The Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) at the University of Toronto is pleased to announce the implementation of a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program – the first ever offered by a Canadian university. The program is aligned with the School’s Academic Plan 2019-2024 and will serve to bolster and strengthen public health and health systems capacity in Canada, and potentially, across the globe. While our other doctoral programs are research-intensive, the DrPH focuses on accelerating the use of research evidence to inform practice and policy. As such, the DrPH program offers practice-based training and applied research skills. Students will develop and advance important key leadership, management, and public health practice competencies.

Degree Overview

The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) advances public health education, addressing evaluation and translation of evidence in policy and practice decision-making contexts. The doctoral professional program is based on existing areas of faculty expertise within the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (including Public Health Sciences and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation). The focus of the program is to contribute to emerging needs in public health to address increasingly complex issues. Graduates will develop skills and knowledge in four major competency areas, as defined by the Council on Education for Public Health: (1) Data & Analysis; (2) Leadership, Management, Governance; (3) Policy & Programs; and (4) Education & Workforce Development. The DrPH will allow graduates to take on advanced roles (e.g., leadership, knowledge translation) in public health policy and practice settings.

The program is offered on a full-time basis over 4 years of study and is comprised of five major components: course work, an applied research project, a comprehensive exam, a thesis, and a final oral exam.

Students attend 1-week on-campus “burst weeks” (~6 hours/day) in the each term of years 1 – 3. The applied research project takes place in the summer of year 1 and the comprehensive exam in the summer of year 2. Thesis work begins in year 3 and continues through year 4.

There is a growing need and demand for public health professionals who have advanced professional education and the skills to implement improvements in our public health and health care systems in Canada and globally. The is imperative as “public health challenges become more global and complex”. [1]

The DrPH builds on and complements existing Masters and PhD programs respectively, and allows students to continue their academic education, in addition to developing other advanced professional competencies. It is a professional degree that fosters advanced knowledge in evidence-based public health by providing the knowledge and skills needed to interpret and critically appraise different types of evidence, conduct applied research, and propose/implement evidence-based changes to policy or practice.

Many public health and health system organizations require individuals with advanced education in the effective translation of knowledge and in transformative leadership. Through the integration and application of knowledge and skills in data analysis, leadership, policy and program management, and effective communication, DrPH graduates will be prepared for senior leadership careers in public, not-for-profit organizations, as well as for-profit organizations.

The program is offered on a full-time basis over 4 years of study. To maximize flexibility for DrPH students (many who continue to work), the curriculum is delivered throughout the calendar year, using a combination of in-person and online formats.

The University of Toronto does not offer remote doctorate degrees. As a professional degree, however, the program is designed with maximum flexibility for the student cohort to manage several responsibilities concurrently. For example, the core DrPH required courses are offered as on-line or hybrid.

As the DrPH program was launched during the global COVID-19 pandemic, several modifications to the courses allowed successful implementation, some that will carry on post-pandemic as they proved to be both efficient and effective. On-campus activities resumed in in January 2022 as did the in-person sessions of hybrid courses and on campus in-person sessions.

As personal interaction with your fellow students, faculty, and community public health leaders is an important element of the educational process, three on-campus “Burst Weeks” are held in September, January and April. These weeks will incorporate the in-class portions of the hybrid courses, various skill forums (e.g., media training), cohort thinktanks, and a variety of interactions with faculty and community public health leaders.

Important to consider is most courses at the DLSPH are offered in-person or hybrid. Thus, student’s selection of a required methods course and the free choice elective courses may not be offered remotely, and the student will be responsible to organize course selection based on their needs, i.e., optimal elective courses for a particular student’s need may be only offered in person.

Competencies

The DrPH emphasizes competencies that support the comprehensive evaluation and translation of evidence in policy- and practice- decision-making contexts. By integrating advanced education with professional competency development and a significant practical/field experience, graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, methods, and tools to effectively apply evidence to public health policy and practice. Graduates are well-positioned to lead public health and health system organizations, address complex health and health system challenges, and can adapt and effectively respond to emerging health needs, threats, and changing health systems.

