Childhood Memories Essay

Recalling childhood memories lead us to experience the feelings of our old days. These childhood memories are such that they last forever. Some memories help us to recall the pleasant moments of our life. But, some of the memories scare us because we have both good and bad experiences in our childhood. These childhood memories help us to go through the tough days of our lives in a happy and cheerful manner. They give strength to overcome difficult situations and fight against them. We all remember our childhood friends, interesting incidents relating to them, our family members, relatives, and so many other things. Childhood is a lovely time that everyone remembers. It is the period that everyone cherishes as this builds our foundation when we are growing. In our childhood, we were carefree and innocent. We don’t know what jealousy is and have no complexes regarding ourselves and others. It was time for play, studies and vacations. We were gorging on our favourite food without any restrictions, playing pranks on our siblings, and supporting our siblings when we had to face the wrath of our parents. Those days won’t come back, but we can remember those childhood memories.

My Childhood Memories

I have a lot of childhood memories. Here, I will be sharing the one which is the most memorable to me. In my childhood, we used to go to my grandparents’ house at least once a year. We mostly visit my grandparents’ house during my school summer vacation. My grandparents live in a small village which is located near Kanpur city in Uttar Pradesh. I wake up early in the morning and go to the farmhouse. Near the farmhouse, we have farming land, where various crops are grown. By that time in the summer, the crops are ready to harvest. I love to see the harvesting process. In the farmhouse, I get prepared by taking a bath in the running water of the tubewell. I love that moment. The cold water and fresh air refresh my mind, and it starts my day full of positive energy.

My grandmother cooks the food in the traditional style by using the “Chulha”, a U-shaped mud stove made from local clay. I love the taste of cooked food. It’s so delicious and yummy. Also, during summer, my grandmother made papad, pickles of mango and green chilli. I just love eating them. We also have one cow and two buffaloes in the farmhouse. Due to this, there is a lot of milk and curd available in my house. It’s my duty to make Lassi, and we drink it every day after having lunch. At night, we sleep on the terrace to feel cool during summer. All my cousins gather at the terrace, and we enjoy it together. Everyone drinks a glass of milk before going to sleep.

Another naughty incident that I remember from my childhood was when I was studying at LKG. My parents had gone for a walk after having dinner at night. They informed me that they would be coming back soon, so I should not lock the door from the inside. I was watching the TV and said ok. After some time, I went to the kitchen to have a glass of water, and I locked the main door. I didn’t realise when I slept while watching the TV. My parents came, and they kept knocking on the door. I didn’t get up, and they had to be outside the home for the whole night. They went to the neighbours’ house and stayed there. In the morning, when I got up, I opened the door and called my parents.

Childhood is the best part of everyone’s life. Childhood memories give us different kinds of experiences. Whatever we have learned in our childhood lasts for a long time. Some experiences are joyful, while some help us learn lessons. These lessons give us the strength to stay positive in life even when situations are not in our favour.

I’ve completed my school from a village primary school. That was a very good experience for me. I can remember lots of incidents from there. I went to visit a village fair with my father and we bought lots of toys for me and my siblings. 

I still can feel the ‘Nagordola’, lots of people, colorful shops, and songs playing on loudspeakers when I close my eyes. These feelings and memories are priceless. I wish if I could go back to my past and see childhood again, that would be amazing. But I know it’s not possible. I miss my childhood a lot.

I have so many memories that I can remember now. Most of them are related to my family , parents, and siblings. Because I have spent most of my childhood times with them. My father was a government worker then and he had very little time to spend with his family.

But still, he managed to spend a huge time with us. I loved his activities. He took us to different places for a picnic. My mom used to cook very delicious meals for us. I can remember, we were staying at a village in Bihar and it was the house of an uncle. We went for a long drive from there. 

There was an amazing side view on the road. I loved the villages of Bihar. The people were friendly. I spent an amazing time with my cousins there. These memories are very bright on my mind and I love to think about all those days.

Childhood is that time when we had nothing to worry about. We were free and only spent time with our fellow childhood friends. We could do anything. We had no limitation to do anything. 

I had an awesome childhood that I love to recall again and again. I wish I could get back to my childhood. That is a mind-blowing part of my life. 

When I think about my childhood, it reminds a few of my friends, such as Satish, Jay, and Ganesh. We lived in a rural area in Bihar. That area was very beautiful nature. I loved spending time with nature. When we were students of class 1 or 2, we used to leave school and go to the river.

