Think Tanks and Research Careers

  • Are you interested in big picture policy issues?
  • Do you have a passion for research?
  • Do you want to help bridge the gap between research and policy?

If so, then you might want to consider working in a think tank.

Career Tracks

Think tanks and research organizations focus on a variety of cross-cutting international and domestic issues like security, health, tax policy, environmental issues, food security, human rights, and many more. These organizations are often supported by governments, foundations, businesses, and endowments.

Think tankers with a BA or an MA can expect employment mainly in administrative positions, though some research opportunities are available. Administrative positions assist with coordinating and managing events and publications sponsored by think tanks. More substantial research positions in a think tank generally require a doctoral degree.

Higher education and experience in the field is generally required for substantive research positions. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are essential One must be able to write concise briefing reports as well as longer academic works. Presentation skills are also important, as is comfort in addressing an audience of experts. Competitive candidates will also be able to demonstrate proficiency in foreign languages and will have a solid command of word processing and spreadsheet applications and the Internet. Advanced writing and reading skills in foreign languages is a key advantage in getting the job. Many positions require solid quantitative skills and knowledge of statistical packages.

Application Process

In response to budget constraints, research organizations are re-examining their focus. Entry-level positions remain highly competitive and success in securing a post requires planning and persistence. Most think tanks and research institutes do have formal internship programs and many look first to current and former interns to fill new positions. Not only are interns in a position to hear about openings before they are advertised externally, but they also frequently have had prior occasion to demonstrate their specialized knowledge, skills, and dedication.

Entry-level employees with an MA or a BA can expect starting salaries from the high 20’s to mid 40’s , depending on the organization, the level of responsibility, the experience of the applicant, and the size and funding base of the institute. Other benefits such as attending events and corresponding with professionals and experts in a certain field are great opportunities to form contacts that may be useful for future jobs.

  • Think tanks exist to stimulate debate and influence government policy.
  • While research skills are vital for a professional thinker, the objective of any think-tank is to influence policymakers. Good PR and communications are at the core of the operation, and media exposure is often essential to success. Most think-tanks hold conferences and other events to promote the published research and recommendations.
  • Working at a think tank is often an excellent springboard for a career in academia or policy. It is common to see those in junior level positions leaving after 2-3 years to pursue higher education and professional opportunities in academia, government, private corporations, and consulting firms.
  • Many think tanks have well-defined ideological perspectives. Before working at a think tank, do your research. Make sure you are working at a think tank that is consistent with your political beliefs.

PRA is the preeminent progressive think tank that monitors and challenges the U.S. Right Wing. For 40 years, PRA has built the capacity of social justice change makers to understand, adjust, and do battle with their organized adversaries on the Political Right. We are a broadly respected and trusted source of information and analysis among advocates, journalists, and academics alike, combining a social justice movement orientation with deep expertise on the key groups and individuals at the center of the Right’s new governing coalition, including the Christian Right/theocrats, White nationalists and the “alt-right,” economic libertarians, and Patriots and other right-wing forces.

At PRA our main objectives are to: 1) inform and strengthen the work of frontline social justice partners; 2) expose and isolate organized opponents of human and civil rights; and, 3) shape public debate of key issues, using our profile as a think tank to open space for partners to advance needed solutions. Distinct from some other “watchdog” organizations, social justice groups comprise PRA ’s principal constituency. PRA is likewise unusual in having a broad focus across many sectors of the Right, from neo-Nazis to free-market neoliberals.

These may be in-person or virtual.

Some comments from our 2023 interns:

“As an intern at NCHR, I learned how research and coordination of different strategies are needed to make effective changes in health policy. Everything needs to be backed by evidence, or else your argument is not credible. After interning, I now know where to best find the evidence and how to explain it so anyone will understand the point we are trying to make. And I was glad to have the opportunity to transition to staff at NCHR after my internship was over.”

“During my internship at NCHR, I received extensive guidance and constructive feedback from senior staff on research and writing concerning health-related topics. This experience was more than practical training in health policy research; it also nurtured in me a strong sense of social responsibility regarding the oversight of medicines and medical devices entering the market—an invaluable lesson for all citizens.”