We welcome mid-career professionals with relevant Masters-level training (such as a Master of Public Health, Master of Health Sciences, Master of Health Administration, etc.) plus a minimum of 5 years of work experience to apply. The program is designed for working professionals, with online learning components integrated throughout.

Course Requirements: 6.0 FCE (5.0 FCE core courses and 1.0 FCE elective courses)

Managing Pre-requisites

It is important to review all prerequisites when planning your course of study. When pre-requisites are listed, they normally indicate DLSPH courses (PHS or IHPME), but equivalent courses taken elsewhere would be considered since most DrPH students would not have completed PHS/IHPME courses during their master’s degree program, if completed elsewhere.

Prerequisites may also be ratified with work experience. For example, one DrPH student completed an MPH at University of Waterloo where it is likely that equivalent courses were completed. That, along with work experience, would be enough to satisfy the pre-requisites listed.

Any circumstances not directly satisfied by specific course completion should be reviewed and approved by the instructor, copying the DrPH Program Director.

All core courses are offered through a remote learning format with some elements incorporated in the on-campus “Burst Weeks”.  Electives can be delivered in-person or remotely depending on the course so students should consider this when selecting their elective courses.

Program Director

Beginning prior to admission, and with the assistance of the Program Director, the applicant will explore supervisory possibilities: a faculty member with an appointment in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health who has a Full appointment in the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). The faculty supervisor may be confirmed prior to beginning the program, and generally will be in place by the end of the first year.  Students are encouraged to explore broadly and have wide-ranging discussions with potential supervisors. The Program Director must approve the selection of the primary supervisor.

The Supervisor is responsible for providing mentorship to the student through all phases of the PhD program. Thus, to the extent possible, the Supervisor, in parallel with the Program Director, will guide the selection of courses, applied research project, supervisory committee membership, and supervisory committee meetings; will assist with applications for funding; and will provide references for the student on a timely basis. The Supervisor also will comment on the student’s plan for preparation for the comprehensive examination. The Supervisor will guide the development of the student’s applied research project, and the implementation and conduct of all aspects of the research; advise on writing the thesis; correct drafts and approve the final thesis; and attend the defense.

Advice on working with your supervisor

The DrPH program was designed with the understanding that many students will be in or approaching mid-career. It is crucial that time commitments be pre-discussed to insure a smooth balance. Supervisory Committee

With the assistance of the Supervisor, and with the approval of the Program Director, the student will assemble a Supervisory Committee within the first year of study.

Role and Responsibilities

The Supervisory Committee, chaired by the Supervisor, will contribute advice regarding course selection; preparation for the comprehensive examination; selection of the thesis topic; and implementation of the research plan. The Supervisory Committee also will provide timely and constructive criticism and guidance regarding data analysis, writing the thesis, and preparing for its defense.

Composition

The Supervisory Committee generally will comprise the Supervisor and at least two members. Supervisors must hold Full appointments in the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and have a primary appointment in DLSPH. Committee members may hold either Full of Associate SGS appointments and may or may not hold a primary appointment in DLSPH. Between these individuals and the Supervisor, there should be expertise in all content and methodological areas relevant to the student’s applied research focus and thesis.

Supervisory Committee meetings will be held at least every twelve (12) months throughout the student’s DrPH program. Under certain circumstances (e.g., during times of very rapid progress), the student and the Supervisory Committee may decide there is a need for more frequent meetings.

At the end of every meeting of the Supervisory Committee, the student and the Committee will complete the Supervisory Committee Meeting Report . All present must sign the report, which will be delivered to the Program Director and filed in the student’s progress file in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences.

Applied Research Project

The DrPH Applied Research Project is regarded as a key applied learning experience aimed at supporting skills development and ideally leading to the DrPH Dissertation.

It will involve a 16 week practical experience over the summer between the first and second year of study.  The project should be based in a relevant public health system organization, which will be endorsed by the DrPH Program Director and your supervisor, and will address a complex challenge for which the student will conduct a critical review of the literature, identify gaps and weaknesses in current knowledge, and aim to recommend appropriate solutions or strategies for resolution.

