The MCOM MD/PhD Program is a dual-degree program that provides medical students a thorough and high-quality medical school education combined with research training with world-class USF Health investigators.  The program is designed to foster the develop of the next generation of physician scientists who will make major contributions to translational medicine by enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of human disease.

Students begin their journey toward this unique dual degree by participating in rotations in research labs during the summers of their first two years of medical school.  After completing the STEP 1 exam, students select a concentration from among several options, including neuroscience, cardiovascular biology and infectious disease, and continue on to complete their PhD coursework and research in this area..  After defending their dissertations, students go on to complete their final two years of medical school.

This program is fully funded by the MCOM Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs provided students maintain satisfactory academic progress.

“The MD/PhD program isn’t designed for everyone given the vigorous nature of the curriculum,” said Michael Teng, PhD, MCOM associate professor and associate dean of PhD and Postdoctoral Programs.  “If doctors are considered soldiers, MD/PhD holders are special operations.  This is a very small group of physicians with the unique ability to speak both languages of science and medicine.”

From the students:

“I chose to do an MD/PhD because the physician-scientist path provides a really unique avenue to pursue a path in academic medicine. I’ve always loved research, and enjoyed studying specific molecular pathways through my undergraduate research experiences. I’ve learned from my mentors who have gone through the MD/PhD program at other institutions that this dual degree gave them a unique opportunity to focus on their scientific training while going through medical school. It really shaped how they approach their medical practice and laboratory research. They’ve greatly inspired me to want to pursue this path.” Natasha Ram, MCOM first-year medical student.

“My vision of a fulfilling career requires both clinical work and research, and neither solely on their own will suffice. I want to dedicate my life to broadening our understanding of diseases like endometriosis, a disease I became very passionate about at a young age. I look forward to spending countless hours at the bench so that patients can spend more hours enjoying their lives. I believe that my training as a physician scientist will allow me to more readily apply research discoveries into clinical practice, provide a unique and comprehensive perspective to patient care, and contribute to the continuous advancement in medical knowledge that aims to improve the lives of patients.” Monica Moore, entering the PhD portion of the program.

The Whys & Hows of a PhD After MBA

The Whys & Hows of a PhD After MBA

Before anything, what is your reason to do PhD after MBA (Getting to add Dr. before your name doesn’t count!)

A PhD after MBA should be purely based on your interests as it alters the career opportunities that come your way after that. If you had the option to choose between an MBA and MCom after graduation, you would know that the choice was really about a career in corporate management or in academic domain. This is similar, except with higher stakes.

It does not imply that going for a PhD post-MBA will close career opportunities in corporate avenues, but it will certainly shape your career to be better suited for an academic domain, and even your corporate job will have a research undertone to it, such as research analyst or business development consultant that business giants like McKinsey, Endava, Boston Consulting Group, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock Associates, Securities Exchange Commission and Ernst & Young hire.

This blog discusses everything you need to know about PhD options abroad after MBA and how is it a good career option for you.

A PhD or a doctor of philosophy is the highest degree available in any given field and a Doctoral degree in Management does not just give you a competitive edge over an MBA, but also the opportunity to explore boundaries of the subject and conduct original research relating to the management field. The study of management draws from disciplines such as economics, psychology, and sociology. These are interesting disciplines for researching key aspects of management, including organizational behavior, organizational theory and strategy.

What are the Eligibility requirements for a PhD after MBA?

Other than the requirement of holding an MBA degree, the rest of the eligibility criteria are:

1. A good IELTS/TOEFL score to prove your English language proficiency. 2. A GMAT / GRE score is a must, depending upon the university you plan to apply to. 3. Academic transcripts and two-three letters of recommendation are also necessary. 4. More often than not, an interview is conducted either physically or via a video call to assess the student’s ability. 5. Depending on the university, candidates might be required to have a research idea or two ready to present to the university while applying.

How much time does it take to complete a PhD?

A PhD course in Management or Business, on an average, takes around three to five years to complete. The duration of the program and PhD program structure varies depending upon the country and university you select to continue your studies. Usually, the first two years cover the complete coursework that is part of the PhD program.

