easy things to draw-eye

An eye is fairly easy to draw. So it is a great place for beginners who are interested in portrait drawing to start. To achieve accurate proportions with the eye, start by measuring. Draw a circle for the iris, then mark the top, bottom, inner corner and outer corner of the eye. Draw a guide to show the angle of the eye, from the inner corner to the outer corner. This makes drawing the outline easier, as it’s a case of joining up the markers.

If you’re not as confident with shading , start with the darkest areas first. The darkest areas are the pupil, the outer edge of the iris and the eyelashes. It’s helpful to get some different drawing tools to help with shading like softer graphite pencils (6B or 8B). Soft pencils will enable you to achieve a greater tonal range in your drawings. So you can draw those dark shadows.

Make sure to sharpen your graphite pencil when drawing the eyelashes! Another tip is to use a kneaded eraser or a Tombow Mono Zero eraser to lift highlight details for the finishing touches.

Draw a super easy cupcake with a large swirl of icing. Start by drawing curved line for the base of the cupcake. Then, add two lines for the sides of the cake. Next, draw a big spiral for the icing. Finally, add some sprinkles on top! Get your colouring pencils out and shade the icing whatever colour you like!

easy things to draw dog

You can draw a dog starting from just three circles! Use the circles as guides to measure the proportions of the head, torso and feet. Then, add in some details, like fur, the eyes, a collar and a nose. You could keep it as a contour drawing like this, or you could do some shading. Check out our guide on drawing techniques for some tips.

Pumpkins are fun to draw, especially around autumn time when spooky season is just around the corner. Draw this with markers , pencil or ink pen. Start by drawing a oval shape for the pumpkin. Then, add the segments and stem. If you’re drawing this for Halloween, draw triangles for eyes and a wide mouth to create the decoration. To finish it off, colour in your pumpkin orange.

easy things to draw-cat

Another great and easy thing to draw is a cat. Just like with the dog drawing, start with three circles to guide you. Then draw over the guides, making the head more defined, drawing the ears, back, tail and paws. Don’t forget to draw some texture on the outline for fur.

When it comes to drawing details, these can feel tricky at first, but spend some time mapping out where they will go. You can always create markers for where the eyes and nose go, then rub these out once you’re sure of the placement. The most important thing when you’re getting started with drawing is practice ! So if you don’t like how your first drawing turned out, grab a sketchbook and try again.

Lips are definitely one of the easiest things to draw. Start by sketching a curved line for the top lip. Then, add another curved line below it for the bottom lip. To finish it off, use a red pencil to colour in your lips. Now you’ve had a go at drawing eyes and lips, you can try to draw a face or a head !

easy things to draw-panda

Pandas are cute, round and easy to draw! Their shape is mainly made up circles that you can edit and refine to create a more detailed drawing. Start by drawing the circle guides lightly with a pencil. It also helps to divide the face into half then half again for the eyes and the nose. Then sketch the details, paying attention to where the contours of the outline is located in relation to the circular guides. Pandas are black and white, so get your graphite pencil , or charcoal pencil and colour in the eyes, ears, nose, arms and legs. If you’re drawing with charcoal instead of graphite, we have a blog on charcoal drawing ideas so you can find some more inspiration.

This easy cherry drawing is perfect for beginners! Start by sketching a small circle for the cherry. Then, add two curved lines on either side to form the stem. Colour the fruit in red and use a green pencil to colour in the stem.

An umbrella

draw an umbrella

Umbrellas are a fun thing to draw or doodle in your sketchbook, colour it in with bright colours, or draw it as part of a larger scene. Although the shape looks complex at first glance, it’s pretty simple when broken into its basic shapes. Draw a triangle as a guide and a line coming down the middle for the handle. Then, turn the triangle into a dome shape and create several smaller domes and tips of the canopy.

Colour the umbrella with whatever medium you like! Whether that’s coloured pencils or marker pens !

Draw your favourite type of cactus. Botanical drawings are perfect for beginners as they’re easy to do and you can add as much or as little detail as you like. Start by drawing a long, cylindrical shape for the cactus. Then, add small lines coming off it to create the spines. To finish it off, colour everything in green. If you want, draw flowers on the top of the cactus.

draw a daisy

A daisy is one of the easiest flowers to draw. This is because the petals are all similar in shape and size. You can start with two circles and an organic shaped line for the stem. You don’t have to be too precise when drawing your guides, as daisies are not perfectly symmetrical. When drawing the petals, make them similar in size and make them overlap slightly. As always, a splash of colour can bring a drawing to life, colour your artworks with coloured pencils , markers , watercolours or whatever art medium you like using. Or you can leave it as a sketch if you don’t have the extra materials to hand.

Mountain and lake

mountain

Mountains are easy things to draw, the rock shapes are organic and don’t have to be perfect. Simply outline your mountain, then fill in some details, like ripples on the lake, or trees in the foreground. You can even use ink pen and use some interesting shading techniques like hatching or stippling to fill in the shadow tones. When drawing landscapes, the success of the drawing relies on the composition of the piece and the way that elements are spaced and arranged. If you’re planning on spending some time on your final piece, plan the composition first with a few composition sketches to test the arrangement of different elements.

Faces are fairly complex to draw, but once you break the process down into steps, it can feel less intimidating. First, measure the proportions. This is the most important step, as it will determine how the rest of your drawing looks. Then, start with the eyes and work your way down to the nose and mouth. Finally, add the ears, hair and any other details. Remember to take your time with this one!

This drawing will test your shading skills. It’s easy to create a realistic looking water droplet, that looks as if it’s dripping off the page! Just make sure that you get the values right in the highlights and the shadows. For the highlights at the end, you could even use a white gel pen , to make the water droplet look more contrasted and realistic.

Tent and campfire

draw a tent

This one is for those who love camping. Draw an easy tent with a campfire. This drawing idea is great for beginners, as the shapes are fairly simple. If you want, give it a pop of colour once you’ve finished the outline. You could even take the drawing further by drawing some trees or mountains surrounding the tent, a moon and stars in the night sky.

Draw a majestic lion with pencil. Use a softer pencil , like a B or 2B so you can shade the drawing once you’ve finished the outline. When drawing the guides to measure the proportions, make sure to sketch lightly so you can easily erase the lines afterwards. A kneaded eraser is a great drawing tool for lifting pencil lines without damaging the paper. The great thing about this drawing tutorial, is that you can watch and follow along with it in real time, so you can see each step individually.

draw a doughnut

Draw a doughnut and grab some coloured pencils to detail the sprinkles. Make your doughnut any colour you like, make sure to use bright colours for the highlights on the icing and the sprinkles to create definition in your drawing.

Cameras look tricky to draw, but you can break it down into simple shapes. Draw four circles for the lens and a rectangle for the body, then work on refining the features and adding details. Draw it with an ink pen, like in this tutorial, or start with a pencil drawing so that you can erase lines if you make a mistake.

Cup of coffee

coffee cup

This is another great easy illustration to add to your sketchbook. When colouring the drawing, make sure to blend the shadows into the midtones to create a smooth appearance on the cup.

This is a fantastic drawing to complete with charcoal , this is because it blends easily, so you can create reflections in the water. The most difficult part of this drawing is getting the angles and perspective right, so pay attention when drawing the outline. Draw the outline lightly with a hard graphite pencil, so that the lines are easier to erase. To blend pencil on the water reflections, get a tortillion and smooth the lines.

Continuous line drawing

continuous line drawing

Try completing a continuous line drawing —this is more of a drawing exercise but it’s a fun idea to practice in the sketchbook . To complete a continuous line drawing, look at your reference , you could use this reference of two hands as a starting point. Then try to complete your drawing using one line, without taking your pen or pencil off of the paper. This will exercise your skills in precision, as well as observation. Plus, the results look unique and striking.

This drawing is a little more complex than some of the others on the list, but it’s a rewarding one! But once you’ve practiced some of the other easier drawings in this guide, you might feel ready to tackle something more challenging.

The first step in this drawing is establishing the perspective of the viewer. This means drawing a horizon line and a vanishing point, for this one point perspective drawing. The roof and base of the structure should all point towards the vanishing point.

This perspective will give your drawing a realistic look. When it comes to shading the drawing, make sure that you’ve established a lightsource, in the case of this tutorial, the lightsource is coming from the right hand side. If you’re not confident with trying a more complex drawing, you could start small. Smaller drawings tend to feel easier, so get a sketchbook and practice, then scale it up when you feel ready.

