Evernote  is normally thought of as just note-taking software, but it does provide the option to create a presentation you can share online or with an audience. In that regard, it's a little more limited than the other options in not being dedicated presentation software. However, as an easy and handy way to pull together a presentation quickly, it could serve as a backup or last-minute option, especially if Evernote is already being commonly used by you.

LibreOffice Impress  is part of the open-source suite offered as a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and comes with a powerful array of tools and editing options for your presentation, not least working with 3D images. 10 things you should have in your presentation kit

A good presenter has a mental bag of tricks to rely on. In fact, the presenter is the presentation. Add a powerful visual element, such as a PowerPoint show, and you can’t go wrong… until something goes wrong. A presentation kit with most of the following items could help you quickly recover from or even avert a disaster. ( Note : This article about the 10 things you should have in your presentation kit is available as a free PDF download .)

1: The presentation accessories

Many things you’ll want in your kit are specific to the presentation at hand. The following items belong on your checklist, even though the tangibles will change with each presentation:

  • Handouts for the audience
  • A printout of your presentation and notes using large fonts (for you)
  • A backup copy of the presentation on CD or thumb drive
  • A map of the conference room and your layout design
  • Evaluation forms
  • Contact information for the site’s technical support personnel

2: The equipment

Your laptop is an obvious choice, but a few other vital pieces of equipment might be easy to forget. Be sure to pack the following:

  • Projector and replacement bulb
  • Mouse and mouse pad
  • Remote (the ones with the built-in laser pointer are nice)
  • Headphones (if you use them)
  • Appropriate cables, including a dual mini plug if you use a boom box for sound (#9)
  • Video adapter (many projectors want VGA) if your laptop doesn’t output VGA

Most conference facilities will supply some or all of these items, but working with your own equipment has its advantages: You’ll be more at ease with your own equipment and you’ll be able to quickly troubleshoot most problems. Also consider the addition of a portable screen. A blank wall works in a pinch, but it isn’t the best way to present yourself, your product, or your company.

3: Electrical access

One extension cord is probably enough if you also have a power strip (carry at least one). The cord’s length is up to you, but the longer the better. Just be prepared to secure it (#5) and stow the coiled up excess in a safe spot, perhaps under your table or on a podium shelf. Also carry a plug adaptor; older buildings still have two-prong outlets.

4: A battery of batteries

Carry a second battery for your laptop, even if yours is new and promises a long life. (They all do.) The day you don’t have the extra is the day your battery will die and an electrical source won’t be handy. Better yet, invest in a universal power supply; they’re cheap and getting smaller and lighter.

You’ll also want an extra set or two of batteries for every battery-powered device you use. Take inventory and have plenty of extras on hand. If your client or conference room staff agrees to supply these devices, ask if they also supply fresh batteries.

5: Duct tape

You can purchase duct tape in travel-size rolls. At the very least, you should secure electrical cords in high-traffic areas. Don’t forget your own small space either. Tripping on a cord in the middle of a presentation is embarrassing and could displace equipment or even bring the presentation to a halt while you replug, reboot, and regroup.

6: Rubber doorstop

Always stash a rubber doorstop in your kit. Projectors are notorious for being uneven and wobbly. A doorstop will quickly put things right and steady.

7: Portable timer

Most monitors display the time, but it’s a small indicator and not easy to see from a distance. If it’s critical that you stay on track to accommodate time restrictions, use a portable timer — something with a large display but that’s otherwise discreet.

8: Security cable

Consider using a security cable to protect your laptop if you know you’ll be in and out of the conference room. A cable won’t stop a truly determined thief, but it’ll slow one down.

9: Sound equipment

Sound files will usually feed directly into the room’s sound system. If not, consider external speakers. The larger the room the more powerful the speakers should be. Nowadays, you can purchase small speakers with a lot of power without spending a lot of money. A boom box with auxiliary input might also do the trick. You’ll need a cable with mini plugs on both ends; plug one end into the headphone jack on your laptop and the other into the auxiliary jack in the boom box. (Not all boom boxes have an auxiliary jack.)

10: Bottled water

This last one sounds a bit contrived: You can get water anywhere, can’t you? Usually, you can. But if you can’t, you’ll be miserable. Put a couple of sealed bottles in your kit. If you don’t have access to water, you’ll have a backup, and any headache will be the result of thunderous applause and not dehydration!

