  • Leaders from the world’s twenty largest economies are gathering in Bali, Indonesia this week to discuss the world’s most pressing challenges.
  • High on the list of agenda items this year are US-China trade relations, the war in Ukraine and the likely economic recession.
  • This is the first meeting of the Group of 20 (G20) since Italy hosted the 2021 G20 summit in Rome.

This year’s Group of 20 (G20) summit is being chaired by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who has hailed the two-day gathering as an opportunity “to build a healthier, more just, and a more sustainable order” in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The G20 Countries

The G20 is a forum of the twenty largest economies in the world that meets regularly to discuss the most pressing issues facing the global economy.

Together, the G20 accounts for more than 80% of world GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the population of the planet. The current members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States, plus the European Union.

What does the G20 discuss?

The G20 started in 1999, following the Asian financial crisis, as a forum for finance ministers and central bank governors from the major developed and emerging economies to discuss global financial issues.

Amid the global financial crisis in 2008, it grew into the leaders’ summit, a place where presidents and prime ministers could get together for two days to try to solve the world’s economic problems.

Successive meetings of G20 leaders were held in Washington DC in 2008, London in early 2009 and Pittsburgh in late 2009, and have since become annual fixtures.

In the run-up to summits, senior officials known as "sherpas" thrash out the issues for discussion, with the aim of getting G20 members to reach agreement at the summit. Like sherpas in the Himalayas, they help guide their leaders through often difficult terrain, and do the diplomatic legwork.

There are also meetings of finance ministers and central bank governors, trade representatives and anti-corruption working groups.

Who is invited?

The G20 presidency rotates between members and is picked from different regions each year. In 2015, the G20 host was Turkey. This year it is China’s turn, with the theme: “Toward an innovative, invigorated, interconnected and inclusive world economy.”

Spain is a "permanent invitee", and the G20 host also invites a handful of guest countries as a way of reaching out to non-members. However, to invite more nations to join the G20 would make decision-making too cumbersome, the thinking goes.

The heads of a number of international organizations also participate, including the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation.

Why the summit matters

While the G7 is made up of rich countries, the G20 manages to get leaders from both developed and emerging economies around the table, representing a far broader range of views.

It has been credited with reaching important agreements such as the trillion-dollar pledge in 2009 to help struggling economies during the global financial crisis.

Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown addresses a news conference at the G20 summit at the ExCel centre, in east London April 2, 2009. World leaders agreed a trillion-dollar deal on Thursday to combat the deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Sometimes, however, it has proved hard for such a diverse group of countries to reach consensus. The hope that the G20 agenda would broaden beyond the global economy to include discussion of political issues, such as security and climate change, has not really materialized.

What is the G20, who’s in it and what happens at its summits?

The Group of Twenty (G20), a collection of twenty of the world’s largest economies formed in 1999, was conceived as a bloc that would bring together the most important industrialized and developing economies to discuss international economic and financial stability.

Its annual summit, a gathering of G20 leaders that debuted in 2008, has evolved into a major forum for discussing economics as well as other pressing global issues. Bilateral meetings on the summit’s sidelines have occasionally led to major international agreements. And while one of the group’s most impressive achievements was its robust response to the 2008 financial crisis, its cohesion has since frayed, and analysts have criticized its lackluster response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under President Donald Trump, the United States clashed with the rest of the group on trade, climate, and migration policy. President Joe Biden promised a return to multilateral cooperation, achieving a new global agreement on corporate taxation, but tensions have continued to grow as high- and low-income countries have increasingly diverged on major issues. The 2023 summit in New Delhi, India, is expected to address climate change, economic development for low-income countries, and the ongoing fallout from the war in Ukraine.

Who is in the G20?

The G20 is a  forum comprising  nineteen countries with some of the world’s largest economies, as well as the European Union (EU). The countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States. Spain is invited as a permanent guest.

At a summit in late 2022, Biden announced that the United States would support membership for the African Union (AU), a bloc of fifty-five states in Africa. Other G20 members, including China and France, have previously expressed their support. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi  has said  that AU membership will be on the agenda at the 2023 summit. If approved, the AU would be the group’s first new member since its inception.

