Synopsis/Plot : Fidaa is a feel-good family story of two couples. Bhanumati (Sai Pallavi) and her sister Renuka live in a village near Banswada in Telangana. Raju (Raja Chembolu) who is an NRI, in match making process, visits Renuka�s house along with his younger brother Varun (Varun Tej). Raju likes Renuka and as they prepare for marriage, love blossoms between Bhanumati and Varun. While Raju and Renuka are happily married, there is a conflict between the lead couple. Sekhar Kammula, the director of classic hits such as "Anand" and "Happy Days", has returned to the genre of love stories after a long gap.
The recently released trailer and the soothing melodies coupled with Sai Pallavi's charm raised expectations on the film. Find out if Kammula has come back to form or not.
Story: Varun (Varun Tej), a NRI, lands in rural village in Telangana to attend the wedding ceremony of his brother (Raja) and meets Bhanumathi (Sai Pallavi), the bride's sister. They get attracted to each other and start finding out about themselves.
Due to a misunderstanding, they part ways on a bad note. Though he likes her, she hates him for some incident.
Months later, Bhanumathi comes to USA to see her pregnant sister. Will they fall in love this time? Does the story end on happier note?
Artistes’ Performances: Though it is a love story, it is the heroine who gets complete dominance. The story is more about Bhanumathi, played by Sai Pallavi, than Varun.
And in the role of Bhanumathi, debutante Sai Pallavi (who played the role of lecturer in Malayalam's Premam) steals the show. It is her show from the start to finish. She has terrific screen presence and her performance is quite believable. Quite impressive that she got the Telugu language with Telangana dialect so perfectly.
Sai Chand as heroine’s father and Sathyam Rajesh are good. Sharanya Pradeep as Sai Pallavi's sister and Raja have done decent job as well.
Technical Excellence: Music director Shakthikanth Karthick has come up with three good songs - "Vacchinde", "Edo Avuthondi" and "Oosupodu" but the songs are not filmed properly. Except "Vacchinde", rest come as montage songs.
Next technician that deserves pat on the shoulder is Vijay Kumar. He has filmed both rural Telangana and USA locations beautifully.
Editing work doesn't impress much as pace of movie is quite slow. Production values by Dil Raju are first rate.

Analysis: Sekhar Kammula's recent movies like "Life Is Beautiful" and "Anamika" have failed to strike a note with the audiences. Hence he has gone back to his roots - telling simple love stories with a strong female character.
"Fidaa" has his trademark story of two youngsters finding love in love-hate-love cycle, but this time the backdrop is rural Telangana and USA.
What he has done this time is telling a story with a spirited young woman called Bhanumathi, who claims to be 'single piece', as there is none like her.
The characterisation of Bhanumathi is different. Her attitude, her dialogues, her idealistic nature is likable to the core.
And luckily, Sekhar Kammula found a perfect heroine for his character in the form of Sai Pallavi. She has owned the role and lived in it.
Her performance is the single major attraction of this movie that has some strong notes, some dull moments. The film completely belongs to her. Anybody can easily go fidaa over her.
She is not what can term a conventional beauty (she has acne on her face), but the girl-next-door looks and killer performance wins over.
Sekhar Kammula begins the movie in a shaky manner, but the romance of Sai Pallavi and Varun Tej take us into the story.
There are not any moments or scenes that we haven't seen before, but the realistic handling makes all the difference. Entire first half of the movie is so cool and heart-warming.
Once the intermission happens with the misunderstanding between the two lovers, the story shifts to the US. From here, the movie loses its pace and the fun element also wears off.
Sekhar Kammula has included some heavy and dull situations post interval and that sort of drags on the story.
Yet, moments like Varun Tej expressing his love towards her during their car journey and asking her to be a friend at least make an impression. The scene of Sai Pallavi coming to a party in modern dress is good too.
All through the film, we see love and hate, hate and love sequences. But the love moments are lovely to some extent. The hate moments are not that impressive. We get a feeling that the misunderstanding scene should have had a stronger reason.
The biggest striking point of the movie is realistic portrayal of village, characters and conversations. Though the dialogues mouthed by Sai Pallavi may not be easily comprehended in Andhra and Rayalaseema areas, they in fact sparkle with wit.
All in all, "Fidaa" is a niche film that works with movie lovers who seek realistic love stories and can bear slow pace. This is not for all.
But one must appreciate Sekhar Kammula for making a movie with such a strong female character and going with the flow vis-a-vis commercial thinking.
At the box-office, the film has high chances to click in A centres and overseas.

