Comprehensive Examination Progress

Dissertation Requirements

The PhD program emphasizes preparation for teaching, research, and extension work in academia, as well as for careers in agrifood business, government and international agriculture. The program usually requires about three years beyond the master's program to complete. The size, quality and diversity of the faculty provide a broad choice of advisors and research topics. While students and their advisory committees have latitude in developing a plan of study, the following specialties are emphasized in our program: Environmental and Development Economics; Managerial, Behavioral & Organizational Economics; and Public Policy Analysis.

The general requirements for the PhD consist of theory and methods courses, followed by a well-balanced selection of field, elective, and research courses in agricultural and applied economics and other disciplines at the graduate level. The course of study will prepare students for the qualifier exam taken after the first year of courses, the comprehensive exam assessing competency in his or her chosen fields of study, and independent research. A dissertation embodying the results of original research must be written on a subject approved by the program committee. An oral examination over the dissertation completes the degree requirements.

The minimum requirements for the PhD are 72 credit hours of graduate coursework, with at least 30 credit hours from courses numbered 8000–9000, exclusive of dissertation research, problems or independent study. No more than 30 credit hours can be transferred from an MS program. Specific requirements are as follows:

Subsequent Semesters: A student can take Field and/or Elective courses. Or Research and/or Dissertation hours.

Students take the Qualifier Exam after completing the first year sequence of courses. Students must pass the Qualifier Exam to continue in the PhD program. The Qualifier Exam consists of two parts. (1) The Microeconomics Qualifier Exam is administered in May of the first year by the Economics Department and is taken at the same time first year Economics PhD students take the exam. Students who fail the Micro Qualifier in May can retake the exam in August. (2) An average GPA of 3.25 for the other courses in the first year core.

Comprehensive Examination Process

Students take the Comprehensive Exam after passing the qualifier exam and completing coursework, including core courses and field courses. The Comprehensive Exam consists of three parts: the written dissertation proposal, a written comprehensive exam, and an oral examination. The Comprehensive Exam is administered by the student’s Doctoral Program Committee. The Comprehensive Exam must be completed at least seven months before the final dissertation defense.

Two types of dissertations are acceptable. The first type of dissertation is organized around a single topic and typically is a lengthy monograph of research findings. The second type of dissertation is a compilation of three essays that are related to a general theme or topic. Students select dissertation topics in consultation with their Doctoral Program Committee.

Admission into the PhD program is determined by an assessment of program prerequisites and application materials. Prerequisites for the PhD program include courses in intermediate microeconomics; intermediate macroeconomics; econometrics or regression and correlation analysis; differential calculus; and statistics. Applicants who have not met these prerequisites or have limited background in economics may be required to correct these deficiencies or take certain courses without graduate credit before being formally admitted into the program. A master’s degree in economics, agricultural economics, or a related field, is preferred but not required for admittance into the PhD program. Minimum requirements for admission into the PhD program are a Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) or equivalent and undergraduate GPA of 3.2. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an equivalent English competency test is required of applicants whose first language is not English, with minimum TOEFL scores of 80 if internet-based. Applicants should also take the GRE or GMAT exams. Domestic and international students are equally welcome to apply.

This thesis explores topics in Agricultural Economics and is composed of five papers. In the first paper (Chapter 2), a latent-class stochastic frontier model is used to estimate efficiency scores of farmers in Ethiopia. Compared to conventional models, which assume a unique frontier, much lower inefficiencies are found, suggesting that part of the inefficiencies uncovered in the literature could be an artefact of the methods used. The second paper (Chapter 3) revisits the link between cereal diversity and productivity using a panel dataset in Ethiopia. The results suggest that the positive effect between cereal diversity and productivity becomes much smaller when households who produce teff (a low-productivity and high-value crop) are excluded from the sample, hinting at the possibility that results could be driven by yield differentials between cereals, rather than diversity. The third paper (Chapter 4) estimates the labour impacts of the adoption of Soil and Water Conservation technologies (SWC) in Ethiopia. The results suggest that adopting SWC technologies leads to an increase in adult and child labour. Understanding the labour impacts is important in itself, but it also raises concerns about using impact evaluation methods that require no change in inputs as an identifying assumption of impacts. Paper 4 (Chapter 5), assesses the pertinence of a drought index that has recently been proposed in the literature by Yu and Babcock (2010) and argues that it defines drought too narrowly. An extension to this index is proposed and we show, using a dataset of Indian districts, that the original index is likely to underestimate the impacts of drought. In Paper 5 (Chapter 6), we identify data-driven ranges of rainfall for which the marginal effects of a rainfall-temperature index (RTI) are different and then we discuss how the impacts of drought have changed over the 1966-2009 period in India. Finally, Chapter 7 concludes.

