Ever since Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff entered the White House at Vice President Kamala Harris’ side, corporate media have lauded him as the perfect husband and ideal person to denounce what Democrats deem “toxic masculinity.” Emhoff’s recent confession that he impregnated his children’s nanny while married to their mother, however, suggests it’s the Second Gentleman who is guilty of the toxic masculinity he routinely condemns.

A new report from The Daily Mail published over the weekend exposed Emhoff for engaging in an affair that resulted in a child with Najen Naylor, a teacher at his kids’ private school who moonlit as a nanny. At the time, Emhoff was still married to his movie producer ex-wife and the mother of his children, Kerstin Emhoff. The article quotes several sources who confirmed Naylor did not keep the baby but ultimately does not specify whether the child was lost through miscarriage, killed via abortion, or given up through adoption.

Emhoff confirmed the infidelity and the fact that it wrecked his first marriage in a statement released shortly after the report surfaced, but did not mention the alleged child that resulted from it.

“During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions,” Emhoff said . “I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.”

Taking responsibility, of course, does not entail what at least one unnamed source claimed to the Daily Mail was “a financial settlement with Naylor.” In an ideal world, responsibility means pursuing fidelity to your wife and children above all. In cases like this one, responsibility looks like ensuring the survival and fatherly care of the child he helped create.

On its face, Emhoff’s behavior during his extramarital affair strongly contrasts with the brand he has built condemning toxic masculinity.

“There’s too much toxicity. It’s masculine toxicity out there, and we’ve kind of confused what it means to be a man, what it means to be masculine,” Emhoff told MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart in March 2023.

The same day the interview aired, Capehart penned an opinion editorial for the Washington Post hailing Emhoff as “the antidote to toxic masculinity.” Capehart claimed that celebrating Emhoff during Women’s History Month was appropriate because the Second Gentleman is “not only shattering perceptions of gender roles; he is also taking a sledgehammer to toxic masculinity.”

Emhoff’s history of breaking up his own family paired with his continuing role as the face of his wife’s abortion extremism campaign, however, makes him the truly toxic male.

Emhoff knocked up his kids’ nanny, mysteriously rid himself of the responsibility of that child, and has repeatedly lamented pro-life efforts to protect women and children from the irreparable harm caused by abortion.

Now, he spends his time on nationwide tours telling other men to embrace a gruesome practice that harms women and kills children because it protects and preserves their ability to be sexual degenerates.

“[Abortion is] affecting [men’s] ability to plan their lives. And it’s also an issue of what’s next, what other freedoms are at risk. And these freedoms are affecting all Americans, not just women,” Emhoff told NBC’s Yamiche Alcindor ahead of a Men4Choice event in Atlanta in May.

Emhoff’s attempt to win over single women and men by pushing abortion puts him in the ranks of several other Biden administration and Harris for President shills such as Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg . Together, they believe the proliferation, normalization, and celebration of abortion gives men the agency to be noncommittal side pieces, husbands, and fathers — and that’s a good thing.

No amount of corporate media puff pieces praising Emhoff for being the first female Vice President’s feminist wingman can shield the Second Gentleman from his truly toxic motivations.

Emhoff is clearly willing to put his sexual desires above his marital covenant and fatherly commitments. He also promotes an ideology that promises men can use women for their bodies and rid themselves of any children so long as abortion on demand is legal and normalized.

The news of Emhoff’s adultery will likely not have a huge impact on voters weighing whether to throw their support behind his current wife, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, but maybe it should. After all, Harris has embraced and even elevated Emhoff’s anti-woman track as an asset to her abortion-for-all agenda.

Shapiro Faces Scrutiny Over Sexual Harassment Complaint Against Aide

The case has attracted renewed criticism now that Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, is on the short list to be Kamala Harris’s running mate.

Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who is on the short list to be Kamala Harris’s running mate, is facing renewed criticism for his handling of a sexual harassment complaint against a longtime top aide.

The state agreed to pay $295,000 last September to settle the complaint against Michael A. Vereb, then Mr. Shapiro’s head of legislative affairs and one of his closest advisers. An employee had accused Mr. Vereb of making repeated and graphic sexual overtures and then criticizing her job performance after she refused him. She resigned rather than continue to work for him, her only other option, she said in her written complaint.

Mr. Vereb, 57, kept his post for six months after his accuser first alleged misconduct. He resigned only after local reporters obtained a copy of the employee’s complaint, weeks after the settlement had been secretly reached. The governor’s office praised Mr. Vereb for his “dedicated service” when he left.

Mr. Shapiro weathered scrutiny last fall over his office’s response to the case, but it reignited in recent weeks as he became a front-runner to join Vice President Harris on the ballot. She is expected to announce her choice by Tuesday.

The National Women’s Defense League, a nonpartisan group founded in the wake of the #MeToo movement, asked the Harris campaign this past week to look into the case, saying Mr. Shapiro’s office “should have done a better job” in both preventing sexual harassment and handling the complaint. Democrats, including a candidate for Pennsylvania treasurer, have also taken aim at the governor for his office’s response to the allegations.

In a statement on Friday night, Manuel Bonder, a spokesman for Mr. Shapiro, said the governor “was not aware of the complaint or investigation until months after the complaint was filed.” Mr. Shapiro should have been notified of the allegations sooner, Mr. Bonder said, and he has now ordered that he be immediately informed of any such complaint against a senior staff or cabinet member.

Trouble in Wife-Guy Land

Can doug emhoff really be a wife guy if he cheated.