‘Fidaa’ review: Sai Pallavi makes a magnificent Telugu debut in this fun romcom
Sekhar Kammula is back with a romantic film that focuses on the relationship between the leads, after a decade.
His Anand and Godavari are my textbooks, and like a diligent pupil I can recite lines and sing songs from those films. I go back to them in the times of love and longing. His movies in the last decade may have whizzed out of public memory, but he is known as the filmmaker who brought in the morning sun, drizzle, and coffee into the theatres, with the aroma of romance, comedy, and drama.
In his latest Fidaa , he brews a story of a woman (Bhanumathi, played by Sai Pallavi) and a man (Varun, played by Varun Tej), in the pot of convoluted egos. Bhanu, early on in the film, asks a fundamental question: Why should women leave everybody and everything behind and live with their husbands? Her sister, also Varun’s sister-in-law, answers with a fairytale metaphor. It’s the kind of metaphor that would put any person, irrespective of their gender, on a giant wheel of emotions.
The US boy, Varun, and the Banswada girl, Bhanu, play a cat and mouse game. She doesn’t like the fact that the groom’s family gets to have the last say in every matter. While she tries to push Varun away by being bossy, she drops her guard and warms up to him when she witnesses his deeds and hears his words.
What’s a Sekhar Kammula film without the pitter-patter of rains? He has borrowed the scenic vibes of monsoon for almost every film of his for the viewing pleasure of the audience ( Anand ’s “Vache Vache”, Godavari ’s “Tappulu Tippulu”, etc.). For Fidaa , though, he goes a step ahead and opens the gates of the sky as a major chunk of the film is drenched in rainwater. The quiet lanes and green agricultural fields pop up vibrantly, thanks to Vijay C Kumar’s cinematography. These colours coordinate well with the contrasting landscape of the US.
In the places where we expect a sob fest, we get a gentle touch of relevance and realism. The leads do cry buckets and buckets, yet they don’t grow into a dramatic nuisance. Varun, upset that his ‘proposal’ was turned down by Bhanu, drops her off at a bus station and tells her to use public transport to go to her friend’s house. She looks at him begrudgingly and doesn’t utter a word. He does come back for her. She does get into the car, after a five-second argument. When the rocky equation they share and the love-and-hate emotions they throw at each other come out in such good measure, it’s a story one would definitely feel for.
Sai Pallavi’s Telugu is way off the mark. I learnt this bit of information from her interviews. However, the way she has essayed her role raises the bar for all the artistes who can’t even get their lip-syncing right. Especially in this romcom, her language has a tongue that’s different from the norm of the Telugu film heroine. Her Telangana dialect is reminiscent of Kaushik’s (Priyadarshi) from Pelli Choopulu . Here, she’s the lead whose part is stronger and heavier than her male counterpart’s. So, every word coming from her mouth sounds fresh and sarcastic. Varun Tej’s act, on the other hand, can be described by the phrase Bhanu uses, “Ayyo, Siggu! (Oh, boy, you’re shy!).” Yes, indeed, his shyness spills from his handsome face neatly. He plays the “Sanna, Sannaga Navvinde (smiling coyly)” boy to perfection.
Varun has experimented a little with his roles. His 2015 gamble, Kanche , worked, whereas his formulaic films ( Loafer and Mister ) failed. I’m not sure if his star status as a Sekhar hero would increase his opportunities, but, I’m pretty confident that this film would remain as a welcome-bouquet for his on-screen romantic image.
The music (Shakthi Kanth’s soundtrack album and Jeevan’s score) are like the rains in Fidaa . The movie is incomplete without them. Take a look at the title font, if you still don’t believe me. There’s rain everywhere.
I retire for the day by returning to the question the film asks – Why should women leave everybody and everything and live with their husbands? Sekhar’s solution to this key problem is emphatic.

‘Fidaa’ Review : A fun filled feel-good movie !