First Day at School: 

The first day at school is the best childhood memory that I can recall. That was a tough day for me. I was not a good boy who wanted to go to school with his own wish. I did different things to not go to school. 

But finally, my father bought me some books, a school bag, and a school uniform and I agreed to go to school. The first day was full of scariness for me. We went to the headmaster’s room and he asked me some easy questions. I knew the answers but I was unable to answer due to lots of pressure going on in my head. 

I love to think about all of my childhood memories, these memories are my own and that’s what pushed me to create my personality and character. We all need to appreciate our memories in childhood.

It was very exciting for me. I always was an attentive student and I used to make good results in the class. My teachers loved me a lot for that. These memories are very sweet and I wish I could go back there and experience the same thing again.

A Horrible Experience of Childhood:

Along with lots of good experiences I have some horrible childhood experiences too. When I was five years old, I didn’t know how to swim. And that time I was in the village. We were playing football and there was a pond near the field. 

When the ball went to the pond, someone went and picked it. A boy thought I might know how to swim and he pushed me to the pond. When I was trying to come out of the water but couldn’t he was laughing and thinking that I was making fun. 

But when he realized he jumped and took me off the water. That was a very shocking memory that I can’t forget. It could be worse. 

I love to think about my old childhood memories. These memories bring a broad smile to my face. I know it’s the same for everyone. These memories are very much cute and loving. It could be a topic of gossip too. People love sharing things about their childhood, I do.

My mom took some delicious food items there. I can’t remember what exactly the dishes were, but they were amazing in taste. That was an incredible day. We sometimes visited our native village and that was the best moment for me and my cousins. 

We got enough space to run, play football, and do all the stuff that we can’t do in the city. When I think about my childhood, that takes a large part there. Because I have so many amazing memories related to village life. 

My First Day at School: 

The first day at school is a beautiful memory that I can remember clearly. That was a very special event for me. I was very excited. I have been preparing for school and worked very hard for three months. My mother was also working very hard to teach me all the basic things such as alphabets and a few rhymes.

Childhood carries no memories for a child but for an adult it has enormous importance. The time spent in childhood is what shapes the moral and social character of an individual. In this stage of life, the mindset of a person can easily be altered to whatever extent. Remodelling of the mindsets of an individual can easily be done, so a close eye should be maintained on the children, like where they go, what they watch or hear, or who they meet with.

In childhood, a child does not have any worries, hazards of the modern world and when an adult recollects his/her memories of that careless phase of one’s life, they feel very delighted.

Childhood is the time when the social and moral character of a person gets its shape. In this stage of time, the mindset of an individual starts to form. The memories of childhood are a precious asset for most of the people out there. When a person recalls the memories from their childhood, they get to experience the feeling of being delighted.

In the childhood phase of an individual, they are completely free from the worries and hazards of the busy and stressful daily life of an average individual; children may fail to realise this precious moment of theirs as they had not faced the hardships that  comes with being an adult.

4. What should a child do in his/her childhood?

In childhood, a child must live and enjoy his/her life without the worries or stress of the modern world. In this stage of life, the person surrounding the child should try to influence children to start developing productive habits such as time management, reading, and writing. Developing such habits early in the life of an individual will enormously help the individual in the later stages of the life. 

Special care should be given to the diet, health, and immunity of the children and should be taught to be neat and clean, to eat and sleep at the right time. They should play to their heart's content. They should also do exercise regularly.

The most important characteristics of a child in its childhood are the innocence that they harbour and helpful nature. They are helpful towards everyone without any kind of discrimination.

To say that the child is the father to the man is old news — we all realize the influence of our childhoods on the adult we become. Like the foundation of a house, our childhood experiences are the foundation on which the rest of our lives are built. And if the foundation is not solid — has emotional cracks and wounds — these affect the structure of our adult lives.

Each of has a story that we walk out of our childhoods with — about the way our parents always argued, that our brother was abusive, that our sister was supportive, that our grandmother was the rock that kept us stable, that school was hell. We fill in the story with memories — of that awful argument when our father punched a hole in the wall, that time our bullying brother held us down on the playground until the teacher made him get off, the kind attention of our sister when we lost a toy, the way our grandmother listened when we were upset one Christmas, how we felt lonely when we switched schools in the 6th grade. The memories reinforce the story, and the story reinforces our sense of the story of why we are who we are now.

But while each of our stories are unique, there are broader impacts of childhood that affect us all. Here are the most common ones:

Birth order

There are decades of research on birth order and its impact on child/adult development. It has suggested, for example, that by and large, the oldest children (or an only child) are likely to grow up and be good leaders, do well in school and be high achievers, be "good" kids, the ones who follow the rules. They can also often be anxious, can walk on eggshells around others, be sensitive to authority, can be self-critical.

