I have one template per month and then change the date and wording each week!

Behind the weekly newsletter I send home different homework pages based on all sorts of factors. I like having options!!!! I made at least one page for each topic I teach throughout the year. Also, I have never been a fan of longgggg homework. I find that it is too overwhelming and I think students just need *quick* reinforcing practice each night so that played a big role in the way I set up my homework. You can see a little more about the homework pages below.

homework first class

Again, I like having options and I know most teachers do too! Based on the skills I’m teaching that week, a student’s ability level, parent involvement, I will send home what I believe to be a reasonable HW packet for the week. You can do the same for your students!

homework first class

^^ Again, it’s all up to YOU!^^

Maybe you don’t send home homework because in your community it doesn’t get sent back. Well, these quick check-ins can easily be made into morning work that only takes minutes to complete while students practice their skills.

If you think this type of first grade homework might be for you or you want to try and switch it up this year, go ahead and take a closer look at some of the pages in my unit by clicking the unit below and downloading the preview!

Let me know what you think!

Here are some closeups of a few pages (more to be seen in the preview!):

Students should be provided a 100-bead abacus or base ten blocks for these two-digit addition problems. The problems can even involve a regrouping, or making a new ten, but students are not solving the problems by writing the numbers under each other (adding in columns). What math skills should I teach my first grade class?

The skills you teach your first graders will depend on your curriculum and their individual learning needs.

Generally, students should learn basic arithmetic operations within 20, understand numbers up to 120, tell time using both analog and digital clocks, interpret simple data, and understand basic geometric concepts including shape attributes and partitioning.

If you’re following the Common Core curriculum , you will want to cover the following standards:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking:

  • Using basic addition and subtraction within 20 to solve a variety of word problems, including those involving putting together or taking apart numbers, comparisons, and unknowns in all positions. This can be achieved using visual aids like objects and drawings, or equations with symbols for unknown numbers.
  • Solving word-based math problems involving the addition of three whole numbers whose total is less than or equal to 20.
  • Applying properties of operations as strategies for addition and subtraction.
  • Understanding subtraction as a problem of finding an unknown addend.
  • Relating the process of counting to the concepts of addition and subtraction.
  • Adding and subtracting numbers within 20 fluently, and applying strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing numbers, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums for ease of calculation.
  • Understanding the meaning of the equal sign and being able to determine if addition and subtraction equations are true or false.
  • Determining the unknown whole number in equations involving the addition or subtraction of three whole numbers.

Number and Operations in Base Ten:

  • Counting up to 120, starting from any number less than 120. This also involves reading and writing numerals within this range and representing a number of objects with a written numeral.
  • Understanding that a two-digit number is composed of tens and ones.
  • Comparing two two-digit numbers based on the meaning of the tens and ones digits. This involves using the symbols '>', '=', and '<' to record the results of comparisons.
  • Adding within 100, including adding a two-digit number to a one-digit number, and a two-digit number to a multiple of 10. This involves using concrete models or drawings, strategies based on place value, and properties of operations. Students are also expected to relate their strategies to a written method and explain their reasoning. It includes understanding that when adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens to tens and ones to ones, and occasionally it may be necessary to compose a ten.
  • Given a two-digit number, mentally finding 10 more or 10 less than the number without having to count, and being able to explain the reasoning behind it.
  • Subtracting multiples of 10 (ranging from 10 to 90) from other multiples of 10 in the same range. This is done using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value and operations. Students should relate their strategy to a written method and explain their reasoning used.

Measurement & Data:

  • Telling and writing time in hours and half-hours using both analog and digital clocks.
  • Organizing, representing, and interpreting data with up to three categories. This involves asking and answering questions about the total number of data points, the number of data points in each category, and comparing the number of data points between different categories.
  • Distinguishing between defining attributes (like triangles being closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (such as color, orientation, or size). This includes building and drawing shapes with defining attributes.
  • Partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares and describing these shares using terms like halves, fourths, and quarters. Also, understanding that decomposing a shape into more equal shares results in smaller shares. This includes the ability to describe the whole shape as two or four of these shares.

Dice games are fantastic in the classroom! With this one, kids practice their addition facts and get a little work with subitizing too. The concept is so simple: Each player rolls the dice and adds up their numbers. The highest sum wins that round. This is one of those first grade math games that can be expanded by adding a third die. (You can also use playing cards.)

11. Play Shut the Box

Wood box with hinged tiles numbered 1 to 9 and a pair of wooden dice, which can be used to play first grade math games

This game has been played for hundreds of years, but it’s a fun and sneaky way to practice addition facts fluency. The goal is to “close” each of the numbers in the box from one to nine by rolling the dice. For instance, if a player rolls 11, they may close 1, 2, 3, and 5, as these add up to 11. If no numbers are available to add up to the dice total, play passes to the next player and continues until someone finally “shuts the box” by closing the last available number. You can play this game with a specially designed box , as it has been played for years. You don’t need the box, though; simply have kids write out the numbers 1 through 9 and cross them out as they play.