Sekhar Kammula who once happened to enjoy a star director status in overseas market, specifically in youth segment, seemed to have lost his Midas touch in the recent past. In an attempt to regain his former glory, the director came up with a youthful entertainer ‘Fidaa’ in association with Dil Raju who is also known for family pleasant movies. Let’s find out if this film work in favor of the actors and makers?
Story: Fidaa is a feel-good family story of two couples. Bhanumati (Sai Pallavi) and her sister Renuka live in a village near Banswada in Telangana. Raju (Raja Chembolu) who is an NRI, in match making process, visits Renuka’s house along with his younger brother Varun (Varun Tej). Raju likes Renuka and as they prepare for marriage, love blossoms between Bhanumati and Varun.
While Raju and Renuka are happily married, there is a conflict between the lead couple. Raju, Renuka and Varun leave for USA. Rest of the story is about how the conflict between Varun and Bhanumati develops and subsequently leading to the climax.
Analysis: Set in the background of a middle-class family, Fidaa is a testimony of Sekhar Kammula’s sensibilities. The rural backdrop, the bonding of two sisters, their lively conversations and the soul of rural Telangana makes you fall in love with the film for its entire first half. In the role of rebellious village belle Bhanumati which is an author backed role, Sai Pallavi nailed it with her stellar performance and dubbing. Dialogues showcasing the attitude of Bhanumati are enjoyable not only by the youth but also by family audience. The prompt punch liners by her are smartly written. The marriage of Raju and Renuka happens during a heavy downpour in the village. It is very realistic with a nice execution.
However, the misunderstanding between Varun and Bhanumati towards interval fails to sound convincing. Bhanumati, being bold and new age girl, suspecting Varun for an insignificant reason is impractical. Superhit song “Vachinde…Melliga Vachinde” is fantastic on screen. Again, Sai Pallavi who is also an amazing dancer, made this song hit. Other two songs in first half “Hey Mister”, “Ey Pillagaada” are decent enough. Overall, first half is very good for all sections of audience despite slow narration at times.
Second half begins with all the characters except Bhanumati returning to the USA. Conflicts escalate between Varun and Bhanumati. The love proposal scene and Bhanumati’s response are hilarious. Towards middle of the second half, movie considerably slows down with the story going nowhere. The love – hate – love thread between Varun and Bhanumati becomes redundant. However, the conflict, the realization and the reunion points are not narrated in a convincingly manner. The movie would have been a blockbuster, had Sekhar excelled in these aspects. Bhanumati characterization seemed to be diluted, especially in the second half, as her love-hate confusion is not heart touching. Melodious superhit “oosupodhu…” song comes as Montage song. Fast beat number “Edo Jarugutondi..” is also good. There is nothing new that the story has to offer, except for the different backdrops (Rural Telangana and USA) which brings about some freshness.
Performances: Varun Tej as Varun has evolved significantly as an actor. He needs to keep a check on his weight. Sai Pallavi is the show stealer and brings life into Bhanumati’s character. Her own dubbing in Telangana accent is praiseworthy. However, in her close-up shots, pimples all over her cheeks is bit annoying to watch. Raja Chembolu who is Sirivennela Sitarama Sastry’s son, played nicely as Varun’s brother. Sharanya Pradeep as Sai Pallavi’s sister did well and is a good choice for the role. Sai Chand as the father of the girls is a perfect fit.
Technicians: Sekhar Kammula still remains relevant with youth. He observed the present generation girls as good as he did in Anand, 13 years ago. Fidaa may not be his best work, but definitely has its moments of sensibilities, feelings and emotions. Shakthikanth Karthick’s music has soul and all songs are pretty much good. Background score is decent. Dil Raju spent lavishly wherever required to deliver the look of a quality film. Presently when YouTube type short film quality is flourishing in the industry, it is good to see that the makers spent well to give a true cinematic appeal. Editor and cinematographer did their job well to make this flick a decent watch.
Verdict: Fidaa is a feel-good film with loads of humor, love, emotions and nice songs. While the first half is very good, second half is just passable with few dull moments. This film may not be Sekhar Kammula’s best work, but definitely worth watching with the family. Heroine Sai Pallavi is the show stealer with her commendable performance. This film has all ingredients to become HIT in ‘A’ centers and in overseas market.

It should be noted that the Tamil–Malayalam girl had dubbed her voice in Telugu and it had come out really well. Right from her first shot, Sai grabs the eye balls of the viewers. On the whole, Fidaa is neither a Sekhar Kammula movie nor a Varun Tej movie but a Sai Pallavi special. Watch the film in theaters; you will definitely like it!