Some students may choose to address an issue in their current work organization. Others may choose from a variety of organizations available to students with the assistance of the faculty and community leaders.

All projects will establish objectives within the  SMART  evaluation framework which will be reviewed Week 4, Week 10, and at end of project. The student is responsible for scheduling these reviews with supervisor and Program Director.

Comprehensive Exam

Completion of the exam indicates the student’s preparedness and competency to successfully complete and defend their thesis by testing the student’s knowledge and understanding of relevant theories and methods as they apply to a field-oriented challenge. Students receive preparation for this comprehensive exam through coursework and their applied research project. Consequently, students will only take this examination when most of their course work is completed.

The comprehensive examination is a take-home written exam in the form of a major paper related to a field-oriented challenge. The comprehensive examination tests for depth and breadth of discipline specific knowledge, ability to apply knowledge to address a complex problem (via a field-oriented challenge), and the ability to implement appropriate actions/interventions. This culminating assessment helps assure that students have achieved all program learning outcomes and degree level expectations upon graduation.

The thesis is an independent piece of work on an applied research topic of significance to the practice of public health within or outside of Canada. It demonstrates the student’s ability to produce original applied research, or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, and to merit publication. It focuses on generating new translational knowledge and creating value for a public health change.

Students will engage with the literature and practice-based experiences to identify a problem and provide new learning on implementing public health change. In other words, the thesis should demonstrate the student’s mastery of the skills and knowledge to lead or create substantial change in programming or policy development or develop new methods or strategies to accomplish either of these two goals.

The thesis will consist of the following elements:

• Preparation and submission of a final thesis documenting a critical literature review, analysis of the proposed topic, proposed research question(s), methodologies, findings, and implications for policy and practice.
• Submission of tracked leadership log and journaling of field experiences, as well as a leadership change plan outlining how the recommendations from the project will be put into practice.

School of Graduate Studies Final Oral Exam (FOE)

Arrangements for the Final Oral Defense and for the preparation of the final thesis are given at length in the SGS Calendar . The dissertation and the necessary documents must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the oral exam. See the Graduate Department of Public Health Science academic policies for forms and information for thesis preparation.

Please note that this is a self-funded program. We encourage all our applicants to ensure financial readiness before applying. Tuition fees can be found on the U of T Tuition Fee Lookup Tool . In addition to annual tuition, admitted students will be assessed for non-academic incidental fees for each registered academic session. With the exception of approved leaves of absence, all doctoral students must register continuously until all degree requirements have been fulfilled. While the DrPH degree program is described as a 4-year program, students who must register beyond year 4 to complete program requirements continue to pay full-time fees for each academic session in which they are registered.

Students planning to continue their employment during their program are advised to consult with their employer regarding potential financial and non-financial supports as part of their financial preparations. DrPH students are registered as full-time students. In rare cases, and depending on their employment situation, a student may be eligible for funding from one of the  Tri-Agency  bodies (e.g., CIHR or SSHRC). DrPH students may also apply to the  Ontario Graduate Scholarship  (OGS).

• Is the DrPH program considered a remote program? The University of Toronto does not offer fully remote doctorate degrees. As a professional degree; however, the program is designed with maximum flexibility for the student cohort to manage several responsibilities concurrently. For example, the core DrPH required courses are offered as online or hybrid. As the DrPH program was launched during the global COVID-19 pandemic, several modifications to the courses allowed successful implementation, some that will carry on post-pandemic as they proved to be both efficient and effective. As on-campus activities have resumed, so have the in-person sessions of hybrid courses and the on-campus “Burst Week” sessions (described below). As personal interaction with your fellow students, faculty, and community public health leaders is an important element of the educational process, three on-campus “Burst Weeks” are held in September, April, and January. These weeks will incorporate the in-class portions of the hybrid courses, various skill forums (e.g., media training) , cohort thinktanks, and a variety of faculty and community public health leader interactions. Important to consider is most courses at the DLSPH are offered in-person or hybrid. Thus, student’s selection of a required methods course and the free choice elective courses may not be offered remotely and the student will be responsible to organize  course selection based on their needs, i.e., optimal elective courses for a particular student’s need may be only offered in person.
• Can you provide additional Information on the DrPH Applied Research Project ? The initial cohort experience will be utilized to inform the future direction of the applied research project; thus, you are encouraged to keep a frequent dialogue with the Director. Forms with examples of projects and scheduled Q&A Roundtable will be available during the Fall 2021 Term.
• When will a formal list of classes be posted for the upcoming academic session? Course timetables for Fall/Winter are posted in mid-July with enrolment opening mid-August.  The Summer timetable is posted in March.  Please visit the Timetables webpage.
• As a professional degree program, what advice can you offer as I discuss commitments with my work supervisor? The DrPH program was designed with the understanding that many students will be in or approaching mid-career. It is crucial that time commitments be pre-discussed to insure a smooth balance. It is understood that detailed time requirements are needed for this discussion. Please refer to the course requirements as a basis for this commitment. It is important to review all prerequisites when planning your course of study. For example,

