'this material, prepared by experienced editors, is certainly very useful'
Indispensable book for non-native speakers
'There are various books dedicated for writing papers and scientific reports for non-native English speakers. To put thoughts on paper usually is not a trivial task for many students and practitioners even in their mother tongue. This task grows enormously if paper has to be written in English by a non-native English speaker. Therefore any assistance, which can improve writing skills and style and reduce hardship of communicating in English with power and a few words, becomes indispensable. The "PhraseBook for Writing Papers and Research in English" serves this purpose splendidly. It is one of a few books, which really helps me, a non-native English speaker, in my work. Unlike many related books and guides, the Phrasebook allows the users to work on own writing; improve the text structure; expand the text with phrases and words most frequently used in academic English. It also encourages the users to improve their vocabulary by suggesting alternative expressions, helping them to familiarize themselves with scientific terminology, give their writing greater richness and variety. I enjoy working with this book and believe if you apply the recommendations, it will produce better a written more polished text. Highly recommended.' Reviewer, Amazon.com.

University and Research Thesaurus
The PhraseBook also includes a University and Research Thesaurus to help you improve your academic vocabulary. A thesaurus helps you write with a richer vocabulary and avoid using the same expressions over and again. A conventional thesaurus has the drawback that it includes synonyms that are unsuitable for university and research writing - informally you may have a hunch , but in university and research writing you put forward a hypothesis . Similarly, thesauruses included with word processors are often inadequate for university and research.
The PhraseBook Thesaurus, on the other hand, is specially compiled for university and research writing, and contains both synonyms (words with a similar meaning) and antonyms (words with the opposite meaning). It has been designed to make it easy to find related words.
- The thesaurus includes key words for university and research writing, such as 'study', 'question', 'theory', 'prove'.
- These key words have simple umbrella headings, so that by looking up for example 'prove', you find alternatives such as substantiate , establish , verify and corroborate .
- Antonyms, such as disprove or fail to demonstrate , are given in lighter text.
- Cross-references to other key words are given in italics, allowing you to find alternatives with a close but slightly different meaning.
Glossary of University and Research Terminology
A great deal of English academic vocabulary derives from Latin and Greek; much has also been borrowed from or via French as well as from other languages such as German, Italian and Arabic in psychology, music and mathematics for example. In addition, many of the abbreviations common in university and research writing - such as e.g. , i.e. and etc. - and many everyday academic terms - such as campus , school and curriculum - also derive from Latin or Greek. As modern coinages such as tele + vision and inter + net show, Greek and Latin elements are still used to create new terms today. Knowledge of some Greek and Latin helps to decipher the meaning of many academic words, not least for speakers from parts of the world with other classical languages.
The PhraseBook includes
- A glossary of university and research terminology
- Greek alphabet
- Glossary of Greek, Latin and other word elements
- SI prefixes
- SI and British-American units

This book is designed to provide a practical guide to the process of writing research papers in the field of language and literature. It leads English department students through the step-by-step process of writing research papers, from the initial research skills of choosing a topic searching sources and taking notes to the skills of drafting, citing, revising and editing. The main purpose of the book is to improve the skills of small-scale academic research leading to a longer-term paper required by many English language departments. Having the following features make the book highly suitable to courses taught in the English departments such as Research Writing, Advanced Writing and Research Skills: • Involving students in a step-by-step approach to research and writing • Exposing students to extensive authentic examples and samples of language and literary writings. • Involving students in a variety of practical tasks relevant to the students’ knowledge and study experience. • Providing students with ample sample student's written excerpts that reflect weak and effective writing skills • Assisting students to make use of a wealth of classified web-based sources that enable them to respond to language and literature research assignments. • Exposing students to easy and exemplified documentation styles. • Involving students in critical reading and critical observation of model authentic written texts