Hot air balloon

hot air balloon easy drawing

Hot air balloons are easy to draw and look bright and colourful on the page. This will exercise your skills at drawing spherical shapes and curved lines. Make sure to determine a light source when colouring the drawing in and rendering the highlights and shadows on the balloon to give it that realistic look. If you want to simplify the drawing even more, you could leave out the segments on the balloon section.

Create a realistic pear drawing. Whether you’re practising for a larger still life, or just want to draw some simple fruit shapes, this is an excellent lesson in shading. Look at the way the light bounces off the form and reflects from the surface. You don’t have to be too precise with the outline in this drawing, it’s the shading and contrast that makes this drawing stand out.

Figure drawing

figure drawing

This is one approach to creating an easy figure drawing, by starting with a gesture drawing. This involves measuring the height of the figure, then drawing the line of action to determine the body’s positioning. Then draw horizontal lines to show the angles of the joints of the figure. Once you’ve established the proportions and angles of the body, you can join it all up with an outline. This provides a fantastic base for a more complex figure drawing. If you’re interested in portraiture, give our gesture drawing guide a read, so you can try it for yourself. It’s an excellent introduction to academic drawing styles.

Draw a rose complete with thorns and leaves. Start with the inner leaves and work your way outwards, drawing where they fold over. When it comes to shading, either colour the rose in with a bright red pencil , using a deeper red for the shadows beneath where the petals fold over, or use a graphite pencil .

Draw a cartoon portrait

easy things to draw for art homework

Create your own character and draw a cartoon portrait. Alternatively you could draw your favourite popular cartoon or game character. Cartoons are easier to draw than realistic portraits, as the features are often simplified. If you’re interested in comic art, or character design, filling a sketchbook with your own character drawings can be a fun way to practice.

Create flower doodles

Now you know step by step how to create a daisy and a rose, but what about creating some more flower drawings. These simple doodles can dress up any sketchbook page. Draw with a liner pen, or a fountain pen to create clean line drawings .

50+ Easy Drawing Ideas And Doodles For Beginners

Sometimes you feel like drawing, but you just don’t know what to draw.

And staring at a blank page really don’t help much either

So in this video, I’ll share some of my favorite things to draw when I’m bored.

Patterns & Zentangles

I normally like to start off by drawing some simple patterns, because drawing patterns is a great way to get your creative juices flowing.

So you can play around with some lines, circles, basic shapes, etc. and see what kind of unique patterns you can come up with by yourself

I started by drawing several teardrop shapes and filling them up with some really simple patterns.

But you can really make the patterns as complex or as simple as you want.

easy pattern drawing ideas

And of course, you don’t have to stick to teardrops, either. I also drew some circles, squares, ovals, etc. and then filled them with different patterns as well

You just want to make sure that whatever shape you want to fill with a pattern is actually large enough. Because you want enough space for the pattern to repeat itself several times. So normally, the more complex the pattern, the bigger the shape should be.

Simple Landscapes

Next up are some super simple landscapes. These are also very easy and fun to draw, But they are a little more difficult to design from scratch by yourself. So I normally like to look for some nice designs online and then replicate them.

The best place to get started is with some mountain landscapes, because they are super easy to draw. Basically, if you can draw triangles, you can draw these landscapes as well.

So as you can see, the first four drawings all feature mountains.

easy mountain doodle

And it’s also very easy to add new elements to the mountain landscapes. So for example, for the second drawing I combined the mountains with a sun, and for the third drawing added a tree in front of the mountains. So you can really add your own unique spin to this kind of landscape drawings.

Besides mountains, a lot of these simple landscape drawings also feature the sun. Especially sunset and sunrise.

So I also wanted to draw a few of those as well.

easy sunrise drwaing

For the first two, I tried to draw a sunset or sunrise above the ocean. In the top half you can see the sun itself and in the bottom half you can see the reflection of the sun in the water.

And for the fourth one I decided to draw the sun rising up from behind the mountains in the morning.

And then I finished by drawing some super simple trees by just using straight lines.

easy tree drawing

Flowers & Plants

Flowers and plants are always super popular subjects to draw, so I started by drawing with a few floral branches.

Simply start by drawing the branch and then decorate it with leaves of various shapes and sizes.

easy flower drawing

You can look at some reference photos if you want to, but for these doodles I just came up with some random shapes that I liked on the fly. And I think they came out pretty nice.

I also drew a few potted plants and cacti. And with these drawings, it’s always fun to not only draw different kinds of plants, but also be creative with the flower pots themselves. So try to match the design of the flower pot with the plant itself.

easy plant drawing

If you like these drawings ideas, you might also want to check out my simple rose drawing ideas .

Cute Animals

Animals can be super intimidating to draw for most people, because it’s so difficult to draw a realistic looking animal. So I just wanted to share a few quick and easy animal doodles that basically anyone can draw.

easy snail drawing

As with any doodle, it’s really important to keep things as simple as possible. So don’t worry about the fur or scales or feathers. Just try to draw the most important parts that clearly identify the animal you want to draw.

So for the snail it’s the shell, for the jellyfish it’s the tentacles, for the hedgehog it’s the spines, etc.

Continuous Line Drawings

I only recently started practicing these one line drawings and continuous line drawing, and I have to say, I really like drawing them.

You basically want to capture the essence of an object with a single line that’s as short as possible.

Which sounds super easy, but once you try it, you’ll quickly realize that it can sometimes be extremely difficult to draw something with just a single line.

easy bird drawing

But that being said, I don’t think you need to be an amazing artist to draw these. You just need to try a lot of times.

In this video I’m just showing the successful drawings of course. But each of these drawings took me several times before I got something that I was happy with.

You’ll need to go through the trial and error process several times to find a design that really works. And then you need to practice that design several times, so you can draw it with confidence and you don’t need to stop halfway through or have very shaky lines.

If you are interested in these types of drawings, you should check out my continuous line rose drawing tutorial as well.

If you don’t know what to draw, you can always draw some food related items as well. So you can either draw what you had for breakfast or lunch, or you can draw your favorite foods.

easy bread drawing

I ate bread and some fruit for lunch, so I started by drawing different types of bread, fruit and vegetables. So you can see a loaf of bread, a baguette, a croissant, a pear, strawberry etc.

easy fruit drawing

You can really draw whatever you want. But in general, it’s easier to draw the individual ingredients than the final dish.

easy sushi drawing

So instead of drawing a board of spaghetti, you could draw the tomatoes and onions that go into the pasta sauce instead.

It is important to practice perspective for realistic drawing. If it has been a while or you have never drawn 2 point perspective, it is a good idea to review the rules of linear perspective first. A fun and easy drawing idea is to sketch a street corner in 2 point perspective where all horizontal straight lines converge to one of 2 vanishing points.

linear perspective - street corner

Aerial perspective is how tiny particles floating in the atmosphere change how things look the further in the distance they are.

Mountains in the background tend to be cooler in color, lighter in value, and have less detail than those in the foreground. While not terribly difficult to do in paint, it can be a challenging drawing exercise but it will certainly build your skills.

aerial perspective

When an object is perpendicular to the picture plane and stretches from the distance to the frame of the drawing, things can look distorted. Based on linear perspective, things closer to the picture plane will look much bigger than the same object that recedes in the distance.

foreshortening

Value can be one of the most important elements of design for creating realistic and engaging artwork.

Roughly drawing a scene or object with little detail, but emphasizing subtle value changes through exaggeration can help an artist understand how the lighting of the scene affects the objects and the overall composition.

value studies

Negative space is the area around the objects in your drawing and can be more important than the shapes of the objects themselves for getting the proportion of things accurate.

Try drawing around the outlines, or contours, of the objects in your scene to make them “appear.” Avoid the temptation to outline the object first.

negative space

Our minds tend to trick us when it comes to drawing objects or scenes. Trying to make 3-dimensional objects look real on a 2-dimensional surface can take some mental gymnastics.

Several scholars on the subject suggest that turning your reference photograph upside down distracts the part of the brain that tries to trick us. Give it a try!

upside down objects

There are so many foods that come in a dizzying variety of forms that this article could be filled with just food ideas. Still, life is a genre with a long history, and artists use diverse approaches to portray simple objects, often involving food. Here is just a small sample of the options available to you to inspire your drawing practice.