HAD5778H required in Year 2 has prerequisites of HAD5011H or CHL5300H HAD5765H required in Year 3 or 4 requires HAD5011H or equivalent

When pre-requisites are listed, they normally indicate DLSPH courses (PHS or IHPME), but equivalent courses taken elsewhere would be considered since most DrPH students would not have completed PHS/IHPME courses during their Master Degree program, if completed elsewhere. Also, prerequisites may also be ratified with work experience.

Example: One DrPH student completed an MPH at University of Waterloo where it is likely that equivalent courses were completed. That, along with work experience, would be enough to satisfy the pre-requisites listed.

Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral program

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral (CGS D) program is to promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.

The Canada Graduate Scholarships — Doctoral (CGS D) program is a federal program of scholarships administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Scholarships are awarded through national competitions by these three granting agencies.

The CGS D program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of natural sciences and engineering, health and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. This support allows scholars to concentrate on their doctoral studies more fully, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and to contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.

In addition to the CGS D, each agency has its own doctoral awards.

For all three agencies, only one application must be completed and submitted to be considered for both a CGS D award and either an agency-specific doctoral award (for NSERC/SSHRC applications) or any available doctoral Priority Announcements (for CIHR applications). CGS D awards are then offered for the top-ranked eligible applications in each agency’s competition.

Some eligibility requirements for CGS D differ from those of the agency-specific doctoral awards. Refer to the appropriate literature for NSERC , CIHR and SSHRC for further details as well as information on doctoral awards tenable at foreign institutions.

To be eligible to apply, you must

• be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), as of the application deadline
• have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in your doctoral program or the PhD portion of your joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (such as MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD) by December 31 of the calendar year of application if previously enrolled in a graduate program
• direct-entry applicants must be enrolled in their doctoral program at the time of application
• if you have not previously completed or enrolled in another graduate program, you must be enrolled in your joint MD/PhD program at the time of application
• if you fall into this category, you have access to the 36-month window whether or not you were previously enrolled in a master’s program

Note: If you are eligible to apply to the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program, you may be able to maximize your potential period of funding by applying to the CGS M program for your first year of doctoral funding instead of the CGS D program. You are responsible for choosing the type of award for which you apply. See Other restrictions below for more information.

Number of months

Eligibility for CGS D is based on the number of months of full-time study, including summer months, toward the degree for which you are requesting funding by December 31 of the calendar year of application . Two terms of part-time study count as one term of full-time study.

Note: The agencies count all studies toward the doctoral degree for which funding is requested, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution.

Fast-track and joint programs

Fast-track: If you were registered in a master’s program and subsequently transferred to a doctoral program (fast-track), the months of study completed are calculated starting from the date on which you transferred into the doctoral program.

Joint programs: If you are registered in a joint program and a master’s degree is obtained as part of the program (for example, MA/PhD, MSc/PhD), the months of study are calculated starting from the date on which you are officially registered in the joint program (including the master’s portion of the program).

If you are registered in a joint professional undergraduate/PhD program (such as MD/PhD, JD/PhD, DVM/PhD), only the months of study in the PhD portion will be counted.

