This type of essay lends itself to two body paragraphs - one explaining the causes and the next discussing some possible solutions.

As is important with any IELTS essay, you must always read the question carefully.

The topic is often narrowed down to a particular group of people or topic.

Narrowing Down the Topic

Stress in Modern Life Essay

The key here is that ' modern society ' is mentioned.

If you just talk about stress in general but don't connect it to modern society you may be in danger of not fully answering the question .

You need to brainstorm some issues specific to the world we live in today that may result in stress.

What things effect us today that did not (or not too such an extent) 10, 20, 30 years ago?

Using Personal Pronouns

Also, you may notice that ' we ' is used a lot in the stress essay.

Remember an IELTS essay is not quite the same as an academic essay you will normally write. It is can be more personal as you only have your own experience to support your answer with.

You should avoid too many personal pronouns if possible such as ' I ' throughout the essay but you may wish to use this to give your opinion or examples from your own experience at times. This is ok, but don't overdo it.

This question specifically says how can ' we ' reduce it. So it is already making it personal. So it is ok to write about what all of us, or ' we ', can do.

Stress Essay Model Answer

Stress is a problem that can have detrimental effects on many people’s lives, and there are various factors in modern society responsible for this. However, there are ways to limit the potential impacts.

The modern world we live in today presents us with many issues that we did not have to cope with in the past. Firstly, there are issues of terrorism that we are constantly confronted with in the media. Whether these are real or not, we are led to believe our lives are in constant danger, be it flying on a plane or travelling on public transport. Climate change is another worry that everyone has to face. The results of a significant rise in temperatures could radically affect our ways of life, and our children’s too. There are also more health issues to be concerned about than in the past, with rises in alzheimer’s, diabetes, and stroke to name but a few. All of these concerns can result in stress.

Tackling such problems will not be easy, but there are measures that can be taken. Governments and the media could play their part by ensuring that instead of persistently bombarding us with such negative images and information about the world in which we live, we are given more positive stories too. However, given this is unlikely to happen, we need to develop our own strategies to distract us from these influences. Of course exercising regularly is one thing we should do as this has been shown to increase endorphin levels and lead to feelings of happiness. Sleeping enough helps us to recuperate and restore our body. Finally, eating properly can improve our health and result in less worry about potential diseases.

All in all, although there are many factors around us today which lead to stress, we can take steps to reduce it. Given that the strains we face in modern society will likely get worse, ignoring it is not an option for many people.

Stress is a very common problem being faced today. Every individual will experience stress in one or the other time.

The term stress has many definitions, Lazarus and Folkman (1984) have defined stress as “an internal state which can be caused by physical demands of body or by environmental and social situations, which are evaluated as potentially harmful, uncontrollable, or exceeding our resources for coping”.

According to David Fontana “stress is a demand made upon the adaptive capacities of the mind and body”.

These definitions indicate that stress represents those conditions under which individuals have demand made upon them, that they cannot physically or psychologically meet, leading to breakdown at one or other of these levels.

Stress is usually thought of in negative terms. But ii can manifest itself in both positive and negative way. It is said to be positive when the situation offers an opportunity for one, to gain something.

Eustress (the Greek word ‘eu’ means good) is the term used to describe positive stress. It is often viewed as motivator, since in its absence the individual lacks the spirit necessary for peak performance. Distress is the term used to indicate negative stress.

Almost any change in the environment- even a pleasant change such as a joyful trip- demands some coping, and a little stress is useful in helping us to adapt. But beyond some point, stress becomes a ‘distress’.

What acts to produce distress varies from person to person, but some events seem to be stressors for every person.

Examples of stressors are:

1. Injury or infections of the body, dangers in environment, major changes or transitions in life which force us to cope in new ways.

2. Physical stressors like noise, pollutions, climatic changes, etc.

3. Hustles of everyday life centering on work, family, social activities, health and finances.

4. Frustrations and conflicts.

The physical, environmental and social causes of the stress state are termed stressors. Once induced by stressors the internal stress state can then lead to various responses. On the other hand, psychological responses such as anxiety, hopelessness, depression, irritability, and a general feeling of not being able to cope with the world, can result from the stress state.

