La France est un pays à la forme vaguement hexagonale, situé à l’ouest du continent européen et bordé par l’Espagne, l’Italie, la Suisse, l’Allemagne, le Luxembourg et la Belgique. Soixante millions d’habitants naissent, vivent et meurent sur 550 000 km2, et il y a très peu de déserts. La langue majoritairement parlée est le français, avec quelques variantes régionales, plus ou moins bien enracinées. Le latin n’est plus usité depuis longtemps, même si quelques irréductibles s’acharnent encore à l’apprendre à l’école… La monnaie n’est autre que le franc, mais plus pour longtemps : il sera bientôt supplanté par l’euro, dont on pourra se servir indifféremment pour acheter du chocolat belge, des saucisses de Francfort ou des crêpes bretonnes.

Afin de faciliter l’orientation des voyageurs et la mutation des fonctionnaires, le territoire français est judicieusement divisé en 22 régions, 96 départements, 3694 cantons et 36433 communes. Vous n’êtes pas obligés de retenir tous ces chiffres, ils ne vous seront pas demandés à la douane. Le pays étant historiquement très centralisé, tout (ou presque) se passe à Paris. La région Ile-de-France, qui couvre à peine 2,2% du territoire, concentre 19% de la population nationale et représente 29% du produit intérieur brut. Ne croyez pas pour autant que la province (on appelle avec quelque condescendance « province » tout ce qui n’est pas Paris) soit une vaste zone en friches, encore habitée par des sauvages vêtus de peaux de bête qui ne connaissent ni le réfrigérateur ni le four à micro-ondes. On y trouve çà et là de grandes et belles villes comme Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux ou Lille, ainsi que d’innombrables et charmants petits villages. Il y a même des gens qui y vivent. La France est unanimement reconnue par elle-même comme un pays où il fait bon vivre. Le climat est agréable (ni trop, ni trop peu), le paysage très varié (on peut aller de la mer à la montagne sans faire trois jours de route) et la gastronomie est depuis longtemps érigée au rang d’art. Quant à la culture, elle rayonne sur le monde entier qui nous l’envie secrètement. Les touristes étrangers sont probablement d’accord avec ces dernières assertions, aussi modestes qu’impartiales, car ils sont chaque année plusieurs millions à visiter la Tour Eiffel et à bronzer à Saint-Tropez. Wide fertile plains dominate most of the north and west, making France the agricultural epicenter of Europe. The sprawling, forested plateau of the Massif Central, a range of ancient mountains and extinct volcanoes, occupies France's southern interior.

PEOPLE & CULTURE

France is one of the oldest nations on Earth and the most ethnically diverse country in Europe. These deep and broad influences have made France a world leader throughout history in nearly all aspects of culture, including cuisine, wine-making, politics, philosophy, music, art, film, fashion, literature, and sports.

France has ample land area to provide habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. More than 25 percent of its territory is covered with forest, and another 50 percent is countryside or farmland.

Lowland forests are home to deer and wild boar, while the woodlands of the Alps and Pyrenees provide refuge for rare chamois antelope, ibex, brown bears , and alpine hares, among many other species. The Mediterranean coastline is a stopover of millions of migrating African birds , including flamingos , vultures , egrets, and bee-eaters.

The French government has made a broad commitment to preserving open spaces and the wildlife they contain. About 10 percent of the country has been set aside as national or regional parklands and nature reserves.

Introduction to the Country of France

France is one of Europe’s largest countries. It is bordered by six countries other nations: Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg to the northeast, Switzerland and Italy to the southeast and Spain to the southwest. The United Kingdom borders France via the English Channel. The country is considered to be the gateway to Europe as there are several large international airports (two of these can be found in Paris), ferry terminals and the French rail service.

France is the most popular tourist destination in the world. There are many reasons why so many people enjoy visiting the diverse country, including the natural beauty, the amazing climate, outdoor recreational activities such as golf courses, art museums and galleries and so much more. There are many different activities that outline the history of the country which are enjoyable to visitors, especially considering its turbulent past.

Along with these things, France is enjoyed and well-known for its cuisine and wines. It is easy to say that French people love to cook and love their food. Meals in France are joyous, long events with families drawn close together for conversation. The typical French meal offers three to four courses which includes cheese before dessert. All meals are accompanied by freshly baked breads and wine. Popular foods in France include chicken in a red wine sauce, known as Coq au vin and sea scallops cooked in butter, or Coquilles Saint-Jacques. The food that is actually on the menu can also be quite diverse and vary according to the region of the country in which you are located.