What Is the Best Wireless Presentation Technology for Screen Sharing?

Unraveling the tradeoffs between buttons, wifi, chromecast, and airplay to save time in a meeting room.

Wireless presentation systems enable you to connect to a display from anywhere in the room – without a cable. But with over 40 different systems on the market, trying to find the best screen mirroring solution for your situation and budget can be a challenge. To start, it helps to understand the different types of wireless presentation system technologies before deciding on a particular model. Based on the data from Futuresource, there are three major types of wireless presentation systems used in meeting rooms and classrooms in North America. These are:

Dedicated Hardware Systems

Hybrid systems that use wifi networks, standardized screen mirroring protocol receivers.

This article will take a look at each type of system, its advantages, and disadvantages to help you decide how to make your meeting room or classroom more effective and enable anyone to connect to a shared display without a cable.

How Does It Work?

Wireless presentation systems using button transmitters have dominated the screen mirroring market for businesses looking to improve meeting efficiency and eliminate cables. The concept is simple –  simply plug in a button to your notebook or other devices – and tap it to connect to the display .

These systems consist of a transmitter (also referred to as a button) that connects to the user’s device & a receiver connected to a display. The transmitter encodes all the data and sends it over to the receiver. The receiver then decodes the data and shows it on a display. These are standalone devices that do not depend on corporate Wi-Fi to send the signal making it easy for company guests to join in the meeting .

There are three distinct advantages to this approach.

Faster Connection for More Efficient Meetings

Plugging in a button is simple, doesn’t require instructions or a network log-in - and can get you connected to a screen in under 10 seconds. This helps meetings stay on time – a critical factor when Toyota was selecting their system .

Highest Level of Security

Button transmitters don’t need to use your network, so IT managers don’t have to set up guest networks or worry about network bridging. Plus – each button automatically encrypts the transmissions to make sure no one “listens in” on the presentation .

Support for HDCP content

Some models can support wirelessly transmitting HDCP-protected content directly from a transmitter button. Most other wireless presentation systems don’t support HDCP, making it difficult to use television broadcasts or packaged media to make your point.

The two most popular button-based systems are the Barco ClickShare and the BenQ InstaShow . Together, they accounted for over 55% of all wireless presentation systems sold to corporations in Europe, and over 30% of meeting rooms in North America in 2020.


Button management.

Transmitter buttons are paired with a single receiver, similar to a garage door opener, to ensure content security.  If you want to move a button from one room to another, you will need to pair it to the new receiver before you use it. To keep the table neat and organized, some models come with button holders that sit on the table to keep a meeting moving without making a mess.

The alternative to transmitter buttons is to install a proprietary application on your notebook or phone to transmit the contents of a notebook over a WiFi network to a hardware receiver or “hub” connected to the display. WiFi hub systems typically use the existing corporate network, so the performance of the system can vary depending on factors such as network traffic and priority.

Because these systems rely on the device to run the screen mirroring application, there are no transmitter buttons needed.

Lower Initial Cost

Some models using this approach treat these devices as a software service, lowering the initial costs. But they can be more complex to set up and use and often require annual licensing fees for security updates and bug fixes.

Impact on Network Bandwidth

Transmitting audio and video data through a network requires a lot of bandwidth. For models supporting split-screen presenters at 1080p resolutions at normal frame rates, the bandwidth usage can approach 100 Mbps, potentially impacting the network.  Therefore, the performance of the system is directly related to how much network bandwidth you allocate to the system

Higher Network Security Concerns

Because these systems are designed to use your network, IT managers need to set up these systems carefully and maintain them to ensure that they aren’t used to hack into sensitive information by bad actors.  WiFi-based systems need constant updating to ensure they are not used to bridge into the main network and threaten the system .

Content Security & No HDCP support

While many (but not all) of these systems offer content encryption, this feature can be turned off from the administrator account in many systems– so a guest presenter may not know if their content is unprotected and can be recorded. Also, you can’t wirelessly share copy-protected content on most systems.

Uses a Proprietary Application

For security-conscious organizations such as financial institutions, government, or legal firms, many IT managers require the code to either be certified by a third party to ensure that it is safe to use before allowing it on their network . Apps can also be cloned and redirect sensitive information to a third party. Guests may not have the ability to install an unauthorized app on their device to use the system.

More Complicated Setup

Most WiFi-based wireless presentations systems come with detailed network integration guides that outline all the various servers, I/O ports, and network features that must be added or disabled to work properly.

