About the Program

Our Ph.D. in Instructional Technology prepares you for leadership roles in research and development of new knowledge and applications in instructional technology. Explore issues and advances in performance, instruction, computer-based and distance-learning environments. We stress competence and originality as we build on the practical competencies of your master’s program to prepare you to integrate theory and skills as the base for original research. 

Our graduates organize theory and research; employ appropriate research methodologies; synthesize past experiences and training in instructional technology applications; and use those backgrounds in the development of theoretical constructs for new or better applications. They work in all levels of education, industry and government as well as the nonprofit sector.

Program Mode of Delivery

Program modalities are flexible and designed to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. All coursework can be taken fully online, blended or in-person as we do not differentiate on-campus or online students.

To complete the degree, you’ll compete at least 63 credit hours, including the 15-hour dissertation and at least nine credit hours of optional cognate coursework agreed on between you and your advisory committee.

Ed.d. program curriculum.

The online Ed.D. in Educational Technology takes a minimum of 3 years to complete. Students have to complete a minimum of 90 hours beyond their bachelor’s degree to graduate with their doctoral degree.

• The minimum required credits to be completed with the online cohort are 54 credits, in addition to which students choose electives and transfer credits from their Masters degree.
• Students take 6 credits with their cohort each semester (Fall, Spring and Summer). This includes online courses and seminars, and online synchronous sessions.
• Degree completion depends on the student’s ability to complete program requirements to a level commensurate with doctoral level work.

The program consists of 36 credit hours of coursework (plus 18 hours of dissertation credit hours). Coursework includes 24 credit hours in the instructional and performance technology core and 12 credit hours of research and analysis coursework. Students will develop, implement, and evaluate an applied research-based dissertation-in-practice in conjunction with their coursework. This fully online program includes three residencies. Each residency will consist of online work before and after the residency, which consists of a few days of intensive face-to-face work.

Residencies

Three residencies are embedded in the online doctorate in instructional design and technology. Each residency is integrated with a Doctoral Seminar class, and will consist of online work before and after, which consists of a few days of intensive face-to-face work. These residencies help build a professional learning community among faculty and peers by allowing you to interact in a face-to-face environment.

• The first residency occurs during the first year of coursework and focuses on professional and scholarly writing and the skills necessary to lead instructional and non-instructional performance improvement projects.
• The second residency occurs during the second year of coursework and focuses on the analysis and dissemination of root causes and proposed solutions to identified problems of practice.
• The third and final residency takes place at the end of your coursework, and serves as the Capstone Experience for the Ed.D. degree program. During this residency students will present and defend the completed dissertation-in-practice and demonstrate mastery of all program level outcomes.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to UWF’s online Ed.D. program in instructional design, you must have a graduate degree from an accredited institution. Other criteria for successful admission includes a GPA of 3.5 or higher on the most recent graduate degree from an institution whose accrediting agency is included on the list of   UWF approved accrediting agencies .

Students will be admitted to the program in Fall (August start). Spring and Summer admission are not offered.

To apply for this program, you first need to submit an application for graduate admission (plus a $30 application fee) and be accepted for admission to the University of West Florida. In addition, you must:

The Candidacy Examination

The candidacy examination, administered each term by the faculty in instructional technology, includes sections on research skills and learning theory as well as the major area of study. Early contact with the program advisor to discuss the examination is highly recommended. If your first attempt at the candidacy examination is unsuccessful, the advisory committee will determine what remediation appears warranted and when you can attempt the examination again.

Culminating experience Dissertation

Coursework and research experiences in the Learning Sciences and Technologies program address a range of practice-based and theoretical problems in schools, in online learning, and in community settings. Coursework and research experiences consider learning in its full richness and context, using sociocultural, cognitive, and psychological perspectives. Taking an interdisciplinary stance, faculty and students explore how to enhance learning, motivation, and engagement, for the world's diversity of learners, in a range of formal, informal, and online educational settings. Our graduate students study learning in traditional contexts using new technological approaches, and they study new and emerging pedagogies for learning such as constructionist environments, simulations, massive online open courses, serious games, and intelligent tutoring systems. Because of the significance we attach to the building of knowledge from experiences as educators and educational designers, we expect most students to have, on admission to the program, either teaching/instructional experiences (in or outside of school settings), educational design/development experience, or experience as a learning analytics practitioner. Students will build a program of study that includes courses in teaching and learning, social foundations, and research methods. Students in the program participate in field-based research and collaborative projects with practitioners in schools or other educational settings, and/or work with large-scale educational data sets. Students learn not only from a rigorous program of study, but also from active participation in a community of learners including practicing and prospective teachers, and educational designers and researchers.

The Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and Technologies focuses on the preparation of researchers and researcher/developers in education. The program includes formal courses, mentored research, and informal seminars. Ph.D. students are required to hold a master’s degree prior to beginning the Ph.D. program, and are expected to have experience in educational practice. You will build a program of study that includes courses in teaching and learning, social foundations, and research methods. Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited Ed.D. or PhD in Education with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your PhD degree after the last day of class for your EdD or PhD in Education degree.
• Complete a Doctoral Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 9 credit hours of completion for an EdD or PhD in Education program.
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

Graduates from our EdD program have opportunities in different areas. For example, some of our graduates work in higher education either as faculty or instructional designers helping faculty and students with the course design and technical support. Other graduates work as instructional designers in different environments such as schools, school districts, or other educational environments.

Our students do research in diverse areas in educational technology, such as professional development, online learning, learning analytics, data mining, games and simulations, and mobile technologies.

Applicants are required to have earned at least a baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or a degree from a non-U.S. institution of higher education that is judged equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree and master’s degree by the International Admissions office and have an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 (based on a 4-point scale) computed for all undergraduate credits from the applicant’s most recent baccalaureate degree and a graduate (GPA) of 3.50 (based on a 4-point scale) computed for all graduate credits.

A prospective student may apply at any time and should follow the general graduate application procedure for degree-seeking students (see Graduate Admission Regulations ). Admission to the program is based on:

• Official transcripts from all colleges attended.
• A letter of application that adheres to the guidelines linked from the EdD Program Application page.
• A current résumé or curriculum vitae.
• A writing sample.
• Three letters of recommendation.
• GRE Scores: The GRE is not required for an application, but can be submitted if the applicant desires to do so.

Students in the online Doctor of Education in Educational Technology program are not required to be physically present on campus for classes, presentations, etc. In most cases, students are required to be enrolled in seven graduate credit hours per semester for the first two years of the program (exceptions are made based on a plan of study that accounts for transfer credits). Students must be enrolled in at least one credit hour every semester thereafter until successfully defending the dissertation (even if all courses and thesis hours have been completed).

Application Deadlines

Submit application and admission materials well in advance of the deadline to ensure the application is complete by the deadline. Please note that all new cohorts start in the FALL semester.

• Early Review Deadline: No later than the first Monday of November*
• Regular Deadline: No later than before the first Monday of February

* At the early review deadline, selected applications will go through our review process. If an applicant is offered a place in the upcoming cohort (which starts the following fall semester), they can take class(es) in the upcoming spring and/or summer semesters related to the elective or cognate requirements, if so desired – there is no obligation to do so. If a completed application is ready by early November, but is not reviewed in the “early review” cycle, it will be reviewed again during the regular Spring review starting in February.

Dr. McIntyre-Brandly has over 25 years of experience in education, having served several years in teaching and administrative roles in P–12 and higher education. Northeastern University Professional Programs

Northeastern University's undergraduate online program emphasizes bachelor's degree completion. You can earn degrees in in-demand fields such as analytics, information technology, and project management. The curriculum for each degree requires general education, major courses, and elective credits.

Transfer credits can satisfy general education and other requirements as stated. Graduate students have access to Northeastern's extensive catalog of online graduate degrees. Master's degrees include the fields of applied psychology, biotechnology, and energy systems.

Florida International University

The notable BA in sustainability and the environment requires coursework on South Florida's ecology and applied field ecology. FIU's BS in hospitality management program offers eight online majors, including hospitality leadership and event management. 

FIU pairs every online undergrad with a success coach. Other services include professional development programs and free online therapy sessions. First-year applicants must submit high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores. 

Drexel University

Most programs run on a 10-week quarter system with an additional week for exams. Depending on the program, you can transfer credits earned at another accredited institution. Drexel will evaluate all possible transfer credits for accepted students. 

Drexel provides a variety of online student support services, such as its writing center, a career development center, teletherapy services, and a 24-hour access to its library resources. Around 95% of undergraduate students receive financial aid. Students can apply for employer tuition discounts, scholarships and grants provided at each of its campuses, and veteran benefit programs. As a Philadelphia employee, East Falls campus students can get a 25% discount on any accelerated bachelor of science degree program.

The university accepts a maximum of 87 transfer credits from previously attended college-level courses, military training, and certain exams, such as the CLEP and the DSST. 

Parker University

Fully Online

Many programs are fully online, which means you don’t need to visit campus. You’ll take classes virtually with no in-person requirements. However, some fully online programs do require face-to-face components such as labs, practicums, or internships. Distance learners can complete these requirements in their local area.

When researching programs, check whether it’s 100% online or includes some in-person learning. These programs can be either synchronous or asynchronous.

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous

What’s the difference between synchronous and asynchronous classes ? Synchronous classes take place at a set time. Students attend live lectures where they interact with faculty and classmates. In contrast, asynchronous classes use recorded lectures that students watch on their schedule.

Some prefer the live interaction of a synchronous format. Busy students, especially working adults, often prefer the flexibility of an asynchronous learning format.
