As the application window for international schools remains open, it’s not too late to apply for a teaching job abroad and the excitement it can offer.

However, to land a job you need to first secure an interview, which means submitting a strong CV and cover letter. As someone who routinely reviews applications and shortlists candidates, it is disconcerting to see so many potentially promising applications let down by basic errors.

So, if you want to land that job, look at these top tips and make sure these mistakes don’t crop up in your application:

Tips for teacher job applications

1. School names - get them right

We know you might be applying to multiple schools but any application must get the name of the school right at every mention.

That may sound obvious but I have seen names spelled wrong, incorrect capitalisations and sometimes even the wrong school name used entirely.

Additionally, addressing the application to the correct recipient adds another layer of professionalism, while getting this wrong means you are unlikely to progress.

2. Proofread

One way to avoid the above is to ask someone else to proofread your application. After all, given the professional standards expected in education, submitting a letter with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes is hardly likely to set the right tone.

3. Understand the school’s identity

Generic statements about aligning with a school’s mission or values are insufficient without specific references.

For example, we often see sentences like this: “ I aim to promote holistic development by addressing social, emotional, and ethical aspects alongside cognitive skills.”

This sort of sentence is easily identifiable as written by AI because it has a very bland tone and style within an overly complex sentence that is chiefly just filled with cliche. It is very easy to spot these when reading multiple applications.

Remember, you are likely to be questioned on the content of your letter in the interview and if you can’t explain what you have written, it will be obvious. If you can’t be bothered to write your own application or educational ethos statement, what does that say about you?

5. References - have them ready

Omitting references hinders progress in the recruitment process. They are crucial for safeguarding protocols and interview considerations.

Providing a comprehensive list of references, including current and past affiliations, not only smooths the application process but also enhances an applicant’s credibility.

In this current day and age, you are unlikely to get to an interview if you do not have referees willing to give you references or you are unwilling to submit them first.

If you get these basics right and are invited to interview, the likelihood is it will be online. Here, again, I regularly witness potentially promising candidates letting themselves down with basic mistakes that can be easily avoided:

Professional appearance : Dress appropriately, even for virtual interviews. It reflects respect and professionalism. Showing up in a hoody because it’s 6.30am in the UK is not acceptable, nor is hugging a mug of coffee and slurping from it during the interview.

Avoid distractions : Refrain from using other devices during interviews so that you maintain focus and demonstrate preparedness. You should have done your research on the school - have sticky notes stuck to your screen to refer to if you need to, but you should not be Googling or looking online during the interview. That blue light reflection in your face will give it away every time!

Posture and demeanou r: Maintain good posture and exhibit proper etiquette to create a positive first impression. Make sure your screen image is clear, the sound works and you’re not slouching during the interview.

Check your background is appropriate and that you will have no distractions. Having to switch to another device because your sound is not working is not a good impression. These checks should all have been made beforehand.

Engage : Your interviewers know this is a daunting experience, so try to relax, smile and be yourself. Showcase your personality while demonstrating preparedness and professionalism.

The Department of Surgery Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center is seeking a Research Area Specialist Intermediate to conduct and manage various research related activities within the Physical Activity Laboratory (PAL).  This position will work with multiple research teams in accurately and efficiently carrying out a range of tasks associated with a variety of clinical research studies.  The primary responsibilities of this position include exercise testing, exercise training and metabolic testing, as well as training oversight.   All testing and training must be conducted safely according to research protocols.  Because training and testing occur outside of normal business hours (PAL currently operates from 6a-6p), the candidate must be reliable and available during these times.

Responsibilities*

The selected candidate for this position will serve as a key research member for the Nutrition, Exercise and Phenotype Testing Core (NExT). NExT is a collaborative network of laboratory and research facilities on campus, which provide expanded support for clinical and translational research studies using nutrition interventions and/or focused on obesity or obesity-related metabolic disorders in humans. The immediate program needs for this position are focused on managing the PAL daily operations, conducting metabolic testing, body composition and assist with physical activity design and executions for research teams. The coordinator will assist NExT research teams in a variety of research areas, including coordination of testing and research projects as well as execution of research.

What You will do:

  • Collaborate and coordinate with research teams to conduct high quality research; maintain knowledge of specific study and regulatory guidelines to help ensure compliance.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new research projects.
  • Conduct metabolic and exercise tests  e.g., VO2max, Resting Metabolic Rate, fitness assessments, body composition.  Oversee/coordinate exercise training studies. 
  • Manage project data, including data collection, organization and storage, as well as ensure data consistency/security.
  • Assist in data analysis and interpretation of data findings e.g., lifestyle behavior data collected from wearable devices.
  • Supervise, orient, coordinate and manage other members of the research team including graduate/undergraduate students and other trainees.

Required Qualifications*

DESCRIPTION

Involves the development and implementation of strategy and network development across the medical center and the health system . Includes hospital and physician network development, joint ventures, outreach initiatives and clinical enterprise business development. Builds relationships with new providers and develops Epic deployment methodologies to increase market footprint, while reducing the cost for UCSDH. Develops multiple methods and services to strengthen relationships and meet the needs of physicians in the marketplace.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training. Related experience: Community Connect affiliates and supporting technology infrastructure.

Experience and advanced knowledge of health care industry trends, with advanced knowledge of the medical center or health system's product lines and services.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certified or proficient in at least 2 Epic areas, and preferably include Epic security.

Good understanding of UCSD's Epic infrastructure and deployment methodologies.

Ability to project manage large to small size affiliate Epic go-lives.

Ability to establish policies and procedures for Epic infrastructure deployment methodologies for external organizations.

Have advanced knowledge of various technologies outside of Epic to meet the needs of the physicians in the marketplace.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $101,200 - $192,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $48.47 - $92.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).

Federal, state, or local public health directives may impose additional requirements. If applicable, life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.