If you know one thing about Doug Emhoff, it’s probably that he’s a wife guy —a guy who defines himself in the public eye in relation to his wife. It’s an identity that in some ways he took on by default: As the nonpolitician spouse of Vice President Kamala Harris, it’s a fact that the greater world wouldn’t know who he was if it weren’t for her. But he’s also a wife guy by design, having consciously branded himself that way in the years he’s been in and around the spotlight: In addition to doing things like signing emails as “Doug Emhoff (Kamala’s Husband)” and wearing T-shirts with his wife’s face printed on them , he occasionally just straight-up refers to himself as a “wife guy.” Perhaps it’s a low bar, to be seen as someone who supports his more famous wife, but it’s one Emhoff has consistently cleared, and in doing so, he’s endeared himself to observers , and become a crucial surrogate for his wife.

So what happens when it comes out that a wife guy has been a less-than-perfect spouse in the past? Last weekend, tabloid reports surfaced that Emhoff’s previous marriage ended after an infidelity on his part. In a statement to CNN , Emhoff admitted that he had an affair while he was still married to his first wife, Kerstin Emhoff. (Though the Daily Mail reported the affair was with the family’s nanny, in other outlets the woman has been identified as a teacher at his daughter’s school.) “During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions,” Emhoff said in a statement . “I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.” That marriage ended in divorce in 2009, and Harris was aware of the affair before she married Emhoff in 2014, according to Politico . The Biden campaign was also reportedly alerted to the situation when Harris was chosen as President Biden’s running mate in 2020.

As cheating scandals go, this one hardly feels explosive: It involves a candidate’s spouse, rather than the candidate herself, and a long-over marriage. Compared with Donald Trump sleeping with a porn actress and attempting to cover it up, thus potentially influencing an election? No contest which is a more pressing national concern! Kerstin Emhoff, for her part, doesn’t seem to want to dwell on Doug’s past indiscretions. Over the weekend, she said in a statement , “Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago. He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together.”

So while Monkey Business this ain’t, it does seem fair to ask how this revelation will affect Emhoff’s status as a wife guy. This is not to say that Emhoff is the first wife guy to have had his loyalty called into question—far from it. In fact, it almost goes with the territory. When the term “wife guy” first emerged a few years ago , it had a more insidious connotation: A wife guy was someone who was likely overcompensating, making “having a wife” and being a male feminist his whole persona in a way that could easily backfire— and it frequently did . One reason people so often seem to be up in arms about comedian John Mulaney’s personal life , for example, is that for a long time in his comedy, he positioned himself as a bigtime wife guy, hence some fans’ sense of betrayal when his first marriage ended. Emhoff was never quite so overt with it. As Vox once put it regarding Emhoff, “While the meme originated to describe husbands trying to gain fame by talking about their spouses, it’s evolved to encompass guys who, like Emhoff, just really like their wives.” Though we once thought of Emhoff as the most benevolent kind of wife guy, these revelations point to the inherent riskiness of branding yourself that way.

Still, anyone who’s capable of thinking with a little nuance should be able to understand that Emhoff cheating on his first wife shouldn’t disqualify him from being a wife guy 15 years later. Relationships are complicated, people are capable of growth and change, and only the people involved know the full story, etc. However, nuanced thinking can sometimes be harder to come across than it ought to be, especially when it comes to issues of infidelity. Over the past few years in particular, a new strain of puritanism seems to have taken hold online. I still shudder at the outsize reaction the internet had to the Try Guys scandal a couple of years ago , when it was revealed that one member of a team of popular content creators had cheated on his wife, right around the same time it came out that Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine had been caught sending some spicy texts to a woman who wasn’t his wife: These events brought to the fore the existence of a contingent of people who seemed to believe that being unfaithful in a marriage was nothing less than cancel-worthy behavior. Though it’s unclear how many people actually think this, their PR is strong, because I somehow keep hearing about them: Just this week, I read a book review in the New Yorker that discussed a community of a people who are on “a mission to reframe cheating as abuse.” When it comes to cheating, the reactions can sometimes seem oddly militant, with many people seemingly unwilling to give anyone the benefit of the doubt, even when the wronged party has agreed to forgive and forget. In this online climate, it seemed likely that Emhoff’s perceived hypocrisy would get called out.

However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see that the reaction to Emhoff’s disclosure of his affair has seemed pretty muted so far. The campaign has shown no signs of halting its sales of merch featuring photos of Emhoff at age 20 , looking like peak long-lost Duplass brother. In the replies to a video Emhoff posted this week of him speaking to Gwen Walz, the spouse of his wife’s new running mate, there were a few people trying to bring up the affair—”Is that the line you used on your children’s nanny?” one wrote—but they all seem like certifiable trolls, easily ignored.

If anything, these events are also a wake-up call, and should reinforce to us that though Emhoff frequently plays the part of wife guy, that’s all he’s doing: playing a part. That’s the job of a politician’s spouse. And he’s doing a good job at that! We can’t actually know anything about the realities of his marriages—the first or second one. It’s a reminder that praising him for his saintly wife guy qualities and villainizing him for being less than perfect in that regard are two sides of the same coin.

Still, it’s nice that most people haven’t decided to force Emhoff to wear a scarlet letter. As one Twitter user cleverly put it over the weekend , “Doug Emhoff is a Born-Again Wife Guy.” Is there such a thing as a born-again wife guy? For now, I’m choosing to believe that there is, and that Emhoff is honoring his vows. Amen.