Stress cycles:

Stress has a number of immediate effects. If the stressors are maintained, long-term behavioural, physiological, emotional and cognitive effects occur. If these effects hinder adaptation to the environment or create discomfort and distress, they themselves become stressors and, tend to perpetuate a ‘cycle’ of distress.

Example, a patient spends more money on treatment, may experience continued stress even after the cure of the disease, because repayment of debt cause stress for long time in him or a patient whose leg is amputated after accident may continue to worry about it.

On the other hand, many people have developed ways of coping with stressors, so that they are able to respond adaptively. This is the ‘wellness cycle’. Teaching people adaptive ways of handling stress, so as to promote the wellness cycle is an important part of the newly emerging field of behavioural medicine.

Effects of stress:

Stress is not always harmful. In fact, it is recognised that low levels of stress can even helps for better performance. For example, a student can prepare well for forthcoming examination only if he has some stress. However, excess level of stress is undoubtedly harmful.

The effects of stress are divided into three categories:

a. Physiological effects:

Commonly appearing stress related bodily disorders are-peptic ulcers, hypertension, chronic fatigue, hormonal changes, increased heart rate, difficulty in breathing, numbness of limbs, heart disease and reduction in immunity, etc.

b. Psychological effects:

Anxiety, depression, hopelessness, helplessness, anger, nervousness, irritability, tension and boredom may be experienced.

c. Behavioural changes:

Decreasing efficiency, making mistakes, inability to take decisions, under eating or overeating, sleeplessness, increased smoking, develop addiction to alcohol and drugs, forgetfulness, hypersensitivity or passiveness, accident proneness and interpersonal difficulties are seen.

Stress is linked to disorders such as cancer and heart disorders. There are several mediating variables that determine whether stress becomes dangerous or not. For example, good coping mechanisms which can help to reduce stress, having good social support, often help in reducing stress.

Perception of stress or how a person views stress is also very important. For example, a person may not perceive a situation as stressful whereas the same situation may be perceived as highly stressful by some other person.

People with personality type ‘A’ are more prone to be affected by stress related disorders like cardiovascular diseases. Personality character like hardiness or emotional stability helps to withstand effects of stress.

Hans Selye, a renowned biological scientist defines stress as the nonspecific response of the body to any demand upon it. He termed the body’s response to stressors the “General Adaptation Syndrome” (GAS).

The GAS consists of 3 stages:

1. Alarm reaction:

It is an emergency response of the body. In this stage prompt responses of the body, many of them mediated by the sympathetic nervous system, prepare us to cope with the stressor here and now.

2. Stage of resistance:

If the stressor continues to be present, the stage of resistance begins, wherein the body resists the effects of the continuous stressor. During this stage certain hormonal responses of the body are an important line of defence in resisting the effects of stressors (For example, release of ACTH).

3. Stage of exhaustion:

In this stage, the body’s capacity to respond to both continuous and new stressors has been seriously compromised. The person will no longer be able to face stressor and he will finally succumb to it. The person may develop psychosomatic illness.

The stress leads to many psychosomatic diseases. Treatment for such diseases involves medical help for the physical problems and, at the same time, attention to the psychological factors producing the stress.

Coping with Stress :

There are different ways of coping with stress such as: confronting (facing), distancing (remoteness), self-control, seeking social support, accepting responsibility, escape or avoid (from the stressor), plan a problem solving strategy and positive reappraisal.

Usually two broad type of coping types are seen- Instrumental coping and Emotional coping.

In instrumental coping, a person focuses on the problem and tries to solve it. In emotional coping, the focus is more on the feelings generated by the problem.

Today, self- help remedies, Do to yourself approaches, weight loss clinics and diets, health foods and physical exercise are being given much attention in mass media. People are actually taking more responsibility to maintain good health.

However, some specific techniques to eliminate or to manage more effectively the inevitable, prolonged stress are as follows:

Good physical exercise like walking, jogging, swimming, riding bicycle, playing soft ball, tennis are necessary to cope with stress.

