Interior Design Personal Statement

Sample Interior Design Personal Statement

From an early age, I was constantly transforming my bedroom into a range of different looks. I enjoyed working around the challenges posed by rooms which were not simple rectangles, and using soft furnishings to add layers of texture. Having grown up in China, I look forward to learning more about Western cultural influences, and the synthesis this can form with my own inspirations. In Britain, people typically think of ‘Made in China’, but it is my ambition to transform this perception to ‘Designed in China’.

I recently majored in Decoration Art Design at Shandong Vocational College of Industry (Equivalent to UK A-level). This mostly consisted of team projects working through the entire design process, from conceptual ideas to technical drawings, to researching consumer needs, appropriate materials and finance, and then producing our end-products. For one project I designed a successful office layout, for which I scored top in my class. In 2008, alongside my college studies I completed a part-time course in Visual Communication at China Central Academy of Fine Arts. I particularly enjoyed learning about The impact of design on people’s behaviour. I look forward to learning more about this fascinating area at degree level

Beyond the scope of my academic studies, I love reading innovative interior design magazines such as ‘Wallpaper’. I have already had some exposure to British designs through TV shows such as Grand Designs. Watching professionals at work inspires my designs. My ultimate goal is to design a full smart house, with a fully automatic floor that responds and enables you to move positions at the push of a button.

I have supplemented my academic interests with practical experience working at an interior design company last summer. I worked independently to design a new open plan house for a small client. I learnt that in additional to creative flair and technical ability, a good designer must possess excellent communication skills in order to listen to the customer and understand their vision. My designs at this company successfully secured the customer’s approval and were put into creation. I enjoyed visiting the finished room and seeing my ideas transformed into reality.

My language skills (I speak native Chinese, advanced English and basic Japanese) enable me to interact with people from very different cultures, which will help my designs be varied and diverse. I enjoy meeting new people and look forward to moving to the UK to study .

In my spare time I enjoy expressing my creative side through painting, singing and dancing. I also swim throughout the year to build my fitness and will power. I set myself distance goals and then mentally and physically commit myself to meeting them. I apply this same approach to my studies, planning my time carefully and fully dedicating myself to ensure every task is completed to the best of my ability. This attitude will enable me to rise to the challenges faced by university study. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, I look forward to hearing from you.

We hope this sample of an Interior Design Personal Statement has been help for you.

Example 1 – Architecture and Interior Design Personal Statement

I think my traits of determination, attention to detail, innovation, and passion for design will help me succeed in achieving excellent grades and professional success in architecture and interior design. After earning my bachelor’s degree in Design, I began to consider the potential meaning a room or structure could convey about a person. A lot about a person’s life and temperament may be inferred from their room. That was how my parents would describe it. They were shocked by the chaos in my room every time they came in. And when they remarked, “Rooms can tell a lot about you,” I was unable to understand what they meant. But learning about architecture made it clear to me how significant each building is and how unique each one is. I am confident that I can offer to the education system your university offers due to my extensive knowledge of architecture, strong project-management skills, and profound imagination. My completion of my bachelor’s degree has proven my excellent degree of professional abilities and my rigorous design methods, among other things. I want to pursue a master’s in Architecture and Interior Design programme in order to broaden my experience and understanding in designing ideas.

My abilities to comprehend, analyze, and create exact concepts with creative thinking are my strongest suit. My engineering degree confirms my inclination for reliability, efficiency, and persistence in design, and I can carry these skills together with it. I decided to continue my education because of my enthusiasm and curiosity for the design world. I believe combining interior design and architecture studies will give me a better understanding of how to improve a space’s visual impact. This would be extremely beneficial for my career. The fusion of two powerful disciplines might deliver fantastic outcomes for its clients.

I have enrolled in pertinent courses in this field in order to enhance my knowledge and develop my portfolio. Through these courses, I was able to get a solid foundation in design principles, interior aspects, and diverse approaches. My internships and projects throughout my undergraduate programme have improved my communication, cooperation, organisation, and research skills. Since this field demands both hard and soft skills, I paid attention to improving both.

