“Life is strife if we rest, we rest and if we work; we shine and the world gives us credit.” (Quotation)

There is no denying the significance of games and sports in life. They are essential to the construction of our muscles, nerves, and body. In addition, games teach us to be patient and persistent. Events like matches are full of energy. Some matches are very exciting, exciting, and full of tension. These matches are a lot of fun to watch, and people are amazed. Last Friday, I also had the opportunity to watch such a match. The cricket tournament’s final match was that one. Our youth is very much ambitious about games; especially about cricket. Every game has its plus points. It fosters discipline, duty, team spirit, co-operation, and sportsmanship.

“There is something called a spirit of cricket which cannot be defined.” (Quotation)

A Cricket Match

6 Best Essays on “A Cricket Match”

Essay No. 01

Last year we played a match which I will long to remember. It was played at the invitation of famous Cantonment Cricket Eleven.

We reached the Cantonment Club. George, the skipper of the other teams shook hands with our captain. He led the party to the field. Our captain lost the toss. We then our positions in the field. Near the stumps lay the red ball.

The batting began. The stout long man came in to bat. He played for a few minutes only and was then caught. One wicket was down with no runs! We were all so excited. Was the opposite team going to be defeated so easily? Presently the second batsman appeared. His very first stroke showed him a skilled player. His batting was firm and swift. He began piling up runs. We did not lose heart. We changed our bowlers, alternating fast one with slow ones. At last, our best bowler, Raj came forward. With his second ball, he took the batsman by surprise. Before the batsman could strike the ball, it had cleanly struck one of the stumps.

The batting continued, but no other player of the opposite team played so well as the second. They paled a good game but our bowlers proved too strong for them. The sixth batsman seemed to be in good form. He added considerably to the score.  The Cantonment team were all out by lunch hour. The score stood at 207.

Lunch being over, the referee gave a whistle. The players stood in the field again. Now our side went in to bat. Our first batsman made a poor start a poor start. After cutting a fastball or two he seemed to lose his grip on the bat. He could not score many runs. Our two wickets fell in quick succession. Cricket is a game of chance. So we thought it was too early to lose hope. As Ramesh, one of our best batsmen, went forward, we hoped he would recover lost ground. He started well and brought the score to 50, but then a fastball struck him on the face. He was carried away unconscious from the fields.

After a brief interruption the game was resumed, and our side went on batting, raising the score shanty our eighth batsman proved the hero of the day. With great confidence, he hit back every ball for the full two hours. He scored a century and twenty runs. Our score had already exceeded that of the opposite team. Before the stumps were drawn our captain declared at 375. The last man was not out.

Lots of young boys dream to become successful cricketers and devote all their time and energy to learn the skills of batting and blowing. Even women cricketers are showing their talents overboard. Essay No. 03

I am the Captain of my school cricket team. Our school arranged a learned coach a few months ago to groom our team in the art of Playing. Accordingly. I can boast with humility that our team is quite prepared to match any other cricket team in this area of our State.

Lest anybody should deem my assertion an empty boast, I here describe a match which our team played with a rival team recently.

It is a matter of just Sunday last. I had invited the team of the local government school to play a friendly match with our school team. The match was played in our school playground. Our team won the toss. We decided to bat first. All the players on both sides and the umpires and the referee took up their positions.

The referee blew the whistle and the match started. Our openers Punk and Amit reached the pitch with beaming faces. As the first ball was thrown by the bowler, Praveen, Punit sent the ball swirling towards the boundary. Clearly, it was a fourer. The playground which was packed to capacity, resounded with applause.

In this way, Punit amassed thirty six runs. There was suddenly a note of dismay when he was caught out by Keshev of the rival team. Amit , however, continued. He played slowly and continuously. He scored 29 runs before he was bowled out.

Before lunch our team had scored 202 runs in all in 40 overs. After lunch, the rival team started batting. Our team realized that the rival team was not that weak as we had thought them to be. Soon, they scored 53 runs.

My mates began to show the signs of getting unnerved. But I bucked them up. I also brushed up on fielding by changing the players. Suddenly, our crack bowler, Sandeep, showed his mettle when he felled down four wickets in quick succession.

The rival team crashed like a house of cards and finished at 172 in 37 overs. We won the match. All the team members hugged one another. There was rejoicing all around as the place hummed with the slogans ! “Hurrah !” “Hurrah !”