Ph D in Agricultural Economics

Agricultural Economics deals with exploring the link between Agriculture and the Economy . It describes how societies use available resources to meet the complex needs of people. Agricultural economists study agriculture from a business context with multiple goals and social welfare in mind which involves where and how products are being produced, consumed, financed, marketed, processed, regulated, researched, taxed and exported wherever and whenever possible and interrelation ship among these.

Student dissertation topics span a wide range of contemporary issues related to modern techniques of agricultural production and farm planning, natural resources management and environmental economics, climate change impacts, supply chain, IPR, Geographical Indications, value chain, agricultural project financing, international trade policies, research prioritization, agricultural and rural development and behavioural economics.
To impart skill among economists for undertaking innovative and policy oriented research in frontier areas of agricultural economics covering wide range of issues to achieve developmental objectives of the State, Nation and Global society with suitable plans.

Study Programme

The Doctoral programme in Agricultural Economics has been designed following ICAR guidelines.

The major courses offered are Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Agricultural Production Economics, Advanced Econometrics, , Natural Resource Economics, Environmental Economics, Institutional Economics, International Trade and Advanced Agricultural Marketing. The curriculum includes a comprehensive treatment of modern theory and advanced sophisticated empirical techniques as well as courses taught by well experienced teachers in each of the subfields of the discipline.

Primary objective of student dissertation topics in Doctoral Programme is equipping students for undertaking independent and multidisciplinary research in frontier areas of agricultural economics.

Master’s in Agricultural Economics

Doctoral Course Work

After admission, the students undergo a set of courses that help them understand the advanced topics of Agricultural Economics as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total credit load of 30 credits. Courses will be offered for two semesters in the first year of the degree programme.

Doctoral thesis research

After completing the courses in the first year, the students start their thesis research. Each student is assigned to an experienced faculty to be the Chair person of the advisory committee, approved by the Dean of School of Post-Graduate Studies. The committee would guide the student on his/ her choice of research topic to complete 75 credits. At the end of the degree programme the students is expected to submit a dissertation report highlighting the research problems addressed, methodology followed and results obtained.

Research internship

The students are exposed to several scientific events like symposia and conferences showing the means to get financial assistance for their study. Many are encouraged to have internship training at other institutes for a couple of months, either in India or abroad.

I am Aishwarya parthipan pursuing my Ph. D in Agricultural Economics from Department of Agricultural Economics, Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore,during the academic year 2020-23.PG and PH. D courses (syllabus) offered in our department were updated every year based on the current scenario expected (Data analysis-training on R, Python, STATA, GIS, Power BI, Tableau) to meet public and private sector organizations and students are prepared to stay top in grabbing the chance in future.All major and minor courses are taught practically with proper subject theoretical knowledge, which assists students in understanding and implementing during their research work.Even during the COVID pandemic, faculty members worked hard to ensure that each and every one of the students understood the practical classes clearly.Faculties in our department are open and accessible to students for clarifying doubts, motivating and guiding the research students to think innovatively in addressing the current and future agricultural economics research issues. Department of Agricultural Economics provide easy access to secondary data sources from NSSO recent survey data, cost of cultivation data report from CCPC at various level to all PG and Ph. D research students. Students are encouraged to attend and present their research works on national and international seminars and conferences such as ISAE, AERA, GRC, AGSC, CEDECON in both online and offline. As young researchers, feedback and suggestions from experts assisted us in gaining insights on the latest trends in order to develop the work further for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Our department also provides several opportunities for students to pursue future research overseas and work as interns with prestigious institutions. I feel thankful to all the faculty members and research guide for providing the opportunity to sharpen my knowledge on the subject and research work.

