We offer a Health Economics variant of the iPhD in Economics.

The programme runs in the same way, but in Year 1 you'll take Health Economics for Research as a core module. Macroeconomics for Research will be available as an option module rather than core module for students on this pathway.

Training and support

When you study with us, you’ll be asked to join at least one of our research clusters and become a student associate. Teaching opportunities

You’ll be based in the Department of Economics and Related Studies on Campus West. You'll need to be on campus regularly during your first year to attend taught assessments.

Your PhD can be studied through distance learning from Year 2 onwards, subject to supervisory approval. Applicants to the iPhD in Economics are usually required to hold a Bachelors degree in Economics with a 2:1 or 1st class honours (or overseas equivalent), and an MSc in Economics or a closely related discipline, with a high average mark (60% or above, including at least 60% in the dissertation component).

Our doctoral program in Economics provides rigorous training in applied economic analysis, microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, game theory, and econometrics. Our graduates are at the forefront of applied economics research spanning fields like public finance, household economics, international economics, behavioral economics, and labor economics.

The Ph.D. program in Economics at Howard’s Graduate School provides students with rigorous technical training in applied economic analysis, microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, game theory, and econometrics. Our program prepares students for careers in academia, public policy, and government as leading economists, consultants, statisticians, and senior researchers. You'll benefit from Howard’s premier location at the center of policymaking in Washington, DC, and have access to a network of top-ranked and nationally recognized economic institutions, consulting firms, think tanks, and government agencies, including the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Federal Reserve. Doctoral Program

The Ph.D. program is a full time program leading to a Doctoral Degree in Economics. Students specialize in various fields within Economics by enrolling in field courses and attending field specific lunches and seminars. Students gain economic breadth by taking additional distribution courses outside of their selected fields of interest.

General requirements

Students are required to complete 1 quarter of teaching experience. Teaching experience includes teaching assistantships within the Economics department or another department .

University's residency requirement

135 units of full-tuition residency are required for PhD students. After that, a student should have completed all course work and must request Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status.

Department degree requirements and student checklist

1. core course requirement.

Required: Core Microeconomics (202-203-204) Core Macroeconomics (210-211-212) Econometrics (270-271-272). The Business School graduate microeconomics class series may be substituted for the Econ Micro Core. Students wishing to waive out of any of the first year core, based on previous coverage of at least 90% of the material, must submit a waiver request to the DGS at least two weeks prior to the start of the quarter. A separate waiver request must be submitted for each course you are requesting to waive. The waiver request must include a transcript and a syllabus from the prior course(s) taken.

2. Field Requirements

Required: Two of the Following Fields Chosen as Major Fields (click on link for specific field requirements). Field sequences must be passed with an overall grade average of B or better. Individual courses require a letter grade of B- or better to pass unless otherwise noted.

The first and second year are devoted to coursework on concepts and techniques in economic theory and econometrics. The preliminary exam for the PhD occurs at the end of the first year. The Vancouver School of Economics at UBC offers a renowned PhD program and the strengths of a quality research faculty.

Our small cohort sizes provide extensive opportunities for student-faculty interaction, including joint research projects and active supervision, and a diverse offering of specializations for dissertation work.

Each year we typically admit about 15 new students to our program. As a result, our program is small enough to provide extensive research supervision yet large enough to offer expertise in a wide range of fields. Virtually all of the school’s research faculty hold grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and other funding agencies, which provides ample opportunities for research assistantships and dissertation support.

The school manages the British Columbia Inter-University Research Data Centre , is home to the Centre for Innovative Data in Economics Research (CIDER), and has onsite use to the FDZ-IAB Data Access Point. As a result, unique training opportunities, research funding, and access to data and computing resources are available to our PhD students.

In addition to studying with the VSE professors, our students can work with faculty in other discipline in UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, the Sauder School of Business and Computer Science to name a few.

Program Overview

Before coursework in September, students undertake a mathematics review that is administered online in August.

During their first year, students take course sequences in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Each course sequence consists of two courses, each a semester-long.