After attending the xyz advanced Course, I now have effective and professional-grade tools needed to produce interior and architectural representations. I can develop incredible pictures for practical uses by using these professional tools. I have learnt how to work in a manufacturing environment, effectively employ a range of methods and resources to create models, and use Photo editing softwares to recognise architectural principles.

My determination to flourish in the competitive design industry is represented throughout the courses that I’ve taken. I am confident of my capacity to carry a requirement, evaluate the demands, present a pictorial representation, show the final piece, and analyse the results and process. Considering today’s demanding world, my familiarity with business technologies gives me a huge edge over competitors.

I made a conscious decision to excel in this challenging and quickly changing domain of design by blending my clear architectural and practical designing abilities with my passion for imaginative design. I was driven to push my limits and accomplish more by my creativity and innate curiosity. By doing this course, I wish to pave the way for a future in which I can work as an interior designer and architect for any major firm in India. I intend to establish my own interior design business once I’ve accumulated the expertise and resources necessary. I believe my credentials and skills make me a strong applicant who is eager to achieve success in this program and in the future.

Example 2 – Interior Design Personal Statement

I have always been someone who continuously changed the appearance of my bedroom. I would add different items I have made and rearrange the furniture in my room to vary the appearance. I never seemed to be happy with how my room looked, according to my parents. I was constantly altering it. Actually, I liked solving the little hurdles my room presented. I look forward to discovering more about the impacts of western art and culture as I grow older since it will help me develop my own vision. I became acquainted with the design world due to my degree in Decorating Art and Design. I was able to better grasp designing through working in a variety of teams, developing concepts, and seeing them through to completion.

I really enjoy understanding how design affects how people behave. This interior design master’s programme can be helpful in learning more about the subject on a more comprehensive level. Understanding international design and current events is essential since the curriculum offers a wider viewpoint. So, in order to broaden the area of my academic studies, I began reading creative interior periodicals. I expanded my knowledge of the world through reading magazines and journals, watching interior design programmes, and attending seminars. These had a big influence on my designs. I want to build a career through this course that will enable me to accomplish more in life.

After earning my degree, I spent two months working for an interior design firm. As an intern, I helped the team leaders with planning and designing. Besides that, I realised that an interior designer needs to be a master communicator in order to comprehend their clients’ needs and meet them. This is in addition to having strong technical skills. Also, I had the chance to work individually with a client in this company. The customer enthusiastically endorsed my designs and ordered them for production. I’ve never felt as content and delighted as I did when my designs started to come to life. Since that moment, I’ve made every effort to devote my attention in the field as it brings me the most joy.

My ability to communicate with people from very different places and communities is made possible by my proficiency in Hindi, English, Tamil, and Malayalam. As a result of my encounters with these clients, my works have become more inventive and fruitful. One of the key aspects of this field that I find most appealing is the chance for personal growth. There is always room for improvement, and by enrolling in this programme, I expect to discover additional chances to socialise with others and discover other cultures.

Painting and dancing are two ways I like to use my leisure time to showcase my talent. I establish long goals with myself and make a conscious effort to achieve them both emotionally and physically. I take the same attitude for my academics, properly organizing my time and giving every task my complete focus so that it is done to the highest of my ability. With this mind-set, I will be able to meet the challenges of university education.

Spaces, in my opinion, can significantly impact our lives. Through this course, I hope to change and enhance people’s lives. I want to work as an interior designer in the future, and I want to create spaces that draw people in and inspire them. In addition to utilizing my abilities, I want to impress the company I will be working for. I feel my passion and insight of this subject make me a qualified candidate for the Interior Design degree offered by your respected university.

How to Write the Best Personal Statement for Interior Design

February 7, 2019

A personal statement is an opportunity to tell the admission committee about everything that is not required to be provided within the framework of other mandatory documents, or at least to expand this information with fascinating details and reflections. We’ve asked professional personal statement writers from WriteMyPaperHub.com service to share their insights on writing a personal statement on interior design and other related majors. Some of these tips to start a personal statement may seem obvious, but you should make sure to follow them.