Why? Because they bear the full brunt of the parents' expectations and emotions. They have no siblings to serve as barriers. In this two-against-one scenario, they adapt, are sensitive to what the parents expect, and to emotionally survive in the family, step up and accommodate.

The second child: Often rebellious, pushes the boundaries , questions authority, bucks the system. There’s a theory that our American culture with its independent, land of opportunity, pull-yourself-up-from-your-own-bootstraps climate is the result of all those second-born children who immigrated to the new world because their first-borns siblings would inherit all the property and wealth and so needed to make their own opportunities. Bunching them together in one place, it's no surprise they found kindred spirits and were ready to start a revolution.

But just as the first-born is reacting to the parents and their expectations, the second born is bouncing off the first-born. Their identity comes from being unlike the first — the anti-good child — and from this stance they are able to grab the parents' attention.

The middle child: The middle child often described as struggling to grab the parents' attention at all. They are often labeled the forgotten child, the lost child, the one who gets overlooked in the shuffle between the first and second or the attention heaped on the baby. Where the first-born may leave his childhood sensitive to pleasing others, the second sensitive to power and objecting to rules, the middle child may be sensitive to being overlooked, not being appreciated, not feeling important.

The baby: The stereotype of the youngest children is that they are spoiled — everyone in the family paid attention to them because they were the youngest, so cute, etc. Getting used to having so much attention without much effort can lead to them feeling entitled as an adult and angry when they don’t get what they expect. But it can also lead to anxiety — because others were always stepping in take care of them, they never were able to build up the strong self-confidence that comes from handling things on their own. As an adult, they can get overwhelmed and then instinctively lean on others to bail them out.

Emotional wounds

Emotional wounds are about what you particularly learned to be sensitive to in growing up. It is usually one or two of five things: criticism, micromanaging, feeling neglected, not feeling heard or feeling dismissed, not being appreciated. We all walk out of our childhoods with something.

As a child, your only ways of coping are to get good á la first-born; get angry, á la second-born; or withdraw, á la often the middle-born. And like the birth order, you bounce off your siblings — my brother is the good one, my sister the angry one, I’m the quiet one. The consequences here are that you bring these coping styles into your adult relationships and when you feel wounded, do what you learned. The problem is that this often triggers the other guy’s wound (you withdraw because you feel criticized, the other gets angry because he feels neglected) and the cycle feeds off itself with each person feeling wounded and operating out a childhood brain.

And if these wounds come from trauma — abuse, severe neglect, grief , and loss — this adds another layer: When we are traumatized we instinctively, though often unconsciously, decide how we need to be in order to protect ourselves from such pain in the future. Here we decide not to get close to others, to not trust, to cling so others don't leave, to try and be perfect, to put up a wall of anger .

Family climate

Or you become hyper-alert. This is often the childhood default for growing up in an unsafe environment: your parents arguing all the time or your mother being anxious and yelling; your dad drinking and knowing his moods could change in a nanosecond; there never-ending tension though you could never quite figure out the source. And so your only defense as a child is to always be on guard — to stay on your toes and try and adjust to the emotional weather. Here the oldest child tries to walk on eggshells better, the second child is always ready to pick a fight, the middle retreats to her room, the baby cries and waits for someone to take care of him.

Role models

We usually develop a black and white reaction to our childhood role models. You either identify with the aggressor – I become my mom and can easily yell when I’m stressed or become aggressive like my dad — or I move towards the opposite: I decide sometime in my teen or early adult years not to be like them and instead I never get angry and hold things in, or if my dad drank, I don’t.

The problem here is that your solution is too simple because it is viewed through a child’s eyes. You don’t yell or drink but instead, internalize all your emotions and get self-critical and depressed . Or you don’t drink but instead, act like a dry drunk.

The point here is that all these come together to become the person you are. Your coping styles become your default when you become emotionally triggered, your sensitivities don’t go away and you easily fall back into your childhood feelings and coping styles, your hyper-vigilance doesn't get turned off and you develop a generalized anxiety disorder, the decision you made to protect yourself from further trauma limits your adult life. You try your best to change your past, but find yourself falling back into the same potholes and behaviors as your parents despite your efforts.