Every year, the leaders of G20 members meet to discuss mainly economic and financial matters and coordinate policy on some other issues of mutual interest. Examples include when the G20 discussed how to address a covert  Iranian nuclear plant  at the 2009 summit and when the forum debated how to administer a  partial cease-fire  in Syria at the 2017 summit. The G20 is not a permanent institution with a headquarters, offices, or staff. Instead, its leadership rotates on an annual basis among its members, its decisions are made by consensus, and implementation of its agenda depends on the political will of the individual states.

Why does the G20 matter?

Together, the nations of the G20 account for around 80 percent of global economic output, nearly 75 percent of global exports, and about 60 percent of the world’s population. These figures have remained relatively stable while the corresponding rates for  Group of Seven  (G7) nations, a smaller group of advanced democracies, have shrunk, as larger emerging markets take up a relatively greater share of the world’s economy.

The G20 was formed in 1999, in the wake of the Asian financial crisis, to unite finance ministers and central bankers from twenty of the world’s largest established and emerging economies. A decade later, at the height of the global economic crisis, the G20 was elevated to include heads of state and government. Many experts credit the G20 with quick action; former CFR fellow Stewart Patrick said the group “ rescued a global financial system in free fall .” In 2008 and 2009, G20 nations agreed to spending measures worth $4 trillion to revive their economies, rejected trade barriers, and implemented far-reaching reforms of the financial system.

Since then, many observers say, the G20 has struggled to achieve similar success on its goals of coordinating monetary and fiscal policies, achieving higher growth, and rooting out corruption and tax evasion. Geopolitical analysts Ian Bremmer and Nouriel Roubini  have argued  against the G20’s utility, saying that a “G-Zero” world is emerging instead—one in which countries go it alone or form ad hoc coalitions to pursue their interests. In 2021, then CFR President Haass and senior fellow Charles A. Kupchan called for a  new concert of powers , contending that “fly-in, fly-out” G20 summits are often bogged down by “haggling over detailed, but often anodyne, communiqués.”

But experts point out that the G20’s membership is still more representative of the current international balance of power than blocs of countries formed earlier, such as the G7. Several rising democracies, including Brazil, India, and Indonesia, belong to the G20, as do other influential autocratic countries, such as China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. (Russia’s G7 membership was suspended indefinitely in 2014 following its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region.) For this reason, Patrick described the 2008 elevation of the G20 as a  watershed moment in global governance  and argued that the group was the  best-suited forum  for tackling the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What’s been on the agenda?

The G20 initially focused largely on broad macroeconomic policy, but it has expanded its ambit.  The 2016 summit in Hangzhou, China, broke new ground when U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping formally announced their countries’ accession to the Paris Agreement on climate.

Economic and financial coordination remains the centerpiece of each summit’s agenda, but issues such as the future of work, climate change, and global health are recurring focuses as well. Broader agendas became more common in the decade following the global financial crisis, when the G20 was able to turn its attention beyond acute economic crisis management. But at recent summits, countries have struggled to reach a unified consensus—the hallmark of previous iterations of the conference—as the interests of high- and low-income economies continue to diverge.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a major test for the group, which Patrick has criticized for largely failing to move beyond “uncoordinated national policies.” However, G20 countries did agree to  suspend debt payments  owed to them by some of the world’s poorest countries, providing billions of dollars in relief.

Although climate change has been a focus of recent summits, meetings have yielded  few concrete commitments  on the issue. At the 2021 Rome summit, countries agreed to curb  emissions of methane  and end public financing for most new coal power plants overseas, but they said nothing about limiting coal use domestically. (China, the world’s largest emitter, permitted more domestic coal power plants in 2022 than any year since 2015). At the 2022 gathering, Indonesia agreed to close coal power plants in exchange for $20 billion in financing from high-income countries, including the United States. But as of 2023, it is still building coal-fired plants.

As the 2023 host, India is framing the agenda around issues facing lower-income countries in the so-called Global South. These include rising debt levels, persistently high inflation, depreciating local currencies, food insecurity, and increasing severe weather events associated with climate change. However, analysts expect divisions over the Russian invasion of Ukraine to continue to split the group. None of the ministerial meetings that precede the G20 leaders’ summit has produced a joint communiqué, which prior to the war was a staple of such meetings. With Russian President Vladimir Putin absent at the 2022 summit in Indonesia, leaders issued a joint declaration deploring the “aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.” In August 2023, Putin said he would again skip the summit.