From the third year on, candidates can devote their time to identifying and working on their research problem, collecting and analyzing data and writing their dissertation thesis. This will be followed by qualifying exams or seminars or thesis defense or combination of the three as a final part of their PhD.

Why pursue a PhD abroad?

PhD is advantageous even in India, but a PhD abroad is loaded with upsides. Many students opt for a PhD abroad because of the following reasons:

✔ Wide Variety of research interests and topics for dissertations to choose from. ✔ World-renowned program supervisors, who are specialists in their academic fields. ✔ Substantial Stipend or Tuition Waiver to PhD students that amounts to $15,000 to $30,000 as compared to 25,000 to 28,000 rupees (less than $384) per annum in India. ✔ Increased facilities and exclusive access to museums, sites, information centers, archives or equipment. ✔ A well-funded network of Public Universities offering a number of academic instructors allowing students to choose from. ✔ Elaborate coursework of two to three years before dissertation research, enabling students to get in-depth knowledge of the subject. ✔ Option for lab rotations for students in their first year to effectively decide the lab they want to do their dissertation work in. ✔ Broad network and increased opportunities for placements in the top firms.

Top PhD programs after MBA

There are plenty of doctoral dissertation areas which are considered to be immediately marketable assets furnishing you with a competitive edge in today’s workforce. Following is the list of top PhD programs post-MBA offered by world ranking universities:

1. Behavioral Science 2. Accounting 3. Economics 4. Management Science & Operations Management 5. Marketing 6. Financial Economics 7. Finance 8. Econometrics and Statistics 9. Accounting & Management 10. Business Economics 11. Health Policy (Management) 12. Management 13. Organizational Behaviour 14. Strategy 15. Technology & Operations Management.

What are the employment opportunities after PhD?

PhD abroad post-MBA is a booster pack that gets you some of the most well-reputed and high-salaried jobs in the world.

A majority of students take up lucrative teaching opportunities in B-schools globally. There are also other esteemed positions including research associate, investment analyst, managing director, senior marketing manager, human resource manager, marketing manager, data analyst, business development manager, associate, business analyst, team leader, consultant and financial economist, that many students go for.

MPhil vs PhD: What to pursue after Masters?

MPhil vs PhD: Master of Philosophy is known as “MPhil” and the full form of PhD is “Doctor of Philosophy”. Although both degrees are similar and have a great importance in their respective fields, there are several factors that differentiate them. These factors include the admission procedure, course duration, course structure and many more. While PhD is by far the most popular research degree across the world, students can also explore other research degrees like MPhil, Doctor of Science, Doctor by Judicial Science, and so on.

MPhil vs PhD: What to pursue after Masters?

Between MPhil vs PhD, many students choose an MPhil degree , which is a 1 to 2 years research based programme and is seen as a first step towards a PhD. However, most students are either not aware or are confused about the degrees and MPhil vs PhD difference. In this article, we explain the basics of both MPhil and PhD degrees and help students in solving the MPhil vs PhD conundrum.

Master of Philosophy vs PhD: What is a PhD?

The PhD or Doctor of Philosophy is one of the highest levels of degree that a student can achieve in his/her academic credentials. A PhD is a Doctorate degree which can be attained through detailed research on a subject, following which the researcher is required to submit a thesis describing the result of her research. Usually, a PhD can be taken up after Master's and MPhil.

However, in certain cases, students can pursue PhD after bachelors as it is prevalent in the USA. As the name suggests, a PhD is a doctorate degree and is mainly pursued by those who are interested in a career in academics. There is no specific time frame for a PhD However, it generally takes upwards of 3 years to complete a PhD which can go up to 7 to 10 years. A PhD is usually undertaken under an academician, working under a university or otherwise, who is known to have enough research experience to guide the PhD candidate.

MPhil vs PhD: What is an MPhil degree?