Other restrictions

• You can submit a maximum of one scholarship or fellowship application per academic year to either NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC. Should more than one application be submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained. Nominations to the Vanier CGS program and applications to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program do not count toward this limit (other exceptions may apply to CIHR internships)
• You cannot have already received a doctoral-level scholarship from NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC (does not apply to CIHR Fellowships)
• You cannot hold a tenure or tenure-track appointment concurrently with your CGS D award

An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.

Joint programs with a professional degree (for example, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) as well as clinically oriented programs of study , including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component as described above.

Selecting the appropriate agency

You should complete the agency application that is best aligned with your research subject matter to ensure that it is reviewed by experts in disciplines closest to your field(s) of study. For more information refer to Selecting the appropriate federal granting agency .

Incomplete applications may be rejected from the competition.

Where to submit an application

You must apply either through a Canadian institution or directly to the appropriate agency depending on your registration status at the application deadline date and/or your registration status in the calendar year of application. Failure to submit an application through the correct channel will result in your application being rejected .

To determine the correct channel, you must

• determine if an institution has a quota for your selected agency
• refer to the chart and supporting information in the Where should I submit my application? flowchart

If you are unsure of your registration status in the calendar year of application, contact your faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent).

The term “quota” refers to the maximum number of applications an institution can forward to each agency’s national competition. Institutions receive separate quotas from each agency ( NSERC , CIHR and SSHRC ).

Institution deadlines

If you are applying through an institution, you must submit your application by the deadline set by the institution, which may be well in advance of the agency deadline.

Agency deadlines

If you are eligible to apply directly to one of the agencies (consult the Where should I submit my application? flowchart), you must submit your application using the appropriate agency application portal before 8:00 p.m. (ET) on October 17. If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted the following business day before 8:00 p.m. (ET). Incomplete applications may be rejected.

Institutional review

The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each Canadian institution is responsible for coordinating the institutional evaluation of CGS D applications. Institutions then submit applications according to their quotas for consideration to each agency.

Agency review

Agency selection committees review applications (whether sent directly to the agencies or via the institutions).

Institutions may recommend applications from self-identified Indigenous student researchers to the doctoral awards competition beyond their application quota. Self-identified Indigenous student researchers must agree to their personal information being used for this purpose by making the appropriate selection in the application form.

The Government of Canada has deployed additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers . CGS D applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent to be considered for funds targeted towards specific groups may be selected to receive this funding. Each agency has a limited number of additional CGS D awards reserved for this initiative.

The evaluation of CGS D applications, whether by institutions or the agencies, is based on the following criteria:

In 2019, NSERC, CIHR and SSHRC, along with other Canadian research funding agencies, signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) . The agencies are committed to meaningful assessment of excellence in research funding and to ensuring that a wide range of research results and outcomes are considered and valued as part of the assessment process. They will continue work to ensure that their strategies, policies and guidance align with DORA.

Applicants whose applications were submitted to the agencies, whether directly or via their institution, will be notified of results by April 30.

The agencies will publish the names (and other basic award information) of scholarship recipients on their respective websites.

6 Canadian PhD scholarships for international students in 2022

There are many excellent countries for international students wishing to pursue their PhD studies on a scholarship. Canada is one of them – it has been voted the most attractive study destination by agents in the 2021 survey , thanks to how well the Trudeau administration took care of international students at the height of the pandemic last year.

Canada is well-known for being a safe, stable, open and welcoming country as well. In the same 2021 survey, Canada emerged as tops for safety and openness – factors that are critical to all migrants seeking a life in a foreign land, especially for international students.

Understandably, a PhD can involve great costs since it takes on average three to four years to complete; if you are an international student, from a country with less global spending power, living and travel costs, will add up too.

Fortunately, Canada has several scholarships that can help alleviate these, offered by provinces and universities alike – both provincial and university-specific ones. We round up a list of six Canadian PhD scholarships to help you start your application for the 2022 academic year.