Relaxation:

Whether a person simply takes it easy once in a while or uses specific relaxation techniques such as bio-feedback, or meditation, the intent is to eliminate the immediately stressful situation or manage a prolonged stressful situation more effectively.

Taking it easy may mean curling up with a good book on an easy chair or watching some light programme on television or listening to a light music. Meditation is scientifically proved to be very useful, both physically and mentally to cope with stress.

Behavioural self-control:

By deliberately managing the antecedents and the consequence of their own behaviour, people can achieve self-control. Besides managing their own behaviour to reduce stress, people can also become more aware of their limits and of ‘red flags’ that signal trouble ahead. They can avoid people or situations that they know will put them under stress.

Maladaptive strategies, rigid strategies or relying on one type of coping method lead to increase in the stress. Social support helps reduce the effect of stress. People may provide help, advice, material support or moral support that helps to reduce stress.

In addition to the above, psychotherapy (Beck’s cognitive therapy, Ellis’s rational emotive therapy and Meichenbaum’s stress- inoculation training), skill training, environmental changes, Bio-feedback (control of physical signs such as Blood pressure, headache, etc), family therapy, group therapy, hypnosis, yoga, are found to be very useful. Finally, uses of drugs are some of the other strategies adopted in coping with stress.

Stress is the tension or pressure on the mind when an unwanted condition arises. Stress is known as a situation where one is not happy with the results of the work done. There are many causes of stress, and many things which can cause stress. From household chores to the national and international level, the stress appears on every individual. There are some kinds of stress that appear for a short time, while there are some kinds of stress that prolong for many years upon an individual or upon any company that is called a long term stress or long prevailing stress (Stephens, 2010 p.48). The short term stress is usually caused by work load at office, at schools and universities on students. Even a household can feel short term stress if she is not making home activities properly and within the time. Time management is a key factor, plying an important role in controlling and creating stress. While a viral infection to the patient and also creates a short term stress. These short term stresses can be ruled out with the passage of time. These do not have effect of the health as these stresses go on with the life. But when it comes to long term stress, like any chronic disease, permanent tension at work place, any student not doing well in academics, or personal problems at home, these can create a lot of problems health wise. One can even loose life if this long term stress go on for a longer period of time and is not addressed properly and accordingly. In biological words, stress is a common and normal factor, and it fights with the external world in situations that are hard to face. Now we will discuss in details that how many kinds of stress are present and how they affect our body system, lives and our working.

Cognitive Theories of Stress and The Issue of Circularity. 63-80 Broadly speaking and more technically speaking, there are many theories present about the stress (Richard S.Lazarus, 1986.p 63-80). The writer, Lazarus has explained these theories in detail in his work, and showing how the person responds to the stress. In one of the theory, the response of the same person to three or more situations is recorded. And it was found that a person may not feel stress in all situations. For example, if a person is exposed to relations, work load and other social contacts. A person may not take all these issues in priority. He may respond more to the work pressure rather than the other two. So stress for him is in a workplace. Similarly, if there is another person, and that person is exposed to the above situations, he may respond differently to each situation. So from this point of view, it has become clear that the stress occurrence depends on each and every individual. Now after knowing well about the reasons and causes of stress, we will find out that how one can fight against any kind of stress. Whatever the reason of stress is, the main point is how to deal with the stress (Theorell, DEC,1999.p.616-624). One should know the basic reason of stress. When once the basic reason is known, it is easy to fight against the stress. Sitting with friends, or near ones, even watching an hour of the recreational program can relieve stress. One when feels stress in a noise or due to dirt, can take a vacation, go out and get stressed out (Siddique, 2003. p.455-486). So it means from the writer point of view that environment adaption depends on the person’s will how an individual respond to the stress and how then an individual tries to eliminate or curtail stress.

According to the writer stress management is entirely upon individual will power. In some areas of the world, there is some stress relieving centers. These centers provide a comfortable zone for the stressed out people. But apart from these centers, one has to manage itself the stress. One can manage stress if they keep the following activities in their mind; - If something is bothering, we should first try to neglect that thing, should not take a stress until or unless unavoidable or uncontrollable. - We should try to adjust ourselves to every situations and environment. By adjusting easily, we can take less stress (Weinberg, 29- SEP- 2010.). - And third and the final thing is, if we cannot neglect any situation, we should try to release the fact that we have no other choice, and we will have to survive in such conditions. So by accepting the problem, one will not fell as much stress as much in other case.