Candy, packaged meats, chips, and pickled vegetables are just some of the food products that provide interesting characteristics for you to practice your sketching skills. Food labels and containers are designed to catch the consumer’s eye, so their colors, fonts, and textures make for excellent drawing ideas.

packaged foods

Andy Warhol became famous for his Campbell’s soup can works. This is partly because people are attracted to things they are familiar with, and the tomato soup can was in most households at one point or another.

pop culture icon foods

The traditional still life set-up with vases, grapes, and other objects showing abundance and elevated economic status has become cliche and doesn’t command attention the way it used to. But, the insides of fruits and vegetables aren’t as common and often have interesting shapes and textures.

inside fruit

While people are attracted to things they are familiar with, they are also intrigued by novel, unusual things. We tend to think longer and harder about unique things or situations than those we see every day.

By pairing dissimilar objects together in a still life, you can also create the foundation for obvious or subtle narratives to creep into the minds of the viewer.

foods paired with unusual objects

There are many types of candy that come in bright colors, have interesting textures, and cool shapes. This is another drawing idea that is best drawn in colored pencil.

Bottles, packages, and other containers of condiments offer many characteristics that will develop drawing skills for artists of any level. These subjects also often carry the iconic recognition discussed earlier.

A bowl of perfectly ripe fruit can project positive feelings for a variety of reasons, but sometimes artists want to suggest dark or brooding feelings. Rotting or decaying fruit or other foods can be metaphors for those things in our lives that aren’t so happy and make for an interesting still life. Many popular artworks are anything but happy.

decaying food

In the 21st century, technology is undeniably ubiquitous and encompasses a vast array of kinds of items, from cell phones to automobile features, to retro items like T.V.s from the 1960s. Here are some drawing prompts that are sure to inspire those fascinated by technology.

It seems as though trending electronic devices change weekly, and capturing these items in a drawing can increase the appeal of your work to audiences.

popular devices

Don’t just focus on the objects themselves; the insides of electronic components are filled with interesting colors, shapes, and different patterns.

inside electronics

Older technological devices can be visually interesting because we haven’t seen them much recently, and certain segments of our population may have never seen them before.

Tools don’t have to be hammers and saws that we typically associate with the term; they can be anything a person (or animal) uses to complete a task. Such a widely interpreted definition can provide drawing subjects to last weeks, months, or years. Tools can be arranged like a still life or be used as an added change to other contexts.

Power tools carry associations with noise, movement, progress, and even danger. These things can subconsciously get the viewer’s heart rate to increase, which means they are responding viscerally to your work.

power tools

Hand tools can evoke more nostalgic associations and suggest more craftsmanship than power tools. Any hand-operated mechanical object can fit this category. If you’re looking to communicate themes of reminiscence or melancholy, an old-fashioned hand drill may be a better choice than a cordless power drill.

hand tools

Just as in older technology, old tools often have great shapes, materials, and designs. It’s fun to find an old tool and try to figure out what it could have been used for in its prime.

old tools

There are tons of kitchen gadgets and apparatuses. People tend to have positive associations with food, which can extend to the tools used to make them. Interesting textures, patterns, and materials can make for a visually appealing drawing.

cooking tools

Take a stroll down the hardware aisle of a home improvement store, and you will be met with a wealth of potential drawing ideas. Close-ups, organized displays, or randomly strewn nails, screws, or other obscure hardware are great to sketch.

Try looking around your house for things that could be considered tools, but that you wouldn’t normally think of when prompted with the word tool.

tools not usually considered

Appliances are tools, and just like the inside of fruit or technological devices, the insides of these household items can give you cool ideas!

the inside of your appliances

Scientific drawings, landscapes, still lifes, and other artistic genres include plants in a variety of ways. Individually or with other specimens, plants are great to study through drawing and sketches. Here are a few easy drawing ideas to get you started.

Potted plants are great because they can be moved to capture the best lighting or compositional arrangement, and the pots themselves can be interesting to draw.

Whether in your backyard or at an arboretum, gardens can provide numerous drawing ideas. Additionally, gardens rarely stay the same, so you can revisit the same garden over time for different perspectives or perhaps a series showing how seasons affect the botanical life.

Georgia O’Keeffe was well known for her close-up paintings of flowers and other plant life. Drawing subject matter that is half abstracted and half recognizable can create interest and engage your audience on a conceptual level.

close-up on plant parts

Like technology, vehicles are a part of almost everyone’s life in some way. Vehicles come in so many different sizes and forms and are unique depending on their purpose or environment, which provides the artist with a never-ending pool of drawing ideas.

Old bikes, new bikes, motorbikes, spokes of the wheels, springs under the seats, bells, and other aspects of bikes can be fun to draw. Whether you love the Tour de France or just ride your bike to work or school, you can stay busy with this subject for a while.

In-line skates, older lace-up skates, and skates that clip onto your regular shoes all have interesting features that can offer interesting sketching ideas.

roller skates

You don’t have to be a gearhead to draw cars. Whether antique cars from the early 1900s or futuristic cars from your imagination, automobiles can be crafted in many styles.

cars

Visual art is largely about how artists see their world. Cars are arguably one of our most intimate spaces, and showing your view of that part of your life can communicate a lot. Using the rearview mirror or other strategic parts of your car’s interior can add subtle symbolic meaning.

the interior of your car

For younger artists that don’t drive yet, scooters are often the way to get around quickly and easily. Motorized scooters and self-propelled scooters have character and will likely have reminiscent associations for a lot of people.

Scooters

An imaginary alien rocket ship, actual space vessels from NASA or Starlink, and imaginary futuristic transportation vessels can provide an abundance of drawing ideas. Don’t be afraid to get creative with these; the sky’s not the limit, outer space is!

Antique vehicles have a lot of character and have changed a lot over the years. Old trucks, cars, and motorcycles have great lines and shapes and, in many cases, interesting weathering or patinas.

Instruments

Many artists are interested in more than just one art form. For those that also play musical instruments, you can express your passion for both domains (visual art and music) in one artwork.

Drawing a musical instrument as the main subject of a sketch or drawing, much as you would a rendering of a person, can show your respect and reverence for the object as well as the discipline. Using dramatic light and subduing all other elements of the drawing will communicate a sense of importance to the viewer.

Much like Georgia O’Keeffe’s close-ups of flowers, instruments have interesting parts and components that can be visually appealing on an abstract level. One instrument has the potential for 100 or more different compositions of close-up perspectives.

close-up of instrument parts

A grouping of instruments alone or an ensemble of players with their instruments can be a great subject to draw. Using fluid, gestural lines and marks can give the feeling of the instruments in action causing the audience to imagine music playing in their minds.

ensembles

Listening to music can put you in the right mood to draw. Illustrating your favorite song with instruments, notes, and other music notation will allow your passion for music to shine in your drawing.

playing a song

Creating artwork using toys as the subject matter can suggest a variety of narratives or elicit many different emotions. Toys can be nostalgic, uplifting, and even scary, depending on the context and how you choose to portray them. Since color is a big part of most toys, this would be the time to sharpen your colored pencils.

Many toys are instantly recognizable and have deep associations for us as our childhood is the most influential time of our lives. They can be drawn as is or placed in a variety of contexts to influence the viewer’s interpretation.

pop culture icon toys

By now, you may have sensed a theme of objects being portrayed through close-ups of their parts. We are used to seeing objects as whole, so when an artist isolates parts of the objects, we see them in a new light which tends to make the drawing more interesting.

Many artists personify toys and place them in real-life, human situations for humor or to convey a particular narrative. Humor is a great way to engage viewers of your artwork.

in real life situations

Board games are a big part of many people’s lives and bring up fond memories of childhood. Drawing game pieces or other components of a game is a great idea for a simple sketch that can help you work on things like proportion or to practice shading.

board games

Many people have positive feelings about animals, and their passion can show in their drawings while others are afraid of animals and might choose to explore their fears through art. Either way, there are a lot of options when considering animals as subjects for your art.

Drawing animals in their habitat will allow you to improve your drawing skills in animal anatomy as well as those of natural environments and landscapes. Artists often struggle with what to use as a background, so placing the animals in their habitat gives you the main subject and an appropriate setting.

animals and their habitat

Pet portraits are very popular, and some artists make their living off of pet portrait commissions. Or you can draw your own pet as a way to celebrate how much they mean to you. As mentioned in the early section about instrument portraits, there are a variety of options on how to portray pets as the main subject in your drawing.

animal portraits

When first learning to draw animals, as with any being, it can be helpful to start with individual body parts.

One of the hardest parts of drawing humans and other animals is getting the proportions of each of the body parts to the body as a whole correct. If you build your confidence in the individual parts first, you can then focus on the whole animal better.

