The candidate must have completed a Master’s degree i.e. (MTech/ MSc/ MA/ MPhil/ MBA). And it must be a full-time Master’s course from a recognised university by the government.
The overall grade point average of the candidate’s Master’s program must be at least 55% (or equivalent).
Candidates under SC, ST, and OBC categories will be given 5%- or 10%-mark relaxations. Applicants must present their reservation certificate to use these benefits.
The candidate must pass the PhD entrance exam.
A No Objection Certificate (NOC) f rom the educational institution or company where candidates are employed is required. Candidates must have job experience in a related field for a part-time PhD.

PhD Course Structure

5 Step PhD Course Admission Process

Step 2 Fill Online Admission Form

Step 3 Submit Necessary Documents

The Institute has secured over Rs 398 crores as external research funding in the last 5 years. Yes – A Department intends to admit students under the specified mode. No – A Department does not intend to admit students under the specified mode.

Minimum Eligibility Qualifications

ME / MTech / MPharm / MBA / MPhil (minimum of 60% aggregate)* MSc/BE/BPharm or an equivalent degree (minimum of 60% aggregate)* For admission into Humanities and Social Sciences, MA degree (minimum of 55% aggregate)* For part-time applicants, a minimum of one-year experience in the related field of study is required

In addition, Departments may set specific admission criteria for shortlisting. Meeting the minimum eligibility qualifications does not guarantee admission into the PhD program. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for an admission test, which may comprise a written exam and/or interview. Information on specific Departments and related research activities is available on the Department homepage of respective campuses.

Full-time students

Preferably individuals who would like to pursue PhD in-house, residing on campus.

Part-time students

Preferably individuals who are working in organizations providing basic facilities and an environment for research.

Financial Assistance

Full-time PhD students admitted into the PhD program are eligible to be considered for an Institute fellowship of Rs. 34,000 or Rs. 37,000 per month in the first year based on their qualifications at the time of admission. Students admitted with M.E./M.Tech./M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil. or an equivalent Degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 37,000/-. Students admitted with M.Sc./B.E./B.Pharm. or an equivalent degree are eligible to receive an Institute fellowship of Rs. 34,000/-. These students on successful completion of coursework will receive Rs. 37,000/- from the Semester following the one in which the course work was completed Higher fellowship may be made available in subsequent years. Consideration for Institute fellowship will be as per Institute norms. It will be obligatory on the part of every admitted full time student to undertake 8 hours (per week) of work as assigned to him/her by the institute.

Eligible candidates shall have to appear in i3T – Integrated Test for Teacher Trainee conducted by the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) as per schedule mentioned in the brochure. Admission will be given as per merit list prepared based on marks of i3T

Junior Research Fellowship

Indian Institute of Teacher Education, Gandhinagar (IITE) hereby invites proposal for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) leading to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) under its Ph.D. Programmes being offered; the objective of this fellowship is to provide opportunity to NET-GSLET-GSET-JRF qualified candidates to undertake advance studies and research in the fields of Education leading to Ph.D. Degree in Education

Fellowship : Rs. 31000/- per month.

The Fellowship assistance will be normally for a period of three years and extendable up to four years. It shall be Junior Research Fellowship for the first 18 months for Ph.D. Scholars and Senior Research Fellowship for the next 18 months for Ph.D. Scholars

Prerequisites:

The Fellowship shall be open for all Ph.D. Scholars of the University subject to the following eligibility criteria.The candidate must be admitted in full time (Regular) Ph.D. Programmes at the UniversityThe candidate should not be receiving any grant or research assistance by whatever name called from any other source including UGC.The candidate should not be engaged in any part-time or full time employment of any nature during the entire tenure of Fellowship.The candidate must be present full time at the University during the period of the fellowship.Candidates who are UGC-NET and/or GSLET/GSET qualified can apply for JRF/SRF.

The aim of PhD program in a multi-disciplinary area of public health is to provide training to enhance professional abilities of scholars in research, problem solving, and critical thinking to address public health issues and establish them as thought leaders in public health.