Ontario Trillium Scholarship – Western University

The Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS) aims to attract outstanding candidates to come to Ontario for their PhD studies. Particularly, if you want to apply to Western University , you should express your interest to the graduate programme chair (Director or Associate Dean) of your admitting programme in order to be nominated for the OTS.

To be eligible for applying, you should be an international student, be willing to be physically present at the university at the time of studies, is not registered with any other Canadian institution, have an excellent academic record and research experience, and need to have achieved a minimum of 80% in two of your most recent years of full-time study. You may be required to demonstrate English language proficiency as well.

Successful applicants starting their PhD programme will get 40,000 Canadian dollars each year, which can be renewed for up to four years.

University of Alberta

Next on the list of Canadian PhD scholarships is the University of Alberta Graduate Entrance scholarship . Located in Alberta, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at  University of Alberta disburses around CA$26 million in scholarships every year. 

If you plan to register for doctoral studies at the University of Alberta, you are eligible for this one-off Graduate Entrance scholarship worth CA$21,000. This may commence either on Jan. 1 or Sep. 1, and cannot be renewed at all.

You are allowed to hold any number of University of Alberta awards concurrently with this scholarship but not the Tri-Council Top-up awards at the same time. Examples include the Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship and President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction and the Graduate Entrance 14 Scholarship tuition fee top up at the same time.

University of Montreal

The third Canadian PhD scholarship offering is administered by the University of Montreal in Quebec. Ranked 88th in the world (Times Higher Education ranking 2022) and fourth in Canada for volume of research activities, this university attracts over 45,000 students out of which 8,500 are international.

In addition to the Doctoral Scholarship (CA$7,000 – renewable once, for students who have done their master’s degree at this university), you can apply for the Mackenzie King Scholarship (CA$8,500 for one year – application deadline is Feb. 1, 2022). You can submit an application for the University of Montreal exemption grant (ranging from CA$ 2,078.10 to CA$12,465.60 depending on your academic record, no separate application needed) as well.

University of British Columbia

One of the top 20 public universities in the world, the University of British Columbia is ranking 37th by the Times Higher Education rankings 2022, and one of three Canadian universities to make it to the top 50. Over 56,000 students study at the University’s two campuses in the Okanagan Valley and Vancouver.

For students wanting to do a PhD at this University, the Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) is an outstanding choice. You will receive CA$18,200 as your annual stipend, and full tuition coverage for up to four years of your PhD studies.

You can apply to your preferred Graduate Programme; all PhD applicants are qualified to apply for this Scholarship. Upon selecting the best applicants, the Graduate Programme will inform Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies about their choices.

University of Lethbridge

Located in Southern Alberta, the University of Lethbridge is one of Canada’s top three research universities, a record they have held for the past four consecutive years. The University is ranked among the 6% of world universities for research performance as well.

That is why the University of Lethbridge Graduate Research Award has been designed for incoming graduate applicants of all disciplines except Education. With a value up to CA$21,000, you can combine this Award with the Graduate Assistantship and/or any Research Stipend provided by a Faculty Member, but not with other scholarships such as the Dean’s Scholarship.

University of Windsor

The University of Windsor is the final university on this list of Canadian PhD scholarships. As a comprehensive university located in Canada’s southernmost city overlooking the Detroit River, the University of Windsor offers their 16,000 students a wide variety of courses.

PhD applicants can apply for the Graduate Entrance Scholarship worth CA$7,500 for up to four years. This Scholarship has three application deadlines: the first day of January, May and September – you must have achieved a minimum of 80% average as well.

Other awards for international PhD applicants include the Ontario Graduate Scholarship . Depending on how many months you have completed your PhD studies at the time of application, you may receive up to CA$15,000 (three terms of CA$5,000 each) of funding – the application deadline is Jan. 12, 2022.

All in all, these are great Canadian PhD scholarships if you are an international student looking to start your PhD studies in safe and stable Canada in 2022.

Graduate program options

In virtually every field of academic study, Canadian universities offer graduate degree programs.

• Master’s degrees require 1 or 2 years of study after completing your bachelor’s degree. In Canada, your master’s studies can include a thesis, practicum, research paper or a course‑based program.