How to cope with stress:

Indigenous students at the University of Windsor are being offered support during exams to help with stress and anxiety management.

The university's Aboriginal Education Centre is handing out wellness packages to students as exams are underway for the next two weeks.

Kat Pasquach, Aboriginal outreach and retention co-ordinator, said  "tensions are high" and "students are definitely in disarray." Many are looking for someone to listen to them, she said.

"Time management is the biggest thing right now, juggling schedules," Pasquach said on CBC Radio's Windsor Morning .

"A lot of our Indigenous learners are mature students, older with families, and they're really trying to manage their study time and then their children's schedules in school and getting them to practices and, you know, just wanting to spend time with their parents."

Pasquach said distributing the wellness kits is all about making sure students are "grounded." 

Brock Pitawanakwat, co-ordinator of the Indigenous program at York University, said exam season is known to be "a high stress time" for Indigenous students and everybody who works on campus.

Making 'traditional medicines' accessible to students

Pasquach said she wanted to make "traditional medicines" accessible to students, and the kits were packaged with this in mind.

  • Braids of sweet grass: The wellness kits contain braids of sweet grass "that we would normally burn sort of like an incense, if people aren't familiar with the practice of smudging. But it lets off a really light floral fragrance. And smudging is a practice of cleansing. We use it to pray. It's grounding. And [sweet grass is] one of the medicines that are most locally available to this region." 
  • Pouches with smudge and supplies: Also included are pouches — some made of leather and some hand-sewn by a student on campus. "So, she put together cotton pouches and inside there are sage sticks, which is another medicine that we will use to smudge. So, there's sage in there, there's matches in there, there's a little bowl in order to burn the medicine so it doesn't catch fire anywhere."
  • Cedar oil: Inside the kits, students will also find cedar oil, which is also used to smudge. "The oil is actually very cleansing and very calming and it's good, and it's used in the space where you wouldn't necessarily be able to burn medicines. So, let's say you're about to walk right into your exam, you could put a little dab of oil on your wrist and then you have the scent and you have that calming essence there with you. We find that oils are very helpful — they're used in hospitals a lot in places where you can't mudge." 
  • Other items: The kits also contain snacks, colouring books with Indigenous artwork, journals. The latter is included "for them to be able to take notes or jot down any stressers."

The Aboriginal Education Centre has put together 50 kits and Pasquach said they will be available over the next two weeks for students to stop in and collect one. 

'A way to to connect'

In addition to the self-care element, Pasquach said the wellness kits are designed to help Indigenous students feel more connected to their culture.

"That's definitely the number one thing that students are looking for, especially if they're coming from their home communities, which is nowhere near Windsor region," she said.

"They're just looking for a way to connect and the cultural differences, and I would even say the culture shock that often happens when students are coming to the city and then being in an institution — every student knows it's different and it's hard and it can be very challenging to navigate post-secondary. So, when you have a little bit, a little piece of home while you're studying at the university, I think it just helps ground people and feel connected to the community."

Higher levels of anxiety, stress

Pitawanakwat said Indigenous students face higher levels of anxiety and stress, for various reasons.

He said often university students who are coming from Indigenous communities may be first generation, whose parents or grandparents did not go to post secondary institutions, and the students would be navigating the college or university experience without much guidance.

"I think there's also this whole broader societal issue that we're reckoning with in terms of residential schools and that's not that far away,"  said Pitawanakwat.

"In some instances you're only talking about a generation or two away where the education experience was highly hostile, where kids were essentially there to have the Indigenous part of them taken away."

Failing an exam not the end of the world

Pitawanakwat, an associate professor, is reminding students that "preparation is key." He said "getting sleep, getting outdoors, taking breaks" can also help achieve a successful exam outcome.

Pitawanakwat said while failing an exam can sometimes feel like the end of the world, it is not.

