ఎవరిది తప్పు…

‘Witness’ movie review: Shraddha Srinath, Rohini in a powerful anti-caste film that doesn’t pull any punches

Through powerful storytelling, debutant director deepak’s film raises important questions and shows the sheer savagery that we, the collective society, are ‘witness’ to.

It’s always been easy to turn a blind eye to the social evils around us and to live in an imagined reality. When you are not the victim, it is easy to shrug your shoulders and blame this overpowering system that crushes those who don’t have the privilege to shruff it off. Debutant director Deepak’s Witness doesn’t give you a false sense of victory against these evils; it isn’t meant to prick you and plead with you to look. Witness throws at you a big, thick book with ‘LOOK’ in bold letters, and asks how ridiculous it is that we are now accustomed to looking at some of these social evils, like manual scavenging, as just another news topic.

Witness tells the story of how a middle-aged single mother Indrani (Rohini), who loses her college-going son Parthiban (Thamizharasan) to forced manual scavenging, chooses to fight back and not be silenced by the ones responsible for his death. Though she is up against a host of powerful people — from the owners of the apartment to the contractor, the sub-contractors, and some corrupt cops — she finds hope and support from a few guardian angels who find their way into her life. One among them is Petharaj (Selva C), a communist union leader, who first figures out the ploy behind Parthiban’s death and supports Indrani in her legal battle. Shraddha Srinath plays a free-spirited, sharp-tongued young woman, Parvathy, who lives in the apartment in which Parthiban died. She defies her neighbours and helps the late Parthiban find justice. A lawyer named Sivaprakasam (a fantastic Shanmugarajan) takes Indrani’s case and spits fire at the courthouse.

Witness (Tamil)

From the structure of the screenplay, Witnes s seems like a whodunit in the form of a legal drama, but it works more as a social drama. The film doesn’t wait anywhere to establish the socio-political angles that are fundamentally at play in any case of manual scavenging in India. People, like the pivotal landlord character (Srinath), have always been guilty of exploiting the state of the oppressed without having to be accountable. Through the casteist undertones in dialogues, the slang of Tamil spoken by each character, and the mentality exhibited towards people from certain localities and social classes, the film maps out who is the oppressor and who is oppressed.

Minutes into the story, you begin to notice a few cinematic liberties, and how there is a lot of convenience in the progression of events — for instance, Parvathy not only happens to be living at the same apartment in which the tragedy occurred, she is also Parthi’s swimming classmate and she is also the one who gets pivotal incriminating evidence. However, these liberties don’t dent the experience of watching Witness even a bit.

This is because there’s a clear signal that this isn’t a film that is meant to up the suspense or shock you with twists and turns. Through a straightforward story, it shows the sheer savagery that we, the collective society, are ‘witness’ to. Narratively, it has minimum struggle and maximum heart, and it never pulls its punches. The entire film is a series of quick, powerful jabs that raise many thought-provoking questions. Yes, it is message-y, and yes, it isn’t subtle. But that seems to be the whole point of the film; to make it as real as it can get, and to raise questions that are as real as they can be. To add to its credit, the film also doesn’t milk emotions out of you with a sudden tragedy — because everything that happens in the film is a tragedy on its own. There aren’t any melodramatic scenes of Parthiban that undermines the emotional intelligence of the audience; notice how the film uses a beautifully penned and composed song (‘Paravayaai Naam Parakkirom’) to tell so much about Parthiban, the love for his mother and the ideals he fights for.

Through a fantastic subplot for Shraddha Srinath and Rohini — both of them are excellent in the film — we also see how this system made by men tends to affect women more, and how some decisions of men, in a personal and professional capacity, create a long-lasting impact on the women.

Witness makes you point at yourself quite a lot. For instance, every time we come across a sloganeer/revolutionist/protester like Petharaj, it is easy to dismiss our involvement in their cause by blaming the hopelessness of such protests. But notice how the case of Parthiban would have been just one of the fifteen deaths that year had Petharaj not intervenedThe film does tell you the repercussions that come out of the set structures that this caste-obsessed and exploitative society has built for generations. It tells you that you are not always fighting to win, but you are also fighting to fight, to be allowed to raise your voice.