Changing the pull of the past

The foundation that was laid down don't have to be permanent and can be repaired. The coping styles you developed for a lot of good reasons don’t have to be your defaults now that you are an adult. The challenge for each of us to have ways of redoing and repairing our childhoods, repairing those cracks in the foundation, noticing the triggers, upgrading the software of our brains. Here’s how to begin to do it:

Understand the impact . If you know why and how you became the person you are, you now have an opening to begin to change it. This is self-awareness, the counter to going on auto-pilot — that I do what I do because I do it. If you know you tend to walk on eggshells, can too easily flare up with anger, can withdraw or are sensitive to feeling overlooked or can become passive and feel entitled, you now have a key to unlock that door that is holding you back.

Change your reactions . Psychodynamic approaches help you do this by helping you unravel your past and gain insight into the sources of those old wounds. With this, you can begin to consciously separate the past from the present and then now make different and choices in the present. But you can also do this without all the drudging into the past. You can do it in the present, in your current relationships.

Here you notice and focus on your reactions or over-reactions. You use your self-awareness of your triggers, your wounds, and now proactively decide to do something different; this is what cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on. Here you slow down and calm your automatic emotional reactions so that your rational adult brain can step in and help you see other options: that you need to speak up rather than accommodating; that you listen to your wants rather than your shoulds; that instead of being angry and rebellious and angry, you use your anger as information to let others know what you need; you move forward rather than retreating and avoiding, you tackle a problem on your own rather than waiting and expecting for others to take care of it for you.

You move against your grain; you do now what you couldn’t do as a child.

Take baby steps . And it's important that you go slow; you don’t have to do the one-week makeover. Take small steps to redo your reactions: Start with those who don’t trigger you as strongly, whose reactions you care less about. The situation is not as important as your response. This is about rewiring your brain, stepping outside your comfort zone, building your self-confidence by finding out through experience that what your childhood brain is telling could happen doesn't.

Decide on who you want to be . Often, we leave our childhoods only aware of negative space, who were don’t want to be: not the yelling mother, the drunk father. Instead go proactive, towards the positive, and as an adult define who you want to become based not on your fears, but your image of what a solid good adult can be. This is about defining your values, rather than just following the shoulds, about deciding what role models you want to follow or what role model you want to be for your own children, rather than just struggling to avoid becoming your own parents. Rather than thinking about how you need to be to avoid repeating history, instead think about the history you want to create, right here, today, right now.

Our childhoods are a part of us. While we can't change the past, we can choose to look at it through a different lens; we can move forward in the present in spite of our childhood wounds, and in the process heal them. Step back, look at what you've walked out with, see what you’ve learned, decide what to keep and what to ignore.

And most of all, move forward.

I have not always been an outspoken individual in my entire life. Growing up, life was not completely favourable as one would deem for a child a fact that would eventually change my attitude and approach towards life. In essence, not everyone in my family went along with my perceptions leaving me to feel like an outsider. More specifically, my parents and siblings did not find my sense and choice of fashion attractive and tenable seeing as I hated shaving my hair and adorned bracelets and loved any clothing that resonated with rock music. In essence, my fashion sense to my family seemed retrogressive and too much for a child growing up in a close-knit family. Nonetheless, while I did not enjoy the intrigues of the experience, I can boldly note that it eventually shaped me. As a child, one expects love from his/her surrounding environment. Childhood, however, comes with many challenges seeing as it involves process and stages of growth. The stages and processes can sometimes nonetheless not augur well with other people such as guardians and close family members. In line with this, I found myself on the receiving end of my family’s disappointment because of embracing a fashion sense they thought to be too profound and abnormal for a child. I viewed this as an invasion into my life always countering it defensively while sometimes acting reclusive. While I thought my embracing of the fashion sense was a step into discovering myself, I also thought it was who I was and expected to be accepted in that manner. My parents, however, made me feel different from my siblings a fact that most of the times hurt my emotions. Despite my family objecting to my sense of fashion at that time out of love, I realized that it is not every time that people close to me can support me when I choose different paths or perceptions different from theirs. More specifically, the situation alerted me that my parents may never be there for in my all my endeavours due to the differences in preferences. This fact, however, made me more reclusive and neglected, and it arose in me the need to be appreciated. In as much as the experience proved tough to me as a child, it gave me insights on a lot of things. Asides from realizing that I could not always depend on close people to support every decision I make, I also learned that the world can never be accommodative to everybody’s needs. In response, I realized that sometimes one has to believe in self even when others don’t. In retrospect, I had been confident in myself, the perceptions of my family on my choice of fashion could not have got to me. Thus, the situation benefited me in the sense that it encouraged me to grow confidence in some matters and issue I take. To overcome the rebellion against my choice, I developed the courage to convince my parents that my choice was not dangerous to my future. As such, the situation shaped me in encouraging me to develop confidence and be able to stand up for my beliefs and choices that I feel are right. It is through my child experience that I have since grown to be who I am, an outspoken and confident student. In conclusion, my childhood experience gifted me with the opportunity of moulding myself into who I presently have become. The fact that the rebellion against my fashion sense by my parents alerted me of how sometimes the world cannot go away suggests how my childhood was crucial in highlighting to me the need to adapt. Further, it is the need to let my family understand me that I gained confidence and eventually changing personality. In essence, the situation shaped me to respond to various conditions in the world. It thus suffices to suggest that childhood experience though with challenges, is responsible for who we eventually become.

