filmmaking in many ways.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 78% Stars: George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, John Gootman, Holly Hunter Director: Joel Coen Watch it for free on YouTube

Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy in Wargames

Global Thermonuclear War sounds like a fun retro computer game, right? Well, that's basically what David Lightman (Broderick) thought. In actually, the high schooler had hacked into a military supercomputer, and set the country into the start of an actual war with the Soviet union. How is that possible? Lightman's accidentally interacted with the WOPR, a NORAD supercomputer that is running simulations of war. The endgame for these wargames comes through trying to convince the AI behind WOPR about the reasons to not go to war. A great mix of teen drama and thrilling adventure, Wargames is one of the best free movies on YouTube.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 93% (Certified Fresh) Stars: Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Ally Sheedy, John Wood Director: David Fincher Watch it for free on YouTube

Clint Eastwood as Blondie (the Man with No Name), holding a gun in the air in a still from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Perhaps the spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is more proof that the best free movies on YouTube include inarguable classics. Clint Eastwood stars as a bounty hunter called Blondie who has to work with two fellow lowlifes — Tuco (Eli Wallach) and Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) — to find buried gold. Betrayal, murder and bullets all pour in the subsequent scenes. Ennio Morricone provides a fantastic score, filled with songs that will get stuck in your head.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% (Certified Fresh) Stars: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef Director: Sergio Leone Watch it for free on YouTube

Julie Hagerty as Elaine Dickinson and Robert Hays as Ted Striker in a cockpit with the inflatable autopilot

There are movies that use comedy as punchlines, with gaps in between riffs. And then there's Airplane!, a film that is constantly trying to make you laugh, and likely make the cast crack up, too. It all revolves around a whole plane's crew and passengers who are struck with food poisoning. Hilarious if you lived through the spate of disaster films released right before Airplane! came out in 1980, but still funny if you love a good punchline.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% (Certified Fresh) Stars: Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Peter Graves, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, Leslie Nielsen Directors: Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker Watch it for free on YouTube

Tom Cruise as John Anderton, kneeling on a ledge in Minority Report

Minority Report

Again, our search for the best free movies on YouTube let us hit another gem with one of Tom Cruise's top movies: Minority Report. An adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novella of the same name, the film revolves around the concept of precrime: the "art" of using a trio of psychics to figure out and stop crime before it's even committed. The inherent issues of the system, judging someone for something they haven't done, are brought to light when Chief Paul Anderton (Cruise) is accused of murdering a man he's never met. He then dives into the system to reveal how (or if) he's been framed.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90% (Certified Fresh) Stars: Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Max von Sydow, Lois Smith, Peter Stormare Director: Steven Spielberg Watch it for free on YouTube

Claire Danes as Juliet and Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo kiss in Romeo + Juliet

Romeo + Juliet

Director Baz Luhrman's color-soaked and emotional adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy came out at just the right time. Dropped right during Leonardo DiCaprio's ascendance to be the king of the teen heart-throbs, this version of Romeo & Juliet seems ripped from MTV with its look. Claire Danes, as Juliet, is a perfect match for this Romeo, and their chemistry made this movie feel like the ideal setup for Titanic, the following year's mega-blockbuster. It doesn't hurt that DiCaprio is surrounded by a team of all-stars working their best magic, including an excellent performances from John Leguizamo as Tybalt.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 73% Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Paul Rudd, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrinau Director: Baz Luhrmann Watch it for free on YouTube

The cast of But I'm a Cheerleader, in cleaning clothing, including Clea Duvall, Melanie Lynskey and Natasha Lyonne

But I'm a Cheerleader

A nice and light satirical comedy, But I'm a Cheerleader gives us one of the few starring roles in Natasha Lyonne's early career — well before Russian Doll reminded everyone that she was severely underrated. The film is focused on Megan (Lyonne), who thinks she's a normal high school girl, or at least she did before her panicked parents declare her to be gay and send her to a True Directions, a boot camp meant to force her back into heterosexuality. And, of course, her visit to True Directions leads to Megan questioning her heterosexuality.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 41% Stars: Natasha Lyonne, Clea Duvall, RuPaul, Cathy Moriarty, Bud Cort, Mink Stole Director: Jamie Babbit Watch it for free on YouTube

George Wyner (As Colonel Sandurz), Rick Moranis (as Dark Helmet) and Mel Brooks as President Skroob) looking up in fear in Spaceballs

Spaceballs, a low-fi Star Wars parody, may not leave you saying "may the Schwartz be with you," but you may remember it for making sure the farce is with you. With characters such as Yogurt, Pizza The Hutt and Lord Dark Helmet, Spaceballs is a movie for people who don't believe in subtlety. Not every joke may hit, but the ratio is strong enough to make this a memorable movie that many nerds of a certain vintage will love to put on, but probably don't know it's one of the best free movies on YouTube.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 56% Stars: Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga Director: Mel Brooks Watch it for free on YouTube

A close of Arnold Schwarzenegger in black and white

Pumping Iron

If you thought Arnold Schwarzenegger was a weird adult, you should see young Arnie in this documentary shot during his days as a young body-builder. Through a series of interviews with Schwarzenegger in the days before the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia competitions (and during said events), the film shows a side of the megastar you've probably never seen. Surrounded by his fellow bodybuilders, Schwarzenegger constantly says the unexpected, and you get a glimpse of how he became so popular — as it was all happening.