Games and matches inspire everyone. I am very much fond of witnessing a match and feel much delighted. The Principal of our College announced that a match was to be played shortly between our team and that of the S.D. College, Panipat on our college playground. I eagerly waited for the moment and felt very glad.

At last the day fixed for the match dawned. At 8 A.M. the players of both teams arrived in their uniforms. A large number of students of both the Colleges reached in time to witness the match. The members of the staff also arrived. Everyone looked at the players of both the teams who appeared to be very smart and active. The directors of Physical Education of both the teams worked as umpires.

Suddenly, there was much excitement amongst the players. The umpire whistled and the captains of both the teams reached the center of the ground. A spin of the coin decided the toss. Our team won the toss and our opponents held the field.

The game started at 8.10 A.M. As soon as the match started there was much clapping and cheers. The two players moved forward to initiate the game. They played well. It appeared that both of them were confident of their success. They were very fine batsmen. They were able to score fifty runs. Suddenly, one of them was caught out. After that another player of our team moved forward. He played well and gave a good account of himself. He easily raised our score to 110 before he was bowled out. As soon as the score was announced, there was wide cheering, whistling and clapping.

The captain of our team moved forward. He was a great player who had won many medals and merit certificates in cricket. He played so well that he was able to raise the score to 199. There was loud cheering as he was still unfatigued and untired. Thus our score went on mounting and it reached 212 when the lunch hour arrived and both the teams retired for taking lunch.

After the lunch, the game started again. Our opponents started playing. The first two players played astoundingly well and they scored 79 runs, but unfortunately the other players did not play well. Their score stood at 154. The team lost control over the game. The wickets began to fall speedily one after the other. The next player was soon bowled out. We witnessed the match eagerly as the time was drawing to a close. But the last player of the opponent team maintained the balance and raised their score to 170. The game was so well played that we felt that we could not easily have a win over the opposite team. We were doubtful of our victory. There were clappings all around and their score stood at 180 when their last player was caught out. Every face was beaming with joy. Now there was no hope of scoring any further run. The opponent team lost the game.

The time was over. There was wide clapping and cheering. The captain of our team was picked up by the youth of the college on their shoulders. To our greet joy, our team had won the match. But there was so much excitement and wonder that I could not hear any voice at all afterwards. The deafening voice of the onlookers stunned us and we were feeling an indescribable pleasure.

It was a red-letter day in the history of our College, as our team had won the match that was a closely contested one. Matches are always played amongst different teams of educational institutions, but I never witnessed so much excitement and a spate of joy in my life as I did on this occasion.

Last week we played a friendly match with Ramjas School. It was played at Talkatora grounds. Both the teams reached the ground. The captains of the two teams went in for a toss. The coin was thrown up in the air. Our captain won the loss and decide to bat first.

Out openers went in to open the innings. It was a limited 40-over match. We lost the first two wickets just for 10 runs in four overs. Rahul and Raman batted well. They took the score to 160 in 20 overs. Then Rahul was caught behind. Soon Raman was given LBW. The again fifth wicket partnership took the score to 200 runs. In the last five overs, our team lost 4 more quick wickets. The last pair remained not out and the final score after forty overs was 260.

Then there was a break for half an hour. We had our lunch. Our coach discussed the tactics of the game with the captain and other players. The match was resumed at 2 p.m. The openers of Ramjas School played cautiously. They took the score to 50 in ten overs. Soon one of them got run out. The next batsman who lost his wicket was the newcomer. They lost two wickets for fifty-two. Raman, our spinner, was brought not a bowl. He checked the score with his accurate line and length. Nikhil bowled superbly. He dismissed two batsmen for ten runs. Now the score was 88 for four. Their fifth-wicket partnership was worth 60 runs. The score reached 148 when one more batsman was declared run out. The score soon reached 200 for five in thirty-two overs. At this stage is looked as if we would lose the match. But then our fielders did well. They held 3 good catches in a spell of just 22 balls. Our captain then came in to bowl. In the very first over the trapped one batsmen LBW. In five overs, with one wicket in hand, the Ramjas team needed 26 runs to win the match. The chances of our team’s winning looked bright. In the last over the rival team needed ten runs to win. But as luck was on our side, the last man lost his middle stump in the first ball bowled by Raman.