People in France are courteous and very formal. People in the country are also known for being chic, taking great pride in their personal appearance and clothing. Some countries view France as an arrogant country because of these characteristics, although those in the country attribute this to simply being fashionable and cautious of the appearance.

There are 22 official regions located in the country of France. Each of these regions are subdivided into departments.

Brittany and Normandy lie on the far northwest corner of France. This region is distinct, with a jagged coastline of wide bays and granite cliffs. Those who reside in this region consider themselves separated from the rest of France. The dialect is Breton, and you will find Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy also within this region. The countryside in this region is simply amazing, and those visiting will find mile after mile of unspoilt countryside. Rain is common in this region, with cooler weather in the winter months and a variable climate throughout the year.

To the southern border of Brittany and Lower Normandy you will find Pays-de la Loire. This region is spectacular and lush with amazing scenery, including the dramatic Atlantic coast where delightful beaches and waters can be found. The climate in this region offers the best of temperatures, with warm summers and mild winters.

The southern region of France is a popular area. It is extremely busy and one of the most expensive regions in the country. It is also hot. Despite these things visitors come from far and wide to enjoy the scenery that is offered in the region. Lavender fields are popular throughout the southern region.

The Rhone-Alpes, sits to the north of the Mediterranean coast. It is home to the French Alps which everyone knows is a popular area for tourists as well as locals. The area is filled with dazzling resorts available throughout the year and those in the region can take advantage of any number of activities with skiing ranking as a particular favourite. Mountains are plentiful in the region, just as they are in The Pyrenees in the southwest.

The centre of France is truly where the heart lies. It is a peaceful, quite region. Auvergne is located in the heart of France, and still remains one of the least densely populated areas of the country. There are no coasts or national borders found in the areas in the heart of France. Limousin, Burgundy, the Central Loire Valley all are located here. Many lakes exist throughout these areas, making it a prime area for those who enjoy fishing. Those who like to sip a great glass of wine can also come to this region. Burgundy is a paradise for those who love wine as well as delectable food.

In the eastern region of France you will find the areas that border Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg. The Franche-Comte is here, characterized by an amazing landscape of woods and rivers. Those who enjoy the great outdoors are certain to enjoy this region. There is a strong German influence in this region, which is prominent in the dialect, the cuisine and the architecture. It is a region that is peaceful and filled with beautiful small towns, rolling vineyards and more. Ardennes is in the region, and a hilly area with forests and waters to the south. It is here that champagne is created. In this region the temperatures are generally cooler in the winter. The locals are affluent, as this is the main gateway into Europe.

Northern France is home to Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Dunkerque and Boulogne. The close proximity to Belgium has a heavy influence on the region. Here you will find windmills and canals covering large expanses of land. The local cuisine is an attractive part of the region, just as the world-renowned beer festivals that take place. The region is also rich in history. The First World War battlefields can be found in the area, which reveal a look at the horrors of times past. Picardy is also located in this part of France. The climate within this region resembles that of the UK and Paris.

And then there is Paris. You cannot talk about France without first talking about Paris, the capital of the country. Paris has it all, and it is one of the most majestic capital cities in the entire world. The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, as well as The Louvre. Paris exemplifies wealth and design, therefore the region is very expensive. There are endless cultural attractions found in Paris.

As you can see there is something to love throughout the country of France. It is truly the place to be no matter who you are. Men and women, teens and children of all ages enjoy coming to France and experiencing things that can be found nowhere else in the world. Whether you are looking for mountains, lakes, history, sandy beaches or something else, France certainly has something to offer to everyone.

• More than 60 million people reside in the country
• French and English are the two most commonly spoken languages in the country
• France uses EUROs. You will need to exchange any money that you choose to bring with you from another country into EUROs before or after you arrive in the country.

While France was once a largely agricultural state, things have changed since World War II and now there are many different industries that France is competent in. Around 35% of all of the land in France is occupied by orchards and vineyards. France leads the way in wine production as well. Forestry and fishing also rank highly as notable industries in the country, although this varies according to the location of France that you are in.  Other notable interests in the country include iron and coal, as well as transportation of equipment and machinery. As you may imagine, tourism accounts for a very large proportion of the economy in France.