Categories of PhD Students

PhD students will be admitted under following categories:

Regular Applicants with mandatory funding support/ grant/ fellowship for whom minimum residency will be 3 years .

Sponsored A student in this category may either be sponsored by a recognized industrial R&D organization, academic institution (universities/colleges), government organization including PSUs and autonomous bodies, reputed industries (as may be recognized by this Institute) or self-sponsored for doing research at the Institute. The Institute will not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Prospective applicants applying under ‘Sponsored Category’ with NOC from their employer w.r.t fulfilling all the required conditions of coursework and minimum required residency may be considered irrespective of the funding arrangement between the candiate and their employer. Such candidates are expected to arrange their own funding for the research activities and sustenance. The minimum residency under this category will be 6 months.

Educational Qualification

Candidates with a consistently good academic record having Master’s degree in Public Health, any streams of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM), Social Sciences, Medical, Dentistry and allied fields, AYUSH (Alternative System of Medicine in India), Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Veterinary science, Demography, Nutrition, Social Work, Law, Business Administration or any other relevant areas.

Other Essential Criteria

Candidates must have fellowship/scholarship or project funding support (assured for at least 3 yrs) while applying under regular category .
Minimum 2 years of relevant job experience is must while applying under sponsored category .

PhD Duration

Minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years for both the categories – regular and sponsored.

Ph.D Ordinance :

A candidate may present himself/ herself for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Bangalore University, covered under the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000, with the following Ordinance: The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall be conferred on the basis of a thesis prepared and submitted for the purpose.

The thesis shall embody the result of original research carried out by the candidate in a Post Graduate Department of Studies or in an Institution recognized by the University as research centre under the guidance of a Research Supervisor / Supervisors approved by the University.

A PhD guide or supervisor is an experienced person and a tutor who helps students to achieve their PhD and guides them during the entire tenure of their doctorate.

If you are in this article, perhaps you are a doctorate, a professor or someone who is looking forward to becoming a guide or wants PhD guideship. However, it isn’t as easy as a PhD because the experiences and expertise of the guide decide the fate of a research scholar.

So the “should have” qualities in a PhD guide are, experience in their field, expertise in several techniques, decent research background and obviously, affiliation with some institute.

Nonetheless, such criteria are also not enough. Universities have their own rules and regulations for supervisors and one who is willing to be; must have to fulfill all those. But what are those criteria? How does one become a PhD supervisor? All these questions will be answered in this blog article.

But before going ahead I have to announce that I am not experienced enough to guide a guide. But I have collected information from various sources to make it available in one place. I hope this article will help some.

A PhD supervisor with other names: doctorate supervisor, PhD advisor, or a doctorate guide is a mentor of research scholars. Supervisors usually are regular faculties of the university. Now let’s see each point in detail.

Criteria to become a PhD supervisor or guide:

An applicant must have graduation, post-graduation and/or M.Phil and PhD degree in their relevant field which must have been completed from a reputed and well-known university. Note that all the degrees must be achieved from a government-recognized university.

In addition, the applicant should have done research in the subject or related allied subject in which he or she wants to become a guide. Importantly, the fellow applicant must have a doctorate, research or equivalent degree.

To be a doctorate advisor, an applicant must have enough academic experience as a lecturer, professor or assistant professor. A strong academic or teaching experience is required with 10 years of undergraduate and 6 to 7 years of postgraduate teaching experience.

Noteworthy, the experience of only the government-approved universities is counted in the recruitment process. Furthermore, the applicant must be a regular faculty of the university to which he or she wishes to apply. The applicant must be affiliated with the university, anyway.

The applicant should be working as a lecturer, assistant professor and as a professor in the university or affiliated college or school.

The research background and reputation of an applicant in the research fraternity are also taken into consideration during the evaluation process. During their academic tenure, the applicant should have substantial research contributions in their field.

He or she should have enough publication in the form of original research, review articles, short-communication and patent in peer-reviewed internationally approved journals. He or she also has guided students at the undergraduate or postgraduate levels.

