Device Turns Off While Vacuuming

The device makes noises and then suddenly turns off.

There may be debris blocking the suction, causing the device to shut off. Check for blockages by disassembling the wand from the roller head and the bin. Check inside and around each component. Be careful of sharp objects and debris. Remove any obstructions.

The filter could be clogged and may need cleaning. Remove the filter by pulling out the purple knob labeled "filter" located at the top of the bin. Rinse the filter by running it under water for 2 minutes. When done, gently shake the filter to remove any debris. Gently wring out the filter to remove excess water. Allow 24 hours for the filter to dry. After a minimum of 24 hours, replace the filter back into the bin and continue with normal use.

The battery may not be fully charged for normal operation. Check the LED light to determine the battery level. A solid blue light indicates that the machine is in normal operating mode. A flashing blue light indicates that there is no power, and the battery needs to be charged for a minimum of 3.5 hours. A flashing yellow light indicates that there is no power or that the battery is too hot or too cold. A flashing red light requires further assistance from the Dyson Helpline .

Battery Life is Too Short

The device does not stay on long enough to complete the vacuuming task.

Snap the bin into place over the cyclone shroud. Close the bin base door so that it clicks secure.

After the bin is cleaned, the cyclone shroud may also need cleaning to ensure normal operation. After removing the bin, use the brush on the combination tool to remove dust and lint from the cyclone shroud. Do not put the cyclone shroud under water. Make sure the bin is completely dry before replacing. Replace the bin with the bin base door open. Snap the bin into place over the cyclone shroud. Close the clear bin base door so that it clicks secure.

Weak Suction Power

The vacuum loses suction while in operation, or the suction is weak.

There may be larger debris blocking the suction from functioning properly. If there are objects blocking the suction, the device will shut off. Check for blockages by disassembling the wand from the roller head and the bin. Check inside and around each one. Be careful of sharp objects and debris. Remove any obstructions.

Unlock the brush bar by using a coin to turn the dial marked with a padlock into the unlock position. Carefully remove the brush bar and remove the debris. If there is a blockage in the flat floor tool, remove debris from the base plate. Unlock the base plate by using a coin to turn the dial marked with a padlock into the unlock position. After cleaning, refit the brush bar. Secure it by using a coin to tighten the dial marked with a padlock so that it is once again in the lock position. even when fully charged the v6 surges in other words suction/ stops, suction/ stops, etc.does this mean I need to get a new battery unit if so where from, is only around 18 months old.

I don’t know if you got an answer for this, but I just solved the same problem. It was a blockage right where it goes into the dust canister. Pulled the blockage out and it went right back to working.

Same thing happened to mine with the off and on rapid occurrence, when the bin is off, clean the screen with a small brush and you will see e inner compartments clogged with dust. Those have to be cleared too by knocking the top and brushing the screen to loosen that inner dust……then your dyson will run smoothly

Why does my Dyson vacuum cleaner keep stopping and starting?

As powerful as Dyson vacuum cleaners are, regularly topping our Best vacuum cleaner and Best cordless vacuum lists, they can run into the occasional problem. One of the most common, particularly with the cordless models such as the Dyson V10, is that they can often keep stopping and starting, not giving you a continuous stream of suction.

If your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps stopping and starting (pulsating), we’ll show you how to diagnose and fix problems on all models. We’re using a cordless cleaner here, although the basic information remains the same for corded models, too.

Power problems

First, make sure your vacuum is properly plugged in, or – in the case of a cordless vacuum – fully charged. Cordless Dysons are small and powerful, but they need to be charged regularly, particularly if using the MAX (extra-powerful) mode, where available.

A flashing light can indicate the vacuum’s battery needs charging. Although, depending on your particular model, flashing lights may also point to a blockage or other problems. Once charged, make sure you unplug the vacuum before trying to turn it on – cordless vacuums don’t tend to work while connected to a power outlet.

It’s also worth remembering that the battery life of any electronic appliance is likely to degrade over time. How fast this happens will depend on your particular model and pattern of usage. If the battery is no longer charging – or lasts only for a few minutes on the regular (not MAX) mode – you may need to replace it.

I had an older model, a Dyson DC35 from around 2012, which wouldn’t run for longer than 20 seconds no matter how much charge it had received. A new battery pack fixed the issue.