The crowd of supporters of our team jumped up with joy. It was a well-fought and won the match. Players shook hands and took tea together.

This game with its importance is also necessary to be understood by students for exams and hence Cricket Essay for Students in English becomes an important topic in English. Here is everything regarding the Cricket Essay for Students in English via Vedantu.

Cricket is a very popular game and is played at both national and international levels. This game originated in England. Cricket was introduced to the Indians by the British in the early 1700s. This game rules in everyone’s heart in India and so it can be called the “king of the games”. Millions of fans watch this game, and there is an air of excitement everywhere. It is enjoyed by the old and young. Over the years, this game has gathered a huge fan-base, who connects emotionally with it in our country.

History of Cricket

The game of cricket goes long back to British times. When it was introduced in India, very few people played this game. The Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh brought this game into limelight. He was a great patron of sports. He played cricket and he had his own team. Cricket was his second love after his kingdom. He was the man behind the golden history of cricket due to his passion for the game. His team Patiala XI was the best team during that time and he was the captain of the Indian team. He himself sponsored his teams for the tours to England.

How is Cricket Played?

Cricket is a game played by two teams of eleven players each on a pitch with two sets of three stumps, which are called wickets. The bowler bowls the ball down the pitch to the batsman of the opposing team, who must defend the wickets in front of which he stands. The target of the game is to score as many runs as possible.

Runs are scored by individual players by running on the playing strip (called pitch) between the wickets, or by hitting a ball that flies outside the boundary of the playground or which falls inside the boundary but bounces or rolls outside. When the balls go directly outside the boundary, the batsman scores six runs, and when the ball falls within the boundary but rolls outside then the batsman scores four runs. The opponent team will bowl and field and their objective is to take the wickets for each of the batsmen playing on the pitch.

A batsman can be dismissed in one of several ways: by the bowler hitting the wicket with the ball, which is called, bowled; by a fielder catching the ball hit by the batsman before it touches the ground and it is called caught; by the wicket-keeper or another fielder breaking the stumps while the batsman attempts a run and is therefore out of his ground. This is called stumped or run out. A batsman can also be dismissed if the batsman breaks the wicket with his own bat or body and this is called a hit wicket; by a part of the batsman’s body being hit by a ball that would otherwise have hit the wicket is called leg before the wicket or “lbw”.

A match consists of one or two innings, and each inning ends when the tenth batsman of the batting team is out, when a certain number of overs (an over: a series of six balls bowled) have been played or when the captain of the batting team declares ending the innings voluntarily.

Forms of Cricket

There are three forms of cricket: Test matches, one-day internationals, and T20 internationals.

Test matches are played for five days. To play this game, the players have to excel mentally and physically. This game is played in white tees and trousers. In this game, the players have to play for ninety overs each day.

In one-day internationals, the players play an inning of fifty overs. This kind of cricket is played only for a day. It was introduced in the 1980s.

T20 is the latest format of this game. In a T20 match, they play an inning of only twenty overs. This game is pretty interesting and engaging.

Achievements by the Indian Team

India won its first world cup in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. It was a big win in the history of cricket. Next, they won the world cup in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. India also won the T20 ICC World trophy and ICC Champions trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Besides these prestigious trophies, India has acclaimed many other victories in world cricket.

Indian Cricket Team

Cricket is played by both men and women. The captain of the women’s national cricket team is Harmanpreet Kaur. Women’s national cricket team made its first debut in 1976. Mithali Raj was the captain during the debut.

Virat Kohli is the captain of the Indian cricket team (men's). We have some great players from the past who have established themselves internationally and taken India to a very high pedestal in the world of cricket and brought pride to the country. Some of them are Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, and many more.

Long Essay on A Cricket Match 500 Words for Kids and Students in English

Saturdays are a holiday in school for us. but last Saturday the entire school was present. We were to have a cricket match with the Sardar Patel boys, starting at 10 in the morning. While the home team as well as the guest team were getting ready, the stands filled up with students, teachers and even a number of enthusiastic parents.

Exactly at 10 am, Mr Bakshi, our cricket coach along with the coach of the visiting team came to the pitch. They were accompanied by the two captains. The SP captain won the toss and he chose to bat first. As our home team came on to the field and took their positions, there was loud cheering from the stands. Then entered the two batsmen with the captain of SP facing the first ball. Ranjeet, our top bowler was known for his spins.