The Master of Philosophy which is the full form of MPhil is a structured research degree that allows students to take up research-oriented studies for 1 or 2 years. It is an intermediate degree between a Master's and a PhD and is sometimes seen as a first step towards a Doctorate. In MPhil, students learn the fundamentals of research work and may actually investigate the research of others rather than taking up their own research. An MPhil degree is more common in the field of Arts and Humanities, with many universities offering it as a replacement for a Ph.D.

Again, an MPhil degree is not necessarily a research degree. In cases like that of Cambridge University, MPhil replaces the one-year Masters’ degree and has more coursework content. However, in other cases, the MPhil degree's structure is inclined more towards research or the study of it.

MPhil or PhD: Which One is Better?

While the inclination of both PhD and MPhil is towards research, both are far from being similar degrees. Two of the major difference between PhD and MPhil are, of course, their lengths and content structure. The table below highlights MPhil vs PhD difference in terms of length, content, guidance and more.

Difference between PhD and MPhil

What after Masters: MPhil or PhD?

Generally speaking, pursuing a Master's or PhD depends on the interest of the student. Both are research-oriented programmes and lead to different qualifications. Since an MPhil is intermediate to a PhD, many students pursue it as preparation for a PhD. It has, however, been observed that MPhil degrees are mostly offered in the field of Arts and Humanities while STEM-related fields focus more on Ph.D. Further, MPhil courses are rare and not all universities offer an MPhil degree while most universities, especially research intensive ones, offer research opportunities in at least some of the subjects.

MPhil vs PhD: How to apply?

For PhD, the best way to apply is by searching research opportunities in specific departments and writing to them asking for opportunities. While Master's is a must for many universities, many even accept bachelor's students, provided the student can show credentials that are impressive enough for the faculty members. PhD aspirants are required to submit a research proposal and their doctorate depends on whether the research proposal is accepted and an academician at a university is willing to take the student under her.

For application to MPhil, the requirements vary along with the universities. Since an MPhil degree does not require a dissertation; students are not required to submit a research proposal for the same. In fact, the process of applying for an MPhil is more often the same as for Master's. However, the university will look into your research interest during screening. Also, as in PhD, when you apply, it helps to have majored in the same subject that you wish to pursue your MPhil in.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

Both degrees are based on coursework and research, however a PhD has a greater advantage over an MPhil. A candidate for a PhD may teach in academic settings as well as in the field of education.

MPhil is less intensive than a PhD and therefore easier to study than PhD.

The MPhil degree provides several profitable employment prospects in the legal profession, academic research, private industry, government agencies, human services, etc. For MPhil graduates who don't wish to work in the workforce, there is also the option of pursuing a PhD to expand their research opportunities.

In most cases, you can pursue a Ph.D. after completing your Master's and MPhil, though in certain cases such as in the USA,  a research degree can be taken up right after your bachelor's degree.

Yes, usually you can follow up your MPhil with a PhD degree.

The M.Phil programme duration is two years, whereas the duration of the Ph.D. programme can be anywhere between 3 to 6 years.

An MPhil is the most advanced research degree before Ph. D. and is done after a master's degree.

Breaking news, morgan wallen jokes about arrest at first concert after run in with the law: ‘i’m still a little rowdy’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Morgan Wallen fans braved the rain at Ole Miss as the country star returned to the stage for his first performance since being arrested in Nashville nearly two weeks ago.

Fans donned ponchos amid the downpour as they packed into the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, Saturday night for the 30-year-old singer’s concert.

Ahead of the show, inclement weather was predicted for the area over the weekend.

Despite online speculation that the show might be canceled, Morgan’s concert, which was the latest stop on his One Night at a Time World Tour, went ahead as scheduled.

Wallen’s performance followed opening acts by Bailey Zimmerman, Lauren Watkins and Nate Smith.

The show also marked his return to Ole Miss after last year’s mishap when Wallen abruptly canceled his performance after the opening acts had already finished and just minutes before he was slated to take the stage.