Noteworthy, consistency in research work, publications and other research activities are crucial factors for recognition. Such parameters dictate dedication, responsibility and interest in research. In addition to this, patents, copyrighted materials and any IPR product are acknowledged as extra points.

The applicant must have mastery and expertise in techniques, methods, tools and instruments used in their subject.

As mentioned somewhere in the article, the applicant must have experience as a mentor. He or she must have guided students during their Master’s or M.Phil with excellent academic rewards.

The ratio of students guided, students who completed the research and students publication is also counted in the evaluation process. It shows how experienced, consistent and potential the applicant is for guiding the doctorates.

Besides, the applicant should be involved in other research projects or activities like seminars, gatherings and symposiums.

Several professional, technical and scientific organizations prefer more in-depth evaluation for supervisor recognition including the quality of their research, publications and reputation.

A full-time faculty of the university, university-affiliated college or department, state-level scientists or those working in national institutes or laboratories can apply.

The applicant must have at least 5 research publications in peer-reviewed and renowned journals as a first author or second author as a guide but the whole work belongs to the applicant and their students only.

Mentions as an advisor, acknowledgment or fourth author aren’t considered as publication, nonetheless, it would be considered as some extra credit.

All of the applicant’s work must be plagiarism-free and/or their original, in the case of ascertaining the application would be rejected and the applicant can be banned.

The supervisor doesn’t have guideship from other universities, however, he or she may become a co-guide, joint guide and can collaborate with other universities or organizations.

Moreover, the applicant shouldn’t be involved in criminal activities, shouldn’t have any criminal record, and should be devoid of student controversies and allegations.

I think, as per my knowledge, these qualifications are enough to show your interest in becoming a PhD guide. However, rules and regulations vary among universities. Now let us go through the roles and responsibilities of the applicant or supervisor.

As aforementioned, the doctorate supervisor will be a responsible and experienced person with a balanced attitude. He or she would have a positive attitude and balanced behavior towards their research students.

They have to guide or supervise PhD candidates in completing their research.
They should have troubleshooting and problem-solving behavior.
They have active involvement in students’ research work and encourage them continuously.
They also have to teach other post-graduate students too.
They have to actively participate in other university activities and academic works.
They can stand alongside their PhD student in every situation and support them during their emotional, economical and academic setbacks.
They have to always motivate their students.

As a PhD supervisor, a teacher can guide a maximum of 8 to 10 PhD students and 5 M.Phil students at a time.

A PhD degree from a reputed university
5 to 7 years of postgraduate teaching experience or at least 10 years of undergraduate teaching experience.
Broad research experience
Enough publications in internationally reputed journals.
Enough experience in teaching and guiding students.
Note that in some cases, a person with broad industrial research experience or well known national personality or a retired professor can also be a PhD supervisor or guide if they have enough research background.

This article shows that the PhD mentorship recognition process is as difficult as getting admission into PhD, still is not accurate enough. Sometimes PhD advisors also leave their position midway due to lack of experience and frustration, in such cases, students have to face bad consequences.

Some of my friends left their PhD midway because of the bad behavior, incompetence and negative mindset of their supervisor. Some of my female colleagues also left their research midway because of other reasons. The thing is, universities don’t follow their own recruitment process, strictly and appoint the wrong person intentionally or unintentionally.

Such mal-research practices must be stopped, central authorities along with the university have to closely monitor the entire process of supervisor recognition and ensure that the process strictly follows international standards or not.

In conclusion, an applicant for the recognition of PhD supervisor should be an experienced person. But their potential and endurance must be assessed prior to the evaluation process.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided that starting from the 2024-25 academic session, National Eligibility Test (NET) scores will be utilised for PhD admissions, replacing the entrance exams traditionally held by various universities and higher education institutions, as the recent announcement dated March 27, 2024. Consequently, the University of Delhi will implement this new policy, using NET scores for PhD programme admissions from the upcoming academic year.

The weightage for admission will be 70 percent for NET marks and 30 percent for interview marks. NET scores for candidates in Categories 2 and 3 will be valid for one year for PhD admissions.