Talking about your childhood may be a question that comes up in the IELTS speaking test.

But it could also be a topic of conversation between you and some native English speakers. Or you might be asked to talk about this in an interview for college or a job.

It should be easy to talk about your childhood — it is a topic you know very well.

But for many English learners, it presents a real challenge.

They hear the question: Do you have any interesting stories about your childhood?

And they are at a complete loss at what to say.

Let’s go over what you can say about your childhood in English.

In the following guide, I want to show you many useful phrases and vocabulary that you can use to talk about all the things you did when you were a child.

Useful Phrases to Talk about your Childhood in English

I think it’s a good idea to start by looking at some very common phrases that people use when talking about their childhood.

In My Teens

This phrase means ‘during the time you were a teenager’. A teenager is anyone between the age of 13 and 19. Often a time when we are going through some changes.

In my teens, we lived in a tiny village by the sea In my teens, I rebelled against my parents I was pretty awkward in my teens I didn’t really have many interests in my teens

When I was a Kid

This means any time that you were a child. Could refer to when you were very little — 5 to 7 years old. Or as a teenager. It is all relative to the person speaking.

When I was a kid, we used to go to Epping Forest with my Dad I hated school when I was a kid When I was a kid, we lived in London I would often play in the street with my friends when I was a kid

When I was a Child

This has the same meaning as ‘when I was a kid’ but more formal.

When I was a child, my mother would sometimes get angry with me I loved to read when I was a child

When I was Younger

This could mean any time when you were younger. It is all relative to the person speaking.

When I was younger, I loved to play with my train set I liked to watch cartoons when I was younger When I was younger, we never had computers

When I was Much Younger

This could refer to a time when you were very young. For example, if you are in your mid-twenties and use this phrase, it could mean when you were a very small child or before you were a teenager. But again, it is relative to the speaker.

You might also use this phrase to refer to an earlier time in your childhood.

I was good at reading when I was at school, but my parents had taught me to read when I was much younger When I was a teenager, I was always going out on my bike with my friends, but when I was much younger, I liked to stay with my mum and dad

When I was Just a Kid

Kid means child. We just ‘just a kid’ to talk about things we did as a child, and I didn’t have any experience or knowledge about life. The word ‘just’ makes it seem that we were very young and naïve.

I would spend hours watching cartoons on TV when I was just a kid I believed in all kinds of things when I was just a kid — ghosts and monsters, things like that

When I was Small

We use this phrase in English to refer to a time when we were physically small.

I used to play hide and seek when I was small My mother would walk me to school when I was small

This could refer to any time when you were younger than you are now. It is relative — so it could mean when you were any age. An old man might say when I was young, but regarding a time when he was in his thirties.

I was Born In

This phrase tells the listener where you were born — very simple.

I was born in Japan I was born in London I was born in a small town in Nigeria

But it could also be used to tell the listener which year you were born.

I was born in 2003 I was born in 1996

But I Grew Up In

We say this to talk about where we spent our childhood years growing up. We say but if where we were born and where we grew up were different places.

But I grew up in the countryside But I grew up in France I was born in London, but I grew up in Manchester I was born in China, but grew up in Australia

I was a very ……….. boy/girl

This phrase can be used to describe what kind of child you were. It can talk about your personality or your behaviour when you were very young.

I was a very naughty boy I was a very quiet girl I was a very clever boy I was a very imaginative girl

I never/I always/I sometimes

A useful thing to talk about when talking about your childhood is to say the things you never did or always did. You can also talk about things you sometimes did.

I never talked back to the teachers I never got into trouble with my parents I always played games with my younger brother I always liked to watch action movies on TV I sometimes went to visit my grandmother I sometimes liked to cook something with my mother

This is a very common phrase to use in English when talking about your childhood. You can use this phrase to talk about repeated actions or habits you had as a child.