Essay on A Cricket Match

The captain barely managed to hit the first onslaught. The first over ended as a maiden over. However all our hopes began to dampen when in the second over the first ball was hit to the boundary. It was followed by a quick succession of runs that made us cross our fingers.

Then suddenly OUT! The middle stump was flung back and the umpire raised his right hand’s index finger. By lunch time the SP team had garnered a good 260 runs. It being a 20 overs match our team was faced with a herculean task to match their score.

After lunch, amidst loud cheering, Sunil our sports captain and Prakash our schools top athlete came in as the opening batsmen. From the very first ball they showed their mettle. Runs came pouring in as both of them sent the balls flying to the boundary. Just as we were sure of winning the match Prakash hit the ball for a six, but was caught out. A loud exclamation of disappointment went up from the crowd. Then followed some of our middle order batsmen. Except for one who was run out at zero all the others managed to add on a decent amount of runs.

As the day began to come to a close the two team fought on. With only the last over remaining the home team was still short of 10 runs. Any thing could happen. Our captain Sunil was still standing and as he faced the ball, we could see the determination on his face. But the SP team were no greenhorns. They had set the field in a manner that would make it difficult for him to score a boundary. The three players at slip would prevent him from taking the singles. We watched with bated breath. All our hopes pinned on our captain. The first ball he just stopped but the second he sent flying over the stands. We still could win! The SP team closed in around the batsmen who looked around desperately for a gap. Then on the second last ball, Abhay the other batsman hit a resounding 4. Yes! the home team had scored a total of 261 runs and won the match.

As the two teams returned to the stands everyone stood up to cheer and applaud. It had been an exciting match and our team captain retained his title as the most popular student. I shall remember this match for a long time to come.

In India, cricket is a popular game. In our school, many students play it while others enjoy seeing it. I am not a cricket player, but I am a cricket fan.

The other day a very interesting cricket match was held in our school. It was a one-day limited over match. It was played between the team of Happy School and Our School team.

We reached the school early that day. The match started at 9 A.M. The two Umpires entered the ground. They were followed by the two captains. There was a toss of a coin. We won the toss and elected to bat first.

Our openers played very well. Our team made a huge score of 298 runs and lost only four wickets.

After lunch, the Happy School Team started batting. Their opening batsman played intelligently. But the whole team was out for 265 runs in 48 overs and lost the match.

Pankaj, off-spinner, played a crucial role. He bowled out five players and was awarded the Man of the Match.

Games are necessary for the healthy growth of the body as they also keep a person fit. Cricket is a very popular game not only in India but in other countries of the world also.

Every year Cricket Board organizes international matches as these matches help in promoting friendly relations among the countries. These matches also attract a large crowd as the top players are selected to play in these matches.

In October last year, a cricket match was played between India and Pakistan at the Fezon Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi. Thousands of people had come to watch the match. So the security around the stadium was very tight. The tickets were sold in advance.

On the fixed day the match started at eleven o’clock. The Pakistan team won the toss and decided to field first. The Indian openers came to bat and their performance was very good. They were Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly. Rahul Dravid was out on 76. Other batsmen went on piling up the score and the Pakistan spinners and fast bowlers tried to contain them but our batsmen were simply unstoppable that day. The batsmen hit fours and continued scoring and in the first innings, they succeeded in putting a huge score of 365 runs.

The Pakistan team did not play well as their first innings score was only 122 because the bowlers of our team had caused havoc on them.

The Pakistan team was given “follow-on” but they could not make up the difference and lost the match by one inning and ten runs. The match lasted for only four days.

The other day we had some exciting cricket. The occasion was a cricket match between the Lions Club and the Rotary Club. The match was played on the grounds of Minto Park.

The Lions Club won the toss and chose to bat. Satish and Harjit were the opening batsmen. Satish played the first ball from Madan. As the game progressed, Harjit was caught out by Naresh off a ball from Narinder. His individual score was just two, and the total stood at ten. Chander now joined Satish and regaled the spectators with his fine strokes. He was, however, run out for thirty runs. Then came Manjit, the captain of the team. The partnership between him and Satish pushed the score to 112. It was at this moment that Satish was stumped out. The other wickets fell in quick succession. Only Manjit was at the crease till the end. The whole side was out for 162 runs. It was now lunchtime.