12. Assemble some addition grab bags

Adolescent girl doing homework.

What’s the Right Amount of Homework?

Decades of research show that homework has some benefits, especially for students in middle and high school—but there are risks to assigning too much.

Many teachers and parents believe that homework helps students build study skills and review concepts learned in class. Others see homework as disruptive and unnecessary, leading to burnout and turning kids off to school. Decades of research show that the issue is more nuanced and complex than most people think: Homework is beneficial, but only to a degree. Students in high school gain the most, while younger kids benefit much less.

The National PTA and the National Education Association support the “ 10-minute homework guideline ”—a nightly 10 minutes of homework per grade level. But many teachers and parents are quick to point out that what matters is the quality of the homework assigned and how well it meets students’ needs, not the amount of time spent on it.

The guideline doesn’t account for students who may need to spend more—or less—time on assignments. In class, teachers can make adjustments to support struggling students, but at home, an assignment that takes one student 30 minutes to complete may take another twice as much time—often for reasons beyond their control. And homework can widen the achievement gap, putting students from low-income households and students with learning disabilities at a disadvantage.

However, the 10-minute guideline is useful in setting a limit: When kids spend too much time on homework, there are real consequences to consider.

Small Benefits for Elementary Students

As young children begin school, the focus should be on cultivating a love of learning, and assigning too much homework can undermine that goal. And young students often don’t have the study skills to benefit fully from homework, so it may be a poor use of time (Cooper, 1989 ; Cooper et al., 2006 ; Marzano & Pickering, 2007 ). A more effective activity may be nightly reading, especially if parents are involved. The benefits of reading are clear: If students aren’t proficient readers by the end of third grade, they’re less likely to succeed academically and graduate from high school (Fiester, 2013 ).

For second-grade teacher Jacqueline Fiorentino, the minor benefits of homework did not outweigh the potential drawback of turning young children against school at an early age, so she experimented with dropping mandatory homework. “Something surprising happened: They started doing more work at home,” Fiorentino writes . “This inspiring group of 8-year-olds used their newfound free time to explore subjects and topics of interest to them.” She encouraged her students to read at home and offered optional homework to extend classroom lessons and help them review material.

Moderate Benefits for Middle School Students

As students mature and develop the study skills necessary to delve deeply into a topic—and to retain what they learn—they also benefit more from homework. Nightly assignments can help prepare them for scholarly work, and research shows that homework can have moderate benefits for middle school students (Cooper et al., 2006 ). Recent research also shows that online math homework, which can be designed to adapt to students’ levels of understanding, can significantly boost test scores (Roschelle et al., 2016 ).

There are risks to assigning too much, however: A 2015 study found that when middle school students were assigned more than 90 to 100 minutes of daily homework, their math and science test scores began to decline (Fernández-Alonso, Suárez-Álvarez, & Muñiz, 2015 ). Crossing that upper limit can drain student motivation and focus. The researchers recommend that “homework should present a certain level of challenge or difficulty, without being so challenging that it discourages effort.” Teachers should avoid low-effort, repetitive assignments, and assign homework “with the aim of instilling work habits and promoting autonomous, self-directed learning.”

In other words, it’s the quality of homework that matters, not the quantity. Brian Sztabnik, a veteran middle and high school English teacher, suggests that teachers take a step back and ask themselves these five questions :

  • How long will it take to complete?
  • Have all learners been considered?
  • Will an assignment encourage future success?
  • Will an assignment place material in a context the classroom cannot?
  • Does an assignment offer support when a teacher is not there?

More Benefits for High School Students, but Risks as Well

By the time they reach high school, students should be well on their way to becoming independent learners, so homework does provide a boost to learning at this age, as long as it isn’t overwhelming (Cooper et al., 2006 ; Marzano & Pickering, 2007 ). When students spend too much time on homework—more than two hours each night—it takes up valuable time to rest and spend time with family and friends. A 2013 study found that high school students can experience serious mental and physical health problems, from higher stress levels to sleep deprivation, when assigned too much homework (Galloway, Conner, & Pope, 2013 ).

Homework in high school should always relate to the lesson and be doable without any assistance, and feedback should be clear and explicit.

Teachers should also keep in mind that not all students have equal opportunities to finish their homework at home, so incomplete homework may not be a true reflection of their learning—it may be more a result of issues they face outside of school. They may be hindered by issues such as lack of a quiet space at home, resources such as a computer or broadband connectivity, or parental support (OECD, 2014 ). In such cases, giving low homework scores may be unfair.