There are three standardized screen mirroring protocols that are used for screen sharing. Google’s Chromecast , Apple’s AirPlay , and Microsoft Miracast are all designed to enable devices to wirelessly transmit audio and video information from devices like an Apple TV or Chromecast adapter to watch movies on television. Many button-type receivers support one or more of these protocols - but how do they work as a standalone in a meeting room or classroom as a wireless presentation system?

Lowest Initial Cost

Because these are consumer devices, the initial purchase cost is quite low. A Chromecast dongle is under $50, and Apple TVs are $150 compared to a commercial wireless presentations system that typically costs around $1000.

Built-in Support for Certain Devices

If you have a Mac, you can wirelessly stream to an Apple TV without any additional software using the software on your computer or phone. You can also do the same thing on an Android phone with Chromecast, and with a Windows computer on Miracast.

Incompatible Devices

These systems are often designed around a single product ecosystem. While AirPlay works great on a Mac or iPhone, you cannot connect a Windows computer to an Apple TV. Apple products don’t support Miracast.  So while these protocols are helpful, they can struggle as a stand-alone meeting room solution.

Network Bandwidth Usage

Using a Chromecast adapter as a primary screen mirroring solution can quickly consume a significant amount of network bandwidth. For example, many schools started using Chromecast as an inexpensive wireless solution – but found that the network switch could be quickly overwhelmed by having multiple 25Mbps streams on the infrastructure.  There are also risks of port conflicts and other problems that result when using these consumer products on an institutional network.

These devices are not designed for security. Chromecast can use external servers to support streaming sensitive content, and Miracast uses a peer-to-peer network design that may be more vulnerable to network attacks or hacking .

Computer hardware refers to the physical components that make up a computer system.

There are many different kinds of hardware that can be installed inside, and connected to the outside, of a computer.

Computer hardware may sometimes be seen abbreviated as computer hw .

Here are some common individual computer hardware components that you'll often find inside a modern computer. These parts are almost always found inside the computer case , so you won't see them unless you open the computer:

  • Motherboard : The motherboard (also known as a logic board in other devices) coordinates all of the other hardware.
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU ): The CPU interprets and executes most of your computer's commands.
  • Random Access Memory (RAM) : RAM is the memory your computer uses to work; it's different from the storage that holds your files and programs. Your computer spends RAM to run those programs and process information.
  • Power Supply Unit (PSU) : The PSU is the means through which your computer draws power. It's usually a cord that plugs into the wall and a "power brick."
  • Video card : This component handles drawing graphics in games and displaying videos.
  • Hard Disk Drive (HDD) : An HDD is an older version of the hard drive; it stores information like apps and documents on a physical disc that your computer reads with an arm that travels across it (similarly to a record player).
  • Solid-State Drive (SSD) : Newer SSDs store information on chips. They're faster, quieter, and more expensive than HDDs, though both do the same job.
  • Optical disk drive (e.g., BD/DVD/CD drive): This feature is less common in newer computers, but they provide a place to enter a music, movie, or data disk for your computer to read.
  • Card reader (SD/SDHC, CF, etc.): Your computer uses these to read from portable storage like SD cards.

Here is a list of hardware that you might find connected to the outside of a computer, although many tablets, laptops, and netbooks integrate some of these items into their housings:

  • Monitor : This is a display device; it shows you what's on your computer.
  • Keyboard : You use this to enter text into apps and programs.
  • Mouse : The mouse lets you select items on your monitor.
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) : Otherwise known as a battery backup, this optional device lets your computer keep running even when you have an interruption to your main supply.
  • Flash drive : A flash drive is a small temporary storage device that lets you move files from your computer and take them elsewhere.
  • Printer: Printers create hard copies of documents and photos.
  • Speakers: Your computer likely has internal speakers, but external ones can provide a better sound.
  • External hard drive : An external hard drive is like a flash drive, but they're larger and have more storage capacity.
  • Pen tablet: Tablets are good choices for artists and designers. You can "draw" on the screen, and the image will appear in an app.