Wild animals can be majestic and beautiful. Fur, feathers, and scales allow artists to perfect their drawing skills with texture that can be applied to other subjects.

Perhaps you enjoy birdwatching which would make drawing birds perfect for you! Or, a trip to the zoo with your smartphone camera will give you resource images to sketch from for original drawings.

You might choose to portray a dead animal as a symbolic representation of sadness, or you may want to convey some social message about how our society treats animals. Artworks don’t have to be limited to positive, happy subjects.

dead animal

Cartoons and comics have personified animals for decades. Putting animals in environments and situations in place of humans can create interest and humor.

animals in human situations

Butterflies, spiders, and beetles are just a few of the hundreds of thousands of crawly or flying creatures you can use as inspiration. Interestingly segmented bodies, colorful patterns, and multitudes of appendages all add visual interest to some cool subjects for drawing ideas.

Life Drawing Ideas

One of the best ways to improve your drawing ability is to draw everyday life. Often, life drawing is intimidating, but it is no different from drawing from photographs; the added difficulty is all in your head. Even when drawing the figure , it’s all about reducing things to basic shapes first and then adding detail after you have gotten your proportions correct.

If you want to get good fast at drawing people, sit at a park bench, or a seat in a museum, and work on drawing the people that pass by.

Getting the essence of a human’s pose in just a few lines and 10 or 20 seconds is what gesture drawings are all about. When you draw people in motion several times for an hour or so each, you will undoubtedly see growth.

crowd of people

A favorite subject of many famous artists, drawing yourself from a reflection in a mirror means you don’t need a model or a photograph. It can feel a little weird at first, but after a few tries, you’ll be hooked.

self portrait

People with life experiences often develop character in the features of their bodies, especially their faces.

While society may look at wrinkles and changes in the skin due to aging as negative, they can make people look more interesting and good candidates for drawing.

Choosing celebrities with unique or elaborate hairstyles is a great practice too!

people with charater

As mentioned earlier in the section about animals, figure drawing poses can be challenging and intimidating. If you are new to figure drawing, it may be helpful to start with individual features, such as drawing hands, legs, or facial features.

Once you gain some confidence in the distinct parts, you can start putting them together as a whole figure. And don’t be ashamed to use references. Here are some great figure drawing poses you can use.

Perhaps you even practice drawing individual eyes, noses, mouths, and ears before you take on the task of drawing faces.

Beings and Other Cool Drawing Ideas

Because small mistakes in the proportion of one body part to another are obvious in a human figure, it may be less intimidating to practice with imaginary beings. Aliens from outer space or fantastical creatures don’t have a standard, you can be freer with your drawing since there isn’t anything, in reality, to compare them to.

Extra-terrestrial beings have been portrayed in drawings, paintings, and movies for ages. This great drawing idea gives you the freedom to be as imaginative as you want, either taking characteristics from drawings you’ve seen or making up your alien from scratch. Check out these alien concepts for inspiration.

aliens

Much like aliens, there is plenty of room for creative license when drawing fantasy creatures. You might take inspiration from The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, or some other fantasy story.

A creative idea is to use a real animal as your foundation and change certain attributes or combine multiple creatures into one, much like mythical creatures of lore.

fantasy creatures

M.C. Escher was known for morphing one object or creature into another object or creature in stages within one artwork. Morphing creatures or objects is a great way to add some spice to a drawing that would otherwise be too simple or common.

morphed creatures

Landscapes don’t have to adhere to traditional farmland or fields with haystacks.

While artists like Van Gogh and Monet were able to add interest to those cliche subjects through their creative use of color and brushstrokes, looking at the idea of landscape through a different

lens can give your drawings more interest.

If you have a backyard and you spend enough time in it, you may be able to draw it from memory. What is unique about your backyard, and what does it look like to you? Remember, visual art is about how the artist experiences life, so instead of showing what your yard looks like, draw what it feels like.

your backyard

If you don’t have your own backyard, you can always visit a local park and try your hand at plein air art . An interesting take on this idea is to draw the same park during different seasons of the year. A place can look very different in the spring as compared to the summer, fall, or winter.

The surrealists created artworks based off of their dreams. Strange and eerie scenes were typical subjects for artists like Dali, Magritte, and Miro. A neat idea would be to draw a garden and add surreal elements.

Hiking trails often end at a scenic overlook or have beautiful, natural elements, such as waterfalls, along the way. Next time you hike, bring a small sketchbook that fits in your bag or pocket and sketch the beauty around you as you rest.

There can be a lot of character in cities, towns, and villages. Whether it is a place you see every day or somewhere you visit on vacation, there are countless cool drawing ideas hidden in every city.

There is an old adage, “Draw what you know.” Chances are, unless you’ve moved recently, you know your house pretty well. Instead of drawing your house straight on from the front, try drawing it from an unusual perspective or angle.

your house

Storefronts can have a lot of character with signs, awnings, window displays, or unique doorways. The next time you go to your favorite restaurant in town, snap a few pictures so you can get some drawing practice while celebrating a place you enjoy.

the block your favorite restaurant is on

As was mentioned before, people tend to be drawn to things they are familiar with. If you sketch a famous landmark, people may get more excited about your drawing than if it were somewhere they have never seen or visited. You can be inspired by places you’ve been or those you’d like to visit someday.

landmarks of your favorite city to visit

Using your imagination, take a city block, or a single building and draw it as if it were post-apocalyptic and weeds and vines have reclaimed the man-made structure. You can even draw buildings or structures that are dominated by gigantic creatures.

Architecture

There is a lot of room for creativity when drawing architecture. You might enjoy drawing mechanical drawings of buildings, or you might prefer looser renditions of buildings that show your own style. Perhaps you would like to sketch your dream house with all the fancy upgrades you can imagine.

Most people would recognize a drawing of the Taj Mahal or the Eiffel Tower.

A great drawing project is to practice drawing a well-known building that interests you in some way. Maybe it has personal significance for you, or maybe you just like the way it looks.

cultural architectural icons

Some cultures have homes that are visually distinct in style due to geographic locations and available materials. Studying a culture by sketching its architecture can be a good way to learn about its people and practices.

traditional cultural dwellings

Unusual things tend to be more interesting or at least curiosity provoking. Architects like Frank Gehry and Frank Loyd Wright have capitalized on this fact. Spending time drawing unique buildings or other architecture can be a fun challenge and a great way to get motivated and stay engaged.

unusual buildings

Combining real-life references with imagination helps to improve technical ability and, at the same time, grow your creative skills. An excellent idea for drawing is to draw a real city skyline, but then add your personal touches to show what you think the city might look like 50 or 100 years from now.

futuristic city

If you are looking for drawing ideas for kids, try having them sketch their room and suggest they rearrange the setup and decor in drawings. Whether they decide to change their real living space or not, they will have fun and learn the value of looking at things from different perspectives.

your bedroom

Either clean and organized or messy and chaotic, garages can have interesting features and contents that can serve as drawing prompts for many pages in your sketchbook.

your garage

Few people like to spend a lot of time waiting. An excellent drawing prompt is to sketch the waiting room of a doctor’s office or administrative lobby the next time you anticipate a long wait.

This is when keeping a small sketchbook in your pocket or bag can help relieve stress or reduce frustration.

waiting rooms

You can tell a lot about someone from their personal spaces. From the contents to how orderly things are kept, drawing your desk drawer can be a metaphorical self-portrait.

Literary Devices and Other Easy Drawing Ideas

To inject some fun into your artwork, try illustrating literary devices. Visual representations of old sayings or uses of language that are familiar can add some playfulness to your sketchbook.

A metaphor is saying 2 different things that have some similar characteristics are the same for comparison’s sake. “Life is a highway” is a metaphor that suggests some parts of life are similar to some parts of life even though they are obviously not one and the same.

metaphor

A pun is a play on words that twists the arrangement or sounds of words to change the meaning or present 2 possible meanings for the phrase or saying. Think dad jokes!

pun

Whew, this was a big list! But it doesn’t even scratch the surface of the potential drawing ideas for sketching or finished artworks. The point is, you just need to start sketching today. Whether you draw a Christmas tree, a teddy bear, a game controller, or a jack-o-lantern, sketching becomes contagious.

Once you start drawing regularly, you can return to this list, or use these ideas to inspire your own! If you’re new to drawing and would like some help with how to get started, check out this article on drawing practice .

A Happy Face

Drawing a happy face is a great starter, mainly because you can keep it so simple!

Pick up a piece of paper.