What have been the main points of contention?

Geopolitical tensions, heightened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine but also spurred by strategic competition between China and the United States, have increasingly threatened cooperation. In the United States, bipartisan legislative efforts have aimed to  deny Russia standing in the World Trade Organization  (WTO) and other international institutions. Russia’s participation in the G20 has grown contentious, with some Western countries seeking to exclude Moscow, though members including China and Brazil have opposed that idea.

G20 members could also face divisions over how to address the economic shocks disproportionately affecting emerging economies. The energy crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine has led to food scarcity and soaring energy prices, as well as inflationary pressures that have engendered a  stronger U.S. dollar  at the expense of depreciating currencies in emerging economies. As a result, more countries are turning to international lenders for bailouts; over one hundred countries have requested emergency assistance from the  International Monetary Fund (IMF)  since the beginning of the pandemic. IMF lending to distressed economies  soared to a record high  of $140 billion in 2022. The G20 introduced a common framework for debt treatment ahead of its 2020 summit, but only four countries—Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Zambia—have requested debt relief under the framework. Experts blame divisions between lender countries. “No framework for coordination among official creditors can work if official creditors don’t have enough in common to work together,” CFR senior fellow Brad W. Setser  wrote  in March 2023. “The ‘Common Framework’ exists in name only.” International lenders are now  considering ways  to reform the framework.

The group’s long-standing commitment to an  international order based on WTO principles  of reducing tariffs and other trade barriers has in recent years collided with growing economic competition between great powers. President Trump launched a multifront trade war involving several G20 members, imposing a suite of tariffs on China that the Biden administration has largely left in place. Biden has also pursued other measures meant to “de–risk” the U.S. economy from China’s. In August 2022, he signed the CHIPS and Science Act, which encourages advanced technology manufacturing to move back to the United States. That measure was followed by strict export controls that restricted China’s ability to buy certain chips made anywhere in the world with U.S. inputs, and an  outbound screening regime  prohibiting some U.S. investments in Chinese sensitive technology sectors.

There is also still friction within the group regarding climate change. China, India, Russia, and Saudi Arabia reportedly  blocked an agreement  on phasing out coal use and fossil fuel subsidies at a July 2021 meeting of environment ministers. And following the invasion of Ukraine, Germany and other G20 countries have  reneged on previous promises  to stop financing fossil fuel projects overseas.

What happens on the sidelines of the summits?

Some experts have emphasized the G20’s flexibility compared with other multilateral institutions, noting that it can help shake up a sometimes rigid geopolitical order. This flexibility extends to the summits themselves, where bilateral meetings between heads of state and government often focus on issues outside the formal agenda.

These tête-à-têtes, whether planned or impromptu, often grab headlines due to their diplomatic gravity. In Hamburg, Germany, in 2017, Trump met Putin for the first time, holding multiple meetings that lasted several hours each and  sparked concerns  among U.S. allies within the G20. The following year, a bilateral meeting again overshadowed the G20 summit, this time between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders agreed to delay threatened tariff hikes.

The 2022 Bali summit hosted the first in-person meeting between Biden and Xi since Biden was elected in 2020. Though the two leaders did not agree to any tangible measures, they committed to keeping diplomatic lines of communication open.

Many experts stress the substantial effects of personal relationships among leaders on the creation of foreign policy. By gathering so many leaders together, G20 summits offer rare opportunities to develop such relationships and recast bilateral ties.

What Is the Group of 20 (G-20)? Countries, Influence, and Agenda

g20 presentation

The Group of 20, also called the G-20, is a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 of the world's largest economies, including those of many developing nations, along with the European Union . Formed in 1999, the G-20 promotes global economic growth, international trade, and regulation of financial markets.

Because the G-20 is a forum, not a legislative body, its agreements and decisions have no legal impact, but they do influence countries' policies and global cooperation. Together, the economies of the G-20 countries represent more than 80% of the gross world product (GWP), 75% of world trade, and 60% of the world population. After its inaugural leaders' summit in 2008, the leaders of the G-20 announced that the group would replace the  G-8  as the main economic council of nations.