"The most important thing is to show up. That's another thing that can be a real challenge — people think, 'Oh, it's a lost cause — I'm not going to even go.' I think that that's like the worst possible course of action because even if a student writes an exam and has a failing grade, they're still learning something in the process."

Long-haul drivers to get stress management classes

In a bid to lessen road accidents, the Ministry of Health and Population plans to impart stress management lessons to drivers, especially those operating on long routes.

The stress management classes will help drivers fight stress and keep calm while driving, officials hope.

“We have sought a budget for stress management classes for drivers working on long routes,” said Dr Pomati Thapa, chief of the Mental Health Section at the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division. “We hope they will be effective in lessening road traffic accidents in the country.”

Road accidents have emerged as a major cause of death in Nepal in recent years. According to a report of the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey-2022, on average, 14 deaths occur due to accident injuries per 100,000 people in Nepal. More males (11 deaths per 100,000) than females (three deaths per 100,000) die due to injuries inflicted during road accidents, the report states.

The National Planning Commission estimated the road accident death rate in Nepal to be 15.9 per 100,000 people. Overall, there were 14,736 injuries and 2,789 deaths related to road crashes in the fiscal year 2018–2019. A report by the Nepal Police showed that a total of 2,883 individuals died and 7,282 others sustained severe injuries in road accidents during the fiscal year 2021–2022.

However, the World Health Organisation’s 5th Global Road Safety Status Report , published in December 2023, estimated 8,479 road traffic deaths in 2021. The report shows a 71–77 percent increase in Nepal’s absolute number of deaths from road traffic accidents in 2013.

The NDHS report shows that a large number of those involved in traffic accidents have non-fatal injuries. Overall, 1,088 individuals per 100,000 population (301 per 100,000 females and 787 per 100,000 males) sustain nonfatal injuries due to road accidents or crashes. Nearly two thirds (63 percent) of those who were injured in road accidents in the last 12 months had a cut or an open wound, while 28 percent had broken bones, 23 percent percent had internal injuries, and 13 percent sustained head injuries.

One fifth (21 percent) of the severely injured individuals lost limb function, while five percent suffered brain damage.

There were 1,102 deaths and injuries per 100,000 people due to road accidents and injuries in the 12 months preceding the survey.

Experts say many drivers of public transport work from morning to evening. Some even have to drive up to 15–16 hours.

“As humans, drivers get stressed from work load, they also have family problems, and lack rest and sleep,” said Dr Bashudev Karki, a consultant psychiatric at Nepal Mental Hospital. “This type of programme [stress management training] will help drivers remain calm and not lose patience while on the wheels. We should not forget that several lives could be at risk when drivers lose patience.”

Some drivers opt for substance use–alcohol and drugs—to cope the stress. Some even get addicted. The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division said that traffic police in Kathmandu have regularly been carrying out substance tests on drivers.

“We carry out substance tests on drivers on a regular basis,” said Posh Raj Pokhrel, a deputy inspector general of Nepal Police. “We will take legal actions on those found using substances while driving.”

Pokhrel said that drivers too get stressed due to the nature of job, workload and other personal issues and that stress management training will help lessen the number of road accidents.

As part of a global commitment, Nepal has adopted the SDG Target 3.6 on road safety, under which the country aimed to halve the number of fatalities and injuries by 2030.

Worldwide, road traffic injuries are the eighth leading cause of death among people of all ages and the leading cause of death among children and young adults in the age group 5–29 years. The burden of traffic deaths is disproportionately high among the low- and middle-income countries with relation to the size of their populations and the number of motor vehicles in circulation, according to the World Health Organisation .

Injuries sustained in road traffic accidents cause considerable economic losses to individuals, their families, and nations. Nations also suffer social losses as a result of accidents, according to the UN health body.

It almost time! Millions of Americans across the country Monday are preparing to witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse as it passes over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It's a sight to behold and people have now long been eagerly awaiting what will be their only chance until 2044 to witness totality, whereby the moon will completely block the sun's disc, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness.

That being said, many are curious on what makes the solar eclipse special and how is it different from a lunar eclipse.

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when any celestial object like a moon or a planet passes between two other bodies, obscuring the view of objects like the sun, according to NASA .