If you think all this will never concern you, think about this: Have you ever thought of what you would do if your landlord employs another human to clean your septic tank? Would you risk your comfortable stay at your home by antagonising your landlord? Or would you choose to be like Indrani or Parvathy, and start cleaning the rut? Witness may not be a film made with finesse, but it manages to point fingers at everyone, especially the witnesses.

'Witness' movie review: An impactful, Multi-layered social commentary

Debutant Deepak’s Witness is a daring film for a lot of reasons. It takes manual scavenging, a rarely-discussed social issue, as its core and questions everyone in the system who are both passively and actively enabling it. In an equally daring move, the promos of the film almost gave out the entire story, including the ending.

This could have been a disastrous step for any film, but Deepak manages to use it as a tool to draw the focus of the audience towards the life of its characters, without letting us worry much about the course of the rather conventional plot. Witness is the story of an underprivileged mother’s (Rohini as Indrani) fight for justice following the death of her 20-year-old son Parthiban, who was forced into manual scavenging. Despite knowing that she is fighting an impossible battle, we root for her and the film, because of the unique writing and execution.

For starters, Deepak makes us develop a strong liking for Parthiban. Be it his ever-smiling face or the warm conversations he has with his mother, everything about this person is endearing. When such a noble soul is lost, it is natural for us to feel affected. Then we are introduced to the comrades supporting Indrani and the powers that be who forced Parthiban down the death pit. We also have the common link, Parvathy (Shraddha Srinath), who is a conscientious inhabitant of the apartment where Parthiban’s life was lost.

Fascinatingly, the screenplay, written by Muthuvel, provides every main character a challenge, a want, and an arc, which complements the main narrative. The writing ensures that their paths cross each other giving rise to engaging sequences. For instance, comrade Prithviraj (an effective G Selva) and the good-natured lawyer (Shanmuga Rajan) see every positive court hearing as a trophy and celebrate the win, even as a traumatised Indrani walks out of the court not wanting to hear the details of her son’s death. All these minute details aren’t served as expositions but are established through the adept filmmaking of Deepak, who also shot the film.

Witness will be long remembered for the kind of conversations the women have in the film. Out of the several exchanges between Parvathy and Indrani, one scene that stands out is their discussion about each other’s mental health. I believe scenes like this are a good start for the betterment of the writing of female characters and mental issues. It is also impressive how every character in Witness is extremely grounded. For instance, when Parvathy informs Indrani about the CCTV footage of Parthiban’s death, Indrani fails to process it as a piece of evidence and instinctively wishes to see it as it has her son’s face. In another court hearing, the lawyer mentions the cruelty Parthiban went through, a borderline guilt-stricken Parvathy keeps nodding her head in approval in the background. Nifty touches by Deepak ensure that we are completely invested in the hard-hitting story.

When Indrani looks longingly at the place where she used to live happily in the past, and says, “Inga ellam apo sandhoshama irundhom, ipo vazhkaiyum odudhu naanum odren!” It is a punch to the gut. It is really heartening to see a consummate performer like Rohini finally get to play a full-fledged lead after ages. Shraddha, on the other hand, beautifully pulls off an intricate performance as Parvathy, who is forced to put up a brave face every single day even while longing for affection within. It is not easy to look overwhelmed and enervated for the majority of the film and yet keep the audience invested. But Sharadhha does it effectively throughout.

Though people may have divided opinions on the climax and the execution, I felt it was shot in a very innovative way. It leaves a strong reminder that all of us will be reduced to mere witnesses of injustice unless we join forces as a society.