Key Takeaways

  • The G-20 is a leading forum for global financial issues whose members include major developed and developing economies.
  • Although not a legislative body, its discussions help shape financial policy within each of its member countries.
  • Recent agenda items at G-20 meetings have included cryptocurrency, food security, and trade wars.

Policy Focus of the Group of 20 (G-20)

The agenda and activities of the G-20 are established by its rotating Presidencies, in cooperation with the membership. Initially, the group's discussion had a focus on the sustainability of  sovereign debt and global financial stability. Those themes have continued as frequent topics at the G-20's summits, along with discussions about global economic growth,  international trade , and the regulation of financial markets.

Under the current Indonesian Presidency, the G-20 is focused on three interconnected pillars of action: global health architecture, digital transformation, and sustainable energy transition. The 2021 summit was held in Rome on Oct. 30 and 31. Some of the topics at that summit included: supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and women-owned businesses, the role of the private sector in the fight against climate change, and sustainable development.

Previously, the 2019 G-20 Osaka summit focused on the global economy, trade and investment, innovation, the environment and energy, employment, women's empowerment, development, and wellness. In 2018, Argentina proposed a focus on the future of work, infrastructure for development, and a sustainable food future. That meeting also included talks on the regulation of  cryptocurrencies and the U.S.-China trade war .

The year the Group of 20 (G-20) was formed.

The Group of 20 (G-20) vs. the Group of Seven (G-7)

The G-20's ranks include all members of the Group of Seven (G-7) , a forum of the European Union and the seven countries with the world's largest developed economies : France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Formed in 1975, the G-7 meets annually on international issues, including economic and monetary matters.

Apart from being older than the G-20, the G-7 has sometimes been described as a more political body because all of its meetings have long included not only finance ministers but chief ministers, including presidents and prime ministers. However, the G-20, since the global financial crisis of 2008, has increasingly held summits that include political leaders as well as finance ministers and bank governors.

And where the G-7 exclusively comprises developed countries, many of the additional 12 nations that make up the G-20 are drawn from those with developing economies. Indeed, having a forum at which developed and emerging nations could confer was part of the impetus for creating the G-20.

Russia and the Group of 20 (G-20)

In 2014, the G-7 and G-20 took different approaches to Russia's membership after the country made military incursions into Ukraine and eventually annexed the Ukrainian territory of Crimea. G-7, which Russia had formally joined in 1998 to create the G-8, suspended the country's membership in the group; Russia subsequently decided to formally leave the G-8 in 2017.

Though Australia, host of the 2014 G-20 summit in Brisbane, proposed to ban Russia from the summit over its role, Russia has remained a member of the larger group, in part because of strong support from Brazil, India, and China, who together with Russia are collectively known as the BRIC nations.

The debate over Russia's membership in the G-20 was renewed in March 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine. While attending G7 and NATO summits in Brussels on March 24, President Biden called for Russia's expulsion from the group. But Russian officials insisted Vladimir Putin would attend the G-20 summit scheduled to take place in Indonesia in November.

Membership of the Group of 20 (G-20)

Along with the members of the G-7, 12 other nations currently comprise the G-20: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, and Turkey.

In addition, the G-20 invites guest countries to attend their events. Spain is invited permanently as is the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ; two African countries (the chair of the African Union and a representative of the New Partnership for Africa's Development) and at least one country invited by the presidency, usually from its own region.

International organizations such as the International Monetary Fund , the World Bank, the United Nations, the Financial Stability Board, and the World Trade Organization also attend the summits.

The work of ensuring the continuity of the G-20 is handled by a "Troika," represented by the country that holds the Presidency, its predecessor, and its successor. The current Troika countries include Italy, Indonesia, and India.

The G-20 has been criticized for lack of transparency, encouraging trade agreements that strengthen large corporations, being slow to combat climate change, and failing to address social inequality and global threats to democracy.

Criticism of the Group of 20 (G-20)

Since its inception, some of the G-20's operations have drawn controversy. Concerns include transparency and accountability, with critics calling attention to the absence of a formal charter for the group and the fact that some of the most important G-20 meetings are held behind closed doors.

Some of the group's policy prescriptions have also been unpopular, especially with liberal groups. Protests at the group's summits have, among other criticisms, accused the G-20 of encouraging trade agreements that strengthen large corporations, of being delinquent in combating climate change, and in failing to address social inequality and global threats to democracy.