At the end of the academic year, students write comprehensive examinations in microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Second year

In the second year, students take advanced courses in their chosen fields of specialization and a one-semester course in applied econometric methods. Students also participate in a one-semester seminar course that introduces them to the research process.

Starting in the second year, students begin attending the many research seminars held by the school, furthering their exposure to the research frontier.

Near the end of the second semester, students submit a research paper proposal. Students spend the summer after the second year working on this paper (which is submitted in the first semester of the third year) to familiarize students with the research process and aid and foster the transition to independent study.

In their third year, students reduce their course load and concentrate on research. Students participate in a PhD research seminar course. This seminar provides an opportunity for interaction between faculty and students in their respective fields through research presentations and discussions.

By their third year, students regularly participate in VSE research seminars, usually in one or two fields of specialization. Students are also regular participants in one of the weekly lunch workshop series, where students and professors present their work-in-progress and preliminary research in an informal setting.

Throughout the year, students further their research through self-initiated interaction with faculty outside of the classroom setting.

By the year's end, students form a dissertation committee in preparation for admission to candidacy. Admission involves having their dissertation prospectus approved by the candidate's supervisor(s).

Fourth year

In consultation with their committee, students now work full-time on their dissertation. The goal is to prepare a completed dissertation chapter that students can use as a "job market paper".

Job Market Placement

The VSE is involved in preparing our PhDs "job market package," distributed to employers. The VSE will advertise the student's credentials to employers through several formal and informal channels.

Typically, students complete their job market papers by the end of the first semester of the fifth year. During this semester, students are assisted in the preparation of their "job market package", containing their research papers, curriculum vitae, and faculty reference letters.

In late November, faculty members conduct mock interviews with job market candidates to prepare for interviews at the American Economic Association meeting and the Canadian Economics Employment Exchange.

During this period, the VSE reserves its seminar schedule for its job market candidates, so students can practice their "job market seminar" and receive invaluable feedback from faculty in all fields of the VSE.

Initial job interviews are held every year in December and January. Following interviews, students visit universities and other employers and typically conclude their job search by the end of March.

Dissertation

Students typically complete their dissertation at the end of the fifth year. At this time, the candidate is given an oral examination by members of the VSE. Then the candidate defends the dissertation in an oral examination administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Upon successful defense, the PhD is granted.

Program Requirements

Students are required to enroll in at least 18 credits of coursework in the first year. The standard first-year course program is:

Term 1 (September to December) – ECON 600 Microeconomics I, ECON 602 Macroeconomics I, ECON 626 Econometrics I
Term 2 (January to April) – ECON 601 Microeconomics II, ECON 603 Macroeconomics II, ECON 627 Econometrics II (three credits each)
Comprehensive Exams in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory are written in June

In the second year, students typically take ECON 628 Topics in Applied Econometrics (three credits) plus an additional 21 credits of economics courses at the 500- and 600-level; of these 21 credits, students may take six for audit. By the end of the second year, students are to have completed 42 credits of coursework.

In the third year of the program, students must take ECON 640 Ph.D. Research Seminar (three credits).

Summer research paper

The summer paper familiarizes students with the research process and aid and fosters an independent research transition.

A written proposal for the summer research paper is due on March 15, during the PhD program's second year. Students spend the summer after completing the second-year coursework working on the paper.

A first draft of the paper is due at the start of the third year on September 1. After receiving final suggestions for revision from the faculty, a final version of the research paper is due on October 1.

Candidates for the PhD degree who hold a master's degree must be enrolled for a minimum of two academic sessions (two years) at UBC before taking the final examination for the PhD degree. For students admitted to the PhD program with a Bachelor's degree, the total minimum enrolment period is three academic sessions (three years).

Students usually are admitted to candidacy when they have completed their period of residence and required coursework, passed the comprehensive examinations, submitted the summer research paper, and, most importantly, have their dissertation prospectus approved by their research supervisor.

A student who is not admitted to candidacy within three years from the date of initial registration is required to withdraw from the program. The dean may permit an extension of this period under exceptional circumstances.

The dissertation

A candidate for the PhD degree must submit an acceptable dissertation. The dissertation represents a substantial piece of original research and constitutes a contribution to knowledge in the field of the subject chosen.

