The first rain of monsoon.

Monsoons were on time this year. They reached Delhi at the end of June. One day suddenly the sky became overcast. It was very hot and sultry. Heavy, dark clouds full of rain rolled majestically across the sky. Then with any preamble heavy drops began to fall on the earth. The raindrops felt cool on the hot skin. Gradually the tempo of the wind started to build up. After half an hour the gentle wind had changed into violent blasts. The trees and plants started swaying with the power of the wind. Meanwhile, the slight drizzle of the rain had transformed itself into a heavy downpour. The roads became a vast expanse of water. The traffic on the roads came to a standstill. No one could see anything because of the heavy curtain of rain. The sewers and drains began to overflow. They were unable to cope up with the sudden lashings of rain. People tried to find shelters under the trees and verandas. Soon the whole city appeared to be swimming in a big lake of water. D.E.S.U. cut the power supply and the whole Delhi plunged into darkness. This was done to avoid deaths and fires due to electrocution and short-circuiting of electrical wires. Many cars and scooters could be seen submerged in water. The breaking of the monsoon over Delhi had brought with it a nightmare.

India is known for its rainy season. The major portion of our country falls in the tropical region. It means that we enjoy a tropical season where the southwest winds carry down clouds from June till September. Torrential rain occurs in this season in my city. This season behaves differently in different locations in India. Rajasthan gets the least rain whereas Meghalaya receives the highest rain every year. It all depends on the topography of our country.

The Himalayan Ranges stop the moisture-containing winds and transform them into clouds. These clouds then travel down to the northeastern states to shower their blessings. Monsoon winds from the oceans reach different states and shed loads of water as rain on the other states.

We enjoy our rainy season for 3 to 4 months every year. Heavy clouds are formed in the sky when the southwest monsoon winds invade with a lot of moisture from the sea. By losing temperature, these clouds start getting heavier. Once the motion of the clouds slows down due to increased weight, raindrops form, and shower from the sky. The cool breeze and rain make our atmosphere quite enjoyable.

Dark clouds and lightning are the symbols of heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms are also quite common in India. Due to our diverse landforms and huge area, the behaviour of the rainy season is also diverse. We have learned how to harvest rainwater and tackle droughts. Villages and cities are also learning how to harvest it and recycle it for future use and to naturally increase the level of the water table in the earth.

In our villages, farmers start working on the fields before the rainy season hits. Using the natural water supply, the farmers irrigate their lands and grow various crops relevant to this season. Rain fills our ponds, rivers, and streams. It also gets settled down and increases the freshwater reserve underground. This freshwater reserve is then used as a drinking and irrigation source for the rest of the year. My city turns out quite beautiful and soothing. After the hot gloomy days of summer, the rainy season hits and removes the dusty look of my city. The trees seem very happy when their leaves are washed clean. The environment becomes greener and pleasant. Excessive rainfall also causes water logging. A warm shower: People are advised to take a warm shower if they are drenched. This will help their bodies to get stabilized and return to the normal temperature. Also, they should use hot water for bathing as the temperature is very low during the monsoons.

Basic safety: Children or adults who are doing outdoor activities like swimming should go inside the campus if they hear any thunder and even if it has not started raining yet. They should avoid open areas like playgrounds and metal objects like light poles when they hear thunder.

Avoid stagnant water: Stagnant water is a breeding place for mosquitoes that spreads diseases like malaria and dengue. To avoid this situation, people should regularly empty the still water sources like pet water bowls, planters trays and plates and inflatable pools around the homes.

Keep away from floodwaters: Wading in flood water, especially barefoot, is a fun activity for kids. Children should not go in floodwater as they might get infected by a bacterial disease called leptospirosis. Cleanliness is important: During the rainy season, people catch a common cold. They should always sanitize their hand before doing any work or eating. People should always wash their hands and feet when they come home, especially after getting in contact with floodwater.

Two third of our planet earth is covered with water in the form of oceans, seas, rivers and water bodies. We call our planet as ‘mother earth’ because millions of life forms mushroom in every nook and corner. The birds, animals, insects, marine life, trees, plants etc all depend on water for survival.

In our scriptures and mythology great importance has been attached to rivers. All our major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, and Brahamputra are considered sacred and are worshipped in many parts of our country.