The G-20's membership policies have come under fire, too. Critics say the group is overly restrictive, and its practice of adding guests, such as those from African countries, is little more than a token effort to make the G-20 reflective of the world's economic diversity. Former U.S. President Barack Obama noted the challenge of determining who can join such a powerful group: "Everybody wants the smallest possible group that includes them. So, if they're the 21st largest nation in the world, they want the G-21, and think it's highly unfair if they have been cut out."

14 november 2022, opening remarks of the secretary-general at press conference at g20 summit, antónio guterres.

Ladies and gentlemen of the media,

This G20 summit comes at crucial time.

Our world is facing the most pivotal, precarious moment in generations.

People everywhere are getting hit from every direction – battered by runaway climate change and squeezed by a cost-of-living crisis.

Geopolitical divisions are triggering new conflicts and making old ones even more difficult to resolve.

The G20 is ground zero for bridging divisions and finding answers to these crises and more.

First, climate – the defining challenge of our age.

I have just come from the COP27 Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.    The goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees is slipping away.

We are dangerously close to tipping points at which climate chaos could become irreversible.

Science tells us that global heating beyond that limit poses an existential threat to all life on earth.

But global emissions, and temperatures, continue to rise.

I tend to agree that insanity consists in doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. It is obvious we need a new approach.

And so, I have proposed a historic pact between developed and emerging economies – a Climate Solidarity Pact that combines the capacities and resources of developed and emerging economies for the benefit of all.

G20 countries are responsible for 80 per cent of global emissions.

G20 leaders can make or break the Climate Solidarity Pact that I intend to present again tomorrow.

Under this pact, they would make extra efforts this decade to keep the limit of 1.5 degrees alive.

Wealthier countries and International Financial Institutions would provide financial and technical assistance to help the emerging economies accelerate their renewable energy transition.

The Climate Solidarity Pact can save lives, livelihoods, and our planet.

It can help end dependence on fossil fuels while providing universal, affordable, sustainable energy for all.

Second, the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDGs are issuing an SOS.

Developing countries cannot access the finance they need to reduce poverty and hunger, and invest in sustainable development.

I therefore urge G20 economies to adopt an SDG stimulus package that will provide governments of the Global South with investments and liquidity, and offer debt relief and restructuring.

This will enable emerging economies to invest in healthcare, education, gender equality and renewable energy. To invest in their people and rescue the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The SDG Stimulus is a minimal and necessary step to ease the food and energy crises and prevent further suffering and hardship down the line.

G20 countries are the world’s most powerful economies, with a majority on the boards of Multilateral Development Banks, and so they can and must make it happen.

My interventions at this Summit will focus on the food and energy crises, and on the digital transformation of our economies and societies.

My message on food is that we need urgent action to prevent famine and hunger in a growing number of places around the world.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, and efforts to ensure Russian food and fertilizers can flow to global markets, are essential to global food security.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative has already helped to stabilize markets and bring food prices down.

Every fraction of a percent eases hunger and save lives.

Meanwhile, we must do more to ease the global fertilizer crunch.

Fertilizer prices are up to three times higher than before the pandemic, and we are working to end all obstacles to the free flow of Russian food and fertilizers to global markets.

Our engagement with the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom has helped remove many of the impediments to market access.

These products are not subject to sanctions, but suffer indirect impacts.

And so, we are working nonstop to resolve all remaining issues, chiefly around payments, and to renew the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

On energy, the war in Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the dangers of our addiction to fossil fuels. It is the best possible argument for the fastest possible transition to renewable energy.

And on digital transformation: the world is looking for leadership.

Powerful tech companies are running roughshod over human rights and personal privacy and providing platforms for deadly disinformation, in pursuit of profits.

Let’s be clear: disinformation kills. Undermining public health kills and these are life-and-death issues.

We urgently need global guardrails on technology, and I will suggest a way forward based on a Global Digital Compact for an open, free, secure and inclusive internet.

A Compact to deliver on universal connectivity; on a human-centred digital space that protects free speech and privacy; and on the safe and responsible use of data.