Now draw a circle. Inside that circle, add two dots for the eyes and a curved line for the mouth. There, you’re done!

a happy face, an easy drawing idea

Drawing a happy face this simple is great for warm-up. For when you want to draw something, but don’t know what.

When that happens, just start drawing small, simple drawings like these, and something will come up!

After that, you can start adding more complexity to your happy faces.

Try different styles and looks, more complex or less. There’s a lot to choose from, so experiment!

simple and easy plant drawings

I don’t often draw flowers and plants in general. However, sometimes it’s something I really enjoy drawing to wind down. Just drawing a simple cactus or succulent.

These can have very simple shapes like circles and ellipses, so it’s quite easy to draw them in a very cute and simplified way!

Alternatively, you can also just draw a simple stalk with some leaves! Look up simple plants and draw what you find the most beautiful.

A Friendly Ghost

Ghosts can be cute and actually quite easy to draw!

Just draw the shape of a round silo. About 90% of your ghost is done. Now all you need is to add two dots for the eyes and a line for the mouth.

Want to give it a little bit more personality? Instead of leaving the bottom of your ghost with a straight line, give it a wavy line!

a very easy drawing of friendly ghosts!

The eyes and mouth are also very customizable!

You can draw these cute eyes bigger, smaller, with eyelashes and bright spots.

And the same goes for the mouth! Draw it open, close, big or small smile, you choose.

Even when making simple drawings there are many options to give a more unique look to your art!

The moon is always a perfect subject for beginner artists to draw. By drawing the moon you get to practice your circles and curved lines! Drawing the outer space is always fun.

I’ve also mentioned this one as part of my 20 Cute Drawing Ideas list, which you can check right here.

You can draw a full moon, but also all the other phases that it goes through. Don’t be shy and add a little start or two.

simple drawing idea of the different phases of the moon

This is also a great chance for you to try different materials! Instead of picking a white piece of paper from your sketchbook, try drawing on black paper!

Get a white gel pen, soft pastels, or even chalk, and draw the moon with it. Here are some other art supplies you can try!

If you’re doing this digitally, do the same, draw on a black background. Experiment with different brushes and textures, it’s fun!

A Pair Of Cherries

Quick, simple, and easy! Cherries are another fun subject that comes to mind when I just want to draw something very simple and quick to wind down from work.

Two circles, joined by a small stalk. Go ahead and add a small leaf to it, to give it extra pizzazz.

adorable drawing of a pair of cherries

You can either draw it using just a pen and that’s it. Or, if you want something more colorful, use some red and green markers .

What about drawing a number of cherries, each with a different color? That could make a nice pattern!

A Cute Bird

Birds can be quite complex; however, you can draw them very simply and cartoony.

Look it up online for some ideas or even better: get an image of a bird.

Now draw the outline of that bird in your sketchbook.

a cute little yellow bird drawing

Alright, you have the main shape of your bird!

Now just add eyes, little legs, and maybe a wing or two!

Everything can be simplified by using basic shapes, so take advantage of that.

Trees are always a great one to draw since there are many different ways to tackle them.

You can draw a leafless tree. Only a trunk and branches. You also don’t need to be very clean with the branches.

You don’t need to be super organized with these, either. Random dots on top of the trunk of your tree, and you’re finished.

drawing of two different trees, a great and easy thing to draw

Try adding a flower or two even!

Another option is to just use very simple shapes: a rectangle for the trunk and a circle for the top.

Try different shapes for the top of your tree: an ellipse and a cloud shape could work.

You can even add some lights and make it a Christmas Tree Drawing!

Explore different options and have fun!

Stars are another example that can be drawn in several different ways.

This is another drawing prompt based on outer space. (I really like the universe and celestial spaces)

You can draw the usual star shape. But if you want to make things even easier for yourself, you can just draw something similar to an asterisk or a diamond shape!

easy drawing ideas : stars!

Add some dots around it, like they’re far away stars.

Stars tend to be bright, so you can do the same idea as with the moon: try drawing them on a dark background!

Hearts are always easy and cute… the simplified version, of course!

Drawing a real-life heart is very complex, and that’s not what we’re here for. Draw a pattern of tiny little hearts, like the ones we see in cartoons.

Draw them very simply with no details or add some stars around them or a highlight or two inside the heart.

a simple and cute heart drawing

Grab your sketchbook , doodle a few different things, look up different examples, and see what you like best!

Dogs are cute, so you don’t really need any more reasons to draw them.

The fun thing about drawing dogs is that there are many different breeds to choose from. You can keep it really simple or add as many details as you want!

simple drawing of a dog

I have a course on drawing dogs where I show you how to draw not only one but 3 different breeds of dogs in many different positions and perspectives.

My philosophy is to make drawing an easy and enjoyable hobby, so if you want to know more about drawing dogs, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this course!

Another option is, if you own a dog, inspire yourself in your furry friend.

This way, the whole process is even more fun and won’t bore you.

A Cup Of Coffee

Get inspiration from your morning coffee and draw it!

Draw a cute mug, filled with coffee, and don’t forget to add bits of steam leaving the cup.

simple drawing of a cup of coffee

The fun thing about coffee is that you can draw many different types of beverages. You can draw coffee with some cream on top, maybe with some sprinkles even.

You can draw a clear mug filled with a coffee latte. The milk and the coffee can even be layered, making a nice mix of colors there!

From simple black coffee to lattes and mochas, there are lots of fun choices to draw.

A Pair Of Boots

Hiking boots, heel boots, or rain boots. Better yet, do you own any kind of boots? Then take them out and draw them.

cute drawing idea of a pair of boots

Keep things simple. Easy and basic shapes will get you there. A boot can be made out of an ‘L’ shape.

Then all you need to do is add some details: laces, texture, color. As always there are many options to make your drawings more unique, so explore than and have fun!

I couldn’t recommend you to draw a dog and not a cat, right? In this blog we love both of them, so now it’s time for cats.

If you think that drawing a whole animal is too hard, then draw just the face.

The face of a cat is very unique with the big round eyes, little nose, and whiskers.

an easy drawing idea of a cat face!

You can keep things in a very simple art style by adding dots for the eyes or drawing them with big colored circles and a slit for the iris.

Go more realistic or cartoony; the choice is yours as long as you enjoy the process.

Again, if you own a cat, take the opportunity and use them for reference!

Smiling Lips

Admittedly, drawing a full face can be a bit too complex for a beginner artist. There’s just too much to get right.

Eyes, mouth, nose, ears… knowing not only how to draw them, but also drawing the right proportions and in their rightful places!

It’s one of the things that beginner artists struggle with and I was no exception.

drawing of smiling lips from a person

So, instead of drawing everything at once, take smaller steps.

Draw just some lips !

Thin or thick, with or without lipstick.

You can draw closed lips or open, showing some teeth! There’s a lot to learn with just lips, so take your time.

I promise I’m not going to mention every single animal. But bunnies are just too cute to pass.

And more than that, they’re simple to draw! Round face and long ears. Complete your cute bunny with a face, round body, and soft tail.

Use your pencil to draw very simple shapes, and you have a finished bunny!

bunny drawing with simple shapes

Just like with the cat you can choose between drawing just the face or going ahead and drawing the full body. The choice is yours. Just have fun with these simple drawings.

You can start with just the face and later on, when you feel more confident, draw the rest of the body!

A Basketball

Want to practice your circles? Then draw a basketball!

Start with a simple circle first. Repeat that as many times as you need.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to draw a perfect circle. We’re not perfect, so as long as it resembles a circle, it’s enough!

a simple basketball drawing, one of many easy drawing ideas

Then just add the familiar basketball lines and add some color.

This is one of those very easy things to draw, but can be quite fun to sketch!

If you want to go a step further with your basketball drawings, draw them in movement. Drawing some slight oval shapes instead of circles can be a nice change of pace!

We’ve covered plants above, so now it’s the time for flowers!

There are soo many to choose from, so either pick a favorite of yours or pick one that looks the easiest to draw.

Personally, I think daisies, pansies, or even sunflowers have some of the easiest shapes, so they can be a good starter!

easy and simple drawing of a flower

A pretty button, along with some colorful petals. Don’t forget to add a leaf or two for some extra details.

You can even add a butterfly on top!

A Pair Of Glasses

There are many different types of glasses, made out of different shapes.

However, the lenses are always made out of basic shapes like rectangles, squares, or circles.

If you can draw those, you can draw a pair of glasses!

cute drawing of a pair of glasses

Lookup for different pairs of glasses and draw them. Take the chance and add some color to them.

This is a good opportunity to practice coloring shiny objects!