Checking for blockages

One of the first things to do when your Dyson vacuum cleaner keeps starting and stopping is to empty the bin. It may be full, or the machine may simply perceive it as too full to continue working. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow through them to work, and a full bin can stop this from happening.

Make sure there’s no dirt lodged in the top part of the bin. You may need to give it a knock or two, or even use a thin blunt object to get rid of all the bits. Next, it’s worth checking for blockages elsewhere within the vacuum – in the stick, or in the wand and the hose for cylinder and upright models. Make sure your machine is switched off and not plugged into a power socket.

Other blockable culprits include any of the tool attachments, particularly motorheads, which can have problems with tangled hair.

Sometimes, it may be necessary to open up the cleaner head. On my Dyson V8 Animal – as with a few other models – this can be done simply by using a coin.

If no visible blockages present themselves, it may be worth cleaning your filters, particularly if you haven’t done so in a while.

How to find your filters

Filters prevent dust from escaping and from making its way into the motor. Since filters are designed to trap dust, it makes sense that they can also block airflow when they’re full of dust. Cleaning a filter rejuvenates your cleaner.

How often you clean your filters will depends on how often you use your vacuum. The official line from Dyson is that with normal use, filters should be cleaned every month. I live in a small flat with wooden floors and a few small rugs, so I tend to clean the filters of my V8 Animal every couple of months.

First, make sure you turn off your vacuum and disconnect it from any power supply. If you have any problems finding the filters, it’s best to refer to your vacuum’s instruction manual. If you no longer have yours to hand, most manuals are also easily available on Google.

Depending on the model, your vacuum may have one or more filters that need cleaning – including both a pre-filter and post-filter. In many Dyson models, the post-filters are HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters, which help to prevent allergens from circulating in your home.

For example, my V8 Animal has both a pre-filter and post-filter, while a Dyson V7 Trigger has only a pre-filter. Meanwhile, the latest Dyson Cyclone V10 models only have one filter – and a handy light indicates when to wash it and when the filter isn’t replaced correctly.

As a general rule, Dyson’s cordless vacuums tend to have a long, narrow removable pre-filter on top of the bin. Remove this by pulling it straight up. The post-filter can be found at the back of the vacuum and can usually be removed by twisting it counter clockwise.

The corded upright and cylinder Dyson vacuum cleaners also have filters that sit above the bin or inside the “ball” part – or both.

The filters are usually purple-bluish in colour. Pre-filters are often shaped like long, soft cones with a plastic circle on top, while post-filters are usually round and encased in hard plastic.

Washing the filters

At first glance, the filters may look clean, even if you haven’t washed them for a while. However, don’t be fooled by appearances – much of the dirt and dust is likely hiding inside the filter, and it will become apparent once you begin rinsing it.

Dyson recommends washing the filters in cold water until it runs clear (without using any detergent or soap). While you should squeeze and twist the long pre-filters to dislodge any dirt inside, you can simply rinse out the post-filter, taking care not to damage the pleats inside.

After washing, the filters need approximately 24 hours to dry. While Dyson advises you not to put the filters in the tumble dryer or in the oven, anywhere slightly higher than room temperature will do nicely.

You may not need the full 24 hours, or you may need a little longer. Just make sure the filters are totally free of dampness when putting them back in the machine, or else you may be left with an unpleasant mildew smell.

If your filter looks particularly worn out or continues to smell strongly even after washing and drying, you may need a new one. When replacing the filters, make sure they’re fitted back in properly as your vacuum cleaner may struggle to operate otherwise.

Buying spare filters and swapping them around regularly during cleans can be a good technique, as your vacuum cleaner is always ready to go and you don’t have to wait for one set of filters to dry.

How to fix your Dyson vacuum cleaner

Dyson handstick vacuum cleaners aren’t cheap (costing as much as $1,000), so you’d hope they’ll last you a while! But like any vacuum, they are prone to problems, with the main one being the loss of suction power over time. But, before you throw your vacuum on the scrapheap and buy a new one, there are ways to help increase the longevity of your beloved cleaning machine to still get your money’s worth! Why is my Dyson vacuum not working properly?