The play was resumed at 2 p.m. Kailash and Madan came as the openers. Kailash was dismissed for ten runs. Gurnam joined Madan but was caught out at the first ball. Then came Mahesh. He was caught in the slips. It was Manjit who had performed the hat trick, to the sheer delight of the spectators. When Tirath, the fifth man, came, the total stood at ten. But the partnership between Tirath and Madan carried the score to a very respectable figure of 150. Now Madan lost his wicket to the deadly Manjit. The players who joined Tirath one after the other did not contribute much. The whole side was out for 163 runs. It was Tirath who scored the winning single for the Rotary Club!

I have never seen such an exciting cricket match.

In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

Formats of Cricket

As Cricket has various formats, it has a different fan base for each of them. Some people like watching test matches because of their intensity and authenticity. While some enjoy Twenty-20, that require minimum engagement and are highly entertaining. Test Match is a format of cricket that is quite traditional.

It lasts up to five days and two countries play against each other in this match. Next up, we have the National League Systems, also called counties in England. Their duration is for three to four days.

Limited Overs Cricket is another type where the number of episodes decides the format and length of the game. Both the teams get to play a single inning and thus results are determined.

However, if it rains, they apply the Duck worth- Lewis Method to attain results. One of the most common formats is One Day International also known as ODI. Two countries play against each other for a total of fifty overs. Finally, this is probably the most entertaining format of cricket, the Twenty-20. It only has 20 overs to play and is quite exciting and engaging.

The turning point for cricket in India came in 1983 when the Indian cricket team achieved a historic victory by winning the Cricket World Cup . This triumph captured the imagination of the entire nation and ignited a cricketing revolution. The team’s underdog victory instilled a newfound sense of belief and pride among Indians, paving the way for cricket’s elevation to a position of cultural significance.

India’s cricketing prowess extends far beyond its borders. The nation has achieved remarkable success on the international cricket scene, from winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1983 and 2011 to consistently ranking among the top teams in various formats.

Essay on Cricket Match with Quotes for FSC 2nd Year

Last month I got a chance to see a one-day cricket match played between our National team and the Indian team. Our college announced a holiday to witness this match. We had bought the tickets two days before they reached the stadium at 9 O’clock. We were surprised to see all the enclosures fully packed. Men, women, children and old persons from every walk of life had come to see this match. Fortunately, we got seats near the commentary box.

“Cricket is a pressure game, and when it comes to an India-Pakistan match the pressure is doubled.” (Imran Khan)

The match started at 10 O’clock. Waqar Younis, the Captain of the Pakistan team won the toss. He invited the Indians to play first. Both the openers of the Indian Team were experienced batsmen. But they could not play confidently before the Pakistani bowlers. The wicket was giving great help to the fast bowlers like Waseem Akram and Waqar Younis. In the first five overs, they took two wickets against only ten runs. It appeared that the whole Indian team would not be able to score even one hundred runs. But the careful batting by Tendulkar and Laxman gave good support to their team. But Waqar made a wise change by introducing Mushtaq from the college end. His ball was taking a sharp turn and he took the important wicket of Laxman in his first over. The fielding of our team was perfect and they were enjoying the home ground. People clapped and danced when Shoaib took a very difficult catch. Our Wicket Keeper Rashid showed a wonderful performance by stumping out three Indian players. Two of them were run-out and the last three batsmen were caught behind the wickets. At last, the whole team was out after making only one hundred and fifty runs.

Champions never sleep, the eternal spirit keeps them alert and awake.”

There was a break of one hour between the two innings. We also had our lunch. The stadium was picturesque. Especially, the ladies enclosure looked very attractive. People were holding the national flags and banners in their hands and waving them.

“A true batsman should in most of his strokes tell the truth about himself.” (Neville Cardus)

Pakistanis started their innings and Shahid came to pen with Saeed. The target was quite easy and our batsmen played aggressive shots from the very beginning. The captain of the Indian team tried many bowlers one after the other, but he could not succeed to break the partnership. Both the openers scored eighty runs. Then came the great Inzi and Yousaf who loved to hit the ball with full force. Whenever they scored a boundary, people enjoyed and jumped at their seats. In this way, Pakistan defeated India by seven wickets. Shahid was declared the man of the match. It was a match that we can remember forever.

“A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” (Mary Lou Retton)
