Handbook of Frankfurt School Critical Theory Vol. 2

Frank Engster

The understanding of one’s own societal and historical conditions of conscious-ness and knowledge was the core idea of critique in the first generation of Critical Theory. Its program can be summarised as the aim to unite social and epistemological critique. Although it is possible to apply this approach to the program of Critical Theory in general, it was primarily Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno who characterised its realisation. First, the paper will look at the idea of critique in general will show its aim to combine social, epistemological and economical critique and to understand this as society’s self-critique. Second, it will show how the idea of society’s self-critique points to its self-mediation and how the mediation of subject-object as formulated in German Idealism, especially in Kant and Hegel, is used for a “materialist socialising” and “negative turn” of this mediation in Marx’ Critique of the Political Economy. Finally, it takes a closer look at the crucial kernel of this critique: the mediation that constitutes a specific capitalist objectivity and a corresponding subjectivity.

We began our preparation of this volume using the Fourth Printing, having assumed that this edition marked an improvement over the previous one. Only much later did it become clear, after some spot-checking with the Third Printing , that in certain very important respects the newer printing reflected a carelessness that rendered it inferior to its the inconsistent use of Greek and German characters for the same words which introduced unnecessary confusion; there were also instances where verticle lines that Lenin placed in the margins adjacent to his comment were omitted. On a couple of other ocassions small blocks of text were reordered , and while such practice can clearly fall within the purview of editorial discretion, there were also a couple of places where a few lines of text are repeated, word for word, with no ac-where there were disrepancies between the Third and Fourth printings, be they substantive or merely annoying, the greater confidence in the Third Printing prevailed. Notwithstanding such carelessness, we proceeded to use the Fourth Printing as the basis for the formatting, layout and pagination of this digital edition. The afore-mentioned faux pas were removed and this required some reformatting, and this proceeded on the basis of the 1972 printing. Perhaps it is worth noting that neither edition was particulaly generous in translating into English the German expressions and phrases Lenin's frequently used in the body of the texts. Nor companying editorial note to indicate that such a faux pas the problem was with the editorial staff). In nearly all cases had its source in Lenin's reading notes (which suggests that predecessor. This thesis examines the emergence of Walter Benjamin’s materialism, within his early thought, from within the context of post-Kantian philosophy. The original contribution made by this thesis is that it differentiates Benjamin’s materialism from both Romanticism and neo-Kantianism, on the one side, and empiricism, on the other. In contrast to those who identify Benjamin as a practitioner of a Romantic form of immanence, a neo-Kantian or a mystical empiricist, I place Benjamin’s materialism within the context of the conflict between an empiricist form of materialism and post-Kantian idealism. This thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, I examine the history of materialism and its critical reception in the Kantian idealist tradition. The second chapter examines of the development of Karl Marx’s materialism. I show that Marx’s conception of reality fundamentally challenges traditional conceptions of idealism and materialism. In the third chapter, I show that Benjamin’s critique of neo-Kantianism necessarily points towards a concept of knowledge that can encompass the particularity of experience qua sense experience within itself, something that is closed off in the neo-Kantian attempt to secure the objective validity of knowledge. The final chapter focuses on Benjamin’s attempt to locate an expanded concept of experience. I look at several instances of how this concept manifests itself in the poem, life and language. I develop a materialist account of the idea that runs counter to the neo-Kantian one. Finally, I conclude by showing the limits of the Romantic concept of immanence for Benjamin. Throughout this thesis, I examine how Benjamin breaks out of both the neo- Kantian and Romantic strands of post-Kantian idealism. I also pay close attention to Benjamin’s critique of empiricism. This thesis demonstrates that Benjamin’s materialism emerges out of a serious engagement with that tradition, yet it remains irreducible to a form of neo-Kantianism, Romanticism, or empiricism.
