Miral Review: This Slasher Thriller Struggles To Do Full Justice To Its Genre

Miral Review: This Slasher Thriller Struggles To Do Full Justice To Its Genre

Director : M Sakthivel

Cast : Vani Bhojan, Bharath Srinivasan, KS Ravikumar

Miral has all the markings of a slasher thriller. The film opens with a superbly staged nightmare its lead wakes up from. Rama (Vani Bhojan), Hari (Bharath) and their young son hit the road in the wee hours, blasting Dhee and Arivu’s ‘Enjoy Enjaami’ in full volume in their car. But a work call stops their joyride — Hari steps out and a masked intruder takes him out with a hit. M Sakthivel uses the car’s rearview mirror to tactfully evoke suspense. But when the same nightmare unfolds as a terrifying reality later on, the makers struggle to make anything out of it.

Rama and Hari are a young couple who might seem like they have everything — a beautiful home, a sensitive son and romance. But not everything is as it seems. Rama, who is riddled with traumatic anxiety and ominous visions, lives a disturbed life. We realise something is deeply wrong in the household when Hari — a picture of an ideal husband — instructs his 10-year-old (Sai) to take care of his mother when he is away. To make things right, the family sets off to Rama’s hometown to make a pilgrimage to their village temple. And on their way back home is where the film actually begins. The car stops. Intruders intrude and the slashing unfolds. But does the strike leave behind any mark?

Up until this point, Sakthivel holds the cards close to his chest, careful not to let us in on anything. When they reach Rama’s hometown, we are told that the couple eloped and married outside caste and against blessings. But we never see the couple in love. It is a romance that is already established when we watch their story unfold, just like every other detail. And similarly, when Sai happens upon the same mask that haunts Rama in her nightmares, we aren’t told why. And the dots, in fact, are never connected. While this technique is often an accompaniment with the genre, the excruciating guessing game in Miral comes off as shoddy writing. When Hari (a robust Bharath) lets out a scream asking “Ennada nadakudhu inga (what in the world is happening)” at one point in the film, it hits close to home. And by the time the makers try to switch its genre a few minutes before its ending, we are left exhausted and the reveal ends up having hardly any effect at all.

But to its credit, the film accommodates some striking imagery for all its trappings of a mediocre slasher film. The mirror, pulp horror’s favourite prop, gets a superb sidetrack of its own in Miral . Imagine a village without any mirrors. Rama’s village swears by one unflinching belief and that is — no mirrors in the household. So, the only mirrors that we do see are the tiny mirrors in the car, in which most of the horror show unfolds. But such rich visual symbolisms are unfortunately lost in a movie in which the objects in the mirror are “smarter” than they appear.

Miral Movie Review (2022)

Bharath and vani bhojan's miral tamil movie review by galatta - directed by m. sakthivel.

Miral Movie Review in English

Miral Movie Cast & Crew

Director M. Sakthivel's Miral produced under the Axess Film Factory stars Bharath and Vani Bhojan in the lead roles and has been released in theatres today. Miral is a slasher thriller and had an intense, dark, and gritty trailer released sometime back, which was well-received by fans. Has the film lived up to the expectations? Well, here we go.

When Rama (Vani Bhojan) starts having a mental breakdown after having some dreams, her husband Hari (Bharath) decides to take her to their family temple hoping to make things better. But, can they survive the series of mysterious encounters on their own?

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES, AND DIRECTION

The screenplay of Miral written by M. Sakthivel is a riveting thriller that will keep the audience hooked to their seats with its elements. It has been a long time since such a film has been written and when finally made, it hits the mark. It is carefully thought out and framed in order to bring the maximum amount of potential out of it. It definitely is not perfect (which movie is?) but that isn't something that will make the audience want to rip the hair right off of their heads.

Since dialogues come under screenplay, it contributes to what was written. The dialogue in Miral helps move the story forward as there is not much that is unnecessary that will make the audience scratch their heads. Almost everything that is being conveyed is for the audience to understand what is going on and to keep up with all the mystery that takes place on the screen.   With M. Sakthivel making his debut as a director with Miral, he knew exactly what he needed to do given the fact that he wrote the film. He knew what the end result had to look like and it definitely appears as if he gave it his all to achieve that. He executed the screenplay in a direction as well as he could and it shows. Miral certainly does not look like a movie made by a debutant director and kudos to him for that.

Bharath has done a great job in this thriller and it is something one cannot look past. It is promising, intense, and very convincing which adds to his ability as an actor. He does not disappoint and completely sells his performance with the script that he has got and the material he has at his disposal to work with.