Less common individual computer hardware devices, either because these pieces are now usually integrated into other devices or because they've been replaced with newer technology:

  • Sound card : The sound card handles audio for your computer, processing and sending it to the speakers.
  • Network Interface Card (NIC ): NICs usually add an Ethernet port that you can use to connect your computer to the internet. They may also provide Wi-Fi access.
  • Expansion card ( FireWire , USB , etc.): These, like NICs, add functionality to your computer. You use them to add more ports to connect things like external hard drives.
  • Hard drive controller card: Also known as a disk controller, this device communicates between internal storage and the CPU.
  • Scanner: A scanner lets you digitize documents and images.
  • Floppy disk drive : CD- and DVD-ROMs replaced floppy drives as ways to read software.

The following hardware is referred to as ​ network hardware , and various pieces are often part of a home or business network:

  • Digital modem (e.g., cable modem, DSL modem, etc.)
  • Router : A router is an important part of a Wi-Fi network. It takes the wired connection from a modem and converts it into a wireless one.
  • Network switch : A network switch also connects to the router and provides multiple Ethernet ports for additional wired connections (for example, to a game console).
  • Access point : A wireless access point is similar to a router; it also transmits a wireless network signal, but it does so without a dedicated modem.
  • Repeater: A repeater, like a wireless extender, expands the range of a Wi-Fi signal.
  • Bridge : You may not have much personal use for a bridge, but in business settings, they link multiple physical networks to cover a wider area.
  • Print server: Print servers manage jobs you've told to print. It's the software that goes between your computer and the printer.
  • Firewall : Firewalls are security elements that stop unauthorized users from accessing your computer.

Network hardware isn't as clearly defined as some other types of computer hardware. For example, many home routers will often act as a combination router, switch, and firewall.

In addition to all the items listed above, there's more computer hardware called  auxiliary hardware , of which a computer might have none, or several, of some kinds:

  • Fan (CPU, GPU, Case, etc.): Fans move hot air from inside your computer case to stop components from overheating.
  • Heat sink: Heat sinks also absorb heat, usually channeling it to a fan to be sent outside the computer.
  • Data cable: These physically transmit information between, for example, a modem and a router.
  • Power cable: This hardware transmits power, typically from a wall socket to a piece of hardware.
  • CMOS battery : These batteries hold a very small amount of information that's necessary to run your computer.
  • Daughterboard: A daughterboard works to expand the functionality of the motherboard; it also works with sound and graphics cards.

Some of the devices listed above are called peripheral devices. A peripheral device is a piece of hardware (whether internal or external) that isn't actually involved in the computer's main function. Examples include a monitor, video card, disc drive, and mouse.

Computer hardware components individually heat up and cool down as they're used and then not used, meaning that eventually , every single one will fail. Some may even fail at the same time.

Fortunately, at least with desktop computers and some laptop and tablet computers, you can replace the non-working piece of hardware without having to replace or rebuild the computer from scratch.

Memory (RAM)

Device Manager

In Microsoft Windows, hardware resources are managed by Device Manager. It's possible that a "faulty" piece of computer hardware is really just in need of a device driver installation or update, or for the device to be enabled in Device Manager.

Hardware devices won't work at all if the device is disabled, or may not be running properly if the wrong driver is installed.

A computer system isn't complete unless there's also software, which is different than hardware. The software is data that's stored electronically, like an operating system or a video editing tool, which runs on the hardware .

Hardware gets its name due to the fact that it's strict when it comes to modifications, whereas software is more flexible (i.e., you can easily upgrade or change software).

Firmware is closely related to hardware and software, too. Firmware is used to tie the two together so that a software program knows how to interface with a piece of hardware.

Despite the growing use of mobile devices, many people still prefer using a laptop for giving their presentations. However, using a laptop nowadays doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to carry a rock on your shoulder. Here is a list of some of the best laptops for presenters to consider.

1. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is all that a presenter can need. The laptop sports an Intel Core i7-7600U vPro processor and Intel HD Graphics 620; it can support up to 16GB RAM and comes in a compact, lightweight size with a 14 inch screen (2560 x 1440 pixels). Since this laptop is an Ultrabook (high-end subnotebook), it offers a long battery life of around 15.5 hrs. Moreover, you can get 80% battery in just an hour of charging.

1TB of disk space ensures that you have more than adequate space for storing your data. Not to mention the laptop weighs just 2.4 pound, making it easier to carry around without straining your back.

It is worth mentioning here that although this Ultrabook has some awesome features, it isn’t the cheapest laptop in the list.