The rain is worshiped as god Indra. The rainbow which appears during rainy season is called Indra Dhanush. Our forefathers knew the value of water and wanted us to recognize this fact.

Among four seasons of the year, people await the onset of rainy season with great expectation. India is an agricultural state and in many states the farmers depend on rain for their crops. Even the economy of our country is largely dependent on good monsoon season.

We have recently faced many problems due to low rainfall, like the unavailability of vegetables, which lead to recession in the prices, e.g. The onion prices had skyrocketed, which lead to mass discomfort, confusion and became the bud of several jokes.

We need to obtain the right amount of rain, since too much or too little rain can have adverse and harmful effects on human life. We have seen the destruction caused due to excess rains, many a times.

The July 27 floods, Chennai floods and the Kaidarnath incident have been pivotal in demonstrating the destructive nature of rains. It not only causes loss of property and life, but also ruins crops and the fields, causing future hazards like famines.

In the areas of Rajasthan, there’s barely enough rainfall, as people over there struggle with life without adequate water. We’ve been made aware of the climatic changes that is occurring. Global warming is in the rise. Deforestation has become uncontrollable. Factories and industries are contributing to air pollution on a global scale.

All these factors are having a direct effect on the amount of rainfall we get. People have realized this, and have started various movements to better the situation.

Tree plantation drives, rigid and strict regulations on factory emissions, promotion of more environment friendly products etc. are being carried out.

Governments have been working of rain cloud seed projects to artificially induce rainfall. But that brings us to the question, are we really ready to control weather? It’s a matter to think about.

A Summary and Analysis of Ray Bradbury’s ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’

‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ is, like many stories Ray Bradbury (1920-2012) wrote in the early 1950s, haunted by the fear of nuclear war. Sometimes known by the slightly longer title, ‘August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains’, the story appeared in Bradbury’s 1951 collection The Martian Chronicles and remains one of his best-known and most widely studied short stories.

The story is set in a house in 2026, when nuclear war has annihilated human life. However, the technological devices in the house, such as the mechanical clock and dishwasher, continue to perform their daily automated duties, until they, too, are overwhelmed and destroyed by the forces of nature.

‘There Will Come Soft Rains’: plot summary

The setting of the story is a house in the year 2026. A clock announces the date, August 4, 2026, and tells the members of the house that it is time to wake up. However, there are no signs of human activity, or even habitation, within the house.

The various contraptions in the house continue to prepare everything for the day, but the humans these machines are designed to ‘serve’ don’t show up. Machines in the kitchen prepare eggs and toast for breakfast, but the food goes untouched, and is poured down a waste-disposal unit, with the dirty plates being washed by an automated washer. Tiny robotic mice appear out of the wall and clean the house.

At noon, the family dog returns and the automated front door recognises the sound of its whine and opens to let it inside. It is shivering, emaciated, and covered in sores: although it’s not stated, it’s implied that this is a result of the nuclear attack which killed the dog’s owners. The dog traipses mud into the house, and the robotic mice promptly clean up after him. The debris is then deposited in an incinerator which the narrator likens to ‘evil Baal’, a ‘false god’ from the Bible.

In the afternoon, the automated devices in the house continue to prepare things for its owners, but there are still no humans in sight: the cards laid out for a game remain untouched and are cleared away. A robotic voice reads a poem chosen at random (something it does every day for the mother of the family): today, the poem is Sara Teasdale’s ‘ There Will Come Soft Rains ’, a poem about ‘wartime’ which describes what the world would be like if ‘mankind perished utterly’: in summary, nature would not care and the world would carry on.

Next, a wind gets up and causes a fire in the house. The house responds by turning on water sprinklers to douse the fire, but this fails to put the fire out. The house is destroyed and the technology in it fails, with only the mechanical voice which opened the story ‘surviving’ to announce, the next morning, the new date of August 5, 2026, over and over again.

‘There Will Come Soft Rains’: analysis

‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ takes its title from Teasdale’s poem, which was written during the First World War of 1914-18: the first mass industrial war. By 1951, when Bradbury borrowed Teasdale’s title for his story, technology had made war on an even vaster and more destructive scale possible, as the bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had shown in 1945.