A Cute Skull

Skulls are the kind of thing you’ll always end up drawing in art classes. It’s a good way to understand better how the head works and which shapes to use.

However, you don’t need to go and draw a realistic skull right now. That might be way too much at this point.

So let’s keep it simple. A very cartoony skull should do it!

drawing of a skull, one of many easy drawing ideas!

You can draw a skull by drawing two very simple shapes: a circle and a square, joined together.

Now just add two holes for where the eyes used to go, some teeth, and a hole for the nose. You’re done!

One of my first drawing ideas was to draw the moon. So now it’s the sun’s turn!

Simply draw a circle with some random lines around it and you’re done. Go ahead and add some color.

simple and easy drawing idea for drawing a sun!

Want to add some more uniqueness to your sun? How about drawing wavy lines around it? Or better yet, small triangles!

Go ahead and draw a smiling face to your sun or even some sunglasses; that could look quite amusing!

This is also one of the pretty simple ideas that I recommend for younger kids or even toddlers, in my 60 Drawing Ideas for Kids That Spark Their Imagination article, which you can read here!

Kids love to start by drawing the sun, and this kind of drawing tutorial!

You can even draw a sunset or sunrise.

Bees have a very fun shape and color scheme, so I think it’s an amazing idea to draw and quite cool.

Simple and adorable drawing of a bee

They’re also very round, so you have the opportunity to, again, practice your circles and ellipses!

A round head, a round body, and tiny round wings. Now, just add small lines for their legs, and you’re done. Don’t forget to add some color!

Penguins, with their silly little walks, can be very cute, so I had to add them to the list.

You can also draw them by using very easy and simple shapes.

cute and easy drawing idea of a penguin

Draw a shape that resembles an egg, that’s the body. Now all you have to do is add tiny little arms to the side and a small orange beak.

You can even draw it inside of a snow globe!

There you have it, you just drew a penguin in a fun and easy way!

I love drawing mushrooms! I have just so many pictures of different mushrooms saved on my computer.

cute drawing of mushrooms

Whenever I want to draw something different and simple, I look for one that looks interesting and draw it.

There are so many different types of mushrooms, made out of different shapes and colors!

Some are very simple to draw, others can be more complex. So choose something according to your mood and have some fun!

Related Questions

One of the easiest drawing ideas for kids and beginners is to draw simple geometric shapes like circles, squares, triangles or even a rainbow.

Another fun idea is to draw a rocket ship (with just those shapes!), which can be done by drawing a simple triangular shape with a few extra details like a window and flame.

These are easy things to draw while building confidence in your sketching skills.

An easy drawing idea for very young kids would be doodling small creatures or favorite characters in a chibi style.

Such as baby Groot, cute animals (like a Whale or Dolphin) or even drawing a simple paper plane.

These drawings are simple and allow children to explore their creativity.

What other drawing skills can young kids or beginner artists practice?

One of the best things to draw for beginners to improve their skills is to practice drawing continuous line drawings , where the pencil never leaves the paper.

Additionally, sketching simple objects or scenes will help build foundational drawing skills.

Are there any easy drawing ideas that incorporate letters or numbers?

Absolutely!

Beginner artists can create illustrations by turning letters or numbers into objects, like using a “B” for a butterfly or the number “8” for a snowman.

  • Don’t be afraid to erase: Erasers are your friend; use them to correct mistakes and refine your work.
  • Practice proportion: Learn how to measure and compare different parts of the object to ensure accurate representation.
  • Study anatomy: If drawing living creatures or people, understand their anatomy for more realistic depictions.
  • Use colored pencils: Experiment with colored pencils to add vibrancy and interest to your drawings.
  • Mix media: Combine different materials like ink, watercolor, or charcoal for varied textures and effects.
  • Seek feedback: Share your work with others, whether online or in person, to receive constructive criticism and guidance.
  • Keep experimenting: Don’t be afraid to try new subjects, styles, and techniques. The more you experiment, the more you’ll grow as an artist.

Remember, drawing is a skill that improves with practice, so keep at it and enjoy the journey of creating art.

28 Drawing Ideas for Creative Art Students

Need some drawing ideas?  Get ready for the most creative list of drawing prompts imaginable!

We’ve all been there.  You’d like to make some art but you’re having trouble finding the right subject matter.  Maybe you’re an art student and you need to draw something for art class tomorrow.  -Yikes!  Looks like you had better come up with something original to draw fast…

This gigantic catalog of ingenious drawing ideas is sure to jog your memory and spur your own creativity.  This list of clever things to draw is an ongoing project that I will add to periodically.  So be sure to bookmark this page and visit from time to time!

While this is a list (sort of) each item on the list contains a full paragraph of ideas from which you can generate your own drawing ideas!

What’s in The Refrigerator?

Your refrigerator contains a boat-load of goodies not only for eating, but for drawing as well! The most obvious food items are the fruits and vegetables that one might find in a traditional still life.  Beyond a “traditional” still life you can work with other food and drink items that you find in your refrigerator. How about lining up juice containers?   An arrangement of condiments would surely make an interesting composition. Anybody for dessert?

Check the Pantry

Besides having a ton of great items to include in your artwork, the pantry typically contains long lasting items – items that are nonperishable and withstand long poses if your still life drawing is to take days or weeks to complete. Because many of your pantry items come in packages and cans, you’ll find many boxes and cylindrical forms to draw.  This is a good thing. You want to get familiar with basic forms when you are first learning to draw.

If you have a garage I bet there are some tools in there. Wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers…ahh what superb items for composing a new drawing. If you have any wood workers or mechanics in your family you have hit the still life jackpot. I’ve practically made a career out of painting tools alone. I prefer my tools old, beat, and rusty but you don’t have to be as picky as me!

Linen Closet

Did you know you can create an endless number of drawings out of a single towel? Depending on how you position the fabric and lighting you’ve got yourself a ton of options. What would a towel look like draped over a chair? How about pinned to a wall or hanging from a hook? …and that’s just a single towel we’re talking about. Surely there are other items that you can draw as well. How about a bed sheet? Some bed sheets have great patterns that can really add unity and rhythm to your artwork’s composition.

Art Supplies

Sometimes the idea you’re looking for is right under your nose! Why not use your drawing and painting supplies as subject matter for your next drawing? Brushes in a coffee can. Pencils scattered about your sketchbook. My, my, my, the possibilities are endless. Just be careful not to include tools you’re going to actually need to complete your artwork!

Athletic Equipment

Baseballs, soccer balls, softball mitts, ice skates, bats, bat bags, golf clubs, swimming goggle, jerseys, pads, helmets, cleats, etc. All of these items and more can make awesome subject matter for your next drawing. Especially if these items are meaningful to you. You might consider creating a sport-themed still life. For instance you could arrange a few baseballs and a mitt on a table top and use your baseball jersey for the backdrop or fabric for underneath the items. Just make sure you don’t need the sports items for a game anytime soon!

Books are great for absorbing information but they are equally great for making geometric still life arrangements. Pick books that are thick and brick-like and you’ll be able to stack them and build interesting arrangements. Then it’s just a matter of drawing your newly created still life! Because books are basically all box-like forms you’ll want to brush up on your perspective drawing skills .

Circuit Boards

Before I throw away any electronic devices I have the habit of taking them apart and saving some of the interesting guts of the devices. I have amassed a whole collection of really interesting circuit boards that I loan out to my own drawing students. There are so many amazing little parts to circuit boards. Once you start looking closely you’ll feel like you’re drawing a microscopic city of the future! Just don’t get hung up on every single detail or you’ll drive yourself crazy. Get your hands on some old electronic parts and start drawing today!

Stools & Chairs

Sometimes a good drawing idea is right beneath you! When put in strong lighting stools and chairs cast some really interesting looking shadows. Try arranging a stool or two in a dark room under a single bright light. Let the cast shadows become an equally important part of your drawing’s composition and you just might impressed at how simple subject matter can make beautiful artwork when composed well!  Check out this inspiring interview with Vincent Desiderio , he does some work with chairs and staircases.

When looking for still life ideas don’t always look to objects that would fill your paper with their actual size. Sometimes taking a really close look at tiny objects presents a unique composition to your views. Can you imagine a drawing that is close up view of a tiny piece of jewelry? How about the inside of an old watch? Just because something is small in real life doesn’t mean you can’t create a beautiful, giant work of art from it!

Some of those drawers you have in your kitchen have dozens of great items just begging to be drawn. From spoons and ladles to egg beaters and spatulas, you could spend years composing original drawings of different arrangements of all the interesting utensils and hand held appliances you find in your kitchen.