France is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, bringing tens-of-millions of visitors each and every year. While most people come to experience the fabulousness of Paris, there are many other cities in the country that also offer a delight to those who visit. Arriving in Paris provides the chance to experience so very much. It is said that Paris is the city of love, and you can expect romance and love to always be in the air when you are in Paris. France is the most visited country in the world each year and those who choose to visit the country will certainly leave and head back home with a fond appreciation of the nation.

Another important fact about France is that it is high on the list of best places in the world to attend university. Individuals of all ages can attend any of the fabulous colleges and universities in the country and expect to earn a great education. France is home to some of the best universities in the world, and the country leads the way in a number of industries. When it is a wonderful education that is desired, it is France that more people look to. There are so many reasons why people choose France, with the outstanding educational opportunities being the biggest. But, a cheaper cost of living, the area and other factors also influence the decision of people to attend a university in France.

France is rich in history and culture. You can find people from all backgrounds and heritages in the country. The food in France is another benefit of being in the country. People in France are exquisite in every aspect of their life. This includes in the dishes that they prepare. La France France is the largest country in western Europe with a population of approximately 56 million people. It is bordered by both the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

La France France is roughly hexagonal – it has six sides. It is bordered by Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Luxemburg, and Belgium. France is divided into regions and then departments; there are 96 in France and 4 overseas.

Money Until 2002, France’s currency was the French Franc. French francs comprised 100 centimes, much the same as our pounds and pence. Now all financial transactions and purchases are made using Euros. One Euro comprises 100 cents. Weights and measures in France are metric so meat and vegetables are sold in kilos and grammes.

Mountains & Rivers • The highest mountain is Mont Blanc which is 4,807 metres and is in "les Alpes". Other mountains are les Pyrénées, le Jura and le Massif Central. • The longest River is La Loire 1,020 km. Other rivers are La Seine, Le Rhône, La Garonne, and La Dordogne.

Famous Landmarks • The capital city is Paris. Other important towns include Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux and Strasbourg. • Symbols such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Latin Quarter, Montmartre, and the Georges Pompidou Center make Paris one of the most visited places in the world. • The Eiffel Tower is probably one of the most famous symbols of France. It was built in 1889 for an exhibition. The tower was thought to be only a temporary structure, although it still stands today.

Food • France is known for its fine food. French cooking is thought to be the best in the world. Chefs prepare dishes such as quiche, soufflés, mousse, pâté, croissants, crêpes, and French bread. Many people in France like to drink their hot chocolate from bowls and dip their bread into it. • More than 350 kinds of cheese are made in France.

Goods • France is famous for cheese (Camembert, Brie, Roquefort) wine, perfume (Chanel, Dior, Givenchy) and cars (Renault, Citroen, Peugeot). • An ‘F’ on the back of a car denotes that it is from France. • French drivers drive on the right.

La Tour de France Every summer more than 100 professional cyclists race in the Tour de France. The race is approximately 2,000 miles long. The race lasts up to three weeks and is held in July. The route changes from year to year.

Weather • France generally has cool winters and mild summers. However, along the Mediterranean they have hot summers. • The north has cool weather. In the south it gets very hot in summer. Fruits such as oranges and lemons grow in the south.

Special Days Avril - 1 “Poisson d’Avril” - people cut out paper fish and put them on the backs of unsuspecting victims. You’re an April fish, not an April fool in France! Juillet - 14 “La Fête National”. In 1789 the storming of the Bastille prison marked the beginning of the French Revolution. France is a Republic; that means they do not have a King or Queen, and they are very proud of the fact. They executed their Royal family and today they have a president as Head of State who is elected every five years. “Bastille” day, as it is also known, is a holiday and celebrated with fireworks in the evening and dancing in the streets. Fête - Bonne fête!Many people are named after saints. Each saint has a special day and people often get sent cards on that day if they are named after a saint; for example, St Stephen's Day is 26 December. In the Christmas carol, Good King Wenceslas, the king goes out “on the feast of Stephen”.

Famous French People • Louis Pasteur. He discovered bacteria and as a result of his work we ‘pasteurise’ food to make it fit to eat. He also worked on vaccines for different diseases and was one of the greatest scientists of the nineteenth century. • Louis Braille (1809-1852) He invented the system of raised dots (Braille) which form letters for the visually impaired to read. • Claude Monet (1840-1926) The leading member of the Impressionist painters. His most famous painting is the "Water-lilies" which he painted in the elaborate garden he had made for himself.