There are a number of reasons why your Dyson vacuum may have suffered a drop in performance levels, including:

• Battery : no matter how long the vacuum is charged for, and despite being hung on the charging dock correctly, your vacuum won’t work for the recommended timeframe if the battery is on the fritz Filters: your vacuum might not turn on if too much dust has accumulated on the filters
• Blockages : your vacuum is fitted with an automatic shut off if a blockage occurs that needs to be cleared

While this guide will specifically look at a Dyson stick vacuum, LG and Samsung models can have similar problems and solutions. The Dyson vacuum itself can provide a diagnostic by observing the light indicator (pictured below). Check your manual – which can also be found online if you’ve misplaced yours – or call the Dyson Customer Care helpline to assist.

Replacing the battery

If you’re charging your vacuum for the recommended amount of time but it only runs for a minute, this doesn’t mean the whole vacuum is a flop – it might just need a new battery. According to reports , Dyson handstick batteries have a life span of just three years on average. Battery replacements cost $76 via the Dyson website, saving you $923 by not running out to buy the new Dyson V10 ($999 RRP).

On a Dyson handstick model, the battery is attached to the handle. The following steps will guide you on how to replace it:

• Ensure the vacuum is unplugged from the charger
• Remove the two screws located on the rear of the handle and three on the underside of the battery
• Take out the old battery and put it aside
• Locate the new battery into the handle
• Secure in place with the existing screws

Washing the filter

If the motor is faulty, the vacuum will appear to be dead. A faulty motor is often caused by another issue such as blocked filters – which can also be the cause of unpleasant smells. You can replace a Dyson filter for $15-$25 (depending on the model), but if it’s fairly new, a quick wash might also do the trick.

It’s suggested to wash the filters every month. The following will explain how to remove and clean your filters:

• Ensure the vacuum is off and unplugged
• To remove the pre-filter, lift it out from the top of the vacuum
• To remove the post-filter, rotate it anti-clockwise until the two solid black dots line up, and pull the post-filter off the back of the vacuum
• Wash both filters with cold water only
• Turn the pre-filter upside down and tap to remove any excess debris
• Run water over the outside of the pre-filter until the water runs clear
• Squeeze and twist with both hands to make sure the excess water is removed
• Take the post-filter and in a similar manner, run water into the open side then tap the filter to remove all debris and repeat the process until the water runs clear

You should leave both filters to dry for at least 24 hours to ensure they’re completely dry before refitting them into the vacuum.

Clearing blockages

Dyson vacuums are fitted with an automatic cut-out if any part of the vacuum becomes blocked. It’s recommended to leave the vacuum to cool down before looking for blockages and then following the steps below:

• Ensure the appliance is disconnected from the charger
• Inspect each part of the vacuum and clear any blockage before restarting
• To gain access to blockages in the floor tool, remove the base plate by using a coin to loosen the screw marked with a padlock
• If you cannot clear an obstruction you may need to remove the brush bars (outlined in the next section)
• Refit all parts securely before using

It’s important you use a dry cloth two clean the appliance – don’t use any lubricants, cleaning agents, polishes or air fresheners.

Cleaning floor tools

The Dyson floor head is equipped with two washable brush bars. If a blockage has occurred because of the brush bars take the next measures:

• Ensure the appliance is disconnected from the charger before removing the brush bar
• Use a coin to turn the fastener to the unlocked position
• Slide out the large brush bar and remove any debris by pulling it off
• Lift out the small brush bar and hold both under running water
• Leave both brush bars upright to dry completely for a minimum of 24 hours
• Once dry, refit the small brush bar before the large one
• Close the fastener by returning it to the lock position

Brush bars should be cleaned regularly to clear away any debris, including hair.

The bottom line

Instead of buying a new vacuum cleaner to replace an expensive one that has stopped working, or even buying a cheap vacuum that might have to be replaced in a year’s time anyway, you can try ways to fix your vacuum instead. If you invest in a quality appliance, it’s likely to have parts that you can replace.

One major advantage of this new era of stick vacuums is that these appliances can often be fixed rather than replaced. Not only could fixing your vacuum save you hundreds of dollars, but it may also just give you the satisfaction of not being a sucker for the latest products available.

While you might not be able to fix every problem, there are a few things you can do to a vacuum that might just revive it for another year.