What is a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, presents a spectacular sight for viewers and confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

Lunar eclipses are often also referred to the "blood moon" because when the Earth's shadow covers the moon, it often produces a red color. The coloration happens because a bit of reddish sunlight still reaches the moon's surface, even though it's in Earth's shadow.

Difference between lunar eclipse and solar eclipse

The major difference between the two eclipses is in the positioning of the sun, the moon and the Earth and the longevity of the phenomenon, according to NASA.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, says NASA.

Another major difference between the two is that for lunar eclipses, no special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the spectacle and one can directly stare at the moon. However, for solar eclipses, it is pertinent to wear proper viewing glasses and take the necessary safety precautions because the powerful rays of the sun can burn and damage your retinas.

Investing in the stock market can seem like a daunting task when one is just starting out. One way for investors to ease their initial fears is to focus on the most dominant and well-known businesses.

Thes e blue chip stocks can add some safety to your portfolio, and perhaps no company embodies that better than Visa (NYSE: V) . This top financial enterprise has been a huge winner over the past decade, producing a total return of 488%.

Even better, it still looks like a no-stress buy.

Avoiding the lending game

One reason Visa looks like a stress-free stock purchase is its business model. Investors are surely familiar with traditional banking entities like JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America . At a high level, these financial institutions take in deposits and lend money to consumers, sometimes via credit cards.

Those unsecured loans create default risk, which requires banks to set aside lots of capital to cover potential loan losses. During economic slowdowns and recessions, those losses can surge. The result is that these banks experience bouts of cyclicality that track the changes in the economy and interest rates.

Visa is less of a financial institution and more of a technology and communications firm. It provides the infrastructure that allows merchants' banks and consumers' banks to interact with each other to facilitate transaction processing. That's a much less risky business model.

An asset-light operation

Another reason Visa is a no-stress buying opportunity builds on the previous point about its business model. This company doesn't earn interest income because it doesn't lend money. Instead, Visa collects a tiny fee each time one of the 4.3 billion Visa-branded cards active now is used as a method of payment. These assessments are usually less than 0.15% of the transaction's dollar amount.

But given that Visa handled a whopping $15 trillion of payment volume in its fiscal 2023, those fees add up to a financially lucrative enterprise. Its operating margin has hovered above 60% in the past five years, which is truly remarkable. It would be a difficult task to find companies more profitable than this one.

Additionally, Visa's technology is largely already built out, so its capital investment requirements are minimal. In its fiscal 2024 first quarter, which ended Dec. 31, the business spent just $267 million on capital expenditures -- 3% of its revenue during the period.

Thanks to its asset-light model, Visa generates tremendous amounts of free cash flow.

Riding the digital payment revolution

Despite being a long-established company with a $553 billion market cap , Visa still has sizable growth prospects. The consensus estimate among Wall Street analysts is that its revenue will grow at a compound annual rate of more than 10% over its next three fiscal years.

A key driver of these gains will be the ongoing secular shift from cash- and paper-based transactions to cashless means of payment. There is still plenty of room even in developed economies for card-based transactions' market share to grow. In emerging markets, the opportunity is even larger.

Huge growth prospects attract competitive forces. In Visa's case, it has had to deal with the rise of various fintech companies trying to encroach on its turf. There's also the possibility that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology could become bigger presences in the payments landscape.

However, Visa has continued to post strong volume, sales, and earnings growth even as these perceived threats to its model have expanded. The company's durability is another reason it would be a stress-free blue-chip stock to buy right now.

Stress has an adverse effect on human health; it leads to numerous health complications if not effectively managed. When stressed, people risk suffering from stress-related complications. According to Ciccarelli & White, 2012, health can broadly be divided as physical health (free of diseases) and psychological health (being able to make sound decisions).

When under stress, an individual’s decision making capacity is hampered making the person psychologically unhealthy (Ciccarelli & White, 2012). This paper discusses the relationship between stress and human health.

There are numerous theories and researches on stress and health, they all agree that stress has an adverse effect on human health; the statement goes “a stressed man is an unhealthy man”. Although human life cannot be free of stress, it becomes unmanaged stress which causes havoc to human body and mind . According to psychologists, human body is “wired’’ to communicate with the state of the mind; the communication is meant to protect threats against predators and other aggressors.