Portraits / Figure Drawing

From self portraits to full figure drawings, there is an endless assortment to how you can draw people.

Mirror Position (look up | look down)

So you want to draw yourself? You don’t have to look straight into a mirror. Try repositioning your mirror from a higher altitude and angle it down so that you need to look up into the mirror. This will create an interesting vantage point for the viewers of your artwork. It will still be a self-portrait but will incorporate the floor of your work space and possibly the top of your head and maybe even your drawing setup as well! Just be careful to secure the mirror so that it’s glass doesn’t fall on your and break. Broken mirrors can cut you.

You can also position a mirror beneath you and draw yourself by looking down into the mirror. This will result in a drawing that makes it look as if the view is looking up at you. When doing this all your facial features become condensed and your nostril’s take on much more significance in the drawing. Try it and see!

You could spend a lifetime studying and drawing just a single pair of hands. Hands carry as much emotion and history as the expression on one’s face. Imagine a drawing of an 80 year old mechanic’s hands as compared to a 16 years old student. Oh the possibilities! You can even set up a mirror to view your own hands from someone else’s perspective.  What’s an original hand drawing you can compose right now?

Our feet carry our bodies from place to place. They are very important and often overlooked by artists. Why not give them the credit they deserve by honoring them threw an amazing pencil or charcoal drawing! Like hands, there’s a huge range of them that can all give a different look and feel to your artwork. How can you compose your next drawing using a single foot? How about 5 or six feet together in a single drawing?

Monochromatic Portrait

How are you feeling today? Have you ever drawn a portrait in a single color? Why not try to convey the emotional state of the person you are drawing not only through their facial expressions and body position, but through your palette as well? Does the color blue suit the mood of the person you are trying to draw? How about red? Grab some colored pencils and get to it!

Sleeping Beauties

It can be difficult to get people to model for us when we want to draw them. People are usually self conscience and refuse to be our drawing models. Other people just can’t sit still or have to be annoyingly checking their cell phone constantly. This makes your job as the artist incredibly difficult to complete your rendering. Sometimes people fall asleep in more accessible places such as a couch and if you are quiet and have your sketching supplies ready you may be able to pounce on the opportunity. The best part is the person sleeping will never even know you are drawing them! WARNING: you might want to avoid sneaking into people’s bedrooms and drawing them because that may just freak them out.

Body Close Ups

Who ever said that drawing people means a formal head and shoulders sort of drawing? There’s an awful lot of interesting features on the human body. Why not zoom in and focus on just these features. Can you imagine sketching a close up of your eye? How about a drawing of just teeth? (My wife, who is a dental hygienist would be so proud!) Could you draw a bunch of ear studies all on a single piece of paper?

How can you convey a person’s emotions or mood through your artwork? Consider a person’s facial expressions when drawing them. Also, how do background elements or positioning affect the mood of the person and artwork? Would certain colors convey the mood best? Don’t always draw people as objects. Try to get inside their heads and convey your interpretations on paper. A portrait is not only about the physical aspects of human anatomy. How else can you represent a person on paper without necessarily drawing the person at all? …Now that’s something to think about 🙂

Hair Styles

Besides the obvious range of colors that get from different people’s hair, there is an endless variety of hair styles that you can use to create interesting looking drawings. From braids, and short wavy hair to pig tails and mohawks.   Hair takes on a form all of its own. Speaking of form, resist the temptation to use a bunch of lines to draw hair. Hair is so much more than that. Draw hair as if you are sculpting clay. It has form and volume and should be drawn as such. How cool would it be to look at a serious of drawings of just various hair styles?

The next time you need some drawing ideas the answer may very well be staring you in the face! With your face alone you could compose endless drawings simply by controlling the lighting. A self-portait with light coming from below looks dramatically different than a self-portrait drawn from a normal light source positioned above your face. Turn out the lights in you room and work from a single light source such as a lamp with the lampshade removed. Try drawing your own face with some unique and interesting points of illumination.

Landscape Ideas

Although this section is titled “landscape” that doesn’t mean that you have to draw only trees and fields of grass! Keep an open mind when looking for drawing inspiration. There’s a ton of great subject matter to create from including natural and man-made items outdoors and interiors as well.

When most artists draw a landscape they look out into the open and create a vista. They accomplish this by looking straight ahead and drawing the vast land before them. What would your composition look like if you looked up instead?  It’s like a whole new artistic interpretation isn’t it?  You can represent some interesting vantage points on paper by looking up at a tree or building instead. The next time you are drawing outdoors try sketching some tall objects by looking up at them. You might be surprised at how interesting your drawing becomes.

Thiebaud's Intersection

Like looking up looking down can also reveal a landscape from a different point of view. I’ve always enjoyed street scenes draw from a higher altitude so that the viewer is looking down upon the subject matter. This kind of perspective inherently carries a narrative with it. Why was the artist looking down at the scenery? What floor are they on and why are they looking out the window? You see. It doesn’t take much to arrive at a unique looking landscape drawing.

When we go to the beach to draw most people immediately think of the water. Before you draw the water take a look at the fantastic structure that the sand dunes create. The light illuminating the dunes so that one side is lighter than the other can give you fabulous information for creating really nice drawings.

Parking Lots

What can see like an otherwise boring setting can sometimes erupt into a wonder work of art containing rhythm and variety all in one easy to find setting. Parking lots are typically made up of a grid-like structure so you’ll want to brush up on your perspective skills . Once your parking lot structure is drawn out you can focus on the fantastic variety that each vehicle’s color and form has to offer. Everything lines up and creates this perfect rhythm as a viewer’s eye moves from vehicle to vehicle. There’s often an overlooked sense of harmony that can be seen in even the simplest parking lots.

Street Scenes

Just because you are drawing outside doesn’t mean you need to draw trees at all. Street scenes can make an amazing composition. Whether urban or suburban try giving streets and their surroundings your artistic attention. Crossroads, signs, buildings all make for interesting drawings.

DaVinci water study

You don’t need a humungous river or ocean in order to capture an interesting drawing of water. Unless you are bound by a 100% urban setting you can more than likely find some small streams to inspire your next sketch. Depending on your line of sight and the time of day you’ll get all kinds of interesting reflections that contrast with the swirling movement of the stream’s natural motion.

Monet's Water Lilies

If Monet: Overview from the Metropolitan Museum of Art spent his later career painting ponds surely you could explore a pond or two yourself. Because ponds are small bodies of water with no tide or much motion they tend to support plant and animal life on their surface. Grab your sketch book and go find yourself some Lilli pads in a nearby pond.

Industrial Buildings

Without risking injury to yourself you may be able to draw some old, broken down industrial buildings. I’m yet to see a town that doesn’t have some old mills or a vacant industrial complex nearby. Caution though; venturing inside may acquaint you will some homeless individuals whom really seem to enjoy their “off the grid” lifestyle. Typically drawing from the outside will bring more peace of mind. Either way, some of the worn architecture and darkness portrayed by old industrial building can make for some really interesting drawings.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi • "The Pier With a Lamp"

Shopping Centers

Places of commerce are always a good subject for your next landscape drawing. Whether drawing an interior scene like a shopping mall or and outdoor scene such as a quaint outdoor market, centers of commerce have a ton of variety. You find everything from boxes to signs and window reflections to keep you busy for hours. How about a local farmers market?

Have some drawing suggestions of you’re own?  …use the comment form below to add some!

Hi! I’m trying to learn to do portraits, but the thing is is that I can draw all the facial features good, but when it comes to the shape of the face, I can never get it right.

Break the face down into simple geometric shapes to start. Try not to draw any curves and focus on the size relationships between things and the angles they make.

This is one of the most epic posts in here John, thank you so much for sharing these ! This website is a creativity pool for enthusiasts, really love it !

I’m looking for ways to master drawing the face. Eyes, Lips, Mouth, Nose

60 Easy Things To Draw For Beginners When Bored

  • artistichaven
  • Artistic , Drawings

Thinking of some cool, fun, and quirky ways to eradicate boredom? Let’s talk of options like gardening, baking, or learning any new art form. Too far-fetched? Then it’s better to start with something closer, or realistic to continue. How about drawing? Throwback to the times when scribbling something on the back of the book was a regular feat to escape the classroom’s boredom. So, why not retrieve back the habit? Besides, even if you are a novice, we have a list of things to draw for beginners.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Excited about the new venture? Well, it’s the same for us also. For that, you need to put on your thinking cap, grab your share of essentials like paints, brushes, palettes, and base, and get on the plunge. Need ideas? Get glued to the list below. Imperfection is the basic step from where you start learning. So, without worrying an inch start with the easy ones, and don’t forget to frame your paintings.