2. Dell XPS 13 (2017)

Available with different processors (Core i3-i7), with 4GB to 16GB RAM capacity, the Dell XPS 13 series offers both portability and power, packed in a single machine. The XPS 13 gives presenters the luxury to opt for the model that best suits their needs and pockets. The available models come with storage capacity between 128GB to 1TB storage on an SSD drive. Furthermore, you can opt for a resolution between 1,920 x 1,080 to 3,200 x 1,800, depending upon the model you choose.

The Dell XPS 13 (2017) is not as expensive as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and comes with more affordable price options, such as the Core i3 and i5 editions of the laptop.

3. Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

The 13 inch Apple MacBook Pro comes with an Intel Core i5 3.1 GHz processor, 16GB of RAM, and an SSD with storage capacity up to 256GB. With a battery life of 10 hrs and an OLED display Touch Bar that offers a number of handy functions with a spell checker and word suggestions, the laptop is well worth the price.

4. Apple MNYH2LL/A MacBook

The Apple MNYH2LL/A 12″ MacBook comes with a combination of an efficient laptop that you can buy with the added advantage of portability and a cheaper price than the 13-inch variant mentioned above. It offers storage on a 256GB, 8GB RAM capacity and runs on an i5 1.2GHz Intel processor.

You can also opt for a slightly more expensive model which provides 512GB disk space and a slightly more efficient version of the dual-core Intel Core i5 Processor. The laptop runs macOS Sierra and gives up to 12 hrs of battery life. Unfortunately, the laptop does not come with an optical drive.

5. Dell Inspiron 11.6″ HD with Anti Glare Touchscreen

With a price just above $300, the Dell Inspiron 11.6 inch laptop with an anti-glare screen can be an affordable option for presenters. The laptop comes with a foldable screen which makes it easier to use. It sports an Intel Celeron N3060 1.6 GHz Processor, with Turbo Boost up to 2.48GHz.

This is more of a hybrid device that comes with tablet-like features but with a more powerful processor. The laptop has a 32 GB emmc, 4GB RAM but no optical drive. It’s for presenters looking for something cheaper with more powerful processing.

The laptop can be bought with a 2GB RAM / 32GB SSD or 4GB RAM / 500GB Hard Drive (HDD).

With a small 11.6 inch screen, an Intel Dual Core Celeron N3050 processor and a price just over $200; the Dell Inspiron i3000-101SLV is for the presenters looking for something affordable that can get the job done.

Thanks for compiling this review. I’d like to point out that the comments regarding the different notebooks are inconsistent. Why is it a problem for number 3/5 that it doesn’t come with an optical drive while it’s not an issue for all the other notebooks in your list? And what kind of reasoning for the price of number 3 is “the laptop is well worth the price.”? What exactly makes this notebook well worth it’s price? In particular, if you compare all the six notebooks on their functionality and connectivity to the outside world, their performance and hardware package, I don’t see how the top three can compete on a price-tag level to the more economic models that you suggested.

Allow me to point out a few details that I hope will answer your question. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and the DELL XPS 13 do have optical drives and are high-end laptops. In fact, the first 3 all can be deemed high-end. 4-6 are more stripped down versions and are hence more affordable. It is also worth mentioning here that you can’t simply compare the battery time of Ultrabooks with netbooks. Similarly, there is also a difference of processor family, the first 2 are 5th-7th generation, so the processing is better, whereas number 5 runs an Intel Celeron Dual Core Processor which can’t compete in performance with I family of processors.

Types Of Cabinet Hardware (And How To Choose What's Right For You)

Kitchens are one of the most complicated, disruptive, and expensive rooms to renovate. According to Bankrate , the average kitchen remodel budget is between $14,608 and $41,275. Besides costing some serious cash, kitchen renos also come with a boatload of decisions. What backsplash tile will go with your counters and flooring? Should you opt for shaker-style door fronts or slab doors? Two-toned cabinets, no uppers, or open shelving ? The list can feel endless, and by the time you get to pick out cabinet hardware, it can be tempting to just grab the first option that catches your eye. 

But here's the thing. A lot hinges on your hardware selection, from how functional your space feels to how cohesive the final result is. These little finishing details can make your design pop or drag it down. Cabinets will typically eat up around 30% of your kitchen renovation budget, so you want to pick hardware that's going to accentuate them. Your hardware also needs to meet your unique needs and be in keeping with the color palette and style of the space.  