The candidate selects their dissertation topic in consultation with a dissertation committee.

Before the research has progressed too far, the candidate presents a detailed dissertation prospectus in a seminar setting; at this point, the prospectus is either formally accepted or rejected by the dissertation committee. Students research under the supervision of a faculty member who serves as chairperson of the committee.

When the dissertation is completed, the candidate is given an oral examination by faculty members of the Vancouver School of Economics and is then asked to defend the dissertation in an oral examination administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

PhD under UQ-IITD Academy of Research (UQIDAR)

Admission and thesis requirements. A good Masters degree in Economics plus one reference is usually required. Students are normally registered for the MPhil degree in the first instance. Once approval of the Research Student's Supervisory Committee has been received, the student's registration is upgraded to PhD status (and backdated to the commencement of the MPhil registration), usually at the end of the first year of study, for which the minimum registration period is double that of full-time study. Candidates are expected to present a thesis of not more than 55,000 words for the MPhil, while for the PhD the maximum length is 100,000 words. International applicants should also see Doctoral School English language requirements

Course overview

Students whose qualifications indicate that they are able to pursue independent research may be accepted to read for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in Economics.

Normally a high level Masters degree in Economics or equivalent is a prerequisite. In general, such an MSc as precondition of entry is sufficient to satisfy admission conditions without need for further coursework requirements, especially as far as formal examinations are concerned.

The Department offers unique research training opportunities both through its dedicated research student seminar series and the wide-ranging set of courses taught on its MSc programmes. These range from economic theory to political economy of development and are oriented around a range of theoretical, empirical and policy issues. Its special subject options provide the highest level of expertise on a large number of topics.
First year research students benefit from a programme of research student training in political economy, different schools of thought, methods and methodologies, and receive formal training sessions on how to do fieldwork.
Training needs of each research students are individually assessed and provided through a combination of generally available courses and individual tuition.
Departmental staff have rich experience in supervising research degree students, matched by their success in bringing students' theses to timely completion. Whilst the Department has a strong commitment to students' early completion of their theses, it also considers it has a responsibility to see that all of its research students obtain a broader training than in their narrowly-defined topic and that they gain skills in theoretical, empirical and policy analysis, in the writing and communication of research results, and in evaluating the work of others.
Research students are expected to form part of the academic community of the Department, participating as appropriate in collaborative research with members of staff, with some opportunities for teaching
SOAS offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary and regional research, and the scope to learn or improve a language where appropriate.
The Departmental Empirical Support Committee (DESC) offers targeted advice to individual students undertaking empirical work.

The first year of training involves attendance at courses and/or seminars but not usually formal written examinations. Students are registered for an MPhil in their first (full-time equivalent) year but usually convert to a PhD after their upgrade viva rather than continuing to the MPhil qualification.

Research student tutors

An essential feature of the MPhil and PhD process is the close working relationship between research students and supervisors. Supervisors and students meet regularly and consult closely. All research students have a Supervisory Committee to cover theoretical, empirical and regionally-specific supervision, as appropriate.

There are Research Student Tutors with overall responsibility for research students, who are available for discussion of general problems. And the Departmental Empirical Support Committee (DESC) offers detailed and individual advice to students about fieldwork and empirical analysis as appropriate. As necessary, upon request, DESC will consider individual student needs and allocate one or more members of staff (not necessarily supervisor) to advise.

Students are required to participate in a workshop/seminar in which research topics and results are presented and discussed by staff and students. In addition, there is a regular Departmental Seminar, to which members of the Department and visiting speakers present papers. There is a strong interdisciplinary basis for research and teaching, and SOAS can claim to be the leading institution in the world researching and teaching in political economy, development economics and area or specific-country studies.

London, moreover, provides an unrivalled opportunity for students to hear papers being read by leading authorities in African and Asian studies, as well as in economics and development more generally. Research students may choose to participate in a wealth of seminars held in both the School and other Colleges and Institutes of the University.

Many SOAS research students spend some time doing fieldwork in the regions of their research. The Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and the School as a whole, through their various connections with individuals and institutions in the universities and governments of Asia and Africa, can usually facilitate this work with personal contacts and introductions.