Since the quantities of time discussed here are totals, teachers in middle and high school should be aware of how much homework other teachers are assigning. It may seem reasonable to assign 30 minutes of daily homework, but across six subjects, that’s three hours—far above a reasonable amount even for a high school senior. Psychologist Maurice Elias sees this as a common mistake: Individual teachers create homework policies that in aggregate can overwhelm students. He suggests that teachers work together to develop a school-wide homework policy and make it a key topic of back-to-school night and the first parent-teacher conferences of the school year.

Parents Play a Key Role

Homework can be a powerful tool to help parents become more involved in their child’s learning (Walker et al., 2004 ). It can provide insights into a child’s strengths and interests, and can also encourage conversations about a child’s life at school. If a parent has positive attitudes toward homework, their children are more likely to share those same values, promoting academic success.

But it’s also possible for parents to be overbearing, putting too much emphasis on test scores or grades, which can be disruptive for children (Madjar, Shklar, & Moshe, 2015 ). Parents should avoid being overly intrusive or controlling—students report feeling less motivated to learn when they don’t have enough space and autonomy to do their homework (Orkin, May, & Wolf, 2017 ; Patall, Cooper, & Robinson, 2008 ; Silinskas & Kikas, 2017 ). So while homework can encourage parents to be more involved with their kids, it’s important to not make it a source of conflict.

Teaching Tip: A More Strategic Syllabus Day

Rather than reviewing syllabus material, instructors can consider these five ideas to implement on the first day of class to promote students’ engagement and academic success.

Rather than starting class by reviewing the syllabus, professors can choose a more engaging activity.

The first week of classes can be a trudge for college students as they rotate through variations of introductions to their faculty members, the course content and the syllabus. Infamously called “sylly week,” the start of the academic term often feels less serious and engaging for students.

Rather than reading the syllabus for the first class, instructors offer ideas that they use to spice up their first day of class to make the experience more engaging and personal.

  • Introduce yourself.

From the first day, faculty members have the opportunity to set an approachable and personable tone with students by introducing themselves. This introduction should extend beyond name and title and include something personable, such as family makeup, children’s ages or favorite elements about the course, Kevin Steele from Valparaiso University wrote.

This introduction doesn’t have to be verbal. Anthony Lacina from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences likes to arrive early and put on music in the background, and then he introduces himself to students and makes small talk before class starts, he wrote in a Faculty Focus article .

Investing in approachability creates positive outcomes in students as well as better, richer feedback for the faculty member, says Chris Morett, head of the Faculty Approachability Project.

  • Get to know your students.

Professors can also prioritize student success on the first day by learning more about the class . Get-to-know-you activities break the ice, promote positive engagement with the faculty and foster a sense of belonging. Around one-third of students say they want professors to take more of an interest in them to boost academic success, as well, according to data from a 2023 Student Voice survey from Inside Higher Ed , conducted by College Pulse.

These activities could be academic in nature, such as taking a survey of students’ knowledge of the course material, or engage them on a more personal level, like asking their favorite food or how they’d spend an ideal weekend.

Not every instructor is gifted at remembering students’ names , so tips like using photos, writing a seating chart, creating name cards or making introductions during class can help build relationships. Jeffrey Howard from Georgia Tech finds when students introduce themselves at the start of the term, it makes it easier to learn their names later in the course.

  • Create a syllabus assignment.

One of the key elements of the first day of class is reviewing the syllabus to ensure students know where to find relevant information, including course topics, materials, resources, assignments, office hours and more. Rather than having students review the document together during the class session, instructors should consider designing a syllabus assignment that requires students to read the document.

  • ‘Neuromyth’ or Helpful Model?

A quiz, delivered at the start of the first class or due before the second session, or an in-class game can make the document more engaging while still ensuring that students are informed and utilizing it.

  • Set classroom expectations.

In a traditional classroom setting, professors set the tone with rules, expectations and policies. An active learning environment could flip that narrative and have each member of the class, including the professor, establish class expectations that everyone abides by.

Classroom community agreements are one way to build a trusting, empathetic and inclusive classroom experience for participants because it requires collaboration and group value setting, wrote Jesica Siham Fernández in a career advice column for Inside Higher Ed. The approach also fosters positive instructor-student relationships.

  • Start teaching.

Rather than waiting for the second class session to begin covering course topics, instructors can begin teaching earlier when they reconfigure syllabus day.

The first day is an opportunity to introduce new topics and get your students while they’re fresh and before major deadlines, wrote Patrick Bigsby for Inside Higher Ed . “Your students’ curiosity and energy will be relatively high and unfettered by the frustration and fatigue that tends to set in by the first week of November—take advantage!”