సొసైటీలో ఇప్పటికీ ఎందరో పారిశుద్ధ్య కార్మికులు సరైన పరికరాలు లేక కాంట్రాక్టర్ల నిర్లక్ష్యానికి దోపిడికి గురై చనిపోతున్నారు. వారి జీవితాలకు ఎలాంటి భరోసా లేదు. ఇదే విషయాన్ని దర్శకుడు దీపక్ తెరకెక్కించారు. ఈ తరహా కథాంశాన్ని సినిమాగా తీయటానికి పూనుకున్న నిర్మాతలను అభినందించాలి. ఇక ప్రధాన పాత్రలో రోహిణి వంటి ప్రతిభావంతురాలైన నటిని ఎంపిక చేసుకోవడం కలసి వచ్చింది. నిజానికి ఇలాంటి పాత్రలు ఆమెకు కొట్టినిండి. మరో కీలక పాత్రలో శ్రద్ధా శ్రీనాథ్‌ కూడా పరిణతితో కూడిన నటనను ప్రదర్శించింది. ఇతర పాత్రలలో తమిళ నటీనటులు కనిపించారు. వారు తమ పాత్రలను తగిన న్యాయం చేశారు.

నిజానికి సినిమా ప్రారంభమైన కొద్ది సేపటికే రోహిణి కొడుకు చనిపోయాడని తెలుస్తుంది. ఆ తర్వాత కూడా నేరుగా కథాంశంలోకి వెళ్ళకుండా దర్శకుడు సాగతీత ధోరణిని ప్రదర్శించాడు. నిజం చెప్పాలంటే సినిమా కాకుండా ఓ డాక్యుమెంటరీ చూస్తున్న ఫీల్ కలుగుతుంది. కోర్ట్‌ డ్రామా నుంచే కొంచెం ఆసక్తికరంగా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ తరహా సినిమాలకు సాంకేతిక అంశాలతో అంతగా పని ఉండదు. ఎందుకంటే ఆద్యంతం సహజత్వానికి దగ్గరగా ఉంటుంది కాబట్టి. ప్రభుత్వ అధికారులకు ఎదురుతిరిగిన పారిశుద్ధ్య కార్మికులకు ఏం జరుగుతుందనేది ఈ సినిమా ద్వారా కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్లు తీసినా ఎక్కడో మెలోడ్రామా మిస్ అయింది అనిపిస్తుంది. కథతో పాటు మనం ట్రావెల్ అవలేకపోతాం. అదే ఈ సినిమాకు అతి పెద్ద మైనస్ పాయింట్. సినిమా నేపథ్యం కానీ, నటీనటుల నటనను కానీ తక్కువ చేయలేం. అలాగని సమస్యను సమర్ధవంతంగా తెరకెక్కించగలిగారనీ చెప్పలేం. పీపుల్స్ మీడియా లాంటి సంస్థను చేతిలో పెట్టుకుని కూడా ఇలా సినిమా మొత్తం చీప్ గా చుట్టేసినట్లు అనిపిస్తుందంటే అది దర్శకుడి తప్పిదమే అవుతుంది. ఏది ఏమైనా ఓ మంచి ప్రయత్నం అని మాత్రం చెప్పవచ్చు.

Witness, On SonyLIV, Is A Compelling Social Drama Powered By Great Storytelling

Debutant Deepak’s Witness opens with a quote from Dr BR Amedkar that hints at what the film sets out to convey. “In India, a man is not a scavenger because of his work. He is a scavenger because of his birth irrespective of the question of whether he does scavenging or not.”

This is reiterated several times in the film. The first of it is when Parthiban (Tamilarasan), a final-year college student and a swimmer, is forced to clean the sewage of an apartment for not paying back a loan. But he inhales poisonous gases while cleaning and dies. Witness aims to explain the horrors of manual scavenging and in its pursuit, could have easily taken the tone of a documentary ( Kakkoos is a great documentary on the subject if you’re ever looking for one). But its taut screenplay comes in handy. Deepak’s storytelling is at its best from the start. Take the introduction scenes of Parthiban for example. His respect for his mother is conveyed with a small yet effective scene — once he wakes up early in the morning, he calmly moves around the house without disturbing her sleep. His infectious smile just instantly clicks with you, and you are invested in his story within a couple of scenes. 

There are three other important characters in the film. Parthiban’s mother Indrani (Rohini), a corporation worker who sweeps the roads. Petharaj (G Selva), a communist union leader who fights for the rights of people, and Parvathy (Shraddha Srinath), an architect, who is also Parthiban’s friend and neighbour. Petharaj helps Indrani file a court case against the apartment secretary, members, and sewage cleaning contractors, and the film traces the journey of the trio to seek justice. 