It's time to partyyyy! 🕺

To mark the end of the Paralympic Games, the Stade de France has become the stage for the Journey of the Wave, an odyssey designed by Victor le Masne. Like the musical wave, electronic music is constantly changing and feeding off the different scenes that make it up. Like the Relay of the Paralympic Flame, the wave passes from one artist to another, uniting this group in a collective harmony. To embody this journey, Victor le Masne and Romain Pissenem called on 24 electronic artists from the French electronic scene.

At Jardin des Tuileries, gathered around the Cauldron, Amadou and Mariam, accompanied by a string quartet, perform 'Je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais', a composition by Serge Gainsbourg inspired by the French poet Paul Verlaine. In an intimate and poignant atmosphere, this performance expresses, with its poetic elegance, what we are all feeling as the Games of Paris 2024 draw to a close.

As for the Paris Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, LA promises to be a great venue for 2028

Violinist and Broadway composer Gaelynn Lea and  rapper, songwriter and athlete Garnet Silver-Hall, perform an original piece of poetry linking our themes of dreaming, disability, and community.

The American National Anthem 🇺🇸

This handover sequence continues with the American National Anthem, which accompanies the raising of the American flag. This is followed by the Los Angeles 2028 artistic sequence.

The Paralympic flag leaves Paris 😢

The Paralympic Anthem is played and the Paralympic flag is lowered by officers of the French Army. The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, join Andrew Parsons and Tony Estanguet on the centre stage. The Mayor of Paris hands over the Paralympic flag to the IPC President, who passes it on to the Mayor of Los Angeles.

Breaking, a new sport added at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Paris 2024 had chosen to add Breaking as an additionnal olympic sport, with a great success as it set La Concorde urban park alight. Samuka, Angelina and Perninha performed during the Paralympic Opening Ceremony, while Haiper performed during the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Breaking enters the stage

This Closing Ceremony is an opportunity to highlight this modern dance and its power of inclusion. In this sequence, eight dancers, some of them with disabilities, celebrate the diversity of breaking with solo or group performances, in a spirit of “demonstration” and celebration, to the sound of Cut Killer’s set.

The protocol sequence continues with a tribute to all the Paris 2024 volunteers. The 2,000 of them at the centre of the stadium are cheered by the crowd, to the sound of Johnny Hallyday's iconic song 'Que je t'aime'. Through their energy, commitment and good humour, the volunteers of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games contributed to the success of the event.

The Ceremony continues with the presentation of the six newly elected - with two already there before - members of the International Paralympic Committee Athletes' Council. These members, elected by their peers during the Paralympic Games, take to the centre stage.

The IPC Athletes' Council is a group of athlete representatives elected by their peers who are the voice of the Paralympic athlete community to the IPC.

When you meet French speakers , you need to know how to introduce yourself and what to say when you are introduced. French can be a bit tricky when introducing yourself or others depending on whether you know the person to whom you are making the introduction(s) or even if you have had any contact with the person. In French, those circumstances all require different introductions.

Basic Introductions

French uses the verb  se présenter, not  introduire,  meaning to introduce something into something else, which translates into English as "to insert." The most basic introduction in French, then, would be:

• Je me présente. = Let me introduce myself.

Using s’appeler is the common way of introducing yourself in French. Don’t think of it as “to name oneself” because it will only confuse you. Think of it in the context of introducing your name to someone, and link the French words to that context instead of applying a literal translation, as in:

• Je m​'appelle ... = My name is...

Use je suis with people who already know your name, such as those you have already talked to on the phone or by mail but never met in person, as in:

• Je suis... =  I am...

If you don't know the person or have never spoken to him on the phone or contacted him by email or mail, use  je m’appelle,  as noted previously.

Introducing by Name

There are also distinctions between formal and informal introductions, as well as singular versus plural introductions, as noted in the tables in this and the subsequent section.

Meeting People

In French, when you are meeting people , you have to be careful about using the correct gender , as well as whether the introduction is formal or informal, as in these examples.

French Names

Nicknames — or  un surnom in French — are much less common in this Romance language than in American English, but they are not unheard of. Often, a longer first name will be shortened, such as  Caro  for Caroline or  Flo  for Florence. 

Cheek Kissing and Other Greetings

Cheek kissing  is certainly an accepted form of greeting in France, but there are strict (unwritten) social rules to follow. Cheek kissing is generally OK, for example, but not hugging. So, it's important to learn not only the words that go with cheek kissing — such as  bonjour  (hello) — but also the social norms that are expected when greeting someone in this manner. There are also other ways to say " hello " and ask " How are you? " in French.