Designers often refer to cabinet hardware as the jewelry of kitchens. If you want your space to look seamlessly executed, you need to dedicate some serious thought to knobs and handles. Knobs Are Small And Nifty

Knobs are one of the mainstay types of cabinet hardware, and they come in a massive array of shapes, styles, and sizes. Although they're often used on small cabinet doors and drawers, there's no law that says you can't kit out your entire bank of cabinets with them. However, before you opt for an all-knob look, there are a few factors to consider.

They tend to be cheaper than pulls and simple to install, as you only need one screw. They're also easy to clean and have an approachable look. Depending on what effect you're after, this can be a good thing. But if you want to make a statement with your hardware, knobs might not have enough visual impact. When located on lower cabinets, they can also catch on clothing. With their single screw attachment points, they can come loose more easily than pulls, and on doors that butt together, you might find your fingers can get stuck between the adjacent knobs.

As far as which interior style knobs suit best, the answer depends very much on the individual shape and design you're using. Ornate, intricate knobs will almost always suit more traditional designs, while minimal styles can blend well with a range of interiors, including transitional and even modern spaces. However, compared to a lot of pulls, the majority of knobs do tend to have a more classic feel. If you're after a modern or  contemporary aesthetic for your kitchen, look for sleek, clean shapes, angular options, and current profiles, such as T-knobs, square knobs, and geometric knobs.

Pulls Offer Greater Performance For Larger Drawers And Doors

The other overarching category of cabinet hardware is pulls. As with knobs, you can get your hands on pretty much any style of pull your heart desires, from ultra-angular and minimal to intricate, industrial, and everything in between. As for where to position pulls, you can place them on any cabinet or drawer front, do a mix of pulls and knobs, or opt for all pulls.

Pulls can command a higher price point than knobs, as they require more material. They also need two screws for mounting. But on a practical front, pulls offer a comfy place to grip and are often easier to grab for seniors and those who have arthritis. They also give you more leverage, which is great for heavy drawers laden with pots and tall cabinet doors. Unlike knobs, which only come in a certain size range (there's a limit to how big you can make a knob and still have it be functional), pulls also offer a lot more versatility. Depending on how big your door or drawer is, you can take your pick in pull size and opt for anything between 3 and 24 inches.

A lot of pulls these days have a modern look, but don't think you can't use them in traditional spaces. Ring and pendant pulls, swan neck pulls, and ceramic-handled varieties can all perfectly fit the bill. Most drop-handle pulls definitely fall into the traditional territory. Arch-shaped and bow kitchen handles often suit transitional designs, but their exact shape and level of detail also determine whether they will work in a modern or traditional space. On the whole, T-bar pulls, C-pulls, and very angular shapes are good bets for a modern aesthetic.

Cup Pulls Are A Classic

Cup pulls are technically, well, pulls, but their specific shape and size make them almost like a blend between a knob and a handle. This popular pull dates back to Victorian times, and antique designs often feature intricate patterns and ornate elements. Traditionally, cup pulls appeared on apothecary chests as well as old-fashioned office drawers and bins, which is why they're also known as bin pulls.

One of the biggest benefits of cup pulls is they're great for not catching on clothing. Their rounded profile means no snagging and nothing for your hips (or a child's head) to bump into. If you've ever rammed your thigh into a T-bar pull, this could be a draw. As far as downsides go, bin pulls can be awkward to grip, particularly on drawers that are low to the ground. If you have very large hands, you may find it difficult to fit your fingers into the cup. They're only suited to drawers and won't work well on cabinet doors. 

Even though cup pulls have a long history, they can work for a variety of design styles. Intricate, antique cup pulls could be perfect for a period kitchen. Less ornate, simpler designs lend themselves well to transitional styles and modern farmhouse design . They're also ideal for industrial spaces that have a touch of vintage. However, cup pulls can clash with modern, minimal design schemes . Unless you're looking to throw in a few touches from the past, bin pulls might not hit the mark. 

Nothing As Edgy As Edge Pulls

Mirror, mirror on the wall — who's the most modern pull of them all? If you're looking for an ultra-slick, uber-modern hardware option, edge pulls are it. Attached at the top of cabinets, these minimalist pulls align with the edges of doors and drawers, hence their name. This cuts down on visual busyness while still giving you something to grab onto. If you're a fan of the new, naked, no-hardware look, edge pulls offer a practical middle-ground solution. They won't interrupt the sleekness of your cabinets and drawers, but you also won't handle the corners with (potentially) oily, sticky, or flour-coated hands.

