Maaveeran review: Rollercoaster of action, fantasy and social commentary

Swathi P Ajith

Maaveeran, directed by Madonne Ashwin and starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead, sheds light on a pressing social issue in our society — the controversial practice of relocating slum dwellers to supposed development zones. The film uncovers the intricate web of corruption and deceit behind this process. Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan), a struggling artist who makes ends meet by drawing cartoons portraying the local hero 'Maaveeran,' finds himself compelled to leave his home behind with his family and relocate to a seemingly promising high-rise in the city. However, chaos ensues as the poorly constructed apartment begins to crumble, causing numerous injuries to the residents.

Amidst this turmoil, Sathya starts hearing voices in his head, declaring him the true 'Maaveeran' who must ensure the safety of his people after an accident. Madonna Ashwin effectively combines elements of fantasy, comedy, action, and timely social commentary that fascinates audiences, keeping them engaged throughout.

Tamil cinema seems to be undergoing a slight shift towards fantasy films where the heroes are portrayed as individuals who assist the vulnerable using superheroic abilities. A recent example of this trend is the movie 'Veeran.' In this regard, Sivakarthikeyan delivers a seamless performance, effortlessly portraying a character who undergoes a remarkable transformation from naivety to unwavering confidence. His portrayal is highly convincing, capturing the essence of a vulnerable individual evolving into a stronger, more self-assured version of himself. While transitioning to the second half, the film tends to prolong its storyline. Given the predictable nature of the plot, there are numerous scenes that may appear unnecessary to the audience. The time dedicated to building up to the climax feels excessively drawn out.

'Veeran' Review: A lightning bolt of entertainment strikes Tamil cinema

Actor Sivakarthikeyan releases teaser of Vaibhav-starrer 'Buffoon'

Regarding the actors' performances, the entire cast deserves commendation. Saritha, who portrays Sivakarthikeyan's mother, effortlessly embodies the role of a strong yet caring mother. Yogi Babu's inclusion in the film is an absolute delight, and his comedic chemistry with Sivakarthikeyan is truly entertaining. Nila and Minister Jayakodi, portrayed by Aditi Shankar and Mysskin respectively, have also left audiences awestruck with their remarkable performances.

All in all, Maaveeran is an immensely captivating and enjoyable film, which can arguably be seen as Sivakarthikeyan's comeback in Tamil cinema. While the ending may come across as somewhat cliché, it doesn't significantly impact the overall viewing experience, albeit to a certain extent. The director has skillfully presented the central themes with remarkable finesse, effortlessly ensuring that every aspect of the movie feels organic and seamlessly falls into place.

Maaveeran movie review: Sivakarthikeyan’s superhero film is good but predictable

Maaveeran movie review: sivakarthikeyan-starrer shares its soul with director madonne ashwin's debut film mandela, which bagged him a national award..

behindwoods tamil movie review maaveeran

It’s always fascinating to see how the same idea manifests in completely different films, more so when both are made by the same director. Madonne Ashwin’s sophomore film, Maaveeran, shares its soul with his debut Mandela, which bagged two National Awards in 2022. In Mandela, a political satire, a commoner in a remote Tamil Nadu village suddenly becomes the VIP, when two warring political parties realise his vote will decide the winner of the local election. The vote becomes his superpower. He first starts abusing his newfound influence and eventually realises its purpose. Now, replace the vote with a voice that warns the hero about every upcoming danger, and you get Maaveeran (Superhero). While Mandela is a realistic rural drama that explores the idea of an individual’s fight against the system, Maaveeran does the same as a superhero origin story. However, while Mandela had a lot going for it, Maaveeran turns out to be basic with respect to its story. Madonne Ashwin has settled for a straightforward film with the idea that could have been so much more than Maaveeran.