It gives equal importance to different characters and seamlessly weaves in their stories together. And as a result, we do not get a story just about manual scavenging, but also witness stories of privatisation in cleaning projects, the exploitation of corporation workers, and the prevalance of caste oppression despite economic status. It is in the effort that Witness takes to not just depict the issue in a one dimensional way, but get into the lives of these individuals and their everyday problems, that the film shines. 

Coming back to the Ambedkar quote, the seriousness of the issue is often stressed through dialogues later on in the film. This first happens when an old man tells the police officer about the different youngsters who have died over the past few years, with the last one being Parthiban. He says, “All these people belong to our community, and till date, not one person from a different community has died of cleaning shit and sewage.” Similarly, Petharaj is questioned by a writer about how he can divide people based on caste when he is fighting against oppression. He says, “Who decided that Parthiban should be only cleaning the sewage to repay the debt? Just look at the caste of the people the corporation recruits for this kind of work, and then you will know who oppresses whom.”

Witness also uses dialogues to depict relatively finer details in the film that shows the biases that exist in communities, and adds to the realistic approach . Sample this. When Parvathy visits Parthiban’s slum, a police officer warns her, “Paatha indha area maari theriyalaye, ivangellam romba dangerous, criminal activities neraya nadakura edam idhu.” (You do not look like you belong to this area, these people are very dangerous and a lot of criminal activities happen here). 

Manual scavenging is banned in India. But 340 people have died cleaning the sewers in the last five years, the film tells us. But why has no one been convicted? The answer on paper is a little complicated, but the film simplifies it. For instance, when the head of operations and maintenance of the sewage system is questioned about the deaths, he says, “According to law, manual scavenging warns about not entering the sewer without any safety gears and handling human waste with bare hands. It does not say no one should enter the sewer.” The film then asks the right questions to the contractors, and the audience. Why is the process yet to be completely mechanised? Has the necessary action been taken against such deaths? Who is responsible for the deaths? And this leads to a spree of blame games with each of them pointing fingers. Witness is not without its flaws, as it becomes preachy, and loses steam at times. But the clarity with which the film addresses the issue deserves appreciation. 

Rohini is brilliant as the mother who has lost her only child and is relentlessly fighting for justice. When Indrani is told that she might not win the case, she is sad, but not dejected. She says, “Jeikalana paravala sir / It is okay if we don’t win. But my son’s killers should stand in the court and give an answer.” And that’s what Witness wants to do. So the film does not play out like a legal thriller awaiting a dramatic result. It is rather about the valid arguments it makes. This is also the reason why the film’s climax might be difficult to digest. But the climax comes with a wonderful touch that points out how irrespective of who we are, we just pass the buck and remain mere witnesses.

What’s it about?

The story of a mother and son is told brutally in “Witness.” The film follows a group of manual scavengers as they take daily risks while cleaning the sewers. The sanitary department is staffed by Indrani (Rohini) and her son.

While tending to the manual sewers of an apartment complex one day, Indrani receives the tragic news that her son has died. Indrani, shocked by the events, resolves to fight the system for justice. The story continues to see if she is successful in this battle.

The first thing you should know is that “Witness” is a challenging film to sit through. It’s about the demeaning working conditions of people who clean our communities’ sewers by hand. The film addresses the systematic violence against the manual sewer workers, not just in Rohini’s case.

The screenplay, written by Muthuvel and JP Sanakya, delves deeply into the system and the officials’ discrimination against these workers on the basis of their caste.

Deepak, the film’s director, devotes a lot of time and energy to exploring this topic in depth, and the film’s serious drama, Witness, features some exciting courtroom scenes. The involvement of government officials, the dealings that take place behind closed doors, and the plight of manual sewers have all been presented in riveting detail.

Unfortunately, the film drags at times as well. A documentary-like atmosphere is created, almost. Not enough has been laid out to establish the depth of a mother’s grief at the death of her son. After the trial begins, the film changes pace and becomes more interesting.