I am Bharathi.P currently pursuing III Ph.D. in the department of Agricultural Economics, Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University during the academic year 2020-2023.In the department of agricultural economics, they offered courses from different domains which includes micro and macroeconomics, econometrics, international economics, agricultural marketing and production, natural resource economics, etc. These courses are very helpful for the preparation of Bank Exams like NABARD, RBI, etc. where the majority of the portions are covered by these courses. This will also help to clear UGC NET exams. They also offered PGS courses (Non credit courses) which will be conducive to learn other than the major courses. The faculties in this department are well experienced, student friendly and encourage the students to learn more about the subjects. The Professors in this department give greatest effort to invigorate the students in doing the research in their interesting fields. The mentor will also encourage the students to do the research in the current issues. This will inspire them to do more valuable research. In addition, they cheer up the students to do the research work in collaborating with other international institutions and to tie up with diversified enterprises and stakeholders. This will spark them to learn and earn concomitantly. The Professors also encourage the students to publish their research paper in highly NAAS rated journals. This will also add credit to their research profile. They also arranged guest lectures on statistical software’s like MATLAB during the course work which would be useful for me to do the statistical analysis. They conducted workshops, seminars on statistical tools and software’s like R, SPSS, Python which would help me to gain the knowledge on how to handle the data and how to do the research analysis. This will also help me in the future to work as a data analyst. They, in addition motivate the students to participate in the national as well as the international conferences, seminars and workshops, etc. in offline as well as online mode. This will help the students to get more contacts in the relevant field. At long last, I am very thankful to all the Professors who help me to learn and well versed in the field of economics.

Problem discussion: According to Coyle, Bardi, & Langley Jr., 2003, companies have always struggled in dealing properly with its outbound- to- customer logistics side, given the importance of such. In this case specifically, the investigation of the functions and processes employed by the Order Management department within Ericsson’s Chinese operations was the starting point for understanding what are the relevant problems existing; the reasons, probable impacts, possible opportunities for improvement as well as suggestions in doing so. Based on such premises, the authors have gone through these “challenges” to try to understand how in the case of Ericsson the company have or is dealing with such issues.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to provide a general overview of the department’s existing processes, functions, detected problems and finally suggestions for improvements toward such problems.

Research Method: The Case Study approach was chosen by the authors given the characteristics of this study in pursuing the objectives stated, emphasized by the fact that the authors observed the current situation within an Ericsson’s department and the company’s perceptions. Coupled with this, the qualitative methods combined with a small portion of quantitative perspective have been used in order to provide the necessary research structure, followed by questionnaires and an interview as secondary data.

Conclusion: The conducted research was able to detect that within the department the two most relevant problems considering the employees’ and manager’s perspective is related consequently to the ERP system currently employed and inexperience by the department’s personnel in conducting their tasks. Further the authors point out suggestions for improving such issues.

Many reasons have been suggested as explanation for observed differences in citizens' environmental conservation projects policy choices and willingness-to-pay (WTP) values. Some people attribute this distinctive decision behavior to contrasts in the overall policy outcome expectations (preference heterogeneity) and/or differences in reactions to the changes in the environmental attributes (response heterogeneity). Others attribute this to differences in individual choice rationales, personalities, encounters, and past and present experiences. In other words, regardless of the possibility that outcomes are the same, people do not have the same emotions, convictions, disposition, or motivations.

In three separate essays, I investigate the possible reasons for the observed differences in citizens' environmental conservation policy choices and examine how preference and response heterogeneity arise. In the first essay, I ask if a priori environmental damage perception is a source of heterogeneity affecting conservation option choice decisions. In the second, I investigate if social networks (interactions among decision-making agents) affect choice decisions. In the third, I investigate if preferences change when decision making agents are allowed to deliberate among peers.

For the first essay, I conducted an on-line choice experiment (CE) survey. The survey asked questions that help to measure citizen preference for protecting environmental public goods, ascertain the value local residents are willing-to-pay (WTP), and determine how preference heterogeneity arises. CE attributes included groundwater use (measured by share of total water use from groundwater), aquatic habitat (measured by count of spawning kokanee salmon return), natural habitat health (measured by the sensitive ecosystem area reclaimed), and rural character (measured by a decrease in urban sprawl and/or a decrease in population density in rural areas). I used a special property levy as the vehicle of payment. Random parameter logit (RP) and latent class (LC) models were estimated to capture response and preference heterogeneity. The results suggest that (1) both preference and response heterogeneities were found for the choices and all environmental attributes respectively (2) respondents who have a higher value for one environmental good will have a higher value for other environmental goods, and (3) a priori damage perception could be one of the sources of response and preference heterogeneity.

In the same survey, I included people's egocentric networks, interactions, environment related activities and perceptions to empirically evaluate whether social network effect (SNE) is a source of systematic differences in preference. I estimate consumer preferences for a hypothetical future environmental conservation management alternative described by its attributes within a Nested Logit Model: nesting broader and distinct conservation options within choices impacted by individual’s network structure. The results show that some network centrality measures capture preference heterogeneity, and consequently the differences in WTP values in a systematic way.

