On Friday, February 16th, WorldBeat Cultural Center will celebrating Black History Month with a special screening of the “Global Assignment”, a documentary on the life of Dr Runoko Rashidi. We will be joined by the renowned historian, Anthony Browder in collaboration with the Department of Africana Studies of San Diego State University. About the Documentary
A documentary on the life of Dr. Runoko Rashidi our great and beloved elder scholar who traveled the globe searching for the African presence throughout the known world. Runoko Rashidi is an anthropologist and historian with a major focus on what he calls the Global African Presence–that is, Africans outside of Africa before and after enslavement. He is the author or editor of twenty-two books, the most recent of which are My Global Journeys in Search of the African Presence, Assata-Garvey and Me: A Global African Journey for Children in 2017 and The Black Image in Antiquity in 2019. His other works include Black Star: The African Presence in Early Europe, published by Books of Africa in London in November 2011 and African Star over Asia: The Black Presence in the East, published by Books of Africa in London in November 2012 and revised and reprinted in April 2013, Uncovering the African Past: The Ivan Van Sertima Papers, published by Books of Africa in 2015. His other works include the African Presence in Early Asia, co-edited by Dr. Ivan Van Sertima. Four of Runoko’s works have been published in French. As a traveler and researcher Dr. Rashidi has visited 124 countries. As a lecturer and presenter, he has spoken in sixty-seven countries. Runoko has worked with and under some of the most distinguished scholars of the past half-century, including Ivan Van Sertima, John Henrik Clarke, Asa G. Hilliard, Edward Scobie, John G. Jackson, Jan Carew and Yosef ben-Jochannan. Runoko Rashidi’s major mission in life was the uplift of African people, those at home and those abroad. About Anthony Browder
Anthony T. Browder is an author, publisher, cultural historian, artist, and an educational consultant. He is a graduate of Howard University’s College of Fine Arts and has lectured extensively throughout the United States, Africa, Caribbean, Mexico, Japan and Europe, on issues related to African and African American History and Culture.
Mr. Browder is the founder and director of IKG Cultural Resources and has devoted 30 years researching ancient Egyptian history, science, philosophy and culture.
He has traveled to Egypt 54 times since 1980 and is currently director of the ASA Restoration Project , which is funding the excavation and restoration of the 25thdynasty tomb of Karakhamun in Luxor, Egypt.
Browder is the first African American to fund and coordinate an archeological dig in Egypt and has conducted 23 archeological missions to Egypt since 2009.

Global Assignment: The Life and Times of Dr. Runoko Rashidi documented the life of an intrepid chronicler of African people around the world.
Dr. Rashidi traveled to 126 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe. He visited more than 85 museums documenting African cultural contributions before during and after enslavement.
Dr. Rashidi passed in Egypt in 2021 and Global Assignment documents a life well lived.

Global assignment: an evening honoring the work of dr. runoko rashidi.
Join us for an evening honoring the work of Dr. Runoko Rashidi , renowed historian, researcher, and intrepid chronicler of African people studying ancient Egypt. The evening will start with a documentary screening, a talk with author and researcher Anthony T. Browder, followed by a networking reception with light refreshments. All events will take place in the University Library Community Room, LN B131. You can RSVP to the event using the following Google Form .
- 3pm – Documentary Screening of Global Assignment: The Life and Times of Dr. Runoko Rashidi, a 72-minute film that documents the life of Dr. Rashidi as he traveled around the world in search of the global African presence.
- 4:30pm – Honoring the Scholars who Defined Dr. Rashidi’s Global Assignment, by Anthony T. Browder. Mr. Browder will discuss the scholars who shaped Dr. Rashidi’s historical and cultural worldview and the impact positive role models have on shaping the consciousness of youth. Browder's presentation will include biographical profiles of Drucella Dunjee Houston, Dr. Chancellor Williams, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, Dr. John Henrik Clarke and Dr. Frances Cress Welsing.
5:30pm – Closing Reception with Pan-African Studies, the College of Ethnic Studies, and the University Library. Light refreshments will be served.