Scholarships, funding and ESRC recognition

There are a number of scholarships available to research (and MSc) students at SOAS please see Scholarships and Bursaries for further information. But it is a condition of acceptance that students embarking upon a research degree have the capacity to fund the full duration of their studies. There may be some paid opportunities for teaching, normally not in the first year, but these cannot be relied upon and will not begin to cover fees and maintenance fully.

The research degree embodies a core of training in research methods combined with a clear structure of progression thereafter. The training components are explained in the tab Teaching and Learning. The duration and structure of the research degree is as follows

Full-time research degree: Thre years plus one writing up

Year 1- research training.

Research students will take the 'Research Student Seminar 1' course in the Economics Department.

Year 1: Upgrade

Students will normally be expected to pass an upgrade from MPhil to PhD status within 9 months of commencing the degree.

Year 2-3 - Research

Core research undertaken: primary and secondary data collection as appropriate, draft thesis chapters finalised.

Year 4 - Write up

If necessary a fourth year can be taken to write the final thesis. Examination of the thesis will take place after submission within the 4th year

Part-time research degree: Six years, plus one year writing up

The research degree can be undertaken over 6 years:

Research Student Seminar 1 course must be taken over the first two years.
Upgrade will take place within 21 months after initial registration.
Examination will take place after submission within the writing-up year (year 7) at the latest

Teaching and learning

Research training in economics.

All research students are expected to attend a dedicated research student seminar. In addition, a separate programme of research training is offered for first-year students covering various topics including political economy, different schools of thought, method and methodologies, as well as guidance on how to do fieldwork.

to encourage and enable students to complete an original thesis in the expected time.
to provide training and experience in fieldwork and across a variety of schools of economics and in a variety of statistical techniques.
to allow flexibility in training to suit students with different backgrounds and subsequent research needs.
to make available and to monitor first class research supervision with the involvement of at least two members of staff through individual Research Student's Supervisory Committees.
to encourage knowledge of other relevant disciplines and the adoption of an interdisciplinary approach where appropriate.
to equip students with the ability to assess one another's work critically, whether in response to written or spoken presentation.
to obtain language skills as appropriate.
to ensure students experience a congenial and productive environment of the conduct of research through availability of a wide range of facilities and full participation in the intellectual life of the Department and School. Library facilities are outstanding and computing facilities are attuned to student needs.
to emphasise the relevance of research to theoretical, empirical and policy issues.
to draw upon the Department's particular strengths, especially its expertise in different approaches to economic problems and its experience in problems of development, specific regions, and comparative analysis.
to involve students in the specialised Centres of the School where appropriate.
to advise on publication and careers progression.

A broader student-tailored programme of training needs can also be established in the first weeks of study, with a range of courses available from the Department’s MSc programmes. To this end, all students should undertake a Training Needs Analysis with their supervisor in the first weeks of Term 1 .

Supervision

1. The role of the second and third members of the Supervisory Committee (SC) will be focused on the following two core tasks:

Participate in the upgrade process of the student, including the final decision relating to his/her transfer from MPhil to PhD.
Participate in other decisions relating to his/her eligibility for enrolment on Extension of Writing-up (Continuation) Status or, where necessary, termination of registration.

2. In addition to these core roles, the second and third members of the SC may be expected to:

Enhance or augment the supervision of the student by contributing additional guidance and expertise, if required/sought by the student and/or the supervisor throughout the time of active research.
To act on behalf of the supervisor during unforeseen periods of absence. This role will have to be agreed by consent of all parties (student, supervisor and the two members of SC) and one of the two members will be designated as cover in absence for the period in question.

3. Only rarely is joint supervision allowed, for which a strong case would need to be made. Whilst the primary responsibility for guiding student's research and to review written work and progress rests with the supervisor, once upgrade is successfully completed, other members of the supervisory committee must receive student’s thesis drafts at appropriate times, with support also available to students from the Departmental Empirical Support Committee (DESC).

Computing facilities

Full computing facilities are available to postgraduate students. Computers dedicated for the use of research students in the Economics Department are also available. Software available includes word-processing and specialised statistical, econometrics and spreadsheet packages. The School’s computing staff are on hand to assist with general computing problems.