It is not to say the film is underwhelming, but just like the film’s hero, it hesitates to live up to its potential. The film takes a long time to set up things, and it gets excruciating to see Sathya ( Sivakarthikeyan ), a coward, getting beaten up and shamed repeatedly. A comic artiste, Sathya sells himself short by letting someone use his sketches for a Tamil paper. He doesn’t have it in him to demand money or an opportunity from the one exploiting him. Nila (Aditi Shankar), the sub-editor of the paper, ends up standing up for Sathya and gets him a job. Meanwhile, Sathya and others living in a slum are made to relocate to a multi-storey apartment as part of the government scheme. Things get worse when things in the apartment start falling apart, literally. The subpar construction makes the apartment unlivable but people are left with no option. While Sathya’s mother keeps revolting against the contractor, the son keeps telling her to ‘adjust’. He instead uses all his troubles to create content for his comic Maaveeran, a superhero who solves all the problems of the oppressed. But when he realises even his mom considers him unfit to live a respectful life, Sathya tries to take his life. Though he fails in doing this as well, he sustains an injury to his head, and he starts hearing a voice (Vijay Sethupathi).

behindwoods tamil movie review maaveeran

The whole first half of the film is spent on this set-up, which is tiring. Though the execution is brilliant and Yogi Babu keeps you entertained, those are not enough to make up for its predictability. On top of that, Sathya is completely unlikable (not Sivakarthikeyan’s performance, mind you). Ashwin keeps making us wait for his hero to finally attain basic human dignity and a spine, but the wait is interminable. Though he is a stand-in for the collective cowardice of society, it is frustrating to see him not get redemption till the very end. Maybe, it’s human nature to hate someone that reminds us of our shortcomings, so it is hard to travel with this unlikable hero.

What stands out in Maaveeran is those few great ideas that are explored in the action sequences. On top of that, the ingenious interaction between Sathya and the voice. It is hilarious to see someone fight and wrestle with his own thoughts. I can’t imagine what the script of Maaveeran will look like. It would be messy, but fascinating. When you think about it, there are two scripts at play here. One that’s happening to Sathya and the one the voice narrates to him. Though the outcome of each scene is the same, both narratives are different. A big shoutout to Madonne Ashwin to conceive such a complex idea. When you think about it, Sathya is not breaking the fourth wall, like Fleabag for instance. Yet, there’s something meta going on here. The voice could be Sathya’s subconscious or a superpower or the collective voice of the audience, who badly want him to hit back. Despite all such brilliance that’s realised towards the end of the film, in retrospect, the excruciating wait one has to endure to get there does leave a bit of a bad aftertaste.

Maaveeran Movie Review: Unique premise and useful politics make this a winning entertainer

Maaveeran Movie Review: Unique premise and useful politics make this a winning entertainer

Rating: ( 3.5 / 5)

Among the very many thoughts I had while watching the layered Maaveeran concerned the relationship between creators and the characters they create. What must it feel like to be puppets of a creator, robbed of free will and forced by invisible hands? Is the general population, in a sense, robbed of such free will by local gods—politicians—who make everyone do their bidding? In Maaveeran , the protagonist, Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan), is guided by an ‘inner voice’ (inspired by Stranger Than Fiction?) into performing great deeds he would much rather not. At one point, he asks aloud in frustration—at writer-director Madonne Ashwin?—why this ‘inner voice’ won’t have him singing songs and enjoying life. These are such fascinating moments in this smart film that shows that ‘commercial entertainment’ doesn’t need to come at the cost of an inventive premise or its sincere exploration.

Director: Madonne Ashwin

Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Mysskin, Aditi Shankar, Sunil, Vijay Sethupathi

Unfortunately for the film’s protagonist, Sathya, Maaveeran isn’t about its central character finding love, dancing about, and capping everything off with a marriage. The film, in fact, begins with a cliched story (presented in animated black-and-white visuals) of a brave man rescuing a princess—but as the heroine Nila (Aditi Shankar) tells Sathya a while into the film, no one wants to read such a generic story… an advice that results in Sathya using his comic strip to channel real issues he observes from the vantage point of his Makkal Maaligai housing board unit.