Another advantage of edge pulls is that they screw into the backs of cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This means no holes to mar the finish. If you ever want to move or swap out front-mounted hardware and need to fill holes, this can mean having to refinish all your kitchen cabinets. Edge pulls are also easy to clean, thanks to their linear design.

Speaking of design, edge pulls won't work for every interior. They pair poorly with traditional styles and will only fit if you're intentionally going for a transitional look. But if you're planning a modern, minimal kitchen, or something that's very current and organic, edge pulls could be the perfect finishing touch.

Half-Moon Handles Offer An Organic, Modern Look

Speaking of organic modern, if you're attracted to sparse, simple, yet warm and earthy spaces, half-moon handles are another option to consider. Like edge pulls, half-moon handles are a very current hardware style. As the name suggests, these trendy pulls feature half-round fronts. Typically mounted close to the edge of cabinet doors, semi-circle pulls can be placed at the top of lower cabinets for ease of use, with the straight edge facing upwards. They can also be situated so that the half-rounds sit close together, facing each other, creating a circular shape. Half-moon handles are relatively straightforward to clean, though they are more challenging to buff than standard knobs and handles since you have to get into the tight space underneath. This makes them a little more high-maintenance. 

Although half handles tend to be clean-lined and minimal-looking, they're not severe. Instead, they give off a playful, happy flair. They can also feel quite youthful. However, they're definitely a statement choice, so only opt for them if you want your hardware to be the star of the show. They tend to work well in clean, uncluttered designs, where their unique shape can stand out. 

Drop Pulls Add Old-World Charm

If you're a fan of antique furniture, then you'll probably love drop pulls. Originating in the late 1600s, these traditional pulls have a base plate that holds a hanging handle. Because it can swivel, the handle lies flush with the door but can be pulled upward. Some drop pulls have a single mounting base, from which hangs a small lever, pin, or knob. Others feature two mounting points that hold a curved handle.

Drop handles can add an interesting hardware element and are usually easy to grip and relatively sturdy. However, they are harder to clean and can quickly accumulate grease and grime thanks to the extra parts involved. While they aren't quite as common as other types of pulls, drop handles do come in a variety of styles, ranging from very classic, decorative designs to more modern, clean-lined varieties. If you're decorating a period kitchen, going for a grandmillenial design , experimenting with cottagecore, or refurbishing an antique dresser, the traditional designs could be a perfect choice. However, if you want to dress your cabinets in something a little less period-inspired, there are more streamlined versions. A less detail-oriented drop pull, such as this bronze one from Lowe's , is a great example. These will look great in a transitional or farmhouse kitchen design.

Recessed Pulls Are Perfect For Rocking A Minimal Look

Recessed pulls in the kitchen are a relatively contemporary option, born of the move towards design minimalism. Instead of being mounted on the front of your cabinets, recessed pulls sit within the door or drawer front. This creates a flush exterior surface while giving your hand a recess to grip. Besides modern variations, there are also more retro-style recessed pulls, such as the ones on pocket doors and certain midcentury furniture pieces. 

Because they're seated into the surface of cabinet fronts, recessed pulls won't hook, catch, or snag on anything. They're also simple and easy on the eye, adding very little extra visual detail. If you really don't want your pulls to stand out, you can even opt for cabinet doors that come pre-made with recessed pulls in the same finish.

As far as downsides go, recessed handles are a lot more complicated to install than knobs and regular pulls since you need to carve out a recess for them. These also aren't a feature you can easily swap out. Once you've recessed the pulls, you can't change your mind and install a knob or a T-bar without getting new cabinet fronts. Modern recessed pulls also don't fit a very wide array of design styles. They are inherently contemporary and best suited to minimalist, clean-lined kitchens, or those with a modern  industrial design . If you have a mid-century or vintage-inspired kitchen, you will have to forgo the modern designs and instead choose a more period-appropriate handle, such as one made out of brass. This one from Amazon is a good example.

When Choosing Hardware, Keep Cleaning In Mind

Does your kitchen see a lot of action? If so, ease of cleaning is one of the savviest things to consider before installing cabinet hardware. Kitchen handles and knobs get touched multiple times per day, often by greasy, floury, or sticky hands.