Third, I compare the value estimated based on the traditional choice experiment (CE) with the results obtained using the citizen jury (CJ) approach or a group-based approach or also called the "Market Stall" in some literature. I estimate the effect of deliberation on conservation choice outcomes by removing any significant differences between the people who participated in the CJ (people who volunteered to be contacted again after deliberation treatment) and those people who did the survey twice but did not volunteer for CJ (control group) in terms of their socioeconomic status and be able attribute the changes in preferences to deliberation treatment only. CJ approach involved two 90 minute deliberations held over two days to discuss and consider their preferences and WTP values with other household members. Results show that deliberation improves individuals' valuation process and there is observed difference in choice outcomes between the deliberation treatment and control groups. Both preference and response heterogeneity relatively vanish when people were allowed to deliberate among peers.

The major questions that are addressed here are how and why agricultural producers decide among different land use choices, crop selection, and land conservation measures and how their decision vary over time? The first essay examines the long run land conversion trend interconnected with change in crop, oil, and ethanol prices, climate and renewable fuel policy mandates. Data are obtained from Cropland Data Layer from 1997 to 2015 period of National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) at the USDA. The first essay employs a Seemingly Unrelated Tobit Regression approach to better understand the connection between land conversion and crop prices, biofuel policies, biophysical environment. Key findings indicate land-use conversion from grassland to cropland is relatively higher across the ND counties.

The second essay is designed to investigate the relationship between crop acreage response and socio-economic and environmental drivers. We use prices for crude oil, planted acres of major crops (corn, wheat, soybean, hay) and prices from the period of 1990 to 2015. This essay focuses on corn acreage response due to crop prices, energy policies, climate and other socio-economic factors using a Fixed Effect parameter framework.

The final essay estimates environmental benefits due to adoption of conservation practices. In other words, it analyzes the economic and environmental benefits of implemented conservation practices at Bad River watershed in South Dakota using an integrated framework. For example, in an article in the Global Journal of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development (2016), a Benefit Cost Analysis model is utilized to assess soil conservation benefits and evaluate economic impacts of conservation measures at a watershed scale. The economic analysis includes estimation of benefit cost ratio, annual rate of return of conservation practices. Key findings suggest that benefit value of sediment reduction average $2.13 per ton expressed in constant (year = 2000) dollars and the ratio of benefits to costs is greater than 1.

Since 1865 California has practiced underground water storage through artificial recharge; however, in many parts of the state these efforts have been insufficient to meet its growing water demands, particularly for irrigated agriculture. During dry periods, vast agricultural areas depend upon groundwater for irrigation. In these areas, groundwater banking (GB) should be an essential strategy of their water management operations. GB is the practice of using surface water for percolation or injection into aquifers for later recovery. One variation of GB currently being studied in California is the use of agricultural lands for this practice (Ag-GB). Economic implications of Ag-GB need to be analyzed to inform water agencies and farmers interested in implementing this practice. This study proposes a conceptual model for determining the economic feasibility of Ag-GB at the irrigation district level. The Orland-Artois Water District (OAWD) in Glenn County is considered as the case study, and alfalfa as the test crop due to its tolerance to flooding and low use of pesticides and fertilizers which could leach into the aquifer. The proposed model consists of four components. The first component, the agricultural water demand calculator, calculates agricultural water demands based on historic land use, monthly reference evapotranspiration (ETo), monthly average precipitation, and average crop coefficient (Kc) values for the region. The second component, the aquifer mass balance model, is a one-bucket mass balance model that quantifies inflows and outflows to the simplified aquifer. The third component, the agronomic model, estimates costs and benefits of Ag-GB in terms of energy savings from pumping and crop production. The fourth component, the economic feasibility output, evaluates costs and benefits are evaluated to determine economic feasibility. The period of analysis is from 1993 through 2013.

Two policies (A and B) for implementation of Ag-GB are proposed and tested. Policy A proposes that all growers in OAWD pay for the implementation of the Ag-GB program. Policy B proposes that alfalfa growers using their lands for Ag-GB (Ag-GB alfalfa growers) are exempted from paying for Ag-GB implementation and the rest of the growers (non Ag-GB growers) pay for it. The economic analysis suggests that Policy A brings more costs than benefits to the Ag-GB alfalfa growers and hence is rejected as feasible. Policy B seems to bring more benefits than costs to all growers in OAWD and therefore it has potential to be economically feasible under the assumptions and limitations of the model.