This is the main theme of Bradbury’s story: nuclear annihilation. But there are several grim ironies which Bradbury explores and reveals in ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’. First, the technology in the story, all of the robotic mice and mechanical labour-saving devices, are part and parcel will the technological and scientific ‘progress’ which led to the development of the atomic bomb. Bradbury is inviting us to ask whether technological progress is in itself a good thing: instead, much comes down to how it is used by humans.

Second, the technological aids which fill the house were powerless to protect the house’s inhabitants from a horrible death in the nuclear blast. The robotic mice may continue to clean and the clock persist in announcing the date and time, but this is just a reminder of the emptiness which otherwise fills the house which was designed for human habitation.

This makes all of these technological developments almost laughably pathetic when some other scientific breakthrough – nuclear fission – can make it possible for humans to wipe each other from the face of the earth. Having a mechanised voice read you a poem every evening is a small consolation for the prospect of a nuclear winter.

Finally, and perhaps most poetically of all, there is the dark irony which Bradbury took from Teasdale’s poem, ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’. Even the most powerful man-made device of them all, the atom bomb, is dwarfed by the hardy persistence of nature. All it takes is a gust of wind to start a fire, and these two natural phenomena succeed in wiping out all of the remaining technology with the (again, almost grimly comical) voice of the mechanical clock announcing the new day.

With this in mind, Bradbury’s story might be productively compared – in a sort of comparative analysis – with the Wallace Stevens poem, ‘ A Postcard from the Volcano ’, which was published fifteen years before Bradbury’s story but which also offers a post-apocalyptic landscape (specifically, one written, like Bradbury’s from an American perspective) in which mankind has been forgotten and nature goes on.

It’s worth remembering that the United States of the 1950s was, for many, a time of great optimism: America had helped the Allies to win the war in 1945, and, particularly for middle-class America, this was an era of great hope and prosperity.

But it was also a time when the Cold War between the US and the USSR was starting to worry the authorities: the 1950s was the decade of Senator McCarthy ’s anti-Communist witch hunts, and Americans were only too aware that their victory in the recent world war had largely been made possible by unleashing a dangerous new weapon upon their enemies. What would happen if the Soviet Union developed, and then launched, atomic bombs on America?

Of course, in an era in which our houses are filled with voice-activated technology, security cameras, electric dishwashers, broadband, and the rest of it (and living, lest we forget, in an age dangerously close to the year in which Bradbury’s story is set, 2026), Bradbury’s vision of a home dominated by such technology has largely come true. It was the architect Le Corbusier who declared that a house is ‘a machine for living in’, but in Bradbury’s story the machine has been stripped of its life.

All of the technology mimics human activity in some way: the clock mimics human speech, and the mechanical mice (almost like something out of a fairy tale or Tchaikovsky ballet) mimic human cleaners.

Bradbury also uses a number of similes and metaphors which describe the house as a human body of sorts: he describes the house as having a ‘paranoia’ which is ‘old-maidenly’ in its nature, and he refers to the ‘nerves’, ‘veins’, and ‘capillaries’ of the house, as if it were a vast living organism itself.

The irony should not be lost on us: the simile is there to point up the ironic distance between the technological house and the recently destroyed humans for whom it was built. However, what does unite the house with its former occupants is that both will ultimately be destroyed by forces greater than themselves.

Bradbury’s reference to the incinerator, which he likens, in another simile, to ‘evil Baal’, is also revealing on several levels. The vent of the contraption is described as ‘sighing’: yet another sign of the house’s imitation of human behaviour. But Baal was a false god worshipped by people in the Old Testament. Bradbury’s point is obvious: like Baal, this incinerator – and, by extension, all technology – is a false god or idol which we worship at our peril.

The fact that the machine so described is an incinerator, something which destroys things by fire, both looks back to the nuclear fire which destroyed the family of the house but also prefigures the burning up of the house in the conflagration at the end of the story.

If we recall that Baal also features as a character in Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667), in which he is a close associate of Satan in (fiery) hell, we realise that, whilst Bradbury’s story is not overtly religious, he is drawing on such Christian associations in order to suggest the hell, not just of nuclear war, but also a world overly reliant on technology at the cost of human life.