How to apply

In line with our Public Value ethos, our PhD in Economics is a 4-year full-time programme designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to research current and important problems and phenomena facing our economy and society.

Our PhD in Economics programme offers structured research training and supervision by subject experts. It begins with two years of rigorous coursework (MSc Economics (PhD Route) and MRes Advanced Economics), equipping you with the theoretical knowledge and analytical tools necessary to proceed to the research stage. Subject experts will guide and supervise you during your PhD programme.

In addition to your thesis, an oral examination will form an integral part of the assessment of your doctoral research.

We ensure that PhD students are fully integrated members of our research community. As a doctoral student, we will expect you to contribute fully to the advancement of knowledge within your chosen research area. Throughout your candidature, you will be active in presenting your work in the weekly PhD student workshop, which is supervised by faculty, and also in the weekly Economics Section internal workshop . You will also attend a third weekly Economics Section seminar , which is reserved mostly for invited external speakers.

As a PhD student, you will also have an opportunity to seek feedback and share ideas with academics, business practitioners and your postgraduate peers from Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor Universities in a collaborative and friendly atmosphere at our annual Welsh Postgraduate Research Conference (WPGRC) in Business, Management and Economics, jointly funded by Cardiff Business School and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Wales Doctoral Training Partnership .

Our PhD programme is a member of the Quantitative Economics Doctorate Network (QED) which provides PhD students with the opportunity of spending part of their time in any of the departments in the network. Each year, the QED network coordinates a conference for PhD students from the participating institutions providing students with the opportunity to present their work to an international audience, consisting of fellow PhD students as well as senior researchers.

Applications for self-funded opportunities close on 31 May each year.

Our PhD Programme in Economics is a four-year research programme which has received ESRC recognition, with the route currently receiving ESRC studentship awards via the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership.

Both nationally and globally, additional training beyond the first year of postgraduate study is considered vital for research students in Economics. Thus, our programme involves two years of advanced course work, the first at MSc Economics (PhD Route) level in core modules, which cover a broad coverage of the main areas of economics and open up a wide range of research areas for potential study in subsequent stages of the programme.

In the second year, students complete the MRes Advanced Economics, which familiarises students with research questions and methods from the most recent advances of economic theory and applications, aiming to prepare them to carry out research independently. The taught component of the MRes Advanced Economics requires advanced study in the core areas of advanced macro, micro and econometrics, plus a variety of fields including finance, labour, development, political economy, monetary, applied macroeconometrics, international trade and applied microeconomics.

Years three and four comprise the research (PhD) phase.

We have a robust process for monitoring the progress of our PhD students throughout the research (PhD) phase. Each year, there will be two progress reviews, one in winter and one in summer, to support PhD students and ensure their projects are on track to deliver the expected results.

Progression from the MSc Economics (PhD Route) to the MRes Advanced Economics, and from the MRes Advanced Economics to the PhD stage of the programme are not automatic and subject to specific criteria.

In order to progress to the MRes Advanced Economics from the MSc Economics (PhD Route), students are required to pass the taught stage, with an average mark of 60% or higher, and pass their Dissertation.

In order to progress to the PhD stage of the programme, students are required to pass the taught stage of the MRes Advanced Economics programme, with an average mark of 50% or higher, and pass their Research Proposal.

It is also possible for suitably qualified students to join the PhD in Economics programme at the MRes stage, though they will be required to follow a slightly different programme to those students progressing directly from the MSc Economics (PhD Route).

Supervisors

For the MSc Economics (PhD Route) and MRes Advanced Economics, students will be assessed via a series of examinations and assignments for the taught-modules and based on a MSc Dissertation and an MRes Research Proposal, each of maximum of 15,000 words.

Students will be assessed on a Thesis of a maximum of 80,000 words and a Viva Voce Examination for the PhD component of the programme.

After your application

Applications will be reviewed by the PhD Office and the PhD Director. Applicants who do not meet the necessary entry requirements will be rejected outright and cannot re-apply for the same start date. Applications from candidates who meet the entry requirements will be shared with potential supervisors at Cardiff Business School. An appropriate provisional supervisory panel will be formed for any applicant who is made an offer on the programme.