Ce dimanche 8 septembre 2024, Cyril Féraud a présenté sa dernière émission de Slam . Pour l'occasion, celui qui s'apprête à reprendre les commandes de Tout le monde veut prendre sa place a tenté de remplir la dernière grille du jeu.

"Je t’aime mon Slam". Tels ont été les derniers mots de Cyril Féraud à la présentation du jeu Slam , sur France 3 . Ce dimanche 8 septembre 2024, le présentateur vedette de France Télévisions a orchestré sa dernière émission, avant de laisser la place à Théo Curin . Alors que le sportif handisport récupère les commandes du jeu, Cyril Féraud obtient quant à lui la présentation du jeu du midi de France 2 , Tout le monde veut prendre sa place .

Cyril Féraud était aux manettes de Slam depuis le 26 octobre 2009. C’est d’ailleurs sur ces images d’archives que l’émission du dimanche 8 septembre 2024 s’est ouverte. Une édition particulière puisque le jeune papa a convié les anciens grands gagnants du jeu, mais aussi la direction de France Télévisions. Une page se tourne, c’est certain ! Parmi les candidats, il y avait même les équipes de la production pour les remercier de la longévité du jeu de France 3 . Il faut dire qu’en 16 ans, Cyril Féraud a accueilli sur son plateau de nombreux candidats.

De l'animateur au candidat

Moment émouvant, Cyril Féraud a reçu au début de l’émission, un appel de sa maman. "Je viens te faire de gros bisous, je suis fier de toi. Je te souhaite une bonne continuation et bon courage à toi pour ta nouvelle aventure professionnelle", lui a-t-elle dit. "Merci ma maman d’amour," a laissé échapper le présentateur, avant d’avoir une pensée pour son papa , "qui me protège de là où il est maintenant" . Toujours est-il que pour marquer sa dernière émission, le présentateur à lui-même joué la finale.

Les rôles s’inversent ! Juste avant la finale, Cyril Féraud a convié Amaury, le chauffeur de salle, à le rejoindre sur le plateau. Ce dernier a ainsi présenté la dernière séquence du jeu... pendant que le présentateur s'est mis dans la peau d'un candidat. Objectif : trouver la dernière grille, avec pour thème, Tout le monde veut prendre sa place . Et ça a été un sans-faute pour Cyril Féraud ! Quant aux gains, ils ont été reversés à l’association Les lutins du Pheonix. "C’était une magnifique dernière. Je vous aime très très fort" , a-t-il scandé à la fin de l’émission. Dès le lundi 9 septembre 2024, le jeune papa sera à retrouver à midi sur France 2 .

Passionné par l’audiovisuel, je reste persuadé que la petite lucarne a encore de beaux jours devant elle. Adepte de séries, et parce qu’il faut vivre avec son temps, je collectionne les abonnements des plateformes de streaming. Curieux de tout, tout le temps.

Ravahere Silloux, Miss Tahiti 2023 : nouveau visage à la présentation de Patitifa

Ravahere Silloux incarne parfaitement la détermination qui l’a menée à être élue Miss Tahiti 2023. En se lançant dans la présentation de Patitifa, elle montre une fois de plus que pour ceux qui le veulent vraiment, rien n'est impossible. Déjà à l'aise devant les caméras grâce à son expérience de Miss, elle a su convaincre les téléspectateurs de Polynésie La 1ère en apportant sa touche personnelle à l'émission documentaire.

Un nouveau défi pour Miss Tahiti 2023

L’idée de devenir présentatrice lui est venue il y a quelques mois. Passionnée et ambitieuse, Ravahere a exprimé ce désir lors d'une discussion avec Madame Tepiu Bambridge, directrice éditoriale de la chaîne. À ce moment-là, *Patitifa* cherchait un nouveau visage. Grâce à son aisance naturelle devant la caméra, sa curiosité, et sa détermination, elle s'est rapidement imposée comme la candidate idéale.

Une préparation méticuleuse

Ravahere Silloux prend son nouveau rôle très à cœur. Autonome et impliquée, elle écrit elle-même ses textes et effectue ses propres recherches pour s'assurer que chaque émission soit à la hauteur des attentes des téléspectateurs. Pourtant, elle reste humble face à ce nouveau défi. Lors d’une interview dans l'émission Fare Ma'ohi, elle a confié qu'elle doit encore se perfectionner, car la présentation est un exercice différent de ce qu'elle a connu jusque-là. Cette quête constante d'amélioration est sans doute l'une des clés de sa réussite.