The climate of India is known famously as the Indian monsoon climate. The Arabic term Mausam means season. India is the only country that experiences a whole season of rainfall.

It is both unique and beautiful since India does not have an equal distribution of rainfall throughout the year. Some places receive extremely heavy rainfall, while others have scanty rain. Coastal India receives it twice a year. Rainfall is the strength behind the agricultural background of India. Disbalance in the rain cycle causes huge trouble in the country as well.

The rainy season can be called a weather condition in greater parts of the earth, while in India, it is a complete season. Rainfall is not just a thundershower in India but occupies a significant position for more than three months. India is the only country whose agriculture happens due to rainfall. Any disruption in the arrival and departure of rain can create both floods and drought throughout the country.

The climate of India is specifically known as the Indian monsoon climate. The Arabic term Mausam is used to cite the term monsoon. Thus it is clear that the rainy season is a characteristic feature of this country. On average, the plains receive greater rainfall and the hilly regions experience rain in form of snow drizzle. Several parts of the world also enjoy rain in this manner. It happens in India from June to September till autumn arrives.

It cools down the excessively high temperature of the summer and brings new life to planets, animals, and humans. New green leaves grow during this time. Children love floating paper boats in the water. But simultaneously it is a season of many water-borne diseases, which must be avoided with caution. Else rainy season is a gift of nature and a supporter of the life cycle in the world.

Different seasons are responsible for the specific type of cultivation, crops, human habitation, birds and animals, and also the flora. The weather condition also influences the economy of a specific place. Thus rainy season as a particular season character on earth has its own influences. It is both enjoyable and also a disaster when uncontrollable. It can create as well as destroy life. So it is unique in several respects.

Generally, the cycle of seasons is divided into four major divisions. Those are summer, winter, spring, and autumn. The rainy season is not specifically a global phenomenon on earth and hence it is not generally included in the cycle of seasons. If one has to understand the pattern of the rainy season then the ideal country is India.

The Indian climate is named the Indian monsoon climate. The term monsoon has been derived from the word Mausam meaning season. So the characteristic feature of India goes with rainfall. Rain influences the agriculture, vegetation, culture, economy, and distribution of the population in India. If there is any disturbance in the arrival or departure of rainfall, then it can cause severe flooding and drought.

Rainfall in India generally arrives between June and September and it provides enough water for irrigation. Presently rainwater is collected for rainwater harvesting and also to reduce wastage of water and drought in several places of India. India is an agricultural country and a greater part of the economy of India depends on agriculture. So in turn, agriculture is dependent on rainfall.

The distribution of rainfall during the rainy season is diverse in India. Countries like Cherrapunji receive high amounts of rainfall whereas places like Shillong Rajasthan Gujarat and parts of Western India receive extremely low amounts of rainfall. So deserts are abundant there. The rainy season does not necessarily invite any festival; however, Rath Yatra is one of the most prominent festivals in India celebrated during this time. Nature is beautifully decorated during the rainy season and new leaves fill up the trees.

Children enjoy the rainy season by floating paper boats and women cook hot and delicious meals during the rainy afternoon and night. However, this season is also noted for several diseases it carries with it like diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, malaria, and others. These diseases are fatal and can cause severe damage to human health. Is always advisable to be prepared before the rainy season. And if all these are maintained properly rainfall is definitely a time of enjoyment after the hot and dry summer season.

I live in India, and my country is known for its rainy season as my country is located in the equatorial region, because of that, many portions of the country come under the tropical region. The rainy season is one of the seasons of the weather and ecosystem. In India, we have seen and heard many times in the weather forecasting news channels that some of the states hold less record of rain while other states hold a maximum record of rainfall during the rainy seasons. This is because of the topographical changes in the country.

The Himalayan Ranges on the northern side hold the wind of moisture content and transform it into clouds which then travel downwards and start raining. The moisturized wind, which is also called monsoon winds, comes from the different parts of the ocean and spreads its blessings in the form of rain in different countries. The tenure of the rainy season is around 3 to 4 months in India every year, mostly in the months from July to October. During this phase, the rainy clouds forms because of the moisture winds come from the oceans and seas, and by losing the temperature, it gets heavier and once stopped because of the heavier weight, the clouds turns into raindrops and starts showering from the sky and makes everyone happy, which is quite enjoyable in the cool breeze atmosphere.