The film asks the fascinating question of whether he’s a coward for channelling his social consciousness only into his art form. Maaveeran , likeably, doesn’t get sanctimonious in these portions and retains a wonderful sense of humour (an enjoyable aspect in the director’s first film, Mandela , as well). The hero of that film, Yogi Babu, is a riot here too—and here too, he is presented with much dignity. Even in his absence, the film has many laugh-out-loud moments, like when the ‘predictive voice-over’ guides Sathya in a fight and suddenly gets descriptive about his valour being admired by a woman from the audience. An exasperated Sathya exclaims, “Romba mukkiyam!” and it’s impossible not to laugh at what feels like meta-commentary of many films that often get side-tracked by the need to pander to forced elements like a love angle.

But  this  film doesn’t make that mistake or get too carried away by the Sathya-Nila relationship. Nila remains in the periphery, while a more fundamental woman character is Sathya’s mum (an excellent Saritha). Not reducing her to a wailing mother without an opinion is one of many admirable writing choices in this film. Where another mother might prioritise the safety of her son over all else (how many times have we heard them scream, " Unakku edhukku da idhelaam ?", Sathya’s mother is furious that he  won’t  risk his safety in the pursuit of justice. It also gives you a hint of what her relationship with her late husband (Sathya’s father) must have been founded on. Occasionally, she takes it to extremes (like a casual brutal comment about Sathya) but given that this woman has a proper character arc which sees her make a transformation in the opposite direction to Sathya, I didn’t mind these small exaggerations at all.

Like Madonne Ashwin’s first film, Mandela , this one too speaks of corrupt politicians and their all-consuming intent to preserve and wield power. The chief villains are a Housing and Urban Development Minister, MN Jeyakodi (Mysskin, who seems to bring alive Sathya’s caricatures) and his assistant (Sunil, with such screen presence). The former is likened to the god of death, Yama, with some framing (horns from a portrait seeming like they are a part of Jeyakodi’s head) too adding to this idea. The film speaks of the importance of standing up to injustice, no matter the odds, no matter the consequences.  “Yamane thavaru seidhaalum thatti ketpen ”.  It’s a film that makes such an idealistic appeal to our conscience. The evil minister might be a horrible adversary for a slum-dwelling, poor cartoonist to take on, but as the heroine says, “ Amaichar naalum manushan dhaane? ”

The cowardice-to-courage transition is a staple of hero-emergence films that many stars have built their careers on. Sivakarthikeyan is terrific here—the humour, yes, but also the unique fight sequences that must not have been easy to perform at all. In presenting this coward-to-fighter transformation, I liked that the film isn’t about fighting prowess or outwardly strength. It’s about the inner switch of resistance getting turned on, a switch that will likely cost you everything but give you the sort of joy that few people will encounter in a lifetime. Nila speaks of this when she underplays the fear of death by saying it comes for everyone anyway. Maaveeran excels in these spaces without seeming indulgent or losing out on easy entertainment. This must have been a delicate balance to maintain.

There’s just so much to chew on and discuss, which is usually a sign of a good film. In Maaveeran , you might not be wrong in interpreting everything after the hospital ‘death’ sequence as a fantasy. At the centre is the beautiful idea of a man who’s even afraid to commit suicide turning into a man who becomes capable of self-sacrifice for the benefit of strangers. As for the ‘mind-voice’ itself, you can process it as a ‘super-power’—or as I did, a dramatisation of our conscience, the inner voice so stifled by all the noise. Perhaps that’s why there’s something about deafness at the end.

Sure, the villains needed to be fleshed out a bit more, and I’d have liked to learn more about that deliciously strange friendship between the characters played by Mysskin and Sunil. Sunil’s character, especially, seems to possess a lot of unrealised promise. As for Mysskin, my most favourite moment from the film is when Mysskin’s Jeyakodi, towards the end, draws a parallel between Sathya’s condition and his own life. But yes, the film does feel a bit stretched and it does feel like some ideas play out better in the head than when they actually happen—like that underwater-anchor scene or that extended building-collapse-rescue scene. The music (by Bharath Sankar) helps though, making the quirky subject matter quite accessible, without ever selling out too easily.

It's a time in our cinema when talented filmmakers like Madonne Ashwin are showing that they are unafraid of punching up. This film asks questions of slum resettlement policies and how they are executed, while not losing sight of being an accessible entertainer. It’s a hard task really, and the film slips in phases, but there’s so much to like—including how the voice-overs are never allowed to get tedious or monotonous—that I have no hesitation forgiving it for the lapses.

