ICSE English Composition: 5 Tips to Write Effective Essays

by Yash Soni on Sep 26, 2022

ICSE English composition or essay writing is among the most challenging aspects of the exam. English compositions broadly are of 5 types . Here are few things you need to keep in mind when writing a composition in your English 9 or 10 language exam.

Start with a Strong Introduction

A good introduction will set the tone of your essay and pique the interest of your examiner. It is good to cultivate curiosity in readers.

Write About Something You Know Well

If you're writing about something you know well, you can use examples from your own life to illustrate your points. However, if you're writing about something new, you might find yourself struggling with ideas. Try brainstorming different ways to approach the subject. You can develop your ideas by reading good books from publishers such as Almond Books .

Develop a Point of View

After deciding what you want to say, you need to decide where you stand on the issue. This is called developing a point of view. If you are writing an essay on an argumentative topic, you should begin by identifying the opposing side's position. Then, you should identify your own position. Finally, you should explain why you believe your position is correct.

Craft a Clear Structure

A good composition structure includes three parts: introduction, body, and conclusion (not paragraphs; you can divide your essay body into a few small paragraphs). Each part has its own purpose. The introduction provides context for the rest of the composition. It introduces the main idea and gives background information. The body explains the argument and supports the central idea. And the conclusion summarizes the key points of the composition.

Include Details That Support Your Claims

You should also use examples to illustrate your points. These examples should be relevant to your composition topic. They should not just be random facts; rather, they should relate to your point of view.

You will be able to write effective essays in ICSE if you follow these simple but vital tips. Prepare well for your Language exam by practicing the latest ICSE essay topics (taken from Almond Books ICSE Compositions Textbook ).

Teachers of Vedantu have studied the previous papers and with thorough knowledge of the Subjects, have framed the questions for both Semesters 1 and 2. Semester 1 has some objective type questions in which students need more in-depth knowledge as sometimes in the final exams they may ask multiple-choice questions. Here at Vedantu, we make sure the topics that are covered give importance to the required topics. Students can ace the exam if they understand the pattern of the exam by analysing and solving the papers. From previous papers, one can identify the pattern and the topics and solve them to form a better understanding.

Advantages of solving Sample Papers

Without much knowledge of how the pattern will be or how the questions will be framed, it can be stressful for students. By practising sample papers, students get an idea of how the questions are framed in the subjects and which topics are more relevant. It will be a relief for students to know these things before exams. Students should practice the sample papers and cross-check their solutions with notes, analyse their capabilities.

By solving the sample papers, students can increase their speed and accuracy. After a long gap of pandemic students might have lost the writing in a given time constraint. So, solving sample papers can get them back to constant writing and practice.

It also increases confidence in students that they can ace the exam without any fear. With time it leads to increase in revision, since the whole syllabus gets revised while solving the sample papers.

For Maths, solving more sample papers will help students to score well in the exams, since Maths as a subject is  practical rather than theoretical.

For Science, students can answer objective type questions and also improvise descriptive type answers with thorough practice.

For English, letter writing, grammar and vocabulary can be improved by solving multiple sample papers as students can identify the mistakes and correct them.

It is an easy way to check, verify and rectify the mistakes with sample papers before  the final exams.

Here, at Vedantu, students will build confidence and enhance their skills with practice and suggestions from experts.

What should be kept in mind is that the tone of the letter should be formal and the letter should be to the point.

Layout of Formal Letter

formal letter for class 10 ICSE

Any one format may be followed.

It is important that the overall structure is as clear and concise as possible and that you avoid the use of informal language.

Your/Sender’s Address The address is written on the top left or right of the page along with your city and pin code.

Date The date should be written under the sender’s address. Leave a gap and then write the date in the format – date/month/year, e.g., 10th August, 20 ……..

The date should always be written in full form and no short cuts are to be followed, e.g., 10/8 or August 10.

Receiver’s/Recipient’s Address This address is of the person the letter is being addressed to, the receiver. The address is written on the left side of the page after the date. It can be addressed to a particular person or organization.

Subject It is written below the receiver’s address and its purpose is to state the main objective to the receiver in a short sentence.

Salutation Since it is usually a business letter that falls under formal letters, you would not know the receiver personally. Hence, the titles for salutation are put in the following manner followed by their surname along with a ‘Dear’: Mr. – Male receiver who is married/unmarried. Mrs. – Female receiver who is married. Ms. – Female receiver who is unmarried. Dr. – Male/Female receiver who is a doctor by profession. You can also write ‘Dear Sir/Madam’.

Opening Sentence It should be strong but not rude or straightforward, as that would only create a negative impact to the receiver. It must clearly state your purpose, whether it is to lodge a complaint, make an enquiry or to request something.

Body It is where you write the content/subject of the letter. It should not be more than two paragraphs depending on the type of business letter you intend to write. You must avoid using casual terms and abbreviations, so as to keep the style of the letter intact. It should be clear and precise, ensuring that all the major points are covered and is also not lengthy at the same time.

Closing It should be a conclusion of your main body and in not more than two to three lines that must convey the action/response you expect the receiver to take/provide.

Subscription/Complimentary close It is written on the left or right side of the letter below the closing, leaving some gap. It usually ends with ‘Yours faithfully/sincerely/respectfully’. Only the first letter will be in capital.

Signature/Name of Sender This comes only after the subscription and includes both the signature and name of the sender, unlike informal/personal letter. You should put your signatures first and then write your full name with your designation, if any, within brackets under the signatures. Example:

Yours faithfully, (Full name) (Designation, if required)