We form the phrase like this:

Used to + Infinitive

For example:

I used to go shopping with my mother

I used to play games with my friends

When we use this phrase, we are talking about something we did as a child, but no longer do — probably because we are much older and not interested in the same things or a change of lifestyle.

We can use this phrase to talk about repeated actions or habits that we had when we were a child.

It is formed like this:

We use this phrase when we are talking about our childhood and the things that we often did regularly. But we no longer do these things today because we are older and our lives have changed.

Please note that we cannot make sentences about states using I would.

Childhood Memories

It is a great idea to talk about events and stories that you can remember from your childhood. If you are talking about your childhood in the IELTS test, you should definitely tell a story. The examiner loves to hear stories, and this is an excellent opportunity for you to tell one.

You can tell a story about one of the following topics.

  • playing with your friends
  • going outside with your parents
  • going to the beach with your family
  • learning to ride a bike
  • learning to read with your mum or dad

Let’s look at some examples of some stories.

When I was young, I used to go to the beach with my family. Sometimes we would go for a holiday and stay at a campsite near the sea. We would go to the beach every day and play on the sand and go swimming in the sea. It was great fun. There was a big rock on the beach and when we were kids, we imagined it to be a mountain. Our dad would come with us and we would climb up the big rock. From the top, we could see down the whole beach. Then in the evenings we would eat fish and chips and drink cans of fizzy pop. It was very simple when I think about it, but when I was a kid, it just seemed like a magical time.
I got my first bike when I was very young — about five or so. I learned how to ride it using those stabilizer wheels on the back. My dad took them off and I can remember crying at the time. But it helped me to learn how to ride the bike properly. When I was older — maybe around eleven — my dad bought me a bigger bike. This was a sports bike and could go much faster. It had gears and drop-down handlebars. I would go with my friends on bike trips in the countryside. I don’t think we went very far, but it seemed like a very long way at the time. One time we got lost, and we had no idea where we were. We asked some policemen, and they gave us directions and we got home safely.
I’ve always loved reading books, and I put that down to my mum and dad. They encouraged me to read books from a very young age. I learned to read when I was very young. I can remember my mum sitting down with me and helping me to read a book. She must have been very patient because she spent a long time sitting down with me and teaching me how to read. When I was a little older, I had my own bookshelf filled full of books. I loved to lie on my bed and bury my head in a book and read a story. By the time I was in high school, I was reading very advanced novels and other books. I have to thank my mum and dad for helping me do this.

Just as it is a good idea to talk about things you did as a child and tell stories from your childhood, it is also a great idea to talk about your behaviour as a child.

Essentially, there are two types we can talk about:

Good Behaviour

Bad Behaviour

Let’s look at some examples.

  • Helping your parents do chores in the house
  • Helping your parents with the shopping in the supermarket
  • Handing your homework in on time — and all completed!
  • Taking your dog for a walk every day
  • Keeping your room clean and tidy
  • Being polite to others — your neighbours, your teachers, and especially to your parents!
  • Treating elders with respect
  • Not throwing trash in the street or outside

Could be the opposite of any of the above plus…

  • Spending time with the wrong friends
  • Not studying hard enough
  • Getting up late
  • Watching too much TV
  • Spending too much time with screens — smartphone or computer
  • Not saying please or thank you
  • Breaking things
  • Making your clothes dirty

When I was a kid, I was really naughty. I was always getting into trouble. Me and my friends used to play a game called Knock Down Ginger. We would quietly go up to someone’s house and knock loudly on their door. Then we would run away laughing. As we ran, we could hear the person whose door we knocked on shouting after us. One day, as we ran away, I heard one of the people calling out after us. They called out my name! When I got home later that day, my mother was waiting for me. She was furious. She knew exactly what I had been doing and said that she had received a phone call from someone down the road. She marched me to the person’s home and made me apologise. I stopped playing this stupid game after that.
I was a good kid at school. I liked going to school, and I liked the teachers. Some of the other kids liked to play around and be foolish, but I always thought what we were doing in class was more interesting. The teacher would introduce something on the blackboard and then we would have to do something in our groups. I always made sure I was in a group with the good kids so we could finish the exercise properly, but there was a group of bad boys who always played around. The teacher often had to shout at them.
When I was younger, I never cleaned my room. Right up until I was still in high school, my room looked like a terrible mess. My mother would often come up to my room and tell me to clean it up. I had old clothes all over the floor, comics all over the place, and even dirty cups that had not been washed for weeks. One time my mother could not take anymore. She came into my room with a big plastic bag and started dumping everything into it. “If you don’t want to clean it, then it must be rubbish so I’m throwing it all out,” she said. I panicked and immediately cleaned my entire room. But after I left home for college, my room has always been clean and tidy.
As a very young child, I loved to go to the supermarket with my mum. I thought I was helping her, but I don’t know how much help I really provided for her. I loved to push the trolley around the supermarket. My mum would pick out vegetables and other food and place it in the trolley. And then when we got to the checkout, I refused to let my mum take anything out of the trolley. I thought that was my job. I don’t do this today. I sometimes go down to the shop to get something for my mum, but I don’t go to the supermarket with her anymore. My mum often reminds me of the times I helped her when I was a little kid — usually in front of all my friends!

