Reaching for the Top

The Aalto Executive Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a structured program in Business Administration for experienced individuals with considerable managerial experience who wish to contribute to the development of their professional competence and their key areas of interest.

Accredited by AACBS, AMBA and EQUIS

The program has both real-world relevance and academic rigor and focuses on the relevance to the employer and the professional development of the candidate.

Aalto Executive DBA graduates will develop doctoral-level in-depth knowledge of the latest theories and methodologies in business research and act as thought leaders for organizational change. In addition to executive positions, DBA graduates typically work in various expert positions in corporations and the public sector. The DBA research project – finalized in a publicly defended DBA thesis – typically has strong linkages to business and managerial practice. DBA candidates can, for instance, conduct a sizable research project for their employer.

Compared to some more scientifically oriented doctoral programs, the DBA studies and research place emphasis on the application of theories – the creation and testing of an entirely novel theory is not a necessity. The majors of Aalto Executive DBA are strategy and marketing, but any managerially relevant interdisciplinary topics are strongly encouraged.

The DBA diploma is granted by Aalto University School of Business.

  • A collegial network with professors and other researchers and the Executive DBA candidates
  • Competence in presenting papers in international seminars and conferences

Explore Aalto Executive DBA Thesis'

To graduate, the Aalto Executive DBA candidate must have completed doctoral study courses equivalent to 40 ECTS credits that consist of compulsory courses on academic writing and research methods as well as courses that support the thesis’ topic.

Normally, a course consists of approximately 30 journal articles or research papers around a subject. Typically, there are no traditional lectures nor exams. The primary instructor can be contacted online when preparing the reaction papers and essays around the readings. Moreover, the DBA students discuss the readings related to their coursework and receive face-to-face feedback from the instructors during the course.

The Aalto Executive DBA Thesis

As a result of the Aalto Executive DBA studies, the candidate will produce a DBA thesis (200 ECTS credits) that has strong linkages to business and managerial practice. The DBA thesis will deliver a high degree of both scholarship and independent thought. The thesis supervision is conducted by highly qualified professors from Aalto University.

The thesis is written in English and typically consists of 3–4 scientific articles or conference papers and a summary. The thesis is typically 100–150 pages in total. The completed thesis is defended at public examination.

In line with high-intensity management education programs, the Aalto Executive DBA program provides the opportunity for accelerated progress through three academic years. A maximum of six years of studies are allowed to complete the Aalto Executive DBA program.

Aalto University retains Finland’s #1 spot in QS ranking

Aalto-yliopisto valittiin Suomen parhaaksi yliopistoksi QS-vertailussa.

Aalto University continued its success in the international QS World University Rankings, maintaining its position as the best university in Finland. Its global ranking was 113, compared to 109 in 2023.

In the QS ranking, universities are evaluated across nine indicators, each with slightly different weightings. Universities are assessed based on research citations, academic reputation, employer reputation, the proportion of international academic staff, graduate employability, sustainability, international research networks, student-to-faculty ratio, and the ratio of international students.

Aalto performed best in graduate employability (52nd place internationally) and sustainability (53rd place). Aalto University was ranked first in Finland in five areas.

The QS World Ranking evaluates the top 1,500 universities worldwide, and this year the top spot is again taken by the United States’ Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Depending on the calculation method, there are between 17,000 and 22,000 universities worldwide.

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) is one of the world's most important university rankings. In addition to the general rankings, QS produces rankings in specific fields of science and regional rankings. These specific rankings are more relevant to Aalto University than the general rankings, as Aalto specialises in technology, business and the arts.  Read more: QS ranking results Aalto University rankings

Course description: This PhD course will provide an introduction to the dynamic and fast expanding research area of sustainable finance. We will start by discussing data and measurement related issues. In doing so, we will cover common ways of quantifying the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) profiles of firms, challenges regarding current data and measurement approaches, and also zoom in on the important topics of ESG reporting standards and disclosure requirements . The second part of the course will focus on the abundant research concerned with the financial performance implications of ESG. We will consider performance issues from both the firm and the invstor perspective . The third part of the course will address the topic of greenwashing and more generally institutional investor behavior when it comes to ESG and sustainability considerations. The fourth part will provide an overview of issues related to GHG emissions and discuss climate finance more generally. In the last part of the course, we will study ESG and sustainability considerations in other asset classes (e.g., fixed income or private equity).

Create An Impressive Resume

Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors, and more than 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community's diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

The Department of Civil Engineering aims to build the structures of tomorrow through research, education, and collaboration. In cooperation with domestic and international partners, we use our expertise to create multidisciplinary and solution-oriented approaches. One of the missions of our building design and construction research is to integrate the two fields by creating new, research-based knowledge to promote energy-efficient, safe, sustainable, healthy and comfortable buildings, thus also supporting the transformation of the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

The Structural Mechanics research group is now hiring for a full-time Doctoral Researcher (PhD Student) position .

We are looking for exceptional candidates who possess the drive and ability to innovate in the field of structural mechanics. The ideal candidate will be passionate about exploring new frontiers in this discipline and pushing beyond the current state-of-the-art. The primary research activities for this position will involve integrating material science, physics of solids and structures, rigorous mathematical analysis, and computational methods with modern scientific methodologies and manufacturing technologies to shape the future of this field.

Requirements

Applicants must have (or about to have by August 2023) a Master's degree in Mechanics (e.g., Applied, Computational, Solid, Structural), Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Structural), Materials Science, Mathematics, Physics, or in a similar field.

In addition, profound knowledge of mathematics, mechanics, and general physics is expected. Programming skills and experience in CAD/CAE software are considered as an advantage for the candidate. Experience in developing experimental setups and conducting physical tests would also be beneficial. A successful candidate should demonstrate capability and willingness to learn new methods, can work both independently and in a team, and has good written and oral communication skills in English.

The selected candidate will need to apply for the study right in doctoral studies at Aalto University School of Engineering. Traveling with research visits to leading research groups outside Finland will provide knowledge and experience exchange and help to establish long-term international relationships.

Besides conducting high-quality scientific research, you will also get a unique opportunity to develop your supervising and teaching skills, e.g., by advising graduate and undergraduate students as well as acting as a teaching assistant for some of the department courses.

The doctoral studies at Aalto University take approximately four years. The candidate will be offered a one-year contract with possibility of an extension. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours.