The stadium poked fun at the incident, displaying a message on the jumbotron before Wallen took the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen, fortunately Morgan has a full voice and is very able to perform tonight.. Therefore, he’s ready to run this s— back and make things right…,” the message said. “No reason to make your way to the exits for the next two hours because Morgan and the boys are about to rock Oxford’s face off!!!”

morgan wallen

Once the concert started, Wallen continued to make fun of his recent circumstances, telling a story about how his rowdiness nearly got him kicked off his high school baseball team, before playing the song “’98 Braves.”

“I got this set up here behind me, these flags are from my high school. And it represents something,” he told the crowd. “I had a coach, I played baseball, his name was Coach Davidson. When I was a junior in high school, I almost got kicked off the team. I was a li’l rowdy back then. I guess I’m still a little rowdy now,” he admitted, trying to stifle a laugh.

“But coach… he never gave up on me, and there’s been a lot of people who never gave up on me – some of them in this building tonight… you guys included.… I just wanted to shout out that part of my life.”

Wallen also performed his formally unreleased song, “Lies Lies Lies,” which he debuted in March as a part of his digital series, “Abbey Road Studios.”

On Friday, Wallen broke his silence on his arrest as he took to X, formerly Twitter, to denounce his actions while reassuring fans his One Night at a Time tour will continue as planned.

“I didn’t feel right publicly checking in until I made amends with some folks,” Wallen wrote on social media. “I’ve touched base with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the good people at Chief’s. I’m not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility.

I didn't feel right publicly checking in until I made amends with some folks. I’ve touched base with Nashville law enforcement, my family, and the good people at Chief’s. I'm not proud of my behavior, and I accept responsibility. — morgan wallen (@MorganWallen) April 20, 2024

“I have the utmost respect for the officers working every day to keep us all safe. Regarding my tour, there will be no change.”

On April 7, Wallen, 30, was charged with three felony counts by the Metro Nashville Police Department after a chair he allegedly threw off the roof of the six-story Chief’s bar landed on Broadway near two police officers.

“At 10:53 p.m. Sunday evening, Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is cooperating fully with authorities,” Wallen’s attorney, Worrick Robinson, told Fox News Digital.

Country artist Morgan Wallen, 30, was booked early today on 3 cts of felony reckless endangerment and 1 ct of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for throwing a chair from the rooftop of Chief's Bar Sun night. Nearly one year ago, on April 23, 2023, Wallen caused chaos after suddenly canceling what was supposed to be the second appearance of a two-night, sold-out stint in Oxford, Mississippi.

“After last night’s show I started losing my voice so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor and working through my vocal exercises trying to get better,” he explained in an Instagram story. “I really thought I’d be able to take the stage and it kills me to deliver this so close to showtime, but my voice is shot and I am unable to sing.”

Following the cancellation, one fan filed a lawsuit against Wallen on behalf of ticket buyers and sought compensatory damages for a possible class-action lawsuit. The suit was voluntarily dismissed the following day.

morgan wallen

A viral TikTok clip featuring a security guard who worked at the venue suggested Wallen canceled the show because he was too drunk to perform. He said Wallen’s cancellation due to vocal issues was “bullc—” and that an ambulance was needed to pick up the “Chasin’ You” singer. But Big Loud CEO Seth England refuted the inebriation claims in a social media post.

“A hired employee of BEST Crowd Management made false claims as it related to last night’s Morgan Wallen concert and we do not stand behind the detail in his statement. Please refer to Morgan’s social media pages for details.”

Despite last year’s difficulties and the alleged chair-throwing incident in Nashville, Wallen’s Ole Miss stop on his “One Night at a Time” tour was still full steam ahead.

Prior to Saturday’s show, Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter told Fox News Digital, “We are aware of the situation, but no changes have been relayed to us yet. We are obviously monitoring everything very closely.”

Wallen only recently kicked off his “One Night at a Time” tour in Indianapolis on April 4, and he is scheduled to perform throughout the country with Bailey Zimmerman, Nate Smith and Lauren Watkins opening.

Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson and Jon Pardi are just a few country stars set to join Wallen on tour this summer.