I am also calling for a global code of conduct that promotes integrity in public communications and promotes information literacy.  Ladies and gentlemen of the media,

Today, as we welcome the eight billionth member of our growing human family, we must think ahead. By 2050, the world’s population will be approaching ten billion.

Action – or inaction – by the G20 will determine whether every member of our human family has a chance to live sustainably and peacefully, on a healthy planet.

And thank you for your attention. I’m at your disposal to answer a few questions.

What Is the G20 and What Does It Do?

The Group of 20 nations aims to unite world leaders around shared challenges. Here is what to know as this year’s summit meeting kicks off in India.

President Emmanuel Macron of France, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, President Biden, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain seated at a table with placards of their countries.

Established in 1999 after a series of major international debt crises, the Group of 20 aims to unite world leaders around shared economic, political and health challenges. Here is a look at what the group is and does.

The G20 includes 19 countries and the European Union.

In addition to the United States, its members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey. The African Union is also poised to join after an invitation on Saturday from Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India.

Collectively, the group’s members represent more than 80 percent of the world’s economic output.

It is a creation of the more select Group of 7, an informal bloc of industrialized democracies. Supporters argue that as national economies grow ever more globalized, it is essential that political and finance leaders work closely together.

The G20 summit is held annually.

The G20 meeting brings together finance ministers and heads of state representing the members. It bills itself as the “premier forum for international economic cooperation.”

The heads of state first convened officially in November 2008 as the global financial crisis began to unfold. The summit meeting is hosted by the nation that holds the rotating presidency; this year, it’s India.

The meeting produces a joint statement.

The two-day summit usually focuses on several core issues around which its leaders hope to reach a consensus for collective action.

The goal is to conclude the gathering by issuing a joint statement committing its members to action, although the declaration is not legally binding. But one-on-one meetings between leaders on the sidelines often overshadow official business.

Freire's praxis at the G20: aligning Kids 20 coverage with teacher and student training

The theoretical and practical training sessions are another step in the project which, in an unprecedented way for the forum of the world's largest economies, seeks to include the "future of the countries", as many refer to young people, in the current debates through the active participation of youths as reporters. Both Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia have already hosted meetings with students, teachers, and the G20 coordinators.

The training took place on Tuesday (28) morning and afternoon, with the active participation of the students. Photo: Sandra Barros/Seeduc Rio de Janeiro.

The G20 Brasil presidency ends on November 30 this year, when South Africa takes over. But the discussions and experiences with the world's largest economies will live in the memories and practices of the young Kids 20 reporters, including one hundred youth from the Rio de Janeiro state educational system. The students took part in a very special training session with representatives from the G20 and Itamaraty (the federal body that monitors Brasil's international relations), and even "people from television" such as comedian Hélio de La Peña.

The meeting was held at Casa G20 (the G20 House) located across from Ipanema Beach, bringing together approximately 100 students and teachers. Participants learned about the dynamics of the world's largest economies, discussed communication as a personal and professional development tool, and attended training workshops for content production in networks, audiovisual, radio, and press.

In addition to the training sessions, the meeting marks the formal debut of the G20 Youth Reporter Program, created specifically to cover the events and topics covered by the forum of the world's largest economies in Rio de Janeiro and Brasil. In this regard, Roberta Barreto, Rio de Janeiro’s State Secretary of Education, underlined the significance of hosting the event at Casa G20, featuring an artistic program signed by writers and journalists Ruy Castro and Nelson Motta.

"This marks the inception of a profoundly significant project within the state education network. Let this day not only signify the commencement of a journey, but may it also be imbued with cherished emotional moments, etched in your hearts and memories. Let it serve as the genesis of a prosperous future, where you can proudly proclaim that it all started here," stated the secretary. This endeavor is slated to evolve into a lasting government endeavor, embodying the educational legacy of the G20.

Among the practical training courses, the radio workshop at the Casa G20 studio was a hit. Photo: Sandra Barros/Seeduc Rio de Janeiro.

"The project is great because it opens access for young people to promote encounters, an essential part of any initiative. Simple actions like these take shape and become differentiated movements. This is fantastic," said Ambassador Joel Sampaio, Itamaraty’s Special Advisor for Social Communication.