Think of a story from your childhood where you displayed good or bad behaviour.

Write the story down so it is all clear in your mind. Then practise reading it out loud.

Keep trying until you can say the whole story without looking at your notes.

This will help you tremendously in the IELTS speaking test.

These are the Rules!

When we are children, we are introduced to the idea of rules.

There are rules at home, rules at school, rules in other peoples’ homes and rules everywhere.

Below is a list of phrases we can use to introduce what our parents allowed us — or didn’t allow us — to do.

Now let’s use these in some examples.

Use all the phrases above and make your own sentences about the rules you had in your childhood.

First time I ever…

Childhood is a time for firsts.

Here is a list of common first experiences from when we were younger.

  • a birthday party
  • playing with friends
  • a first family pet
  • the first singer or music group that you liked
  • going to the dentist
  • an accident or injury while playing
  • going to the seaside for the first time
  • a special vacation or holiday
  • getting into trouble at school — or with the police!
  • teeth falling out
  • the first time you had a sleepover with friends

  • receiving a gift or present
  • going to see the doctor
  • going out of the house on your own

  • a fight that took place at school!

I had my first birthday party when I was eight years old. All my friends from school came to our house, and we played in the garden and ate some food. We played some games and my mum gave everyone some jelly and ice-cream.   When I was a kid, we had a pet dog called Misty. She was a great dog — very friendly and loved to play with us when we were all young. I don’t know what kind of dog she was as she was a mixed breed, but we thought she was beautiful. She loved to come and play with us in the park. We would go on the slide and Misty would follow us up the steps and come down the slide with us. Sometimes she would get a little dirty and my mum would get angry about that.   I can remember playing outside on my bike when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I slipped and grazed my arm on a wall of a neighbour’s house. Some blood appeared, and I was really upset about it. I remember I started to cry and shout out for my mother. She came outside and saw me on the ground with a grazed arm. She dragged me into the house and put cold water on my arm. It was nothing serious, but I thought it was terrible at the time.   When I was little, a had a tooth that became loose. I was really scared at the time, but my dad just laughed. He said that he would help me pull it out. He grabbed hold of me and went to put his fingers on the loose tooth. Of course, he was only joking, but as I struggled to free myself, the tooth fell out! I put it under my pillow that night and I woke up to find some money in its place. I wonder who did that?

Go through the list of firsts above.

Try to think of a story for each item. Write the story down in your notebook and practise reading it out loud.

This will serve you well in the IELTS speaking test.

We spend a large part of our childhood at school. So it makes sense to talk about it in the IELTS test.

Let’s start by looking at some useful phrases.

And here are some examples of how to use these phrases.

Best Friends Forever!

When we are very young, we make friends with other children around the same age as us.

Our friends could be from school or from our neighbourhood.

Some of these friends stay in our lives for many years. Sometimes all our lives.

But other friends drift in and out of our lives.

We can use these phrases to talk about friends in our childhood.

  • I had a best friend called ………. when I was a kid
  • We liked to
  • We lived on the same street
  • We went to school together

You can use these phrases like this.

I had a best friend at junior school called Kevin when I was a kid. We lived on the same street, and we used to play together on our bikes. Sometimes we would go quite a long way from home and our parents would get angry when we got back tired and late. We used to love watching cartoons together — either at his house or mine. Sometimes we would eat dinner together, always something very simple, but we thought it was great to eat together. We liked to go fishing sometimes and there was a canal near our house where we would go with all our fishing gear. We never caught any fish, but it didn’t stop us trying every time! The summers seemed to go on forever. It didn’t seem like two months off school, it felt more like a year of something. But one thing we both hated was when our mothers told us about school starting next week and we would have to get our school uniform ready for the new semester. It would drive us crazy.