The thunderstorms generate when two big solid clouds collide in the sky, which is quite common in India. The heavy rainfall gives the intention of dark clouds and lightning. In many of the cities in India, the rainwater harvesting system is also installed to overcome the problem of droughts. This process helps in increasing the water level of the ground and gives relief to many people in the summers. Many farmers start working and plowing on their farmlands and take the benefit of the rain and irrigate their land naturally, which then becomes a good source of water supply. The lakes, rivers, ponds, and other water bodies get filled and look beautiful. The rainfall cleans the environment, houses, vehicles, trees, and the dusty leaves from the dust and turns the surroundings beautiful and soothing. The rainy season cleans the environment and ecosystem from pollution. It is also called the green season because the rain, grasses, and other herbs and shrubs start growing everywhere. The rainy season is no less than a great gift of God to mankind.

It was mid-July. There had been no rains for several months at a stretch. It was unbearably hot. All the pools and ponds had run dry. The sun shone brightly from the leaden sky. The earth was parched and dry. The cattle were dying in a large number.

People and herds of cattle with their tongues lolling out, took rest in the shade of trees. Birds fluttered about helplessly in search of water, but alas! not a drop of water was to be found anywhere. It was feared that a famine would break out if there were no rains in the near future. People offered prayers and performed ‘Yajnas’ to propitiate the angry gods to send the rains.

At last their prayers were heard. On the 20th of July, a piece of cloud made its appearance on the horizon. It grew bigger and bigger.

Soon the whole sky was completely overcast. Dark, fleecy clouds began to sail in the sky. It was a sight to see. A cool, life-giving breeze began to blow. It began to drizzle. The drizzle soon changed, into a heavy downpour.

There was a fall in the temperature. The weather became cool and pleasant. The trees were washed neat and clean. They looked fresh and green. All dust settled down. It was a happy break in the long spell of the hot and dry weather.

All young and old enjoyed mango parties. Ladies prepared dainty dishes to celebrate the rainy day. The people went out into the open fields to enjoy the beautiful scenes of the cool breeze. The farmers seemed to be happy. Their fields were watered by the beneficent Nature. They entertained hopes of bumper crops. The cattle expected plenty of luscious grass to feed on.

A rainbow appeared in the sky. The peacocks danced. The frogs croaked and the lambs bleated out of joy.

WRITING THE ESSAY

INTRODUCTION

You can begin the essay in a number of ways—with an anecdote, a memory, a fact, an observation, a quote, an idea, or a question.
Your audience is your Faculty Advisor and the Provost and Dean’s office, so the tone can be academic and personal.
You can organize your reflection in several ways: by answering each of the prompts in the Dean’s letter; by discussing your work thematically; by Capacity (engage, inquire, communicate, research, create), or by writing about courses, co-curricular work, and your FWT experience separately.
Do you have a main interest, question, or idea? For example: “My work at Bennington so far has focused on biology, but I’m also drawn to contemporary photography and its representations of the body.” A focus may emerge from a question, a problem, or an enthusiasm, but it’s not necessary at this point!

BODY PARAGRAPHS

The body paragraphs are a great place for you to add the 2-6 links to your work. You could link to essays, projects, artworks, videos, collaborations, homework, notes, etc.
Try to address each of the questions in the Dean’s letter. Most importantly, include specifics for each answer: quotes from texts you read; ideas, images, or facts; anecdotes from class discussion; details and evidence from your projects, research, or creations. Communicate to the reader a vivid picture of what your first term and FWT experiences have been like for you.
You can address any of these things: what you have discovered, created, and accomplished so far; the inquiries you have made and the challenges you have encountered; which skills you want to develop; what you wish to learn more about or research; what risks you have taken; what you want to make, test, examine; what you want to engage with more deeply; and, how your Field Work Term and co-curricular work connect to your studies.

CONCLUSION

• What else do you want to add to reflect upon your experiences thus far? What are you proud of? What personal or academic goals do you have?
• Which classes do you want to pursue in the coming years at Bennington? Are there faculty you want to work with next year?
• How can you end on a powerful note? As in your introduction, you might include an anecdote, a memory, a fact, an observation, a quote, an idea, or a question.