  • Writing a personal statement focus on a specific university. In any case, do not submit a general essay that would “come off” in any university. The personal statement should show the admissions office why you want to study in this university, and not somewhere else, and prove to that there is no one more suitable for them than you. Writing about interior design, focus on your insights related to this topic.
  • Do not make the entry boring and long. The admissions office checks hundreds of similar statements a day, so if your introduction is again mocked by the question asked by the examiners, then you risk immediately losing their attention. The beginning of the essay should be bright and fascinating, describe your most vivid idea on a given topic or tell a story that explains your way of thinking and character. You are writing about yourself but related to the interior design. However, you should not spend all the given space talking about your childhood insights on the issue.
  • Do not try to tell too much. The introductory personal statement is not a book or even a term paper, so it’s better to focus on one topic and back it up with good versatile arguments. Of course, the primary topic is YOU, but often colleges and universities want you to answer extra questions related to the interior design in your personal statement.
  • Your statement should not be impersonal. This work should have your unique style, handwriting, and ideas; it should stand out among hundreds of similar essays and report many interesting things about you. Don’t be afraid to be original, but at the same time make sure to follow all the instructions. You are not supposed to write a poem or sing about yourself — just write a personal statement with original content and make sure to link it to the interior design creatively.
  • Do not forget to proofread your statement before sending it to the admissions office. Several times go through the grammar, punctuation, spelling and stylistic component, and even better, let your friend or professor read your statement. Remember, you can use online proofreading services or pay an editor from a writing service to read your paper and edit it professionally. It will still be your work and your work only, but it will be freed from all those mistakes and technical omissions.
  • Do not try to be a prankster. Straining humor is unlikely to make the selection committee much fun, but even if you are 100% sure of your comedy gift, just in case, check your joke on a few people who read your essay before sending.
  • Do not impersonate yourself. Members of the admissions committee are well aware that there are no ideal students, so if you can conclude from your essay that you are a talented athlete with flawless grades in all sciences and months of volunteer work behind your back, the examiners will quickly conclude that you are describing your dreams, not reality.
  • Do not ignore the question you are asked to answer in the personal statement if any. The application form at any university contains a number of topics that you need to cover in the introductory essay. These topics are listed here far from being a smart word and not to give you a general idea of the content – the admission committee really wants to get an answer to these questions.

What art and design tutors are looking for

The underlying message is that tutors want to know about you, your practice, your inspirations, and your aspirations, and for your personal statement to act as written accompaniment to your portfolio and performance at interview.

How to make your art and design statement stand out

Admissions tutors prefer to read personal statements that don't stick to a predictable formula – here are a few tactics to ensure yours packs a punch.

  • Focus on the course: Martin Conreen, design admissions tutor at Goldsmiths, University of London, urges applicants for design courses 'not to over mention art' but to stay focused on design. He also feels some applicants waste too much space on non-relevant factors like their sporting achievements.
  • Your influences: Martin adds he wants to hear who your influences are, why they inspire you, and 'how their work has resonance with your own, or with your own ideas'.
  • Examples of what inspires you: David Baldry, fine art course leader at University Campus Suffolk, echoes this: 'Tell us what inspires you. We want to know what contemporary art interests you, so talk about key artists or an exhibition that made an impression on you. We want to know how you respond to the world creatively, so talk about your experiences or projects you’ve developed independently. Also, edit it so it sounds punchy'.
  • Demonstrate your artistic ambitions: Alison Jones, fine art admissions tutor at Goldsmiths, is looking for 'interesting individuals who have a passion for art and a commitment to developing themselves as artists. Therefore, your personal statement should demonstrate an understanding of your own work, focusing on what is unique about your practice'.
  • Be original: starting your statement with a well-known quote – such as 'fashion is not something that exists in dresses only' – is inadvisable. 189 applicants quoted that exact Coco Chanel snippet last year, so it really won't make you stand out from the crowd.

It's all summed up nicely by Arts University Bournemouth whose advice is:

'Be focused on the field you're applying for (no scattergun approach), name artists or designers you admire, think contemporary, reflect on exhibitions or galleries or events you've visited, and don't think "I'll tell them at the interview" – put it in the statement!'