Walking out of the film, I heard a few refer to the film as a superhero subject. Even if I didn’t necessarily process it so, it’s easy to see the temptation. In an era of great intellectual confusion—when all sides seem at once right and wrong—being able to listen to your conscience, your inner voice,  is , I suppose, a superpower. For this reason, superhero fatigue or not, Maaveeran is a ‘superhero’ I didn’t mind at all.

Maaveeran Review: Sivakarthikeyan’s non-heroic act is brilliant in this solid entertainer

Director madonne ashwin’s 'maaveeran', starring sivakarthikeyan and mysskin, is a clever take on superhero films. the social commentary, sivakarthikeyan’s performance and dialogues are a huge plus, says our review..

Listen to Story

Sivakarthikeyan's Maaveeran released in theatres on July 14.

  • Maaveeran released in theatres on July 14.
  • Sivakarthikeyan, Mysskin and Aditi Shankar play lead roles.
  • The film is directed by Madonne Ashwin.

Release Date: 14 Jul, 2023

Madonne Ashwin made his debut as a filmmaker with Yogi Babu-starrer, 'Mandela'. The film is a political satire with a solid screenplay. His second film, 'Maaveeran', is cut from the same cloth and stars Sivakarthikeyan, who is on his track to be the next big superstar in the Tamil film industry. Let’s find out how the film fared.

'Maaveeran' begins with a comic strip series where a hero (Maaveeran) saves a princess (Ilavarasi in Tamil) from a crumbling building. The Madonne Ashwin directorial's one-liner is just this. Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan) is a comic strip artist living in a slum. The local body minister Jayakodi (Mysskin) constructed a housing board and made the people living in the slum relocate. However, the apartment is poorly constructed, flouting all possible rules.

Meanwhile, Sathya meets with an accident and hallucinates. How does Sathya, a man who is a coward and doesn’t believe in confronting any problem in life, help the people and himself?

Madonne Ashwin is a solid filmmaker in recent times. In fact, 'Maaveeran' is easily one of the best-made films of this year so far. 'Maaveeran' is a term used for someone who emerges as a hero of the masses. Now, this is a done-to-death storyline, but the treatment that Ashwin has given this screenplay is brilliant. Throughout the film, the high moments come at frequent intervals and keep you glued to the seats.

It is also interesting to see the hero play a coward as opposed to a man with superhero powers. And who better than Sivakarthikeyan to portray the role nonchalantly? Sathya is flawed in every possible way. His mom (Saritha) is courageous, but he instructs her to adjust in life and not revolt. All he wants is for his mother and sister to lead a peaceful life without any confrontation. But, what happens when your everyday life is a struggle?

For example, take the sequence where the housing board engineer misbehaves with Sathya’s sister (Monisha) in their house. As a brother, Sathya is fuming with anger, but when he tries to confront him, he is worried about what would happen if he’s not there. And then his fear took over. The layers in Sivakarthikeyan’s character make the role more enjoyable.

Madonne Ashwin’s strength lies in how he incorporates social commentary with humour. It worked the best in 'Maaveeran', thanks to Sivakarthikeyan and Yogi Babu’s rollicking performances, which leaves you in splits.

Maaveeran, in the last act, could be a little formulaic with predictable heroic elements. But the final payoff does work to a larger extent. Sivakarthikeyan, as a feared comic artist, is exceptional in this role. Be it the humour or when he goes through the transformation, you root for him throughout. Before the release, the makers revealed that Vijay Sethupathi had given voice-over in the film. Sivakarthikeyan’s Sathya reacts in life after hearing the voice in his head. And Ashwin’s cleverness in using the voice-over added a new dimension to the commercial entertainer.

Aditi Shankar plays Nila, a sub-editor, in the film. She just acts as a template heroine, who motivates the hero when he is low on confidence. Mysskin’s corrupt politician act is enjoyable as well, and so does Sunil’s performance. After Sivakarthikeyan, it was Yogi Babu who stole the show.