Rohini is a seasoned actress. Whether she’s showing her emotional range or presiding over a courtroom scene, she never fails to captivate. Shraddha Srinath is cast in a pivotal role and shines in it as a character who is discriminated against because of her caste.

Excellent camerawork, capturing the unsettling reality of the perilous work of manual sewer cleaners. The film’s tone and dialogue reflect reality.

The film has a few touching moments, but overall its emotional impact is minimal.

Verdict: “Witness” is a gritty drama about a mom who takes on the establishment. The film focuses on the horrors of manual scavenging. The setting and the acting are both credible. The film definitely packs a punch.

ఒక పారిశుద్ధ్య కార్మికురాలిగా ఇందిర(రోహిణి) తన కొడుకు పార్తిబన్(తమిళరసన్)తో లైఫ్ ను లీడ్ చేస్తూ ఉంటుంది. ఐతే, కొన్ని నాటకీయ పరిణామాల నేపథ్యంలో వీళ్ల లైఫ్ లో ఓ ఊహించని సంఘటన జరుగుతుంది. అపార్ట్ మెంట్ లోని సెప్టిక్ ట్యాంక్ ని క్లీన్ చేస్తూ.. ఇందిర(రోహిణి) కొడుకు చనిపోతాడు. దీంతో ఇందిర(రోహిణి) జీవితం విషాదమయం అవుతుంది. తన కొడుకు చావుకు కారణం అయిన వారి పై న్యాయ పోరాటానికి దిగుతుంది. కమ్యూనిస్ట్ యూనియన్ లీడర్(సెల్వా) తో కలిసి పోలీసు స్టేషన్ లో ఫిర్యాదు చేస్తుంది. అనంతరం న్యాయం కోసం ఇందిర ఎలాంటి పోరాటం చేసింది ?, అవినీతి వ్యవస్థను ఆమె తట్టుకుని ఎలా నిలబడింది ? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

సెప్టిక్ ట్యాంక్ లో దిగి ఊపిరాడక కార్మికుడు మృతి అని చాలా సార్లు విని ఉంటాం. ఈ చిత్రంలో గత ఐదేళ్లలో చెన్నైలో దాదాపు 340 మంది ఇలానే చనిపోయారు. అదే విషయాన్ని ‘విట్ నెస్’ డైరెక్టర్ చాలా రియలిస్టిక్ గా చూపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు. సమాజంలో ప్రస్తుత మనుషుల స్వభావం గురించి, సిస్టమ్ లోని లొసుగులు గురించి సినిమాలో చర్చించిన అంశాలు బాగున్నాయి.

అలాగే పేదవాళ్ళు, కార్మికుల కష్టాలను, బలహీనతలను అలాగే పొరపాట్లను కూడా ఈ చిత్రంలో దర్శకుడు చాలా బాగా చూపించాడు. ముఖ్యంగా ఆయన రాసుకున్న ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. నటి రోహిణి ఈ చిత్రంలో పక్కా పారిశుద్ధ్య కార్మికురాలిగా చాలా బాగా నటించింది. తన సెటిల్డ్ పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ తో తన పాత్రకి పూర్తి న్యాయం చేసింది. కొడుకు పాత్రలో నటించిన నటుడు కూడా బాగా నటించాడు.

మరో ప్రధాన పాత్రలో కనిపించిన శ్రద్ధా శ్రీనాథ్ కూడా తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకుంది. ఈ సినిమాలో మరో ఇంపార్టెంట్ రోల్ లో కనిపించిన సెల్వా కూడా తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకున్నారు. ఇక మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు బాగానే చేసారు. డైలాగ్స్, అండ్ కొన్ని ఎమోషన్స్ బాగున్నాయి.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

సినిమా ప్రారంభ సీన్స్ నెమ్మదిగా సాగాయి. మొదటి పది నిమిషాల్లోనే రోహిణి తన కొడుకు చనిపోయాడనే వార్త విని, కాన్ ఫ్లిక్ట్ కి లోనైయినప్పటికీ, దర్శకుడు ఇంకా కొన్ని పాత్రలను పరిచయం చేస్తూ ప్లే ను స్లో గా డ్రైవ్ చేశాడు. అలాగే కొన్ని చోట్ల అయితే ఒక్కోసారి డాక్యుమెంటరీని చూస్తున్న అనుభూతి కలుగుతుంది.