“My internship exposed me to the intricate process of policy development and advocacy, which emphasized the significance of strong teamwork and well-researched arguments. I learned how to navigate various research information, analyze it effectively, and communicate findings clearly. This experience deepened my understanding of how research can drive meaningful change in the healthcare policy landscape.”

Some comments from our previous interns:

“This internship really forced me to flex muscles I hadn’t previously practiced, particularly those involved in translating scientific literature for an everyday audience. I learned how to actively engage with research journals in a way that tested my understanding, as nothing confirms learning like being able to teach it to someone else.”

“The relationships I formed with the staff and the interns are some I will cherish forever. My summer in DC allowed for personal growth that I wasn’t necessarily expecting, and I left the city feeling accomplished in my ability to flourish in my own independence and determination because of the opportunities and individuals I interacted with at NCHR.”

“My internship experience really motivated me to pursue a medical career that involves clinical medicine, journalism, and policy work.  I was intrigued by the work being done by non-profit organizations and the internship compelled me to continue health policy research once I graduate.”

“I learned a different way of consuming and communicating medical and public health research. We turned the research into material that’s accessible for the general public, and that is a type of material I haven’t been asked to write before. This helped me identify the most important and understandable parts of the research.”

think tanks research jobs

“In writing tweets and articles for NCHR, as well as assisting with comments submitted to federal health agencies, I have learned to succinctly articulate health research and policy to a variety of audiences and critically assess differin g perspectives on health issues.”

“By attending congressional briefings and researching current health issues, I learned how to critically and objectively analyze research regarding drugs and medical devices.”

“My experience interning at NCHR has given me an incredible foundation of knowledge and skills. It’s broadened my perspective of health policy, allowed me to understand a wide range of emerging health issues, and taught me to write concisely. I look forward to using what I’ve learned here in my future studies and work.”

“Attending congressional briefings and creating content for both our website and social media has allowed me to gain specific skills and experiences that I will be able to use throughout my entire career!”

Think Tanks From Five Countries Predict China to Overtake U.S. as World’s Largest Economy by 2035

Competing with the United States for global economic dominance, China is expected to surpass the U.S. GDP by around 2035. However, achieving this goal requires maintaining an annual growth rate of about 5%, with a minimum of 4%, making it challenging.

On the 1st, China ’s Global Times reported, according to a joint research report by think tanks from five countries, including China’s Renmin University Chongyang Institute of Financial Studies, that China’s GDP is expected to overtake the United States as the world ’s largest economy by around 2035. The research team, comprised of scholars from the United States, Russia, Canada, India, and China, predicts that China’s growth will lead the global economy in the future.

Global Times quoted domestic and international analysts saying that China will maintain steady growth momentum and cautiously address challenges while achieving its annual GDP growth target in 2024.

The report states that if China maintains an annual GDP growth rate of about 5% over the next few years and continues with a minimum growth rate of 4% until 2035, it will surpass the United States as the world’s leading economy around that time. The report is based on China’s faster economic growth, the continuous appreciation and internationalization of the yuan, and a long-term bullish outlook on the yuan against the U.S. dollar. It also mentioned that developing countries will become the core engine of global economic growth, and their high growth rates could double the world’s GDP within the next decade.

China has set its economic growth rate target 2024 at around 5%, exceeding some international organizations’ forecasts. Last year, it achieved a 5.2% growth over the previous year, surpassing the official target of “around 5%,” but the outlook for this year is expected to be tough.

John Ross, a senior researcher at the Chongyang Institute of Financial Studies, told the Global Times , “There’s no reason China can’t meet its GDP growth target for 2024.” He argued that China’s investment is much more efficient than the U.S., suggesting that if China invests about 40% of its GDP, its growth rate will reach 5%. Based on last year’s data, China will significantly outperform the U.S. and the European Union (EU), remaining a major driver of global economic growth as it has for the past 40 years.

Marco Fernandez, a researcher at the Brazil-based Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, suggested in an interview with the Global Times on the 23rd of the last month that China, already larger in purchasing power per capita, could very likely surpass the U.S. in GDP terms.

However, claims that China’s likelihood of becoming the global economic superpower over the U.S. is slim are also significant.

Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), predicted in a column posted on the Council’s blog on the 22nd of last month titled The Tilted Balance of Power: Peak China and the Resilience of the United States that assuming an annual growth rate of 5%, China might not surpass the U.S. by 2035.

Yan Xuetong, the director of the Institute of International Relations at Tsinghua University, also predicted at an international relations outlook seminar held at Tsinghua University on January 13 this year that “the gap in national power between China and the U.S. could widen rather than narrow in the next decade amid intensifying competition between the two countries.”

9 facts about u.s. catholics.

Catholics are one of the largest religious groups in the United States, outnumbering any single Protestant denomination. The U.S. has more Catholics than all but three other countries – Brazil, Mexico and the Philippines – according to the Vatican’s Statistical Yearbook of the Church.

Here are nine key facts about the U.S. Catholic population.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to serve as a reference source on the basic demographic attributes, religious characteristics and political preferences of U.S. Catholics.

The analysis draws mainly on data from the Center’s National Public Opinion Reference Surveys (NPORS) conducted in 2022 and 2023. NPORS is an annual survey of U.S. adults who are selected for participation using address-based sampling from the U.S. Postal Service’s Delivery Sequence File. Respondents may answer either by paper or online.

This post also relies on a variety of surveys conducted online among respondents who are part of the Center’s American Trends Panel or other national survey panels recruited through random sampling (not “opt-in” polls).

All of the surveys used in this analysis are weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, education and other categories.

Today, 20% of U.S. adults describe themselves as Catholics, according to our latest survey. This percentage has been generally stable since 2014. But it is slightly lower than in 2007, when 24% of U.S. adults identified as Catholic.

Overall, there were about 262 million adults in the U.S. in 2023, according to the U.S. Census Bureau . This suggests that there are roughly 52 million Catholic adults nationwide.

Most U.S. Catholics are White, but a third are Hispanic. The Catholic population is 57% White, 33% Hispanic, 4% Asian and 2% Black, while 3% are of another race.

Since 2007, the share of U.S. Catholics who are White has dropped by 8 percentage points, while the share who are Hispanic has ticked upward by 4 points.

This change has implications for the profile of Catholic Americans as a whole because White Catholics have distinctive social and political traits, as we’ll discuss in more detail below.

Catholics tend to be older than Americans overall. Nearly six-in-ten Catholic adults (58%) are ages 50 and older. Among all U.S. adults in the survey, by comparison, 48% fall in this age range.

But Hispanic Catholics tend to be a lot younger than White Catholics. Fewer than half of Hispanic Catholics (43%) are 50 and older, compared with about two-thirds (68%) of White Catholics. And just 14% of Hispanic Catholics are ages 65 and older, versus 38% of White Catholics.

A bar chart showing that, in the U.S., White Catholics are older than Hispanic Catholics, on average.

Roughly three-in-ten U.S. Catholics (29%) live in the South, while 26% live in the Northeast, 24% in the West and 21% in the Midwest.

A bar chart showing that, in the U.S., most White Catholics live in Northeast or Midwest; most Hispanic Catholics live in South or West.

The racial and ethnic profile of the Catholic population varies considerably by region. For example, in the Midwest, 80% of Catholics are White and 17% are Hispanic. In the Northeast, 72% of Catholics are White and 19% are Hispanic.

In the South, 49% are White and 40% are Hispanic. And in the West, there are more Hispanic Catholics than White Catholics (55% vs. 30%).

A bar chart showing that racial, ethnic makeup of the U.S. Catholic population varies by region.

About a third of U.S. Catholics (32%) have a bachelor’s degree. Another 28% have some college experience but not a bachelor’s degree, and 40% have a high school education or less. This distribution is similar to that of the general adult population.

A bar chart showing that White Catholics are more likely than Hispanic Catholics to be college graduates.

On average, White Catholics have higher levels of educational attainment than Hispanic Catholics. Roughly four-in-ten White Catholics (39%) have at least a bachelor’s degree, while 32% have a high school education or less. Among Hispanic Catholics, 16% have a bachelor’s degree and 59% have a high school education or less.

About three-in-ten U.S. Catholics (28%) say they attend Mass weekly or more often. Larger shares of Catholics say they pray on a daily basis (52%) and say religion is very important in their life (46%).