WRITING TIPS

The essay should be 3-5 pages long; it should be double-spaced and include a header with your name, advisor, and a title. It should include 2-6 links to samples of your work.
Make time to write a first draft. Often you will discover your best idea at the end of the first draft. Take that idea or argument, and put it in the first paragraph of your next draft. Then, take time to edit and proofread.

The providence area has already had 23.85 inches of rain this year, second only to the first three months of 2010.

PROVIDENCE − The Providence area just had its second-rainiest first quarter of a year on record, according to National Weather Service records.

The Providence area had 23.85 inches of rain in the first three months of the year, second only to the 24.18 inches that fell from January through March in 2010, a year that brought widespread flooding to the Ocean State. The records go back to 1905.

The 2024 rain totals were driven by March, which had 12.05 inches, and January, which had 9.33 inches. March of this year was second only to March of 2010, which had 16.34 inches. January was second to January of 1979, which had 11.66 inches.

February was drier than normal, with just 2.47 inches of rain. Normal rainfall for the month is 3.44 inches.

Meteorologists expect a wet and warm spring

March marked the first month of meteorological spring, and it was both wetter and warmer than normal, as meteorologists have forecast for the season as a whole.

With an average temperature of 43.2 degrees, March was 4.3 degrees above the normal temperature of 38.9 degrees, according to National Weather Service records. The Providence area has had only 11 warmer months of March since 1905.

It looks like Southern New England will have to wait at least a few more days to put away the umbrellas. The weather service says a storm Wednesday into Thursday has the potential to bring heavy rain, but forecasters are seeing a potential shift of the weather pattern to drier conditions in April.

New L.A. Mansion Tax collects less revenue than expected in 1st year

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- After its first year of existence, Los Angeles' so-called Mansion Tax has collected $215 million to be used for affordable housing projects in the city, well short of the revenue that supporters pitched when it was on the ballot in 2022.

Measure ULA promised voters it would raise between $600 million to $1.1 billion each year by taxing sales of expensive homes. The measure hits properties sold for $5 million or more with an additional 4% tax. Properties sold for $10 million or more have to pay a 5.5% tax.

Voters approved the new tax and it went into effect April 1, 2023.

"Across Los Angeles, more than 11,000 people have benefited from the emergency rental relief that ULA has been able to provide," said LA City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez at a rally Thursday celebrating the tax's one-year anniversary.

But while the Mansion Tax raised $215 million during that time, it is well short of its campaign promises. Supporters attribute the shortcoming to a drop in large home sales caused by rising mortgage rates and construction costs, as well as to property owners who scrambled to sell their expensive homes in the months before the tax kicked in.

"This rush to sell... eliminated $270 million of ULA taxes that would have gone into the pot," said Joan Ling, one of the authors of an economic evaluation of the tax.

That 34-page analysis found Mansion Tax revenues are expected to hit expectations in the upcoming years.

But in addition to recent court challenges, Mansion Tax supporters may also face an election challenge in the form of the Taxpayer Protection Act, which could appear on California ballots in November.

Up to a Trillion Cicadas Are About to Emerge in the U.S.

Two periodical cicada broods are appearing in a 16-state area in the Midwest and Southeast for the first time in centuries. Can you get rid of them? Do they bite you? We answer your questions.

In a rare occurrence, a trillion cicadas from two different broods are expected to begin appearing in the Midwest and Southeast regions of the United States at the end of April.

It’s the first time since 1803 that Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, will appear together in an event known as a dual emergence.

Thomas Jefferson was president the last time that the Northern Illinois Brood’s 17-year cycle aligned with the Great Southern Brood’s 13-year period. After this spring, it’ll be another 221 years before the groups, which are geographically adjacent, appear together again.

A roughly 16-state area will be center stage for these periodical cicadas, which differ from those that appear annually in smaller numbers.

Forested areas, including urban green spaces, are more likely to see higher numbers of cicadas than agricultural regions. To put into perspective just how many of these bugs could emerge, one trillion cicadas, each just over an inch long, would cover 15,782,828 miles if they were placed end to end, said Floyd W. Shockley, an entomologist and collections manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

“That cicada train would reach to the moon and back 33 times,” Dr. Shockley said.