PhD in applied economics

Our PhD program offers students a strong foundation in economic theory and econometrics, as well as the opportunity to conduct original research alongside world-renowned scholars.

We provide training in the areas of public policy, labour economics, macro-economics, monetary economics, econometrics, natural resources, environmental and health economics. We believe in an ‘open-door’ atmosphere which engages and stimulates graduate students in their chosen paths of research.

Through our rigorous academic programs and applied research experience, students develop their communication and analytical skills and are prepared for a career in academia or the private sector upon graduation.

PhD students receive $104,000 over 12 on-campus terms, and have the opportunity to work as research and teaching assistants. For students wishing to advance their teaching skills, we also have a limited number of course instructor positions available.

Data access

Students can access the Southwestern Ontario Research Data Centre (SWORDC), one the few data centres that provides access to Statistics Canada data sets in master file form. SWORDC is conveniently housed in the PAS building adjacent to Economics in Hagey Hall.

Next in my series on  How To Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list below of PhD programs in Public Health that offer full funding to all admitted doctoral students.

Although there are many competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, the best approach to funding your doctoral studies is to seek out PhD programs that offer full funding to all admitted students. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide “full funding” to their Ph.D. students, in most cases this means they provide students full tuition and an annual stipend for living expenses for the three to the six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Columbia University, PhD in Environmental Health Sciences

(New York, NY): All PhD students receive full tuition, a stipend, and health insurance coverage. The amount of the stipend is set by Columbia University. Support is provided throughout the entire five years the student is in the program.

Harvard University, PhD in Biological Sciences in Public Health

(Cambridge, MA): All admitted students to the PhD Program in Biological Sciences in Public Health, including international students, are guaranteed full funding, which includes a stipend, as well as tuition and health insurance.

Indiana University-Purdue University, PhD in Health Policy and Management

(Indianapolis, IN): For full-time students only, the program will typically provide funding support in the form of tuition remission, a stipend to cover living expenses, and health insurance. This support typically requires a 20-hour-per-week work assignment.

University of Michigan, PhD in Public Health

(Ann Arbor, MI): Many doctoral students at Michigan Public Health are fully funded. All students admitted to one of our doctoral programs are considered for financial support. There are four types of financial support offered to students: graduate student instructor (GSI) positions, graduate student research assistant (GSRA) positions, training grants, and fellowships.

University of Toronto, PhD in Public Health

(Toronto, Canada): The University of Toronto has committed to a guaranteed minimum level of financial support to all its eligible, full-time doctoral stream students in the funded cohort, equivalent to $15,000 per year plus tuition for the first 5 years of study.

Yale University, PhD in Public Health

(New Haven, CT): All admitted PhD students are guaranteed four years of 12-month stipend and tuition support. In addition to grants and fellowships for tuition and living costs, students receive a Health Award, which covers the full cost of single-student Yale Health Plan Hospitalization/Specialty Coverage. (Providence, Rhode Island): Admitted doctoral students receive up to five years of guaranteed financial support through Brown’s Five-Year Guarantee. Financial support includes a stipend, tuition remission, a health services fee, and health and dental insurance subsidies as well as four summers of support. This financial support applies to domestic and foreign students.

Johns Hopkins University, PhD in Public Health

(Baltimore, Maryland): All full-time PhD students receive support for all years of the program. Funding includes full tuition and fees, health insurance, and a stipend for living expenses for students who remain in good academic standing. PhD students are required to serve as teaching assistants.

New York University, PhD in Public Health

(New York, NY): Students who are admitted to the program will be fully funded by a fellowship or a combination of fellowship and Research Assistantship for five years. During fellowship years, students will engage with their mentors and develop their scholarships and portfolio.

Pennsylvania State University, PhD in Health Policy and Administration

(University Park, PA): Students entering the Health Policy and Administration doctoral program are funded through graduate assistantships and have opportunities for additional funding.

Texas A&M University, PhD in Health Services Research

(College Station, TX): All graduate students offered assistantships must complete human resources and other training modules before they are processed into the payroll system. Total compensation for both types of assistantships includes a monthly salary of $2,008 plus payment of tuition and fees to cover the minimum enrollment requirement.