ఇక కొడుకును కోల్పోయిన తల్లి యొక్క భావోద్వేగాలను ఆశించిన స్థాయిలో సరిగ్గా ఎస్టాబ్లిష్ చేయలేదు. అలాగే కోర్ట్‌ రూమ్ డ్రామా వచ్చేంత వరకూ కొన్ని సీన్స్ చాలా సింపుల్ గా సాగుతూ బోర్ కొట్టించాయి. మొత్తమ్మీద దర్శకుడు ప్రస్తుత సమాజంలోని వాస్తవ పరిస్థితుల గురించి మంచి డ్రామా తీసుకున్నా.. పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఆకట్టుకునే విధంగా కొన్ని సీన్స్ ను రాసుకోలేకపోయారు.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

సాంకేతిక విభాగం విషయానికి వస్తే ముందే చెప్పుకున్నట్లు.. దర్శకుడు దీపక్ మంచి పాయింట్ ను ఎంచుకున్నారు. అయితే, ఆ పాయింట్ కి తగ్గట్టు సరైన డ్రామాను రాసుకోలేకపోయారు. సినిమాలో బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ బాగుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. సినిమాలోని చాలా సన్నివేశాలను ఎంతో రియలిస్టిక్ గా, మంచి విజువల్స్ తో చూపించారు. ఎడిటింగ్ బాగుంది. నిర్మాత టి. జి. విశ్వ ప్రసాద్ ఎక్కడా కాంప్రమైజ్ కాకుండా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించారు. నిర్మాణ విలువులు చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

విట్ నెస్ అంటూ వచ్చిన ఈ ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామాలో.. నేటి సమాజంలో వాస్తవ పరిస్థితులకు సంబంధించి ఇచ్చిన మెసేజ్, కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్, కొన్ని డైలాగ్స్ వంటి ఎలిమెంట్స్ ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి. అయితే, సినిమా సీరియస్ మోడ్ లో సాగడం, అక్కడక్కడా కథనం నెమ్మదిగా సాగడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా ఈ సినిమా, ఓ వర్గం ప్రేక్షకులకు నచ్చుతుంది.

Megastar Chiranjeevi is celebrating his 69th birthday today, on August 22. The actor commenced his birthday celebrations by offering prayers at the auspicious Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala with his family. He was accompanied by his wife, Surekha Konidela. Chiranjeevi was dressed in traditional clothes to pay a visit to the sacred religious place. Videos of megastar Chiranjeevi visiting the sacred Tirumala temple are going viral. As Chiranjeevi stepped out of his house in a traditional dhoti and kurta to seek the blessings of Lord Balaji, he was also spotted with his wife, mother, granddaughter and other family members. He was dressed in an off-white silk mundu and kurta which he layered with a regal-looking shawl. As he made his way to the temple, he greeted his fans and devotees with utmost warmth.

Chiranjeevi is one of the most remarkable actors in the Indian industry and is a prominent figure in the Telugu film industry. His career spanned over four illustrious decades with multiple blockbusters and hits. He marked his venture into acting in the late 70s and catapulted to fame with his powerful performances, his charming personality and par-excellence acting chops. He has starred in more than 150 films and a few of his notable works are Khaidi, Gang Leader, Indra, and Tagore. He was last seen in Bholaa Shankar.

Chiranjeevi is gearing up for his upcoming film Vishwambhara. The makers decided to unveil a pre-look poster on the birthday of the megastar. To increase the hype of the fans, makers shared the poster today, which showed Chiranjeevi with an intense expression and holding a trishul in his hand. The caption read, “When darkness and evil take over the world, a magnanimous star shall shine bright to fight. Happy birthday, Megastar, Chiranjeevi. Let the world witness your aura with Vishwambhara. Get ready for a Mega Mass Beyond Universe. In cinemas from January 10th, 2025.”