The project collaborates with students from intercultural schools where the curriculum already integrates the study of foreign languages and diverse cultures. One of these students is Marcela Procópio, who attends Centro Integrado de Educação Pública (CIEP) Governador Leonel de Moura Brizola - Intercultural Brasil-França, a school named after the pioneer who established the educational model it follows. Marcela expressed, "Initiatives like this broaden our perspectives and enhance our involvement with global issues. Actively engaging daily in shaping the world we envision is vital for our growth."

"Watching these young individuals gearing up for such a significant event is truly inspiring. Our aim here is to support and foster the personal, civic, and professional development of everyone involved," remarked comedian and actor Hélio de La Peña, wrapping up the morning session of the meeting with his easygoing style. His presentation set the tone for what student coverage strives to achieve: bringing the G20 discussions to a broader audience, making complex topics accessible, and offering diverse perspectives.

The content produced by the students, including all the Kids 20 content, will be streamlined on the G20 official website and on digital channels made available by the Rio de Janeiro state government.

Youth from Brasilia also in training

CEF 03 students asked questions about the G20 and the coverage they would join. Photo: Audiovisual/G20.

Discussing the G20 amidst the names of Frida Kahlo, Maria da Penha, Guimarães Rosa, Nise da Silveira, and/or Anita Malfatti, was part of the training experience in Brasilia. This took place before lunchtime, as conversations simmered in the cafeteria of Centro de Ensino Fundamental (CEF) 03, located in Sobradinho, one of the administrative regions of Brasilia, Federal District.

These renowned figures lend their names to the classrooms at CEF 3, where elementary students from grades 6 to 9 are grouped in the Full-Time teaching model. They engage in workshops encompassing painting, ballet, capoeira, music, contemporary dance, handicrafts, agroforestry, drawing, yoga, kung-fu, and communication, all central to the Kids 20 project.

The meeting at the school brought together students, teachers, the G20 communications coordinator, and the media communications consultant from the Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic (SECOM/PR), gathered in a half-moon formation around a school desk.

Contrary to any expectation that the more than 25 students present would lose interest or disperse by lunchtime or the weekend, they remained engaged throughout, listening attentively and posing insightful questions. "How are the G20's priorities determined?" "How are the presiding countries selected each year?" These were some of the questions raised, many of which the students themselves helped answer. "Is it like the World Cup, with a different country each time?" they speculated.

Joyce Gomes, a student from CEF 3, remarked, "Today has shown me that the G20 is even more expansive than I had imagined, with remarkable projects like the ones I've witnessed here. I aspire to share these projects with others, enlightening them through various means."

Young Joyce exchanged notes with consultant Cristiane Parente. Photo: Audiovisual/G20.

"In a society largely focused on adults, incorporating the perspectives of children and adolescents is essential. They are disproportionately affected by issues like climate change, offering insights often overlooked by adults. We have much to learn from them. Kids 20 has the potential to enlighten the world, demonstrating not just theoretical ideas but practical effectiveness," remarked Cristiane Parente, media education consultant at SECOM/PR's Digital Policy Secretariat.

"Engaging students in the G20 brings the G20 into people's homes. Young people uniquely challenge our perspectives and broaden our understanding. They immerse themselves in the event, generating content in their own voices, aligning with the meeting's goal of making concepts accessible to all," added Carlos Alberto Júnior, communications coordinator for G20 Brasil.

At CEF 3, the communication workshop emphasizes audiovisual production, showcased on the student channel "Arena 3." Additionally, the students feature on Brasília's Community TV, a station with a 27-year history. Since 2009, the TV has also served as a Culture Point, housing the project "Pontão de Cultura TV em Movimento: Escola de Mídia Comunitária." In 2023, CEF 03 achieved recognition in the Basic Education Index (Ideb), ranking among the top three final-year elementary schools in the Federal District for school flow and average performance in assessments.

Coverage already underway

From an educommunication perspective aligned with the principles of Paulo Freire, the renowned Brazilian educator and a significant figure in global pedagogy, the theoretical-practical relationship serves transformation. Alongside their training courses, students are actively engaged in content production. For instance, youths from Rio de Janeiro participated in the Chancellors' Meeting in February. In May, those from Sobradinho covered meetings of the Education and Culture Working Groups, even conducting an interview with Brasil’s Minister of Culture Margareth Menezes.