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91 Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Roger Callard, Franco Columbu Directors: George Butler, Robert Fiore Watch it for free on YouTube

The Instigators review: Matt Damon and Casey Affleck pair up in the latest movie made for your dad

By Jamie Tram

ABC Entertainment

Topic: Film (Arts and Entertainment)

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck sit in the front two seats of a car.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have paired up for the latest dad movie. ( Supplied: Apple TV+ )

For a streaming service associated with the bleeding edge of tech, Apple TV+ has grown surprisingly nostalgic in its curation.

Much of its recent slate feels like a throwback to the 90s heyday of mid-budget cinema, encompassing a booze-soaked postmodern noir (Sugar), a legal thriller based on an 80s paperback (Presumed Innocent), and the latest releases from Ridley Scott ( Napoleon ) and Martin Scorsese ( Killers of the Flower Moon ).

In short: Apple TV+ now specialises in content for your dad.

With its heist-gone-wrong premise and a feast of meaty character actors, The Instigators is the streamer's latest bid at reverse-engineering the kind of late-night TV movie best enjoyed in one's favourite armchair with a beer in hand.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck return to their Boston roots as Rory and Cobby, two fumbling, good-natured crooks roped into a high-stakes election night heist. Neither character exists beyond their broad strokes; Rory's ex-marine and absent father needs a payout to make things up to his kid, while Cobby's an alcoholic criminal on parole with a self-destructive streak. At least both leads appreciably inject a sagging, mid-life misery into their thinly sketched characters.

The job itself – a swift retrieval of cash from a poorly-guarded safe – could hardly be more simple, yet manages to get bungled at every turn. Throw in an aggressive idiot with a gun (a surprise turn by Jack Harlow, Gen Z's premier white boy rapper), a crooked mayor (played by Ron Perlman in a red tie) with secrets stashed away, and the two low-level criminals quickly find themselves stumbling into a city-wide manhunt.

Jack Harlow sits on a couch surrounded by three men.

The film quickly blitzes through this set-up, as if it's terrified you'll start scrolling on your phone. Characters and motivations are introduced with the passionless efficacy of a roll call, squandering the joys of spending time with a top-shelf supporting cast that includes Michael Stuhlbarg and Alfred Molina as the masterminds of the operation. Ving Rhames' fedora-wearing special agent is introduced as a mysterious figure emerging from the shadows, the film lightly insinuating that Luther has been air-dropped in from Mission: Impossible.

The Instigators eventually finds its footing as a frothy chase movie. With both sides of the law closing in, as well as the ticking timer of a gunshot wound, Rory has nowhere to turn but the office of his therapist Donna (Hong Chau; The Whale ). Chau dials back the sinister overtones of recent performances (including last month's Kinds of Kindness ), but preserves her placid, not-quite-deadpan intonation – an essential counterbalance to the incessant bickering between the leads.

Matt Damon and Hong Chau talk next to a yellow car.

Therapist Donna serves as a counterbalance to bickering lead characters. ( Supplied: Apple TV+ )

In a film stuffed with bozos, Donna's intelligence becomes a running joke. The biggest laughs come from her transition from lawful neutral to chaotic good, whether she's negotiating her own hostage situation or playing rock-paper-scissors with competing factions of criminals and enforcers.

The screenplay (by Affleck and Chuck Maclean) may be funny enough to buoy its bog-standard crime drama, but the surrounding film is too hastily stitched together to generate any kind of momentum. Dialogue scenes are regularly marred by wonky shot compositions and stammered editing; the few action beats are barely more exciting, even when a horde of police cars bear down on Rory and Cobby. Curiously absent is the slick kineticism that director Doug Liman flexed several months ago in his Road House remake.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck wear worksuits and beanies in this heist scene.

The film is too hastily stitched together to generate any kind of momentum. ( Supplied: Apple TV+ )

Between The Instigators and the upcoming Wolves, which stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt, Apple TV+ seems to be specifically heisting the cast of Ocean's Eleven.

But the intervening decades have undeniably eroded the Ocean's gang's lustre. Damon still occupies a niche in prestige dramas, but no longer retains the thrilling versatility that saw him morph into Will Hunting, Private Ryan, Tom Ripley and Jason Bourne. Few people can name a George Clooney movie from the last decade. Casey Affleck and Brad Pitt have enjoyed recent Oscar wins, but face troubling allegations .

Even at a breezy 100 minutes, The Instigators can't outrun the march of time; the dad movie is in desperate need of a fresh start.

The Instigators is streaming on Apple TV+ now.
