In 6 Maths Chapter 12 Ratio and Proportion, we will study about various types of ratios and their conversions into percentages, fractions or decimals. We compared the two quantities in terms of ‘how many times’. This comparison is known as the Ratio. We denote ratio using symbol ‘:’. Two quantities can be compared only if they are in the same unit. If they are not same convert them into same units. For example in the following questions the quantities are in the same units. Cost of a toffee is ₹0.50 and cost of a chocolate is ₹10. Find the ratio of the cost of a toffee to the cost of a chocolate. Mayank takes 15 minutes to reach school from his house and Shikhar takes one hour to reach school from his house. Find the ratio of the time taken by Mayank to the time taken by Shikhar. In a school, there were 73 holidays in one year. What is the ratio of the number of holidays to the number of days in one year? Note: We can get equivalent ratios by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Ratio and Proportion Class 6 Maths Notes - Chapter 12

Mathematical numbers used in comparing two things which are similar to each other in terms of units are ratios. A ratio can be written in three different ways viz, x to y, x: y and

For example:

  • The ratio of 4 to 5 is 4: 5.
  • Ram’s weight is 40 kgs and Ali’s weight is 80 kgs. To find out the ratio of Ram’s weight to Ali’s weight we need to divide Ram’s weight to Ali’s weight. Therefore, the ratio between Ram’s and Ali’s weight is \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{40}{80}\end{array} \) = 1:2

Comparing things similar to each other is the concept of ratio . And when two ratios are the same, they are said to be in proportion to each other. It is represented by the symbol ‘::’ or ‘=’.

Introduction to Ratio and Proportion

Golden ratio.

Two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to larger of the two quantities.
  • If two numbers a and b are in golden ratio, then  \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{a+b}{a}=\frac{a}{b}\end{array} \)
  • It is approximately equal to 1.618.
  • The ratio is the comparison of a quantity with respect to another quantity.
  • It is denoted by “ : “.
  • Two quantities can be compared only if they are in the same unit.

Example: Father’s age is 75 years and the daughter’s age is 25 years.

⇒ The ratio of father’s age to daughter’s age

Difference between Fractions and Ratios

  • A fraction describes a part of a whole and its denominator represents the total number of parts. Example: 13 means one part out of 3 parts.
  • A ratio is a comparison of two different quantities.
  • Example: In a society, 10 people like driving, 20 people like swimming and the total number of people in society is 30.
  • The ratio of the number of people liking driving to the total number of people = 10:30.
  • The ratio of the number of people liking swimming to the number of people liking driving is 20:10.

For more information on Difference between Fractions and Ratios, watch the below video

assignment on ratio and proportion class 6

Same Ratio in Different Situations

  • Ratios can remain same in different situations.
  • \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{Weight of Joe}{Weight of James}=\frac{50}{100} = 1:2\end{array} \)
  • \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{Number of Girls}{Number of Boys}=\frac{50}{100} = 1:2\end{array} \)

Here, both the above ratios are equal.

Comparing Quantities Using Ratios

  • Quantities can be compared using ratios.
  • Example: Joe worked for 8 hours and James worked for 2 hours. How many times Joe’s working hours is of James’ working hours? Solution: Working hours of Joe = 8 hours ⇒ Working hours of Sheela = 2 hours ⇒ The ratio of working hours of Joe to Sheela = \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{8}{2}=4\end{array} \) .

Therefore, Joe works four times more than James.

Equivalent Ratios

When the given ratios are equal, then these ratios are called as equivalent ratios.
  • Equivalent ratios can be obtained by multiplying and dividing the numerator and denominator with the same number.
  • Example: Ratios 10 : 30   ( = 1 : 3 ) and 11 : 33   ( = 1 : 3 ) are equivalent ratios.

Unitary Method

The method in which first we find the value of one unit and then the value of required number of units is known as Unitary Method.
  • Example:  Cost of two shirts in a shop is Rs.200. What will be the cost of 5 shirts in the shop? Solution : Cost of 2 shirts =  R s . 200 ⇒ Cost of 1 shirt = \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{200}{2}=100\end{array} \) ⇒ Cost of 5 shirts = \(\begin{array}{l}\left ( \frac{200}{2} \right )*5=100*5\end{array} \) =  R s .500

To know more about Unitary Method, visit here .

Proportions

If two ratios are equal, then they are said to be in proportion.
  • Symbol “ :: ” or “ = ” is used to equate the two ratios.
  • Example : Ratios 2:3 and 6:9 are proportional. ⇒ 2:3 :: 6:9 or 2:3 = 6:9

Uses of Ratios and Proportions

  • Example:  Suppose a man travelled 80 km in 2 hours, how much time will he take to travel 40 km? Solution: If x is the required time, then the proportion is 80 : 2 : : 40 : x . ⇒   \(\begin{array}{l}\frac{80}{2} * \frac{40}{x}\end{array} \) ⇒   80 x = 80 ⇒ x = 1   h o u r So, the man takes one hour to complete 40 km.