The statements predators and other aggressors used to mean life threatening activities or actions which include meeting deadlines, fighting back, reacting to a certain situation, or making life challenging decisions. The challenge facing human kind is failing to understand the right way to manage stress; in most cases the activities they engage in lead to more stress (Ciccarelli & White, 2012).

When someone is stressed for a long period, he or she exposes his body to uncontrolled brain cortisol and other stress managing hormones, which in turn can result in health complications like eczema, obesity, depression, digestive problems, sleeping challenges, and heart diseases.

Human state of mind determines the kind of life decisions they make; in the event that someone is stressed, his or her mind will be hampered from making sound and reliable decision as their mind, soul, and body are not at peace with each other. Some day-to-day health feelings like fatigue, headaches, and boredom can be attributed to the state of the mind; state of the mind is unhealthy with stress.

Stress affects human body, thoughts and feelings, when the above have been affected, then the behaviors and to some extent the personality of an affected person change. When unchecked, stress results in health complications like high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes (Ciccarelli & White, 2012).

According to Ciccarelli & White, 2012, the human body responds differently to stress; some people are likely to show fast heath deterioration when stressed while others are likely to have slowed health complications. What remain constant is that prolonged stress without proper management will have a negative effect on human health.

Stressed people need to enroll in stress management classes/lessons where they can be trained on basic methods of preventing and managing stress. In the event that an individual is suffering from a certain ailment, and then happens to be stressed, the recovery rate of such an individual is low. There is much connection between the rate of recovery from health complication and stress that the patient has (Ciccarelli & White, 2012).

Stress is a common occurrence in human beings; well-managed stress is of benefit to human beings as it assists when making decisions. However when stress is not managed effectively, it has an adverse effect on human health. Some complications related with ineffective stress management include depression, heart diseases, and diabetes.

It’s Time to End the Quiet Cruelty of Property Taxes

Property taxes, the lifeblood of local governments and school districts, are among the most powerful and stealthy engines of racism and wealth inequality our nation has ever produced. And while the Biden administration has offered many solutions for making the tax code fairer, it has yet to effectively tackle a problem that has resulted not only in the extraordinary overtaxation of Black and Latino homeowners but also in the worsening of disparities between wealthy and poorer communities. Fixing these problems requires nothing short of a fundamental re-examination of how taxes are distributed.

In theory, the property tax would seem to be an eminently fair one: The higher the value of your property, the more you pay. The problem with this system is that the tax is administered by local officials who enjoy a remarkable degree of autonomy and that tax rates are typically based on the collective wealth of a given community. This results in wealthy communities enjoying lower effective tax rates while generating more tax revenues; at the same time, poorer ones are forced to tax property at higher effective rates while generating less in return. As such, property assessments have been manipulated throughout our nation’s history to ensure that valuable property is taxed the least relative to its worth and that the wealthiest places will always have more resources than poorer ones.

Black people have paid the heaviest cost. Since they began acquiring property after emancipation, African Americans have been overtaxed by local governments. By the early 1900s, an acre of Black-owned land was valued, for tax purposes, higher than an acre of white-owned land in most of Virginia’s counties, according to my calculations, despite being worth about half as much. And for all the taxes Black people paid, they got little to nothing in return. Where Black neighborhoods began, paved streets, sidewalks and water and sewer lines often ended. Black taxpayers helped to pay for the better-resourced schools white children attended. Even as white supremacists treated “colored” schools as another of the white man’s burdens, the truth was that throughout the Jim Crow era, Black taxpayers subsidized white education.

Freedom from these kleptocratic regimes drove millions of African Americans to move to Northern and Midwestern states in the Great Migration from 1915 to 1970, but they were unable to escape racist assessments, which encompassed both the undervaluation of their property for sales purposes and the overvaluation of their property for taxation purposes. During those years, the nation’s real estate industry made white-owned property in white neighborhoods worth more because it was white. Since local tax revenue was tied to local real estate markets, newly formed suburbs had a fiscal incentive to exclude Black people, and cities had even more reason to keep Black people confined to urban ghettos.