Think of a really good friend you had when you were younger.

  • What kind of things would you do together?
  • Did you go to the same school?
  • Are you still friends today?

Think of some stories about this friend and write them down.

Then practise speaking them out loud.

This is great practise for the IELTS test.

I want to give you a big list of questions you can use to practise talking about your childhood.

You can practise these questions by yourself — but it is much better to practise with a friend or a group.

  • Where were you born? When were you born?
  • Did you have a happy childhood? Give some details.
  • What did you look like?
  • What did you like to do when you were a child?
  • What did you hate to do when you were a child?
  • What kind of personality did you have as a child? Were you shy or outgoing?
  • Did you have a nickname as a child? What was it?

  • When did you learn to ride a bike when you were a child? Who taught you? How did you learn?

  • What kind of things would they allow you to do? Or not allow you to do?

  • How long would you play outside all day?
  • Did your parents allow you to play on the streets?
  • Was it dangerous to play on the streets?
  • What kind of food did you like as a child?
  • Could you eat anything? Or were you fussy about what kind of food you liked?
  • Was there any food you hated as a child? What was it?
  • What kind of toys did you like to play with as a child?
  • Did you have a favourite toy as a child?

Go through all these questions one by one and try to give full answers.

The more details you can provide, the better your answer will be. Try to remember as many events and stories as you can from your childhood and talk about that.

Talking about your childhood is easy. After all, you are talking about someone you know very well — you .

But you need to use the right phrases to express what happened in your childhood. Going over all the exercises above can help you master that.

If you are preparing for the IELTS speaking test, then the subject of talking about your childhood might come up in parts one, two or three. It is a very common topic in the test.

But not only that. You may be asked to talk about your childhood in an interview or as part of an English conversation in your everyday life.

Please take some time to go through all the parts above.

The more you practise, the better you will be able to talk about your childhood.

When are year 6 SATs 2024? Key dates for parents and pupils

When are SATs

Year 6 pupils in England will soon be taking the key stage 2 (KS2) national curriculum tests, which are often referred to as SATs.  

The assessments are used to measure school performance and to make sure individual pupils are being supported in the best way possible as they move into secondary school .   

When are SATs?  

This year, SATs will take place over four days from 13 May to 16 May 2024.

The timetable is as follows:

What are the tests on?   

While pupils won’t be able to see what’s on the test beforehand, t he assessments only include questions on things that children should already have been taught as part of the national curriculum.

As usual, there won’t be a test for English writing or science. Instead, this will be reported as a teacher assessment judgement.  

This is a judgement teachers will make based on your child’s work at the end of KS2.   

Does my child need to revise for SATs?  

Children shouldn’t be made to feel any unnecessary pressure when it comes to the KS2 assessments and t eachers will make sure that all pupils in their class are prepared.  

You should follow their general advice about supporting your child’s education throughout the year and ahead of the tests.  

While it is statutory for schools to hold the assessments, headteachers make the final decision about whether a pupil participates in them.   

Some pupils – for example those with special education needs or disabilities – may be assessed under different arrangements if these are more appropriate.   

If you have concerns about your child participating in the KS2 tests, you should speak to your school in the first instance.  

What if my child finds the SATs tests too difficult?  

It’s important to remember that one of the purposes of the key stage 2 assessments is to identify each pupil's strengths and the areas where they may have fallen behind in their learning as they head into secondary school.   

The results will help their new school determine in which areas your child needs the most support.   

The tests are designed to be challenging to measure attainment, including stretching the most able children. It means some pupils will find them harder than others.    

It takes three years to create appropriate tests. During the process, they’re rigorously trialled with year 6 pupils and reviewed by education and inclusion experts to make sure they’re the right difficulty level.   

The Standards and Testing Agency (STA) is responsible for developing the tests, and Ministers don't have any influence on their content.   

When will we find out the results of SATs?  

Schools will receive test results on Tuesday 9 July 2024.  

Before the end of the summer term, your child’s school will send you a report which will include test results and teacher assessment judgements.  

This should provide you with a good sense of the standard at which your child is working in each subject.  

The school will report your child’s test results as a scaled score for each subject. This is created from the number of marks your child scores in a particular test. A scaled score:  

  • below 100 means that your child may need more support to help them reach the expected standard;  
  • of 100 or more means that your child is working at, or above, the expected standard for the key stage.  

If your child is working below the overall standard of the key stage, or they have special educational needs, reporting will be different, and you should speak to your child’s teacher for more information.