RS Aggarwal Class 6 Chapter 10 Ratio, Proportion, and Unitary Method – Introduction to the Chapter

The students will start learning how to solve different types of questions related to ratio and proportion along with an introduction to what the unitary method is. The proportion can be understood by a statement that two ratios are equal, and a ratio indicates the number of times a number contains another. So, let's get started!!

Definition: The comparison of two quantities using division is called Ratio. ":" is used to denote the ratio.

For example 5:2 (which is the same as 5/2)

Note: While finding the ratio, the unit of the 2 quantities must be the same.

Lowest Form of Ratio

Definition: When the numerator and denominator have no common factor other than 1, it is called the lowest form of a ratio.

For example: Find the lowest form of the ratio of 13:65.

13/65 = 1/5

Now 1 and 5 have no common factor other than 1.

Therefore, 1:5 is the lowest form of a ratio.

Definition: When two ratios are equal, then it is called proportion.

Formula: Product of extremes = Product of means

Hence, ad = bc

Some Sums on Ratio, Proportion, and Unitary Method

1. What is the ratio of the height of Harry and Ron if the height of Harry is 175 cm and Ron is 1.65m?

Height of Ron= 1.65*100= 165cm

Ratio =   H ight of Harry/ Height of Ron = \[\frac{165}{175}\]

            = 33/35

            = 33:35 (Ans)

2. Find the ratio 30 cm to 4 m is proportion to 25 cm to 5 m or not.

4 m = 4 × 100 cm = 400 cm

The ratio of 30 cm to 400 cm is

30/400=3/40

5 m = 5 × 100 cm = 500 cm

A ratio of 25 cm to 500 cm is

Here, the two ratios are not equal so these ratios are not in proportion.

Hence, 3: 40 ≠ 1: 20 (Ans)

3. Priya can type 540 words in half an hour. How many words will she be able to type in 20 minutes with the same efficiency?

Number of words typed in half an hour i.e. 30 min = 540 seconds

∴ Number of words typed in 1 min = 540/30=18

Number of words typed in 20 min = 20×18=360

Hence, Priya will be able to type 360 words in 20 minutes. (Ans)

4. A and B together can do a piece of work in 15 days, while B alone can finish it within 20 days. In how many days can A alone finish the work?

Time is taken by (A + B) to finish the work = 15 days.

Time is taken by B alone to finish the work = 20 days.

(A + B)’s 1 day’s work = ¹/₁₅

 B’s 1 day’s work = ¹/₂₀

A’s 1 day’s work = {(A + B)’s 1 day’s work} - {B’s 1 day’s work}

= (¹/₁₅ - ¹/₂₀) = (4 - 3)/60 = ¹/₆₀

Therefore, A alone can finish the work in 60 days. (Ans)

2. What is the basic concept of Ratio, Proportion, and Unitary Method?

The unitary method, in simple words, is used to calculate the value of a single unit from a specified multiple. If the cost of 40 pens is Rs. 400, how do you calculate the cost of one pen? The unitary approach can be used to accomplish this. Furthermore, once the value of a single unit has been determined, the value of the required units can be calculated by multiplying the single value unit. This approach is mostly used to calculate ratios and proportions.

3. Is Ratio, Proportion, and Unitary Method an easy topic in Mathematics?

Yes, it is easy if you solve it daily. Completing all of the chapter assignments is usually a good idea because they provide important practice. Math is not a subject that can be mastered solely via reading or memorization.

It necessitates a significant amount of effort and practise. There are examples and activities after each part of the NCERT textbook. After you've finished each lesson, go over the solved examples to make sure you've grasped everything.

Then go over the activities to see if you can figure out how to complete them. Because it's possible that the same questions will occur on the exam, students should practise the sums in the exercises thoroughly.

4. How can I prepare well for my Class 6 Maths exam?

Practice is the only thing that matters. The more you practise, the closer you will go to mathematical perfection. While your teacher is instructing you in class, try to focus and concentrate more. Also, if you attend Vedantu's tuition classes, make sure you comprehend and learn the concepts of each lesson. If you have a question, ask it at the same moment and don't be afraid to ask or clarify it. To mention this because We've seen children keep silent even when they are unsure because they are hesitant. If you agree, then ask any questions you have after the class. We will undoubtedly assist you in better understanding the subject.