Cool Things To Draw For Beginners When Bored

The city skyline.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Do we need to explain this? As kids, this was the primary thing that we loved to draw without much hassle. As we all know, that the city starts relieving its moments at night, this becomes an easy drawing to reflect the proper kinetic energy of an urban dwelling in the evening. Besides, this drawing is the simplest variant where you can make the city skyline visible with proper visual identification. You can have the liberty of deciding the drawing steps, so the city skyline would have your desired level of detail.

Mandala Art

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Compared to the previous art feature, the creation of Mandala art might be a tad bit difficult for beginners. However, this one recently made a huge comeback, where people have been inclined towards this Mandala art for a list of reasons. A mandala is quite a complex abstract design that’s usually found in circular form. Besides ‘mandala’ is a Sanskrit word that means ‘circle’. So, as the name suggests, this form of art is a circular one that takes up quite a considerable part of the base. Also, when filled with all the colors, looks intricately beautiful.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

This is one of the primary names while discussing things to draw for beginners. Again, a good way of reviving back the childhood, the dandelions are the kind of flowers that needs a step-by-step procedure to draw. Start with a small central circle, from where extends two lines which work as the stems. Then draw a bigger circle keeping the center circle as the base. Draw the lines based on that, that would act as the roots, and the designs. When done with all, erase the bigger circle. Finally, bold the entire drawing with a permanent black marker.

Smokey/Sexy Eyes

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Though they might look easy, the eyes are the most difficult ones to draw. Start with the edges, and make them straight, and sharp. Next, don’t round the corners. To make your character look stern, yet sober make the lines look straight yet loose. Have a quick shading, and outline well with a black marker, and then you are done. You can also compare yours with the archetypes. It’s all about creating a bold look that would enhance the entire creation. So, whom did you consider while creating this?

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Yes, this was indeed funny. Drawing a robot is almost like learning the shapes in a pre-primary class. However, it’s the easiest as it seems. Start with an oval attached to a tiny rectangle that would form the face and the neck. The feet are circular and cut in halves. Again, on the head place a small antenna for the robot that would include a thin rectangle and a small circle. For the rest of the body parts, like hands, arms, eyes, or nose, place either small circles, curved lines, or small oval shapes.

Winnie The Pooh

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Didn’t we all find him cute while we were young? I mean, I still found him cute. While thinking hard on placing names in the list of things to draw for the beginners, how could we not mention him? Start by placing two circles that would occupy almost the entire sheet. That would form his head and body. Then draw two ovals for his paws. Check the contours again, and make sure you have removed all the extra lines. Also, you didn’t forget his pitcher full of honey, right? So, draw him well.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

A dragon is easy to draw. Start with a corner on the paper and draw a ‘V’. Then add the crocodile looking jaws, and draw the entire body with the perfect curves. Yes, then you have the legs, and the claws to add. Look at the finer details while drawing the teeth, eyes, belly, and other intricate details. Then in the last, you have to draw the spikes on the back, and of course the fire and clouds for the background scenery. In the end, trace and color the entire drawing with crayons.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Again, the instance where we can laugh a bit. But, drawing a cute cow is always cute. Start with an oval shape, and place another oval shape on the sides. That was the body and the shape. Now, take two curves and draw the tail. Place circles as and when necessary for the eyes, polka-dots in the body. Of course, small lines folded as curves take the shape of the legs. When done with the entire thing, place the colors as and when necessary. Here you have your cute cow on the sheet.

Cartoon Penguin

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

This one involves more shapes when compared to the rest of the things to draw for beginners . Start with two tiny ovals as the eyes, and place underneath two curved lines joined at a point, shaped like the lips. Now, place a half-circle above to mark the head. To the right of the face, draw a curved, vertical line for the penguin’s cheek. Now, connect the cheek to the mark placed at the top to form the front part of the head, and also add the other side by making a similar mark. The head should be dome-shaped. After this, draw a half-circle below for the body. Paint it well, and flaunt it.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

The Sunflowers look immensely beautiful when donned well. So, that states that you need to draw a big center circle, and based on that make a rough circle that’s bigger, to draw the petals in shape. Start with the petals, that’s almost curved in the best way. The petals come in shape one after another, and yes you are good in that way. Then comes the stem, which goes straight down from under the petals. Make it thick, let the shoots, and leaves branch out from it. Color it well, and make it artistic.

Bart Simpson

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

We all know this famous young boy with yellow-spiked hair, bright eyes. So, getting him reflected on the paper won’t take much hassle, what say? Start with the spikes and the elongated face. Then let the lines meet at an end to finish the face. Fill in all the necessary shapes for the arms, legs, and shorts. Also, to enhance the drawing, you can add a skateboard. Are you all done with the drawing? Now, color it well, and frame it on the wall.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

This one’s comparatively new in the list of the things to draw for beginners. This is like an optical illusion 3D drawing. Start by drawing a circle on the center of the page, and draw horizontal lines of equal shape all around. Now, draw curved lines across this circle to connect through the horizontal lines. It seems as if we are looking up at the sphere, so the space between each curve should be small at the top, which would gradually get larger towards the end. Ink it well with a black marker, and make the circle a bit darker.

Pseudo-Sugar Skull

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Creepy, and a bit scary, the pseudo-sugar skull might be easy to create for some. Start by tracing the outline of the skull. Then start making small lines all over. Of course, you need to shade this well. Then create two small perfect circles that would make the eye-sockets. Then you need to draw the kidney-bean shaped nose. Finally, draw a curve that would make the teeth. All of it should be placed perfectly, and in proper shape to suit the face. Isn’t this the best way to scare someone?

Butterflies

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

These are the colorful creatures that are everyone’s favorite. First, draw a straight line, and then make sure that there’s enough space to spread the wings. Of course, you can’t forget the thorax and the three pairs of legs. All the wings should be oval-shaped, overlapping each other. To make it easier, divide the abdomen into segments, and then make the entire thing colorful. Here’s your bright creation, all ready for display.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

If you are seeking something that’s got only lines from the list of the things to draw for beginners, here is the one you need. Take a basic measurement of the paper, and place the flower-buds, and the stalks. Make a mark on the place where the two smaller petals of the flower-buds are joined, and also mark the stalks the same way. Draw the petals, the leaves, and create the contours well. Remove the extra line, and here your tulips are ready.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Feathers are light to carry and easy to draw. For this, draw a tilted line, and make it bold. Draw the curves from both sides of the line, and make them spacious enough to shade well. Then, with all your ability start shading. Make the tips pointed, and your feather a remarkable specimen. Did we miss out on anything else?

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Panda looks cute, and are round-shaped, which makes them easier to draw. Start with an oval shape that would form the face. On that, draw two more circles for the eyes. Of course, there are the ears that are curved and placed outside the face. Don’t miss out on the cute nose to complete the face.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Time to feel majestic people. The list of things to draw for the beginners would now host the queen. Here, start with a half-circle, filled with cloudy hair. Now, two curves go down and join at the point to form the neck. Again, from two curves to join for the arms. That would also form the dress. Lastly, draw the legs, put a crown at the top, and get your queen ready.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Cute is the word that we all thought while describing this being. It’s almost similar to drawing a panda. Just make sure you add a bell to the neck while the head and eyes are done with. Other than that, the cute round head, the innocent, and cute eyes, and the lines curved as paws, are almost the same. However, the best part remains in coloring the cutie. Color it well, and enhance the charming status.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Honestly, more than the drawings, the coloring part would be more interesting. The combo of blue, and yellow with an eye placed in the center have fascinated almost everyone. What matters is how do you do the game of shapes including lines and circles to get it done well. Of course, don’t forget to remove the extra lines.

Easy Things To Draw For Beginners

Now, we are done with the list of things to draw for beginners. Did all of the above seem easy? Moreover, which one you think would you start first? Whatever you start next, don’t forget to share the picture. Also, you are welcome. Paintings are good as a hobby and awesome as a stress-buster. It seems like the colors that we fill in, or the wide sceneries that we draw are a major part of our imaginations being unfolded on the paper. Did you feel the same while drawing too? Then, you are spot-on. Draw with ease, and grace, and flaunt with happiness.

You might start out with this and decide to fill it in and add more detail, or you may decide the outline looks great on its own.