Students applying to pursue a specialist PhD in Economics must have a first class or strong upper second-class honours degree, and a masters’ degree in Economics (or equivalent) with an average mark of at least 65%. Applications can also be considered from holders of a first-class undergraduate degree in Economics or similar subject with significant economic content.

As part of your application process you will have to submit a research proposal demonstrating an interest in pursuing in-depth research in an appropriate area.

The Economics section of Cardiff Business School offers a range of specialist master’s programmes , including the MSc Economics (stand-alone) for those without a sufficient background and wish to enhance their knowledge and understanding of economics.

For September 2023 entry IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with 5.5 in all subskills, or equivalent. You must submit your achieved and valid English language evidence with your application. Please note that English language tests must be no more than 2 years old at the start of the programme.

Streams : The 1+3 stream consists one year of PhD level teaching followed by 3 years of research. The 1+1+3 stream consists of one year of MSc teaching followed by the 1+3 stream.

High level of performance: Achieving an average of 65% in coursework with no unit marks below 55% for both UG and PG degrees as well as 65% mark for dissertation. Typically, offer holders tend to achieve much higher standards than this.

Degree Requirement : Economics degree training should be equivalent to the training given at the University of Manchester. Applicants with degree in quantitative fields other than economics will be considered on a case by case basis. We will not normally consider applicants whose previous studies have been in non-quantitative fields. Our criteria are:

1+1+3 Stream: High level performance in degree equivalent to BSc or MA in Economics from the University of Manchester.
1+3 Stream: High level performance in degree equivalent to the training in the MSc phase of our PhD programme.

Each module is assessed by an unseen written exam, which is usually held in May or June. You can sit your exams at any approved centre around the world. Dr Marcia Schafgans is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE, specialising in microeconometrics and Semiparametric and Nonparametric Estimation techniques. She received her PhD in Economics from Yale University. She is an Econometrics Programme Associate for STICERD (the Suntory and Toyota International Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines).

LSE Summer School Show

About the lse summer school.

LSE’s Summer School is the most well-established and the largest of its kind in the whole of Europe, with over 80 academically rigorous courses on offer. Each year over 6,000 students from 120 nations study at the LSE campus in the heart of Central London.

Courses are taught by LSE faculty and complement the content of this degree. If you complete two Summer School courses you may be able to earn credit equivalent to one course on the degree. As a student on this programme you will receive a 15 per cent discount on tuition fees to attend the LSE Summer School.

To be eligible for this Graduate Diploma programme you must have one of the following:

An acceptable Bachelor's degree, either in a quantitative subject or where you have passed at least two courses in satisfactory mathematical subjects.
An acceptable Master's degree (or any other appropriately accredited Level 7 award) of at least one year full-time duration, either in a quantitative subject or with at least one course in a satisfactory mathematical subject.
An acceptable Level 5 or Level 6 award (e.g. HND or Graduate Certificate) of at least 1 year full-time duration, either in a quantitative subject or with at least two courses in satisfactory mathematical subjects. You also need at least two years' relevant work experience.

Quantitative subjects

Acceptable quantitative degree/award titles include: Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Psychology, Quantitative Management, Quantitative Finance, and Social Sciences with Quantitative Methods or Statistics.

Mathematical subjects

Satisfactory mathematical subjects include: Algebra, Algorithms, Business Mathematics, Business Statistics, Calculus, Computer Mathematics, Differentials, Engineering Mathematics, Geometry, Mathematics, Quantitative Methods, Quantitative Techniques, Statistics or Trigonometry.

English Language requirements

You need to demonstrate a good level of English to be admitted to our programmes. We accept a range of evidence, including proficiency test scores. If you don’t have evidence but believe you can meet the standard, we may consider your case.

We set minimum basic computer requirements because your study resources are accessed via the Student Portal and it is vital that you can access this regularly. For this degree, you will also need Adobe Flash Player to view video material and a media player (such as VLC) to play video files.

The fees below relate to new students registering for the 2024-2025 session. These may be increased by up to five per cent per annum.