University of South Carolina, PhD in Public Health

(Columbia, SC): All PhD students are offered an assistantship for 3 or 4 years, in-state tuition, a minimum stipend of $5,000-$6,000 / semester, minimum $15,000 tuition supplement over three years, In addition, doctoral applicants are eligible for some competitive fellowships.

Boston University, PhD in Public Health

(Boston, Massachusetts): Students admitted to the Ph.D. program as full-time students will receive four to five years of financial aid in the form of fellowship or assistantship support. The financial-aid package will consist of a stipend as well as a scholarship to cover tuition, mandatory fees, and individual basic health insurance.

Oregon State University, PhD in Public Health

(Corvallis, OR): Most public health doctoral students are funded through teaching or graduate research assistantships, which include tuition remission and a stipend. Others are funded through scholarships and fellowships.

University of Florida Health, PhD in Public Health

(Gainesville, FL): Students are only accepted to our Ph.D. program if the department can provide a stipend and tuition waiver. Funding for Ph.D. students may come from intramural (fellowships, department funds, etc) or extramural (Grants) sources.

University of North Texas Health Science Center, PhD in Public Health Sciences

(Fort Worth, Texas): All students admitted to the Ph.D. program are provided a financial support package that includes four fully funded years of tuition & fees, a living stipend currently valued at $30,000 annually, and health insurance.

Vanderbilt University Fully Funded PhD in Epidemiology

Vanderbilt University, based in Nashville, Tennessee offers a fully funded PhD in Epidemiology. Upon completing the Doctoral Program in Epidemiology, graduates will be prepared to develop an independent research portfolio in academia, research, or industry. All students offered admission to the doctoral program in Epidemiology receive a full tuition scholarship, stipend, health insurance, and coverage of fees. All students, both domestic and foreign, receive the same financial support. The stipend rate is $36,500 annually.

Washington University, PhD in Public Health Sciences

(St. Louis, MO): They are dedicated to providing our doctoral students with full-tuition scholarships, four-year stipends, and professional development accounts. Base stipends for students are $30,000 per year, and additional funding is possible through paid research, teaching fellowships, and other internal and external support sources.

University of California Berkeley, PhD in Public Health

(Berkeley, CA): Doctoral students (PhD and DrPH) typically receive funding by soft-money grants, such as working as a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) or teaching as a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). Both options not only cover a fee remission but also provide a monthly stipend.

Our Funding Commitment

All students will be provided with a five-year funding package totalling $164,000 with a minimum of $33,000 per year for the first four years in the PhD Program. Funding is conditional upon meeting the progression requirements and may come from a variety of sources, including internal and external scholarships, funding from research grants, and, in years two through five, Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA),  Graduate Student Assistantships (GSA) or teaching.

We also offer our students $8,000 over the course of their PhD career to present their research or serve as discussants at eligible conferences, and an additional $3,000 to help defray expenses related to their thesis research.

There are various other funds linked to our Centres and Institutes that may also be available, and many students successfully apply for other scholarships such as Ontario Graduate Scholarships  and  SSHRC Fellowships . In addition, individual donors, businesses, and organizations have generously committed to further investing in our students through a variety of scholarships:

Tuition and Fees

All PhD students must register and pay tuition and fees three times during the academic year (September, January and May). Tuition is set by Western University and is subject to change each year.

Universal Youth Leadership Summit 2024 in Malaysia (100 Seats)

Buckle up! The Universal Youth Movement (UYM) is pleased to announce the applications for the Universal Youth Leadership Summit 2024 in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur . It is a three -day event that will run from the 21st to 23rd November 2024. There are a total of 100 seats which are divided into Fully Funded, Partially Funded, and self-funded. By attending the summit you will truly develop your leadership skills and confidence, discover your passions, and build your network.

The program is aimed to engage youths and give them a deeper understanding of global issues. The summit will also talk about the importance of sustainable education and the issue of youth employability in the communities. Anyone from any country can apply. Participants in any academic field are eligible. IELTS is not required .