Vani Bhojan, just like Bharath, gives it her all. She is not just another character in a film that is just there as a necessity of a female element. She plays a crucial role and is definitely a character that helps the story move forward - so when it comes to that, she nailed it. Her performance seems natural and one may even be able to connect with it. That is how well she has done.

The cinematography is on point. Suresh Bala was able to capture the essence required and was able to project that on the screen wonderfully. Being a thriller, it is usually easy to create suspense in a closed space. But, Bala showed off his capabilities as a cinematographer by creating room for eerie uneasiness even in vast open spaces with his framing and use of lighting. This is something that can surely not be ignored as almost every frame is carefully orchestrated.

Music composer Prasad S N did a magnificent job with the background score. It keeps the audience hooked and on their feet, and his captivating BGMs only add to the mystery and thrilling ride of the film. It is used carefully in order to heighten the suspense, intensify the emotions that are being felt, and capture the weight of the moment.

Miral is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that embarks on a wonderful journey to give the audience an experience that is fresh and respective of the genre with no unnecessary detours.

Verdict: A racy, heart-pounding thriller that is bound to have the audience hooked right from the very beginning.

Critics Review

Opportunity misfired.

Content-wise it is in the length of a short film, to stretch it out to a feature, screenplay requires plenty of interesting elements to engage and that is absolutely missing here. (more)

Tries to threaten but fails due to mediocre writing

Miral is not very sound technically but provides what's needed to a meagre extent. Overall, Miral scares us in parts but doesn't threaten or keeps on the edge of our seats. (more)

A racy, heart-pounding thriller that is bound to have the audience hooked right from the very beginning.

Miral is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that embarks on a wonderful journey to give the audience an experience that is fresh and respective of the genre with no unnecessary detours. (more)

Miral is a watchable thriller with supernatural elements and a social message.

A film under the banner Axess film factory will always create buzz among cinephiles due to their interesting filmography. In this particular venture, the film stalls to capitalize on the expectations bestowed on it yet delivering a decent output. As a whole, the generic narrative of revenge saves th... (more)

Deceptive supernatural thriller that banks on jump scares

Suresh Bala's cinematography is a major plus with the wide aerial shots of the isolated place and the rotating turbines adding to the intrigue while the closeups of Vani Bhojan and the others experiencing the horror have the desired effect. The rest of the technical aspects are on par. Axess Film ... (more)

VIJAYANAND MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Vijayanand is a Kannada Biopic film written and directed by Rishika Sharma. The film has Nihal Rajput playing the legendary role of popular Indian businessman Dr. Vijay Sankeshwar, while Anant Nag plays as his father. Bharat Bopanna portrays the role of Anand. The film is produced by Anand Sankeshwar.

Being a biopic, the film is weaved around the rise of Vijay Sankeshwar to spotlight through his diligence and perseverance in business arena. It encompasses all the significant events of his life right from his decision to break away from his traditional printing business to a new spectrum of transportation.

Nihal Rajput is befitting for this role as he carries the charisma throughout the film. He is more convincing during the emotional scenes while the rest are performed with ease. Anant Nag as a verbally expressive father is carved out meticulously to meet the demands of the script. Ravi Bopanna and other cast members are stitched together in cohesion.

Frames of Keerthan Poojari is serene in every aspect. It lays foundation for the period setup and enhances the mood of the film. Gopi Sundar shines both in songs as well as in the background score. Music sweeps the audience through its majestic essence every single time. Sharp dialogues lands its morale nature to the audience while all the other come up as explanations rather than a response for a situation. Quite a few time, the fourth wall is broken to convince the audience with the flesh of reality.

The new wave of Kannada cinema is really making a difference among other film industries. Following the success of Kantara, this biopic too holds the potential to make it big. Rishika Sharma has given the audience a cinematic experience of the hardships faced by a common man who wants to go against the grain. There are scenes which threaten us about our existence in this power dominated society which has its own way of functioning.

Vijayanand is an honest attempt by the filmmaker to throw light on the life of Dr. Vijay Sankeshwar. The plot relies heavily on dialogues which acts for the film. Market fight sequence deserves a special mention for its stunt choreography.

The plot loses its steam at the end of first half where a huge conflict was at stake. Though the film was based on actual events, it fails to offer any captivating sequences. Conflicts during the latter part of the film becomes contrived and falls flat with the logical standards set by the same. At the end, the film wants us to believe that perseverance will pay at any given scenario.