How To Write An Interior Design Concept Statement

When interior decorating, we all try to develop unique projects and collect the best creative ideas, which is why interior design can rarely have any rules attached to it.

Thereof, you will hardly find a complete step-by-step guide of interior design tips that apply to all homes – the best designers and experts can do is to suggest a basic framework where all developments and improvements will depend exclusively on individual needs.

The problem is, however, that the more freedom you’re given to developing an interior design concept statement, the more challenging it becomes to depict the right additions.

How To Develop Your Interior Design Mission Statement + Examples

mission statement

Interior design is a booming industry, with more and more people wanting to create beautiful and functional spaces in their homes. However, in order to be successful in interior design, you need a well-defined mission statement. This article will teach you how to develop your interior design mission statement, including the key elements that every good mission statement should have.

Importance of a Mission Statement for Interior Design Firms

Mission statements help firms differentiate themselves from the competition. In interior design, where there are often many firms offering similar services, a mission statement can help you stand out and be remembered by potential clients. A mission statement should be more than just a list of the services you offer – it should capture the essence of your interior design firm and what makes you unique.

The mission statement also helps the company keep its focus. When things get busy and there are a million different things vying for your attention, a mission statement can help you stay focused on what is most important to your firm and keep you moving in the right direction.

Elements of a Mission Statement for Interior Design Firms

There are several key elements that every interior design mission statement should have.

Core Values

Your interior design mission statement should include a list of your core values. These are the values that guide everything you do, both in terms of design and in terms of  business. For example, if one of your core values is sustainability, then all of your interior design projects will reflect that value. Your core values should be more than just words on a page – they should be something that you truly believe in.

Reflect on the Company’s Story

Your mission statement should also reflect on the company’s story. What is it that drew you to interior design in the first place? What drives you to create beautiful spaces for people? Telling your company’s story helps potential clients understand what motivates you and why you do what you do.

Share Customer Benefits

Your mission statement should also share the unique benefits you offer customers. What is it that your interior design firm can offer that other firms cannot? How will working with you make your clients’ lives better? When writing your mission statement, keep the client top of mind and make sure that everything you include speaks to their needs and wants.

Share the Company’s Purpose

Last but not least, your interior design mission statement should share the company’s purpose. Why did you start your firm in the first place? What are you hoping to achieve through your work? When writing your mission statement, make sure that you capture the heart of what your company is all about.

Example Mission Statements

To help you get started, here are a few examples of interior design mission statements from some of the top firms in the industry.

  • “At XYZ Interior Design, we create beautiful, functional spaces that reflect our clients’ unique styles and personalities. We believe that everyone deserves to live in a space that they love, and it is our mission to make that happen.”
  • “Our mission at ABC Interior Design is to provide our clients with high-quality, innovative design solutions that meet their needs and exceed their expectations. We pride ourselves on our customer service and our commitment to excellence.”
  • ” DEF Interior Design is dedicated to creating stylish, functional, and sustainable spaces that improve the lives of our clients. We believe that good design should be accessible to everyone, and we work hard to make that a reality.”
  • “At GHI Interior Design, we believe that your home should reflect your unique style and personality. We offer customized design solutions that are tailored to your individual needs and tastes. Our goal is to make your vision a reality, and we work closely with you to make sure that happens.”
  • “Our mission at JKL Interior Design is simple: to create beautiful spaces that improve the lives of our clients. We believe that everyone deserves to live in a space that they love, and it is our job to make that happen. We achieve this by working closely with our clients to understand their needs and wants, and by providing high-quality, innovative design solutions.”

As you can see, there is no one right way to write a mission statement. The important thing is that you capture the essence of what your interior design firm is all about and that you communicate your company’s purpose, values, and benefits clearly.

Keep these tips in mind as you write your own interior design mission statement, and be sure to review a few examples before finalizing yours. With a little bit of thought and effort, you can create a mission statement that accurately reflects your interior design business and helps you attract your ideal clients.