'Maaveeran' is a film that has closure for every single conflict. Every conflict is resolved and given proper justification, which makes it more enjoyable. Dialogues are an asset in the film and when they make you think, while making you laugh, it’s when you understand the intelligence of the filmmaker. Music by Bharath Sankar is a huge plus for 'Maaveeran'.

'Maaveeran' is yet another solid entertainer that makes you enjoy and retrospect. It brings forth prevailing issues, such as corruption, poverty and petty politics. But, it is also a character study of how people will have to revolt for their basic rights.

3.5 out of 5 stars for Maaveeran. Published By: K Janani Published On: Jul 14, 2023 --- ENDS --- ALSO READ | Sivakarthikeyan at 'Maaveeran' event: I take responsibility when my films fail

Maaveeran Review - Cracker of a Commercial Entertainer!

PUBLISHED DATE : 14/Jul/2023

Maaveeran Review - Cracker of a Commercial Entertainer!

Maaveeran is a fantasy action drama starring Sivakarthikeyan, Aditi Shankar and Mysskin in the lead roles.

Premise : Sivakarthikeyan and the rest of the people in his area are shifted to a high-rise apartment in the name of Government scheme. Turns out it is a scam as the building is poorly constructed to loot money. The livelihood of the poor goes for a toss and the situation demands a ‘Maaveeran’.

Writing/ Direction:

The starting point of the movie where the poor people are made to vacate their native in the name of welfare is a familiar one. But we have not really seen a story in detail about what happens to the people after accepting the offer. Hence the story becomes fresh and fortunately the development is done exceptionally well. The apartment in which most of the movie takes place is beautifully established at the beginning by covering many aspects of various families living there, quickly without wasting time. Soon after the payoffs are done which takes the story forward, the pace never drops till the interval, as the unique selling point which is the voice-over the hero alone hears is also introduced within 45 minutes into the movie. Director has cleverly described the world the story is going to revolve and has smartly played with it. Thoroughly entertaining with so many lively comedies, the conflict is also strong and the fantasy element offers aplenty. The whistle-worthy mass moments are so naturally incorporated with the script which even a general movie-goer would be excited to see. The scenes between the hero and the villain are also done right, with a mix of seriousness and quirkiness at the same time. The film is nowhere preachy, but the underlying message is crystal clear. Characters are superbly designed, in a way we would be in sync with them at any given time. There are times the film slipped, especially in the second half. The momentum falls when the second half starts, certain places are flat, but thankfully it is only till a point. However there could have been some trimming when the story stays still until that mega plot-point arrives. The climax could have definitely been better, it tries for a dramatic finish. The ending is solid, but the sequence that leads to it lacks finesse.

Performances :

Knockout performance from Sivakarthikeyan, a character which every actor would be delighted to play, is the rise of a common man to a hero, which will easily and instantly connect with everyone. No nonsense romantic scenes for Aditi Shankar, she plays a role which is valuable to the story. Mysskin’s character is well designed, he is outrightly bad which is boring but there are some interesting layers to his life which make his presence interesting. Telugu actor Sunil plays the villain’s pawn, an important role and he has played it neatly knowing its strength. In-form Yogi Babu is always a joy to watch, full marks for his timing comedies and counter punches along with the apt story situations.

Technicalities :

Bharath Sankar’s songs are not great, but not bad at the same time. However they shine along with the visuals, the choreography of the opening kuthu number is terrific and hands down SK’s best till date. He wins big with the background score by showing so much variety. With a solid theme in hand, he didn’t just stick to it but went with different tunes for every fight scene. Excellence in cinematography, wide range of shots and the cameraman cracks all the angles perfectly. The DI quality overall and lighting of the night shots are first class. Many sharp cuts but the film could have been scissored a bit in the second half as the story didn’t really require so much time to convey its point. Topical stunt choreography, such a great team effort makes way for some gripping action blocks.

Cracker of an entertainer that is packaged with theatre moments throughout but never goes out of the story. Second half could have been crisper, yet a paisa-vasool flick with many interesting elements.

Maaveeran - Clear Winner!