Cabinet hardware can also collect grime and grease from the air, which builds up in the grooves and crevices. Because of this, more intricate, ornate, and detailed hardware tends to get dirty faster and is harder to wipe clean. Any kind of textured surface can become a grime magnet. Very shiny, polished chrome and gold hardware in simple designs is easy to clean—but it collects marks faster than you can say "fingerprint." Matte metal options might be better if you're working in the kitchen a lot or have a couple of kiddos who're at that age where opening and closing cupboard doors hold endless appeal. And if you're a busy baker, you may want to avoid black hardware. Dark colors are great at hiding dirt, but flour will show up starkly on black handles.

Analyze How Much Detail You Want To Add To Your Space

Another factor to keep in mind when picking out hardware is how much detail you want it to add. Hardware can inject a lot of visual oomph into your kitchen design, but you need to evaluate the area as a whole and decide what design job your knobs and handles should play. Maybe you want them to dress up your cabinet doors, add a bold element, or create extra detail to keep things from feeling flat. On the other hand, maybe detailed or attention-grabbing hardware will introduce too much extra visual noise to the space.

It can be tricky to figure this all out by browsing online or just popping into your local hardware store. The best way to truly tell whether or not a particular type of hardware is going to work in your space is by bringing a few home and holding them up against your cabinets. Or even better, get someone else to hold your samples, take a step back, and evaluate the effect. This will also give you a chance to play around with different combinations of knobs and handles. For instance, if you like the idea of going with just knobs in your kitchen, you can test-drive this look. Long drawers should always get two knobs, one on each side. Once you can see the physical knobs against the drawers, you may find the look of this too busy, and end up opting for a long pull instead. There aren't any rock-solid rules when it comes to using knobs or pulls, and this kind of experimentation will help you get a feel for what will work best for your kitchen.  

Think About How The Hardware Feels In Your Hands

Looks aren't the only thing that counts when picking out hardware. Cabinet knobs and handles are something you continually interact with. Therefore, you should evaluate the tactile experience of different options before you commit. Do they feel substantial, silky, smooth, and luxurious? Or rough, cheap, too thin, too thick, or too tacky? Also, think about your unique requirements. If you or someone in the house has large hands, you may want to opt for longer pulls and larger knobs. For instance, if you were contemplating kitting your drawers out with two smaller pulls on either side, it might be more practical and comfortable to install a single 24-inch pull instead. 

Testing out the feel of different hardware choices can only happen in person, which is another good reason to either order or bring home a few different options. While you're holding them against your cabinets, evaluate what the experience will be like when opening and closing doors and drawers with each style of knob or pull. Will your fingers fit comfortably into that cup pull, and will your hand slide easily over the bar of a specific T-pull? If not, it's best to avoid it.

Balance Hardware Size With The Dimenions Of Your Cabinets

The right hardware in relation to door size is one of the subtle things that can set kitchens apart. Interior designers pay particular attention to how the dimensions of the pulls and handles they select relate to the different door styles and dimensions. An easy guide to follow if you're using pulls is to select ones that are roughly one-third of the length of the door or drawer front they're going on.

This might get trickier if you're mixing handles with knobs. While it is a popular option -- and a lot of cabinet hardware collections cater to this -- you need to evaluate whether both the knobs and pulls in the range match your scale before you commit. For instance, you might fall in love with the most gorgeous set of door knobs, only to realize that the drawer handles only come in 3-inch lengths, and you have some super generous pot drawers you want 30-inch pulls for. This will require you to keep looking for a more appropriate set.

Be Finicky About The Finish

If you want a beautifully cohesive kitchen, it's worth being finicky about your finish choice. The tone of your hardware can really sway the final feel of the space, so get granular. The right hue of metal can play up your cabinetry. The wrong finish can clash with it and send mixed design signals. For example, bright gold hardware might be gorgeous, but it's going to look out of place against a shabby-chic door. In this situation, a brushed satin with an intentionally tarnished finish could play perfectly with the lived-in look of the cabinet fronts. Besides matching the overall vibe of your space, the finish should also match the color temperature of the kitchen. If you have warm-toned cabinets, a silvery metal like brushed stainless steel can clash with the color palette.

If you've already picked out other hardware items like your faucet, consider how they will interplay with your cabinet handles. But don't assume that kitchen faucets and hardware have to be the exact same finish. Mixing metals is a hot, designer-approved approach that can help create depth. Just make sure you have some other elements in the same finish so it feels intentional rather than random. They can be the legs of a bar stool, the base of a lamp, or even an appliance.