When are the cicadas coming out?

The first cicadas are expected to start emerging in late April. Temperature determines when they come out, said Gene Kritsky, a retired professor of biology at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, and the author of several books on cicadas, including “A Tale of Two Broods.”

Professor Kritsky said that first the soil needs to reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit, about six inches deep, and “then you get a good soaking rain, and that’s when they really pop,” he said.

They’ll use their forelegs to tunnel out from the earth, their beady red eyes looking for a spot where they can peacefully finish maturing. A few days after they emerge and molt, the males will start buzzing in an effort to find a mate, a slow-building crescendo of noise that as a chorus can be louder than a plane .

Where will they be?

The first waves of cicadas will emerge in northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, northern Georgia, and up into western South Carolina, Professor Kritsky said.

Then they’ll surface in central North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and northern Arkansas, followed by southern Missouri, Southern Illinois and western Kentucky . Finally, he said, the cicadas will appear throughout central and northern Missouri and Illinois, northwestern Indiana, southern Wisconsin and eastern Iowa.

How long will the dual emergence last?

The Midwest and Southeast should be buzzing for about six weeks.

In most cases, Dr. Shockley said, the cicadas, which live about a month, will die not far from where they had emerged.

Are cicadas dangerous?

Cicadas don’t bite or sting, nor do they carry any diseases. But since they’re “not great fliers and even worse landers,” cicadas often end up on sidewalks and city streets, where they can be squished by people or cars and “could conceivably make things slick.”

“In urban areas, there will be sufficient numbers to necessitate removal of their bodies,” Dr. Shockley said. “But rather than throwing in the trash or cleaning up with street sweepers, people should consider them basically free fertilizer for the plants in their gardens and natural areas.”

If you have a dog that likes to eat them, it’s not good to let them gorge themselves on the insects because it can lead to intestinal blockage, said Professor Kritsky.

How do I get rid of cicadas?

The short answer is: You don’t. If you have delicate plants that you want to protect, then use special netting created for that purpose.

The bugs are beneficial to the environment, acting as natural tree gardeners. The holes they leave behind when they emerge from the ground help aerate the soil and allow for rainwater to get underground and nourish tree roots in hot summer months. The slits they make in trees can cause some branches to break, and the leaves then turn brown in a process known as “flagging,” which is a kind of natural pruning. When the branch grows again, the fruits it yields will tend to be larger. When they die, the cicadas’ rotting bodies provide nutrients that trees need.

John R. Cooley, a biology professor at the University of Connecticut, said that his best advice for people living in the regions of the dual emergence is to let the bugs be.

“The forest is where they live,” he said. “They are a part of the forest. Don’t try to kill them. Don’t try to spray insecticide, all that kind of thing. That’s just going to end badly because there are more than you could possibly kill with insecticide. You’d end up killing everything.”

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

U.S. Clay Court Championships enjoying a week in the sun after last year's rain

O n a dreary, damp Thursday exactly one year ago, Max Purcell was in the middle of what surely became, from start to finish, the longest match in the history of the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships.

It had begun on Wednesday, when Purcell took the first set from Daniel Altmaier 6-4. Altmaier responded with a 6-3 second set victory on the next day, but they only made it through 4-all and deuce with Altmaier serving in the eighth game of their third set before the heavens opened again. They were on the court for 41 minutes, off the court for almost 3½ hours, then back on the court for 34 more minutes before tournament officials waved the (sopping) white flag. Play was done for the day.

A pelting rain kept them from resuming until mid-afternoon Friday. Fortunately for everyone except Altmaier, Purcell quickly broke him, then served out the match, finally completing the first round. But the drizzle returned as they retired to the locker room, and there wouldn’t be another point played for the rest of the afternoon and evening. That left the ATP and River Oaks officials with no choice but to schedule both the second round and the quarterfinals for Saturday, with the semis and the final following on Sunday, the latter to be played under the lights for the first time.

This spring? Paradisical by comparison. The only thing brighter than the sun in the blue sky above has been tournament director Bronwyn Greer’s smile. The weather has been splendid, “warm during the day and delightfully cool at night,” Greer said, beaming.