As the postwar metropolis became a patchwork of local governments, each with its own tax base, the fiscal rationale for segregation intensified. Cities were fiscally incentivized to cater to the interests of white homeowners and provide better services for white neighborhoods, especially as middle-class white people began streaming into the suburbs, taking their tax dollars with them.

One way to cater to wealthy and white homeowners’ interests is to intentionally conduct property assessments less often. The city of Boston did not conduct a citywide property reassessment between 1946 and 1977. Over that time, the values of properties in Black neighborhoods increased slowly when compared with the values in white neighborhoods or even fell, which led to property owners’ paying relatively more in taxes than their homes were worth. At the same time, owners of properties in white neighborhoods got an increasingly good tax deal as their neighborhoods increased in value.

As was the case in other American cities, Boston’s decision most likely derived from the fear that any updates would hasten the exodus of white homeowners and businesses to the suburbs. By the 1960s, assessments on residential properties in Boston’s poor neighborhoods were up to one and a half times as great as their actual values, while assessments in the city’s more affluent neighborhoods were, on average, 40 percent of market value.

Jersey City, N.J., did not conduct a citywide real estate reassessment between 1988 and 2018 as part of a larger strategy for promoting high-end real estate development. During that time, real estate prices along the city’s waterfront soared but their owners’ tax bills remained relatively steady. By 2015, a home in one of the city’s Black and Latino neighborhoods worth $175,000 received the same tax bill as a home in the city’s downtown worth $530,000.

These are hardly exceptions. Numerous studies conducted during those years found that assessments in predominantly Black neighborhoods of U.S. cities were grossly higher relative to value than those in white areas.

These problems persist. A recent report by the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy found that property assessments were regressive (meaning lower-valued properties were assessed higher relative to value than higher-valued ones) in 97.7 percent of U.S. counties. Black-owned homes and properties in Black neighborhoods continue to be devalued on the open market, making this regressive tax, in effect, a racist tax.

The overtaxation of Black homes and neighborhoods is also a symptom of a much larger problem in America’s federated fiscal structure. By design, this system produces winners and losers: localities with ample resources to provide the goods and services that we as a nation have entrusted to local governments and others that struggle to keep the lights on, the streets paved, the schools open and drinking water safe . Worse yet, it compels any fiscally disadvantaged locality seeking to improve its fortunes to do so by showering businesses and corporations with tax breaks and subsidies while cutting services and shifting tax burdens onto the poor and disadvantaged. A local tax on local real estate places Black people and cities with large Black populations at a permanent disadvantage. More than that, it gives middle-class white people strong incentives to preserve their relative advantages, fueling the zero-sum politics that keep Americans divided, accelerates the upward redistribution of wealth and impoverishes us all.

There are technical solutions. One, which requires local governments to adopt more accurate assessment models and regularly update assessment rolls, can help make property taxes fairer. But none of the proposed reforms being discussed can be applied nationally because local tax policies are the prerogative of the states and, often, local governments themselves. Given the variety and complexity of state and local property tax laws and procedures and how much local governments continue to rely on tax reductions and tax shifting to attract and retain certain people and businesses, we cannot expect them to fix these problems on their own.

The best way to make local property taxes fairer and more equitable is to make them less important. The federal government can do this by reinvesting in our cities, counties and school districts through a federal fiscal equity program, like those found in other advanced federated nations. Canada, Germany and Australia, among others, direct federal funds to lower units of government with lower capacities to raise revenue.

And what better way to pay for the program than to tap our wealthiest, who have benefited from our unjust taxation scheme for so long? President Biden is calling for a 25 percent tax on the incomes and annual increases in the values of the holdings of people claiming more than $100 million in assets, but we could accomplish far more by enacting a wealth tax on the 1 percent. Even a modest 4 percent wealth tax on people whose total assets exceed $50 million could generate upward of $400 billion in additional annual revenue, which should be more than enough to ensure that the needs of every city, county and public school system in America are met. By ensuring that localities have the resources they need, we can counteract the unequal outcomes and rank injustices that our current system generates.