Overall, 20% of U.S. Catholics say they attend Mass weekly and pray daily and consider religion very important in their life. By contrast, 10% of Catholics say they attend Mass a few times a year or less often and pray seldom or never and consider religion not too or not all important in their life.

By way of comparison, 40% of U.S. Protestants say they attend services at least weekly. And about two-thirds of Protestants pray daily (67%) and say religion is very important in their life (66%).

A bar chart showing that 28% of U.S. Catholics say they attend Mass weekly.

About half of Catholic registered voters (52%) identify with or lean toward the Republican Party, while 44% affiliate with the Democratic Party.

A diverging bar chart showing that 61% of White Catholics align with Republican Party; 60% of Hispanic Catholics favor Democratic Party.

But partisan affiliation varies by race and ethnicity. Roughly six-in-ten White Catholic registered voters (61%) say they identify with or lean toward the GOP, compared with 35% of Hispanic Catholics.

Conversely, 60% of Hispanic Catholics who are registered voters say they identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, compared with 37% of White Catholics.

In the 2022 congressional midterm elections, 56% of Catholics said they voted for Republican candidates, while 43% backed Democrats. And in the 2020 presidential election, Catholic voters were split down the middle: 49% backed Donald Trump and 50% voted for Joe Biden.

These overall splits hide big differences between White and Hispanic Catholic voters. For example, White Catholics favored Trump over Biden by a 15-point margin in 2020, while Hispanic Catholics backed Biden over Trump by a 35-point margin.

A table showing that Catholic voters were evenly split in the 2020 presidential election.

While the Catholic Church opposes abortion , about six-in-ten Catholics say abortion should be legal. This includes 39% who say it should be legal in most cases and 22% who say it should be legal in all cases. Roughly four-in-ten Catholics say abortion should be illegal in most (28%) or all (11%) cases.

Catholics’ opinions about abortion tend to align with their political leanings. Among Catholic Democrats, 78% say abortion should be legal in most or all cases. Among Catholic Republicans, 43% say this.

Catholic Democrats are a little less likely than non-Catholic Democrats to say abortion should be legal in most or all cases (78% vs. 86%).

A table showing that 6 in 10 U.S. Catholics say abortion should be legal in most or all cases.

Three-quarters of Catholics view Pope Francis favorably, according to our February 2024 survey. That’s a little lower than the 80% of Catholics or more who expressed a positive view of Francis in many previous polls during his papacy, which began in 2013.

Catholic Democrats (89%) are much more likely than Catholic Republicans (63%) to view Francis favorably.

A bar chart showing that three-quarters of U.S. Catholics rate Pope Francis favorably.

Jobs generation remains below govt target–Ibon

  • Cai U. Ordinario
  • April 15, 2024
  • 2 minute read

DESPITE the improvement in the country’s employment data, Ibon Foundation Inc. said the latest data showed jobs generation remained below target.

Citing Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data, the nongovernment think tank said the number of employed persons in February increased only by 154,000.

The data showed the total number of employed Filipinos reached 49 million in February 2024 from 48.8 million in February 2023. This is less than 30 percent of the “implied annual target.”

“Wage and poverty figures in their entirety; the so-called gains in the labor market are lackluster and are clearly not translating into gainful employment where Filipinos make enough to live on,” according to Ibon.

The group said the government’s Labor and Employment Plan (LEP) 2023-2028 targeted to generate “over 3 million jobs” for Filipinos which is an average of over 500,000 annually.

The PSA also reported a decrease in the number of unemployed by 679,000 to 1.8 million from 2.5 million and underemployed by 210,000 to 6.1 million from 6.3 million.

However, Ibon said job creation remained weak and that a major reason for the decline in the number of jobless Filipinos may have been due to those who stopped looking for work and dropped out of the labor force.

The number of those in the labor force fell by 526,000 to 50.7 million from 51.3 million, and the labor force participation rate fell to 64.8 percent from 66.6 percent the year before.

Meanwhile, Ibon estimated that there are 20.4 million informal workers which is 41.6 percent of total employed persons as of February 2024.

It added that this is comprised of 2.1 million domestic workers, the data showed 13.3 million self-employed and 4.9 million working in family-owned farms and businesses including 3.8 million unpaid family workers.