The court conditions have been perfect. The tennis has been excellent. And the crowds, both in terms of size and enthusiasm, have been exceptional. It was literally standing-room-only in the stadium Wednesday night for the top-seeded Ben Shelton’s Houston debut, which became a dramatic 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Zizou Bergs.

“That was great to see, especially for early in the week,” she said. “And we saw the same thing Tuesday night.”

It didn’t come as a surprise, however.

“Our individual tickets go on sale Dec. 1,” Greer said. “Within two weeks, I remember sitting in the office with Haley (Wallace, the tournament manager) and saying, ‘We have no tickets left.’ Demand is at an all-time high. I would guess some of that comes from what happened last year, everyone’s pent-up energy of just wanting to be back. If you were out here in the middle of the week (in 2023), you didn’t get to watch any tennis.

“Honestly, it was one of the hardest weeks of my career and I’ve been working in events for more than 20 years. It’s was hard because you feel like you’re letting people down, even if it’s not your fault. The weather is the one thing you can’t control. Still, you feel like you’re somehow doing something wrong.”

But, what don’t kill you …

“Only makes you stronger,” she said, laughing as she finished the sentence. “You come back and learn from it. But people were very understanding.”

Including the players, who can be a demanding lot even under perfect circumstances. But because they so appreciate the hospitality they receive at River Oaks, which also happens to be one of the most elegant and intimate host venues on the ATP Tour, there was surprisingly little grumbling during the interminable rain delays. When asked if the starting and stopping — and, much of the time, just waiting and waiting and waiting — was getting to him, eventual champion Francis Tiafoe shook his head.

“I’m staying in a nice house across the street, with nice people,” he said. “I’ve been relaxing and having a good time. I like to chill. I’m a pretty relaxed guy.”

Still, there was reason for concern that some players might think twice about returning to Houston when they could be getting an earlier head start on the European clay court season at Estoril in Portugal, with Monte Carlo following next week.

But “if anything,” Greer said, “we’ve got a stronger field this year.”

Case in point: Tiafoe, who prevailed last year as the No. 1 seed, returned to begin his title defense Thursday evening — he would defeat Australia’s James Duckworth 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-5 — as only the third seed, behind Shelton and Francisco Cerundolo.

There were discussions after the tournament concluded about purchasing a tarp to cover at least the stadium court, but the ultimate conclusion would be that, given Houston’s humidity, a flat tarp would stick to the clay and create arguably worse playing conditions when it was removed, while a domed tarp system was too expensive for at most a single week’s use annually.

“We looked at a lot of options,” Greer said. “If you put something directly on the surface, it picks up the whole top layer of clay and that’s definitely not what you want.”

Greer also pointed out that four consecutive, truly disruptive days of rain was a total aberration.

“I’ve been here since 2008 (when the ATP took over the tournament from River Oaks) and tournament director since 2015,” she said, “and we hadn’t had anything like that happen. I can count on one hand the number of rain days we had (before 2023).”

The unsung superheroes of a year ago were, of course, head groundskeeper Roberto Cardoso and his tireless 10-man team, who may have spent more hours on the court than Tiafoe did in claiming the championship. That’s why Cardoso’s and the other’s names are now engraved for perpetuity on the plaque under the north grandstand that honors the annual winners of the Ernie Langston Sportsmanship Award.

“Nobody deserved it more,” Greer said. “Those guys honestly got us through last year. I couldn’t do this job without Roberto.”

Ironically, Purcell, eighth-seeded in singles and a twice-reigning doubles champion, might have been the only person on the grounds Thursday who failed to appreciate the perfect weather vis-à-vis the almost daily quagmire 12 months ago. This time his match done in barely over an hour and a half, and it didn’t go his way. Michael Mmoh advanced to quarters at his expense 6-2, 7-5.

Mmoh, in turn, couldn’t have been a happier camper. He scrawled on the TV camera as he left the court, “Love H-town!!” River Oaks’ atypically fast — at least when dry — red clay is well-suited for his game, particularly his big serve, and the amenities/ambience can’t be beat. Interviewed in front of the fans afterward, he called the tournament “the best 250 (level tournament in) the states,” adding in an interview later, “Easily. Hands down. Everything you do is absolutely on point.

“We really do feel the hospitality. I’ll be coming for years to come.”
